Ascension Sunday

Paul takes a moment to survey the wondrous Cross of Christ in Romans 3:27-31. This is Paul's Closing Argument in God's Case Against the Human Race, in Romans 3:9-20. We will find the final answer to our question we asked when this court was convened back in Rom. 1:18-20: What's Wrong with the World? Paul answers with one word, the last word in both Rom. 3:9 and 3:20: SIN. We will take a hard look at our great human enemy, sin ... defining it, considering it, sitting under it without being able to wriggle out from under it. It is not easy material, but it is priceless in its TRUTH value, because until we have a certain diagnosis, we cannot find a cure! Come hear God's diagnosis of humanity's greatest problem this Sunday! And then next Sunday, we will consider His glorious CURE for every believer through Jesus Christ our LORD!

Exhibit C is God's Case Against the Human Race, a representative of humanity that is the Best Case - the Jews, God's Chosen People. Paul writes as a consummate insider, a Jew writing about Jews, and the Holy Spirit gave Paul profound insights into the Jewish heart and their sacred texts of the Torah and the Prophets. Paul will reveal how even the Jews, precious to God as the very heart of humanity, the blessed recipients of the oracles of God in the Torah and all the Hebrew Scriptures, still fall short and end up doing the same things as the other Exhibits in the Court. We will see the genius of God in planning specifically to change the hearts of Jewish believers, His way of making hearts holy like He is holy, determined and written in the Torah itself and in Ezekiel.

We return to the Courtroom, for Exhibit B in God's Case Against the Human Race, a representative of humanity that is the Good Case, in Romans 2:1-16. How many of us have heard people describe themselves this way: "I'm a good person, I don't hurt anybody. I'm pretty sure I'm going to heaven because I am a good person..." Sadly, this prevalent view is woefully inaccurate. When Jesus was called "Good Teacher," He rightly pointed out, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone." (Mark 10:18). This week's text will make an epic contrast between our double-standard, 'easygoing on ourselves but harsh on others' human judgment, and the unchanging, fair and impartially applied righteous judgment of God. And the main thing that makes God's judgment so right and so different is that it always begins with KINDNESS, for "the kindness of God leads you to repentance." (Rom. 2:4).

This coming Sunday, July 25, we will get into I John chapter 4. This is where we find the famous verse, “Greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world”. How do we live out this amazing truth in our lives? This passage has lot to say about how to tell what is true and what is false. Coming out of a year of fake news, exaggerated claims, and predictions that didn’t happen, we really need some help discerning what is really TRUE.
This week is all about where Christian love comes from and how to stand before God someday in confidence rather than fear. Great stuff!
I’ll be teaching I John 3. Here are some of the questions we will be dealing with: How do I know if I’m really walking with God? Why do I feel guilty all the time? How do I really know if I have eternal life?

I also love the whole idea of communing intimately with HIM and with each other at the same time. The picture of the broken Body of Jesus coming back together in our gathering is powerful and beautiful.
This Sunday we will celebrate communion together and I can’t wait. I will also bring a teaching on the nature of the church. Why do we gather? What is our purpose as a community of faith? The number one answer, hands down, was government and politics! How do you know when to obey versus disobey? What do you do when your rights are violated? What should the role of a real Christian be in politics?
“What does the Bible really say about ______?”With the collective confusion happening around us in our culture right now, we need to come back to God’s Word to find His answers. What are you curious or concerned about and you need to know what God’s Word says?
This Sunday, TC Foster will be preaching. TC is Conejo’s youth pastor and has a great gift for communicating God’s Word. His message will be on endurance, hope, and patience from the life of Joseph.
The book of John says that Jesus came “full of grace and truth”. He didn’t have to choose one or the other and neither do those who are filled by His Spirit!
Special guest preacher Bishop Broderick Huggins. He will be bringing a timely message on Reconciliation with the Lord, with each other, and in our nation.

If it isn’t real and it’s just “propped-up joy” then it gets blown right over by life. Let’s learn together how to have resilient, powerful, beautiful JOY from The Lord!
This weeks theme will be FAITH. Please take a look at Isaiah 9:2-7. Here’s a question to think about before Sunday: If you sat in a broken chair and fell through, would you never sit in a chair again or would you find a better chair?

Yes, 2020 has been hard. Yes, God is still GOOD (Psalm 42 & 43).
This Sunday we will GIVE THANKS!! I will be teaching from the Book of Luke about the 10 lepers who were healed. If you remember the story, only ONE of those healed, whose lives had been completely changed, returned to give thanks to Jesus. Thanks-giving is a right response to God’s goodness in our lives. It is also a very powerful tool that helps us get through hard times and keep our focus above instead of below. We will take time in the service to give thanks publicly for the amazing gifts our Lord has given us
Our subject on Sunday is “Serving Others”. We will learn how serving actually helps us to grow in Jesus and to become more like HIM! You will hear from a few friends as they share about what serving means to them. We will also be celebrating communion together. If you’re watching from home, please make sure you have some communion elements ready. If you’d like to read ahead, you can read John chapter 13.
This week our subject is SABBATH. If you are excellent at resting in Jesus. If you are already good at pacing yourself and having a good balance of work and recovery, feel free to take this weekend off. But, IF you may need a little, or a lot, of help in this area I hope you will join us! Sunday will not be a guilt trip to tell you to take a day off. It WILL be an invitation from Jesus for all of us to find our rest in HIM and to live less frantic lives.

I love the words of Psalm 146 - “Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save… Blessed are those whose … hope is in the Lord their God.”
This Sunday will be amazing. We are moving back indoors together for the season and our big subject is WORSHIP! I can’t wait. We will be learning together what Jesus meant when He said to worship “in Spirit and in Truth”. We will enjoy our Lord in a few different ways, including with some of our favorite worship songs. We will also be taking communion together…
Our big theme is SIMPLICITY. As I think back, I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say, “I wish my life was more complicated.” Simplicity in the Bible is about singular focus and learning to avoid the distractions that are all around us. Let’s learn together how to simplify our inner lives and also our outer lives. Let me leave you with a good question to prepare your heart for Sunday… “Is Jesus enough for you?” I hope that will get your wheels turning.

As we dig into different spiritual disciplines in our "Spiritual Coping Skills" series, prayer is the next big one for us to understand and grow in. Prayer for a Christian is like air to a deep sea diver. We cant go very far or very long without it! Ill be sharing an amazing story with you as well about a prayer warrior named Honi, who was called " the circle maker".
Did you know that Bible reading is down significantly during this COVID season? It is hard to believe that during this time when we most need God’s input, peace, wisdom, and nearness, many of us are not taking advantage of the gift of God’s Word.

I can’t wait for this Sunday! We are finally in the last chapter of Acts and we are ready to wrap up our series. I hope you have enjoyed this journey half as much as I have. If you want to read ahead, check out what happens in Acts 28. St. Paul changed the world for Jesus and wrote half of our New Testament. Why would God want this wonderful leader to spend his last few years on earth in prison, chained to a guard? This is the prison where Paul writes Philippians, which has so MUCH to say about JOY. This is also the place where the last verse of Acts says Paul proclaimed the Kingdom and Jesus “without any hindrance.”
What was his secret? How could he be so “unchained” while in his chains? What can we learn about the things that hinder each of us, especially from sharing the Good News of Jesus with others?

Dan is the Executive Director of ACTION (Area Christians Taking Initiative On Needs), which sends out volunteers from more than 80 local churches in community service work. He and his wife, Shirley, are moving to Charlotte, so he wanted to share some final words of encouragement and challenge with all of us. I met with Dan this week to prepare the service and what he has to share is amazing! John B and friends will be leading worship.

"Rock Sunday!" is one of our favorite traditions each year. As you think and pray about 2020, begin to ask The Lord how HE sees the coming year. Ask HIM, "How can my life bring YOU glory this year?" Now, see if there is a word that describes the answer. We will spend time this Sunday and next listening, asking, and writing words. When you sense Jesus putting a word in your mind, wirte it on a rock and put it somewhere obvoius in your home, office or car. Lean into your word. Allow it to give direction to your prayers and also influence what you say "Yes" and "No" to this year.
