Unraveling the Hidden Scarcity Paradigm to Build a True Second Act.

On the outside, high-achieving professionals often appear to have everything figured out: successful careers, strong incomes, and polished lives. On the inside, many quietly carry a heavy load of secret shame, perfectionism, and deep anxiety around money or past financial mistakes that stall their next move. Debbie Movsesian—a 20-year cardiology physician assistant turned transformative mind-body coach—joins Jay Ramsden to talk about what happens when you're ready to retire your old role without decommissioning your drive, and how deep-seated patterns keep high-capacity people from stepping into what's next.

In this honest, peer-to-peer conversation, Debbie shares her journey from feeling unfulfilled in traditional Western medicine to facing a major financial trauma that forced her to examine her own relationship with scarcity. She breaks down how our early "snow globe paradigms"—the unexamined beliefs about money, achievement, and security formed in childhood—run on autopilot and quietly limit what we believe is possible for our second act. Debbie introduces her Mind-Body Liberation approach, showing how simple somatic tools like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT tapping) calm a hyper-vigilant nervous system, release old guilt, and create the internal space needed to launch a meaningful second-act project grounded in genuine joy rather than relentless pressure.

Strategic Highlights:

  • Retiring the Role, Not the Drive: How to redirect high-performance energy into a second act without carrying over old burnout.
  • The Snow Globe Effect: How invisible childhood money beliefs dictate your adult decisions and career shifts.
  • Releasing Secret Shame: Overcoming the fear of failure, financial mistakes, and the pressure to look "perfect."
  • Somatic Nervous System Reset: Using tapping and body awareness to shift out of fight-or-flight decision-making into Second-Act clarity.

Debbie Movsesian Bio (Learn More): Debbie Movsesian is a cardiology physician assistant turned mind-body transformation coach. She uses somatic tools, nervous system regulation, and EFT tapping to help high-achieving professionals dissolve hidden money blocks, release perfectionism, and launch a Second Act rooted in true freedom.

The Internal Renovation: Managing the Collision of Hormonal Chaos and the Empty Nest.

When the demanding logistics of raising children suddenly clear out of your house, the quiet that follows can be interrupted by a different kind of storm. One in ten women are currently leaving the workforce at the absolute peak of their careers because perimenopause and menopause are misunderstood, ignored, or treated as entirely private failures. Lisa Boate—founder of Liberated Menopause and host of the Transforming 45 podcast—joins Jay Ramsden to break down the physical, emotional, and systemic realities of what happens when hormone shifts collide with career peaks, aging parents, and an empty home.

In this deeply candid, jargon-free conversation, Lisa frames perimenopause not as a deficit, but as a mirror of puberty in reverse—a phase of internal chaos where fluctuating hormones cause the body's communication systems to misfire. We move far beyond hot flashes to address the lived realities of deep brain fog, word-recall issues, sleep disruption, and musculoskeletal symptoms like frozen shoulder. Lisa offers practical relationship tools like the "Helped, Heard, or Hugged" framework to help couples move past legacy logistical scripts and navigate times when emotional energy is highly expensive—a message specifically critical for husbands and partners looking to understand the convergence of these midlife storms without trying to "fix" them. Learn how to transition from feeling invisible to reclaiming your sovereignty, how to utilize targeted preventative foundations like her signature assessment, and how to arrive completely prepared to advocate for your health at your next doctor's visit using structured clinical data.

Strategic Highlights:

  • The Reality of Peri-Chaos: Why standard hormone blood tests can be deeply misleading and what a skilled practitioner actually looks for.
  • The Energy-Expensive Marriage: Practical communication strategies to de-escalate conflict and remove blame when patience runs low.
  • The Doctor-Ready Protocol: How to utilize simple symptom tracking and specific data to maximize a short 15-minute medical appointment.
  • Asset Over Deficit: Shifting the cultural narrative from midlife decay to a powerful phase of identity reconnection and personal freedom.

Lisa Boate Bio (Learn More):is an educator turned menopause coach, consultant, and host of Transforming 45. The founder of Liberated Menopause, she helps high-achieving women decode perimenopausal symptoms, build medical advocacy frameworks, and protect their professional visibility through major identity shifts.

The Invisible Graduate: Navigating the Automated Black Hole of the Modern Job Market.

Watching your adult child return home with a great degree, a high GPA, and a stack of completed internships—only to face months of total silence from employers—is one of the most unexpected stressors of the empty nest season. The immediate, well-meaning instinct for most parents is to tell them to "just apply more" or "start networking." Career strategist and founder of Grads Hired, Debra Shaw, joins Jay Ramsden to expose why these generic numbers games backfire completely, driving motivated young adults straight into deep job-search burnout and leaving them stuck in their childhood bedrooms.

In this clear, practical conversation, Debra breaks down how the hiring landscape has fundamentally changed from the days of physical resumes and local drop-offs. Today, easy-apply portals function as automated black holes controlled by applicant tracking systems that look for specific metric-driven accomplishments rather than basic job duties. Debra shares tactical counter-strategies to make grads humanly visible again, including how to leverage low-hanging alumni networks on LinkedIn without the "ick," how to comment surgically on a hiring manager's projects, and why targeting small businesses often prevents the massive corporate layoff cycle. Learn how to pivot your own relationship from an exhausted, nagging enforcer into a supportive advisor, why first jobs require baseline momentum over a perfect "passion," and how to help your adult child confidently walk through the professional doors you open for them.

Strategic Highlights:

  • The "Apply More" Illusion: Why spamming automated application buttons destroys a graduate's confidence and creates artificial barriers.
  • Resumes That Show Proof: How rewriting restaurant or entry-level experience to feature distinct metrics changes the ROI on an application tracking scan.
  • The Intergenerational Communication Gap: Navigating Gen Z’s soft-skill deficits, from professional email architecture to reading workplace social cues.
  • The 12-to-18-Month Rule: Why modern career paths reward fast tracking and early momentum over legacy long-term corporate loyalty.

Debra Shaw Bio (Learn More): Debra Shaw is a premier career strategist and the founder of Grads Hired. The Physical 401k: Safeguarding Your Most Valuable Asset for the Long Game.

We spend decades meticulously planning for financial retirement, but we rarely perform the same rigorous audit on our physical wealth. Timothy Ward— fitness mentor, speaker, and bestselling author of The Goat Within —joins Jay Ramsden to discuss why low muscle mass and a declining VO2 max are the quietest, most dangerous health risks facing people over 50. Drawing from his own journey of turning childhood adversity into a life rooted in strength, Tim breaks down why generic, cookie-cutter gym routines fail and why "acting your age" is a fast track to physical bankruptcy.

In this clear, grounded conversation, Tim introduces the Longevity Matrix — a comprehensive system that balances resistance training, nutrition, cardiovascular health, and rest. He exposes the common midlife trap of doing endless cardio or high-rep lifting, explaining how it can actually accelerate muscle loss instead of building stability. Learn the real science behind how resistance training uses adaptive remodeling to protect bone density, why custom biomarker blood testing is a game-changer for eliminating toxic nutrition, and how to build a supportive "posse" to keep you accountable. It’s time to get honest about what you want your 70s and 80s to look like and build the undeniable energy reserves required to outlast aging.

Strategic Highlights:

  • The Shocking Statistics: Understanding why low strength and low VO2 max are tied to massive increases in early mortality risk.
  • The Cardio Trap: Why adding more treadmill time without targeted resistance training can cost you the very muscle tissue you need to stay lean and stable.
  • The Longevity Matrix: A tactical breakdown of the six pillars required to transition your body from decay to active reinvention.
  • Rest and Recovery: The biological case for afternoon naps and protecting your physical currency as you age.

Timothy Ward Bio (Learn More): is a fitness mentor, longevity specialist, and author of The Goat Within. At 61, he helps high-achievers protect their physical wealth through his signature Longevity Matrix and practical resistance training protocols designed to combat muscle loss and optimize cellular health.

The Strategic Settlement: Managing Marital Uncertainty and Gray Divorce After the Kids Launch.

When the constant background noise of full-time parenting finally clears, the resulting quiet can cause a long-simmering marriage to become suddenly loud. Tamara Frankfurt Odinec and Shari Joseph (former American Express corporate strategy leaders and co-founders of the expert-led divorce support platform My Next Chapter) join Jay Ramsden to dismantle the isolation surrounding midlife relationship transitions. Whether you are dealing with "marital uncertainty," actively co-parenting through a "deferred divorce" limbo, or facing a sudden gray divorce once the nest is empty, this conversation provides a high-level operational map for your next steps.

Drawing from their own contrasting corporate-level and high-conflict experiences, Tamara and Shari unpack why having just a therapist and a lawyer often leaves high-achieving parents feeling completely overwhelmed. They share data-driven insights on shifting cultural stigmas and explain why research shows that adult children in their twenties often face unique structural identity crises when a long-term family framework disinvests. Discover the tactical utility of confidential, anonymous spaces for legal and financial auditing before retaining counsel, how to balance intense guilt with personal freedom, and how to spot the "glimmers" of an intentional, self-sovereign second act.

Strategic Highlights:

  • The Marital Uncertainty Audit: Understanding why taking a pause to research options does not automatically mean choosing divorce.
  • The Limbo Framework: Navigating the practical living arrangements, communication systems, and boundaries of a deferred divorce.
  • The 20s Identity Shift: Managing the psychological impact of midlife family restructuring on young adult children.
  • Pre-Legal Infrastructure: Utilizing targeted financial templates, mental health checklists, and anonymous communities to anchor yourself before hiring an attorney.

They blend digital marketing, legal frameworks, and mental health resources to help individuals navigate marital uncertainty, gray divorce, and high-stakes identity reorganization.

Your Child Isn’t the Only One Launching: It’s Time for Your Own Re-Envisioning.

When Nate Turner’s 16-year-old son told him, "It's not too late for your dreams. You've still got time." it was a tectonic shift. Nate had spent decades reverse-engineering a world-class life for his son. From humble beginnings, to international soccer and a PhD from Carnegie Mellon only to realize he had neglected his own Identity Equity.

In this high-authority conversation, Nate Turner, creator of The Life Template, joins Jay Ramsden to discuss why "letting kids be kids" is a myth and how parents can move from being the "Manager" to becoming a "Renowned Global Intellectual" in their own right. If you’ve ever felt like your best years were spent building someone else’s foundation, this episode is your blueprint for a strategic second-half pivot.

Episode Highlights:

  • The Myth of "Kids Being Kids": Why we are actually raising adults and why every parent needs a "Human Engineering" mindset.
  • Reverse-Design Success: How Nate used a Harvard application as a roadmap to build global competence and humanitarian drive in his son from birth.
  • The 10:00 p.m. Reality Check: Nate shares the vulnerable moment in a Best Buy parking lot when he realized he had no dreams of his own and how he started journaling them into existence.
  • The Life Template Framework: A deep dive into Nate’s three pillars: Intellectual Ambition, Global Competence, and Humanitarian Drive.
  • The "Who" Audit: Understanding the three dimensions of who you are and why the only person who defines your success as a parent is the child you raised.

Key Takeaways:

  • The North Star: Why you cannot find your "Next" without a GPS destination in mind.
  • Static vs. Dynamic Humanity: Proof that you are not the same person you saw in the mirror yesterday.
  • Backward Design for Empty Nesters: How to apply Nate’s engineering principles to your own "Empty Nest Life" to lead the planet better than you found it.

“Often, we are left just to watch from the sidelines.”

Those words came from a heartbreaking email sent by a listener at 10:00 p.m. from her quiet kitchen. With two of her children getting married this spring, she’s wrestling with a feeling many of us know all too well: the sense that the "main event" of our lives is officially over.

In this solo deep dive, I’m challenging the idea that launching our children is the "final step" of parenting. The truth? You aren’t being fired; you’re being promoted. We are moving from the director’s chair to a front-row seat, and while the transition is "brutal," it’s also where the real relationship begins.

In this episode, we explore:

  • The Identity Shift: Why being "unnecessary" as a manager is actually the goal of a successful launch.
  • The Swim Team Lesson: A personal story about a recent wedding that reminded me why we did all those years of "carpool duty" in the first place.
  • The "Director" vs. The "Human": How to let your old role take a bow so your truest self can finally take the stage.
  • The WAIT & WEIGHT Method: My practical, in-the-moment physical exercise to help you stop micromanaging and start holding a "safe harbor" for your adult children.

If you’re sitting with your coffee today feeling like you’re stuck on the sidelines, this episode is your invitation to look at the field differently. It’s time to stop looking at what’s missing and start asking: What else?

"Is the silence a void we need to fill, or a space we need to protect?"

If you’ve been tuning in lately, you’ve heard some incredible experts in the studio—from downsizing gurus to neuroplasticity doctors. But today, the guest chair is empty, the lights are low, and it’s just us.

In this special "Reset" episode, Jay Ramsden returns to the show’s roots. He’s stepping out from behind the interviewer’s mic to share the candid "morning coffee thoughts" that hit when the house is finally quiet. It’s one thing to hear an expert talk about purpose; it’s another to stand in your kitchen on a Tuesday morning realizing your role has shifted from "Manager" to a "Consultant" position you never actually applied for.

In this solo session, Jay dives into:

  • The Solo Sessions Return: Why Jay is bringing back deep-dive episodes to make sense of life in real-time.
  • The Morning Coffee Struggle: How a hot cup of coffee can feel like a win one day and a reminder of what’s missing the next.
  • Manager vs. Consultant: Navigating the identity crisis that happens when your "parenting title" is retired.
  • A Promise of Candor: Why we have to be honest about the messy middle before we can "wind up" for the next chapter.

Whether you’re a few steps ahead or a few steps behind, remember: you aren't just an empty nester. You’re a pioneer of a whole new life.

"The body keeps the score."

We’ve all heard that phrase, but what does it actually mean when you’re 55 and dealing with back pain, migraines, or digestive issues that no doctor seems to be able to explain?

In today’s episode, I’m joined by Dr. David Clarke, President of the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms. Dr. Clarke shares the incredible story of an "elevator ride" that shifted his entire medical career—taking him from a traditional gastroenterologist to a pioneer in treating neuroplastic symptoms. We dive deep into why almost 30% of adults in midlife suffer from chronic pain that isn't caused by a physical injury, but by "brain-generated" signals triggered by stress, childhood adversity, and the "deep stress" of being a lifelong people-pleaser.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • The "Fifth Floor" Breakthrough: How talking can cure physical conditions that specialized tests can't find.
  • The 7,000 Patient Journey: What Dr. Clarke learned from decades of uncovering hidden emotional triggers.
  • Neuroplasticity vs. Structural Damage: How to tell if your pain is a "pinched nerve" or a brain-generated signal.
  • The People-Pleaser Connection: Why caregivers and "strong" personalities are often the most prone to these symptoms.
  • Parenting Aftermath: How our own childhood experiences shape our health today—and how Dr. Clarke changed his own parenting style based on his research.

If you’ve been told "they can't find anything wrong," but you know the pain is real, this episode is your invitation to look deeper and start a new pathway toward healing.

Your house didn’t suddenly get bigger; your life just got different. Transitioning to an empty nest can turn a lively home into a quiet space filled with big questions:

Do we need all this room? Should we stay, go, or renovate?

In this insightful episode, real estate agent and author Kim Costa joins us to explore how empty nesters can choose a home that fits their current identity, not the one from a decade ago.

Kim shares her unique Wheelhouse Assessment, starting with the “Four Ms”—myself, mastery, mission, and mates—and expanding into the wheel of life: health, environment, fun, romance, career, finances, family, and spirituality. You’ll learn how to separate essential needs from “nice to have” features using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

With practical strategies for repurposing rooms, avoiding new problems when solving old ones, and understanding the benefits of renting first, Kim demystifies the home transition process. The concept of “lock and leave” living is also explored for those desiring more freedom with less maintenance.

Key Takeaways:

  • Identify signs your home no longer fits your lifestyle.
  • Use the Four Ms to clarify your identity and support system.
  • Define your ideal lifestyle through the wheel of life.
  • Start with a clear vision for your next phase.
  • Renting first can test a new community before committing.

Join us as Kim Costa highlights that this chapter isn’t an ending—it’s a chance to redefine, rediscover, and reignite your life. If today’s episode resonates with you, take that first step and visit thisemptynestlife.com to start your journey.

When your children launch or your career ends, a strange silence can set in—and with it, the big question: What’s Next?

In this inspiring episode, Jack Calhoun, founder of Encore Career Lab, shares a hopeful, practical path from drifting to purposeful direction. He discusses how many of us face an identity crunch when titles no longer define us—and how to use agency, values, and curiosity to craft a second act that truly fits.

In this inspiring episode, best-selling author and performer Troy Horne joins us to explore how to redesign your future after 40 by tapping into your greatest asset—your experience. From Broadway breakthroughs as Tom Collins in RENT to co-authoring a mindset book with his son, Troy demonstrates how creativity, courage, and compassion can flourish alongside family priorities—and how to move forward when your heart calls.

We delve into the arc of real change: the initial decision to start, the honeymoon phase where momentum builds, and the “are-you-sure” resistance that often follows. Troy introduces “scar power,” the idea that past setbacks deepen judgment and accelerate learning—proof that late bloomers like Julia Child and Martha Stewart show timing is a feature, not a bug.

Highlights & Key Takeaways:

  • The “preview” stage of empty nesting and shifting home energy.
  • Permission to start again after 40—your second act is possible now.
  • Transform scars and setbacks into resilience and confidence.

When your children leave home, the loudest voice isn't always the one you want to hear—it's your inner critic. It whispers doubts, tells you "you shouldn't," "you can't," or "you're not enough," leaving you feeling stuck and uncertain about how to move forward. However, there's a practical, proven framework that can quiet the noise and help you reclaim your peace: Positive Intelligence (PQ).

In this episode, we sit down with coach Kevin Gazzara to demystify PQ and explore how it applies to life after the nest empties. Kevin introduces us to the Judge and its nine accomplice saboteurs—Controller, Hyper-Achiever, Restless, Stickler, Pleaser, Hyper-Vigilant, Avoider, Victim, and Hyper-Rational—that hijack our thoughts with seemingly true but unhelpful stories. He explains how these saboteurs influence our daily lives and how shifting into the Sage mindset—empathy, curiosity, creativity, and decisive action—can transform challenges into opportunities.

Highlights & Key Takeaways:

  • Positive Intelligence (PQ) offers a prescriptive, practical approach to mental well-being.
  • The Judge and its nine saboteurs undermine confidence and clarity.
  • Moving from threat-based thinking to Sage powers—empathy, curiosity, creativity, and decisiveness—shifts your perspective.
  • After caregiving and life changes, reframe your identity for reinvention instead of loss.
  • The Pleaser pattern can lead to burnout—setting oxygen-mask boundaries prevents that.

Join us and challenge the noisy inner critic. Map out a clear, actionable path for growth, reinvention, and community—because the person you already are has everything it takes to lead your best life.

Here's your free PQ assessment and practical next steps!

When your focus shifts from raising children to looking at your own next chapter, it’s easy to see this as an ending. But in reality, it’s the beginning of one of life's most emotionally enriching phases. In this inspiring episode, Dr. Deborah Heiser—host of The After 40 Podcast and founder of The Mentor Project—reframes aging and empty nesting as opportunities for growth, connection, and fulfillment.

While society often emphasizes physical decline with age this period of "generativity versus stagnation" is a prime time to give back—through mentoring, creating, exploring, or sharing our wisdom. Dr. Heiser discusses the five essential components of true mentorship—generativity, receptivity, intrinsic motivation, meaningful connection, and trust—and emphasizes that everyone has something valuable to offer, regardless of age or background. From passing down family recipes to guiding new community members, mentorship enriches both mentor and mentee, creating a ripple of connection and purpose.

Highlights & Key Takeaways:

  • Our physical decline doesn’t define our emotional or spiritual growth; it continues upward throughout life.
  • The empty nest phase opens up mental and emotional bandwidth for purpose-driven living.

  • Mentoring creates purpose and satisfaction for both mentor and mentee, fostering connection that money can’t buy.

The transition to an empty nest can feel like an identity crisis for parents who have dedicated years to raising children. The question then arises: what’s next? How do you find purpose, passion, and fulfillment in this new phase of life?

In this inspiring episode, Dr. Janelle explains the two stages of human development: the unconscious “boot camp” where we seek external validation, and the conscious “creating heaven on earth” phase, where we connect deeply with our hearts. She offers practical, powerful strategies to overcome subconscious blocks—like her insight: "If you challenge yourself, you'll attract support. If you stay in your comfort zone, you'll attract challenges."

For those asking, “What now?” after children leave home, she advocates connecting with your heart through gratitude and self-love to discover inspiration for your next steps.

Are you feeling trapped in your empty nest years but can't quite understand why? That paradox of being busy yet unfulfilled, with success feeling just out of reach, is more common than you think—especially among men who struggle to verbalize these emotions.

In this powerful episode, John Mylant unpacks the deeper reasons behind these feelings and offers a transformative perspective on how to move forward. He explores the ongoing battle between our subconscious fear—our primal self-preservation instinct—and love, which requires conscious effort and fuels growth. At the core of this struggle is the inner critic—a relentless voice telling us we’re not enough, won’t succeed, or shouldn’t try. When we listen to this inner dialogue, we trap ourselves in cycles of self-doubt, indecision, and inconsistency, making real progress impossible.

The key insight? Everything we desire is already within us—"just a decision away."

Highlights & Key Takeaways:

  • Feeling stuck often stems from disconnecting what we do from what we truly want inside.
  • The inner critic fuels self-doubt, leading to indecision and inconsistent action.
  • Living in the present, with honesty and self-awareness, provides clarity and direction.
  • True answers emerge when you stop forcing and start questioning.
  • The inner critic will never disappear completely—learning to turn it into a barely audible whisper is the key to growth.

John Mylant BioBased in Colorado Springs, CO, John specializes in working with men who feel the pressure to succeed but are secretly battling self-sabotage, fear of success, and the weight of playing small. These are men who lead their families, businesses, and communities—but quietly struggle to lead themselves.

Having lived this journey himself, John knows what it feels like to have potential burning inside you while being stuck in hesitation and insecurity. After overcoming his own internal war with fear, doubt, and a scarcity mindset, he dedicated his life to helping other men break free—without sacrificing family, faith, or financial stability.

What if the empty nest isn't the end of your parenting journey, but a new beginning—an opportunity to reconnect with yourself?

In this enlightening episode, Bernadette Catalana, author of Daughter Lessons: Wise and Witty Reflections on Leading, Learning From, and Loving our Daughters, challenges us to reframe this pivotal life transition.

Throughout the conversation, Bernadette dismantles common misconceptions that launching adult children signifies failure or loss. Instead, she celebrates it as the natural outcome of good parenting: “If you're doing it right, your children will leave your home and you'll get fired from the best job you ever had—and that’s the perfect outcome.”

Most profoundly, Bernadette reminds us that our children are not “our happiness projects.” Releasing expectations allows both parents and children to pursue authentic lives, leading to genuine happiness and meaningful connection.

Highlights & Key Takeaways:

  • Understanding your mother’s relationships with her own mother can offer healing from “mother wounds.”
  • Transitioning from “the sage on the stage” to “the guide on the side” in parenting encourages trust and autonomy.
  • Children are individuals with their own paths, not reflections of parenting success or failure.
  • Respect and trust in your adult children’s judgment strengthen your relationship and their autonomy.

Bernadette Catalana BioBernadette Catalana is one of seven children—six of them daughters. She is also a lawyer, mentor, cooking enthusiast, and avid yoga practitioner. But the role she identifies with most is mother to Carly and Courtney. She grew up in Endicott, New York, raised her girls in Rochester, New York and currently lives on Central Park with her significant other and her Havanese, Jackson. Her daughters, who are now grown and starting families of their own, are both within walking distance. This is a collection of her many essays on motherhood.

Feeling lost now that your nest has emptied?

You’re not alone—but that silence in your home doesn’t have to be the end of your story. Instead, it can be the opening note to your most authentic chapter yet.

In this transformative episode, we explore how major life changes—like empty nesting, career shifts, or personal reinvention—are rooted in who we want to become, not just how we’ll do it.

Through relatable stories like Lisa, who questioned if binge-watching Netflix was her new purpose, and John, who believed he was “too old to start over,” we see how the stories we tell ourselves shape our experiences during these shifts.

What makes this approach different? It’s all about doing the inner work first. Before rushing into activities or projects, we examine the beliefs, fears, and identities that might be keeping us stuck. Guided by Carol Dweck’s research on mindset, we learn to shift from a fixed mindset (“I’m only a parent”) to a growth mindset (“Who can I become now?”).

You’ll get practical prompts to uncover limiting beliefs, embrace vulnerability as your strength, and celebrate small wins that propel you forward. Rediscover passions you shelved, and open the door to unexpected joy and purpose.

Remember George Eliot’s words: "It’s never too late to be what you might have been." Whether you’re navigating an empty nest or other life transitions, this episode will help you move from simply watching life unfold to actively directing your next chapter.

Download the free companion guide at bit.ly/whobeforehow and start your journey of rediscovery today. Your best self is waiting—are you ready to meet them?

Key Highlights & Takeaways:

  • True transformation begins within—your beliefs, identity, and emotions set the foundation.
  • Your emotional reactions are messages revealing the stories you tell yourself.
  • Adopting a growth mindset opens doors to new possibilities.
  • Vulnerability is essential—acknowledging fears creates space for growth.
  • Small, intentional actions can lead to profound mindset shifts.
  • Focus on the "who" before the "how" to build a sustainable, authentic future.
  • Reinvention is accessible—anyone willing to believe in their potential.

Graduation season often brings a sudden, gut-wrenching realization: your child is leaving, and life as you've known it is about to change forever.

This episode explores that pivotal moment when parents shift from full-time caretakers to part-time advisors.

Instead of resisting or pretending the change isn’t happening, discover how embracing the mantra "Let Life Evolve" can transform this challenging time into an opportunity for growth and renewal.

We dive into the powerful idea that within the word "challenge" lies "LLE"—a reminder that change is not just inevitable but also a catalyst for transformation.

You'll learn practical strategies for managing this transition: maintaining routines for stability, caring for your physical health, communicating openly, and proactively exploring new interests.

The key message?

The empty nest years are about possibility—not just loss. The skills that made you a great parent can now serve as tools for rediscovering yourself. This isn’t about replacing parenting with hobbies—it’s about reconnecting with the person beneath the role.

Highlights & Key Takeaways:

  • Resistance only makes transition harder; embrace change instead.
  • The acronym LLE (Let Life Evolve) reminds us to accept and flow with change.
  • Keep routines to provide stability during uncertain times.
  • Seek support—friends, family, or coaches—so you don’t have to navigate alone.
  • As relationships evolve, clear communication and healthy boundaries are essential.
  • Focus on what's possible now, rather than dwelling on what’s ending.
  • Rediscover interests and prioritize your physical health—don’t wait for retirement or grandchildren to start your next chapter.

Join us as we explore how this transition - filled with a mix of grief and gratitude - can become your next great opportunity for growth.

You don’t have to wait; your new life begins now.

Tune in, and remember: "Let Life Evolve."

What if your most profound life lessons could come from an unexpected journey? In this inspiring episode, I explore how my recent walk along the Camino de Santiago in Spain became a powerful metaphor for navigating the empty nest years—filled with surprises, deep connections, and personal growth.

Walking the Portuguese route with strangers from around the world pushed me beyond my comfort zone, revealing that the richest experiences often come from embracing detours rather than rushing to the finish line. When faced with a challenging climb, a simple question from a friend—"What’s the rush?"—became a guiding wisdom for embracing the present moment.

The true magic of the Camino was found in the connections formed along the way. Brief conversations with fellow pilgrims sparked feelings of transformation, and our nightly ritual of sharing a "crumb" (challenge) and "cookie" (joy) strengthened resilience and gratitude—key components proven to boost mental well-being during major transitions.

Through rain and sunshine, I discovered that each traveler brought unique "superpowers," from authenticity to embracing new experiences, inspiring me to pursue my dreams while savoring life's small moments. This journey taught me that necessary endings—like children leaving home or finishing a long walk—create space for new beginnings.

What’s your Camino? Whether it’s a new hobby, career change, or inner exploration, your next big adventure awaits. Take that first step—your most meaningful journey might be just around the corner.

When you're ready to craft a fulfilling new chapter, visit thisemptynestlife.com to learn how I can support you in designing a life full of purpose and joy.

Highlights & Key Takeaways:

  • Embrace detours over rushing — slowing down creates space for growth.
  • Deepen connections through shared vulnerability and gratitude practices.
  • Recognize the unique strengths ("superpowers") each person brings to your journey.
  • Mindfulness in everyday moments fuels profound self-discovery.
  • Necessary endings open doors for exciting new beginnings.

Join me on this journey of self-discovery, and maybe find your own Camino to fulfillment.

What happens to long-term relationships when the kids leave home? In this candid conversation, relationship coach Dr. Marie Murphy shares her insightful and judgment-free perspective on the growing phenomenon of gray divorce—the trend of couples separating after the age of 50.

With her PhD in sociology of sexuality, Dr. Murphy challenges conventional views on infidelity and relationship transitions. She emphasizes the importance of being honest with ourselves about what we truly want: “Do you want to reconnect, or do you just think you should want to reconnect?” This distinction lies at the heart of our discussion and leads to deeper explorations of relationship dynamics during midlife.

Highlights:

  • Understanding gray divorce: 40% of divorces now occur after age 50, often linked to infidelity.
  • The role of intentional curiosity in revitalizing relationships and fostering deeper connections.
  • The dilemma of feeling responsible for others' emotions and how it conflicts with cultural ideas of individualism.
  • Empowering thoughts that help you navigate your relationship choices without guilt or shame.

Key Takeaways:

  • Approaching infidelity with a non-judgmental mindset allows for clearer decision-making.
  • The sociology of sexuality focuses on understanding actual behaviors in relationships rather than adhering to societal norms.
  • Making relationship choices often involves balancing competing desires rather than straightforward right or wrong decisions.

Marie Murphy's Bio

Join us for a heartfelt conversation with Julie Voris as we explore the profound and often overlooked transition to empty nesting—a journey that many parents experience but few openly discuss. In a society lacking cultural roadmaps and generational models, this phase can leave parents feeling lost and uncertain about their purpose once their children become independent.

Julie shares her personal path of moving from Indiana to Florida while her three daughters embarked on their own independent lives across the country. She reveals a crucial insight: the initial empty nesting phase, when children leave for college, is merely a rehearsal for the deeper transition that occurs when they achieve full autonomy—landing jobs, forming significant relationships, and making major life decisions without parental input.

Highlights:

  • Emotional complexities during this transition, experiencing simultaneous feelings of pride, sadness, confusion, and excitement.
  • The empty nest phase as an opportunity for personal growth and identity reclamation.
  • The importance of seeking professional support and building a fulfilling life that fosters healthier relationships with adult children.

Key Takeaways:

  • Recognize that college is just a "dress rehearsal" for true empty nesting, where autonomy presents the biggest challenges.
  • Understand that feelings of confusion and sadness are common and should not be isolated or ashamed.
  • Strive to be the kind of person your adult children want to be around, demonstrating the value of self-improvement.

**Getting what you want from life really isn’t all that difficult when you make a point of asking yourself “what am I willing to do to get it?” The hard part is actually being willing to try anything and everything to get what you want.

Unfortunately, until you are willing to get really uncomfortable in your pursuit of what you want from life, you will have trouble attaining it no matter what you want.**

In this episode, I share 10 of the foundational pieces of The Success Principles – how to get from where you are to where you want to be – by Jack Canfield and how you can apply them to your life.

Traditionally, the fall tends to be a time for us to express the things we are grateful for in our lives especially as Thanksgiving arrives. My question to you is…is once a year enough to express the things we are grateful for in our lives?

Imagine if being grateful for what you do have actually opens a door to having more in your life. Crazy right?

W**ho’s doubting themselves these days? Are you saying me, me, me, me?

Doubt pops when you begin to wonder if you are in the right relationship, picked the right career, doing a good job as a parent, or asking yourself if you should leave that organization you’ve been with forever.

Doubt has a funny way of creeping into your life at the exact moment you don’t want it to because that it’s job. Doubt wants you to check yourself. Doubt wants to keep you safe. And doubt is really good at reminding you of all the other times you wanted to question things in your life and make a change because doubt is the way your brain keeps you safe and doing the comfortable things in your life.

In this episode, I teach you that doubt isn't a obstacle, how you can recognize it quickly, and then leverage it to empower yourself to get what what you want.**

When I say that your relationship with yourself is the cornerstone upon which all other relationships in your life are built, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Yep, that’s a no brainer. Of course I have to have a good relationship with myself to have relationships with other people that are solid.

And yet, do you?

Do you have a solid relationship with yourself mentally, physically, emotionally? What about with money? Or your time? I’m going to go out on a limb here and say your relationship with yourself is probably not as rock solid as you think because as humans we get stuck sometimes.

In this episode, I share twelve ways you can start having a better relationship with yourself so you can have better relationships with the people in your life that matter.

When you think of the words simplify and life where does your brain go? Does your brain say, yes, please let’s do this? Or does your brain say to you, hah like that will ever happen! You are a hot mess, your life is a hot mess, your relationships are a hot mess and there is nothing you can do about it. Nope, you’re going to live a complicated hot mess of a life forever.

I know from my work that everyone on the planet needs help simplifying their lives. The question isn’t a matter of need. Nope, it is a matter of whether or not you WANT to simplify your life. And the gatekeeper to that is your brain and the thoughts you have about what it will take to simplify your life.

In this episode I share five ways you can starting simplifying your life right now.

When you saw the episode title what went through your mind? Were you thinking about all of the things that make a day great? Time with friends. A good meal. Maybe a trip or vacation? Was it no stress? Maybe the kids were good.

You may have had some thoughts about what makes a day a day bad. There was that jerk at work. You got cut off in traffic when you were already running late. Maybe it was because your lunch order got screwed up or you had a fight with your best friend. Or perhaps the kids just weren’t listening to you that day.

**The curious thing about growth and change is that literally one thought or one action can change your life. For me, that thought was “I can impact people’s lives.” With kindness, with generosity and with an intention of being the best human I can be I can impact people’s lives.

And with that simple thought, I embarked on a journey to improve my mindset, improve my thinking, and to improve my skills as a coach. Growth is the key to success. So many times people will tell you to take action but it is deciding you want to change and then embracing the work to grow that is the key.

Here’s the thing when we are dealing with being unsure of ourselves and not knowing the next right step. The next right step is within you, you just are afraid to see it. To believe it. To become it. And by it I mean whatever it is you want to change in your life.

**How do you know when it is time to pivot? Whether it’s a job, a relationship, your emotional health, your physical health, or whatever else might drive you to seek change in your life the pivot always seems to come out of nowhere. But does it really?

How can you determine whether a pivot is needed in your life right now?

For me it was an aha moment when working with my coach. I hadn’t been experiencing the growth in my business that I had expected and one of the things my coach said to me is that you don’t fully believe it is done. You are not working on the thoughts and feelings you have about being an entrepreneur. And you’re definitely not focused on your beliefs about what is holding you back. And just like that I was at a pivot point. Okay, maybe it wasn’t just like that. It took about 8 months of work to get to the pivot but when you have an AHA moment it always seems like it comes from out of the blue.

**So how does being intentionally curious work? The work I have been doing on myself with my own coach has been about being intentionally curious about my thoughts. About the things that are holding me back from having the life I am meant to have and the business I am destined to build.

Being curious is what I bring my clients and to you each week. Everything I am working on myself is shared on this show in the hope it will provide you with a sense that you are not alone, that you are part of a bigger group of people all wanting to live their best lives.  All wanting to let go and move on.

At the end of the day, wee are not people who are drifting trying to find ourselves. No, we are people who are intentionally working to create ourselves. There is no room for wandering aimlessly here and that is what I dive into in this episode.

**Here are 3 things you can do today to improve your life right now (listen for the other 7 ;-)

  1. Focus on the here and now - As humans we spend a great deal of time replaying past situations or worrying about the future. Focusing on right now plays such a key role in improving our lives. When you focus on right now you spend brain energy on experiencing life in the moment which is 100% more enjoyable than wasting energy on past events or worrying about future events that haven’t taken place and might not ever happen.

  2. Be grateful, and pass it on - If you are not practicing gratitude on a daily basis you are missing out. I know, you might say I don’t have anything to be grateful for today. And, I say go deeper. Do you have your health? Do you have food on the table? What about a roof over your head? Sometimes reframing what we have in our lives – rather than what we don’t have – we find we are grateful for more than we realized.

  3. Go to bed earlier tonight - I can hear it now...but I’m a night owl. I hear you AND I used to be the same way. Getting at least 7.5 hours of sleep goes a long way to improving your life. When you have a consistent bedtime, over time you will start to see that you will rise before your alarm. The key here is consistency -- be consistent and try hitting the sack a little earlier.

**Our brains LOVE to focus on the negative. The mistakes we make. The miscues we have. And in reality, this is what our brain is supposed to do — protect us so we learn from our errors. But learning from our errors doesn’t mean we stay focused on the mistakes we make.

When you focus on what you did well, or what worked first — before focusing on the mistakes and miscues — you are training your brain to leverage the positives in every single situation. Even the ones where you think you did something wrong, made a mistake, or where you weren’t happy with the result. By going to what worked first, your brain will learn how best to intuit positive thinking in the future.

Positive thinking leads to positive feelings which lead to positive results in your life. Makes sense, right?**

**We hear it all the time: "Just take a leap of faith," The trouble with taking a leap of faith is that you need to place your trust in someone or something else. And our brains really do not like it when we have to trust someone or something else.

In this episode, I dive into what it means to do the work of believing in yourself, how you can generate new thinking and wipe out past beliefs about yourself.
