After nearly a year away from the mic, Iâm back... with a story I never thought Iâd be telling.
On May 13, I had cervical disc replacement surgery at C6-C7. In this episode, Iâm opening up about what led me to that decision, how the recovery process has really felt, and what itâs been like returning to the stage, the audition room, and my full-time job after surgery.

Guess who's baaaaaaaaack.
Trevor James is a bi-coastal actor currently living in Los Angeles. Theatre credits include: Tony in the international production of West Side Story in Tokyo, Japan, Jack in Into the Woods at The Guthrie, Sunday in the Park with George at Pasadena Playhouse, Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys at Theatre Aspen, the pre-Broadway World Premiere production of The Karate Kid the Musical, Jack Kelly in Disneyâs Newsies at RMTC, and several others. Next up, Trevor will be playing Barry Mann in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at La Mirada starting next month. On screen, Trevor has appeared on the FOX Network series, Prodigal Son, as well as on the AppleTV+ limited series, WeCrashed, starring Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto. Trevor has written two short films that have been produced, The God Can and Peteâs Peak (which he also directed), that have both gone on to win awards at several film festivals across the country. Recently, Trevor wrapped a feature film (called Et Tu) in a major role alongside Lou Diamond Phillips and Malcolm McDowell â more to come on that one soon! Trevor is represented by HCKR Agency and holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Texas State University.

Special guest Ashley Vankirk shares her insights into the theatre community of Orlando, where she now calls home!
Originally from California, Ashley got her BFA in Musical Theatre from AMDA in 2018 then moved to Orlando that August to work at Disney World. She was hoping sheâd open some doors to work in entertainment at the theme parks for a bit but ended up staying for the theatre community. Some of her notable credits and jobs have been the Caponeâs Dinner Show, Legoland FL entertainment for multiple special events, Seaworld entertainment (through 3rd party -Odd-O-Ts entertainment), the Winter Park Playhouse Festival of New Musicals, Orlando Fringe. Plus many of the regional/community theatres in the area.

That's all Joriah KwamĂŠ.
And believe it or not, it wasn't part of a musical. In fact, it was written for a competition helmed by Mean Girls star Taylor Louderman.

Trevor James Berger is a bi-coastal actor out of Los Angeles and New York. He earned his BFA in Musical Theatre from Texas State University, graduating in 2018, and has since appeared on stage and screen across the globe. He starred as Tony in the international production of West Side Story (2019) in Tokyo, Japan at the brand new, innovative IHI Stage Around Tokyo â which features a 360-degree stage that surrounds a 1,400-seat audience section that rotates on a turntable to follow the action. Other favorite theatrical credits include Jack Kelly in Newsies (RMTC), Franklin Shepard in Merrily We Roll Along (4Leaf), and Joey, Frankie Valli u/s and vocal double in Jersey Boys (Stages St. Louis). Trevor has also appeared on screen as Leonard in the season 1 finale of Prodigal Son FOX, and will be appearing in 2022 in the AppleTV+ limited series, WeCrashed, starring and executive produced by Anne Hathaway and Jared Leto. Trevor made his writing debut with his short film, The God Can, currently out on the festival circuit, appearing in festivals such as the Los Angeles Television, Script, and Film Festival, the California International Shorts Festival, Salty Earth Film Festival, and the Marina Del Rey Film Festival. Eleri Ward is an actor, singer, musician, and songwriter who loves to bring her own perspective to whatever work is before her. Originally from Chicago, Eleri studied Musical Theater at The Chicago Academy for the Arts as a high school student. She then studied Songwriting for a year at Berklee College of Music only to transfer to The Boston Conservatory where she graduated with a BFA in Musical Theater with an emphasis in Songwriting. Since then she has been forging her path in the Theater, hitting the audition scene in NYC while making her own pop music as well as transforming Sondheim songs into indie folk arrangements under the name SUF/SOND. Huguley is a New York based actor, singer, entrepreneur, creative, & educator originally born and raised in Washington, D.C. Prior to the Covid-19 crisis, Kaisha was preparing to take the stage as Mama Euralie in Once on This Island in Concert at 54 Below. She was also preparing to join the ensemble (Pat/Trish U/S) in the cast of Kinky Boots at Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Most recently, Kaisha performed in Miracle on 34th Street and The Full Monty (Argyle Theatre). Meghan Gratzer is a musical theater actress born and raised in Queens, NY! After graduating from LIU Post with a BFA in Musical Theater, she booked her dream role of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at a regional theater. Her Cairn Terrier, Rudy, was even hired as Toto! Meghan spent 2017-2019 traveling the world with Royal Caribbean. First, she spent a year on the Independence of the Seas playing the role of Frenchy in Grease & then booked Penny in RCCLâs takeout cast of Hairspray on their brand new ship, Symphony of the Seas. Meghan was just recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer at the age of 26 and has gone public with her battle to help raise awareness. Being a performer, our appearance is part of our livelihood. She touches on important topics, such as hair loss, and is educating her followers on what not to say to someone going through a cancer diagnosis!

Gerianne PÊrez made her Broadway debut as Kathy in Broadway's first a cappella musical, In Transit, at the Circle in the Square Theatre. With a book, music and lyrics by Academy Award winner Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Frozen), James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth, and vocal arrangements by Deke Sharon (Pitch Perfect), In Transit was directed and choreographed by three-time Tony Award winner, Kathleen Marshall. Gerianne has also been seen performing roles in Guys and Dolls, Grease, In the Heights, and Newsies. She also opened and closed the First National Tour of the critically acclaimed musical Waitress, with music by Grammy nominee, Sara Bareilles, and direction by Tony Award winner, Diane Paulus.  Gerianne has been praised by critics for her sultry vocals and was hailed by the New York Times as "an impressive singer...seemingly effortless." Her voice can be heard on the tracks of "Fever," "Locked out of Heaven," and "Hallelujah" on the Vocalosity cast album, as well as the entirety of the Original Broadway Cast album of In Transit. She has appeared on stages from New York City to Shanghai, and venues including 54 Below, Joe's Pub, Town Hall, the Beacon Theater, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. She is a proud graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

Samantha Rios is an actor and musician originally from Arlington, VA. She is currently a student at The University of Michigan studying Musical Theatre. In 2015, Samantha starred in Telemundoâs Reality TV Singing Competition, âLa Voz Kidsâ as well as Season 13 of NBCâs âThe Voice.â Since then, Samantha has sung backup for Sara Bareilles, Lin Manuel Miranda, and Christopher Jackson. Leo Ash Evens is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a BFA in Acting / Musical Theatre. Co-Owner/Director of Musical Theater College Auditions (MTCA) and entering his fourteenth year of expert preparation for musical theatre and acting college auditions, Leo balances and integrates a diversity of artistic disciplines, drawing from years of professional experience as an actor, voiceover artist, and educator. Tee Boyich is a broadway actress known for her historic debut in the Original Broadway Cast of âMean Girls the Musicalâ as the standby for Cady Heron, Gretchen, Janis, and Adult Women (Mrs. Heron, Mrs. George, Ms. Norbury) at the August Wilson theatre. She is also known for her studio recording work. She recorded the viral theme song to the Netflix hit show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. She also provided vocals for various episodes through the series. In September of 2020, two friends Jacob Ben-Shmuel (Book of Mormon) and Alan Blake Bachelor (Blumhouseâs âUncanny Annieâ) found themselves on the journey of a musical podcast lifetime. Cue: One Million Musicals.
What's One Million Musicals, you ask? Well it's podcast with a simple dream: to write and produce one million podcast musicals! Each month, their team of writers, producers and performers from across Broadway, Film and TV create a brand new podcast musical for your ears to enjoy.

Jacob Ben-Shmuel is is the Co-Creator and Showrunner of One Million Musicals, as well as the co-writer and composer of each of its shows, including How to Be Spooky, The Lawman with No Gun, The South Pole Santa Claus, and Lady Jane's Radio Takeover. After graduating from UC Irvine's musical theatre program, Jacob spent two and a half years touring the United States, Canada and Mexico with the hit Broadway show The Book of Mormon, as the Standby for Elder Cunningham. While on the road, his musical Brad Knows Nothing was accepted into the New York Musical Festival's 2018 season. You can hear his voice as a wide variety of characters in One Million Musicals, including most recently Bennie Berstein and Dolf "The Dink" Diggle in Lady Jane's Radio Takeover.

Alan Blake Bachelor is a co-creator of One Million Musicals and has been writing musicals with Jacob since their days at UC Irvine. Their musical, Brad Knows Nothing, was featured at the New York Musical Festival in 2018. Alan and his brother, James, are writers of horror screenplays, one of which became an episode of Blumhouseâs Into the Dark entitled "Uncanny Annie.â

Gabriella Marzetta is an actor, singer, dancer, educator and musician who spent 2019-2020 on the North American National Tour of Waitress as Dawn Louise Pinkett. Currently quarantining  in Chicago for the year, Gabriella spent the last 7 years in New York City attending the prestigious CAP21 Conservatory Program and Industry Practicum Showcase. This led to Gabriella starring in roles regionally such as Jeanie in "Hair" for the 50th Anniversary of the show, Off-Broadway in Pinkalicious, Flight School  and Frankenstein in her years following graduation, most notably playing Ars Nova in the Off Broadway musical Contact High. Prior to and during her higher education training, Gabriella developed and befriended a lifelong vocal disorder called "Muscle Tension Dysphonia", which ultimately led to her interest and passion in vocal pedagogy and health. Since healing, Gabriella is passionate about teaching other artists what their instrument is capable of, using our self perceived weaknesses and traumas as our strengths, all while focusing body/mind/soul awareness, joy and freeing the inner child. JJ Niemann is a New York City-based actor, Broadway performer, choreographer and coach. After growing up in Wilmington, NC, JJ graduated in 2017 with a BFA in Music Theatre from Elon University. Shortly after, he joined the Broadway cast of âThe Book of Mormonâ as a Swing, where he has been performing for a majority of the past three years. Before the pandemic, JJ was in the developmental workshops and the World Premiere of the new musical âBLISS,â which made its debut in February at The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. Most recently, he partook in the online phenomenon "Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical" and performed in its World Premiere virtual benefit concert production. Aside from developmental readings and workshops, JJ has performed regionally at theaters like The Muny, Pittsburgh CLO, Bay Street Theatre, Artpark, and Grandstreet Theatre. Favorite roles include Laurie in âLittle Women,â Drew in âRock of Ages,â Mr. Mistoffelees in âCats,â and Frankie Epps in âParade.â In addition to performing, JJ teaches his own dance classes in the city called Jazzing With JJ, and coaches regularly with The Broadway Collectiveâs programs including Hello Broadway, Gathered, and Prescreen Prep. He's also recently become an avid TikTok creator, reaching over 550,000 followers and 100 million video views with his Broadway and theatre comedy videos. Alyssa Jiwani (she/her) is an actor, director, choreographer, singer, dancer, teacher, and arts administrator from Seattle, WA. Alyssa Jiwani is a current student at New York Universityâs Tisch School of Drama, pursuing a double major in Theatre and Education (BFA Drama). Evan Ruggiero began dancing at the age of five in his hometown studio and by age ten, he was accepted into the famed New Jersey Tap Ensemble. Upon entering his sophomore year at Montclair State University while pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre, Evan was suddenly diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer of the right leg. Enduring nine surgeries in a six-month period in an effort to save the leg, the cancer returned more aggressively than the original diagnosis. He was faced with the ultimate decision of amputation in order to stop the cancer and save his life, as well as undergoing chemotherapy for sixteen months. Eighteen months after the amputation, and only two days after receiving his âpeg-legâ, Evan was tap dancing again. In 2018 he received a Drama Desk Nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, a Chita Rivera Award Nomination for Best Dancer in a Musical, and was awarded a Clive Barnes Award in Theatre for his portrayal of Tom Jones in NYCâs off-broadway hit âBastard Jones.â This past year he was seen performing at Carnegie Hall and at the 90th Oscars. He has performed for many notable individuals such as Ellen Degeneres, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Dr. Jill Biden, Egyptâs sixth and current president, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and most recently performed alongside two-time Grammy winning artist, Jason Mraz. Social media: @Lord_PeglegÂ

There are so many factors, many of them out of your control, that go into whether or not someone is accepted into a musical theatre college program. Host Maggie Bera (Texas State BFA MT '17) addresses the current state of college auditions and dishes her best advice on how to set yourself up for success.
Maggie Bera is a NYC-based actress and proud member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA. Off-Broadway, she originated the role of Ruby in Helen on 86th St. at the Chernuchin Theatre. Regionally, Maggie appeared as Aquata, u/s Ariel in The Little Mermaid and u/s Christine Daae in Phantom at the Fireside Theatre, as Lucy Van Pelt in The World According to Snoopy at Theatre Under The Stars, Les Miserables at Connecticut Repertory Theatre directed by Broadway legend Terrence Mann, and as Wendy in Peter Pan. She has appeared in numerous television, print and radio ads. Maggie is also the founder of the actor lifestyle blog, podcast, and online learning community, Actor Aesthetic.

Ben Crawford has appeared on Broadway as the title role in Phantom of the Opera, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Mr. Salt), the title role in Shrek The Musical, Big Fish (Edward Bloom u/s, Don Price), Les MisÊrables (Javert and Valjean u/s) and On the Twentieth Century (Bruce Granit u/s). He has also starred in over twenty regional productions, including such leading roles as Che in Evita, Starbuck in 110 in the Shade, Luther Billis in South Pacific, Jud Fry in Oklahoma! and Frederick Barrett in Titanic. Kayla Ryan Walsh is a New York-based actor, singer, and dancer. She is originally from Bend, Oregon and received her BFA in Musical Theatre from Otterbein University. She has worked regionally at The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Theatre Aspen, Mill Mountain Theatre, Weathervane Playhouse, Southern Colorado Repertory Theatre and many more. She was an Acting Apprentice at The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, as well as received a Fulbright Scholarship to study Shakespeare at The Globe in London under Philip Bird's mentorship and direction. Recently Kayla acted as producer and performer for an online staged reading of The Revolutionists by Lauren Gunderson, opposite of Kuhoo Verma, with all proceeds being given directly to The ACLU, raising over $1000 from their one-night showing.

Born on Long Island and raised in New Jersey, Abby DePhillips has been lucky enough to always be near Broadway. At 12, she co-created a webshow called Backstage Broadway which allowed her to interview Broadway stars. In 2014, she was crowned Miss TEEN United States, and moved to New York City to further her career in theatre. After assisting concerts, she began working at Broadway Style Guide, and later The X Magazine. She soon began work co-producing the series Pronoun Showdown. After several sold-out shows, Pronoun Showdown was able to begin touring to other cities, as well as continuing performances in New York. As a hardcore Legally Blonde the Musical fan, a career highlight was getting to produce a concert version of the show as a benefit for the Times Up Legal Defense Fund at Feinsteinâs/54 Below. Additionally, just before the shutdown, Abby debuted her new concert series Broadway Breakup Playlist, also at Feinsteinâs/54 Below.Â
In addition to her work in theatre, Abby also writes a blog on her website called The A List. Sheâll also be launching an online store this fall.

Christine Cornish Smith is a New York City based dancer, singer and actor. She was most recently seen in the Original Broadway Cast revival of Kiss Me, Kate!, where she was a featured dancer in the ensemble and covered Lois Lane/Bianca. Christine is most well known for her portrayal of Bombalurina in the OBC revival of CATS, and was also seen in the OBC of My Fair Lady at the Lincoln Center Theater.Â

Kaitlin Hopkins is an award-winning actress, director, and educator and has worked in theater, film and television for over 30 years. In 2009 she created the BFA Musical Theatre program at Texas State University, recently named one of the top 10 musical theatre programs in the nation. As an entrepreneur, she is the Co-Founder of Living Mental Wellness, which is a holistic evidence-based company that offers educational programs to enhance mental wellness for performing artists through an integrated scientific life skills model. In addition, Hopkins is the proud creator and president of Fontus Green Apple Dry Throat Lozenges, in partnership with Ocu-soft, a multi-million dollar pharmaceutical company. Fontus is the official lozenge of Hamilton the musical, and many other Broadway shows and national touring companies, and is the lozenge of choice for many performing artists including Kristin Chenoweth, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson and Julie Andrews.
As an educator, she received the 2016 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching from Texas State University and was recognized by Broadway Dreams Foundation as an innovative voice in education, and one of the 6 top women educators in the performing arts. In 2012, in collaboration with the ProJazz Institute Hopkins created and launched the first musical theater-training program in Chile. Her recent TEDx Talk on the importance of mental wellness education for students, along with her research and curriculum-based mental wellness training program for performing artists at Texas State has garnered international attention.
As an actress her Broadway credits include: Noises Off, Anything Goes with Patti LuPone and originating the role of âMama Whoâ in How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Hopkins has a half dozen cast album credits to her name and has originated multiple roles off-Broadway including: Bat Boy-the Musical for which she received a Drama Desk and Ovation award nominations, Bare: A Pop Opera, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, and Nicky Silverâs Beautiful Child. National tours include originating the roles of âDianeâ in Disneyâs On The Record, and âMargorieâ in Dirty Dancing, and originating the role of âTiffanyâ in the international tour of the John Adam opera I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky directed by Peter Sellars.
Hopkins has appeared in over 50 television shows including Star Trek- Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager, JAG, Law and Order, Law and Order SVU, Law and Order CI, Rescue Me, Spin City and three years on Another World as Dr. Kelsey Harrison. She has appeared in 11 feature films including The Nanny Diaries, Confessions of a Shopaholic, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles and How To Kill Your Neighborâs Dog with Kenneth Branagh.
As a director, writer, producer her production of The World According to Snoopy, which made its world premiere at Texas State, and its regional premiers at Theatre Under The Stars, and Theatre Aspen, has been licensed by Tams Witmark . Other producing credits include producing radio plays and musicals for LA Theatre Works-The Plays the Thing Series and for The Pet Shop (Animal Planet Network) hosted by comedian Andy Kindler. As a director, favorite credits include: The Boch and Harnick Revue To Life!, which she co-conceived with Tony award winner Robert L. Freedman, The Two Orphans by Theresa Rebeck, and Collision Course by Jim Price (The Lark Play Development Center, NY). She is a member of the Playwright and Director's Workshop at The Actors Studio in New York. Kaitlinâs directing credits at Texas State University include: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, RENT, Anything Goes, Urinetown, Hair, All Shook Up, Oklahoma!, The Wild Party, A Little Princess (world premiere), and Bat Boy-The Musical. Her productions at Texas State have been recognized with numerous awards by the Austin Critics' Table Awards.

Ellen Lettrich has been working with young musical theatre and acting performers for almost 29 years, first as a high school classroom teacher and theatre director and, after receiving her MS in Speech-Language Pathology, as a medical voice therapist.
Her diverse teaching experiences led her to found Musical Theatre College Auditions (MTCA), a college theatre audition preparation company. Ellen built MTCAâs team of actively working teaching artists who themselves are grads of rigorous theatre training programs such as Juilliard, Yale School of Drama, Carnegie Mellon, the University of Michigan, the Boston Conservatory, and NYU Tisch.
Over the past 20 years, MTCA has prepared hundreds of students for college theatre auditions and yielded exceptional success rates. Through her work with MTCA, Ellen saw how difficult it can be for low-income students and those from underrepresented communities to access the information and financial resources needed to be competitive in the audition process for college-level acting and musical theatre programs.
Ellen founded The Fund for College Auditions to bridge this information and financial gap: to support the expenses that are part of college auditions, to provide fair compensation to experienced, innovative, student-centered teaching artists who can help these students excel artistically, and to subsidize college audition information workshops for underserved high schools and theatre groups.

Elise Melendez is a Chicago-based arts manager, dance educator and nonprofit marketer with a strong commitment to fostering community. Beyond her work with Motivated Movers, Elise continues her commitment to the dance community as managing director of Denman Theatre & Dance Co, a New York based company dedicated to developing hybrid theatrical works using movement/dance as a primary storytelling device.
With a bachelorâs in American Dance Pedagogy from Oklahoma City University and a masterâs in Arts, Entertainment, and Media Management from Columbia College Chicago, Elise has over a decade of experience in arts education and management.

Natalie Malotke is a director, choreographer, independent producer, and teaching artist living in New York City. NYC Casting Director Michael Cassara talks with host Maggie Bera about how professional auditions work in NYC, how actors can take advantage of social media, and how the COVID-19 crisis is changing the theatre industry as we know it.
Michael Cassara, CSA is a Casting Director and Educator in New York City, where he and his team have cast over 400 theatre and film projects since the formation of Michael Cassara Casting in 2003. Joomin made his Broadway debut in The Prom, when he became the only native Korean-male performer to be on Broadway since 1985. Why is the process of finding monologues for auditions so difficult?
For musical theatre actors like you and me, the monologue search can be extremely challenging.
Itâs just not the same as looking for an audition song. Maybe thatâs because weâre used to singing at our auditions⌠and the true theatre nerds inside of us all have a secret database stored away in the back of our brains with thousands and thousands of Broadway songs.
But frankly, Iâve gone to more and more auditions that are now asking for a monologue - in addition to a short cut of a song.
Youâd be surprised at the amount of direct messages and emails and texts asking for help to find a monologue for auditions.
I get it, I do. As an actor, I would love nothing more than for someone to hand me the perfect monologue - one I could do for the next ten years flawlessly, that would get me cast in every show. And for some reason, it is always easier for me to suggest for other actors than it is to think of monologues I can do myself. An audition is based on how other people view us while the choice of monologue is set in how we view ourselves. A successful monologue choice is one where outside perspective matches inner perspective.
Which makes it VERY difficult for a stranger online to recommend a monologue for you! All we can do is name the same five monologues that everybody has done to death, or from the hot new play of the moment, or at least suggest plays that have characters of the same general age/gender - and even then, it might be of the same "type" but not necessarily a good monologue for YOU.
So whether youâre just starting out in the biz or a longtime pro, the search for the perfect monologue never ends. Monologues are frequently used in auditions, coaching sessions, and classes, so itâs important to know how to look and where to begin your search.

Certain productions and theaters are required to have Equity Principal Auditions (EPAs) and Equity Chorus Calls (ECCs). Members of Actor's Equityâ the union for stage actors â can sign up for these auditions starting one week before they occur.
Non-Equity actors are, in fact, more than welcome to attend Equity auditions. Time permitting, there is always a chance they may be seen.

In American theater, summer stock theatre is a theatre that presents stage productions only in the summer.

After pursuing a BFA in Musical Theater and graduating college in the spring of 2017, I lived at home with my family in central New Jersey for two years. I was able to save up money not having to pay for food and rent and just travel in and out of the city for auditions and classes.Â
It made perfect sense for me as an actor.
However, transportation costs added up after a while and my patience started running thin. I needed to be in the city to make it my home.Â

Submitting yourself to a casting director is not a quick and easy way to suddenly get all of the job offers. But it is one part of an effective marketing strategy that takes time, patience and persistence.
If you are ready to get on the radar of key casting directors, and are willing to do what it takes, Iâm here to help.
The fact is, casting directors will call in who they know, and one way to become someone they know is by writing to them. Iâm not suggesting that you bombard them with e-mails (donât do that!) but an e-mail even now and again, especially when you have something interesting to share is going to help you get noticed.Â
Some casting directors read submissions, donât respond, but maybe will file them and look through them if thereâs a particular character type they are looking for. And even if they donât read them- they are likely to still see your name and if youâve written to them a few times, your name will become familiar to them, making them more likely to pay attention when they see a role you are submitted for.
Itâs well known in the marketing world that it takes 7-9 times of you contacting someone directly with your message for them to pay attention⌠This is no different! Submitting your materials is not as simple as just sending a boring, generic e-mail out to all the casting directors you can find. In fact, I would strongly advise AGAINST doing that. So, how do you write to them?

So you didnât get the part.
You did all the work, you chose the perfect outfit, the perfect song, perfect headshot. You picked the perfect    monologue and practiced it forwards, backwards, and sideways. You read the entire script, memorized the vocal score, and watched the film version. You go into the audition and absolutely blow the audition panel away with your effort and enthusiasm. The creative team looked absolutely thrilled and about ready to hand you the roleâŚ
And then. Radio silence.
Maybe you got down to final callbacks for a show, and the creative team decided to give that specific role to someone else. Another actor. How many of you are all too familiar with that dreaded phrase, âwe decided to go a different directionâŚâ???
Maybe Broadway World or Playbill just announced the cast for the show you were in auditions for⌠and your heart feels like itâs been torn into a billion pieces.
Maybe youâre watching your friends, your peers, your classmates book their dream shows and jobs⌠and youâre wondering when is that going happen for me? Or even better⌠WILL it ever happen to me?

Actors Access is an online platform that allows actors to maintain profiles by uploading headshots, updating their resume, adding new skills and attributes, managing performance videos, and more.
Created in 2003, Actors Access functions like a virtual database between casting directors and aspiring actors looking for jobs.
Casting Directors have the option to release Breakdowns to actors and receive submissions directly from them.

A website can be one of the most important marketing tools for a professional actor. Actors can use websites to provide information directly to casting directors in the theatre industry. By updating your site with a headshot, resume, recent news and contact information, creative teams can easily learn more about you and potentially call you in for auditions and callbacks.
Once you design your website and its live, try searching your name on google. Does your website pop up on the first page? Is it the first result? Or way down on the bottom?
If you've noticed that your site isn't the first result that comes up when you search your name, you may be at a disadvantage. We need to make our information as readily available as possible, and if someone can't find your site, they'll quickly move on.
So how do we get the page to come up to the top of Google when someone searches our name?
Search Engine Optimization.
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is a marketing idea focused on growing visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results. According to Moz, "SEO encompasses both the technical and creative elements required to improve rankings, drive traffic, and increase awareness in search engines."
From the words on your page to the way other sites link to you on the web, actors should keep SEO in mind when creating a website. Here are some easy tips to bring your website to the top of Google search!

Audition Update used to be a free crowdsourcing website that served as an outlet for actors to anonymously share important information.
The page was created by Tom Lapke in 2010 with the "sole purpose of helping actors get through their difficult day with a little more ease and information." It is now owned and run by Backstage and is hosted under the Backstage Community forum.
Actors typically flood the site to update and receive information on the status of current auditions and callbacks. They can also write and read reviews on working at a specific theater, ask anonymous questions about the industry, give advice and insight, etc.
Forums include Audition Update, Callback Corner, The Working Actor, Child and Teen Actors, Child and Teen Models, Getting Started, and The Green Room.
