As often happens when we go through life, we learn things along the way. And sometimes we learn things that we so desperately wish we had learned earlier. Does that negate their value now? No. Is learning part of the process? Of course. But I think we can learn a lot about ourselves now by acknowledging what we have already learned. Since it’s middle of summer energy, this felt like a great time to share ten things I wish I’d known in my 20s. Let’s jump right in.

Over the years of this podcast, we’ve simply been tweaking the order of how we live, starting with who we are today, not who we wish to be in the future.
That’s why on this first day of the year, I don’t want to talk about goals and habits and starting a new year. All three of those things are actually quite valuable and a normal part of our lives, and we’ll even talk about some of them over the next few weeks. Today, however, I want to start somewhere else. I am aware of the irony of using the word “relaxing” when it comes to a home routine, especially during this time of year which tends to be on the busier side. However, I’m into it. This special episode is presented by KFC and Acast Creative. KFC chicken nuggets have made their debut and they truly are the perfect chicken nugget. And since KFC chicken nuggets are something that saves dinner for my family, I thought I’d share more examples of that in today’s episode.

Let’s take a minute to validate the complexity that is caregiving. It’s loving and fulfilling and something we’re probably honored to do. Most often, we’re caring for people we deeply love, who are desperately important to us, and when pressed, we’d likely say it’s an honor and privilege to care for that person or people.
But caregiving is also constant and often draining. It takes so much energy to be on for people pretty much all the time, especially when we’re tending to their needs more than our own.

Are you feeling “rut energy” around the table? Maybe you’re already tired of soup. Maybe you had January goals to cook more at home or try new things, and you haven’t experienced that the way you hoped. Maybe you’re having to tighten your budget after the holidays and don’t have as much to spend on groceries, not to mention that the price of them is going up.
I would like us to put a positive spin on this ordinary, “rut energy” season, and I think one of the ways you can do that is through meal prep.

We do these episodes about once a quarter for two reasons. One, it’s a wonderful practice that I want to remind you of as often as possible. And two, because our seasons of life change, so do the things that save them.
It’s really important to me that we pay attention to seasonal practices so that we get off that train of a linear life that goes from start to finish. That’s not how life works, so let’s remember what is working for us, bringing us joy, and saving our lives right now.

It’s January, it’s the beginning of a new year, and our options used to be either lazy or genius. We’ve been trying to be geniuses about the start of a new year for too long, but the alternative is not ignoring it or dismissing it or saying that the new year doesn’t matter. There can be something really special about coming out of a busy holiday season, getting a new planner, and starting fresh. But starting fresh does not mean you have to start over, so today we’re going to talk about the Lazy Genius way to approach a new year.

There’s a decent chance that while you love the feeling of the holidays in your home, you’re also a little overwhelmed by it. There’s the regular upkeep of one’s home - the general cleaning and tidying, but there’s also a lot of extra stuff around the house this time of year. And because our tendency is to be fairly extreme in our response to challenges - either try hard or give up - we stay overwhelmed. Let’s create a small solution to the normal challenges of a holiday home so we can enjoy it while the holidays are here.

First, there’s a different strategy when you’re visiting the pool once or twice versus going to the pool again and again. If you’re going as a guest, you pack your bag with towels and snacks and whatever you or your kids need for the day, you go, you have fun, and you come home. One-off experiences are generally a little more forgiving. It’s the repeated ones that can be a bit frustrating.
This episode is going to be focused on spending multiple days a week or basically spending the summer at the pool. There will be some great tips for people who only go once or twice or maybe go to the beach or just summer outings in general, but the focus here is going to the pool again and again.

The Magic Question is what can I do now to make something easier later? The smaller the something, the easier the solution. When you ask the magic question, you usually get a pretty quick win. When you get in the habit of asking that question and then noticing how even the simplest answers can positively impact your day and your time and your energy and your attitude, you want to keep asking! It’s a great question.

In my book that released last week, The Lazy Genius Kitchen, I shared something kind of revolutionary. A cooking formula that could change how you approach recipes forever. Last week I shared part one of The Lazy Genius Kitchen where I teach the five steps, and today I want to apply those five steps to a few specific areas of the kitchen, just like I do in part two of the book! Now today, I’m not using any material from part two of the book; I’m not repeating what’s in there. What I am doing is taking specific problems that you all have and applying the five Lazy Genius steps to those problems to see if we can find some solutions.

Rest itself is such a needed thing for all of us. After all, a Lazy Genius principle is to schedule rest, mostly because we just let it happen and it never does. But I have also been paying a lot of attention to the different kinds of rest and why certain kinds don’t always land for us. Or why we take the time to rest but still feel unfilled after. A conversation around the nuance of rest is desperately needed, especially when a lot of us are working with less margin than we ever have before. So let’s dive in.

We are very good at talking about productive things, domestic things, hard being-a-person things, but we don’t often talk about specifically fun things. The busier we are, the more humans we interact with and care for, the more we don’t deal with the mounting pressure of what it means to be a person in this world right now, we don’t leave a lot of room for fun. And I want us to actually systemize it today. I want us to Lazy Genius fun and for you to figure out how to add more fun to your life on purpose.

I don’t have a lot of time, you probably don’t either, and even if you do, most of us don’t necessarily want to spend all of it doing chores. Lazy Genius of the Week: Paula Kay Myers
Love the soup podcast and need to share with you my LG gift idea. My 80-year-old dad and stepmom, like most 80-year-olds, don’t need or want anything. They actually act bratty when receiving a gift. But 2 years ago I had a brainstorm! I wrapped a case of 12 quart mason jars in Christmas paper and when they opened it I told them it was a soup of the month club. Perfect gift - consumable, practical, and something to look forward to. And I always delivered it with fresh bread. It also obligated me to a monthly visit with them. We were about 45 minutes apart at the time and they absolutely loved it. And began asking me in March when they had the option to renew. My husband and I have since moved 12 hours away so this year when I was visiting after Thanksgiving, I filled their deep freezer with bags of soup and wrapped up 2 cute soup bowls. Best gift I’ve ever given.

In total, I have ten principles to consider about the body - yours, other people’s, how you engage with your body when you’re alone, and how you pay attention to your body when you’re with other people, hormones, privilege, and the complexity of body positivity. We’ll start with the first five today.

Today, I’m sharing ten things to help you navigate siblings who fight. To give you some context, I am not an expert. I’m only a mom. I am not a child psychologist or a parenting expert. I am in the thick of parenting with two boys who are 11 and 9 and a five year old daughter. It’s not like I’m seasoned in this. What I’m sharing today is simply what has helped in my own experience that is also informed by what I’ve learned from parenting experts but mostly my own therapy.

Have you ever wished you were one of those people who could welcome anyone into your home for a meal or a hang without plans? Or maybe you’ve experienced one too many encounters where your brain forgot that your guests might need cups or need some sort of direction to really feel welcome in your space. Today, we’re talking about hospitality on the fly because summer is peak season for spontaneous hospitality. And if it matters to you, I want you to feel like you can say an enthusiastic “Yes!” when a pool day turns into an unexpected pizza night or ice cream hang or whatever.

Obviously, summer reading is a big thing for a lot of people, and if you’re new around here, reading is one of my favorite things on the planet. Today though, I want to talk about something more specific. I want us to create a summer reading club. A reading club is a group of readers (and if you read the book, you are a reader, friend) talking about what they individually have been reading.

A House Rule is something that could keep that first domino from teetering and knocking over everything else. All of us have different kinds of summers, and all of us likely experience different modes and priorities, again, within the same summer. House Rules can really help give a little steadiness to that if you want it.
Helpful Companion Links
I want us to plan a summer day without turning into robots or without leaving literally everything to chance where we’re playing it cool on the outside because we’re cool and spontaneous and we go with the flow and on the inside we’re literally screaming in terror because going with the flow forever and always is just as stressful as planning every minute.

We all have bad days and for different reasons. There’s something about being inside a bad day that feels like there’s no way out. You kind of just have to wait until the next day and start over. None of us want bad days, but all of us have them. So let's Lazy Genius how to rally a bad day.

But if those lists worked, you’d make more dinner more often and be less stressed about it. That’s why we’re going to talk about how to make your own list that works for your family and your lifestyle because I’m guessing a jar of roasted red peppers and grasini don’t make the cut.
