In today's episode, we are going to address a topic that I don't feel is addressed very much but affects many families in the United States and around the world.

You may have this need in your family, as well.

What we're talking about today is special needs planning. If you have someone in your life, whether that might be a relative close to you or a child of your own that has special needs, today's episode is something for you to consider.

We'll be talking about what to do from an investment standpoint in income planning, tax planning, and general financial planning.

As always, these are concepts and educational tools, and resources for you to begin the conversation. Now, if you know anyone who can benefit from this episode, please share, we would love for our podcast audience to continue to listen and grow from the education.

Today we're talking about why everything cost so much more right now.

And how does one little word have so much impact on the financial decisions that we might make?

And how does this impact us from varying points in our lives?

Well, if you've gone to the grocery store, and you've seen an increase in your grocery bill, or you're trying to buy a house right now, and you're in constant battles with individuals who are showing up with offers better than yours, I get it.

I understand how all of those things play a part in how we make financial decisions, and what do all of these things really mean for us now, and in the future?

Let's talk about what inflation actually is. We'll start there on this edition of the Thrive For[e]ward podcast.

In today's episode, we are going to talk about being Sasha Fierce with your wealth! Maybe it's Sasha Fierce, aka Beyonce. Maybe it's Madonna. Maybe it's Gwyneth Paltrow. Maybe it's Michelle Obama, or maybe it's Oprah.

You insert the woman who is the icon that you look up to. A woman who is a rebel without a cause in her own way, pushing through those glass ceilings and getting to the place that she wants to be. But she's also financially savvy and aware, producing that responsible level of wealth that allows for her family to be cared for, the community to be invested in, and that next generation of wealth to multiply.

I'm talking about fierce female investors.

What does it take for you to be in that same space?

Well tune in to today's episode, and if you know another amazing female that should be listening to this podcast, share it with your friends. We would love to have you do that on your social media, as well as through email, text, hey, and even a carrier pigeon. Shout it from the rooftops! Women with financial freedom is the future of our total unrelenting success.

Today we are talking about what you should be considering around your wealth in your 60s and beyond. And this is a fun spot for me because I have spent much of my career guiding individuals through transformations into this amazing time of their life.

Today we are going to talk about the stress of replacing that steady income you were making, how to handle medical insurance, finding your purpose after leaving your job, deciding if it's okay to retire earlier than expected, and how to live with your partner in peace and harmony. After all, you two will be spending a lot of time together!

We are continuing our conversation through the decades. And this week, we are focused on what you should be doing in your 40s and 50s.

There are things that you might be experiencing in your 40s and 50s that have caused you to hit a pause. If that's the case, then listen to our last episode. Because you don't have to be in your 20's and 30's to start your wealth journey.

But, otherwise, in your 40's and 50's, you are probably well established in life, and I love this pre-retirement conversation.

Today's episode will cover your biggest expense in your 40's, starting your career over if you stayed home to watch the kids, and why fear can be retirement's biggest enemy.

In today's episode of the podcast, we are going to specifically be breaking down the topics that you should be thinking about from a financial perspective, in your 20s, and your 30s. These are critical timeframes in our financial wellness to build a solid foundation.

Now, many individuals will tell you in their 40s, and beyond that, they wish that they would have done some of these things in their 20s and their 30s.

Money touches every aspect of our lives. And there are very specific things based on where we are in our life cycle that we should be touching on.

So while we're not giving you advice in this podcast, we are asking you to understand these topics a little bit further, ask questions, and form a team, your personal board of directors in your 20s and 30s.

This is the perfect time to establish those individuals.

And we'll talk more about who those people are in this week's episode!

Have you ever heard of the phrase "Keeping Up with the Joneses?"

Is this something you, or someone you know, might be trying to do?

It's really hard with all of the images in magazines at the checkout lanes, or ads we're served when scrolling through social media. Or even television shows we watch about redesigning our homes and making them even bigger and better than they already are.

There are so many ways this can affect us in our day-to-day lives.

Are we using the people we look up to as an inspiration for success or are we just trying to look and live their lifestyle at an expense we can't afford?

This is what we're going to talk about today because it's an important topic.

I'm also going to give you some tips on how to avoid those temptations.

So listen and please share this episode with friends.

On today's episode, I am going to share a personal experience that I'm living through right now. Caregiving and being part of what we call the "sandwich generation." I'm not talking about actual sandwiches, but the element of feeling like you're in a sandwich. For instance, I am a mother, a daughter, and a granddaughter. Now the two generations on either side of me need my care, and so I'm going to walk you through some personal experiences caregiving not only for my daughters, but my dad, my mom, and my grandmother. What are some things that you should start considering in those conversations of transition, and care? This might not be something that you are currently dealing with, but I will tell you, friend, at some point in life, you will likely play the title of caregiver. So you'll want to tune in to this episode.

The last three weeks have been kind of tumultuous in the Foreman household. And kind of like the last two years, we have had our lovely girls home with us. And although times have been up and down in the household with lots of iPad time, lots of TV time and lots of online learning, we thought it would be fun as an element of learning, for the girls to join us on an episode of The Thrive For[e]ward podcast. I have heard from clients and just individuals ask how to start a conversation with their kids about money. What are the things that are important? And so I gave the microphone over to my kids today to ask me questions about my job, questions about money, and questions about what does money means to them? And what should they be doing with their money when it comes to buying, spending, saving, giving, and investing? What do all those things mean to a seven and eight-year-old? So if you have children and or grandchildren that you're looking to expand this conversation with, today's episode is a great one to tune into.

If you have a significant person in your life that you are romantically involved with, maybe it's your hubby, maybe it's your wife, maybe it's your partner, or maybe it's the person that you just adore and have spent your life with. But if something happened, you'll have that person's back financially. So how do you talk to them about money? It can be an incredibly uncomfortable conversation for some individuals who are romantically involved to bring up the conversation around money. However, it's kind of important. And money, as I say often, touches many aspects of our lives, but especially our relationships, and especially those we are romantically involved with. According to a study, 22% of failed marriages say that money is the issue of why they are getting divorced. Money does touch every aspect of our lives. And if we don't talk about it, or we aren't on the same page, or even in the same chapter, or even in the same book, it can be hard to move forward together. So on today's podcast, maybe you sit down with your partner, play this in the car on a road trip, or even on a date night, and have a conversation around what we are going to be talking about today.

But on today's episode, we're going to actually talk about what you should be doing in 2022, to get yourself even more organized for next year.

We are talking today about something that some of us put off for a really long time, and that has to do with Uncle Sam... and taxes.

Look, I know it's not everybody's favorite topic, and I know that you're like, oh, Shannon, this is kind of a big snoozefest. Look, I love seeing all of your posts on social media gathering all of your receipts, and doing everything last minute, but honestly, it gives me anxiety. So I can only imagine what it's doing for you.

So this week we are talking about making tax season easy for you this year, and next week, we'll plan ahead for next year.

Today's Thrive For[e]ward Podcast is focusing on whether you should handle it all yourself. And by that, we mean your financial planning. Should you handle your investment management or hire somebody? What's involved? Well, I break it all down and also offer up some resources to help if you do want to go it alone.

I'm also going to pull back the curtain and ask you a few questions to dig deeper into whether or not you're ready to take on this responsibility. So if you've been having some conversations and debates in your household or with friends on whether or not to manage your portfolios yourself, or to invest in an advisor, I encourage you to listen to the rest of this episode. And of course, we always appreciate it if you share on social media or with your friends.

How should you prep for before you have that first meeting with your financial advisor?

And I don't mean preparing statements or things of that sort.

I'm talking about the interview process.

What are the things that you should be asking that person?

I have a little strategy that you can do for yourself to make the process easy.

Something most financial advisors are probably not going to talk to you about, but we are pulling back the curtain as we work towards your financial goals in 2022.

As we are rounding out the year, I thought there's no better way for us to continue our conversation around giving than by associating yourself with a great community.

Well, the women at TeamWomen are doing just that. And they are led by their fierce Executive Director Katie Berke.
We are so excited to have her on today's episode of The Thrive For[e]ward podcast, where we'll talk about how they meet women where they are, and young girls are inspired to move from the classroom to the boardroom.

I'm sure you will leave this episode having a little bit more of a warm heart.

Welcome to this week's episode of The Thrive For[e]ward podcast. We are actually bringing you back to our live broadcasts from October 30th.

It's a fun episode because yours truly is not the only host. I invite my dear friend Giselle Ugarte to interview me about why I am so passionate about live events, podcasting, and why it's so critical to our financial industry.

What does a healthy relationship with money look like?

Are there good days?

Are there bad days?

What does "dating your money" mean?
What are the questions you should be asking when searching for a partner in your financial picture?

How does wealth impact women?

And I have details to the kick off of Wealth Circles that we launch in January.

So my friends, stay tuned, share with a friend, and thank you for listening to this live recording of the Thrive For[e]ward Podcast.

On the last Thrive For[e]ward Podcast, we talked about gifting, as in giving a physical gift which comes with overspending.

In this episode, we're going to talk about giving a gift of monetary value and the smartest way to give to charities and give to families at the end of the year.

This is the time of year I get so many questions about giving from my clients, so if you, or someone you know, is in the thought process of wanting to give, whether it be a monetary gift to a family member, children, or grandchildren, what is the best avenue to give those gifts?

What limits do you have?

And then if you're going to give to a charity, what are your options?

What does that look like?

As always we love when you share our content so that more individuals can learn and feel empowered from a financial space.

The website mentioned in this episode:
CharityNavigator.org
Shows how much of your donation goes towards the charity's cause

We are rounding out our sustainable investment series by talking about a couple of key topics on how you can transition into a sustainable investment lifestyle.

How to own sustainability in your life.

We know that truly living sustainably isn't just about doing one thing, but it is about making a change in our overall lifestyle.

And by no means in today's episode, am I asking you to do every single thing that we talk about. Maybe just pick one thing.

So how do you do that in a giving strategy? How do you do that in a volunteering strategy?s And how do you do that when you make a simple trip to the grocery store?

I have some advice and free resources to help you decide if the businesses you frequent align with your values.

And, I also admit my weaknesses. I'm not perfect, and I'm not asking you to be, either. But we can all make a difference, and that's what we will talk about now.

We are continuing our series on sustainable investing. We have so far talked about proxy voting and impact bonds. And today we're going to talk a little bit about investing for the future.

What does that mean?

Well, that means we're welcoming one of my dear partners, Emily Lee from Impax Asset Managers. She is the Vice President of Business Development and a key partner that I utilize in my investment management when it comes to sustainability for my clients. Impax has been around for 50 years, so they're not new to this game, and neither is Emily. We're going to talk focusing on where we are right now and the growing popularity of sustainable investing, what impact women and future generations have on sustainable investing, and then what you, as the end investor, can really make an impact on. So I hope that you'll tune into today's episode and share this free educational resource, as well. Sharing doesn't cost you anything but it us to spread even more education and awareness.

I'm rounding out our series on caregiving and the Alzheimer's journey for September, and I thought there is no better way than to talk about some things that we can do in our own lives to stay healthy both physically and mentally. Now, I'll caveat this with that I am not a mental health professional or a doctor. So the things that I'm going to talk about are coming from just real-life experiences, either for myself or for clients that I have worked with. We're going to talk about mental health and physical health, emotional health, and our general well-being during today's episode, and specifically how those relate directly back to your caregiving experience.

Today we'll have a bit of an in-depth conversation around long term care, extended care, and care that you need beyond just hospital care, long term disability.

This type of care usually occurs more so at the end of our lives, and this is a hard conversation to have. Not everybody wants to talk about these things that are happening in our lives.

Add to that the overarching cost that it takes to be able to provide care which is not something that is covered in any of our health care plans.

Now, you may have skilled nursing home care and hospice care that is covered, but most of them are not going to cover long-term care.

And I'm going to specifically talk about it in terms of longer-term instances where we might need care when it comes to memory care.

In today's episode, we're specifically going to get into the nitty-gritty on what elements are available for you to plan around, and why it's so important for you to plan earlier rather than later.

I will start to break down the costs of care what you can do about it, and what types of solutions are out there for the rising costs of health care needed at the end of our lives.

I am excited to welcome to you a previous Thrive For[e]ward guest, and my dear friend, Karla Hult.

Karla by day is a news anchor and reporter for Kare 11 News, the NBC affiliate here in the Twin Cities. How Karla and I met, though, is not through her TV gig, but through our shared journey of being Alzheimer's daughters. Karla has been a huge support throughout my journey. And just recently, she has launched her own company called So Many Goodbyes, a company for families and caregivers that are sharing our journey. She'll talk about the services that they offer with caregivers, training them and talking to them about the importance of understanding and bringing together the emotions of family versus the critical job that they play in the lives of so many battling Alzheimer's and dementia. Then she has three tips for you to share with any caregiver, very easy, tactical things that can be done today to allow yourself to be the advocate or caregiver that you want to be without losing yourself throughout this long journey.

We just wrapped up a month of conversations around caregiving as our children go back to school, or in some cases, leave home for the first time. Now our caregiving conversation switches to our September theme around Alzheimer's.

I am a mother, and I am a caregiver to a father with Alzheimer's.

There's a lot that comes together in that intersectionality.

Oftentimes we experience life transitions or pauses in our life that isn't necessarily positive.
And in fact, it probably feels like a tornado is coming through us. But that's when we have to readjust and recognize our true priorities.

One of my guests from last month, Babs Plunkett, joins me today has an amazing story. Many of her family members have battled Alzheimer's and dementia. She's going to talk about the journey that comes with that, a journey that hit home for me because I started that same journey of really trying to find what my purpose was when my dad was diagnosed.

I didn't know that that's really what I was subconsciously doing.
There was just something that tugged at the heart inside me, and I started asking myself what it is I really want to be doing?

How do I want to live this life?

How do I want to show up for myself and for the people around me through all of this?

So if you're at the stage of life, someone caring for your children and caring for your parents, join us in this series, as we explore Alzheimer's and caregiving.

And that first story that we will share is the one of inspiration that comes from our previous podcast, guests Babs Plunkett.

When you think about money and your journey with money, what are the aspects that you learned growing up?

I find so often, even in the same households my clients have differing opinions or experiences.

Today I want to talk about financial behavior. Those habits that you picked up over the years, even stretching back to when we were children.

Some of these financial behaviors are good, some are...well, not so good. And there's a good chance you didn't even know you were learning this behavior. You just picked it up by example.

Today I'm going to outline 9 financial behaviors. I want you to identify with one of them, and then I want you to answer some important questions I have to ask you about the security of your future.

We are continuing with our back to school theme for the month of August as we round out the summer and enter into a new space, a new space that has been different. Education, emotions, and relationships have been affected by these transitions and changes.

On today's podcast, we have licensed marriage and family therapist, Ann Dillard.

Ann specializes in relationships with teens and their mothers. She, herself, had a relationship with her mom that was tumultuous. Trauma that she has overcome, and now uses that experience to help others.

Think about this, do you want to be your children's critic, or do you want to be there in your champion and cheerleader?

Personally, I want to be my daughter's champion, but I'm always looking to individuals like Ann to be able to provide guidance in how I can do that in a better way.

So if you know someone who is in a relationship with their teenage child and looking for a way to expand and make that relationship even better, this is a great episode for you to tune into or even share with your community.

We are talking about back to school. What does back to school mean? So do me a favor. We are halfway through 2021, and at the beginning of the year, we talked a lot about what do you want for your life in 2021. Rather than goal setting, we talked about your vision for your life.

What are your passions?

What are the things that keep you going?

How do you want your lifestyle to look today?

I welcome my dear friend, Jessica Horton, to talk about resetting some of that vision.
Are you doing the things that sets your soul on fire?

At the beginning of 2021, my friends, we had guests that started the conversation of life's priorities, and what we really want out of our lives. Not necessarily goals, but is the vision?

How do we measure progress?

Well, it's halfway through the year and I thought it's the perfect time to circle back on those visions.

Maybe you're feeling a little bit frustrated? Maybe there are some obstacles that have come your way? Maybe we aren't necessarily trusting ourselves with moving in the directions that we planned?

That being said, I have someone for you to listen to today

Who will literally light your soul on fire.

Her name is Mindy Henderson. Mindy has an amazing story about overcoming obstacles and not being in the one that everyone is clinging to and you feel left out. How do you move forward from those things? And how do you find the passion within that really lights your soul on fire and finds the direction to move you into a space where you are not only making impact in your life, but the lives around you.

Mindy is a motivational speaker. She is a podcaster and she is a wonderful woman who utilizes a wheelchair every single day of her life to get around.

So if you don't think that Mindy has seen some obstacles in her life, you got another thing coming. This woman is going to be sunshine in your life today.

Have you ever paused when listening to somebody's story and thought to yourself, "wow, I can really feel the emotion behind this story."

I try to provide you with stories that evoke emotion and provide learning experiences for yourself.

During this month of Pride, I wanted to feature voices of individuals who we're looking to be heard, understood and brought in unique experiences of their own.

And today on our podcast, we welcome mom, Alana Miller. She is also co-founder of Say Hello Threads.

Alana has two children. A thriving boy with special needs, and a teenager.

She is also a woman who once identified as straight.

So how do we experience Alana's journey? I ask you to sit in a place of listening, not listening to respond, but listening to hear Alana's story of her life, her childhood, becoming a mother and her own journey of coming out.

This week, we honor fathers, and something that has been a huge part of my life is my relationship with my dad.

Those of you who follow my journey closely on social media know that my relationship with my dad is really special and I love him. In fact, some people say I am his twin, just with longer hair and bright lipstick.

I know won't be here forever. And for some of you, your dad has passed already. And we know that death is inevitable. You see for my dad, we have very small, sometimes big goodbyes throughout his life.
My dad is battling early-onset dementia of the Alzheimer's strain. And it's hard. It's hard to see my dad, the man that I always looked up to who taught me so many things start to fade away. He's still in there, though. In fact, I'm convinced he'll never forget me.
I'm his only child. I'm his only daughter. I am his best friend and he is mine. Although I didn't get to have the same conversations with my dad that I always have, throughout this podcast, you're going to hear bits of a recent conversation I had with him.

My dad is creative, thoughtful, caring, and all of that comes out, in his words, on today's Thrive For[e]ward Podcast.

The difference between intent and impact. Have you ever had a conversation with somebody and it maybe went a little bit sideways? You had no intention of your words being, or landing in the space that hurt, but they had an impact, and maybe a lasting impact.

We are going to talk about that today as we continue our conversation with Hannah and Megs.

We're going to talk about the difference between the intent of our conversations and how they land with the people that are important to our lives or those that we are engaging with in conversation.

We're going to talk about how coming out can affect relationships with our parents and with other individuals in our lives, and how allies specifically can continue these conversations for the next generation.

How do we create a culture of true inclusivity? How do we make sure that we don't define something, but rather leave open space.

I'll share some stories with you about what we do in the Foreman household. And we're going to talk about identity shifts and how something as simple as your hair can cling to something in the past, but yet now transform into the future.

So I am looking forward to continueing this conversation with Hannah and Megs, and as always, if you find this episode to be impactful, we would love if you share the journey with someone else

On today's episode of Thrive For[e]ward, we welcome two amazing coaches and transformational individuals in the Twin Cities area, Hannah Strenger and Megs Pulvermacher (AKA Megs the Connector). Both of them have created a community for entrepreneurs. It is important to me that I become educated, that we all become educated, in being able to support individuals that might not have the same sexuality, the same race, the same gender, and the same belief systems as we might have because I truly believe when we start to listen to people's experiences, we lead with love, belief, and transformation.

And these are the topics that we weave into our conversation today with Hannah and Megs. Plus we have a good old time. They are fun, loving individuals who like to laugh like to kid around, but also are going to share some really vulnerable moments about their experiences in their coming out journey. And even within the last year, what some of them have struggled through within this community and why they created it.

The air might feel a little extra heavy right now, are you with me?
We've been living through several pandemics at least for a minimum of 14 months.

And sometimes that comes with our own personal transitions in our lives.

Not to mention what's happening in the environments that we experience around us.

I am honored to share space with the one and only Brad Chandler, who is a public speaker, business development, and integrator of cultures.

And why might we be talking today?

Well, Brad is incredibly inspirational to me. He has this calm effect about bringing on serious topics, like finding your purpose and living authentically.

And sometimes it just feels like we need somebody to know that we don't have it all together and we're still struggling, but how do we dig deep?

How do we ground our feet in?

How do we have that purpose?

Not only in our life, both personally and professionally, but also in our financial lives.

Brad and I talk a lot about how to weave in purpose. How to step into that space that allows us to truly live our lives the way we want to, not the way somebody else tells us.
We have to know that just because both Brad and I might be entrepreneurial spirits, that doesn't mean that has to be your path to action. What's important is that you find your purpose. I hope that you enjoy this episode with Brad Chandler.

In this episode of the motherhood series on the Thrive For[e]ward Podcast, I wanted to be able to honor those mamas who really love being able to achieve in the workplace and not necessarily running their own business, but working in an element of corporate America, whether it be for a big business or a small business, but you are working on a team and working to achieve things.

However, that doesn't mean that you aren't striving really hard to grow in the other areas of your life.
And maybe you questioning where you are. Maybe you feel lost between all of the responsibilities and the titles that you carry, and what it is you really want.

What is it you really want?

That doesn't necessarily mean changing careers or changing job positions.

It's really just digging into who we are.

And I am pleased to have Nicole Fredricks Jackson, an attorney, and life and career coach.

How do you bring those two together?

Sometimes I wonder that with Nicole, but you can see how the two hearts of her world are combined.

A demanding career leads her to look inside and determine what she really wanted to do. How was she prioritizing herself? It's that age-old saying of putting your oxygen mask on first.

As moms, we have the capacity to feel like we are last on the list and everything else has taken up that space.

So how do we put ourselves first?

That's exactly where Nicole and I are going to dig into this conversation, especially for professional women who have high-powered positions and moving up.
And even those individuals who are working three jobs and just trying to stay afloat. This is for you too.

We are kicking off a series for the month of May honoring moms coming from different spaces, and I think that there are some pretty fierce women who also carry the title of mother that I want you to hear from.

So this is for my mamas.

I can't wait for you to hear the story from my friend, Kimi Wilson. She is a licensed doula and the CEO and founder of Love Your Journey Doula Services.

She has a passion for helping mamas as a military spouse and someone who actively served that community with so much heart and desire.

She is also a mother of a special needs son whom she loves and cares for and is deeply involved in that community.

She has a 19 year old, a nine year old and a six year old.

I hope that no matter where you are in your motherhood journey, you can take something from Kimi's experience and advice. Especially the advice to start taking care of yourself...first. Because at the end of the day, mamas, if we don't care for ourselves, we're gonna be left empty.

So it's important that you begin to care for you.

So tune in to Kimmy's wonderful words and encouraging spirit.

It is time.

It is time, ladies, for us to take responsibility and action and education to be empowered around our financial lives.

On today's episode of Thrive For[e]ward, we welcome Sophie Antal-Gilbert from Russell Investments.

She is someone I partner with on the business side of things as an educator and someone who shares her knowledge, not only around investments and tax planning but also around the topics of women and wealth. And that's where she and I roll up our sleeves, kick back our feet, and have a very down-to-earth conversation about being moms, caregivers, and why women should care so much about their finances. What are the pieces that we really should be taking charge of? If you've got girlfriends who need to start having this conversation, or you've never talked about money with before, send this podcast and initiate that conversation. I know you're going to take some nuggets of knowledge away today

If you had to pick from the topics of death, sex, and money, what would you feel most comfortable talking about?
The reality is most people will actually probably feel more comfortable with talking about sex than they do about money or death.
Two topics that are important for us to have conversations around and not just wait until there is a need that occurs for us to address the important topics around them.

Today, I am joined by a dear and wonderful friend of mine, Brenna Galvin. Brenna is an elder law attorney and a death doula, which we will explain in the episode. The reason I absolutely adore Brenna is because she leads with her heart.
So tune in as we start talking about the taboo topics of death and money, and also how to have those conversations.

How do you have those tough conversations with the loved ones you're responsible for? What are the basics to have those critical conversations and care for yourself and the ones around you.

Tune into this episode as Brenna and I make these difficult conversations a little bit easier for you to have.

Dr. Alex Melkumian founder of the Financial Psychology Center and a financial psychologist joins us on this week's episode of the Thrive For[e]ward to discuss how we build on having what sometimes feels uncomfortable - conversations about our finances.

When we talk about wealth and our financial lives it is critical that we build healthy communication. We can add strategy, build wealth, but if one person in a partnership or family has more control, absent of communication than that creates an unhealthy situation.

A whole new area of therapy is being created out of the need to sort through financial problems. Dr. Alex specializes in helping individuals and couples sort through money anxiety and come out the other side feeling good about their future.

Why is wealth so concentrated in one demographic?

Why does the industry-leading these individuals look exactly the same?

How do make this impactful and expedited change?

In all honesty, we can’t sit around and use the excuse of “It takes time.” Yes, of course, it will take time to implement but not to start. I often heard this phrase every time in my corporate setting I would ask when we would have more females and advisors of color. The reality is, I truly believe people still think this is a career for men or don’t understand the awesome part of our career that we get to influence and participate in.

Sometimes, you have to trailblaze a road for others. On today’s podcast, I’m joined with the CEO and Founder of CHIP Professionals as well as fellow LPL Advisor, Dana Wilson. We discuss our experiences of finding these seemingly hidden careers, the advantages, and struggles of being women in a white, male-dominated industry. Dana founded CHIP Professional as a resource outlet for clients to find advisors of color specifically focused on black and Latinx advisors across the country.

Why should you as the end investor care about the diversity of an industry? It’s like so many industries out there that are battling the inclusivity of their cultures and I believe, call me bias, that our industry has the power to influence beyond just those that work in it but those that partner with us.

So two gals in different experiences yet tied together with a common goal — Dana and I break down the following:

  • How to work through sterotypes?
  • How to overcome a stigma in an industry that doesn’t look like you?
  • How do we create change in order to impact the next generation of wealth?

We all have grief in different spaces of our lives and many other emotions as well. If we don’t process these and try to keep the buttoned-up picture of ourselves together, what does that really do for us?

Do you think those that cry are not strong? But those that always have a smile on their face must have it all together? That you are required to keep your different roles in your life separate and they aren’t allowed to intertwine?
Then pull up a chair, turn up the volume, and listen to my conversation with the author and I will proclaim her as a true-life grief guru Nora McInerny. Did she want this title?

No, who does, that doesn’t sound fun or sexy. However, when your husband dies of brain cancer when your son is two years old and then several months later you lose your dad as well, you start to have a crash course on grieving. Not to mention Nora is an accomplished author (you can buy her books via the link below - you won’t regret it!), podcast host of Terrible Thanks for Asking, co-founder of the Hot Young Widow’s Club, advocate for those going through the craptastic moments of life by supporting people with unrestricted grants via her social enterprise Still Kickin.

Carpe Diem the Latin phrase that means seize the day. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in this space of seizing the day every time you put your feet on the floor after getting out of bed in the morning?

Or can you think of a moment that sprung you into action?

Just a few days ago we rounded the one-year mark, in Minnesota, from the first lock-down experience due to COVID-19.

The past twelve rolling months have provided us with many different experiences. We are actively awakening to multiple pandemics around us - not just of health but also race and mental health.

Perhaps, we spent time at the beginning of this experience reflecting and growing - how have you continued to allow that to be a part of your routine?

How have you, as Jasmine Stringer will discuss on this episode, looked in the rearview mirror - not a space of shame but rather reflecting on accomplishments and how you want to choose to live every day.

Jasmine shares with us how it’s not really the big things it’s the choices that we make every day. In fact, her book “Seize Your Life - How to Carpe Diem Every Day” is a perfect daily read and reminder of how we change our mindset to own that.

Jasmine and I talk about stepping into our true selves whether it’s through a life transition we have experience or finally decided to live our lives to the fullest.

Here are a few big take-a-ways that I had from Jasmine and I’s conversation:

  1. Seizing the day doesn’t have to be big and grandiose.
  2. Getting clear on your vision is a process and commitment - your why sustains you!
  3. Lifestyle changes are what takes your why to the next level.

What is your why? Are you ready to create the building block to living the life you want?

2020 brought the topic of equal pay to light even more than it had been. When households had to make the difficult decision to have someone stay home with the children who were no longer in school or did not have the ability to fund care providers to supplement education — they were put in a position of answering the question “Who makes more money?” Due to the wage gap, many women were the ones then having to leave their full-time jobs to stay home and care for their children.

The topic of caregiving no matter for children or others in our lives is one that usually lands on the shoulders of women. According to caregivers.org 75% of caregivers in the United States are female, this is usually a task that happens later in life, or at least most think that is the case. However, personally, I was 30 when my father was diagnosed with early-onset dementia and we had to begin a caregiving plan for him. This event happened right after the birth of my second child. My mother is his main caregiver however, I have to step in with the strategy and resources many times because this can be a very overwhelming topic for her and many no matter how strong you are.

You might be saying okay Shannon how does this all play into International Women’s Day and equal pay? Well when we think about the bigger picture and the design of the work force it usually is not designed for flexibility, even when we needed it most in 2020. So, how do we challenge the systems that are in place now, create opportunities for planning and communication, so we don’t continue this cycle for generations to come? Well, my thoughts are addressed in this episode of the Thrive For[e]ward podcast.

A few key pieces that we will cover in this episode:

  • What is the cycle of caregiving and how does it impact four areas of our lives - financially, relationships, practically, and our emotions/health.
  • How do we challenge our work environments to change in order to move forward?
  • What part does communication play in this change both in the workplace and at home?
  • Conversation starters for these transformational conversations in your life.
  • PLUS 5 key things you can do now to feel more empowered financially.

Tune into the latest episode to continue the #choosetochallenge theme for International Women’s Day 2021. Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you don’t miss out on any episode we are continuing with our them of women’s empowerment with all of our guests for March!

Have you ever found yourself feeling out of place? To the point that you were masking yourself to be someone who you weren’t? Perhaps it actually was (or is) impacting you more than you think - anxiety, weight gain, adult acne, insomnia, or affecting your relationships and views of the world?

If we dig deep it may be that our fears of something are actually convincing us that that we need to look and act a certain way. Fear that we may not have a job, that give us the resources to provide for our families, or even that we allow our fear to lead to our misjudgments of others because we are afraid that they may “replace” us.

Our guest today, Dawn Johnson certified Life Coach, walks us through the journey she had to discover. her authentic self and purpose after losing her job in an unexpected, yet too often experienced, way. She guides us through a wonderful conversation about her 20+ years in the corporate world as a black woman and how the life transition of leaving allowed her to be true to her and why you don’t have to wait for an experience like that to start your journey. Experiences are real and we can learn from each other’s stories and the wisdom that they share from those experiences.

Join Dawn and me in conversation together as she breaks down:

  • The journey to authentic self includes being okay with living in the messy
  • How stepping into your authentic self empowers your relationships with others
  • The “special" sauce that allow you to show up shining bright

Dawn drops us fierce knowledge on not only on discovering and leaning into your authentic self but also how we can lean into conversations with each other in order to learn at a deeper level. Specifically, we talk about white and black women coming together and how we can really create lasting change by coming together in compassion and love.

Love though isn’t always easy. It isn’t just heart emojis and thumbs up on social media. It is deeper. Love can be messy. Love can be direct. Love can be boundaries. AND first, you have to start with loving yourself. Our world has broken pieces (and arguably pieces of us) because there are so many people who don’t love themselves. The true kind of love - you’re able to stand confidently in who you are, you don’t react to the noise, and you are authentic to yourself. When you are grounded you are able to look at situations, people, and problems in your life with a whole new lens. Shame does not equal love.

As we have talked before on the podcast, your purpose doesn’t mean that you have to choose the entrepreneur journey like Dawn and I have, rather it just searching within you. The process to live authentically isn’t just that easy like snapping your fingers it takes the ability to dig deep. You are worthy of this happiness and getting through the mess and coming out a more sparkly version of an already incredible person!

On today's show I sit down with a woman that launched a business out of the pain and suffering of loss. Cheri Williams-Franklin invented Life Snapshot to save you the additional pain she went through after losing her sister. In my career, there are three pieces that I have found that most people end up struggling with because they do not spend the time to visit or re-visit the topics.

The first one is while you are still living by getting the right legal documents in order.

Secondly, designating and updating beneficiaries.

Lastly, I would say the cost and impact of the need for end of life care.

Communication has a direct effect on those we care for. Caregiving is not easy especially for those we love. There is the physical part of administering the care and there is a lot that is unseen — time off work, having to quit a job to care for someone full time, mental health, financial support, the drain of not having just the joy parts, family dynamics of the care falling on one person more than the other.

I am going to leave you with few pieces that you can take action on going forward:

  • Review your beneficiaries annually
  • Have conversations around your plans with those that will be impacted
  • Have conversations with your loved ones if you think they may be utilizing your services

Mac Gardner, a Certified Financial Planner practitioner, has served in the financial services industry for more than 20 years.

His passion for financial literacy led him to publish his first book, “Motivate Your Money!” in 2013. As his family grew and his clients began to ask him for ways to teach their kids about managing money he decided to use elements from his first book to develop a financial literacy platform for young children. The Four Money Bears represent the four basic functions of money. When children gain exposure to money management skills at an early age they are likely to develop healthy financial planning habits as adults. Mac is a true believer in the power of stories. He wants every child to know the story of “The Four Money Bears” and the benefits of sound money management for generations to come.

You are beautiful, unique, smart, confident, determined and powerful. This is the mission of Girls Are Powerful founded by our guest on the podcast today Shawntan Howell.

What we talk about in today’s session:

  • Taking your passion and move it into action
  • Impacting the lives of those around you positively
  • Fostering and developing a strong and empowering relationship with your daughter

If you can answer any of these questions {no right or wrong way}, today’s podcast is for you. Shawntan grew up in Chicago with a strong mother who showed her the possibilities of life, this didn’t mean that it was an easy trip. As she puts it, life is a rollercoaster, and isn’t that the truth. As a mother, now living in Minnesota in a predominantly white community raising her daughter, Shawntan wanted her to have the same feeling of being beautiful, unique, smart, confident, determined, and powerful -- So, Girls Are Powerful was born.

She did not have an easy start to the formation of her dream and her resilience kept her going through all of the “no’s” that she would hear. She was determined to have young girls feel empowered and to create a community that lead to conversations and action in supporting and creating space to take up space!

We should not have to shrink into our insecurities instead we should be able to stand tall. After my interview with Shawntan where we laughed and had fun and also got serious sharing our experiences I had an industry meeting. Throughout my career sometimes I have felt the need to mute myself or shrink to make other people feel good. Have you ever caught yourself in that situation? Today, with the meeting I “walked” into {it was on Zoom}, I took up space, shared my ideas, recognized others, and celebrated the wins I had unapologetically - I was the only woman in the room.

Shawntan and I talk about her experiences being the only. How 2020 allowed her to step further into her voice and live out her mission even deeper. When we stand confidently in who we are it doesn’t mean that we are cocky, rather it means we are unwavering. Resilience also helps us to find our footing again when the world, that doesn’t always follow the plan we have laid out, challenges us.

As we check in on one month into the new year, how are you feeling grounded?

Who is your team and squad of folks that are going to remind you of your greatness?

No matter BIG or small, how will you make a powerful impact on other’s in your life by shining the light on them and allowing them to take up the space they deserve?

We are coming off an extremely heavy year. As I write this, despite the ugliness and trials/tribulations of 2020, history is being made today - and there is power in that perspective switch. It doesn’t mean that we will ignore what has previously happened in our lives, the trauma that we have experienced, the loss that has occurred, or the frustrating pieces that may cause us to experience shame - rather redefining what those mean for us. Looking for opportunities to move forward and grow.

Growth is hard work and takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight. This month I wanted to bring you guests on the podcast that we're going to assist you in exploring what you might need in your tool-kit to define what your purpose was and grow in it.

We actually possess all of the power within ourselves to go in the directions we want to, it’s just whether or not we make the choice to push through, do the hard stuff and get there. As I’ve said before there is no magic formula or get rich quick scheme. While yes, I recognize that is an incredibly privileged statement to say, yes there are systems that work as blocks for some to not move forward - let’s break that down a bit more. As history is made today with Madame Vice President Kamala Harris being sworn in as the first of two accords - female and woman of color Vice President of the United States of America; what if she let her comfort and doubt win — would our little girls know that was possible for them too? How do we live out our purpose if we only listen to the negativity? If we only see the obstacle and say there isn’t a way around? There is. We need each other and we need the ability to be creative. After all - Kamala and many others who are firsts didn’t get there without looking at every obstacle creatively.

On today’s episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Fabiana Peterson a Brain-Life Coach. She brings true-life experience as well as certification and education to be able to talk to us about exploring more of our mindset to impact our purpose. She brings exactly the element I discussed above about creativity alive in our discussion. No creativity isn’t just the stroke of a paintbrush to a canvas (that is beautiful) it is also how we approach different situations in our lives.

“Creativity creates opportunities.

Comfort blocks us from opportunities.”

Fabiana believes that we can change our mindset. Which impacts our overall health and wellness - basically our LIFE. After all do you really want to live in a space that is meh - or do you want to experience life to YOUR fullest? She shares with us tips about how to transform your brain’s perspective - no we aren’t talking blindly being positive aka toxic positivity, we are talking about switching your brain. Here is what she says:

What are the areas of your life that you want to impact?

What are your wants and wishes for that?

Then at the end of every day, ask yourself, how have I lived these out. Again it is more about the vision of how we want our lives to be - the experience.

If you are feeling like you may have something in your life that is affecting you in a way that doesn’t fill you up right now - may you know it’s a difficult conversation you have to have, a new job you want but are scared to pursue, a toxic relationship you are in, an environment that isn’t serving you must listen to today’s episode with Fabiana Peterson.

Than after listening, if you define that you need to work more on your understanding of your financial wellness - stop living in denial of where you are, understand your wealth, and stop making excuses for being to busy to understand how your money works as a tool to live your life in purpose and on purpose - schedule time for your Wealth Assessment with me.

So often we hear that we are supposed to have goals and dreams. I can’t tell you how many times I sit down with people and they have no idea what their goals and dreams are -- or how to define them.

Is it because we live in a world that is constantly spinning on what those definitions should be?

The blanket advice - fast track - magic formula - latest trending topic or hashtag.

We struggle with defining these because sometimes we just need to slow down, sit, be still, and listen. It has been something in all honesty that I myself at times have struggled to do. Thankfully, I surround myself with people like our guest today Stephanie Walton who reminds us all to dig deep for our passion and then we can define better those goals and dream - first though we have to understand what brings us joy. True joy not superficial.

Learning about our conditioned mindset changed Stephanie’s life. She shares with us the three ways that you can have a conditioned mindset and how that may misguide you into what your passion.

  1. Not enough.
  2. Something is broken.
  3. I have to do something.

Our stories are real. Where we come from is real and if we think we leave it behind naturally without working through it, well we are sadly mistaken. It takes hard work and recognition to process, in a healthy manner, the trauma that we have all experienced. Are you sweeping the past under the living room rug, pushing the sofa on top of it, and then throwing those pretty decorative pillows to cover up the pain, hurt, abandonment, and other feelings we might carry deep?

As you go into a new year, rather than setting goals, that you might abandon, I encourage you to give this episode a listen and rather direct that energy to uncovering your passion. If you are living out your passion...how are you holding space for other people in your life to do the same? As Stephanie talks about in this episode, we don’t have to do it alone, so - put those earbuds in and give this episode a listen.

During today’s podcast, I interviewed my friend and mindset/movement coach JC Lippold. We have only known each other for six short months yet have had space to create meaningful and connected conversations because JC decided to live in his purpose rather than what other people told him to be.

People come into our lives for long periods of time and brief breaths - yet, we can offer so much meaning to each other through those interactions. JC created a community to do just that, it’s called 5K Everyday Conversations (you can find the links below to join). His vision was to create a space to allow people to connect while also redefining the term “I’m not a runner.”

Have you ever said to yourself or someone else “Oh I’m not…[insert whatever it was for you]”.

I’m sure you have. I know I used to say the same term that JC started the group for. I was NOT a runner until I was! How does it feel when we redefine the space or experiences that we have?

Can you imagine a time you did something that you didn’t think was possible but instead it was and you proved it to yourself through execution? I know I have a long list of things I could have at one point in life said “I’m not…” AND now, now I AM!

I encourage you to listen to today’s podcast because beyond moving into the space of believing in ourselves — JC and I dive into vibrant topics like how to create a community in conversation, normalizing mental health, what health is, how our money beliefs impact our futures, and how thriving doesn’t have to be about the past or the future but rather is looking at the focused effort to be present in our current state.

One of my favorite parts of JC and I’s conversation is when we dive into the space of being present.

How do you know where you are, if you aren’t present? What is it in your life that you need to be more present with? Hangout with JC more by connecting with him:

Uncertainty is the name of the game. As Kris, and many others say, change will be the only constant that we will experience in life, so how will you embrace that?

As we reflect back on 2020, which was FULL – there are things that we could tally up that were more than just obstacles – a full-on obstacle course like the Tough Mudder, a surprise at every turn. Sure, with the flip of the calendar, it doesn’t mean everything goes away. In fact, we still are climbing up the hill and I know many of you are still feeling exhausted.

Our guest on today’s podcast Kris Petersen, Executive Coach, Trainer, and Speaker who spent her career working in the financial industry will share why emotional intelligence is so important to that aspect of moving forward. At the beginning of the year, we hear so many terms like resolutions and goals that we should be focused on but how, how when everything feels so stuck do we move?

In order to move, we have to know where we are, we have to understand what happened before – what we will learn from and what we will continue to do, and most importantly we need to define what is important to us – what are our values and vision for what we want. Defining our values and beliefs are different than goals – they work as our compass when well stuff hits the fan. Kris and her team have a great tool to help you discover your five top values on their website I’ll link below. Once you have established your values it’s easier to define what is important and what is not – what we truly have control over.

We don’t have control over uncertainty, however, we can plan for some of the turns in life, and for the other’s we need to arm ourselves with resilience. These two topics I discuss frequently in my Money Matters workshop. Life will change, 2020 taught us that by just ripping out the carpet and letting all the ugly and gross dust bunnies show. You do have a choice, we want to empower you toward making a choice – you can look at life and try to control it or you can understand that the uncontrollable will happen, and how to better flow with it by planning for it.

Kris delivers countless nuggets of knowledge in the podcast to help you see through uncertainty and into a bit more clarity. A couple of take-a-ways that I had from our conversation:

  1. Goals are different than dreams – well-defined goals will get you to achieve that dream.
  2. Be honest with yourself – when you set goals do you have the time, money, and support to do what you want to. If not how will you get it?
  3. Get a trainer if you don’t have one. Having a difficult time understanding how to talk about money with yourself, your partner, or other influential people in your life? Talk to an advisor that is trained and willing to dig past the surface to work with you on the emotional aspects of money.
  4. Plan for uncertainty instead of trying to control it.

This podcast is for you if you are ready to take steps into 2021 that means you are building a healthy and impactful foundation in your life and with your wealth. As a reminder, I believe wealth is interchangeable with money. Your wealth is not determined by a dollar amount rather you being able to reach the space in life where you feel grounded and are able to enjoy life the way you have dreamed of. However, to Kris’ point, dreams are not achieved without the small goals to get there!

The killing of George Floyd is sparking crucial conversations in this country. But even though many of us have the desire to talk about what divides us, we don't know where to start.

That's why, in the scope of just a few months, LaToya Burrell wrote an entire book on how to begin a conversation leading to racial reconciliation.

She gives guidance on how to spark respectful discussion between people that may not have been comfortable talking to each other about these issues in the past.

As we approach the election season, know that there are a lot of issues to consider, we often correlate our own financial picture to certain parts of politics. On today’s podcast we are joined by guest Mark Eibel and he will share key pieces on why we should consider leaving politics out of our financial planning.

We talk about long and short term impacts to our current environment. You may be asking yourself why the economy is at an uncomfortable spot for most us, but why is the stock market up when so many people are unemployed? Tune in as Mark shares his insights with us.

Perhaps you are gearing up for a life transition like retirement, how will the current environment change how you should continue financial planning and not take your eye off the road toward your goals.

How will taxes be affected by the current and past stimulus packages?

Mark spends time breaking down these topics and more in an approachable matter so you can take the soundbites and have a good conversation with your planning team.

Resources on a few of the pointe Mark mentions in the podcast:

We are living in a time of the force of the world changing and evolving. Sometimes before the change occurs for the greater good we have to uncover much of what we might not be so proud of. What is normal even any more? We miss the concerts, baseball games, weddings, birthday parties, impromptu outings….and what have the two current pandemics taught us that the new normal, we now have the power to create, might look like.

We are joined by yogi and Diversity and Inclusion professional Ericka Jones who has worked with top national and global companies.

We will discuss how you ground yourself in finding your true north despite two pandemics – COVID and Racial Reconciliation. Our world’s feel like they are rocked, Ericka and I discuss what are the ways we can uncover ourselves the center and grounding in what are tense times we live in. From that space then, how can we more positively and respectfully approach controversial topics like social and racial justice in order to move forward.

How does your true north guide you? How does your ego get in the way of showing up?

How do we need to disrupt yet stay aligned with this true north?

Ericka will talk with us about how we can repurposed this disruption with compassion.

If you would like to follow Ericka and participate in her upcoming yoga series that she has give her a follow on Instagram.

Caregiving is near and dear to me and also my guest on this episode of the podcast. Unfortunately, this will most likely impact your life if it has not already. Karla Hult, Alzheimer's advocate and reporter for KARE 11 (Twin Cities NBC affiliate) joins us to share her personal journey caring for her father as he battled and ultimately lost his battle with Alzheimer's. Since the diagnosis of her father she has been dedicated to bringing awareness to the disease that impacts more lives than that of breast cancer.

Karla recently put together a journalistic piece highlighting her family's journey with Alzheimer's. You can view this piece: KARE 11 Alzheimer's Special Report with Karla Hult

More than 5 million people of all ages live with this disease that does not have a cure.

13.8 million people will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's by 2050 according to the Alzheimer's Association.

$244 BILLION worth of care is provided by families and other unpaid caregivers.

Statistical Source: https://www.alz.org/alzheimers-dementia/facts-figures

Karla Hult loves living and reporting in her home state of Minnesota. She’s forever inspired by the character and courage of the people she meets on most every story.

Karla attended St. Olaf College, where she graduated magna cum laude with a double major in English and Political Science. At St. Olaf, she was also inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. She later graduated with a Master’s of International Affairs from Columbia University in New York, where she also earned a writing fellowship.

Karla worked as a newspaper reporter before embarking on her television journalism career. She returned to her home state for a reporting job at WCCO-TV before deciding to cross the street to her “T.V. home” at KARE 11.

At KARE, Karla has received multiple awards, including the prestigious Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Political Journalism. But she remains most proud of her advocacy work against Alzheimer’s Disease and for refugees.

When Karla is not working, advocating or traveling the world, she and her husband Gary are busy raising their two daughters.

ESG investing is subject to numerous risks; chief amongst these is that returns may be lower than when decisions are based solely on investment considerations. All company names noted herein are for educational purposes only and not an indication of trading intent or a solicitation of their products or services. Because of their narrow focus, sector investing will be subject to greater volatility than investing more broadly across many sectors and companies.

2016 survey by Natixis Global Asset Management of participants in 401K and other defined contribution plans found that 82%of respondents said they want investments in their retirement plan that reflect their personal values.

Danielle will join us to talk about life transitions and how to overcome life when it just so happens to throw you a curveballs. She hasn't definitely caught a few of those in her life!

Danielle Epps is an advocate, educator, mother, sister, and former media personality. Danni Starr, to most, began her career at the age of 19 stepping into the public eye as a media personality on local radio in the Twin Cities. Her career began to skyrocket as she connected with the audience in a real and authentic way they had not experienced before. Through her professional career she has had the opportunity to interview Jimmy Fallon, Will & Jada Smith, Ice Cubes, Selena Gomez, Tyler Perry and every child of the 90's dream - the Backstreet Boys, and the list goes on. Danielle had the great opportunity to move to Washington D.C. to become the part of a national morning show on a BIG network. She took the opportunity and moved across the country and started a new life for her family. What happened when she got there was a whirlwind. She battled racism and sexism in the workplace. She had two babies at home. She became a single mom after infidelity with her ex. She wrote a book about it: Empathy and Eyebrows.

The piece that she always had close to her was the passion to educate no matter if in her volunteer work or through her activism. As a survivor of postpartum she began sharing her truth. She is the honored recipient of the 2016 Ambassador of the Year for the National Office of Women's Health. She has since made the heart-fulfilling career change to work as a teacher in the inner cities of Washington D.C. to work with youth - giving them hope and love to be the future our world needs. The glow that she gets from these kids is priceless, worth more than any interview with anyone in Hollywood.
