ABA on Tap is proud to present Kristyn Peterson (Part 1 of 2):

A BCBA passes the exam, gets promoted fast, and suddenly has to lead teams, train new RBTs, manage payer demands, and still protect the client’s care. That jump can feel like getting handed the keys to a moving car, especially in underserved markets where there is no mentorship bench and no clean roadmap for what a clinical director should actually do.

Kristen Peterson joins ABA on Tap to tell the truth about early-career leadership in applied behavior analysis, from building scalable supervision systems to navigating rural ABA service delivery across long distances. We dig into cultural competence in autism services, including how providers earn trust in communities with different religious norms, different parenting styles, and real skepticism toward “outside experts.” We also talk ethics in plain language, what happens when you see harmful punishment practices, and how to balance reporting obligations with compassionate parent support.

Then we get into the hard part: private equity buyouts, policy shifts that squeeze training opportunities, and the moral injury that hits when leaders are asked to defend decisions they believe will hurt staff or families. We unpack how algorithmic hours tools and templated programming can quietly replace clinical judgment, and why the art of individualized ABA still matters when research meets the living room. Subscribe, share this with a colleague, and leave a review if it resonates. Where have you felt the strongest pressure between efficiency and ethics?

ABA on Tap is proud to present Mark Malady (Part 2 of 2):

If you have ever felt pressured to list “behaviors for reduction” even when you know the real need is skill building, this conversation will hit home. ABA on Tap continues our sit down with Mark Malady, to talk about constructional ABA, where the aim is not to stop behavior for everyone else’s comfort but to build the repertoires that let a learner get their needs met with more freedom, safety, and dignity.

We get into why procedure-heavy programming can create rigid learning that looks great on paper but does not generalize in real life. From joint attention and enriched environments to response classes and functional outcomes, we explore how to stop obsessing over response form and start focusing on what the behavior does. That includes a candid take on eye contact goals, developmental milestone traps, and why “critical periods” matter less than building the component skills that support informed choice.

We also unpack process-based practice and measurement. Mark shares how process can still be measurable and accountable, why clinicians may need to make many small adjustments in a single session, and how low-dose models can outperform massive hour prescriptions when targets are chosen well. You will also hear about the 'GenArete' skill-based assessment, milestone benchmarking, and a powerful example of “dignity of risk” where opportunity, not skill deficit, is the real barrier.

If this episode sharpens your thinking, subscribe for more conversations that challenge default ABA habits, share it with a colleague, and leave a review so more clinicians and families can find the show. What would you stop targeting tomorrow if you shifted fully to function and quality of life?

Tune In, Drink Up, and ALWAYS ANALYZE RESPONSIBLY.

ABA on Tap is proud to present Mark Malady (Part 1 of 2):

A piece of duct tape on the floor becomes a turning point for how we think about safety, reinforcement, and basic human connection. Mike and Dan sit down with Mark Malady to trace the long arc from an IEP and constant school changes to building programs for adults with severe aggression and minimal communication. Along the way, Mark shares the moment he stopped accepting the “he doesn’t like people” assumption and started asking a better behavioral question: what history built this repertoire, and what would it take to build a new one?

ABA on Tap and Mark give a full pour of the ideas that shape real clinical work. Mark connects early experience in adult disability services to big-picture themes in applied behavior analysis: functional communication, humane reinforcement, and why our field too often mistakes procedural compliance for effective intervention. He breaks down process versus procedure orientation in plain language, ties it to ACT and relational frame theory, and explains why relationship quality often predicts outcomes better than which “manual” you follow.

Finally, we get honest about the hard parts of ABA in autism services and school settings: power dynamics, “firefighting” models that wait for crisis, and resource decisions that prioritize deceleration over skill acquisition. If you care about ethical ABA, assent and consent, better assessment practices, and building meaningful skills across the lifespan, this conversation will challenge you in the right ways. Subscribe for Part 2, share this with a colleague, and leave a review with the biggest question you want our field to answer next.

Tune in, drink up and ALWAYS ANALYZE RESPONSIBLY.

ABA on Tap is proud to sit down with Lupe Castañeda (Part 2 of 2):

You can have the best behavior plan in the world and still fail if the classroom doesn’t trust you. Mike and Dan pick up part two with Lupe Castaneda, and get practical about school-based ABA, BCBA leadership in schools, and the messy middle where collaboration meets real-world constraints. We talk through what it looks like when we’re “not the experts” in the family system or the classroom environment, yet we’re brought in because something is already going wrong, and the people in the room may not want change.

From there, we get into the hard stuff most people won’t say out loud: school politics, predetermined placement decisions, and how to protect your staff when they’re doing great work but still getting nitpicked. Lupe shares how he approaches teacher buy-in by building rapport, talking with paraprofessionals, and living the principle of “show me, don’t tell me” rather than being the BCBA in the corner with a laptop. We also explore supervision and mentorship strategies that improve retention, including bi-directional feedback, coaching, and shaping performance instead of punishing mistakes.

We then zoom into tactics for bridging 1:1 ABA into group instruction: small-group DTT, instructional pacing, short learning sprints, contextual fit, and preparing students for natural environments. Along the way we unpack clinical judgment, crisis prevention, and why it matters to teach teams how to think on the fly, especially when the difference between an extinction burst and failed treatment is not obvious to educators. We wrap with burnout prevention, skill diversification, and why staying curious might be the most underrated career strategy in behavior analysis.

If this helped you, subscribe, share it with a school-based BCBA or teacher, and leave a review so more people can find the show. What’s the biggest obstacle you hit when trying to collaborate in schools?

Tune in, drink up and ALWAYS ANALYZE RESPONSIBLY.

ABA on Tap is proud to sit down with Lupe Castañeda (Part 1 of 2):

If you’ve ever walked into a school confident in your assessment, your data, and your “best practice” plan, and still watched it fall apart by week two, you’re not alone. Mike and Dan sit down with Lupe Castaneda, a longtime school-based BCBA and consultant, to talk about what actually makes ABA in schools work, and what quietly makes it fail even when everyone has good intentions.

We start with Lupe’s path into the field, from early exposure to children with disabilities to adapted physical education, autism support, and becoming one of the earliest full-time BCBAs employed by a Texas school district. Along the way, he shares the moments that reshaped his practice, including a hard lesson about making changes without family input and a blunt IEP meeting reminder that experience means nothing if you cannot explain what you will do for this specific child.

From there, we dig into the practical heart of school-based behavior support: family-centered programming, meaningful long-term goals, parent education, and the legal and team-driven reality of the IEP process. We also break down two essentials for any behavior intervention plan or functional behavior assessment in a school setting: collaboration and contextual fit. A plan is only “evidence-based” if it can be implemented by real educators in real classrooms with real constraints, and if it respects the priorities of the student and family.

This is Part 1 of our conversation with Lupe. Subscribe so you don’t miss Part 2, and if this resonates, share it with a BCBA, teacher, or parent navigating school services. What’s the biggest challenge you’ve seen when ABA meets the classroom?

Tune in, drink up and ALWAYS ANALYZE RESPONSIBLY.

ABA on Tap is proud to present Asia Johnson (Part 2 of 2):

A kid can learn their colors and still be worse off if they’ve been trained to silence “no.” That tension drives our candid conversation with Asia Johnson as we wrestle with what ethical, modern ABA therapy should look like when the goal is a real life, not perfect compliance. We talk honestly about how many clinicians are shaped by a single supervisor, a single company, and a single packaged system, and how that funnel can turn good people into one-track practitioners without meaning to.

From VB-MAPP popularity to PEAK’s assessment structure, we dig into “teaching to the test” and why assessment scores can’t be the finish line. We compare naturalistic teaching with discrete trial training as a tool, then zoom out to the bigger issue: assent-based practice, withdrawal of assent, and the fine line between instruction and coercion. We also unpack a hard but necessary question for client outcomes: what did it cost to get that progress, and did it create masking, trauma, or reduced self-advocacy?

Then we shift into cultural competency in ABA and autism services in Black communities, where programming details matter, like hair care routines, barber shop versus salon experiences, and language goals that erase AAVE. Asia breaks down how competency, referral decisions, Medicaid access, and limited provider pools collide in the real world, plus why research diversity and historical medical mistrust shape family engagement. If you care about trauma-informed care, ethical ABA, and culturally responsive autism support, this conversation will stretch your thinking. Subscribe, share this with a colleague, and leave us a review with the biggest “success metric” you think ABA should be judged by.

Enjoy the second pour with Asia Johnson, share this with a parent or clinician who needs it, subscribe and leave a review with your take. Tell us---what should ethical ABA protect first?

ABA on Tap is proud to present Asia Johnson (Part 1 of 2):

A two-pound baby in the NICU. A young mom in a demanding academic track. Years of sleepless nights, confusing behaviors, and a system full of waitlists and half-answers. Asia Johnson joins us to share the throughline that connects all of it-- learning how to advocate for her daughter, and then bringing that same urgency and empathy into the ABA field as an RBT and later a BCBA.

In this pour of ABA on Tap, Mike, Dan and Asia get real about what families feel after an autism diagnosis, especially when the people around them do not understand ASD, and when community stigma makes support harder to access. Asia breaks down why the five stages of grief are not just theory, but a practical tool for parent support and for clinicians who want to teach skills without ignoring the emotional load caregivers carry. We also talk about acceptance as a daily practice: redefining happiness, building structure, and choosing goals that protect dignity and independence.

From masking and stimming to school accommodations and powerful self-advocacy, Asia gives vivid examples of what growing up autistic can look like for a level one pre-teen. Then we dig into culturally responsive ABA: dialect, identity, and why therapy must meet a child where they are rather than sanding down culture to fit a narrow idea of “proper.” Finally, Asia shares what she has seen when ABA goes wrong and why ethical leadership has to interrupt harmful clinic cultures before they reproduce.

Enjoy this first pour, return for part 2, share this with a parent or clinician who needs it, subscribe and leave a review with your take. Tell us---what should ethical ABA protect first?

ABA on Tap is proud to present Holli Beth Clauser (Part 2 of 2):

Grab a comfortable seat and get ready for your second pour of truth telling and good hiring.

"They’re just RBTs” might be the most expensive sentence an ABA organization can say. We sit down with Holli Beth Clauser to talk about truth telling, good hiring, and what happens when companies optimize for speed and margin while ignoring training, retention, and the human reality of autism services delivered in a family’s home.

We dig into the hidden costs of turnover in applied behavior analysis: paid onboarding time, unstaffed cases, added BCBA supervision load, inconsistent sessions, and the reputational damage that follows. From there we get into the messy “soup” leaders actually face, balancing living wages, competitive market pay, and insurance reimbursement rates, plus the pressure to keep profit margins high. We also challenge the industry’s obsession with blanket hour recommendations and talk about what it means to “prescribe” ABA therapy with real clinical reasoning and empirical humility.

Then we shift into what to do about it. Holli breaks down how to reduce silos between clinical leadership and talent teams through visibility, feedback loops, and accountability, and why “vibe check” interviews quietly bake bias into your hiring. You’ll hear a practical interview question you can steal, simple ways to create belonging through specific reinforcement, and a powerful reminder that protocols are for people, not the other way around. We also cover BCBA burnout and realistic career pivots, plus Holli’s personal diagnostic journey and what it taught her about communication, systems, and support.

If you care about ethical ABA, RBT retention, sustainable growth, and better outcomes for kids and families, hit subscribe, share this with a leader on your team, and leave a review so more clinicians can find the conversation.

ABA on Tap is proud to present Holli Beth Clauser (Part 1 of 2):

Grab a comfortable seat and a tasty libation. There is a lot of introspection to be had in this pour.

Your turnover number might look like a business problem, but it’s really a human systems problem. We sit down with Holly Beth Clauser to unpack why ABA organizations keep bleeding great RBTs, why families lose trust when staffing churn never stops, and what changes actually improve recruitment, onboarding, and retention without burning people out.

We start with Holli’s origin story and how her frontline experience shaped the way she thinks about the workforce. From there, we get practical about the gaps between clinical work, scheduling, HR, and executives. We talk about SOPs and metrics as a shared language, but we keep coming back to the part most dashboards miss: the context behind the number. Cancellations, inconsistent hours, and “culture” issues rarely come from one person being lazy. They’re usually signals that the environment isn’t reinforcing the right behaviors.

Then we go straight at the hiring process. Overselling roles, overpromising hours, and avoiding hard conversations about aggression, travel, cancellations, and documentation creates the exact churn everyone complains about later. Holly shares how she interviews for boundaries and triggers, why function should guide HR responses, and why practical de-escalation and self-regulation training often matters more in the first 60 days than jargon-heavy onboarding.

If you care about treatment continuity, staff wellbeing, and sustainable ABA services, hit play, share this with a leader in your orbit, and subscribe so you don’t miss Part 2. After you listen, what’s one change you’d make to improve RBT retention at your organization? Holli Beth Clauser will guide you in this episode.

  • Humanistic & Affirming Care: Moving away from traditional "mitigation" or "extinction" of sexuality toward approaches focused on self-determination, sexual access, and gender affirmation.
  • Navigating Taboos: Real talk on the "good, the bad, and the ugly" history of ABA and sexuality, and how to ethically teach consent and education to neurodivergent populations.
  • Sensate Focus & Practical Tools: A look at how behavior analysts can use clinical rigor to help clients achieve meaningful relational outcomes.

Whether you’re a BCBA looking to expand your scope of practice or just curious about how behavior science applies to the most human of narratives, this episode delivers science-backed insights with the signature ABA on Tap humor and practicality.

*This episode is marked 'Explicit' simply due to the topic and themes discussed.

(Part 2 of 2) Grab a seat and pour yourself a cold one! In this episode, Mike and Dan are cracking open the white paper from Optum, titled "Low Hours, High Impact".

For years, the "more is better" 40-hour-a-week model has been the industry standard, but the data is starting to tell a different story. We’re diving deep into the science and the shift toward Value-Based Care, exploring how focused, high-quality interventions can sometimes move the needle further than pure volume.

In this "pour," we’re serving up:

  • The 40-Hour Hangover: Why the "intensive" model might not always be the most effective for every learner, especially the little ones.
  • Efficiency on Tap: Breaking down Optum’s findings on how lower-intensity, high-precision services can drive meaningful clinical outcomes.
  • The Payer’s Perspective: A look at how major payers like Optum are redefining "Medical Necessity" and what that means for your clinic's billing and documentation in 2026.
  • Quality over Quantity: How to advocate for the right amount of hours without sacrificing progress or burning out your RBTs.

Whether you're a BCBA navigating authorization battles or a business owner looking at the future of ABA funding, this episode delivers the straight talk you need—minus the boring jargon.

Tune in, drink up, and always analyze responsibly.

Pull up a chair and pour yourself a cold one! In this episode of ABA on Tap, hosts Mike Rubio and Dan Lowery sit down with the powerhouse of Precision Teaching herself, Dr. Kerri Milyko, BCBA-D, LBA.

Dr. Milyko isn't just an expert in the field; she’s a pioneer in instructional design and evidence-based curriculum development. • Modernizing ABA: A look at her work with CentralReach in creating digital, integrated curricula that actually work in the real world.
  • Systems & Leadership: How to balance clinical priorities with effective leadership to improve both staff engagement and client outcomes.
  • Backyard Tinkering: We get to know the "human" side of the BCBA-D, from her love of sci-fi novels and true crime to the perfect wine and butter pairing.

  • AI in Action: We’ll explore the AI-powered features of MentraTrack, such as the SMART Goal Generator and Assessment Tool, and discuss how technology can make supervision more personalized and effective. Kamila offers a glimpse into how these innovations help supervisors focus on coaching rather than compliance.

ABA on Tap is so proud to spend some time with the illustrious Portia James. (Part 2 of 2)

As a visionary, a powerhouse of a leader, and a pioneer for women and people of color in her field, Portia James has been shaking conference room tables for nearly two decades. She is one of few Behavior Analysts to have been featured in both Forbes and Harvard Business Review.

Portia is a sought-after Board Certified Behavior Analyst and Organizational Behavior Management specialist who helps black Behavior Analysts launch and scale companies that thrive. As the founder and CEO of Behavior Genius, she has served hundreds of staff and families impacted by Autism.

Portia is a wife to an MMA fighter (of course she is!) and mother of 3 dynamic children, a travel junkie, and a red wine enthusiast. Portia serves up a flight of bold and complex flavors. Sip this one slowly and carefully. Don't forget to swirl, take in the bouquet, and always analyze responsibly.

Part 2 of 2

ABA on Tap is proud to spend some time with Maggie Haraburda, founder and director of Unfurling Littles, a unique treatment center combining ABA with best practices in Early Childhood Education.

Neurodiversity Affirming and rooted in compassionate care; this center takes an approach to supporting children of all neurotypes that is play-based and child-led. Unfurling Littles was created out of a desire to do better for neurodivergent children and create a model of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) that is not implicated in causing harm. Maggie believes that "The only way to move forward, is to look back with open eyes. We are a small Autistic owned company and will stay that way. We are not your average agency and we don't intend to be, we are just a group of humans trying to help other humans. "

Given recent concerns and criticisms of ABA as presented by members of the neurodivergent community, Maggie promotes an important message of truly collaborative treatment.

This is smooth and easy brew. Pour heavy, pour lots and always analyze responsibly.

ABA on Tap has discussed the ever ubiquitous 'Do This!' as a discriminative stimulus. And of course, once the child imitates correctly, you say "GOOD JOB!" as the standard, overly used and potentially ineffective consequence, dare we say 'reinforcement.'

In this episode, Mike and Dan brew over an article from Dr. Becky Kennedy (see link below). Dr. Becky advises parents to reconsider the use of 'good job' as a response to indicate satisfaction with a child's behavior. She provides great insight that is applicable to any parent and child dynamic, as well any RBT looking to differentiate their vocal responses toward positive and informative reinforcement. This brew is light, easy, and refreshing--pour, pour more and enjoy.

And always analyze responsibly.

In this episode we are excited to have a discussion with Kim Warma, the President of Pro-ACT, Inc. Pro-ACT is a widely used crisis management curriculum that is implemented in various settings, from schools, to hospitals, to group homes/residential facilities, and many more. Dan and Mike have experience utilizing the Pro-ACT curriculum, with Dan training the principals for over 10 years for multiple ABA companies, and can both personally vouch for its value with increasing safety and improving company culture.

Under continuous development since 1975, Pro-ACT has evolved over the past 50 years concurrent with the focus on increasing Civil Rights for all marginalized communities to become the pinnacle training for crisis management, focusing on maintaining dignity and respect for the people that we serve.

Mike and Dan discuss with Kim how we can all work to manage challenging behaviors safely while respecting the people that we serve. Kim poses the question repeatedly, 'Whose needs are we meeting?,' highlighting how we often lose sight of the client needs, in favor of staff needs, when they become aggressive or uncooperative.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy this unique brew safely. When you're done please visit www.proacttraining.com to check out their services and curriculum.

AI has been injected into every aspect of our lives and its been a fast and furious deployment. While the speed of the technology is enticing, it quickly raises questions about the individuality and client specificity of AI output, especially for essential artifacts like medical notes. While medical notes are a well-known nightmare to ABA providers---lengthy, confusing, seemingly meant to confound and confuse, and clearly installed to defer payment wherever possible--they also serve a very important purpose for clinicians, who truly use them to document procedure, protocol and progress. Enter Michael Gao from Alpaca Health. He joins ABA on Tap to explain his solution and innovation. Despite Mike and Dan's initial skepticism, Michael elucidates his product and presents a convincing stance on its advantages and specificity to helping ABA professionals.

This is a light, refreshing and prospectively thirst quenching brew so enjoy a couple if you must. So keep running those sessions, take good data, consider AI for your notes, and always analyze responsibly.

These days, there is no shortage of controversy over ABA treatment. The neurodivergent community, at least specific outspoken members within, often make general claims about ABA, calling it 'evil' and 'abusive.' Experienced and devoted practitioners beg to differ. Enter Jennifer Fitzpatrick and her efforts in organizing and successfully hosting the inaugural CPABA Conference for 2024. Her intent was to bring together professionals from both sides of the discussion to posit the role of ABA in medical treatment, specifically for autistic individuals. This was recorded prior to the conference, but publication held till now.

This is definitely an imperial oatmeal stout with robust notes of coffee and chocolate--a lot to take in and digest. Pour heavy, drink slowly, and always analyze responsibly.

In this brewing session, despite a wealth of choices, Dan and Mike focus on the basic ingredients in looking at a medical model in comparison to a social model. As behavior analysts, it's easy to see the stakeholder as the principal agent for change, and overlook our impetus for changing behavior, the surrounding environment. Models of disability take this as their basic kernel for debate. As is the final resolution in most binary discussions, Mike and Dan agree that it's not one model over the other, it's both models working in collaboration. This session delineates the 'pros' and 'cons' of each model as they relate both past and current perspectives on the notion of disability.

This is a big brew--bold with a lot of flavors to explore. It may preset bitter at first, but please do wait for the finish as it is satisfying. It's been a long day and you need to unwind with a good brew. This is the one for you. Sip slowly, breathe easy and always analyze responsibly.

The terms 'empirically validated' and 'evidence-based' get thrown around a lot, specifically in describing the prospects of any given medically-based treatment. ABA is no stranger to the phrasing and enjoys a prominent place on the list of such treatments--namely the top of the list. This, however, does not mean that treatments without empirical validation may not hold some evidence or use. And to much dismay, empirically validated approaches are not always implemented successfully. In fact, even evidence based approaches can fall short due to human error.

This is part 2 of this dense and tasty brew, Mike and Dan explore the empirical validation of ABA as well as other treatments deemed 'evidence-based' by most research standards. They also take time to examine what it means to not meet such a standard and those concoctions should be consumed, if at all.

This is a stout---dark, bold with some hints of sweetness and a long finish. Take this one slow but pour bountifully, and always analyze responsibly.

ABA on Tap is proud to present a very special, super tasty, full-bodied brew for this episode. It is our honor to host Stephen and April Smith from the 3 Pie Squared--ABA Business Leaders podcast. Dan and Mike were extremely grateful to have appeared as guests on their podcast in November of 2023. Stephen and April cover a variety of topics all under the umbrella of ethically and fiscally sound ABA practice. Their courses and consultation services have proven instrumental to hundreds, if not thousands, of ABA professionals across North America.

You can pour this one over several times for sure. It's cold, a bit bitter, certainly sweet with a lot of clarity. It packs a punch--sip, relax and always analyze responsibly.

Super craft brew for this episode. Dan and Mike take time to interview a parent, Jess, with her own, very unique experience with ASD and ABA intervention. Jess is a sole-provider with two young children, her youngest on the spectrum. She lends her insight and experiences regarding sibling rivalry, managing extended family attitudes about disability and services, as well as making herself available for said services. Jess gives an honest account of her struggles and better yet, provides an encouraging message for parents given her outcomes.

Sip a nice and easy brew in this episode. Cheers to Jess and all hard-working, dedicated parents. Always analyze responsibly.

Continuing with the parenting brew, Dan and Mike lean yet again on a recipe from Jeremy Brown and Autism Parenting Magazine (link below). As was the case with the first two episodes of the season, the article provides a perfect blend of basic ingredients for cool, crisp and balanced parenting. This episode reviews all tips and strategies outlined in the article and expands to parenting in general, acknowledging that parents with autistic children may face unique situations well outlined by the author.

An easy brew for all to enjoy--crisp, clean and refreshing. Always analyze responsibly.

Jeremy Brown, author of "11 Things Not To Do With An Autistic Child," an insightful article easily found online, provides so much to contemplate. that Dan and Mike pulled a second brew from his basic ingredients. To be honest, they simply take ingredients 6-11 from the list for this particular concoction. ABA on Tap is thankful for the author's parenting insight and uses an ABA filter to continue exploring the 'Do' aspect, while honoring the parenting gems in the article.

This is a light and refreshing blend, 'thanks' to Jeremy Brown and his parenting wisdom. So get cozy, help yourself to a pour, and always analyze responsibly.

Welcome to Season 5 of ABA on Tap! In an effort to bring more support directly to parents, as well as ABA professionals, Mike and Dan kick off the season with an article review (link below). Right in line with the objective, an article from a parenting magazine about 'what not to do' with autistic children is reviewed for this brew. As has been the recipe on ABA on Tap, whenever Dan and Mike here 'don't', they automatically ponder the 'do' portion of such a recommendation. This episode takes advantage of an excellent resource and article geared toward parents, reviews the highlights, expands the discussion, and varies the possibilities.

ABA is often seen as home-based in terms of its service location. While this may at times extend to the premise of 'community,' the procedures and protocols can appear very similar from place to place. However, just like behavior, the environment can have a substantial influence on how ABA can be practiced and implemented. One particular environment that presents clear constraints to practice is a classroom environment on a school campus. That is to say, there are clear guidelines, rules and expectations that point to one set of acceptable behaviors, with little to no margin of error allowed. Mike and Dan consider Mike's recent experiences going back onto a comprehensive school campus to work with students exhibiting challenging behaviors. While as ABA professionals, our content expertise are ready to create and implement behavior plans to address undesired behavior and promote replacement behaviors, schools can often dictate what said behavior plans should include, creating obstacles and unique problems toward effective collaboration and successful outcomes.

This salty episode is sure to work up a thirst. Prepare yourself with a nice, tall, cool one and enjoy this important discussion on ABA in schools.

Mike and Dan continue to bubble and brew over the challenges in the field of ABA intervention, and specifically the undervalued role of the RBT. They provide impressions and personal tales regarding their own professional transition from possibly the best reimbursement rates in the history of ABA intervention to a new outfit where said rates will be slashed by 60% and now match the rest of the field. Considering the premise that an RBT can make a more consistent and predictable living working at a fast food restaurant, ABA on Tap continues to examine and explore the role of private equity, insurance companies and behavior analysts in creating and sustaining this current crisis.

Private equity has entered the ABA services game with great fervor, making a tremendous impact on the field as a whole. In this episode, Mike and Dan take a close look at some 'crisis' elements created by the infusion of private equity and an aim to generate revenue, at times at the expense of the quality of services and client outcomes. At the same time, it can be discerned that ABA practitioners had developed some less than desirable habits prior to private equity, but certainly exacerbated now by the focus on fiscal health over developmental integrity. Moreover, while one would expect private equity to help make services more accessible, this episode also explores the tendency for private equity to turn a profit, then take the money and run, leaving clients and professionals alike with no recourse.

This brew delivers a lot of different flavors and aromas, so be prepared. As always, we promise a smooth finish to wrap up this topic and hint at a continuation episode, as their is much to explore and reconcile within this idea of 'ABA in Crisis.'

Continuity of quality service might be one of the most important aspects of treatment with successful outcomes. Quality can refer to a number of variables including a strong rapport between client (and family) and clinicians, built over time with a steady progression of engaging and reinforcing sessions. While case managers are part of this quality service, it is inevitably the registered behavior technicians (RBTs) who share the most time and encounters with client and family. often in the family home. Hence, the reality of turnover of staff, or perhaps the necessity for 'time-off,' can create a semblance of discontinuity in service all on its own. In this episode, Dan and Mike revisit a 'company line' oft used to promote parameters like 'sub' clinicians when assigned staff is unavailable for a session and client as usual--the RBT is 'a service, not a person.' All the while, Mike splits time between being a 'sub' of sorts himself, caring for his 2-year-old while 'mama' is away, as Dan and he analyze the pros and cons of seeing the RBT as a service, and not a person.

Lots to analyze in this tasty brew--a hint of bitterness, perhaps a bit sour at times, but it promises a smooth finish. Enjoy all the layers, and always analyze responsibly.

From vertically-oriented wall schedules to PECS to token and choice boards--ABA practitioners love their so-called 'visuals'. In this brewing session, Mike and Dan dissect the idea of these strange technologies to understand what is meant by 'visual,' especially if all parties involved are 'sighted' individuals. Taking the ideas of joint attention and naturalistic strategies, Dan and Mike are able to boil it down to the difference between what can be easily accessed visually in the environment, versus more artificially driven, icon-based, laminated squares.

So, grab your favorite libation, turn off the laminator (as its jammed and you're out of laminating sheets anyway), and take a look all around, as you enjoy this illuminating pour of ABA on Tap. And of course, always analyze responsibly.

In observation of Autism Acceptance and Awareness Month, Mike and Dan examine a very poignant and sharp criticism of ABA intervention strategies (link is below). Reviewed exactly as published on the website 'autisticscienceperson.com,' the current brew integrates several points of disapproval, as written by an author that identifies as autistic. While ABA on Tap welcomes a deep analysis of ABA itself and has entertained several detractors before, this particular point of contention presents a bit differently. Mike and Dan are able to diligently identify validity in the author's concern, and more importantly delineate and establish the notion of misuse of ABA, rather than accept the premise of ABA as an inherently abusive, philosophy of the science of both human, and non-human, animal behavior.

So, grab a nice, tall, chilled glass and pour slowly. This one begins with some bitter notes up front but, as usual, Mike and Dan are able to guarantee a smooth finish. Enjoy and always analyze responsibly.

Beginning with one of the most foundational ingredients available for this brew, Mike and Dan lean on hearty handfuls of Diana Baumrind's nominal research on parenting styles from back in the 1960s. Fresh off a healthy pour on 'Parent Education,' it makes perfect sense for the behavioral brew to examine styles of parenting. Many new flavors and 'hints' of different aromas have surfaced over the years---including terms like 'collaborative parenting', or the seemingly harsher but likely misconstrued 'commando parenting.' At the end of the day, Mike and Dan make a case for the basic four styles--authoritarian, authoritative, permissive and negligent--as first outlined by Baumrind, then renovated by Macoby and Martin in the 1980s. Research on parenting styles is robust and reliable, and a very useful tool in effective parent education on how to best employ ABA procedures and strategies. Be aware, this is a very tall pour, much more than a pint. But it's classic, cold and very refreshing--ENJOY!

In considering traditional approaches to ABA intervention and the importance of imitation as a key building block in learning, you have probably heard the directive 'Do This' as an essential part of so-called non-verbal imitation programs. In this episode, Mike and Dan take some time to examine the premise of non-verbal imitation, its role in more traditional approaches as well as available adaptations to take this practice from  the 'lab to living room.' Using the procedures as outlined in published research, this brew encourages an update to these imitation procedures toward a more child-directed, play-based feel and essence. So, 'do this'---sit back, relax and enjoy this refreshing, illuminating pour of ABA on Tap.

For this brew, Dan and Mike take time to incorporate some recent events with policing and the challenges faced by said institutions in providing training and support. Given current discussions and criticism of ABA methods and treatment, your hosts draw comparisons and parallels between the ideas of ABA intervention and policing as it relates to behavior management to  preserve an acceptable 'peace' in the process, but perhaps more importantly, the goal of protecting and serving. Using the model of parenting styles to create a connection between the levels of authoritarianism appropriate to either endeavor, Dan and Mike elaborate on ideas to promote a less authoritarian and more authoritative tone overall. The discussion is rich in philosophical and scientific premises all the same, resulting in a stout, frothy and very satisfying libation. Enjoy! And always analyze responsibly.

Parents are an integral part of any successful ABA-based intervention protocol. The simple fact is, given a least restrictive level of services, parents should be enjoying a much greater amount of time with their children than the ABA provider is spending. Historically, this has seen a very necessary and natural evolution, moving from the idea of parent 'training' in ABA methods, to the more modern inception discussed here--parent education about ABA principles as they are actively included in all aspects of so-called intervention. More importantly, a constant flow of information on a variety of techniques, strategies and approaches, promoting a variety of actively desired contingencies, all supporting socially-significant behavior, should be ever present. All this is discussed in this installment of ABA on Tap.

Sit back and enjoy--and feel grateful for parents all around who strive to offer their children the best available in all aspects of life. Cheers!

ABA has essentially become synonymous with treatment of ASD, and medically speaking, nothing else despite a wide-array of possibilities. Insurance mandates have now existed in many states across the United States for 10 or more years, but are specific to ABA as a recommended treatment for ASD. In this episode, Mike and Dan guide us through the idea of 're-specialization' for the ABA field, toward greater utility. Specifically, as inspired by Patrick Friman's 2010 publication on bringing ABA to the mainstream, expanding the utility of applied behavior analysis into a primary care role, while preserving and expanding  our current expertise, serve as the main ingredients for this delightfully informative and prospectively delicious brew.

What goes up must come down--after a two-part series on the idea of an 'escalation cycle,,' Dan and Mike could only follow up with a discussion on de-escalation. In this follow-up episode, Dan and Mike continue to utilize the notion of 'crisis' or 'assaultive' behavior and its management as a means to better understand and elucidate strategies for addressing day-to-day challenging behavior. While the behavior being emitted by the client or child is often the focus of intervention, perhaps a more important variable is the behaviors or stimuli active around that person and in their environment. Dan and Mike work to explain the key aspects of the de-escalation range of the full cycle and more importantly discuss what not to do as well as what to enact as a parent or professional working to help an individual come back down to baseline.

The brew continues in Joint Attention Part II. Mike and Dan review research on the correlation between joint attention, imitation, language development (verbal/vocal behavior) and play. From this, they focus on a specific research-based method designed to promote joint attention--namely following a point (both proximal and distal) as well as gaze shift, then leading others with point and gaze shift. The idea of joint attention as a constant mode of presentation, along with contingent imitation and linguistic mapping, in creating a dynamic, child-directed, play-based environment is elaborated. This allows for more and more adult-directed instruction as needed toward specific targets and goals, like imitation, while maintaining the most important motivating operation--play.

Better late than never, Mike and Dan kick off the 3rd season of ABA on Tap. Thank you all out there for your continued support and listenership.

In an effort to advance the 'lab to living room' approach, Mike and Dan give a historical account of their current practices in early intervention. Given that these particular programs take a 'preventative' edge in their purpose and objective, the idea of blending ABA technologies and methodologies with best practices in Early Childhood Education takes the forefront. Young children in these early intervention programs, at least in this case, are not diagnosed with any condition, just identified as 'at-risk'. Without careful and considerate pause from professionals, these children might receive traditional, standard ABA treatment otherwise cultivated and specified for children on the spectrum. This situation is examined closely as the impetus to innovate and progress the idea of ABA and what it looks like in planning, practice and further data collection. Part I will provide a more personal and historical account of the references, experiences and concepts that led to joint attention as an important correlate to imitation, but lacking focused examination or useful implementation as an important aspect of programming thus far.

Sit back, relax and always analyze responsibly.

Now they explore current and prospective efforts with psychiatric care, use of medication from said psychiatric care, as well as future efforts in primary medical care, an 'off-label' use of ABA, per the current treatment model. ABA provision and related data could easily provide a wealth of information to treatment with medication, addressing side-effect management and possible enhancement of treatment effects, given fidelity to both medication and ABA treatments. So, take  your recommended dose of ABA on Tap in this ameliorating episode, preferably with a full glass of water, or any other reasonable libation. And always analyze responsibly.

Behavior encompasses a wide range of activity from talking, to moving around to just about anything that makes us animate as human animals. Yet ABA is often quickly boiled down to the 'bad behavior' science, addressing the tantrums, excessive crying, dropping to the ground, self-injurious behavior, etc. This general overview can be so pervasive that we can easily forget the need for other professionals to get a child to sit down and attend, both super important learning behaviors, not misbehaviors, that ABA attends to readily. Hence, there is an active collaboration that should occur across these expansive so-called 'transdisciplinary teams,' whether educationally or medically based, to ensure the child in the middle is getting everyone's best, and in well-choreographed orchestration that supplements and complements, avoiding internal contradictions--that's a tall order. An order that should be easily filled no less. In this episode, Mike and Dan open up the conversation on collaborative treatment, discussing services like SLP (speech/language) and OT (occupational therapy) that are often active for a child along with ABA. They also begin to discuss more mainstream applications of ABA in areas like psychiatry and the prospective and elusive behavioral pediatrics, both topics that will be explored in greater detail in Part II of this episode on collaborative treatment. Sit back, relax, and drink this one in, as a refill awaits you. Cheers--always analyze responsibly.

"Let's make some visuals" or "that child would benefit from sensory" are two commonly heard phrases in ABA intervention yet they sound strange and overall lack meaning. In this episode, Mike and Dan take time to explore technologies like 'sensory,' 'visuals', social stories, tangible/edible reinforcement and more. These technologies were adapted with good intent, no doubt, but over the years have lost their power and purpose due to user error or the like. Many may be part of outdated premises in ASD or may be suppositions that have been outright debunked and further, corrected in theory, but not yet in practice. So sit back, reflect on our strange habits in ABA, and let's find ways to improve our practice. Always analyze responsibly.

Ready to learn more and engage in philosophic doubt, Mike and Dan take on a recent opinion published by the well-known education writer, Alfie Kohn. Kohn lends an eloquent criticism of ABA, pointing to recent meta-analyses that aim to question, if not eliminate, any socially significant effects and benefits of ABA-based interventions, as used with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder, for example. Kohn's arguments are carefully examined, credited where deserving, and aptly corrected in an effort to preserve their value, while rectifying errors in terms. That said, ABA has a wealth of empirical research and validation highlighting its effectiveness and value. However its implementation, like any other active system, can always benefit from examination, improvement and evolution toward a perpetually stronger ethical integrity. Mike and Dan offer thoughts, insights and discussion to posit ABA, its current strengths and future directions.

ABA on Tap is committed to providing you with a clean 'pour' on this philosophy of a science in practice, ABA, and the facts surrounding its active implementation given our daily study and professional experience. We invite Alfie Kohn to join us and discuss his views further on a future episode and we value his prospective effort in listening and exchanging knowledge. His article, as discussed in this episode, can be found at https://www.alfiekohn.org/blogs/autism/.

The brew continues to mature as Mike and Dan evolve the discussion naturally into the next flavor, antecedent based strategies. Given ABA has been driven largely by a consequence base, the discussion leads into how to prepare for certain behaviors ahead of time, knowing they are actively being emitted. The idea becomes not to preempt or avoid the behavior, but to prepare for it in terms of learning potential toward the next time the same circumstance arises. In this manner, consequence approaches are fortified, given the effort to redirect the behavior prior to emission as well as prepare for the consequence base. Enjoy! And always analyze responsibly.

Welcome to Season 2 of ABA on Tap--Happy New Year! Mike and Dan jump right back in where they left off. Following the natural progression and discussion thus far, they happen upon differential reinforcement in order to promote a more multivariate application of ABA than seems the norm. Given the perpetuation of 3-part contingencies, the so-called ABCs of behavior, ABA in practice is often an amalgam of single, linear contingencies as opposed to a dynamic evocation of many behaviors subject to shaping and differential reinforcement in a more naturalized environment. As always, the quest from lab to living room continues. Cheers! And always analyze responsibly.

After entertaining Chloe's criticisms and doing so seriously, Dan and Mike take a chance to explore ABA clichés--all those little overused misconceptions and stereotypes we hear out in our daily work about why ABA doesn't work. All the while, ABA touts empirical validation. How do we reconcile  between what is proven and the possibility of user-error--how does ABA work for many and yet have such a vocal opposition? What are the grievances and which are legitimate? Which grievances are more based on misunderstanding and user-error? Sit back, relax and sip on something good as you imbibe this episode.

While ABA rightfully touts empirical validation, social validity may not always reflect as strongly. One need not go further than Google to find a plethora of harsh criticism against ABA. Such a vocal critic is found in Chloe Everett and her TEDTalk entitled "The Problem with Applied Behavior Analysis" (https://youtu.be/pCqEb0aG7tg). Chloe is a well-spoken young woman who shares her experience as a 'patient' of ABA intervention given her diagnostic experience. In her talk, Chloe gives honest and useful criticism but also lends a number of misconceptions that warrant discussion, correction and ultimately, resolution. In what promises to be the first of many episodes dedicated to criticisms of ABA, we give Chloe the floor first and explore and explain her concerns. Stay tuned for Part II of episdoe 7, where we further explore her criticism and offer solutions for future practice, in addition to our humble corrections of some of the more egregious claims relayed in her talk.

So as we contemplate re-opening our ABA services here in California--not all providers stopped in-home service--Dan and Mike lend some insight in an effort to optimize ABA services as well as the safety of the environments in which they are delivered. So, sit back in your 6-foot radius (or otherwise wear a face covering), and enjoy a nice pour of ABA on Tap. Always analyze responsibly--cheers!

Quarantine, or perhaps more accurately stated 'shelter in place,' has certainly put a new spin on our daily lives, to phrase it mildly. We find ourselves taking stock and placing new value on every day stimuli. In this episode, Mike and Dan work to redefine 'screen time' for parents now contending with school content, as well as for professionals considering aspects of stimulus control and socialization on this so-called 'social-media' platform. Where many weeks ago we clamored to limit screen time, we now find ourselves seeking better ways to apply it, if not downright enforce it--who knew?! As always, the discussion provides as many new questions as prospective and absolute answers, but concludes with some practical concepts and suggestions that are easy to consume. Stay safe, stay well and always analyze responsibly. Cheers!

ABA on Tap is recorded live in front of a virtual studio audience.
Please bear with us during shelter in place as we record this audio over a video conference--and sometimes you can hear it ; )*

In only their second published episode, Mike Rubio and Daniel Lowery are compelled to deal with quarantine and the current COVID-19 circumstance as they keep their distance and connect remotely. They posit many topics for discussion and consideration, covering new 'levels of service' in ABA during this era of social distancing, as well as suggesting many themes for future dialogue. Dan and Mike invite you to post your questions and comments. This is but the beginning of many discussions on what promises to be an important shift in ABA services. Though temporary, the current 'shelter in place' order across many states is creating a motivating operation for pros and parents alike, to redefine ABA practice and implementation. Welcome to Q-ABA. Let's make good use of the time and learn something together. Cheers! Always analyze responsibly...and for now, do so at least 6-feet apart. Be well and stay safe out there.

Mike and Dan take you back to the beginning of ABA on Tap to share a studio out-take not published at the time of production. After some review, they have decided the information in this previously unreleased episode needs to be heard. In "More than MORE", a thorough discussion regarding the use of some 'starter' verbal behaviors like signing 'more', is presented. While helpful and exciting, such simple signs can often be overused and become overgeneralized, hindering progress in vocal and verbal behavior instead  of promoting it. As always your comments and questions are encouraged. Please find us on Facebook and connect. Always analyze responsibly--cheers!
