Your eyes reveal what you cannot see. Advanced OCT and OCT Angiography technology now allows eye care professionals to detect and prevent diseases that would otherwise lead to blindness and to diagnose systemic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease before symptoms appear. In this episode, Dr. Kerry Gelb sits down with Dr. Carolyn Majcher, a leading expert in retinal imaging and vitreoretinal disease, to explore how this breakthrough technology is transforming preventive medicine.❤️ WHY THIS MATTERS:Early detection saves vision. Early detection saves lives. Eye imaging now detects:✓ Diabetes (before the patient knows)✓ Hypertension (silently damaging organs)✓ Cardiovascular disease (showing warning signs in the retina)✓ Retinal diseases (before blindness occurs)✓ Systemic conditions (through the eye as a biomarker)Connect with Dr. Carolyn Majcher: https://www.instagram.com/retina_queen/ 🔔 Subscribe to Open Your Eyes with Dr. Kerry Gelb for weekly episodes on longevity, eye health, and whole body wellness.Connect with Dr. Kerry Gelb:🌐 wellness1280.com 📸 https://www.instagram.com/drkerrygelb/ Thanks to: https://coopervision.com/

Dr. Joseph Pizzorno is a transformational leader in medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine,” which set the foundation for Bastyr to become the first accredited institution in this field anywhere in the world and validated that medicine that promotes health rather than just treats disease could be credibly taught, researched, and practiced. As co-author of the Textbook of Natural Medicine (first edition 1985, fifth edition 2020), he established the scientific foundation for health promotion medicine. With over 100,000 copies sold in four languages, over half to MDs, it not only helped reestablish naturopathic medicine as an important part of the healthcare system but also provided the scientific foundation for the transformational fields of integrative and Functional Medicine throughout the world. The innovative artificial intelligence system he created has been used in corporate wellness by 20,000 employees and demonstrated a 50% reduction in the high-risk group by providing users highly personalized guidance for what they uniquely need to restore their health. He is now leading a multiphase research study to assess the efficacy of detoxification for the reversal of the diabetes epidemic. If successful, it will change the standard of care not just for diabetes, but for the many other chronic diseases where toxins are major contributors.A naturopathic physician (licensed in WA state since 1975), educator, researcher, and expert spokesman, he is editor-in-chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ, founding board member and currently chair of the board of IFM, founding board member of American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, and a member of the science boards of the Hecht Foundation, Gateway for Cancer Research, and Bioclinic Naturals. He was appointed by Presidents Clinton and Bush to two prestigious government commissions to advise the President and Congress on how to integrate natural medicine (by whatever name) into the healthcare system. He is author or co-author of six textbooks for doctors (most recently Clinical Environmental Medicine) and seven consumer books, including the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (with more than two million copies in six languages) and, most recently, The Toxin Solution. As an intellectual, political, and academic leader in medicine for over four decades, he has been widely honored, such as with the Linus Pauling Award by The Institute for Functional Medicine. Most recently, in 2019, he received the Stanley Wallach Award from the American College of Nutrition. In 2018, he received the Leadership Award from the Integrative Healthcare Symposium and the Visionary Award from the Academy of Integrative and Health Medicine.

Dr. Debby Feinberg began performing pioneering work diagnosing and treating Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) and Vertical Heterophoria (VH) in 1995. BVD and VH have been found to cause headaches, dizziness, gait imbalance, anxiety, light sensitivity, neck pain, and reading difficulties in approximately 1-in-5 patients. She and her colleagues at Vision Specialists of Michigan have treated more than 30,000 BVD/VH patients with microprism lenses and noise-canceling devices, of which half have been TBI / ABI patients. Her research (presented nationally and internationally) demonstrates that TBI patients with VH experiencing persistent post-concussive symptoms have an 80% reduction in these symptoms when treated with microprism lenses and noise-canceling devices.Since 2013, over 50 optometrists have successfully completed the NeuroVisual Medicine Training Program and have gone on to help tens of thousands of patients. Drs. Feinberg’s co-founding of the NeuroVisual Medicine Institute is led by her mission to increase access of NeuroVisual care for patients across the globe.

Dr. Abraham Morgentaler is a board-certified urologist, renowned medical researcher, and entrepreneur most recognized for his role is elevating men's health to an emerging clinical specialty of crucial importance. In 1999, Dr. Morgentaler launched Men's Health Boston (MHB), the first comprehensive men's health center in the U.S. MHB's reputation as a center of excellence rose in lockstep with Dr. Morgentaler's clinical research on the relationship between testosterone deficiency, male sexual dysfunction, and prostate health. The findings were irrefutable and transformative. Dr. Morgentaler studies proved that too low, not too high, levels of testosterone could be a precursor for prostate disease. Dr. Morgentaler's clinical and research findings boldly inverted the traditional urological medical community's previous assumptions about testosterone levels. Skeptical and resistant, most continued to eschew testosterone therapy as an option for their patients. Nevertheless, he persevered, standing on the firm ground of solid medical science, positive patient response, and nearly 200 published research studies. Today, Dr. Morgentaler is internationally respected and widely known as the "Father of Testosterone Therapy." Dr. Morgentaler received his Medical Doctorate from Harvard University, completed his residency at the New England Deaconess Hospital and a Surgery Fellowship at Harvard Medical School. He is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Urology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School.

Prof Nolan is the Founder and Director of the Nutrition Research Centre Ireland (NRCI) and is also the Principal Investigator of the Macular Pigment Research Group (MPRG, a specialised research group within this centre). His research group studies the role of nutrition for vision, cognitive function and prevention of age-related disease. In 2011, Prof Nolan won a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) research grant to study the impact of nutritional supplementation on visual function via two major clinical trials (CREST 281096; Central Retinal Enrichment Supplementation Trials). These trials identified how targeted nutrition can improve visual function for the general population, and for patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Current studies at the NRCI are investigating the link between nutrition and brain health and function, and over the last number of years the Nolan and team have published novel papers on how targeted nutrients enhance cognitive function for the general population and improve quality of life for patients suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. Nolan’s work has had a major societal impact for patients suffering with AMD and for enhancing vision of the general population; for recognition, the CREST project was recently selected for presentation at a high-level conference entitled ‘EU Research & Innovation in Daily Life’, which took place at the European Parliament in Brussels to highlight the impact of EU-funded research and innovation in daily life. Prof Nolan has published 106 peer-reviewed scientific papers on his area of research (5150 = citations, H index = 44). In 2014, he successfully edited a CRC Press Taylor & Francis Group book publication entitled “Carotenoids and Retinal Disease.” He has also edited a special issue in the prestigious Journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research (MNF) “Nutrition for the Eye and Brain”. Professor Nolan has editorial roles at the European Journal of Ophthalmology and the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. A major career highlight is his role as Chair of the International Brain and Ocular Nutrition Conference (BON Conference), which is held at Downing College, Cambridge University (www.bonconference.org).
