Drought can leave horse owners facing tough decisions. Do you keep grazing what’s left? Feed more hay? Hope for rain? Or could some of the things you’re hoping to get by with, make your pasture take even longer to recover?
On this episode of the Beyond the Barn podcast, host Katy Starr chats with returning guest expert and a listener favorite, Dr. Krishona Martinson, Equine Extension Specialist at the University of Minnesota, about protecting pastures and feeding horses during a drought including:
- Why one common pasture mistake can impact recovery long after the drought ends
- When feeding more quality hay is actually the smartest management decision
- The simple measurement that tells you whether your pasture is ready for horses or other livestock to get back to grazing
From knowing when to pull horses off pasture to understanding why brown grass isn’t always what is seems, Dr. Martinson shares practical, research-backed strategies that can help you make confident decisions when pasture becomes limited and keep a strong Forage Foundation for your animals, even in a drought.

What does “research -backed” actually mean in the horse industry and how much of what we hear is really science versus really good marketing?
On this episode of Beyond the Barn, host Katy Starr chats with Dr. Brian Nielsen, professor of equine exercise physiology at Michigan State University, and Dr. Kelly Vineyard, PhD equine nutritionist to discuss scientific literacy and how to tell if something is truly backed by good research or when it just sounds convincing, including:
- Why some of the most believable horse product claims may not actually prove anything
- Red flags that make researchers immediately skeptical
- What horse owners should look for before spending money on feed products or supplements
Plus, Dr. Nielsen shares hilarious stories from the racehorse world, the truth about placebo affects in horses and humans, and one “treatment” he swears has helped horses win races for years! By the end of this episode, you may never look at the phrase “research-backed” the same way again.

Spring is here and for many horse owners, that means one thing, it’s time to get back in the saddle. But here’s the catch - just because your horse feels ready doesn’t mean their body actually is.
On this episode of the Feeding Fumbles & Fixes series of Beyond the Barn, host Katy Starr chats with Dr. Kelly Vineyard, PhD equine nutritionist to break down what really happens when horses transition from winter downtime to spring work and the small adjustments that can make a big difference in performance, soundness, and overall health, including:
- What’s changing in your horse’s body as workload increases
- How seasonal feeding habits can unintentionally set horses up for setbacks
- What horse owners often overlook when moving from winter maintenance to getting back into performance mode

Many horse owners focus on choosing the best hay, grain, or supplements, but research shows that when you feed can also impact how well your horse utilizes protein and amino acids.
On this episode, co-hosts Dr. Tania Cubitt and Katy Starr and guest Dr. Sara Mastellar, equine nutrition researcher and professor at Ohio State ATI, break down her research on meal frequency and protein metabolism in horses, including:
- The difference between “just feeding protein” vs. ensuring your horse gets the right amino acids
- Why feeding multiple meals a day can improve your horse’s nutrient absorption
- Simple, practical ways to adjust your horse’s feeding routine for better health
As Dr. Mastellar mentions, “Observation is central to good horsemanship.” If you’ve ever wondered whether your feeding schedule is truly working for your horse, this is an episode you don’t want to miss!

On this episode, co-host Katy Starr and guest expert Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD, MS, PAS discuss the confusing terminology of NSC, WSC, ESC, sugars, starches, and fructans, including:
- What are sugars, starches, and fructans?
- What are non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) - is it something that can be measured or is it a calculation?
- What feed changes have the GREATEST impact on horses needing a low sugar and starch diet?
We’re breaking it down to better understand how carbohydrates are utilized in the horse’s body and how it matters more for certain horses than others. Dr. Duren also shares what is most often misunderstood by horse owners when it comes to ESC, WSC, and NSC. Don’t miss this episode!

Helpful Info –
NSC = starch + WSC
WSC = ESC + fructans
ESC = sugar
- A hay analysis will come back reporting on starch, ESC, and WSC
- A non-forage feed label will generally report on ESC, which is sugar, but this is still not quite the number for NSC

On this part one episode, co-host Katy Starr has a candid conversation with corporate life employee turned long distance horse rider and trailblazer for mental health, Jodie Morton of Green, Gold and Blues about:
- How the loss of those close to her inspired her journey to start Green, Gold and Blues, riding horses to break down the stigma with mental health in rural communities
- Leaving a relationship that threatened her own mental health, her bond with her horses and muted her voice, blindsiding her as an advocate for this cause
- How her horses, Thelma and Saké, have played a pivotal role in her trauma healing to help rebuild her confidence to ride and speak on mental health again
Through storytelling and sharing personal experiences, Jodie aims to raise awareness and create a safe space for others to open up about their own mental health journeys.
Upcoming, in episode 78, part two of our discussion with Jodie, we’ll continue our conversation more about her extensive trail riding experiences 1,800+ miles on the Bicentennial National Trail in Australia and the Continental Divide in the United States, her must-have gear for long distance rides and practical tips for a safe and successful trip, along with overcoming challenges.

On this episode, co-host Katy Starr and guest expert Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD, MS, PAS discuss healing a horse’s damaged digestive system including:
- Different ways horses can have a compromised or damaged digestive system and how to heal it
- Preventative solutions to minimize gastric ulcers in horses
- How an unstable microbiome can impact multiple functions of the horse’s body
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure – meaning it is easier (and most often cheaper!) to do what you can to keep something from happening in the first place rather than try to fix or repair the issue after it has happened.
What if you could give your horse exactly what its digestive system requires while simultaneously preventing other potential issues from occurring while you’re at it? You won’t want to miss out on this conversation!

Welcome back to the new year!
On this episode, co-host Katy Starr and guest expert Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD, MS, PAS discuss carbohydrate sensitivity in performance horses including:
- The differences between dietary starch, water soluble carbohydrates (WSC), ethanol soluble carbohydrates (ESC), and non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) – and what carbohydrate sensitive horses should and should NOT consume
- Understanding the role that alfalfa, teff grass, beet pulp, rice bran, flaxseed meal and more play in a horse’s diet
- Helping horse owners provide their horses with the right nutrient requirements in a safe manner, while minimizing the preparation workload
We cover A LOT in this episode - from breaking down the main function of the horse’s digestive system, to what is happening in the body of a horse who is sensitive to carbohydrates to discussing a fiber-based, grain-free, molasses-free solution for these types of horses who need extra calories due to a higher activity level or for those who struggle to keep weight on.

On this episode, co-hosts Dr. Tania Cubitt and Katy Starr and guest Dr. Michelle DeBoer discuss the hotly debated topic of whether or not horses actually need blankets in the winter, based on scientific research, including:
- Changes in hair coat length and diameter in blanketed and non-blanketed horses
- How body weight, body condition score and dry matter intake are impacted in blanketed horses
- The next scientific research project in the works to evaluate whether horses should be blanketed or not
Can horses actually TELL us if they want a blanket or not? Dr. DeBoer also shares the results from a fascinating research study answering this question.
This is only part one of our interview! In Episode 72, the second part of this conversation, releasing Tuesday, December 5, Dr. DeBoer discusses the physiological processes that keep horses warm and if deciding to blanket, the right way to do it to keep horses at a healthy body condition and safe through the winter.

Co-host Katy Starr and guest expert Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD, MS, PAS, discuss current research that was presented at the 2023 Equine Science Society Symposium held in Grapevine, Texas.
They discussed what the Equine Science Society is and the value it offers to the horse industry and horse owners. Some of the research highlighted in this episode involves potential livestock models to study bone and joint health in growing horses, hay nets and slow feeders and the impact on dental health, body condition score, weight and behavior, exercise intensity as it influences gastric ulcers in horses, algae as a source of DHA and EPA (which are important in the metabolism of omega 3 fatty acids) for anti-inflammatory effects on joints and joint healing, looking for fiber markers in forage that can predict digestibility of forage, equine gut microbiome including specific microbes and what they do from an individual standpoint and how they function as a community for certain activities, standardizing credentials for equine nutritionists, and so many other topics!

Dr. Tania Cubitt and Katy Starr interview Penn State Equine Extension Educator, Laura Kenny about how to know if your pasture is adequate, if improvements need to be made, or if it’s a total loss that needs to start over through pasture evaluation techniques.
Laura also shares some tips on how to get the most out of a pasture to benefit the horse and the environment. Laura and Dr. Cubitt talk about why horse owners should determine their goals with their horses before reseeding or improving pastures, and finding a good balance between what is good for the pasture and soil but what is also needed for specific horses, particularly ones struggling with metabolic disorders.
They also discuss foxtail, including what it is, how to identify it and differentiate it from timothy grass, and how to get rid of it.

From newborn to one year of age, young horses are known as foals. This first year of life is instrumental in determining how a horse’s future will play out, and poor nutrition can be devastating in a number of different ways.
During this episode, Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD. equine nutrition specialist, joins us for a discussion about some of the most important nutritional elements of a horse’s diet. From protein to zinc, to the “big two” nutrients (i.e. calcium and phosphorus),
Dr. Duren explains the importance of each and the issues that can arise if a foal receives more or less than the optimal amount. You will also learn about the digestive system of foals, when foals should be started on solids, and how the diet of a pregnant mare impacts the fetus.
Key Points from This Episode:
- The definition of a foal
- Where you can access a comprehensive list of nutrients for horses
- Nutrients that are critical for foal growth
- Symptoms of nutrient deficiency in foals
- The dangers of overfeeding a foal
- How to support a foal whose mother is not producing enough milk
- The age at which foals should start consuming hay and concentrates
- Problems that arise due to a lack of protein
- Why calcium and phosphorus are known as the “big two”
- The importance of getting the calcium-phosphorus ratio right
- How zinc impacts foal growth
- The effects of inadequate levels of copper in a foal’s diet
- What a foal’s digestive system looks like
- How the diet of a pregnant mare will affect the foal after birth
- The growth stages that a foal goes through during the first year of life
- How your goals for the foal should determine their nutrition management plan
- The benefits of a smooth growth curve
- How to minimize weight issues when a foal is weaned off his mother’s milk
- Advice on what to feed a growing foal
- Some of the most common developmental orthopedic diseases

Why are heritage breeds endangered? 🤔
The Livestock Conservancy states that with modern agriculture favoring a few specialized breeds, traditional breeds have fallen out of favor. Small family farms where these breeds once thrived are disappearing at an alarming rate - and with them historic breeds are disappearing as well.
Here is a list of species and breeds on their Conservation Priority list - https://livestockconservancy.org/heritage-breeds/conservation-priority-list/

Percentage of values:
- 24% of 1 pound is 3.84 ounces
- 12% of 2 pounds is 3.84 ounces
- 6% of 4 pounds is 3.84 ounces
- 3% of 8 pounds is 3.84 ounces
"Percentages mean nothing, zip, zero, nothing, unless you're applying them to a value. I could tell you 100%, 100% of what? A grain of rice? Well that's nothing versus 1%, 1% of what, jumbo jet? That's a lot." - Dr. Tania Cubitt
"A by-product of fiber digestion in the hindgut, is heat. The best way to keep your horse warm in the wintertime, is to feed it plenty of fiber." - Dr. Tania Cubitt
