Regional communities looking for ways to diversify income and employment under climate change often turn to tourism. Recently, the Australian Tourism Commission created a data hub to help. It shows the value of Australian tourism by region; and the scale of incomes and number of people in the industry to be staggering.

The Cosmos Country podcast speaks with two people involved in tourism about how events can contribute to a diversified economy. Archaeologist Dr James Hunter is curator of Naval Heritage and Archaeology at the Australian National Maritime Museum. He recently highlighted the wreck called The South Australia, just offshore in Victor Harbour. Despite its size and importance to the history of South Australia, the wreck was only discovered less than a decade ago. Hunter is also exploring the southern SA coast in search of shipwrecks offshore of Robe.

And Carolyn Grant is Director of Engagement at the Ocean Lovers Festival in Sydney, a blend of ideas, arts and music.

At the beginning of 2023, scientists made a surprise finding.

The pygmy right whale, which is the smallest of the baleen whales, didn’t move far from waters in the Southern Ocean. It’s surprising because long-distance migration is a behaviour practised by most other baleen whales.

Knowledge of this enigmatic species, which is a filter-feeder using baleen to sift tasty but tiny marine life from seawater, is slowly, but surely, on the rise.

But is this baleen like having a set of teeth? Or is it something altogether separate? Do whales even have teeth to chow down on prey that is so small?

Kathleen Folbigg has served 20 years of a 30-year sentence for killing her four children. She had exhausted all her avenues for appeal. Only after petitioning from grassroots supporters and legal representatives on the basis of new forensic pathology assessments did the New South Wales’ Governor open an inquiry into her convictions.

That was back in 2019, and despite those new forensic assessments being heard, judicial officer Reginald Blanch was not convinced there was a reasonable doubt cast by that and other evidence.

During the course of that inquiry, a rare gene mutation possessed by the Folbigg children was identified by two teams of researchers. One of those teams pursued research into that gene and concluded it would potentially explain the cause of their deaths. That led to New South Wales Attorney-General Mark Speakman opening a second inquiry into Folbigg’s convictions, which has finished hearing evidence from the geneticists, plus cardiologists, forensic pathologists, paediatricians, and psychology experts.

Quite a lot of science! But science that would not have been heard if not for the state of New South Wales enacting the rare provisions of a Governor’s appeal.

So, what can be done to make sure new science that’s potentially relevant to a case is heard when conventional means of appeal is exhausted.

The Australian Academy of Science was granted leave by the commission to appear as an independent scientific advisor to the inquiry. Today Cosmos journalist Matthew Agius talks to its chief executive is Anna Maria Arabia.

Australia is facing its greatest ever engineering skills shortage, according to Engineers Australia.

The clean energy transition, major infrastructure projects and emerging sectors like space are increasing demand for engineering skills. Some 50,000 to 100,000 engineers are needed by 2030, just as fewer students, particularly girls, are choosing to enter the profession.

Ok it may sound nutty, but could baking, and engineering contestants on shows like Bake Off and Baking Impossible, be key ingredients in helping solve the workforce crisis by improving awareness and perceptions of engineering, and broadening engagement with STEM.

If we can predict the behaviour of individual molecules, we can do extraordinary things with them. We can desalinate water to almost perfect purity, fine tune batteries to perform as well as possible – and that’s just the beginning.

But it’s really difficult to simulate molecules to enable that prediction. A nearly-invisible microlitre drop of water has 10 billion billion molecules in it, all moving and changing at the speed of femtoseconds.

Which is why researchers are using supercomputers to model how molecules move and behave.

Big dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex have been extinct for 66 million years, but it’s still fun to think about how they might interact with humans.

So, which dinosaur would make a good pet? Honestly, there are many decent options, but how can you look past the king, T. rex?

Cosmos journalist Evrim Yazgin recently spoke to world-famous palaeontologist Jack Horner – the inspiration behind Dr Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic film Jurassic Park. As a researcher from the University of Montana, Horner has spent a lot of time studying some of North America’s most famous dinosaurs like T. rex.

Horner says that certain biases in how we imagine dinosaurs lived and behaved aren’t quite up to date when it comes to the science. Rex, for example, probably wasn’t as much a hunter as we might like to believe.

In mid-January this year, a Titan Arum (or corpse flower), nearly 10 years old, showed off its first ever bloom at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens.

The foul-smelling corpse flower only blooms for a couple of days every few years, so it's a cool thing to see.

But this corpse flower is particularly exciting because it’s the first “second generation” corpse flower at the Gardens to do it.

Cosmos journalist Ellen Phiddian visited the corpse flower while it was blooming, and I chatted to Matt Coulter, Botanic Garden and State Herbarium curator, about it.

With brownish feathers, distinctive fine white streaks, and a long cocked tail, the western grasswren (Amytornis textilis) is a charming but elusive native Australian songbird.

If you are lucky enough to spot one, you might find it darting between shrubs as it forages along the ground on Dirk Hartog Island in Western Australia – thanks to the first successful grasswren translocation effort last month.

It was to re-establish the population after the introduction of sheep, goats, and feral cats caused the birds, and 12 other species, to become extinct on the island.

At the time many were working on ridding the atmosphere of chlorofluorocarbons, closing the hole over the Antarctic. Many were sceptical of claims that carbon dioxide was an existential threat.

The risk of Hendra virus being passed from bats to horses – increasing the risk to humans – has escalated in Australia in recent decades.

When viruses spillover from animals to humans there can be serious consequences. SARS Cov-1, SARS Cov-2 (which causes COVID19) and Hendra viruses have all been linked to this kind of event.

A team of researchers, led by conservation biologist Dr Peggy Eby, from the University of New South Wales, and wildlife disease ecologist Dr Alison Peel from Griffith University, analysed 25 years of data on land use change, bat behaviour and Hendra virus spillover events in Australia. Their research is published in Nature.

Cyber security experts have called for online safety and security fundamentals to be taught from early primary school, after a review of the national curriculum revealed key skills gaps.

A report led by Dr Nicola Johnson for the Cyber Security Cooperative Research Centre, has mapped the cyber safety content in the new Australian Curriculum against skills recommended by the Centre, for individuals and families to protect against common cyber security threats.

The Adélies gave us the phrase “penguin suit” and are found on almost the entire coastline in the white continent. But recent research has identified a problem with massive reduction in the numbers of breeding Adélie Penguins in some places in Antarctica. In some places their population is expanding, in some places it’s contracting, and in one or two places, numbers are alarming.

Australian Antarctic Division seabird ecologists, Dr Louise Emmerson and Dr Colin Southwell have been monitoring Adélie penguins for two decades, and spoke to Cosmos Digital News Editor Ian Mannix about their recent research.

Every year, the European Academy of Science awards the Blaise Pascal medal to outstanding scientists. This year, Distinguished Professor Susan Scott has become the first Australian to receive the medal, “in recognition for her contributions to the advances of physics”.

According to the Academy, “Distinguished Professor Susan Scott is an internationally recognised mathematical physicist who has made ground-breaking discoveries in general relativity, cosmology and gravitational wave science spanning more than three decades.

“She played a leading role in Australia’s participation in the first detection of gravitational waves in 2015, and the development of the field of gravitational wave science in Australia following on from that discovery.”

A recent study has shown that up to 20% of floodwater on the east coast of Australia can be absorbed by aquifers, eventually getting into a 'groundwater superhighway' that stretches from Queensland to Sydney Harbour. What does this mean for the future of flooding and water security? To get some answers Cosmos journalist Ellen Phiddian talks to Dr Ben Mather, a Computational Geophysicist, at the University of Sydney. Today, we are looking at the sex and gender data gaps in medicine, how they can result in worse outcomes for everyone, what we still don't know, and how we can address the issue. Our expert in these matters is Professor Zoe Wainer, Deputy Secretary of Public Health in the Victorian Department of Health. She has a clinical background in cardiothoracic surgery and surgical oncology as well as public health and health administration, and her PhD was on sex differences in outcomes for people with lung cancer. She talks to Cosmos science journalist Ellen Phiddian.

Wainer (and colleagues) published a 2020 article on addressing sex and gender analysis in The Medical Journal of Australia. That article can be read here.

Today, Cosmos journalist Matilda Handsley-Davis talks to Luke Williams. Luke is a proud descendant of the Gumbaynggirr people of northern NSW. He is currently completing his PhD project at RMIT University, and this project involves assessing the dietary safety of a range of native Australian foods, including traditional Aboriginal foods. He is also exploring how food regulatory frameworks can better accommodate the traditional knowledge held by First Nations people into the overall risk assessment of traditional food products that are being developed for commercial markets.

As part of his PhD research, Luke is actively bringing together the research sector and the national food regulatory body, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) with a range of First Nations stakeholders. The ultimate goal of Luke’s research is to facilitate First Nations food sovereignty through an Indigenous-led native foods industry.

While Moderna has announced it will be making mRNA vaccines on Australian shores by 2024, there are places that could already be doing parts of the process.

One such facility is based in Adelaide, and run by BioCina. BioCina has the technology and regulatory approvals to do microbial cell culture: the first step of the mRNA production process, and is currently using the technology to make other pharmaceutical products.

Who’s afraid of cobras? Not gorillas and chimps! Recent research has shown that an ancient ancestor of chimps, gorillas and humans evolved strong resistance to venom – specifically, to neurotoxins in snake venom – and passed it on to us. Today, Cosmos journalist Dr Deborah Devis speaks to the study’s lead author, Associate Professor Bryan Fry from the University of Queensland (AKA Venom Doc), about how this was part of an ongoing evolutionary arms race between African apes and deadly venomous snakes and why he’s so interested in venom.

Today Royal Institution of Australia Editor-in-Chief Ian Connellan talks to astrophysicist Professor Alan Duffy. Alan has just stepped down as the Royal Institution of Australia's lead scientist after four years in the role. He is simply too busy these days to fit everything in, especially since his appointment earlier this year as director of the space technology and industry Institute at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. To say it's been great to have Alan, and that the Royal Institution will miss him, is the understatement of the decade. He's a clever, amiable, and endlessly curious man. And he's also got an interesting backstory for someone who's ended up as one of Australia's best-known scientists.

With half of the world’s population now living in cities, a number that is projected to reach two thirds in the coming decades, people are becoming increasingly disconnected from their food both geographically and conceptually. Food travels greater distances, leading to increased waste and supply chain vulnerability.  

History tells us that during times of stress people turn to urban agriculture. Therefore, it is no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic has seen a resurgence of urban agriculture for its contributions towards food security, health and wellbeing. Moreover, urban agriculture has been identified as a key strategy for adapting to climate change. Recent analysis identified it as a $4 billion growth opportunity for Australia.   

So is urban agriculture just a nice idea, or a plausible reality?  

Today, Cosmos journalist Dr Deborah Devis talks to three experts from the University of Adelaide: Isobel Hume, a PhD Candidate, Dr Matthias Salomon, an Urban Soil Health researcher, and Tim Cavagnaro, a professor in Soil Ecology in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine, to get some insights.

The much-anticipated 26th UN Conference of the Parties – COP26 – is over, and the response to its agreement is mixed. Some say the path to net zero is inexorable; others feel that much remains to be agreed. In Australia, a dominant theme is that private enterprise and state governments are taking the lead on the path to net zero in the absence of a clear national commitment. There are other notable ‘other than government’ initiatives at international level. What position will Australia and the wider world be in at the end of the decade?

Today, we have two guests to discuss the aftermath of COP26. John O’Brien is Partner, Energy Transition & Decarbonisation, at Deloitte Australia. He works with clients to translate their decarbonisation/energy transition ambitions into practical business plans. John attended COP26 in Glasgow, this year and his latest book, Stories from 2030 has just been published. Dr Linden Ashcroft is a climate scientist, academic and science communicator. She works at the University of Melbourne, where she lectures in climate science and her research focuses on Australia’s past climates. Ashcroft is a regular on broadcast media and was a Science and Technology Australia 2019–20 Superstar of STEM. Distinguished Professor Chennupati Jagadish, based at ANU, has been named as the next president of the Australian Academy of Science. Jagadish is a world-renowned physicist and nanotechnology pioneer; he’s the first Australian of Indian heritage to lead the country’s premier science organisation. He was born in humble circumstances in Andhra Pradesh, south-eastern India. He moved to Australia with his family in 1990 to accept a position at ANU. Soil carbon sequestration seems like a win for everyone: it improves soil quality, removes CO2 from the atmosphere, and provides an additional source of income for farmers via carbon credits. It forms a major part of the federal government’s plan to reduce emissions to net zero by 2050, with one official estimate suggesting that up to a fifth of our current yearly emissions could be negated with soil carbon. Is it really possible to put such a huge chunk of our emissions in the soil – and if so, how can we do it? What’s holding soil carbon farming back?

Louise Kiely is the Director of Carbon Farmers of Australia, and Dr Michael Crawford is CEO at the Cooperative Research Centre for High Performance Soils. What do your genes say about your risk of disease? We want to know what types of diseases we, and our children, are susceptible to so we can to our best to mitigate them. When we hear about our own risk of genetic disease, it can be frightening, but it may not mean what it seems.

In reality, genetic disease is highly complex, especially when multiple genes could contribute to any given trait. So, how do we collect this information and what does it mean?

Australian palaeontologist Professor John Long has spent a lifetime expanding what we know about ancient animals, especially fish from the Devonian age, about 400 million years ago. John grew up in Victoria and was educated at Monash University. His fossil expeditions have taken him throughout Australia and to places as diverse as Vietnam, Iran and Antarctica. His ground-breaking discoveries include contributing to our understanding of how reproduction evolved, and the reasons behind global mass extinctions. Science outreach is an important part of John’s work and he’s written more than 20 popular science books. Recently the tide of authorship turned the other way, and John became the subject of a new book in the Aussie STEM stars series. We asked the book’s author, Dr Danielle Clode, who’s also a Cosmos contributor, to talk to John about his life and work.

Remote and wild, Antarctica is a spectacular place that most people on Earth won't ever get to. But it's a frontier for scientific research – and something we are very passionate about as The Royal Institution of Australian is the Australian Antarctic Division’s Education partner. Today Cosmos journalist Lauren Fuge speaks to Professor Nicole Webster, who took up the role as the chief scientist of the Australian Antarctic Division this year. Webster completed her PhD at James Cook University in Queensland, investigating the microbial ecology of a Great Barrier Reef sponge, before transitioning into Antarctic science, including studying microbial communities as indicators for human-induced stress in the Antarctic marine environment. In this discussion we learn about what kind of research is undertaken on this frozen continent, from the smallest krill to the largest ice sheets, and what it might teach us about our future on this planet.

Professor Fred Watson AM has been a fixture of Australian astronomy for decades, perhaps best known for his work promoting and explaining science and astronomy on television, radio and through publications.

In addition to a long career at the Australian Astronomical Observatory and now as astronomer-at-large for the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, he is the author of several popular books, a regular radio presenter, and keen musician.

Today we present the Nature for Everyone session from the Nature Festival held in Adelaide between the 25th of September and the 4th of October this year. Nature does indeed have something for everyone but is it within everyone’s reach? In this panel discussion we look at the diverse value of nature, some of the barriers South Australians experience in accessing it, and showcase some of the programs that are working to make it easier for everyone to connect. Our guests today are Ben Trewren, Youth, Inc. Experiential Learning Manager, Youth, Inc. is an Adelaide-based learning alternative, designed specifically for young people aged 17-24 who are looking for something a bit different; Yvie Eglinton, Dept of Environment and Water’s National Parks Access Coordinator; Tricia Curtis, who looks after Trees For Life’s Regenerate and Stepping Stone Programs; and Harry Spurrier from Neurohero Foundation, an organisation that aims to improve the lives of teenagers with debilitating neurodegenerative disorders through virtual reality video games and at-home sustainable agriculture. The discussion is hosted by Christy Spiers, Network Facilitator for the SA Urban Food Network, and Adaptive Communities Coordinator for Green Adelaide.

In a few days the Aussie Backyard Bird Count begins. It’s an annual activity for all ages and involves observing and counting the birds that live near you – whether that’s in a garden, the local park, or even a town centre. By capturing the participants observations within a 20-minute period, BirdLife Australia develops an understanding of local birds, and you get to know the local wildlife better!

To answer all the questions, Royal Institution Of Australia Editor-in-Chief Ian Connellan talks Sean Dooley, the National Public Affairs Manager for Birdlife Australia, and a noted author. His first book was 2005's The Big Twitch, the story of his attempt to break the Australian record for the number of birds seen in Australia in a single year.

In 2022, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) Telescope in the Western Australian outback will embark on a massive project to map the southern skies in radio waves. This survey, the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU), will help us understand how the first stars and galaxies formed, and how they evolved into what we see today. The project involves over 400 researchers from around the world, and it’s being led by Australian astronomers. Cosmos journalist Lauren Fuge spoke to Dr Michael Cowley, an astrophysicist from the Queensland University of Technology, who leads the Red Shift working group, to get the lowdown on this exciting project.

South Australian-based company Micro-X has recently won $8 million in funding to further develop their small, portable CT scanner, which they aim to fit on an ambulance or in a plane. It’s a device that can mean the difference between life and death in patients having a stroke. The technology they use to enable a CT scanner to be produced that weighs just 30kg, instead of the normal three-quarters of a tonne, can be applied across many forms of x-ray from medical to airport security to military bomb squads, as managing director Peter Rowland explains in today’s interview hosted by Ellen Phiddian.

Today we have an incredibly special podcast for you. We speak to two amazing women about the effect Taliban rule will have on education, especially for women and girls, in Afghanistan.

Farkhondeh Akbari, originally from Daikundi province in central Afghanistan. Akbari was born in 1991 in Afghanistan and migrated with her family to Australia when she was 12 years old. She has visited friends and relatives in Afghanistan throughout her life, most recently in 2019. She joins us today from Canberra, where she’s completing a PhD in diplomacy and peace settlements at the ANU.

Pashtana Durrani is a teacher, and founder and executive director of LEARN, an Afghani not-for-profit whose main focus is providing quality education to all children, especially girls, in Afghanistan. Pashtana has remained in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power.

Ian Connellan, The Royal Institution of Australia’s Editor-in-Chief, conducts the interviews, and Cosmos journalist Lauren Fuge narrates this amazing story.

Back in the 1940s, South Australian geologist Reg Sprigg first discovered Ediacaran fossils on the north end of Nilpena Station, to the west of the Flinders Ranges, redefining the Earth’s history by adding in a whole new period.

The Department for Environment and Water in South Australia has recently teamed up with several non-profit organisations to purchase a chunk of Nilpena Station and turn it into the Nilpena Ediacaran National Park. They’re currently building trails, planning tours to the fossil site, and creating a visitor’s centre which will have an audiovisual experience bringing a fossil bed to life.

Today our expert panel is going to discuss a fairly simple proposition: whether science has played a role in the decline of truth. ‘Truth decay’ is a subject that’s been growing in visibility; the shift away from an accepted and agreed set of facts and data has been eroding trust in public institutions for many years. The trend may have been more profound in the United States (culminating as it did in the election of President Donald J. Trump), but Australia hasn’t been immune. The challenges presented over many years by climate change and more recently by COVID-19 have placed science firmly at the centre of debate about the veracity of information, and the qualifications of those dispensing it. Has science stood apart from the decline of truth, or has it played a role in widening the gap between fact and fantasy?

Professor Caroline McMillen has been Chief Scientist of South Australia since 2018. She is a medical researcher, the chair or a member of multiple research and advisory boards, and she’s held academic leadership positions at multiple universities across Australia, including seven years as Vice Chancellor of the University of Newcastle; The Hon Michael Kirby served as a Justice of the High Court of Australia between 1996 and 2009, and was Acting Chief Justice on two occasions during the period. He’s had an extraordinarily long and distinguished judicial career – upon retirement from the High Court he was the country’s longest-serving judge – and he’s served on the governing bodies of universities and national and international bodies including the World Health Organisation; and Associate Professor Antony Eagle, a philosopher based at the University of Adelaide. His research has mainly been in ‘theoretical’ philosophy: metaphysics, epistemology and philosophy of science, philosophy of logic and language, philosophy of probability, and philosophy of physics. He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne and did his higher degrees at Princeton University in the USA.

As we build a clean energy future, solar energy research is diversifying. This is one of the focuses of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Exciton Science, a collaboration between Australian unis and industry that explores how light interacts with advanced materials. In particular, they study Excitons, an excited state of matter that is crucial to semiconductors, which are used in light-based applications from lasers to solar cells. One group within the ARC is working on building better solar panels. Right now, typical silicon solar cells only capture about 30% of the energy that lands on them. So part of this group's research is trying to identify cheaper and more efficient materials to make these cells. Today we talk to Carl Belle, the lead researcher with a team at RMIT University and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science in Melbourne. After completing a PhD on gel-ada baboons in Ethiopia, Chadden worked with National Geographic and Discovery Channel, filming everything from tribal ceremonies in Africa to snow leopards in Pakistan. On the BBC series “Planet Earth” he became known as ‘the guy covered in bat poop’, and whilst filming arctic wolves for “Frozen Planet” learnt that minus 40C was cold enough to freeze his eyes shut. His credits include Producer/Director on “Planet Earth 2” and “Seven Worlds-One Planet”. Co-Series Producer of BBC’s “Wild Arabia” and National Geographic’s “Cliffhangers”. Principal Director of the “Frozen Planet” series. Collectively, the series he has worked on have won 12 Emmys and 8 Baftas. Currently, the diagnosis and treatment of vertigo is done primarily by specialists who represent only 1% of the doctors in Australia. Her project, in collaboration with clinicians, data scientists and statisticians, will use machine learning techniques to develop a “virtual expert” diagnostic tool to assist the diagnosis of vertigo in the hospital emergency room, general practice, and in outpatient clinics. If they can’t be used second-hand, is it possible to recycle old clothes? What about recycling other fabrics and textiles? An Australian company, BlockTexx, has recently received funding to build a textile recovery facility in Queensland. Using technology developed by Queensland University of Technology researchers, the plant will take old textiles and turn them into raw materials that can be used by other industries.

One of the central problems with textiles is that they’re often a mix of completely different chemicals – such as cotton and polyester. This makes them very difficult to turn into new, high-quality products. The separation-of-fibre technology (S.O.F.T.) process developed by QUT, however, separates the polyester and cotton in textiles completely, allowing them to be used for other purposes.

Cosmos spoke to Robert Speight, a professor at QUT, and Adrian Jones, a co-founder of BlockTexx, about the technology and its environmental implications.

Artificial intelligence technology brings the promise of improvements in many areas of life, but it’s not without problems. Near the top of the list of issues are ways in which it may embed prejudice, for instance through facial recognition, and surveillance. If AI’s to fulfil its potential, it needs to be safe, fair and reliable.

About three years ago, the Australian Human Rights Commission began compiling a report into the impacts of AI; the Human Rights and Technology Final Report was presented to the federal Attorney General in March, and tabled in parliament in early June.

Remote and wild, Antarctica was once solely the domain of hardcore explorers. As the continent becomes more accessible, science and tourism are expanding – but does this come with an environmental cost? Should access to these fragile ecosystems be regulated, and who gets to decide?

Professor Steven L Chown FAA FRSsaf is Director of Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future, an Australian Research Council Special Research Initiative and Professor at Monash University. His Antarctic research covers many aspects of biodiversity variation and its conservation. Owing to his interest in the science-policy interface, for many years he represented the international Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), of which he was also President (2016-2021), at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings, providing scientific advice on a broad range of environmental and science policy matters.

Dr Jaimie Cleeland is an early career scientist working on Southern Ocean fisheries at the Australian Antarctic Division. Her research directly contributes to the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Living Marine Resources, where she represents Australia as an independent scientific delegate. Providing advice on the impact fishing has on bycatch species such as seabirds and deep-water skates and sharks, and ways that we can better manage fisheries around Antarctica to conserve non-target species.

Greg Mortimer OAM is best known as a mountaineer; he was one of the first two Australians to climb Mt Everest (1984) and the first Australian to climb Antarctica’s highest peak, Vinson Massif, in 1988. He later co-founded adventure cruise company Aurora Expeditions and has led over 80 expeditions to Antarctica. He trained as a geochemist and geologist has also previously worked for the New Zealand Antarctic Division.

Warwick Ragg was raised on a farm in the NSW Southern Highlands and has almost 30 years experience in rural and regional advocacy. Prior to joining NFF Warwick had been working in the Commonwealth Government in stakeholder engagement roles and had previously spent a decade with NSW Farmers’ Association and a further decade as chief executive of Australian Forest Growers.

Dr Erin O’Donnell is a water law and policy specialist. She has worked in water management since 2002, focusing on water markets, environmental flows, and water governance. Erin is recognized internationally for her research into the groundbreaking new field of legal rights for rivers, and the challenges and opportunities these new rights create for protecting the multiple social, cultural and natural values of rivers. In 2018, Erin was appointed to the inaugural Birrarung Council, the voice of the Yarra River.

Dr Cathy Foley is a physicist and commenced her term as Australia’s ninth chief scientist in January 2021. Before that she had a long and distinguished career at CSIRO, where she was appointed chief scientist in August 2018 – only the second woman in that role.

Over the course of her career, she has made significant contributions to the understanding of semiconductors and high-temperature superconductors. Her work led to the development of field-deployable superconducting devices that locate valuable mineral deposits by detecting minute magnetic fields (ten million times weaker than the Earth’s field).

Dr Vikram Sharma is a quantum physicist and the founder and CEO of Canberra-based QuintessenceLabs, which is a world leader in the quantum cybersecurity industry. Vikram is a dual MSc holder – in computer science (from ANU), and management (from Stanford University, California). His doctorate in quantum physics was also awarded by ANU.

Dr Johan Verjans is a cardiologist who combines clinical and research work. He’s deputy director, Medical Machine Learning, at the Australian Institute for Machine Learning; a senior lecturer at the University of Adelaide attached to South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute; an associate investigator at Adelaide Uni’s Centre for Nanoscale Biophotonics; and a consultant cardiologist at Royal Adelaide Hospital.

Australian-born Professor Peter Goadsby is the NIHR-Wellcome Trust King’s Clinical Research Facility at King’s College London in the United Kingdom and is Professor of Neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA. He is also Honorary Consultant Neurologist at King’s College Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond St, London. Professor Goadsby is one of four neuroscientists who have won this year’s prestigious international Brain Prize. The group has been recognised for discovering a key mechanism that causes migraines.
