It got Lucifer kicked out of Heaven and Adam and Eve removed from Eden. It can also ruin your life and church. Though we all appreciate those moments as leaders in the church where someone says “we don’t know what we’d do without you”, we should be careful to start “believing our own press”. In this podcast Larry and Drew discuss their own struggles with pride and how dangerous the issue of Narcissism can be in the heart of leaders and even effect your church.
This conversation is built around the frame work of an article by Charles Stone found on CharlesStone.Com (link below). Stone gives 10 thoughtful considerations of possible signs in leaders who might be Narcissistic.
The 10 Signs of Being a Narcissistic Pastor or Leader:
- Rage if he experiences shame for shame exposes his true self.
- An inordinate need for praise in order to feel important.
- The feeling of entitlement to special treatment.
- The immense need for continual feedback of how important she is.
- The feeling of superiority and its reinforcement from others.
- Strong reaction to rejection and disapproval, sometimes with intense rage.
- The lack of the capacity to mourn, a defense against depression.
- Calculating and conniving behavior to “maintain” supplies of continuous adulation.
- An impaired capacity for commitment.
- No capacity for self-focus or self-examination.

On this podcast, Larry interviews co-host Drew Cline about what he’s calling South City 2.0. South City Church has been working towards a paradigm shift as a church where the focus of ministry was based around the Sunday service, and is now people belonging to smaller “CityGroup” families in the church. They gather twice a month in groups on Sundays for more relational connection (one-anothers) as well as more missional intentionality in their neighborhoods, and the rest of the Sundays is on campus as the entire congregation. Drew shares that the heart of the elders of South City is to see the church own their part of the great commission and do more than attend a service - instead to help equip partners to become disciple-makers. They have been renovating a new building as a ministry hub and full-time coffeeshop/cafe.

Buddy Mullins is best known as an outstanding vocal artist and was inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s Hall of Fame for his time singing with the Grammy and Dove Award winning Gaither Vocal Band. He has travelled and sung his entire life with many gospel music greats such as Bill and Gloria Gaither, Clay Crosse, New Song, DC Talk, Newsboys, Steven Curtis Chapman, and Amy Grant, as well as performing on well known youth author and speaker, Josh McDowell’s “Right from Wrong” tour and the Billy Graham Crusade. He is also a songwriter and musician and has had several number one songs on the charts such as “It’s Still the Cross” and "God is Believable."
His passion now is world missions and he is the CEO for Hope for the World Foundation, which is a 501(c3) missions organization that is sharing God’s love for people by providing for their basic needs in order to share the love of Christ. Most recently, Buddy joined the Booth Brothers and moved to Nashville. He felt that he could expand the reach of HFTW by using his musical abilities to share about the mission. He and his wife, Kerri, also travel on occasion singing and sharing the passion and mission of Hope for the World Foundation.

HCP - Ep. 127 - Are You in Training? (Spiritual Disciplines)
In our culture we are quick to add things to our lives, we incessantly think we need more stuff, so we can do more of the things. But the truth is we should probably consider subtracting some things and replacing those things with godly habits and disciplines that will bring us closer to Jesus. Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 4 to “train yourself and to insist that others be in training as well”. He’s talking about the practice of self-denial and creating SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES. It’s the only way to truly grow in our walk with Christ.

These are people who you continually have issues with, but there’s a difference in those who can be difficult and may offer critique from time to time, and someone who is continually critical. Jesus has given us a wonderful model to follow in Matt. 18 and Paul gives several examples of how to love people who can seem more like enemies than friends (Rom. 12). One question we have to ask with a sincere and reflective heart is “am I the toxic person”? We also must always lead with love and today the guys discuss 1 Thes. 5 and how we need to be “patient with all”.

As the church of Jesus, we’re called to both - rightly dividing the Word of Truth and actively walking it out in our lives. It’s easy in the church to just do what we’ve always done. We get into our traditions and habits and roll for a long time, but just like an old road that you drive on, at some point it will become some deep ruts.

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew sit down with Angelyn McMurray with WE ARE FREE, a ministry focused on caring for trafficking victims both adult and adolescent.
The conversation was one asking the question on behalf of church leaders how they can better bring attention to the real horror that is trafficking plaguing every state and many towns around America.
How do you recognize when someone is being trafficked and what do you do if you find out its happening in your church or community? Pastors and leaders can teach stories from the Bible to make connections to current abuse or this type of activity to help congregants wake up to the need of awareness. Even use of pornography plays a part in the ongoing issue of human trafficking, so helping men and women who may have issues with porn can be combating this problem.

HCP - Ep. 105- Biblical Metrics
On this episode of the HCP Larry and Drew discuss metrics (what we measure). Often church leaders focus on the 3 B’s - Buildings, Bodies, and Bucks as the main metrics for weather or not we are succeeding in our ministry efforts. The question however is, has God called us to success or faithfulness? David was guilty of counting his army instead of trusting God, Gideon was concerned about his lack of army, but God showed Him that the Lord was all he needed. Often as church leaders we’re on one side of this or another. We think we’re doing ok with a certain “number” that seems ok to feel safe. We must be so careful with seeking our safety, security, joy or fulfillment in the wrong things. What if we counted something over the 3 B’s?
What if we begin to serve the Lord and His church in such a way that we were more concerned about our disciples making disciples. Or if our people are loving Jesus, serving their families and neighbors as Christ followers. Are our families being discipled in the home and is mission going forward Mon-Sat? The Bible gives us many different scriptures about what should be important to us and Larry and Drew touch base on those “right” metrics and “new scorecard”.
We have to look deeper in our people to see if they’re “getting it”? Their attendance alone is not enough to determine a life lived for Christ. That’s where we get our hands dirty in the lives of people and shepherd

HCP - Ep. 104 - The Future Church
As church leaders we have to be careful to not to settle for status quo. We have to always be willing to analyze where we are as leaders or where our church is in the area of growth. We can’t only lean on where we’ve been or what we’ve tried in the past but dream and pray and vision for what God wants to do in years to come.
In order to do this Biblically we have to make sure our metric is one of discipleship over numbers. Are we training disciple makers or are we only leading a church service for attendees? Do our people leave those services inspired to be on mission? Are our people actually on mission? What percentage of our church could be considered missionaries in their context? Sadly it’s lower than we want it to be.
We are here “for such a time as this”. May we answer the call of Jesus and be willing to make changes where we need to in order to help our churches to be prepared for this mission in our everyday lives.

As leaders we are called to reflect in good times of celebration and difficult times of challenge. In those moments do you “go to the window” and look for all the people who have made your celebration possible? Do you give others credit, seeing your team as the reason for your success. If you go to the mirror and make it about you you’ve missed the mark. It’s the same for when things aren’t going great. That’s when we should go to the mirror first. We should ask questions like what mistakes have I made, and how can I have done this differently.

It’s EASTER week! Praise God for the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!! But how quickly does our celebration take on pressures we were never intended to carry? As pastors, we stress out this week probably more than any other in the year. Is the lawn perfect, is the choir ready, will I preach the greatest sermon of my life, will we reach all who are in need of the Gospel? Can we just stop you there and say - it’s not on your shoulders!! Only the Father can draw someone to Himself (Jn. 6:44) so how do we prepare for this Sunday with a healthy heart and soul, joy in our faith for the hope we have in the resurrected Jesus and celebrate God’s goodness with our immediate and church families? One this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew talk about this very topic. Sadly we place SO much weight on one service or weekend, when our focus should be on our church family as disciple makers who share the hope of the resurrection every single day of the year!
Hope you can take a deep breath this week, and serve God’s family with joy and peace in who you are in Christ and let go of some of the stress we pile on ourselves that we could never carry if we wanted to.
We pray God blesses our services, but more importantly, that God would equip and send out His people to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus every day of the year!

Be careful not to let that disappointment lead to discouragement and ultimately depression.

Seek to find what needs are not being met and work to be the solution in the name of Jesus. Every church is planted exactly where God wants them to be (Acts 17) for “such a time as this”, so are we making a difference in our community?
We talk about context, dreaming, praying, re-evaluating and reverse engineering what God has laid on your heart for your church. Every church new or old needs a good understanding and stated VISION for who God wants them to become. Biblical and rooted in His Word for expectations of every church, yet contextual and timely for the place where God has planted them.

Many of our churches have “rehearsed” the service elements of the church and most would say they are “on mission”, but the big question is, are disciples being made? Are people being saved, baptized, and taught the things Jesus taught His disciples (Matt. 28:19-20). Are people growing in their Christ-likeness or are they just attending church?
A healthy church will be focused more on being faithful to Jesus’ mission of making disciples than just being faithful to our traditions and religious activity.

HCP - Ep. 82 - Worship Pastor Roles and Relationship with Guest (Travis Sellers)
On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew talk with Worship Pastor Travis Sellers from Antioch Baptist Church in Conway, AR about his ministry, roles and responsibilities but also about the relationship between Senior Pastors and Worship pastors. Often the dynamic between the two can be contentious and stressful, but Travis says our pride is often the reason for strained communication or relationship between roles.
Travis has served in the ministry of worship for 26 years and offers a load wisdom and ideas for other leaders in church ministry no matter your discipline or title.

TRAVIS SELLERS 10 Rules to Lead by as WORSHIP PASTOR:
Don’t go around him
-
The phrase “it’s better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission” should never enter your mind when thinking about your pastor. It’s always, always, always better to ask for his permission. Always.
Don’t go against him
-
Your pastor needs your support, your help, and your encouragement. If you disagree with him, then have a conversation with him and ask him questions. He’d be much happier having a conversation and answering your questions/concerns, then dealing with your flat-out opposition.
Don’t surprise him
Don’t be high-maintenance
-Your pastor has enough high-maintence people in his congregation. Don’t join their ranks. Do your job well, faithfully, humbly, and trustworthily, and your pastor will love you.
Don’t go outside your parameters
- Step 1: Ask and learn what your parameters are. Step 2: Stay inside those parameters. That’s your safety zone, and the protection of your pastor might not extend outside of that zone.
Initiate things inside those parameters
Step 3: Be an initiator. If you know your parameters, and you know where you have your pastor’s support, then just get on with initiating stuff. He’ll be delighted to see you taking charge and will be grateful for your energy.
Help him preach his message (Don’t preach it for him)
Take the time to find out what he’s preaching on, and do your best to support the preaching of the Word by what songs you pick. A worship leader who ignores his pastor will most likely be ignored by their pastor.
Be Excellent
He shouldn’t have to jump hurdles due to your unpreparedness to get to the throne.
Run your ministry in such a way that gets people involved
Your pastor hears from people all the time who aren’t happy because they “can’t get plugged in”. Plug people in. Have them to your house. Have worship team dinners. Build community. It’s good for the church, and it’s good for the pastor to see you getting people involved. He’ll be grateful.
Pray for him-
A worship leader who prays for his/her pastor is a worship leader who wants the best for his/her church. A church is best served by unified leadership. So, pursue unity with your pastor, and pursue it prayerfully, and your worship leadership will be all the more effective.

It’s the new year and we’re ready to get going! But sometimes that’s not the case. Sometimes we believe lies, get depressed, struggle with the task ahead of us. It’s ok - you’re human! We want to remind you that the writer of Lamentations says that God’s mercy is NEW EVERY MORNING. So embrace His goodness, His mercy and the opportunity the day brings and let’s make today count.

It’s that time of year where we reflect on the previous year and consider the one coming up. It’s good in ministry to do the same thing, whether it’s something you do as an individual or as a team on a church staff or leadership team. Many churches today are either declining (85%), reclining, or inclining in our growth. Which are you? HCP - Ep. 79 - You Don’t Have What It Takes - But God Does
On this HCP episode Larry and Drew discuss the mistake many pastors make in working out of our strengths and gifting over resting in and pursuing God’s presence and power in our lives. Often our default is to rely on our abilities and experience but is that what people need to experience - more of you? No, we’re called to first and foremost, rest in the grace and provision of God. “He doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called”. God will of course use your giftings, He’s the One who gave them to you, but not at the expense of your understanding and relying on God’s presence and power.
At some point in ministry you will “run out of gas”, in your proverbial tank of ability. At that moment, the Spirit of God reminds you that this has never been about you and how amazing you are. As David defeats Goliath (because of God’s power), as Mary gives birth and parents the Holy Son of God (by God’s grace). Even Paul mentions in Phil. 3 the need to lessen the importance of accolades and prideful qualifications over knowing Christ.
May the people God has given us to care for see His love and mercy in our lives of dependance upon Him. May they see His strength in our weakness.
Find hope in knowing that even though YOU DON’T have what it takes to do the ministry effectively, He DOES - He’s all you’ve ever needed. May we humble ourselves and be filled with His abiding presence.

HCP - Ep. 78 - Faith Vs. Logic
On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew talk about the struggle of trusting God over what sometimes seems to make more sense to our minds. Surely we’re not alone as believers in that many have gone before us in struggling to trust God over what makes the most sense to us. Characters like Gideon, Abraham, Moses, Peter, Paul and many more have questioned what God wanted to do based on their own calculations and judgements. The Bible tells us however that “HIs ways are not our ways, His thoughts are higher than our thoughts”.
Is there something in your life right now that will require more faith than figuring it out? Seems like following Jesus is often found in this territory and as we come to know Him more, we’re quicker to trust His leading over our understanding, or at least we should be.

HCP - Ep. 75 - “The Nones”
On this podcast of HCP, Larry and Drew discuss this ever increasing group of people who don’t want to be labeled as having any religion. How did we get here? Are we ministering to these people? Did we do something as church leaders to give rise to this group?
In many ways we’ve gotten it backwards in the church. We preach to 100% of people in our services hoping 50% stick around, and pray that 25% will engage in serving, growing and going on mission. But what we see from Jesus’ ministry is the opposite. He has a powerful connection to the Father as “1”, then invests deeply in discipling and training “3” (Peter, James, and John), and gives a broader focus to “12” (the disciples), sends out the “72” and then we see 120 in Acts 1. What can we learn about how we lead our churches now and some ideas to consider for how we lead in the future.
What is the way for the future? Maybe we should see Covid as an opportunity to refocus and redirect some priorities.
We should:
- Start with Mission Not Worship
- Think local, not imported
- Grow people, not just programs

HCP - 73 - Discipleship Paradigms
Jesus said in the great commission to “Go and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matt. 28:18-20
As pastors and church leaders, we know this is a BIG deal. We know this is what we’re to be about in the church, yet we often don’t know how to do it. When we honestly take a critical look at our congregations we may not see this happening as much as we would like. That’s because it’s not an easy thing to do. It takes contextualization and intentionality and simply hard work. There are a million programs, Bible studies and Sunday School curriculums that speak to it, but sadly many of those are not deepening our people in lives of discipleship.
When something’s not working, we need to bravely consider what needs to be changed or challenged until it is working and we’re being obedient to Jesus to do this great commission work.

HCP - 72 - Embracing LImits
This may seem hard to believe, but you CAN’T do it all. You can’t be the best at every role in the church. In fact there maybe some aspects of leadership that you absolutely stink at. That’s why we need each other. That’s why God has given us the body of Christ with different giftings and interest to help shoulder the work of ministry. But what many pastors and ministry leaders do is to try and keep control and they end up burning out, wearing down or worse, giving up. In this HCP episode, Larry and Drew discuss embracing our limits, owning our weaknesses and being honest with ourselves and other leaders who can fill those gaps. We see the wonderful story in scripture of Mary and Martha, one busy and bothered and one at the feet of Jesus, content to just BE with Him. We could learn a lot from these ladies. Numeric growth is seductive and deceptive. Work to grow deeper in Christ, let Mission be the metric, not numbers or money or property.

Challenge status quo - (Do we have to do it this way just because that’s how we’ve always done things?)

Let your WHY be your catalyst. Build around values over tradition - the WHY is the Great Commission

Communicate your vision, values and mission over and over and over until people live it out of it being a reality.

Be tenacious about Spiritual, Organizational, financial and emotional health.

Lead in relationship over responsibilities, but don’t neglect hard conversations or avoid conflict - learn to walk in love and authenticity with your team.

HCP — 68 - Leading Through Insecurities
On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew get honest about the reality of insecurities in all of our lives and how we have to acknowledge them, work through them and find our hope and identity in Christ alone. The role of pastor can be daunting and honestly we can’t do it a part from the grace and sustaining mercy of Jesus. If we can’t see those insecurities or we’re unwilling to deal with them, we will find ourselves and our churches stuck and unfulfilled. Find someone who will be honest with you about possible blind spots, fully hear their feedback and allow the Holy Spirit of God do whatever He needs to do in you to heal, encourage, convict or all the above.

HCP - 67 - Discipleship Dashboard
On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew talk about creating a few constant metrics to live by as a disciple of Jesus. Not unlike how we might take notes on whether we studied God’s Word or prayed, maybe we should hold ourselves accountable for being missional in our lives.
We discussed thinking through an “imaginary” DISCIPLESHIP DASHBOARD - Just like your car shows you different gauges that help you know how well your vehicle is performing, maybe we need a reminder of the things that matter most as we seek to make Jesus known to those around us.
Discipleship Dashboard
- Have we created an AWARENESS (to those we want to reach) that we are present and that we’re kind, loving, serving and represent Jesus?
- How are we doing being intentional to make CONNECTIONS to this person so we can build relational equity and trust?
- Can we work to turn those connections into RELATIONSHIPS where we seeing more than neighborly status but real quality time together, serving them, knowing their lives, families and struggles.
- After we’ve done these three things, it’s SO much easier to have SPIRITUAL CONVERSATIONS with these folks. They trust us, they know we love them regardless of their “acceptance” of our faith and that we want the best for them. Here we can model a life in Christ authentically.

HCP - 66 - Dominating or Motivating?
On this episode Larry and Drew discuss one of the tools in the book “100 X Leader”. The Support/Challenge Matrix helps us as leaders consider how we’re leading through support and challenge.
If you are HIGH CHALLENGE but LOW SUPPORT as a leader - you’ll DOMINATE
If you are LOW CHALLENGE with LOW SUPPORT you will ABDICATE
If you are LOW CHALLENGE with HIGH SUPPORT you’ll only PROTECT.
But if we can offer HIGHT SUPPORT and HIGH CHALLENGE we can LIBERATE!
It’s not unlike how God is a God of Grace and Truth - both are needed, you can’t have health and only have one or the other - it must be both. In order for us to be the godly leaders we should be, we need to support our staff and congregation (giving them whatever is needed for what we’re expecting of them), but also challenge them to all that God has for them.

Pastoring Like A Sherpa
On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew discuss making sure we are personally healthy leaders before trying to encourage others to do the same thing. Larry gives a wonderful example of how the Sherpa of Nepal guide hikers to the highest peak in the world of Mt. Everest. They lead the way by running ahead to prepare the way, then double back and get behind the hikers so they can summit first. That is a beautiful picture of what we need to learn to do to lead and yet support our congregations. The idea is that the Sherpa are more prepared, in better shape, have a better understanding of the mountain in front of them. Pastors should be able to do the same thing yet we can’t lead others up the mountain if we can’t lead ourselves.

One the HCP, today we welcome Pastor Travis Matthews for a conversation about pastoring his childhood church. He’s been at Graves Memorial in North Little Rock, AR as pastor for nearly 20 years and has grown up in ministry with this body from Student Pastor to Senior Pastor.

They also have a GED program they connect the community to. On this episode of HCP Larry and Drew welcome veteran Contemporary Christian Music artist Ginny Owens to discuss her story and leadership lessons learned in the church. Ginny lost her eyesight early in life, but that has not slowed her down one bit. She has written and performed Christian music for the last 20 years on the road and releasing music to CCM radio.
We asked Ginny to tell us what her experience been like in the church as someone with disabilities and what we can learn from her perspective. She also shared with us how to honor and receive persons with disabilities in our churches.
Ginny just released a new book called “Singing in the Darkness” and an EP of songs for each chapter of the book. She shares about our need for creativity in the church and releasing the giftings of creative people in the church to share the love of Jesus with the staff and leadership.
Ginny shared one of her new songs with us on the podcast and it was a first for us, yet a beautiful and humbling moment.

Rethinking Discipleship

Small Town Church Planting (with Guest Chris Driver)
Today on the HCP, Larry and Drew welcome Chris Driver (planting pastor of Oasis Church, Levelland, TX). Context is everything in church planting. We have to be sensitive to the needs and culture of the towns we plant churches in. Those different contexts can be extremely varied. Current church planting models may not connect as well in small towns of 100 or so. In that case, how do we continue to be obedient to Jesus to make disciples where most models don’t quite work the same.
Chris gives some great ideas and vision to how to reach people in smaller towns. These towns may not be able to support the “attractional” church with the pastor who wants a full time church position. Towns like these need to learn how to not only be disciples of Jesus, but make disciples in their context. There’s no room to only sit back and be “consumers”, but instead, be sent on mission to make Jesus known.

Missional Small Groups
On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew talk about mission in the context of small groups. Many times our small groups can become very exclusive and internally focused and we can forget that we’re not only called to care for one another, but to also be intentional in our sharing of the Gospel everywhere we go. In the same way that we pray for one another, want to care for each others needs and disciple one another - we ALSO have to be accountable to each other to make Jesus known. We have an amazing opportunity in our small groups to pray for each other and the movement of God’s Spirit in and through us to take the message of Jesus to those around us.
We were reminded of the story after John and Peter went to the Temple to preach the Gospel and heal the crippled man - they returned to the church of believers who wanted to hear what had happened and their time ended praying for each other to see God’s movement by His Spirit all around them and to be BOLD witnesses for Christ. The Lord affirmed their prayer and desire to make Jesus known but literally shaking the building they were in.
It’s time that the Lord shake our church buildings as well as He sends us out on mission together in boldness and unity and brings us back to authentic community and accountability for what God is doing in us as His people He’s sent out to tell His story.

HCP - 46 - “10 Signs of Being a Narcissistic Pastor”
Though it’s easy to point fingers at others, who you may think have this issue, we should probably look in the mirror first. The original sin is PRIDE. It got Lucifer kicked out of Heaven and Adam and Eve removed from Eden. It can also ruin your life and church. Though we all appreciate those moments as leaders in the church where someone says “we don’t know what we’d do without you”, we should be careful to start “believing our own press”. In this podcast Larry and Drew discuss their own struggles with pride and how dangerous the issue of Narcissism can be in the heart of leaders and even effect your church.
This conversation is built around the frame work of an article by Charles Stone found on CharlesStone.Com (link below). Stone gives 10 thoughtful considerations of possible signs in leaders who might be Narcissistic.
The 10 Signs of Being a Narcissistic Pastor or Leader:
- Rage if he experiences shame for shame exposes his true self.
- An inordinate need for praise in order to feel important.
- The feeling of entitlement to special treatment.
- The immense need for continual feedback of how important she is.
- The feeling of superiority and its reinforcement from others.
- Strong reaction to rejection and disapproval, sometimes with intense rage.
- The lack of the capacity to mourn, a defense against depression.
- Calculating and conniving behavior to “maintain” supplies of continuous adulation.
- An impaired capacity for commitment.
- No capacity for self-focus or self-examination.

On this episode of the Healthy Church Podcast, Larry and Drew candidly talk about ministry and life experiences where they have worked through confrontation. We all face it in most of our relationships and our team or staff relationships are no different. You’ve probably had your heart hurt by a friend or co-worker and held some of those feelings in your heart for a season and it most likely changed that relationship, often not for the better. That leaves us with the reality that we need to work through those feelings or expectations with that person in a way that honors the Lord and loves the person you’re struggling with.
Matt. 18 and Rom. 13 are great passages that deal with loving people well and yet speaking truth in love.
Today we discuss approaching these conversations with:
- Prayer
- The right environment
- Giving the person the benefit of the doubt - don’t create false narratives
- Deal with the issue, not the person
- Affirm your love and commitment to the relationship
- Working through a detailed plan of action to resolve the issue together

On this episode of HCP Drew and Larry talk about the Post Easter realities pastors face. After months of preparation as a staff team, working towards goals on the property, handouts, website tweaks, children’s ministry and everything in between, the big day finally comes. The following day, can be a day that pastors struggle with depression or over critique of their efforts as a team or even just beating themselves up over the message they gave.
On this episode, Drew discusses some of struggles He’s faced after Easter. “Instead of being grateful for all God had done on Easter, I was wishing we had more people, more salvations, better performances, etc… God convicted me and helped me get my heart in the right place, considering the right things.”
Easter is the BIG SUNDAY of the year: (the “Super Bowl of Sundays)
- •We dream of coming across to visitors as the church we want to be
- •We have a list of to-dos to accomplish
- •We want our worship/preaching to be the best of the year
- •We want to greet people joyfully with volunteers and donuts
- •We want our children’s ministry to be the best it can be
- •We want our property to looks its best
- •We want our hand-outs to be top notch
- •We advertise with mailers and FB
- •We want our small groups or community ministry to be offered in the best “light”
- •We want to look our best, want our kids to look their best
- •We have all kinds of dreams and expectations of how we can present our church experience to visitors.
- •We know this may be our only opportunity to connect to the most new people possible – at Easter.
Disappointments can look like:
- •Wish we had more people
- •Wish we had more salvations
- •Wish we had a better offering
- •Wish we had as many people as some other church
- •Wish we had better technical abilities or team for better streaming broadcast
- •Wish we had better worship or leaders or team.
- •Wish I was a better communicator
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Col. 3:12

On today’s Podcast Larry and Drew welcome Missionary and Pastor Charles Costa to the podcast. Charles serves with his family in Beirut, Lebanon. The discussion starts off with Costa talking about not fearing death in the middle East. He said “God has appointed for a man to die once, I’m going to die anyway, I might as well make it count - I want to say to the Lord, I gave my everything for you including my life.”
They discuss the Aug. 4th bombing of the port of Beirut, how the currency has fallen 90% and the impact on the ministry of pastors and the church.
Costa explained, “We see adverse situations as opportunity to show the love of Christ. The bombing in the port of Beirut is the 3rd largest and most destructive non-nuclear bombing in history. But, it has been an opportunity to serve people and make Christ known.”
One final question asked to Costa was “What would say is the most important thing the American church needs to change in order to be a healthy church?” (Answer in the podcast)

Do you know the vision of your church? What is it that your church family is working towards? Believing for? Feeling led to pursue in your community? Vision is more than wanting cool lighting and a great worship team. Vision for the church should seek to be obedient to God and His Word for what the church should be about, but should also be seeking to “exegete” the community. Seek to find what needs are not being met and work to be the solution in the name of Jesus. Every church is planted exactly where God wants them to be (Acts 17) for “such a time as this”, so are we making a difference in our community?
We talk about context, dreaming, praying, re-evaluating and reverse engineering what God has laid on your heart for your church. Every church new or old needs a good understanding and stated VISION for who God wants them to become. Biblical and rooted in His Word for expectations of every church, yet contextual and timely for the place where God has planted them.

Today on the podcast we have a very special guest with us. Katy McCown is a wife and mom and ministry leader of “She Laughs”. Katy is also the wife of former NFL quarterback Luke McCown. Luke spent 13 years in the NFL as a backup quarterback and has played on several teams. As Luke would be traded, their family would have to move from one season to the next, sometimes overnight. After 12 moves in 13 years God is using Katy and Luke in this ministry to woman around the country.
Katy has a podcast and resources on her site for women. She has also created woman’s conferences to strengthen women in their walk with Jesus.
In this interview Katy shares about their life in the NFL and trying to live in community even though they moved so often. She also discusses her desire to see women growing in their relationship with Jesus in ways that are more than just information transfer, but knowing and experiencing a full relationship with Jesus.

On last weeks podcast we discussed the WHY of a healthy church - Core Values. This week we’re talking about the WHAT which is Mission!
Many of our churches have “rehearsed” the service elements of the church and most would say they are “on mission”, but the big question is, are disciples being made? Are people being saved, baptized, and taught the things Jesus taught His disciples (Matt. 28:19-20). Are people growing in their Christ-likeness or are they just attending church?
A healthy church will be focused more on being faithful to Jesus’ mission of making disciples than just being faithful to our traditions and religious activity.

HCP hosts welcome guest pastor Mitch Friedman from Journey Bible Church near Austin, TX. Pastor Mitch was raised in the Jewish faith but found Jesus after a successful Oil and Gas Career had begun. On this podcast, Larry and Drew finishing their previous conversation about Leading in Conflict. Conflict is not something we can avoid in church leadership. Like any relationship, there will be moments of disagreement and hurt feelings. We must step into uncomfortable conversations at times to seek forgiveness or understanding. Jesus has given us the blueprint for dealing with conflict in Matt. 18 and today we discuss walking through this process.

1. Be charitable and kind!!!
2. Remember the goal of confrontation is to help the person not humiliate them.
3. Do not save up criticisms and dump them all at once on the person at one time.
4. Avoid using words like “always” & “never”

- Decide when it would be best to speak to the person!!! - Don’t rush but don’t wait!!
- Decide where it would be best to speak to them! - As neutral as possible!

Have you ever wanted to sit down and ask a few questions to one of the leading pastors in one of the fastest growing churches in the country? That's exactly what we got the chance to do. (Recorded this past March 2020).
Bob Russell was the pastor of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY. He started at 22 years old when the church had 120 members and 20 plus years later he retired when the church was running nearly 20,000 members. He's the author of over a dozen books and a wealth of knowledge for all things pastoral ministry. I (Drew) met him this past Spring when I was invited to be a part of his Pastors Retreat in Louisville. It was a great week of intensive conversation and mentorship by Bob and others and I was so blessed to be a part of it.
The week of that retreat was the week that COVID-19 hit our country and all of our churches. I came home and we decided to cancel in person services that week. We recorded this podcast at that time in the Spring and are just now publishing this interview with Bob.
In the interview Bob gives us some great wisdom around church health, hiring, church growth, the pastors family life, personal relationships and accountability.

In the never ending days of COVID -19 its so easy to grow weary. We continue to try and be an encouraging voice to our churches and assure them that soon we will getting back to normal, or at least we pray that is the case. Deep down however, we sense that we don't have what it takes, that we're not enough, or that we're going to fail in one way or another. GOOD! When we finally realize that we're human and capable of mistakes and struggle, we can then begin to know and experience the full extent of the power of God (2 Cor. 12:9).
Today Larry and Drew discuss how we as pastors should be learning to embrace our weaknesses. They discuss five ways to start that process, ultimately learning to dig deeper into an authentic relationship with Jesus.

Larry and Drew welcome their mentor and friend Jerry Kidd to help tell the story of what God has been up to for the last three and a half years replanting Temple Baptist Church in Little Rock, AR to South City Church.
They discuss conversations and miracles leading up to the decision to replant and change the name of Temple. They also talk about the role prayer, strategy, and the Holy Spirit played in this wonderful story of redemption.
Temple Baptist was once the flagship church in its association, but years of congregational voting led to a fight for control of the church, causing it to begin to die. Pastor Jerry Kidd came on as pastor leading what was left of that congregation to a season of prayer and seeking the next steps for the church. After a year of continual prayer, the Lord led Drew Cline to come and lead the replant process.
South City has now more than tripled in less than 4 years seen more than 100 people come to Christ!

Seek wise counsel – there is safety in a counsel of many (church/Community)

Seek the safety of your people – the most loving thing you can do.

Be willing to be wrong – If you have to punt – change directions, apologize and move forward.

Do ALL you can for due diligence – CLEAN, LEAD, COMMUNICATE, Give GRACE, receive Grace

Give decisions back to your people – ultimately they make their choice on return and risk.

Rest in the decision you’ve made and given to the Lord (Phil. 4:6-7 pray and have peace)
One of the difficult aspects of being isolated in this Covid 19 season is a very real struggle with loneliness, depression and anxiety as pastors. On this episode, Larry and Drew discuss honestly about struggles and strategies to avoid some of these pitfalls.
Whether confession, gratitude, prayer, or some other spiritual practice, we have to be honest about how we're doing and sometimes we need help.
