Restoration - HCP 302

On this podcast Larry asked Drew to share more from a recent message from 1 Peter 5:5-14 and specifically how Peter encourages believers that after they have a season of suffering that the Lord himself will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish them HIMSELF - just as he had done for Peter on the beach in Galilee after his denial of Christ. God can restore anyone willing to humble themselves before Him in surrender.

Worship Moments - 286

On this episode of the HCP, Larry, Heidi and Drew talk about the power of worship in our lives and in the life of our church family. We often make worship about music or a service instead of a surrendering of ourselves before a Holy God. Rom. 12:1-2 tells us that offering our lives as a "living sacrifice is our reasonable act of worship". Worship begins with surrender and seeing God for who He truly is, which allows us to see ourselves for who we are and how desperately we need Him.

This is a REPOST from Episode 43 in Season 1.

HCP - 46 - “10 Signs of Being a Narcissistic Pastor”

Though it’s easy to point fingers at others, who you may think have this issue, we should probably look in the mirror first. The original sin is PRIDE. It got Lucifer kicked out of Heaven and Adam and Eve removed from Eden. It can also ruin your life and church. Though we all appreciate those moments as leaders in the church where someone says “we don’t know what we’d do without you”, we should be careful to start “believing our own press”. In this podcast Larry and Drew discuss their own struggles with pride and how dangerous the issue of Narcissism can be in the heart of leaders and even effect your church.

This conversation is built around the frame work of an article by Charles Stone found on CharlesStone.Com (link below). Stone gives 10 thoughtful considerations of possible signs in leaders who might be Narcissistic.

The 10 Signs of Being a Narcissistic Pastor or Leader:

  1. Rage if he experiences shame for shame exposes his true self.
  2. An inordinate need for praise in order to feel important.
  3. The feeling of entitlement to special treatment.
  4. The immense need for continual feedback of how important she is.
  5. The feeling of superiority and its reinforcement from others.
  6. Strong reaction to rejection and disapproval, sometimes with intense rage.
  7. The lack of the capacity to mourn, a defense against depression.
  8. Calculating and conniving behavior to “maintain” supplies of continuous adulation.
  9. An impaired capacity for commitment.
  10. No capacity for self-focus or self-examination.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”

Phil. 2:3

What Is The Church? - HCP 251

On this episode Larry and Drew talk about the definitions of the church. What is a church? The word church seems to be thrown around to describe a worship service or a beautiful vacation spot, but what does the Bible define as the church? There are normative expectations from NT writers and it’s important to make sure we understand the Biblical definition.

3 Focal Points for the Effective Church (p.3) - HCP 250

On this episode, Larry and Drew discuss THE most important aspect of these 3 points to consider and that’s the SPIRITUAL. Jesus is the Chief Shepherd, it is His church, and we want to do more than go through the motions or understand contextually what the culture is in the area of our church. We want to meet with, experience, learn from our King - and to do those things we must have an awareness and intentionality of the Spiritual aspects of our own lives and the life of our church.

Levels of Leadership p. 1 - HCP 245

On this podcast Larry and Drew discuss the first and second levels of Maxwell’s “Level’s of Leadership”. Just because you have the “position” as pastor, doesn’t mean you have the trust of the people. In the business world, leaders are followed at this level (because they have to be) because of their job. As church leaders, we want to build trust because our people want to give it, not because they are forced to.

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew discuss the importance of, yet the danger with the “place” of worship. Too often we can not only make our buildings the center of our ministry, we can make it a sacred part of ministry which we must be careful with. God uses all types of churches and discipleship methods, but we must always be willing to ask the hard questions of what is MOST important to us - the mission of Jesus, or the model of ministry.

On this podcast Larry and Drew welcome Pastor and Author Mike Fabarez who has written the book “Envy: A Big Problem You Didn’t Know You Had”. This conversation is full of scriptural insight about this issue and conversation around how to avoid it.

HCP - Ep. 214 - Intro to Values

We all value different things as individuals and we have certain values as churches as well. There are things that we prioritize in our ministries and hold dear. The question is are those just bullet points on a brochure about the church, or are they lived out realities by which we are leading and cultivating the mission of Jesus? This is the first of a few podcasts on this topic and this conversation is the introduction to the need for these things and the beginning of this series.

On this podcast Larry and Drew welcome Pastor and Author Daniel Im. Daniel has been on the podcast before talking about his book “No Silver Bullets” and today the discussion is around his new work, “The Discipleship Opportunity”. We should train our interested disciples to become disciple-makers and see those opportunities realized.

HCP - Ep. 211 - South City 2.0

On this podcast, Larry interviews co-host Drew Cline about what he’s calling South City 2.0. South City Church has been working towards a paradigm shift as a church where the focus of ministry was based around the Sunday service, and is now people belonging to smaller “CityGroup” families in the church. They gather twice a month in groups on Sundays for more relational connection (one-anothers) as well as more missional intentionality in their neighborhoods, and the rest of the Sundays is on campus as the entire congregation. Drew shares that the heart of the elders of South City is to see the church own their part of the great commission and do more than attend a service - instead to help equip partners to become disciple-makers. They have been renovating a new building as a ministry hub and full-time coffeeshop/cafe.

HCP 207 - **REPOST of The 4 G's of Gospel Fluency

HCP - Ep. 151 - The 4 G’s of Gospel Fluency

On this episode Larry and Drew begin season 3 with a conversation around a gospel tool meant for personal use as much as to equip and bless others. This tool comes from Jeff Vanderstelt and his book Gospel Fluency.

We each need to be reminded regularly that the Gospel of Jesus should be applied to every area of our lives. There are times where we feel anxious because we’re not in control or when we fear people and live from a place of codependency, when we look for satisfaction in sinfulness or start to believe the wrong things about why God loves us. This tool helps you remember to apply all aspects of the Gospel to your daily life and live from a place of centeredness in the finished work of the cross instead of what you think you bring “to the table”.

HCP - Ep. 188 - Dealing with Ism’s - Radical Individualism

Every church pastor is dealing with “radical individualism” either in his own heart or in his congregation. Part of our sin nature is to make everything about us. Part of being American is to celebrate our “rugged individual spirit”, it’s the American way - but is it Jesus’ way? Without exception Jesus and the Apostles call us to connectedness and life together. On this podcast Larry and Drew discuss what it means to have Interdependence over Independence as follower of Jesus and leaders of His church.

On this pod, Larry and Drew talk about the extremely overlooked and under realized spiritual discipline of SOLITUDE. Many times in the Gospels, we see Jesus slipping away to have time with the Father for solitude, so what excuse do we have? Busyness, control, apathy may be some of the reasons we choose to not make moments of solitude happen in our lives. The guys challenge listeners in this Christmas season to be intentional about some moments of solitude as we reflect on a year ending and a new one beginning.

HCP - Ep. 178 - REPOST - Balancing Family and Ministry

This is a repost from a previous post, but because of the holidays we thought it to be important to be reminded of what should come first in our lives.

REPOST - HCP - Ep. 162 - Balancing Family and Ministry

Too often pastors sacrifice their families on the altar of ministry. There are countless ministry marriages that are on the brink of division or divorce because a pastor has prioritized his ministry over his marriage. On this episode, we discuss that tension and what needs to happen in the church and in our relationships to protect our families and help disciple the church to love families in ministry well. Larry mentions a few important steps to make sure you’re keeping the most important things first in your life and home.

On this episode, Heidi and Drew welcome Dr. Russell Threet to the podcast. Dr. Threet is a Biblical Counselor and Pastor at West Park Baptist in Ozark, AR, and the parent of a special needs child. Often the church doesn’t realize one of the largest groups of people who need Jesus are families with special needs children. It’s hard for them to attend. It’s hard especially for a smaller church to care for special needs children. But on this podcast Dr. Threet helps us understand a willing heart and sensitive culture to people who are different and in need can be as effective as certain programs for these families. HCP - Ep. 175 - Shepherding When People Leave

Some people have called it the Great Exodus of people from the church, but no matter how you see it, a LOT of people are leaving the church. The American church in many ways is in decline. How do we as pastors deal with the pain of our people leaving? How do we keep our hearts tender toward people, and our skin thick from criticism. How do we shepherd our own souls through these moments. How do we love new people knowing the risk of them possibly leaving. The temptation is to withhold love and relationship so we’re not hurt, but we must risk and relate in order to see the mission of Jesus go forward. These ideas come from www.pastormentor.com and Drew and Larry add to those points from their years in ministry in the church as well.

This post is a REPOST of our Ep. 117

HCP - Ep. 117 - 7 Observed Traits of the BEST Leaders

On this episode of the Healthy Church Podcast, Larry and Drew discuss a great post from Ron Edmonson on what Great Leadership qualities look like. Often we give best practices or strategies for leaders, but what we like about this list is these traits have already been proven and these are habits of great men and women.

After we talk trough these, maybe you’ll want to take this list and ask yourself, which of these you may need to work on?

  1. Had a Character worth following.
  2. Believed in me more than I believed in myself.
  3. Available to me when I needed them.
  4. Challenged me to be better than I thought I could be.
  5. Skillful and competent, but not arrogant or self-serving.
  6. Visionary and challenged mediocrity.
  7. Lived for a legacy not immediate recognition.

HCP - Ep. 128 - Discipleship Systems

Last week on the HCP, Larry and Drew discussed starting with yourself when it comes to a healthy life in Christ, specifically around spiritual disciplines. This week they discuss moving from being a disciple or a leader who values discipleship to being a Father and Pastor who values discipleship in your church. Here are some of the points being made on today’s podcast!

Discipleship is about focusing on growing Christians not crowds!

Not called to market the church but minister the gospel.

Not called to keep people but to form people!

Not about going wider with many but deeper with a few!!!

Success is not found in building programs but in building disciples!

HCP - Ep. 127 - Are You in Training? (Spiritual Disciplines)

In our culture we are quick to add things to our lives, we incessantly think we need more stuff, so we can do more of the things. But the truth is we should probably consider subtracting some things and replacing those things with godly habits and disciplines that will bring us closer to Jesus. Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 4 to “train yourself and to insist that others be in training as well”. He’s talking about the practice of self-denial and creating SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES. It’s the only way to truly grow in our walk with Christ.

On this episode Larry and Drew discuss some of these things we should implement into our schedule and be more intentional to live out before our watching church congregations. If we are not using spiritual disciplines in our lives, why would we expect our people to?

The books referenced on the podcast were:

HCP - Ep. 125 - Shepherding Toxic People

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew talk about how to deal with toxic individuals. In ministry at some point, you’re going to run into one of more people who could be labeled “toxic”. These are people who you continually have issues with, but there’s a difference in those who can be difficult and may offer critique from time to time, and someone who is continually critical. Jesus has given us a wonderful model to follow in Matt. 18 and Paul gives several examples of how to love people who can seem more like enemies than friends (Rom. 12). One question we have to ask with a sincere and reflective heart is “am I the toxic person”? We also must always lead with love and today the guys discuss 1 Thes. 5 and how we need to be “patient with all”.

HCP - Ep. 122 - 5 Ways To Lead Well

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew talk about leadership myths and reminders of how to lead in a way that honors the Lord and cares for others. Often taking a position or having a title can cause you to have the misunderstanding that you’re now a leader. You’re not. A title alone or position doesn’t make you a leader. It’s what you do with that position that matters. A better word here than authority is responsibility. What are you doing with that position to help other and the mission go forward. On this podcast the guys use leadership lessons from Ron Edmondson, John Maxwell and Bill Elliff. Lastly they give 5 ways to lead well. May we have the humility to lead with these reminders and qualities to God’s glory.

HCP - Ep. 121 - Living with Accountability

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew talk about the importance of living with accountability. Jesus sent the disciples out in pairs and we see some of his closest disciples fall when they are alone.  Many church leaders know about accountability and could even say it’s important, but are you being intentional in your life and ministry to walk in it? There is a critical balance of GRACE and TRUTH involved in loving relationships around accountability. Grace that we all need when we fail and get honest about those failures and truth that reminds us the need for holiness and obedience.

HCP - Ep. 120 - Mobilizing in Character

As church leaders, we stay busy putting out fires, running from meeting to meeting, prepping for a sermon or a million other things. It can be easy to forget to live with Biblical character - to serve the Lord when no one else is watching. Who are we in the dark, so to speak? When a  car gets on our bumper, when something inappropriate crosses our feed, or when we’re tired, yet the dishes need to be done. On top of the ever important need to authentically exhibit character, are we teaching and discipling our people in the imperative of it as well?  In the church we can easily stay busy “in the machine” of church stuff, and forget to be a people living in holiness and seeking the Lord. This conversation is one about just that - Larry and Drew offer some ideas of how to walk in character and how to lead others toward a life of authenticity as well.

HCP - Ep. 118 - Mobilizing the Church

We often talk about mission in the church, but the question being asked today is if it’s actually happening. There is a difference in Orthodoxy (Correct belief) and Orthopraxy (correct actions). As the church of Jesus, we’re called to both - rightly dividing the Word of Truth and actively walking it out in our lives. Sometimes we can get stuck in the rut of “doing church” and forget the accountability of making sure that we’re “practicing what we preach”. On the episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew discuss different aspects to becoming a missional church that seeks to do both.

Our prayer is that every church places the Great Commission of Jesus in the drivers seat. Here are some thoughts from today’s podcast:

Mobilization runs on two rails;

  1. Building biblical knowledge (what you know)

  2. Building biblical character (who you are).

Ö Biblical knowledge is your biblical literacy and I.Q.

Ö It stresses the importance of handling the Word of God correctly (II Timothy 2:15).

Ö This foundational rail must be laid well and properly.

  1. The other rail running parallel to biblical knowledge is biblical character and behavior.

Ö This is the application of obedience to the knowledge you have learned.

HCP - Ep. 116 - 5 Leadership Growth Killers

On this podcast Larry and Drew discuss 5 things that leaders often do that could be killing their leadership growth and influence and even any leadership culture where they lead.

We do these things sometimes without even thinking about it. For many leading is a natural ability and so to pull back, lighten up or listen to other voices seems counter-intuitive sometimes. It’s not, Jesus said that as His followers we must lead differently than “those who lord over others”. This original content is from Carey Nieuwhof (link below).

Are guilty of these things?

MISTAKE ONE: YOU TRY TO RUN EVERYTHING

MISTAKE TWO: YOU’RE LEADING EVERYTHING

MISTAKE THREE: YOU’RE CONTROLLING EVERYTHING

MISTAKE FOUR: YOU’RE ATTENDING EVERYTHING

MISTAKE FIVE: YOU TRY TO KNOW EVERYTHING

HCP - Ep. 115 - 8 Negative Reactions to Anxiety

We’re human beings. We make mistakes and even as pastors and church leaders, we can find ourselves choosing the wrong reaction to anxiety. On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew want to encourage you to find your identity firmly in Christ and to do the hard work of digging deeper into relationships, not ejecting from them. HCP - Ep. 114 - Relationships in Ministry

Navigating relationships as a church leader can be interesting to say the least. God has called us to serve people and love people and be in relationship with people in order to love and serve them, but sometimes that’s easier said than done. Often pastors face the difficult aspect of wondering how much of myself can I give to this relationship, is this a safe place, will you hurt me, how much can I share? Or conversely we can be guilty of being stand-offish, cold and not very relational because we’ve been wounded and don’t want to be again.

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew discuss the good and bad of relationships in the church and out. God has created us to live in thrive in relationships, but that doesn’t make it easy. We hope this honest conversation of relational dynamics for pastors is helpful and encouraging to you.

HCP - Ep. 113 - Fasting

We know Jesus did it. We see examples all throughout scripture, but is FASTING a discipline that exists in our lives? At the heart of Jesus’ definition of discipleship is denying yourself and that’s what fasting is. You’ve heard of intermittent fasting and possibly know of other health reasons for fasting, but when we fast in a Biblical way, it’s to connect with the Father. We want to hear from Him, see Him move, help us understand what He’s doing or show us HIs will in an area of life.

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew share stories and talk about this important tool for connecting powerfully with the Lord.

The book Larry refers to in this episode is:

HCP - Ep. 112 - Status Quo

It’s easy in the church to just do what we’ve always done. We get into our traditions and habits and roll for a long time, but just like an old road that you drive on, at some point it will become some deep ruts.

In this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew discuss looking at all that we do in the church and objectively asking ourselves this question - Are we settling for Status Quo? Are we just going through the motions? Are we slaves to our tradition or obedient servants to our master? Jesus said to go and make disciples, so we ask - is that taking place? Not just is God’s Word being read, preached and valued, but are we loving, obeying, serving Him more as a result of becoming more like Him through discipleship and sanctification?

Discipleship should be more relational than programatic and in this episode we discuss some ways to rethink some of our traditions. We also discuss spiritual gifts, APEST gifts and Eph. 1 and 4, and how the body of Christ is responsible to build up itself through those giftings, not just a few “professional Christians called staff”.

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew discuss the sensitive topic of being disqualified for ministry. Are there signs to look for before a fall, as well as how to care for brothers and sisters after a fall. We all make mistakes and thankfully those mistakes don’t have to define us or our ministry in the future.

“Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

HCP - Ep. 109 - Intentional Sabbath

As church leaders, we know about Sabbath and even probably understand it’s a commandment. Not a suggestion or best practice, but one of the big ones. WE NEED REST. God created us this way and yet we push back, disobey and often just don’t take time to sabbath.

In this crazy climate of our broken society, now more than ever is the right time to begin to understand sabbath and to implement it in our lives.

On the episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew interview two pastors who attended last years RE:CHARGE, a focused time of sabbath and care for church leaders and their wives. Hear what these pastors say about making time for this retreat and how it has affected their ministries, marriages and churches.

HCP - Ep. 107- Ministry To Trafficking Victims (Angelyn McMurray)

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew sit down with Angelyn McMurray with WE ARE FREE, a ministry focused on caring for trafficking victims both adult and adolescent.

The conversation was one asking the question on behalf of church leaders how they can better bring attention to the real horror that is trafficking plaguing every state and many towns around America.

How do you recognize when someone is being trafficked and what do you do if you find out its happening in your church or community? Pastors and leaders can teach stories from the Bible to make connections to current abuse or this type of activity to help congregants wake up to the need of awareness. Even use of pornography plays a part in the ongoing issue of human trafficking, so helping men and women who may have issues with porn can be combating this problem.

HCP - Ep. 105- Biblical Metrics

On this episode of the HCP Larry and Drew discuss metrics (what we measure). Often church leaders focus on the 3 B’s - Buildings, Bodies, and Bucks as the main metrics for weather or not we are succeeding in our ministry efforts. The question however is, has God called us to success or faithfulness? David was guilty of counting his army instead of trusting God, Gideon was concerned about his lack of army, but God showed Him that the Lord was all he needed. Often as church leaders we’re on one side of this or another. We think we’re doing ok with a certain “number” that seems ok to feel safe. We must be so careful with seeking our safety, security, joy or fulfillment in the wrong things. What if we counted something over the 3 B’s?

What if we begin to serve the Lord and His church in such a way that we were more concerned about our disciples making disciples. Or if our people are loving Jesus, serving their families and neighbors as Christ followers. Are our families being discipled in the home and is mission going forward Mon-Sat? The Bible gives us many different scriptures about what should be important to us and Larry and Drew touch base on those “right” metrics and “new scorecard”.

We have to look deeper in our people to see if they’re “getting it”? Their attendance alone is not enough to determine a life lived for Christ. That’s where we get our hands dirty in the lives of people and shepherd

HCP - Ep. 104 - The Future Church

As church leaders we have to be careful to not to settle for status quo. We have to always be willing to analyze where we are as leaders or where our church is in the area of growth. We can’t only lean on where we’ve been or what we’ve tried in the past but dream and pray and vision for what God wants to do in years to come.

In order to do this Biblically we have to make sure our metric is one of discipleship over numbers. Are we training disciple makers or are we only leading a church service for attendees? Do our people leave those services inspired to be on mission? Are our people actually on mission? What percentage of our church could be considered missionaries in their context? Sadly it’s lower than we want it to be.

We are here “for such a time as this”. May we answer the call of Jesus and be willing to make changes where we need to in order to help our churches to be prepared for this mission in our everyday lives.

On this centennial episode, Larry and Drew share how grateful and thankful they are for the privilege of sharing with you every week.

As leaders we are called to reflect in good times of celebration and difficult times of challenge. In those moments do you “go to the window” and look for all the people who have made your celebration possible? Do you give others credit, seeing your team as the reason for your success. If you go to the mirror and make it about you you’ve missed the mark. It’s the same for when things aren’t going great. That’s when we should go to the mirror first. We should ask questions like what mistakes have I made, and how can I have done this differently.

HCP - Ep. 99 - Church: Destination or Distribution Center

On this episode, Larry and Drew talk about how many churches focus on our services and locations instead of what we’re producing in our people. Even making disciples alone isn’t enough. We need to be making disciple-makers who make disciples. What if our focus, our goal, our efforts all led to our people becoming missionaries leaving and going on mission, not just returning so we can count heads?  There is no such thing as the laity in the Bible - we are all called to take this message of Jesus to the world.

  • Empathy
  • Self Awareness
  • Social Skills
  • Conflict Management
  • Decision Making

HCP - Ep. 95 - Under EASTER Pressure

It’s EASTER week! Praise God for the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!! But how quickly does our celebration take on pressures we were never intended to carry? As pastors, we stress out this week probably more than any other in the year. Is the lawn perfect, is the choir ready, will I preach the greatest sermon of my life, will we reach all who are in need of the Gospel? Can we just stop you there and say - it’s not on your shoulders!! Only the Father can draw someone to Himself (Jn. 6:44) so how do we prepare for this Sunday with a healthy heart and soul, joy in our faith for the hope we have in the resurrected Jesus and celebrate God’s goodness with our immediate and church families? One this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew talk about this very topic. Sadly we place SO much weight on one service or weekend, when our focus should be on our church family as disciple makers who share the hope of the resurrection every single day of the year!

Hope you can take a deep breath this week, and serve God’s family with joy and peace in who you are in Christ and let go of some of the stress we pile on ourselves that we could never carry if we wanted to.

We pray God blesses our services, but more importantly, that God would equip and send out His people to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus every day of the year!

HCP - Ep. 93 - What Is Discipleship? (Part 1)

On this episode of the HCP. Larry and Drew discuss the topic of discipleship and creating a culture of discipleship in our churches.  Jesus was clear in the great commission to “go and make disciples”, yet many churches and pastors don’t know how to define it, much less create a culture of expectation for our people to become  disciple makers.

Why is this not being done in our churches? Why is it so hard to help people to be formed into disciple makers?

Larry and Drew talk about some of these issues and some ideas for moving the ball forward. We’ll have to be courageous as we make a disciple-making culture the primary objective of our churches.

HCP - Ep. 92 - The OTHER Pandemics

On this episode of the HCP Larry and Drew discuss what other issues have developed in our lives and in the church as a result of the Covid 19 Pandemic. Ed Stetzer wrote an article in Outreach Magazine called The 6 Other Pandemics - this is where the content of this podcast comes from.

We talk about the Pandemic of:

  • Mental Illness - so many are struggling with depression and other issues here.

  • Distrust - Who do we trust - different governmental officials and scientists can’t agree on the “science”

  • Division - Sadly our country and the church have become a place of great division.
  • Defamation - It has become easy to create false narratives of people instead of reconcile.
  • Disorientation - If anything we’re confused about what we should do or how we should live with so many changing voices and instructions.
  • Disruption - Our lives have SO been disrupted along with what we knew as the church.

The question is how will we respond as leaders and pastors to these very real issues we’ve been left with.

HCP - Ep. 91 0 Caring For Your Soul

If your arm hurts, it's obvious - you go to the doctor. Same for other physical issues, but what if you can't seem to describe what you're struggling with, but it's affecting different areas of your life? There's a good chance you need to consider what's going on in your soul.

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew discuss this idea of being aware of what needs we have from a "soul"perspective and how it affects our lives and ministries.

HCP - Ep. 90 - The “3 D’s” (Disappointment, Discouragement and Depression)

You don’t have to lead in ministry very long in order to struggle with one of these 3 issues. As leaders we want to see God move in our people and grow in their faith. We want them to attend our events and participate in the mission of Jesus, but when they don’t (as much as you wish they would), you can get disappointed. Be careful not to let that disappointment lead to discouragement and ultimately depression.

On this episode, Larry and Drew discuss ways to be honest about what we’re feeling and relationships we need to engage in so that we can keep our feelings and expectations in check.

If you’re feeling depressed and need someone to talk with, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We’d love to help out with a conversation.

HCP - Ep. 89 - REPLAY - Foundations of a Healthy Church (Vision)

This is a REPLAY of Episode 39 from March 2, 2021 -

On this episode of the Healthy Church Podcast, Larry and Drew continue in their series called Foundations of a Health Church. Today they discuss the 3rd element - Vision.

Do you know the vision of your church? What is it that your church family is working towards? Believing for? Feeling led to pursue in your community? Vision is more than wanting cool lighting and a great worship team. Vision for the church should seek to be obedient to God and His Word for what the church should be about, but should also be seeking to “exegete” the community. Seek to find what needs are not being met and work to be the solution in the name of Jesus. Every church is planted exactly where God wants them to be (Acts 17) for “such a time as this”, so are we making a difference in our community?

We talk about context, dreaming, praying, re-evaluating and reverse engineering what God has laid on your heart for your church. Every church new or old needs a good understanding and stated VISION for who God wants them to become. Biblical and rooted in His Word for expectations of every church, yet contextual and timely for the place where God has planted them.

This is a REPLAY of Ep. 37 from Feb. 16th, 2021

What is the Mission of the church? Do you know? Or better yet, are you doing it?

On last weeks podcast we discussed the WHY of a healthy church - Core Values. This week we’re talking about the WHAT which is Mission!

Many of our churches have “rehearsed” the service elements of the church and most would say they are “on mission”, but the big question is, are disciples being made? Are people being saved, baptized, and taught the things Jesus taught His disciples (Matt. 28:19-20). Are people growing in their Christ-likeness or are they just attending church?

A healthy church will be focused more on being faithful to Jesus’ mission of making disciples than just being faithful to our traditions and religious activity.

If we can help you as you seek to be on mission, please let us know!

REPLAY from Ep. 35 - Feb. 2, 2021

Every healthy church has a clear understanding about what they value, their mission, vision and strategy to be effective.  On today's podcast, Larry and Drew discuss the intro for a series of upcoming podcasts breaking each of these things down to help churches successfully plan towards health and actually live each of these imperatives out.

  • Vision - The WHERE - we're going.
  • Strategy - The HOW - map of how to get there.

  • We need congregational buy in on these ideas for growth.

  • We need to align pastoral values with congregational values.

HCP - Ep. 84 - Counseling In the Church with (Guest Adam Thomas)

On this episode of the HCP, Drew welcomes guest Pastor and Counselor Adam Thomas. Adam is the Preaching/Teaching Pastor at Wyatt Road Baptist Church in El Dorado, AR and is also a Biblical counselor. The conversation today is around the role of pastor as a counselor for his people in the church, the role of the body as they care for one another, “Bearing one another’s burdens, etc..”, and if there is ever a time to go outside of the purview of care in the church.

Every person is different with different mental, emotional, and spiritual needs so please know this conversation is one based on experience and interpretation of scripture. If we can help you in this conversation, please contact us at info@healthychurchpodcast.com.

Many pastors in the public spotlight have fallen recently either in suicide or moral failure and Adam and Drew discuss how to avoid those things though awareness and honest relationships.

There is a need for pastors to own the responsibility to care for the souls of their people through counseling and connecting them to people in the body of the church where they can process life struggles and disappointments. Perhaps we need to better our understanding of how to counsel and helping create a culture in our churches where people can be honest about what they’re struggling with and working through.

HCP - Ep. 83 - Greenhouse Leadership Development

On this episode, Larry and Drew discuss the Leadership “pipeline”. Are we as church leaders investing our time and experience into other leaders?  To invest time or resources or anything at all requires sacrifice. Jesus fed the 5,000, but the little boy with the loaves and fish offered his lunch. For at least a moment, he had no lunch for the hope of what Jesus would do.  What are you sacrificing right now with the hope that Jesus would do something in your context?

Values discussed on the show are:

Contemplation - I know what I value by what I Think about.

Conversation - I know what I value by what I Talk about.

Calendar - I know what I value by how I spend my Time.

Checkbook - I know what I value by how I spend my Treasure.

Some of these concepts have been adapted from Dave Reynolds with the Alliance Church.

HCP - Ep. 82 - Worship Pastor Roles and Relationship with Guest (Travis Sellers)

On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew talk with Worship Pastor Travis Sellers from Antioch Baptist Church in Conway, AR about his ministry, roles and responsibilities but also about the relationship between Senior Pastors and Worship pastors. Often the dynamic between the two can be contentious and stressful, but Travis says our pride is often the reason for strained communication or relationship between roles.

Travis has served in the ministry of worship for 26 years and offers a load wisdom and ideas for other leaders in church ministry no matter your discipline or title.

Travis has also offered to HCP some of his rules to live by as a worship pastor

TRAVIS SELLERS 10 Rules to Lead by as WORSHIP PASTOR:

Don’t go around him
-

The phrase “it’s better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission” should never enter your mind when thinking about your pastor. It’s always, always, always better to ask for his permission. Always.

Don’t go against him
-

Your pastor needs your support, your help, and your encouragement. If you disagree with him, then have a conversation with him and ask him questions. He’d be much happier having a conversation and answering your questions/concerns, then dealing with your flat-out opposition.

Don’t surprise him

Don’t be high-maintenance

-Your pastor has enough high-maintence people in his congregation. Don’t join their ranks. Do your job well, faithfully, humbly, and trustworthily, and your pastor will love you.

Don’t go outside your parameters

  • Step 1: Ask and learn what your parameters are. Step 2: Stay inside those parameters. That’s your safety zone, and the protection of your pastor might not extend outside of that zone.

Initiate things inside those parameters

Step 3: Be an initiator. If you know your parameters, and you know where you have your pastor’s support, then just get on with initiating stuff. He’ll be delighted to see you taking charge and will be grateful for your energy.

Help him preach his message (Don’t preach it for him)

Take the time to find out what he’s preaching on, and do your best to support the preaching of the Word by what songs you pick. A worship leader who ignores his pastor will most likely be ignored by their pastor.

Be Excellent

He shouldn’t have to jump hurdles due to your unpreparedness to get to the throne.

Run your ministry in such a way that gets people involved

Your pastor hears from people all the time who aren’t happy because they “can’t get plugged in”. Plug people in. Have them to your house. Have worship team dinners. Build community. It’s good for the church, and it’s good for the pastor to see you getting people involved. He’ll be grateful.

Pray for him-

A worship leader who prays for his/her pastor is a worship leader who wants the best for his/her church. A church is best served by unified leadership. So, pursue unity with your pastor, and pursue it prayerfully, and your worship leadership will be all the more effective.

HCP - Ep. 81 - Making Today Count!

It’s the new year and we’re ready to get going! But sometimes that’s not the case. Sometimes we believe lies, get depressed, struggle with the task ahead of us. It’s ok - you’re human! HCP - Ep. 80 - Year End Life and Ministry Evaluation

It’s that time of year where we reflect on the previous year and consider the one coming up. It’s good in ministry to do the same thing, whether it’s something you do as an individual or as a team on a church staff or leadership team. Many churches today are either declining (85%), reclining, or inclining in our growth. Which are you? On this episode of HCP Larry and Drew discuss these ideas and some questions to ask to take an honest look at where you are personally as well as in ministry.

If you were to see your church or ministry assignment in one of the 7 churches in Rev. 2-3, which one would it be? What kind of report card would you get from the “Chief Shepherd” Jesus?

It’s good to take an honest look at this time of year and begin to seek the Lord for what steps we need to take to follow Him into this next season of life and ministry.

HCP - Ep. 79 - You Don’t Have What It Takes - But God Does

On this HCP episode Larry and Drew discuss the mistake many pastors make in working out of our strengths and gifting over resting in and pursuing God’s presence and power in our lives. Often our default is to rely on our abilities and experience but is that what people need to experience - more of you? No, we’re called to first and foremost, rest in the grace and provision of God. “He doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called”. God will of course use your giftings, He’s the One who gave them to you, but not at the expense of your understanding and relying on God’s presence and power.

At some point in ministry you will “run out of gas”, in your proverbial tank of ability. At that moment, the Spirit of God reminds you that this has never been about you and how amazing you are. As David defeats Goliath (because of God’s power), as Mary gives birth and parents the Holy Son of God (by God’s grace). Even Paul mentions in Phil. 3 the need to lessen the importance of accolades and prideful qualifications over knowing Christ.

May the people God has given us to care for see His love and mercy in our lives of dependance upon Him. May they see His strength in our weakness.

Find hope in knowing that even though YOU DON’T have what it takes to do the ministry effectively, He DOES - He’s all you’ve ever needed. May we humble ourselves and be filled with His abiding presence.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

HCP - Ep. 78 - Faith Vs. Logic

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew talk about the struggle of trusting God over what sometimes seems to make more sense to our minds. Surely we’re not alone as believers in that many have gone before us in struggling to trust God over what makes the most sense to us. Characters like Gideon, Abraham, Moses, Peter, Paul and many more have questioned what God wanted to do based on their own calculations and judgements. The Bible tells us however that “HIs ways are not our ways, His thoughts are higher than our thoughts”.

Is there something in your life right now that will require more faith than figuring it out? Seems like following Jesus is often found in this territory and as we come to know Him more, we’re quicker to trust His leading over our understanding, or at least we should be.

HCP - Ep. 77 - Following the Spirit and Finding God’s Will

On this episode of the HCP - Larry and Drew discuss the confusing and exhilarating reality of the Holy Spirit and how to follow Him is not for the faint of heart.

Following the Spirit of God means:

  • There’s no promise of SAFETY
  • Anything could happen (no guarantees)
  • We follow Him, He doesn’t follow us
  • You might be uncomfortable
  • It might be risky and require faith

Could it be that God has created you to be DANGEROUS to the enemy? When we follow the Spirit of God in His will - that’s exactly what we become!

HCP - Ep. 76 - The Vision Frame

On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew revisit the ever-so-important quality of vision. Whether you’re a church planter not on the field yet, or you’re a seasoned pastor with 30 years of ministry experience, we all need to make sure we’re still following a vision of what God wants for His church. Larry describes an idea called “The Vision Frame” and we hope it gives you a framework for following Jesus and the vision He’s given you for your church, community and team.

HCP - Ep. 75 - “The Nones”

On this podcast of HCP, Larry and Drew discuss this ever increasing group of people who don’t want to be labeled as having any religion. How did we get here? Are we ministering to these people? Did we do something as church leaders to give rise to this group?

In many ways we’ve gotten it backwards in the church. We preach to 100% of people in our services hoping 50% stick around, and pray that 25% will engage in serving, growing and going on mission. But what we see from Jesus’ ministry is the opposite. He has a powerful connection to the Father as “1”, then invests deeply in discipling and training “3” (Peter, James, and John), and gives a broader focus to “12” (the disciples), sends out the “72” and then we see 120 in Acts 1. What can we learn about how we lead our churches now and some ideas to consider for how we lead in the future.

What is the way for the future? Maybe we should see Covid as an opportunity to refocus and redirect some priorities.

We should:

  • Start with Mission Not Worship
  • Think local, not imported
  • Grow people, not just programs

Many thoughts and ideas from this podcast come from author Will Mancini and his book “Future Church”.

HCP - 74 - Bless Every Home (with Guest Margie Thompson of FamilyLIfe)

Drew welcomes Heidi Sorrells to fill in for Larry Barker on this podcast where they talk with Margie Thompson of FamilyLife. Margie’s work with FamilyLife is around supporting churches who want to better their ministry in “neighboring”. Neighboring is a new term used for being missional in your local neighborhood context. One of the tools available in this effort is a website and app called “Bless Every Home”. This app can be downloaded to your smart phone and show you who your neighbors are on your street. It has prayer lists, notes, and other great features that aid in being missional right where you live. On this episode, Margie shares more about Bless Every Home and how churches and church leaders can utilize this tool to help believers be obedient to the Great Commission of Jesus.

HCP - 73 - Discipleship Paradigms

Jesus said in the great commission to “Go and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matt. 28:18-20

As pastors and church leaders, we know this is a BIG deal. We know this is what we’re to be about in the church, yet we often don’t know how to do it. When we honestly take a critical look at our congregations we may not see this happening as much as we would like. That’s because it’s not an easy thing to do. It takes contextualization and intentionality and simply hard work. There are a million programs, Bible studies and Sunday School curriculums that speak to it, but sadly many of those are not deepening our people in lives of discipleship.

When something’s not working, we need to bravely consider what needs to be changed or challenged until it is working and we’re being obedient to Jesus to do this great commission work.

On this episode, Larry and Drew discuss some of the vision and plan South City Church is working towards in discipleship TRIADS and what it takes to establish people in the faith. They also mention the “Multiplication Workshop” quite a bit and it might be helpful for you as well.

HCP - 72 - Embracing LImits

This may seem hard to believe, but you CAN’T do it all. You can’t be the best at every role in the church. In fact there maybe some aspects of leadership that you absolutely stink at. That’s why we need each other. That’s why God has given us the body of Christ with different giftings and interest to help shoulder the work of ministry. But what many pastors and ministry leaders do is to try and keep control and they end up burning out, wearing down or worse, giving up. In this HCP episode, Larry and Drew discuss embracing our limits, owning our weaknesses and being honest with ourselves and other leaders who can fill those gaps. We see the wonderful story in scripture of Mary and Martha, one busy and bothered and one at the feet of Jesus, content to just BE with Him. We could learn a lot from these ladies. It’s ok, to realize you CAN’T do it all. In fact, the sooner you realize it, the better your ministry, marriage and life with Jesus can become.

HCP - Ep. 69 - 5 Years Later - The South City Replant

On this episode Host Larry Barker asks co-host Drew Cline questions about what God has done over the 5 years of his pastorate at Temple Baptist Church and the replant as South City Church. Larry asks questions like:

  1. What are you Celebrating?

  2. What are some of the things you rejoice about the most?

  3. What have been some of the greatest challenges?

  4. What would you do differentlyif you did it again?

  5. What lessons have you learned that are transferable & reproducible?

  6. What are some things that surprised you both good & bad?

  7. Anything else that you would like those who are listening to know or hear before we close?

Drew shares his heart about how good God has been in these 5 years and offers some insight about what has been learned in this time. In the podcast, Larry asked Drew to post the lessons that could be transferable or reproducible from this time - these are Drew’s answers:

  • Make prayer foundational - nothing is more important

  • Be mean about your vision (John David Smith) - don’t quickly change what your vision has been, fight for it.

  • Be strong (stand for what God has laid on your heart and created you for), don’t back down, lead in love but also in truth (prove it Biblically and lead)

  • Don’t be afraid of bullies (with money, power, tradition, change) If God is for us, who can be against us!

  • Model your vision and church on first century norms not 21st century fads. (One will produce lasting disciples, the other - church consumers)

  • Numeric growth is seductive and deceptive. Work to grow deeper in Christ, let Mission be the metric, not numbers or money or property.

  • Challenge status quo - (Do we have to do it this way just because that’s how we’ve always done things?)

  • Let your WHY be your catalyst. Build around values over tradition - the WHY is the Great Commission

  • Communicate your vision, values and mission over and over and over until people live it out of it being a reality.

  • Be tenacious about Spiritual, Organizational, financial and emotional health.

  • Lead in relationship over responsibilities, but don’t neglect hard conversations or avoid conflict - learn to walk in love and authenticity with your team.

May God bless the next 5 years and lead His church at South City!

HCP — 68 - Leading Through Insecurities

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew get honest about the reality of insecurities in all of our lives and how we have to acknowledge them, work through them and find our hope and identity in Christ alone. The role of pastor can be daunting and honestly we can’t do it a part from the grace and sustaining mercy of Jesus.  If we can’t see those insecurities or we’re unwilling to deal with them, we will find ourselves and our churches stuck and unfulfilled. Find someone who will be honest with you about possible blind spots, fully hear their feedback and allow the Holy Spirit of God do whatever He needs to do in you to heal, encourage, convict or all the above.

2 Cor. 12:9-10 (ESV)

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Paul was willing to lead through insecurities and weakness - are we?

HCP - 67 - Discipleship Dashboard

On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew talk about creating a few constant metrics to live by as a disciple of Jesus. Not unlike how we might take notes on whether we studied God’s Word or prayed, maybe we should hold ourselves accountable for being missional in our lives.

We discussed thinking through an “imaginary” DISCIPLESHIP DASHBOARD - Just like your car shows you different gauges that help you know how well your vehicle is performing, maybe we need a reminder of the things that matter most as we seek to make Jesus known to those around us.

Discipleship Dashboard

  • Have we created an AWARENESS (to those we want to reach) that we are present and that we’re kind, loving, serving and represent Jesus?
  • How are we doing being intentional to make CONNECTIONS to this person so we can build relational equity and trust?
  • Can we work to turn those connections into RELATIONSHIPS where we seeing more than neighborly status but real quality time together, serving them, knowing their lives, families and struggles.
  • After we’ve done these three things, it’s SO much easier to have SPIRITUAL CONVERSATIONS with these folks. They trust us, they know we love them regardless of their “acceptance” of our faith and that we want the best for them. Here we can model a life in Christ authentically.

How are you doing when it comes to these “Gauges” on the Discipleship Dashboard?

HCP - 66 - Dominating or Motivating?

On this episode Larry and Drew discuss one of the tools in the book “100 X Leader”. The Support/Challenge Matrix helps us as leaders consider how we’re leading through support and challenge.

If you are HIGH CHALLENGE but LOW SUPPORT as a leader - you’ll DOMINATE

If you are LOW CHALLENGE with LOW SUPPORT you will ABDICATE

If you are LOW CHALLENGE with HIGH SUPPORT you’ll only PROTECT.

But if we can offer HIGHT SUPPORT and HIGH CHALLENGE we can LIBERATE!

It’s not unlike how God is a God of Grace and Truth - both are needed, you can’t have health and only have one or the other - it must be both. In order for us to be the godly leaders we should be, we need to support our staff and congregation (giving them whatever is needed for what we’re expecting of them), but also challenge them to all that God has for them.

Where do you HONESTLY find yourself on the Matrix?

Pastoring Like A Sherpa

On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew discuss making sure we are personally healthy leaders before trying to encourage others to do the same thing. Larry gives a wonderful example of how the Sherpa of Nepal guide hikers to the highest peak in the world of Mt. Everest. They lead the way by running ahead to prepare the way, then double back and get behind the hikers so they can summit first. That is a beautiful picture of what we need to learn to do to lead and yet support our congregations. The idea is that the Sherpa are more prepared, in better shape, have a better understanding of the mountain in front of them. Pastors should be able to do the same thing yet we can’t lead others up the mountain if we can’t lead ourselves.

Larry also talks about the book Leader 100x by Jeremie Kubicek and Steve Cockram

https://www.amazon.com/100X-Leader-Become-Someone-Following/dp/1119519446

One of the tools discussed is the “peace index”

How would you rate yourself from 1-100 in each of these areas:

  • Purpose
  • People
  • Place
  • Physical Health
  • Provision

Divide it by 5 and that’s your score.

HCP - 64 - Resiliency In Ministry

On this episode our dear friend Heidi Sorrells sits in for Larry as we discuss what it takes to endure in ministry. Barna reports that 1 in 9 pastors are at risk of burnout, half faced depression and 1 in 5 are in danger of addiction. These numbers are from 2017 and if we factor in the difficulty of pastoring through COVID, those numbers would likely be higher.

Pastor Hal Seed has a great article that we discuss today.

How to Be More Resilient When Facing a Challenge

Link

  1. Reject the 3 P’s (Personalization, Pervasiveness, and Permanence)
  2. Get social support.
  3. Appraise the threat and get help.
  4. Put your situation in perspective.
  5. Give yourself some grace.
  6. Focus on small wins.
  7. Become more optimistic.
  8. Use a prayer journal.

HCP - Ep. 60 Give Yourself Some Grace

On this episode Larry and Drew discuss the reality of weariness and struggle that may pastors and church leaders are walking through. “It’s ok to not be ok, but it’s not ok to stay that way”, this is such a true statement. You’re a human being and your adrenaline will only be sustained for so long. Let’s acknowledge the difficulty of what COVID has done to our churches and our souls. Let us not grow weary in doing good however. God is with us and wanting to refill and refuel us when we feel drained.

Nuggets from this podcast:

  • “Start taking the advice you’re giving everyone else about rest”
  • “What the enemy uses to break us will be the thing God uses to make us”
  • “Christianity was birthed from trauma (Garden of Gethsemene)
  • “The Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak”

On this episode of the HCP, Larry and Drew are on location in Waxahatchie, TX for the Multiplication Workshop with Dr. David DeVries. Dr. DeVries has written and been teaching this material for over 10 years and most of those attending this conference have been through the material before and even taught it. So for many this was a refresher course.

This conversation is one that questions and challenges our traditional discipleship model of “doing church” instead of teaching our people to be disciple-makers who make disciple-makers.

The interview includes both Dr. DeVries and Dr. Smith who have written and led extensively on the topic of discipleship and how the “big C” church is possibly getting it wrong and how we can adjust to be greater disciple-makers.

This workshop is a game-changer and I hope this conversation on the podcast introduces you to the great work of Dr. David DeVries and his passion to help the church be about the Great Commission of Jesus in a more direct, healthy and obedient way.

  • Slowed-down Spirituality
  • Integrity in Leadership
  • Below-the-Surface Discipleship

  • Healthy Community
  • Passionate Marriages and Singleness

HCP - Healthy Church Culture Pt. 1

On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew talk about a 6 part ebook offered by Pete Scazzerro on his site http://www.emotionallyhealthy.org/churchculture.

We talk through the first three of these and the importance of a serious look at our hearts and ministries to make sure we’re walking in these truths.

Scazzerro  Lists the first 3 elements in his ebook as:

  1. Slowed-Down Spirituality
  2. Integrity in Leadership
  3. Below-the-Surface-Discipleship

What is your church culture like? What are the things people feel and experience when they come to your church? What are you known for? What does your church value and express?  Sometimes we have a culture we don’t want, and we have to begin the process of identifying it and changing it.

Scazzerro’s book “Emotionally Healthy Spirituality” is a phenomenal book for pastors and he has a new book about discipleship called “Emotionally Healthy Discipleship”.  These are inside out principles in a world mostly concerned about the surface.

Rethinking Discipleship

On today’s Healthy Church Podcast, Larry and Drew welcome Church planter and coach (with the Timothy Initiative). Kevin shares his heart about the #1 problem with discipleship in the church today. We focus on information instead of obedience and therefore raise men and women full of knowledge that often fall short in living that knowledge out in our lives.

Kevin also defines the church, the ecclesia and how church planting needs to change from the strategies of buildings and budgets and focus more on discipleship and evangelism. It will be from there that we plant churches, not the other way around.

Kevin’s church pastorate and ministry is located outside of Washington, D.C. and his heart and passion for the church and discipleship is evident in this podcast. You don’t want to miss this one!

Small Town Church Planting (with Guest Chris Driver)

Today on the HCP, Larry and Drew welcome Chris Driver (planting pastor of Oasis Church, Levelland, TX). Context is everything in church planting. We have to be sensitive to the needs and culture of the towns we plant churches in. Those different contexts can be extremely varied. Current church planting models may not connect as well in small towns of 100 or so. In that case, how do we continue to be obedient to Jesus to make disciples where most models don’t quite work the same.

Chris gives some great ideas and vision to how to reach people in smaller towns. These towns may not be able to support the “attractional” church with the pastor who wants a full time church position. Towns like these need to learn how to not only be disciples of Jesus, but make disciples in their context. There’s no room to only sit back and be “consumers”, but instead, be sent on mission to make Jesus known.

Chris shares his phases of ministry in this church plant:

Phase 1: Connection

Phase 2: Small Group(s)

Phase 3: House Church

Phase 4: Public Launch

Phase 5: Multiplication

He also talks about some refreshing core values:

At Oasis, we will strive to emphasize:

Simple over complicated

Participating over spectating

Connecting over gathering

Sending over keeping

Missional Small Groups

On this episode of HCP, Larry and Drew talk about mission in the context of small groups. Many times our small groups can become very exclusive and internally focused and we can forget that we’re not only called to care for one another, but to also be intentional in our sharing of the Gospel everywhere we go. In the same way that we pray for one another, want to care for each others needs and disciple one another - we ALSO have to be accountable to each other to make Jesus known. We have an amazing opportunity in our small groups to pray for each other and the movement of God’s Spirit in and through us to take the message of Jesus to those around us.

We were reminded of the story after John and Peter went to the Temple to preach the Gospel and heal the crippled man - they returned to the church of believers who wanted to hear what had happened and their time ended praying for each other to see God’s movement by His Spirit all around them and to be BOLD witnesses for Christ. The Lord affirmed their prayer and desire to make Jesus known but literally shaking the building they were in.

It’s time that the Lord shake our church buildings as well as He sends us out on mission together in boldness and unity and brings us back to authentic community and accountability for what God is doing in us as His people He’s sent out to tell His story.

Phil. 2:3

On this episode of the Healthy Church Podcast, Larry and Drew candidly talk about ministry and life experiences where they have worked through confrontation. We all face it in most of our relationships and our team or staff relationships are no different.  You’ve probably had your heart hurt by a friend or co-worker and held some of those feelings in your heart for a season and it most likely changed that relationship, often not for the better. That leaves us with the reality that we need to work through those feelings or expectations with that person in a way that honors the Lord and loves the person you’re struggling with.

Matt. 18 and Rom. 13 are great passages that deal with loving people well and yet speaking truth in love.

Today we discuss approaching these conversations with:

  • Prayer
  • The right environment
  • Giving the person the benefit of the doubt - don’t create false narratives
  • Deal with the issue, not the person
  • Affirm your love and commitment to the relationship
  • Working through a detailed plan of action to resolve the issue together

Ephesians 4:15 “But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:”

On this episode of HCP Drew and Larry talk about the Post Easter realities pastors face. After months of preparation as a staff team, working towards goals on the property, handouts, website tweaks, children’s ministry and everything in between, the big day finally comes. The following day, can be a day that pastors struggle with depression or over critique of their efforts as a team or even just beating themselves up over the message they gave.

On this episode, Drew discusses some of struggles He’s faced after Easter. “Instead of being grateful for all God had done on Easter, I was wishing we had more people, more salvations, better performances, etc… God convicted me and helped me get my heart in the right place, considering the right things.”

Easter is the BIG SUNDAY of the year: (the “Super Bowl of Sundays)

  • •We dream of coming across to visitors as the church we want to be
  • •We have a list of to-dos to accomplish
  • •We want our worship/preaching to be the best of the year
  • •We want to greet people joyfully with volunteers and donuts
  • •We want our children’s ministry to be the best it can be
  • •We want our property to looks its best
  • •We want our hand-outs to be top notch
  • •We advertise with mailers and FB
  • •We want our small groups or community ministry to be offered in the best “light”
  • •We want to look our best, want our kids to look their best
  • •We have all kinds of dreams and expectations of how we can present our church experience to visitors.
  • •We know this may be our only opportunity to connect to the most new people possible – at Easter.

Disappointments can look like:

  • •Wish we had more people
  • •Wish we had more salvations
  • •Wish we had a better offering
  • •Wish we had as many people as some other church
  • •Wish we had better technical abilities or team for better streaming broadcast
  • •Wish we had better worship or leaders or team.
  • •Wish I was a better communicator

Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Col. 3:12

On today’s Podcast Larry and Drew welcome Missionary and Pastor Charles Costa to the podcast. Charles serves with his family in Beirut, Lebanon. The discussion starts off with Costa talking about not fearing death in the middle East. He said “God has appointed for a man to die once, I’m going to die anyway,  I might as well make it count - I want to say to the Lord, I gave my everything for you including my life.”

They discuss the Aug. 4th bombing of the port of Beirut, how the currency has fallen 90% and the impact on the ministry of pastors and the church.

Costa explained, “We see adverse situations as opportunity to show the love of Christ. The bombing in the port of Beirut is the 3rd largest and most destructive non-nuclear bombing in history. But, it has been an opportunity to serve people and make Christ known.”

One final question asked to Costa was “What would say is the most important thing the American church needs to change in order to be a healthy church?” (Answer in the podcast)

Today on the podcast we have a very special guest with us. Katy McCown is a wife and mom and ministry leader of “She Laughs”. Katy is also the wife of former NFL quarterback Luke McCown. Luke spent 13 years in the NFL as a backup quarterback and has played on several teams. As Luke would be traded, their family would have to move from one season to the next, sometimes overnight. After 12 moves in 13 years God is using Katy and Luke in this ministry to woman around the country.

Katy has a podcast and resources on her site for women. She has also created woman’s conferences to strengthen women in their walk with Jesus.

In this interview Katy shares about their life in the NFL and trying to live in community even though they moved so often. She also discusses her desire to see women growing in their relationship with Jesus in ways that are more than just information transfer, but knowing and experiencing a full relationship with Jesus.

Every healthy church has a clear understanding about what they value, their mission, vision and strategy to be effective.  On today's podcast, Larry and Drew discuss the intro for a series of upcoming podcasts breaking each of these things down to help churches successfully plan towards health and actually live each of these imperatives out.

  • Values - The WHY - you do what you do.
  • Mission -  The WHAT - we're supposed to be doing.
  • Vision - The WHERE - we're going.
  • Strategy - The HOW - map of how to get there.

  • We need congregational buy in on these ideas for growth.

  • We need to align pastoral values with congregational values.
  • We need to be careful to not COPY another church - be unique, contextualize.

The next 4 podcasts will break these down for deeper discussion over the next several weeks.

On this episode of the HCP Larry leads our conversation about the body of Christ serving one another. In this time, we need to use the gifts God has given each of us to be a blessing wherever we can.

Drew talks about losing his mom recently and how the church stepped up and served his family and what an incredible blessing it was for them and what he's learning as a result.

As a special addition to the podcast, Larry and Drew welcome Larry's wife Shelby, who serves as a nurse. Shelby had recently walked through a profound experience where by placing a man who had died from Covid, into a bodybag caused her to think of his family and eternity - she shares that experience on this podcast and we're better for having her share this emotional experience with us. Many first responders and medical professionals are so weary and tired of seeing so much death. We need to find ways to serve those who so often serve us.

Are there places and people in your community where you can serve as the hands and feet of Jesus to bless those who are running on empty?

HCP welcomes Pastor and Author Daniel Im. Daniel has written several amazing books on church planting (Planting Missional Churches), ministry (No Silver Bullets), and his latest book on soul health (You Are What You Do - and 6 other Lies).

The conversation starts by discussing the succession process Daniel has been walking through for the last couple of years and what that has looked like for his church in transition.

We then discuss the mistake many churches make in identity, as we talk about he addresses it in his book No Silver Bullets. The book also talks about a discipleship pathway and leadership pipeline, so Daniel speaks to that as well.

The program wraps us talking about 2021 and what we might expect compared to 2020. Daniel encourages pastors to focus on the bride you've been given and be faithful there where you're planted.

This is a wonderful discussion on a lot of topics with one of the leaders in church ministry today - Don't Miss it.

In this first HCP episode of 2021, hosts Larry Barker and Drew Cline discuss a few of the many lessons we've learned from 2020. Without a doubt this past year was one of, if not the hardest year any of us has ever faced. As pastors we were forced to take a step back, remember what was most important about our call and mission and then lean forward into the unknown of what 2020 had to offer.

In many ways 2020 was an amazing year as it helped many of us to draw closer to the Lord and as many of our creature comforts were taken away - Jesus became our calm in the storm.
Church services once paused resumed and we continued to preach the good news of Jesus with a uncommon dose of pastoring through unprecedented realities. Yet God has been good and by His grace we continue to lead in the unknown and trust for His continued kindness and provision in our churches for this year to come.

In this episode we discuss 10 of the top things God has taught us through the year.

HCP hosts welcome guest pastor Mitch Friedman from Journey Bible Church near Austin, TX. Pastor Mitch was raised in the Jewish faith but found Jesus after a successful Oil and Gas Career had begun. The Lord changed his heart and with that, his aspirations of worldly success. He's a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary, has worked in several mega-churches and then planted JBC 17 years ago.

In this funny and honest conversation, Mitch warns church planters about rushing the planning and praying phases of church planting, planting with a ministry partner and taking time to pray for the launch.  Larry and Drew also ask questions about the church's discipleship process and leadership pipeline.

Mitch wants to disciple people to leadership which includes being able to communicate a godly worldview and speaking to current issues like Critical Theory and how culture defines "Love".

Mitch is also an advocate for the Colson Center and Fellows which equip pastors and other leaders for effectively communicating a Christian worldview and apologetics.

Steve shares about transactional leadership as well as the more effective transformative leadership. He discusses practical values to look for in great leaders when hiring  and even helps define what makes a great leader.

Many people think leadership is mostly about personality and power, but great godly leaders are humble, servant oriented and supportive - just like Jesus.

On this podcast, Larry and Drew finishing their previous conversation about Leading in Conflict. Conflict is not something we can avoid in church leadership. Like any relationship, there will be moments of disagreement and hurt feelings. We must step into uncomfortable conversations at times to seek forgiveness or understanding. Jesus has given us the blueprint for dealing with conflict in Matt. 18 and today we discuss walking through this process.

Here is the final 5 aspects of dealing with a process in conflict (to finish our list from the previous podcast).

1.   Be charitable and kind!!!

2.   Remember the goal of confrontation is to help the person not humiliate them.

3.   Do not save up criticisms and dump them all at once on the person at one time.

4.   Avoid using words like “always” & “never”

**5.     Never make comparisons!

In this podcast Larry and Drew begin the first part of a discussion around "Leading Through Conflict". As church leaders we all face situations and seasons of conflict. They are never easy to navigate, but God has given us some direction in His word to lead us in how we respond, love and engage through conflict.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Spiritual Opposition
  • Lines of Authority Are Sometimes Unclear
  • People Don't Like Change
  • Church Leadership Can Involve High Stress
  • Often Churches Attract Disgruntled Leaders Looking for Influence

We also start our list of how to process through conflict:

  1. Think through the behavior the person needs to change - See the Problem and the solution.
  2. Prayerfully decide how you can best get through to them.  - Criticism, depending on how it is delivered, can either be costly                                                   or priceless! - When done correctly --- both parties win!!!
  3. Rehearse what you will say! - The choice of words is crucial!!!
  4. Decide when it would be best to speak to the person!!! - Don’t rush but don’t wait!!
  5. Decide where it would be best to speak to them! - As neutral as possible!

Discipleship has become a buzz word in the church over the last few years because in many ways it has been overlooked, or at the very least not been done so well by the greater church.  As church leaders we've come to realize that we need to do a better job on investing in the lives of people. The goal is not just more information or data, but that we can help people truly become who God wants them to be.

Eli Semedo is on staff at the Baptist Missionary Association office of Missions, has served as a missionary in his home country, Cape Verde Islands, as well as Thailand. Eli loves to disciple men because a few mentors were willing to pour into his life.

2 Tim. 2:2
"and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also."

On this episode - Larry and Drew continue the discussion about knowing when to leave a ministry position. One thing pastors may face is the temptation of thinking the "grass is greener" some where else. We can often wish for more people, bigger buildings, a better salary, different team members and so on. God however, may want you stay put on the dry and barren land that is your current context. How do you know what to do? Maybe the Lord is wanting to use you to prepare that dry ground for the next ministry season that comes after you leave.

If you're feeling this struggle or another one - take a listen and let this conversation be a blessing to you!

On today's episode of the Healthy Church Podcast, Drew and Larry discuss the difficult question in ministry about when to leave. Whether it's a succession plan or relational dynamic that causes you to consider leaving your ministry post. It's important that we lead with humility and connectedness to the Lord for His direction.

Often ministry leaders can fall into different traps that cause you to lose focus on the main thing. As we discuss these 8 different traps, we talk about our own experience in wrestling through this question and how God's Word can lead us if we'll just listen.

  1. The Maintenance Trap
  2. The Heart-Loss Trap
  3. The "Vision-HiJack" Trap
  4. The Discouragement Trap
  5. The Bitterness Trap

On today's podcast Larry and Drew discuss what it takes for Pastors to continue to lead through so much of the unknown in this Covid reality. We trust the Lord, we continue to have honest conversations about how we're processing our questions and struggles, and we continue to be faithful as we wait on the Lord.

Larry reminds us of a thought from Tony Evans, in that the Lord hasn't promised that we would be conquerors from trials and challenges but "IN" them. He is with us and He will walk with us through all that we face.

As church leaders it is so important that we continue to lead transparently, but also with our hope securely in the One who has promised to "Build His church and the gates of Hell will not prevail against it"!

Have you ever wanted to sit down and ask a few questions to one of the leading pastors in one of the fastest growing churches in the country? That's exactly what we got the chance to do. (Recorded this past March 2020).

Bob Russell was the pastor of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, KY. He started at 22 years old when the church had 120 members and 20 plus years later he retired when the church was running nearly 20,000 members. He's the author of over a dozen books and a wealth of knowledge for all things pastoral ministry. I (Drew) met him this past Spring when I was invited to be a part of his Pastors Retreat in Louisville. It was a great week of intensive conversation and mentorship by Bob and others and I was so blessed to be a part of it.

The week of that retreat was the week that COVID-19 hit our country and all of our churches. I came home and we decided to cancel in person services that week. We recorded this podcast at that time in the Spring and are just now publishing this interview with Bob.

In the interview Bob gives us some great wisdom around church health, hiring, church growth, the pastors family life, personal relationships and accountability.

In the never ending days of COVID -19 its so easy to grow weary. We continue to try and be an encouraging voice to our churches and assure them that soon we will getting back to normal, or at least we pray that is the case. Deep down however, we sense that we don't have what it takes, that we're not enough, or that we're going to fail in one way or another. GOOD! When we finally realize that we're human and capable of mistakes and struggle, we can then begin to know and experience the full extent of the power of God (2 Cor. 12:9).

Today Larry and Drew discuss how we as pastors should be learning to embrace our weaknesses. They discuss five ways to start that process, ultimately learning to dig deeper into an authentic relationship with Jesus.

Larry and Drew welcome their mentor and friend Jerry Kidd to help tell the story of what God has been up to for the last three and a half years replanting Temple Baptist Church in Little Rock, AR to South City Church.

They discuss conversations and miracles leading up to the decision to replant and change the name of Temple. They also talk about the role prayer, strategy, and the Holy Spirit played in this wonderful story of redemption.

Temple Baptist was once the flagship church in its association, but years of congregational voting led to a fight for control of the church, causing it to begin to die. Pastor Jerry Kidd came on as pastor leading what was left of that congregation to a season of prayer and seeking the next steps for the church. After a year of continual prayer, the Lord led Drew Cline to come and lead the replant process.

South City has now more than tripled in less than 4 years seen more than 100 people come to Christ!

Larry and Drew talk about the very real struggle pastors and church leaders face with the on-going stresses of making decisions.

"Decision fatigue is the biological effect of continuously flexing one's decision-making muscles. The more choices a person makes throughout the day, the more challenging each one becomes for the brain. Eventually, the brain begins to look for shortcuts."

Decision Fatigue Signs:
-Procrastination
-Impulsivity
-Avoidance
-Indecision

  • Seek the Lord and His wisdom first

  • Seek wise counsel – there is safety in a counsel of many (church/Community)

  • Seek the safety of your people – the most loving thing you can do.

  • Be willing to be wrong – If you have to punt – change directions, apologize and move forward.

  • Do ALL you can for due diligence – CLEAN, LEAD, COMMUNICATE, Give GRACE, receive Grace

  • Give decisions back to your people – ultimately they make their choice on return and risk.

  • Rest in the decision you’ve made and given to the Lord (Phil. 4:6-7 pray and have peace)

It's been said "you can't draw water from a dry well" and our question to you is ARE YOU RUNNING ON EMPTY? But by God’s grace we can begin to dialogue about what changes can be made in our lives as leaders, and in the churches we serve, in order to better Love God and His people.
