Mary Washington Hospital Clinical Research Nurse Christine Emery talked with Ted Schubel on Town Talk about the history of local research and what’s taking place right now–a Low Dose CT study.
Snowden at Fredericksburg has two outpatient programs for those in need of intensive therapy or substance abuse counseling. The Partial Hospitalization Program goes five days a week for seven hours each day. Most patients attend for two weeks, and the day includes group therapy, medication management, art and music therapy, and meditation.
The Intensive Outpatient Program runs three days a week for three hours each day, and most patients attend for 8 weeks. It focuses on substance abuse recovery using a 12-step program.
We spoke with the program director and three patient graduates of the programs to hear more about how the programs have helped them.

Bringing a newborn home can be scary, especially if you've never been a parent before. Kimberley Good, BSN, RN, LCCE, IBCLC, is the Coordinator of Parent Child Education Department at the Family Birth Place at Mary Washington Hospital.
She teaches our parenting classes and joined us to talk about tips for new parents bringing their infant home for the first time.
The Mary Washington Healthcare Stroke Awareness program aims to increase community awareness about stroke. Despite progress in stroke prevention and improvements in medical care, stroke remains the fifth leading cause of death and the major cause of long-term disability in adults in the United States. Stroke is a medical emergency. Recognizing stroke and getting the right treatment quickly can save lives and lead to improved outcomes. In this presentation, we define stroke, review the time-sensitive treatments for stroke and discuss how you can be "stroke smart" by learning the three R’s” of stroke: reduce risk, recognize symptoms with BE-FAST, and respond immediately by calling 9-1-1!

Karen Bayer is a retired Fairfax County Public Schools educator of 31 years, and is also retired military. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 65, it was the beginning of a life-changing journey for the professional mobile DJ and small home business entrepreneur.
It is difficult to put into words the impact she had on the people she met, and the lives she touched throughout her cancer treatment, but we gathered Karen and her care team to talk about her journey in the hopes it will encourage others embarking on the same path.

insideMWHC sat down with Licensed Professional Counselor LaToya Ray and Licensed Clinical Social Worker Stephanie Fidgeon from Mary Washington Hospital Snowden at Fredericksburg, to talk about strategies to help your child identify and express emotion, and steps to take if you feel like your child is struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts.
This podcast was recorded in February 2020 before the outbreak of COVID-19 closed schools and changed our way of life, but the advice from our experts will still apply.

Ted Schubel of Town Talk on 1230 WFVA sat down with Dr. Rhonda Winchester, a pediatrician with Mary Washington Pediatrics. Dr. Winchester's interest in medicine started early when her sister was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
She encourages parents-to-be to choose their pediatrician before they give birth, so they have time to interview the providers, visit the office, and feel comfortable with the practice. Pediatricians can almost be an extension of the family, so it's important to develop a close relationship.
