Here is our solar decision table:

See [1] and [2].Short term payoffNo$300 mortgage + 120 (avg) per month, $2000 bonus, $40,000 refund after fed. tax creditImproves property valueYes5% (on avg.) return on property value, protects roofLow maintenance YesExpandableYesImmunity from blackoutsYes**Mostly. If the power is out for weeks, then we'll likely have some partial blackouts at night.Creates value immediately YesCarbon reduction, power backup, Future oriented solutionYesA passing fadNo
[1] $40,000 solar voltaic system cost divided by the remaining electric bill
If I didn't by a PVE system, the average cost would be $300/month. However, with the PVE system, the new average cost is $150/month. So the system is providing a cost avoidance of $150/month.
Which brings the payoff date to 22 years.
[2] In Texas, my house value will be worth more than 5% due to increased desirability, so this means if I sell my house, the extra value meets or
exceeds the PVE system cost. So if I don't stay for 22 years, I'll make back my investment.

Energy Bill After Remodeling, 2023
Half the windows were replaced with high efficiency windows. A radiant barrier was installed in the attics. A new stage 2 AC system was installed. A pool was installed too though, which adds to our more energy usage, but it’s immensely enjoyable.
Other reports from the power utility company.
With a solar power system, this rating was given to me by my electric utility:
This week’s cost of power. It’s May so I’m having a lot of off-grid days.
Here are the number of power interruptions which didn’t happen due to having battery backup:
Tesla App Screenshots
The following are screenshots of a near real time dashboard about solar power generation, power wall storage, and grid usage which is provided by the Tesla Powerwall 2 controller. At this time of day it’s 7PM so the sun is weak.
The following is what the dashboard looks like when a good amount of solar power is being generated. The house is demanding 1.4kWh and the sun is providing 5.5kWhs. So you see the Powerwalls are getting the surplus power routed to them so that when the sun goes down, I’ll still be “off the grid” and using batteries for the early evening and sometimes for the whole night.

Here is a visual representation of the Kardashev scale and the amount of energy for each step:
Why is there a scale?
It's hard to have an intelligent conversation about something if you don't have a way to think critically about it. Classification schemes is one way of creating a frame of critical thinking. You have to create criteria for the different levels.
How did we get the Kardashev scale?
Russian astrophysicist, Nikolai Kardashev, created the scale in a paper he published in 1964 called, “Transmission of Information by Extraterrestrial Civilizations”. The scale measures a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it is able to use.
What is the scale?
Type 1 through 3. Frequently referred to as K1 through K3.
A Type I civilization, also called a planetary civilization, has the capability to use all of the energy of its planet. A technological achievement that a K1 society would likely have is weather control.
An example of this in movies would be any science fiction movie that shows Earth United by one government, or close cooperation, such as the movie Interstellar and 2010 Space Odyssey.
References:
the movie Interstellar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstellar_(film)
Stanley Kubrick Space Odyssey:
2001 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/
2010 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086837/
A type II civilization,
also called a stellar civilization, can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system. Technological achievements that K2 civilizations would likely have is the ability to terraform and build megastructures. An example of a near type 2 is the TV series The Expanse. Most space operas fall into this category such as any Star Trek. I wanted to place Star Wars here to but since Sith lords frequently entertain ruling the galaxy, they must be nearing K3 contrary to Star Trek, where the galaxy is still a vast place that takes lifetimes to span even with warp drive. Another delightful noir/cyberpunk book series is the Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard K Morgan. The first of which, Altered Carbon, was made into a Netflix movie.

A type III civilization,
also called a galactic civilization, can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy.
Movies like this do casually travel the wide reaches of the galaxy and the galaxy is as well known as any of us today see the Earth as well known and prospected by various nation states. The most famous example of this in movies would be, as I've already said, is Star Wars. More choices are Jupiter Ascending, as well as Valarian and the City of a Thousand Planets. In literature we have books like Vernor Vinges Zones of Thought, and Asimov’s The Foundation. The Vinge book showcases civilizations up and down the kardashev model and so I highly recommend that to those who have a love for alien civ

Arcadie struggles with the rest of his shipmates to become immigrants rather than settlers. He adapts better than his sister who seems always involved with lost causes and he becomes part of space force. But he gets mixed up in a mystery about a woman who is breaking interstellar treaties by tampering with generation ships, and her reasons for doing so sound similar to his sister's affliction—an out-of-control savior complex.

An article on science fiction and radio drama: https://www.otrcat.com/science-fiction-in-radio
Science Fiction has a rich history of radio shows starting in the 1930s. At those times it was Buck Rodgers, Flash Gordon, and War of the Worlds. In the 1940's radio was the worlds leading popular entertainment. But in the 1950s, the popularity of TV in the USA had pretty much wiped out the radio play industry. In other countries such as the UK and New Zealand, radio dramas had continued at some level of popularity, bringing to us well loved shows such as The Hitchhikers Guide.
The form of drama delivered in an audio form took a giant surge in the 2000s with the introduction of the iPod and podcast as a delivery mechanism. Podcasts can also be in audio/video form as well, though most people mean the audio format when they say podcast.
In this show we'll be talking about audio dramas and will use the words podcast and audio drama interchangeably.
Recordings of OTR (old-time radio) survive today in the audio archives of collectors, libraries and museums, as well as several online sites such as Internet Archive.

Sustainable living describes a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the Earth's natural resources, and one's personal resources. It is often called as "earth harmony living" or "net zero living". Its practitioners often attempt to reduce their ecological footprint (including their carbon footprint) by altering their methods of transportation, energy consumption, and/or diet.

But when an unusual string of crimes hits the city, Jacob becomes a prime suspect. To clear his name, he’ll have to team up with the Necropolis PD and solve the mystery. Someone, or some thing is killing the dead.

Now on the run from cultists with powerful allies, Talis needs to unload the ring as quickly as possible. Her desperate search for a buyer and the fallout from her discovery leads to a planetary battle between a secret society, alien forces, and even the gods themselves.

NECROPOLIS PD enter this world in necropolis pd by Nathan Sumsion https://parvuspress.com/npd/
Jacob Green is the only living person trapped in a city where everyone is already dead; a city concealed from the modern world, made up of forgotten buildings, pathways, and spaces. In a world that has long moved beyond the needs of the living, every day is a struggle for survival.
But when an unusual string of crimes hits the city, Jacob becomes a prime suspect. To clear his name, he’ll have to team up with the Necropolis PD and solve the mystery. Someone, or some thing is killing the dead.
And if he can’t figure out who’s responsible, he’ll be the next victim.
This dark, richly imagined novel is Neverwhere-meets-Dresden Files with a pinch of Grim Fandango thrown in for good measure.
The Peridot Shift Trilogy begins with FLOTSAM by R J Theodore: https://parvuspress.com/flotsam/
Captain Talis just wants to keep her airship crew from starving, and maybe scrape up enough cash for some badly needed repairs. When an anonymous client offers a small fortune to root through a pile of atmospheric wreckage, it seems like an easy payday. The job yields an ancient ring, a forbidden secret, and a host of deadly enemies.
Now on the run from cultists with powerful allies, Talis needs to unload the ring as quickly as possible. Her desperate search for a buyer and the fallout from her discovery leads to a planetary battle between a secret society, alien forces, and even the gods themselves.
Talis and her crew have just one desperate chance to make things right before their potential big score destroys them all.

Chip shares the following with his readers and fans:
With work being out of control for the last year or so, I’ve focused on writing very short, very dark stories, (50-100 words) which I’ve had good luck placing in various venues: 101Fiction, 50 Word Stories, and The Drabble. I also have one forthcoming on November 12 from the Arcanist. Lots of tiny, bleak moments. I’m also helping edit a charity anthology with the Weird Dream Society to benefit RAICES that will be out next May with reprints by a host of great authors, including some Odfellows (graduates of the Odyssey Writers Workshop)! The tweeting has begun from @Weirdreamsoc1.

McIntosh's short story "Soft Apocalypse" was shortlisted for both the British Science Fiction Award and the British Fantasy Award. His story "Bridesicle" won both the 2010 Hugo Award for Best Short Story[3] and the 2010 Asimov's Reader Poll, along with being a finalist for that year's Nebula Award. [4]
Hugo award history: thehugoawards.org
This ward is given Best science fiction or fantasy works of previous year.
It was first given out at the 11th World Science Fiction conventions in 1953. The nominees and winners are selected by supporting or attending members of the annual World Science Fiction Convention (also known as World Con). The Hugo award is named after Hugo Gernsback, founder of Amazing Stories magazine.
The Nebula Awards:
Is given to the best works of science fiction or fantasy published in the United States during the previous year. The first Nebulas were given in 1966. The awards are organized and awarded by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America.
So the major differences between the awards is that the Hugo awards are by voted by anyone who attends or supports a World Con and the Nebula Award is awarded by a professional association of science fiction and fantasy writers.
This episode is special. SciFi Thoughts has been going strong now for over a year. Yet before there was a SciFi Thoughts, I'd record an interview and keep it in case I become part of a broadcast vehicle like SciFi Thoughts. So this is one of those, which I hope will be better with age, like a good red wine.
It was April 25th in 2010. I was living in China, Will McIntosh was in Georgia, in the US. Will and I were classmates at Clarion writers' workshop and because of that I saw him announce to the email list that he was nominated for a Hugo. So I schedule an international call with him and recorded our conversation with which became the blog article in 2010; the link is in the show notes. I kept the recording because who knew, maybe someday I'd start a podcast and get to share our chat with the rest of the world. So here it is. A conversation between two friends, one of who was nominated for an award. At the time of the interview, he didn't know he would win the award and so you can imagine his state of mind: excited, yet he really wasn't sure he should take the long international flight from one side of the Earth to the other. This is the first episode from that interview.

==>Lancer— Kind 052 AE Canadian Science Fiction Review AE: The Canadian Science Fiction Review, is back. For six years we curated and published some of the best new Canadian and international science fiction, and turned a critical eye to the genre’s past, present, and future. On Wednesday, July 10, 2019, we return from our unplanned three-year hiatus confident we will do that better than ever before, with five new groundbreaking science fiction short stories.
It’s weird that a science fiction webzine in the country where Neuromancer was conceived and written should be hacked. We found ourselves in the future without even realizing it and discovered we had skimped a bit on the security software. But every great institution must be burned down so it can be built greater anew, even digital ones.
Welcome to AE 2.0. We think you’re gonna like what we have in store.

Why should a small-town boy writing from the Canadian prairies be the one to kick off one of the defining literary movements of the twentieth century and beyond? Maybe blame it on the short winter days and long, cold, amazingly clear starry nights. Maybe the Aurora Borealis. Or maybe it’s the wide-open spaces that make you feel like the vast rising moon is an attacking alien planet.
Certainly there must be some font of inspiration and wide-eyed wonder, as our per-capita artistic productivity has long been a source of pride and identity. Of course we should have our own science fiction magazine. Who better?

Dick sold his first story, “Roog”, in 1951 at the age of twenty three. Roog was about “a dog who imagined that the garbagemen who came every Friday morning were stealing valuable food which the family had carefully stored away in a safe metal container”. After that sucess he wrote full-time. Within the next twelve months he published stories in Planet Stories and in If and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction that year. His debut novel was Solar Lottery, published in 1955 as half of an Ace Double #D-103 alongside The Big Jump by Leigh Brackett. The 1950s were a difficult and impoverished time for Dick, who once lamented, "We couldn't even pay the late fees on a library book." He published almost exclusively within the science fiction genre, but yearned for a career in mainstream fiction.
In 1963, Dick won the Hugo Award for The Man in the High Castle and he was hailed as a genius in the science fiction world. The mainstream literary world was unappreciative, and he could publish books only through low-paying science fiction publishers such as Ace. Although he yearned to break into the mainstream market and have his novels come out in hardback, he never made it. Thusly, we get the PK Dick award which each year honors the best new "straight to paperback" novel.

Dick attended Berkeley High School and graduated with Ursula K. Le Guin in 1947. However the two did not know each other. After graduation, he briefly attended the UC Berkeley. Dick did not declare a major and took classes in history, psychology, philosophy, and zoology. Through his studies in philosophy, he believed that existence is based on internal human perception, which does not necessarily correspond to external reality; he described himself as "an acosmic panentheist," believing in the universe only as an extension of God. After reading the works of Plato and pondering the possibilities of metaphysical realms, Dick came to the conclusion that, the world is not entirely real and there is no way to confirm whether it is truly there. This question from his studies persisted as a theme in many of his novels. Dick dropped out due to anxiety problems and perhaps the mandatory ROTC training.

Philip Kindred Dick and his twin sister, Jane Charlotte Dick, were born six weeks prematurely in 1928. The death of Dick's twin, six weeks after their birth, profoundly affected Philip's life, leading to the recurrent motif of the "phantom twin" in his books.
When Phillip was 8, his parents divorced and his mother took him to Washington D.C. and raised him on her own. Philip attended John Eaton Elementary School completing the second through fourth grades. His lowest grade was a "C" in Written Composition, although a teacher remarked that he "shows interest and ability in story telling".
At the age of ten, Philip and his mother Dorothy returned to California, and it was around this time that he became interested in science fiction. Dick said that his first science fiction magazine was Stirring Science Stories in 1940.

Philip Kindred Dick (December 16, 1928 – March 2, 1982) was an American writer known for his work in science fiction. His work explored philosophical, social, and political themes, with stories dominated by monopolistic corporations, alternative universes, authoritarian governments, and altered states of consciousness. His writing also reflected his interest in metaphysics and theology.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Dick moved to the San Francisco Bay Area with his family at a young age. He began publishing science fiction stories in 1951, at the age of 22. His stories initially found little commercial success,[2] but his 1962 alternative history novel The Man in the High Castle earned Dick early acclaim, including a Hugo Award for Best Novel.[3]
A variety of popular Hollywood films based on Dick's works have been produced, including Blade Runner (1982), Total Recall (adapted twice: in 1990 and in 2012), Minority Report (2002), A Scanner Darkly (2006), and The Adjustment Bureau (2011). Meanwhile, the novel The Man in the High Castle (1962) was made into a multi-season television series by Amazon, starting in 2015.
In 2005, Time magazine named Ubik (1969) one of the hundred greatest English-language novels published since 1923.[6] In 2007, Dick became the first science fiction writer ever to be included in The Library of America series.[7][8][9][10]

About Grim Oak Press
https://grimoakpress.com <- Welcome to Grim Oak Press, a new publishing press with a big dream
In 2011, author and webmaster Shawn Speakman was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and did not have health insurance due to a pre-existing condition. To combat his fast-accruing medical debt, SF&F writers donated short stories that became the bestselling anthology Unfettered. It paid off more than $200,000 in medical bills.
Unfettered launched Grim Oak Press, a brand new SF&F publishing press with the big dream of helping others. It has grown ever since. After five years, Grim Oak Press spawned the non-profit Grim Oak Shield, both businesses working hand-in-hand to defeat medical debt for authors and artists in need. Such notable authors as Terry Brooks, Naomi Novik, Jacqueline Carey, Stephen R. Donaldson, Raymond E. Feist, and Janny Wurts support that mission and in 2018 Grim Oak Press will publish beautiful, limited editions of their books.
Each project we take on has its own life and style. We try to match the best artists in SF&F with the story to make a perfect match. We work directly with the authors and artists, giving them a creative freedom to re-envision their worlds like never before. New wrap around cover art, new interiors, and full color foldouts make these books extremely unique.
We also use the best materials around. Each book is printed on extremely high quality paper, cloth bound and leather wrapped, making them feel just as good in your hands as they look on your shelves. Details in the design and layout, sewn in ribbons, cover stamps, and many other fine touches are how we separate ourselves from other small publishing presses.
It is a magical time for those who love SF&F. Thank you to all who purchase books from Grim Oak Press. We will continue producing them as long as you enjoy placing them on your shelves.

==>Lancer— Kind 026 SciFi Kids react to Season 2 Star Trek Discovery NYC ComicCon trailer Check out SciFi Thoughts episode 7 for the reaction to last year’s Discovery trailer: https://LancerKind.com/series/SciFi-Thoughts Here is the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6eoD9rQHL4 Discovery is the first Star Trek series to air since the Enterprise series and is set a decode before the events of the original Star Trek series. In fact, Christopher Pike is captain of the Discovery during this season. In this series, first officer Michael Burnham is the main character. She is a human who was raised by Vulcans and is the first black leading Star Trek character. Like the original Star Trek TV series from 1966, the makeup of the crew reflects the progressive values of the time. Where the original series showed women working along side men as equals, along with a black woman who was an officer on the bridge, Discovery showcases today's Millennial values with openly geeky girls and men in gay relationships. Also the reoccurring appearances of the character Philippa Georgiou, sometimes a federation captain and sometimes an empress, along with the name dropping of a Chinese starship here and there continues to showcase the rise of Asia in the new global world order, much as having Chekov and Sulu on the bridge in the original series. Let's introduce the SciFi Kids then play the trailer. Discovery is available via streaming from CBS via its All Access service. https://www.cbs.com/all-access/live-tv/ References: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Trek:_Discovery_characters#Philippa_Georgiou

Oddly enough there is a generation gap to those willing to pay for CBS-Access. People born before Y2K seem to be very reluctant. For me it's a no brainer. I really hate commercials. I was the first person I know to pick up a Tivo and I haven't looked back since then. Once you stop watching commercials you lose the tolerance to commercial breaks in your show.
Don't hold out and get on CBS All-Access. With commercials for $5.99. Commercial free for $9.99.

==>Lancer--- Kind 006 The Eras of Science Fiction (Set the stage by: Recap the idea of sf sing a 500 year tradition along with science fiction words used in ancient Hindu texts called the Vedas...)
If you’ll indulge me, I’m going to borrow the idea of eras from science. These eras are independent of genre as genres are closely tied to the human condition at the time rather than the technology to produce story. I expect that the eras will continue to change faster as we speed toward the Singularity. I offer free a poster of how the seminal work of a new scifi-genre maps into an era.

==>Lancer--- Kind 005 Science Fiction becomes a word Although science fiction existed in the 1500s, we don't get the word "science fiction" until the 1900s, when critic, publisher, and writer Hugo Gernsback came up that compound word along with several other alternatives, most of which didn't stick. The early 1900s was an era of standardization as critics like Hugo used their critical voices to influence the market to be critical what was science fiction and what was not, as well as complaining about the quality of the science in science fiction. For example, Hugo refused to publish any science fiction that featured people walking or floating in the vacuum of space without a space suit.
Printing continuous to improve in efficiency. The 1920s and 1930’s comes the era of pulp fiction, pulp meaning that now very low cost paper which could be used for printing and binding books. The era of the Golden Age of Science fiction rides upon the waves of cheap printing. This period starts in the 1930s to the 1950s. At this point everyone knows what science fiction is and most men have read some and we get several more sub-genres genres such as alien invasion, first contact, military SF, and space opera. With the launch of Sputnik, science and space travel became real and for a number of reasons and we enter a new phase, The New Wave. Check out ScifFi Thoughts episode 2 where we discuss New Wave and Cyberpunk. In summary, for New Wave writers, word craft, and near future gritty politics become popular.
Now we could continue discussing more science fiction sub-genres but I think you get the idea. It started with Utopia, and then space travel and horror. Then the 1900s with the advent of pulp printing, books are cheaper and the population of readers is large. So there is a jump in the number of writers and so of course there is a jump in the types of story telling. Did you know is that there are ancient texts describing flying metal ships and robots from ancient civilizations in BCE? While some of these works read like science fiction, they are vast outliers in time perhaps due to the lack of industrialized printing and so few things survived the ravages of times.
There could have been thousands of works lost as it appears that wishful thinking on how human existence would be more comfortable if the right tool existed or if society was better designed, is basic piece of being human. But for now, evidence is clear that when we talk of the science fiction genre, we are dealing with at least a five hundred year literary tradition.
Next episode I'll introduce a timeline for science fiction genres Although science fiction existed in the 1500s, we don't get the word "science fiction" until the 1900s, when critic, publisher, and writer Hugo Gernsback came up that compound word along with several other alternatives, most of which didn't stick. 004 SciFi Genesis
Perhaps you're new to SciFi or perhaps you've been reading SciFi for a few decades. Have you wondered when science fiction came about? For example: Did you know that this story telling genre about the future is quite old?
Take a moment and form a guess in your mind. How old do YOU think science fiction is? You have that number in your mind? Let me give you some clues: it was before there were airplanes, gas burning cars, or even steel railroads. Have you adjusted that number? Did you know that the science fiction genre is 500 years old? That the first science fiction book came off a printing press in the 1500s?
It turns out, the idea of writing a fictional tail using science and speculation of technology, governments, and society is rather old. Having a market of readers as well as having the technology to create books at volume happened in the mid 1400s. In that century, Europe only produced about a few thousand thousand books. It was during the 1500s that our first science fiction book comes on to the scene and by then Europe’s printing capacities reached one or two hundred of million books. There were books with fanciful narratives before the 1500s but these would classified as fantasy as they were filled with magic, myth, and miracles.
Are you familiar with the word utopia? Did you know it's an ancient subgenera of science fiction? Utopian stories are designed to give us a glimpse of how society could be near perfect if it made different decisions or had better technology. In the 1500's Sir Thomas Moore wrote the first science fiction story called Utopia.
So the first work of science fiction was in response to unhappiness of England's King Henry the 8th who wanted to decide what religion everyone followed.
Utopian stories continued being the hot thing for the next two hundred years. It was hard to get published in those days as presses were far and few between. In 1765 we get our first space travel story from a French woman named Marie-Anne de Roumier-Robert.
Fifty years later we get horror SF with Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Europe book production breaks a billion books. In the 1800s, more new ideas are added to science fiction with Steampunk, time travel, alternate history, and alien invasion from Jules Verne, HG Wells, and a host of others.
Next episode, we’ll talk about when the words "science fiction" become a label for this type of story.
It's the early 1800s and before Rudolf Diesel and Henry Ford. Electricity is still a lab experiment. But it doesn't matter. We don't need any of what those guys were selling. The true motors of Innovation are started with firing up a boiler, copper or brass tubing, and driving pistons of power.
Your clockwork butler is powered with a small coal boiler. Your self driving carriage is steam powered. You need to leave London and go visit the colonies? The first class traveler travels on airship powered with steam generators and handled with pneumatic control systems.
Steampunk-- It's a big and visual movement at the conventions: ladies in corsets trimmed with copper tubing, men in shin high-boots and victorian jackets but a steam powered blunderbuss at his side. Steampunk is about fashion, high adventure, and genteel conduct. (Tone change) It probably shouldn't contain the term punk. Unlike it's cousin, Cyberpunk, steampunk isn't focused on high-tech lowlifes but instead the characters are well educated and savvy inventors, scientist, and explorers who employ thoughtful problem solving skills using steam craft tools. (Harpsichord) This is due to it's Victorian ladies and gentleman styling and stories about expanding the frontiers through the unknown. Jules Verne was a early forerunner, a steampunk author before there was steampunk with his (sub ping) "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" published in 1872. During this period of time, Jules was simply doing what any contemporary science fiction author would do, take the technology of his time and apply it to solving the engineering problems that got in the way of touring the seas of Earth in a submersible ship.
Unlike Jules, contemporary authors make effort to use pneumatic call tubes instead of intercoms and frequently create alternate histories with Victorian period characters sporting bitching steam driven gear platted in copper or brass and Victorian gentle-persons faced with high adventure. Other than Jules Vern, seminal work was published in 1958 by Mervyn Peak called Titus Alone.
The most famous steampunk work that broke outside the scifi genre readership would be Wild Wild West (cue electric cowboy). A tv series that ran from 1965 to 1969 and again, a 1999 movie
starring Will Smith and Kevin Kline, who are American West secret agents set in the victorian era, outfitted with a number of clockwork gizmos and battling steam driven monstrosities. Not into movies or books? How about playing a handsome hero in BioShock Infinity, featuring airship technology, floating cities, and skyhook battles. To this date, it's been the rare movie like Wild Wild West or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen that has gone beyond the orbit of their genre. I have yet to discover a Steampunk book that has hit the New York Times best seller list. Only Jules Vern is widely read outside of science fiction reading circles. Despite this, the fan base is well organized in creative vintage clothing with pseudo-boilers and other Victorian era high tech. And who could blame them? (cue) Imagine reading or interacting in a world where a gent is wearing a velour long coat with brass buttons, a heroine in a corset with a blunderbuss in her lap, having a clandestine meeting with a balding scientist. All three hunkered over a table to study an analogue computer of cogs while a Swiss precision automotive tray sidles up to their table with their drinks. Who wouldn't want to dip into this world of romance, adventure, and technology?
There are several steampunk themed conventions in the US and around the world. Subscribe to the mailing list at LancerKind.com and I'll send you a list so you can plan your steampunk world tour.
Next episode we’ll look at the timeline of science fiction as a literary genre and figure out who to blame for starting it.

It was the 1960s. Young science fiction readers and writers were tired of the usual space travel and adventure tales. They yearned to read something that used what was happening around them which was too edgy for the earlier fiction which tended to be cleaned up for young adult readers. The fiction of the New Wave incorporated and even focused on the gritty parts of humanity that most people never saw or only read about in the scandal sheets--drugs, crime, casual sex, corporate malfescience, dishonest governments. If it was bad and dirty, it'd show up in one of these science fiction novels. Many of them incorporated the promises of new computer technologies and how they would be used to improve the human condition, make it faster, smarter, more acute. Then how these cybernetic tools would be used for abuse and for retaliation to abuse. These high tech low lines, these punks were put into enough stories that a new genre emerged, called cyberpunk. These stories more frequently took place on Earth and within our existing cities, painting a gritty future of angry down-and-outers trying to get by in a world that was moving so fast that many were left behind. Where earlier science fiction--golden age--science fiction was about story telling in a clear and simple language, cyberpunk was about style in the word play, much more metaphor and advanced writing styles. Where Golden Age science fiction was easy for 12, 13, and 14 year olds to get into, Cyberpunk was written in more advanced styles: multiple points of views, knowledges of politics, an understand of economy. Cyberpunk is science fiction for the political savvy reader who wanted to see something more complicated than adventure stories that ended with happy days.
Bruce Sterling, Rudy Rucker, Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, J.G. Ballard, Philip Jose Farmer, and Harlan Ellison were the early successful writers in this new wave group. It was later in the 1980's when William Gibson’s debut novel Neuromancer put cyberpunk on the map permanently. Neuromancer was a breakout success, meaning it was widely read by people who didn't normally pickup a science fiction book. It was a New York times best seller, and won the triple crown of science fiction awards: the Hugo, the Nebula, and the P.K. Dick Award. Later, in 1992 Neal Stephenson published his novel Snow Crash, another breakout best seller, which further cemented cyberpunk as a big deal.
Hollywood is about 15 years later to the scene. Phillip K Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" was released in 1982 as "Blade Runner" is a popular early cyberpunk film. Recent films from the last two years are "Blade Runner 2049", "Ghost in the Shell," and the series "Altered Carbon."
Where does the Cyberpunk genre go from here? As a written genre, it is an outdated genre as the cyber in cyber punk is less cutting edge than say biopunk. The millennial fan bas has largely moved on to the more outlandish Steampunk. And how can you blame them? Instead of the noir cool and tough in leather why not step out of the dark alley and into the sun in this Jules Verne period of chaps and ladies decked out in brass, corsets, and steam technology.
Regards,
