Find out with our guest Rachel Yu! Rachel currently teaches students through the Indiana University Young Pianists Pre-College Program. She was previously a faculty on the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program (PPLP) at the University of Michigan, where she ran a full studio and developed her interest in teaching students with special needs.She was born in New York and received a worldwide musical education in Washington D.C., Taipei, and Los Angeles. She started her piano studies at the Levine School of Music in Washington D.C., where she was a recipient of the “From the Top” Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Foundation Scholarship. Having a career as a musician can be challenging unless you are working with a school or company as a U.S. citizen. What about for international students? What issues do they face when they come here and try to pursue the same career path? Find out with our guest pianist, Moises Barradas from Mexico, a graduate of Manhattan School of Music.Moisés Barradas was born on March 22, 1992 in the city of Xalapa Veracruz, he began his piano studies at the age of fifteen. He completed a degree in classical piano at the prestigious Manhattan School Of Music international conservatory in 2016, in which he was awarded the Presidential Award from the Manhattan School Of Music. In February 2018 he made his debut as a soloist with the Amadeo Philharmonic Orchestra in New York City, performing Mozart K.466 piano concerto in D minor, and in May of the same year he graduated from the Master's Degree in Piano at the same Conservatory under the studio of the renowned Professor Phillip Kawin. Moisés has been a soloist, has performed chamber music and has also collaborated in various recitals. He has performed in Mexican venues such as the Faculty of Music of the Veracruzana University, the Superior Institute of Music of the State of Veracruz, the theater of the state of Veracruz, the Xalapa Museum of Anthropology and the tlaqná cultural center, as well as in American venues such as The Julliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Steinway Hall NYC among others. He funded a non profit organization “CIBAR” in order to promote fine arts and make it accessible to everyone. This organization has crated piano festivals, in which he has given talks, private lessons and master classes. Ms. Min has won top prizes at numerous competitions around the world, including 1st prize at The Puigcerda International Piano Competition, 1st prize at BAC Music Competition, 1st prize at NY International Music Competition, 3rd prize at International Competition OPUS Poland, 1st prize at The NY Korea Times Competition, 1st prize at The Music Journal Competition in Korea, 1st prize at Rutgers Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition, 1st prize at Grand Prize Virtuoso International Competition “Bonn” and “Salzburg”, 2nd prize at The Muse International Competition Greece, and 1st prize at Golden Classical Awards International Music Competition. The repertoire of Ms. Min spans a wide range of solo and chamber works, striving to incorporate innovative and unique combination of traditional and contemporary music to make her performances more interesting. At the age of 12, Ms. Choo gave debut public solo recital as part of the Prodigy Concert series in Korea and later made her U.S. debut at the Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center with the Juilliard Orchestra under maestro James Colon.Ms. Choo is currently a DMA candidate at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. She has completed her undergraduate and Master’s studies with Yoheved Kaplinsky and Matti Raekallio at the Juilliard School and Graduate Performance Diploma at the Peabody institute of The Johns Hopkins University. An active chamber musician, Ms. Choo is a member of piano ensemble "at65." Outside of stage, she currently holds a position as a lecturer at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.

And, who is she?Pianist, composer, and educator Alex Sjobeck has won many awards for her performances at festivals as well as a Downbeat award for her work with the Northern Colorado Voices. Active as an educator, performer and touring artist, Sjobeck has released three albums as leader and co-leader; composed music for film; toured with a variety of ensembles including SBST, the Sjobeck/Baker Duo, and the Alex Sjobeck Trio; conducted her own music for big band; and has presented workshops and masterclasses throughout the United States. She is also currently on faculty at Boise State University.She began her professional career while attending the Manhattan School of Music on scholarship and studying under some of the world’s finest jazz pianists. After graduating, she began teaching at the famed jazz program at the University of Northern Colorado as a teaching assistant while attaining her master’s degree.Her unique sound is comprised of a voice all her own which relies on nuanced intricacies paired with familiarity, whether from pop music, world music, modern jazz, or straight-ahead jazz. Margarita performs in several annual concert series such as Bach to the Future Concert Series, Young Masters Concert Series, Manchester Music Festival, as well as the annual Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival held at the Ukrainian Museum in NYC.Born in Ukraine, Margarita Rovenskaya began studying the piano at the age of six in Chicago. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at Oberlin Conservatory in May 2012 and her Masters in Piano Studies at New York University in May 2014, where she also served as Adjunct Piano Faculty. She is currently earning her Doctorate of Musical Arts at Rutgers University. She is based in New York, where she performs and enjoys teaching. She earned her Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy and her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Michigan. She was born in New York and received a worldwide musical education in Washington D.C., Taipei, and Los Angeles. She started her piano studies at the Levine School of Music in Washington D.C., where she was a recipient of the “From the Top” Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Foundation Scholarship. In 2007, she represented Taiwan in the 40th International Piano Competition in Usti nad Labem of the Czech Republic and made her Carnegie Hall debut just three years later. Her primary teachers include Eva Pierrou, Roberto Plano, Dr. Logan Skelton, Ory Shihor, Dr. John Vaughan, Dr. Mikhail Volchok, and Róża Kostrzewska Yoder. She has studied pedagogy under Dr. John Ellis, and Dr. Aya Higuchi Hagelthorn. Aside from performing, Rachel currently teachers students through the Indiana University Young Pianists Pre-College Program. She previously was a faculty on the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program (PPLP) at the University of Michigan, where she ran a full studio and developed her interest in teaching students with special needs. She is an active Music Teacher National Association (MTNA) member and has presented her academic work at the MTNA national conference. From playing guitar as a hobby to making it his career, this episode will surely give you a taste of what the world can provide for you if you're able to seize these opportunities!Originally from Colombia, classical guitarist Carlos Bedoya obtained B.M. degrees in Music Education and Classical Guitar Performance from Rowan University, and a M.M. degree in Classical Guitar performance from the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University where he is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma as a graduate assistant in the prestigious studio of Dr. Andrew Zohn. In the coming fall, Bedoya will pursue a D.M degree in Guitar at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music as an Associate Instructor under the tutelage of pedagogue Petar Jankovic. His previous teachers include Joseph and Kathleen Mayes, Edward R. Nelson and Grammy award winner Jason Vieaux. Some of his career highlights include being finalist in the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey concerto competition, and obtaining top prizes at the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society international competition (2015, 17, 18), the Troy University Guitar Competition (4 th 2020), the Hong Kong IFA online competition (3 rd 2020), and the Sinaloa International Guitar Competition (3 rd 2021). Bedoya was also a semifinalist in several international competitions including the Tampere Guitar Festival in Finland (2020), the Jose Tomas Villa de Petrer Guitar Festival in Spain (2020), the first Ex-Aequo online guitar competition (2020), the Florida Guitar Foundation Competition (2018), and the Florida Guitar Festival (2019). In addition, Carlos has appeared as soloist with the Ocean City Orchestra and the Rowan University Orchestra as a winner of their concerto competition and was selected as a grand winner of the 2014 NLPA music competition which prize allowed him to perform in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. Recently, Bedoya was chosen as the national winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs classical guitar award.
