Whale Wars Star and founder of Sea Shepherd, Captain Paul Watson, has been imprisoned since July in Greenland! The anti-whaling hero has applied for political asylum in France as he fights off attempts by Japan to get him extradited to that nation where he could end up behind bars for 15 years. Activists around the world are demanding that Watson be released immediately with protests from Los Angeles to France outside Danish government offices. Watson was first arrested back in July when his ship docked in Greenland, which is park of the kingdom of Denmark. Danish authorities are still deciding whether to extradite him. Japan is one of the few nations that still engages in whaling. Environmentalists and animal lovers across the globe are outraged that any government would side with whalers at a time when our seas and the animals in them are in crisis. BREAKING NEWS with coverage of an extraordinary court hearing in Madison, Wisconsin. Famed Open Rescue leader Wayne Hsiung is demanding that a Special Prosecutor be appointed to launch a criminal case against a large laboratory beagle breeding facility that animal advocates charge is filled with many suffering beagles. Hsiung and 2 others entered that facility with cameras rolling back in 2017, documenting conditions. They removed 3 beagles they described as being in extreme distress. Hsiung was facing felony charges and up to 16 years in prison when the case against him and the 2 others was suddenly dropped earlier this year, just days before trial was finally set to start. Now, Wayne Hsiung is back in court demanding the facility be prosecuted. UnchainedTV had a camera in court to bring viewers the developments LIVE. UnchainedTV host Jane Velez-Mitchell, attorney Mirais Holden and animal activist Tiffany Brunelli provide analysis. The company in question is invited on any time.
EMERGENCY APPEAL: Help one amazing couple save more than 100 chimpanzees. Donate here: https://www.liberiachimpanzeerescue.org/donate.htmlNow watch as Jenny and Dr. Jim Desmond tell their harrowing story LIVE. In 2015, a group of animal protection groups asked the Desmonds to go to Liberia to save the lives of 66 chimpanzees who the NY Blood Center abandoned on six islands after using them in biomedical research. The Desmonds planned to spend about a month in Liberia putting systems in place and finding locals to take over their care, but they were unable to leave. Soon, government authorities began bringing them orphaned baby chimps who were victims of the bushmeat and exotic pet trades. No one else in Liberia had the experience or expertise to take care of them. It has been almost ten years, and the Desmonds now have about 115 chimps in their care and dozens of employees from neighboring villages. They've built the first phase of a permanent sanctuary in the forest. They are very eager to embark on phase 2, which would enable the adult chimps to get out of their enclosures and spend time in the forest, but they can’t even consider that because they don’t have enough money to cover their operating expenses. The fantastic three-part BBC series about the Desmonds’ conservation and rescue work, Baby Chimp Rescue, led to donations that enabled them to operate and complete phase 1, but that infusion has ended. Because they are in Liberia and do not have a network of supporters abroad, they are not raising the amount of money they need to function, much less build out the sanctuary and create an endowment. Says TheirTurn founder Donny Moss, Having visited them twice while working on the campaign to compel the NY Blood Center for pay for the care of the chimps they abandoned, I have seen the extraordinary work they do in the most challenging of environments. And, as one of the few Americans who has been there, I feel an obligation to help them and the chimps. Their charity, Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection, is registered in the U.S. VISIT: https://www.liberiachimpanzeerescue.org/ - PLEASE HELP! Now, UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell interviews Jenny and Jim Desmond and TheirTurn's Donny Moss.
BREAKING NEWS: Animal Outlook releases shocking, new undercover video of chickens being abused in a California factory farm and is calling for the Fresno County District Attorney’s office to file criminal animal cruelty charges against the corporation, which Animal Outlook identifies as Foster Farms, a major supplier to many big supermarkets. The video appears to show multiple instances of forklifts driving over and hitting live chickens, chickens being thrown, chickens being kicked and grabbed by their wings. Foster Farms says all of its chicken farms are American Humane Association Certified, and that the chickens it raises enjoy the 5 freedoms: including, “freedom from discomfort,” and “freedom from injury, pain, or disease.” Animal Outlook says its investigation “reveals a stark contrast, showing anything but humane care and freedom from discomfort, injury and fear.” Foster Farms is invited on any time to respond to Animal Outlook’s allegations. UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell speaks to Animal Outlook’s new Executive Director, Ben Williamson about this blockbuster breaking news and his fascinating history as a leader in the animal rights movement. Asha Farm Sanctuary founder Tracy Murphy speaks to UnchainedTV about her ordeal and persecution. Murphy was a New York business executive who went vegan due to her love of animals. A decade ago, she moved to a rural area north of Buffalo to start her own sanctuary, called Asha’s Farm Sanctuary. Things were going wonderfully until 2 cows wandered onto her sanctuary property in the summer of 2022. Murphy took them in and fed them. Then, all hell broke loose. She was ultimately arrested, shackled, charged with a felony and gagged from doing interviews. And, she was targeted by protests and threats as, she says, the surrounding community turned against her. Now, her charge reduced to a misdemeanor, she tells her story to UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell and pleads for help to keep her sanctuary going and get through this persecution and prosecution. To help her sanctuary, donate to:https://www.ashasfarmsanctuary.org/donate-only.html

In this extraordinary show, you will meet Delilah, a cat who survived hellish, taxpayer funded experiments at a USDA lab before being rescued by Anthony Bellotti, the President & Founder of White Coat Waste, whom you’ll also meet. Millions of other animals are not so lucky. Right now, about 14,000 cats and kittens are trapped in laboratories. The domestic shorthair is one of America’s most popular pets. But federal government agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the Dept. of Defense (DOD) have spent millions to buy, breed, and abuse felines in wasteful laboratory torture—and YOU, the taxpayers, pay the bill whether you approve of this government sanctioned sadism or not. But there’s hope. White Coat Waste is a bipartisan campaign to expose and close the U.S. government’s cat and animal experimentation business. WCW proclaims that, over the last 5 years, it has shut down all confirmed labs causing pain and distress to cats inside the federal government and won the first-ever federal policies to retire and release survivors as pets. Now WCW is leading the fight to end taxpayer-funded cat and kitten experimentation across the United States. WCW Founder and President Anthony Bellotti (along with Delilah) joins UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell to reveal what YOU can do to stop these wasteful experiments. To get involved and help, visit: https://www.whitecoatwaste.org
Hot enough for ya? The future of our planet could be determined by what American politicians put into the next FARM BILL, which currently gives MASSIVE subsidies to animal agriculture, to produce cheap meat and dairy. But, the meat and dairy industry is a HUGE contributor to climate change. Our government claims it’s fighting climate change while subsidizing the very industry that’s largely causing it. Will politicians vote to continue this dangerously unsustainable status quo for the next 5 years? Activists from Free From Harm continue to speak truth to power. At one so-called “listening session,” activists stood up to a pro-factory farming politician to deliver tough questions about the massive bailouts to animal agriculture, the spread of diseases like bird flu and how Big Ag Big Dollars have corrupted politics. Now, UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell speaks with those activists, including Free From Harm’s Robert Grillo and activist Natalie Fulton, and brings you the latest.
A group of outraged and frightened Georgia residents have united to fight a plan to put what would be America’s largest laboratory monkey-breeding facility in the small town of Bainbridge, Georgia, which is 233 miles south of Atlanta. The residents have filed a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the highly controversial plan to house 30-thousand monkeys, TWICE the human population of the town. PETA is on the ground supporting the residents. They argue that the plan should be invalidated because local officials approved the proposal during an illegally assembled meeting, violating Georgia’s Open Meetings Act. Basically, the citizens say this was being done behind their backs and they are furious over the impact on their safety and their property values. They say the presence of thousands of caged monkeys in distress, waiting to be shipped off for cruel experiments would be a constant source of anxiety and cast a pall over their close-knit community. Now, UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell gets the very latest from PETA’s Amy Meyer, Kristina Martin of Stop the Money Business Bainbridge Group and resident Linda Miller. PETA’s founder and leader Ingrid Newkirk is celebrating her 75th birthday! And, UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell is thrilled and honored to get to speak with Ingrid for the hour! Learn about Ingrid's fascinating life, growing up in India and then, somehow, becoming an animal protection officer in the United States. How much progress has been achieved since People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was started back in 1980? A lot! As PETA points out, “At that time, researchers were experimenting on chimpanzees in squalid laboratories, pigs were being slammed into walls in car-crash tests, and dogs were being shot in military exercises. But PETA’s landmark victories for animals, including the first-ever police raid on a laboratory and convictions for cruelty to animals in the meat industry—as well as the media attention that has accompanied them—have led to a huge change in public attitudes, and the victories keep coming. “These days, the demand for vegan food has skyrocketed, Ringling Bros. has reinvented itself as a stunning animal-free circus, nearly every major fashion brand has gone fur-free, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is no longer required to mandate archaic and cruel animal tests for new drugs. PETA’s work continues, with campaigns that include calling on fashion houses to stop selling reptile skins, pushing for lifesaving reforms in the horse racing industry, and fighting the monkey-to-laboratory pipeline. Now, Ingrid would like you to celebrate her birthday by going to https://www.peta.org/75 and seeing the 75 easy ways you can speak up for animals!
As the battle over the Farm Bill rages on Capitol Hill, 3 animal activists were arrested, during a House committee hearing, for demanding that taxpayers not be forced to pay for massive subsidies to the animal agriculture industry or foot the bill for cruel practices that also devastate the environment and hurt marginalized communities. Robert Grillo, president of the grassroots animal rights organization Free From Harm, was one of those arrested and joins us to tell the tale and warn us about the dangers of the Farm Bill, which could prop up animal agriculture with huge government subsidies for years to come and which also threatens to thwart the will of the people who’ve passed propositions against the cruelest animal agriculture practices. Is there a multi-million dollar misinformation campaign to stop the plant-based food movement in its tracks? The Freedom Food Alliance, led by renowned digital media expert Robbie Lockie, has just released a detailed report which makes that case. Harvesting Denial, Distractions and Deception: Understanding Animal Agriculture’s Disinformation Strategies and Exploring Solutions argues that the meat industry - though companies, lobbyists, trade groups, checkoff programs, influencers and so-called experts and industry-backed academics - is waging a full-scale misinformation and disinformation campaign against vegan products and the plant-based movement in general. This is happening at our own peril, as the climate crisis worsens and advertiser-based mainstream media basically ignores one of the biggest causes: animal agriculture. The media runs story after story attacking plant-based meat alternatives as processed while failing to mention that processed meat is officially cancer-causing, according to the World Health Organization. When the World Bank recently called for governments to shift away from subsidizing meat and dairy and embrace alternatives proteins, that urgent recommendation was ignored by mainstream media. So, what can we do to save ourselves, animals and the planet? Let’s find out from Robbie Lockie, one of the founders of Plant Based News whose new campaign is getting the real story out to the world before it’s too late. For more visit: https://www.freedomfoodalliance.org/ - website

VICTORY: After years of PETA protests, the Miami Seaquarium’s lease is finally being terminated! Miami-Dade County announced the decision, which requires the animal prison to relinquish the property to its owner by April 21, 2024. PETA’s response to the news? “The world watched as the Miami Seaquarium let the lone orca Lolita waste away and die, allowed animals to eat trash in crumbling enclosures, and ignored its attending veterinarian’s instructions until she finally resigned—but now the world can cheer at the news that help is finally on the way for the long-suffering animals held captive there. After more than 50 years of miserable animals and false promises to clean up its act, the Seaquarium’s impending shutdown is overdue, and PETA looks to Miami-Dade County authorities to keep up the good work by ensuring that these animals are sent to reputable facilities where they’ll get the care they so desperately need.” We invite Miami Seaquarium on to respond. So, what will happen to the animals still at Seaquarium? And, what about SeaWorld? PETA’s Amanda Brody brings us the very latest! To get involved, visit: https://www.peta.org/

More Angelinos are joining the battle to stop a destructive and highly unpopular plan to bulldoze LA’s Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve. LA’s last coastal wetlands, near Marina del Rey, is home to upwards of 2,000 species, including threatened and endangered species. Some estimate there are up to a million beings, large and small, who would have no place to go if the one square mile of wild land is bulldozed…. Foxes, owls, egrets, cormorants, pelicans, snakes, herons, butterflies, to name a few of the species. In May, a judge brought the bulldozing plans to “a screeching halt” (is how the LA Times described the ruling) saying California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Environmental Impact Report was flawed and failed to account for flood risks! But the CDFW continues to try and move forward even though about 40 people testified against it at a recent hearing with virtually zero testimony in support of the ecologically unsound plan. URGENT: Please denounce the bulldozing plan by emailing your opposition to: BWERcomments@wildlife.ca.gov (Put “Ballona REIR Scoping Comment” in the subject line)Now, Defend Ballona Wetland’s Marcia Hanscomm Wendy-Sue Rosen’s Protect Ballona Wetlands and In Defense of Animals’ Lisa Levinson join UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell to break it down. Shocking new developments in the Open Rescue Trial in Sonoma County, California. Numerous animal activists were initially arrested for the rescue of about 70 chickens and ducks from 3 factory farms in 2018 & 2019. They say they have the legal right to rescue suffering animals. Now, only ONE defendant remains, charged with conspiracy and trespassing, Wayne Hsiung, co-founder of Direct Action Everywhere, a large animal rights organization considered a threat to the meat industry. Is the government trying to “cut the head off the snake” as one prosecutor is alleged to have declared? Why is the defense gagged and defense witnesses forced to appear in court, prior to the start of trial? Our expert panel includes former Assistant DA Nathan Semmel, TheirTurn’s Donny Moss, OMG! LA host Michelle Celestino, Animal Alliance’s Ellen Dent, Action Hour’s Lindsey Baker and DxE’s Carla Cabral, LIVE at the courthouse. UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell hosts this panel.

Eat Differently is a powerful, new PSA campaign featuring Paul McCartney, Jane Goodall, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Albert Einstein, Cesar Chavez and other revolutionary thinkers. It's aim is to inspire people to eat plants, not animals. An homage to the 1990's famous Think Different campaign, this is one of the largest efforts ever to advocate for a diet of plants, not animals. It directly counters the dairy industry’s “Got Milk” campaign. Visit http://eatdifferently.com/ Also, nonprofit research organization Faunalytics has just surveyed thousands of Americans about how likely they would be to try a number of pro-animal actions, such as giving up meat or buying cruelty-free products. The results are fascinating and will help animal advocates tailor specific “asks” to the most receptive groups. Lori Amos talks about Eat Differently and Zach Wulderk brings us the Faunalytics findings. For more: https://faunalytics.org/
Still eating chicken? Well, then you MUST listen to this episode. An Animal Outlook undercover investigator joins us LIVE (without revealing his or her identity) to tell us about the horrific conditions this individual documented on video while working at a Virginia chicken farm. Among the allegations: water deprivation to the point that birds died of dehydration, food deprivation because feed was not delivered on schedule, birds thrown and kicked, injured and deformed, left to suffer. Animal Outlook’s Exec Director Cheryl Leahy also talks to UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell about why they are seeking criminal charges and why she believes this abuse is not exceptional but systemic. The companies involved are invited on UnchainedTV to respond. For more, visit https://animaloutlook.org/

Well-known Canadian animal activist Jenny McQueen and some of her co-defendants join us to discuss their guilty verdicts for breaking and entering and obstructing a peace officer. In 2019, they entered a Canadian pig breeding facility in a Direct Action Everywhere campaign and videotaped the horrific conditions, demanding action for the helpless animals in very grim conditions. While handing down the guilty verdicts, even the judge noted that “several of those images are impactful, poignant, troubling, and disturbing.” So, why are they being punished for blowing the whistle? UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell hosts this compelling panel discussion.

The Animal Activist Legal Defense Project, led by renowned attorney Carter Dillard, is now representing animal activists all over the United States. Recently, there was a fascinating legal summit unpacking the historic acquittal of two Direct Action Everywhere animal activists who faced over a decade in prison for rescuing two sick piglets from a Utah factory farm. The summit tried to figure out what exactly what made the jurors, in a conservative Utah county, find the defendants, Wayne Hsiung and Paul Picklesimer, NOT GUILTY on all counts. And, the summit also discussed the legal underpinnings of the Right to Rescue movement, which says: when you see an animal suffering you have the right to rescue that animal, even if it means going onto private property and removing the animal. Now, attorney Carter Dillard talks to UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell about all of this! Are we hitting the animal rights LEGAL tipping point?

In recent years, science has confirmed the inhumane and destructive impact of animal agriculture — a food system based on interrelated oppression and injustice. As the founding farm animal Sanctuary in the U.S., Farm Sanctuary has rescued and provided refuge for countless survivors of the animal agriculture system. Today, at Farm Sanctuary’s Los Angeles, CA and Watkins Glen, NY Sanctuaries you will find nearly 800 rescued animals — each with an individual story to tell. These survivors are ambassadors, representing the billions of farm animals currently in the system. They, and others like them, have changed the hearts and minds of a generation.

White Coat Waste is a leading voice against cruel, useless, wasteful government experimentation on animals. WCW’s viral #BeagleGate campaign has now led to the introduction of the PROTECTING DOGS SUBJECTED TO EXPERIMENTS ACT (HR 8699) to defund unnecessary dog experiments conducted with tax dollars by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Says WCW, “NIH-funded white coats are wasting millions of taxpayer dollars to inject puppies with cocaine, de-bark and poison dogs, infest beagles with flies and ticks, and force dogs to suffer septic shock. A supermajority of Americans across the political spectrum want Congress to cut NIH’s wasteful spending on dog experiments. How does the youngest ever TEDx speaker keep up with the demands of changing the world? When Genesis recently met one of her all-time favorite animal ally, earth defender and musician who has stayed true to herself throughout all these years global pop star Billie Eilish, she expressed how Billie has shown her the importance of continuing to speak up for animals and the planet even if it seems people don't care, because eventually, they start to listen! Do the voters of California believe allowing the sale of pork from pigs raised in their state, that can not move or turn around, inflict moral injury on the people of the state? Do pigs raised in intensive confinement pose a threat to public health and safety? Do California voters have to tolerate products of animal cruelty being sold in their state? Find out details in discussion with Bryan Pease, civil rights, environmental and animal protection attorney, who recently filed a brief in response to a rebuttal argument in favor of Prop 12. In addition, Animal Protection and Rescue League, Inc. (APRL), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in San Diego, CA, which coordinated volunteer efforts to gather thousands of signatures for Prop 12 and contributed over $25,000 to promote its passage, was also a co-signer on the rebuttal argument. APRL has an interest in ensuring that a duly enacted law approved by nearly two thirds of California voters is not eliminated based on the fiction that there is no local benefit to California. Once Upon a Time We Ate Animals: The Future of Food, by Roanne van Voorst, combines the ethical clarity of Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals, with the disquieting vision of Alan Weissman's bestseller, The World Without Us, a thought-provoking, entertaining exploration of a future where animal consumption is a thing of the past. Though increasing numbers of people know that eating meat is detrimental to our planet's health, many still can't be convinced to give up eating meat. But how can we change behavior when common arguments and information aren't working?
Acclaimed anthropologist Dr. Roanne van Voorst changes the dialogue. In Once Upon a Time We Ate Animals, she shifts the focus from the present looking forward to the future looking back--imagining a world in which most no longer use animals for food, clothing, or other items. By shifting the viewpoint, she offers a clear and compelling vision of what it means to live in a world without meat. A massive shift is already taking place--everything van Voorst covers in this book has already been invented and is being used today by individuals and small organizations worldwide.
Hopeful and persuasive, Once Upon a Time We Ate Animals offers a tantalizing vision of what is not only possible but perhaps inevitable. Since its release, the book has been published in 5 different languages, and is now inspiring vegans, vegetarians and omnivores in countries like Japan, Brazil, Germany and Spain. For more information, please view her website at www.roannevanvoorst.com
Ensuring that everyone has healthy food options available to them is the impetus for Gwenna Hunter, the founder of the Vegans of LA Food Bank, to launch the venture. Gwenna explains, “Food worthiness is a human right. In providing plant-based foods to communities in need we empower them with new food choices and in turn we create a more sustainable world.” Gwenna speaks about “food worthiness” from her heart. Growing up in a food desert herself in Cleveland, she knows what it’s like not to have a grocery store for miles. “Without knowing why, coupled with the lack of education provided, I now know that I was experiencing poor nutrition, not by choice, but by scarcity of accessibility to healthy foods.” With the rising costs of groceries, families are struggling even more to regularly provide nutritious meals. Drawing on her experience working with a non-profit organization managing a vegan food aid program that provided WFPB (Whole Food Plant Based) products and produce for social justice and community organizations, such as the LGBT Center South, Black Lives Matter Los Angeles, Black Women Farmers of LA, Black Women for Wellness, KRST Unity Center, and Downtown Crenshaw, Gwenna her experience and understanding of the dearth of healthy, plant-based options in many areas of Los Angeles to provide food equality to those who do not have accessibility, in partnership with Hope On Union Food Bank.
The food bank is collaborating with several well-known plant-based companies, such as Hodo Foods, Good Catch, Hilary’s, OMNI Foods, Unreal Deli and more, to make their products available to people who live in these “food deserts” where access to healthy, nutritious food is extremely limited. In addition, fresh fruits and vegetables are offered as part of the program. The response from local residents has been overwhelming since launching the program in May, 2022.

Vegan business is, indeed, big business. Literally, sales of vegan food products have far outpaced those for the CPG (Consumer Packaged Goods) sector as a whole. That charge has been led, not only by those who identify as vegans, but mostly by non-vegans who understand they can now replicate the taste of their favorite foods, the feel of their leather car seats, and the performance of their athletic footwear, while still voting for a better world with their wallets. But how do you reach these consumers who are propelling this change?
Enter Vegandale, launched in 2015 in Toronto, the fastest growing global vegan food and drink festival, gathering guests of 30,000+. Catering to the masses in 6 major cities, including Toronto, Chicago, Miami, New York, Los Angeles and Dallas, Vegandale brings together delicious local vegan food and drink from restaurants, vegan pop-ups, celebrity chefs and vendors from all over the world. In 2023, London and other European locations have already been secured. To consumers, Vegandale is a day-long entertainment experience. However, at the core of Vegandale is a marketing and brand building engine—one that includes research, data discovery, testing, and content creation. Founder and CEO, Hellenic Vincent De Paul, doesn’t pull punches. He will settle for nothing less than global vegan domination. Sounds uncompromising, but that hard stance has actually bolstered growth and profits. Vegandale is selling morality and more than a little bit of guilt. And people love it. Join Jane Velez-Mitchell and Hellenic as they dive deeper into the business and global impact of veganism.
The people of California spoke loud and clear when they overwhelmingly passed Proposition 12, which requires animals bred for food, like pigs, be given enough room to turn around. Unbelievably, millions of pigs are kept in crates that are literally only slightly bigger than the size of their bodies. These pig gestation crates do not allow the pigs to turn around or even scratch themselves. They amount to animal torture on an institutionalized scale. Well, now, pork producers want to circumvent the will of the people of California and are trying to have this law nullified. The case is set to be heard by the Supreme Court of the United States on October 11th, 2022. It has global implications because Prop 12 will not allow these cruelly-produced meat products to be sold in California, which is the world's 5th largest economy. Animal Outlook is one of the organizations joining the opposition to the pork industry, speaking out for voiceless animals. Cheryl Leahy, Animal Outlook's Executive Director, speaks to UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell about this case. Cheryl will also tell us about Animal Outlook's lawsuit against the American Heart Association for the AFA's Heart-Check certification mark on certain meat products, despite meat consumption's connection to heart disease.
The case concerns California’s ability to ban the sale of pork from pigs that have been confined for nearly their entire lives in cages so small they can’t even turn around.
What is the case about?
Pork producers have challenged California’s Proposition 12, which requires that all eggs, veal, and pork produced and/or sold in the state comply with basic minimal space requirements to enable animals – including pregnant pigs in the pork industry – to have enough room to spread their wings or limbs and turn around. The pork industry does not want to have to abide by Prop 12 and is seeking to nullify the law.

Are you aware that 20 billion animals are killed each year by the nutritional supplements industry? Maria Cebrian, the founder of the vegan supplement company Terraseed and activist for animals, is leading the Transparent Label Campaign to fight on behalf of these animals. The fact is that approximately 50% of dietary supplements contain animal-derived ingredients. According to a recent study authored by animal protection global organization The Save Movement and Terraseed, supported by a coalition of animal welfare non-profit organizations, there is a lack of transparency in disclosing the animal-derived ingredients or how those inputs are sources. In an industry worth $55 billion, this study identifies the gap of the impact of nutritional supplements on our environment and animals worldwide.
A recent poll conducted by animal rights group Mercy For Animals made public a groundbreaking survey, which found that 81% of military service members believe the military should provide its members plant-based meals ready to eat (MREs).

For the first time, the Constitutional Court of Ecuador has recognized the legal rights of nonhuman animals. The ruling not only elevates the legal status of nonhuman animals under Ecuador's constitutional rights of nature but also requires that new legislation be drafted to protect the rights of animals.
The court's ruling was the result of a habeas corpus action filed by Ana Beatriz Burbano Proaño on behalf of Estrellita, a woolly monkey who had lived in her home for 18 years. Environmental authorities had forcibly seized the monkey on the grounds that possessing a wild animal is prohibited by Ecuador law. Estrellita died within a month of being relocated to a zoo.
How does this breakthrough ruling impact animals in other parts of the world, including the United States? Let's find out with our esteemed legal panel from the Nonhuman Rights Project and Harvard, including some of those who worked on the case. Please support the groundbreaking work of the Nonhuman Rights Project at: www.nonhumanrights.org.
Wouldn't it be great to understand how people really think and feel about animals? Wouldn't that help animal lovers and advocates make the smartest strategic decisions when it comes to creating a more compassionate culture? Well, now, there are those statistics.... thanks to Faunalytics.
Faunalytics is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers animal advocates with access to research, analysis, strategies, and messages that improve their effectiveness to reduce animal suffering. For more than 20 years, Faunalytics has conducted and disseminated original research that delves into essential animal advocacy issues. Faunalytics also houses the world’s largest collection of opinion and behavior research on animals and offers pro-bono support to other animal advocacy organizations looking to increase their impact. Faunalytics has been named a Top Charity by Animal Charity Evaluators. For more information, visit www.faunalytics.org.
Faunalytics has done many studies over the years. Their latest findings concern chickens and fish. Those two categories of animals account for most of the billions, even trillions, of animals killed every year. So, if we figured out how to get people caring about chicken and fish, we'd be so much closer to achieving a compassionate, plant-based world. Well, they've collected the data. Let's find out!

Wild animals are in crisis everywhere. But, how can we demand other nations protect their wildlife if we are not protecting our own? So, now, environmentalists and animal lovers are working together in California to help wild animals survive and thrive by being able to get across major freeways!
The Center for Biological Diversity and The Wildlands Network are sponsoring the Safe Roads and Wildlife Protection Act (AB 2344) in partnership with Assemblymembers Laura Friedman and Ash Kalra.
The Act requires state officials to develop a Wildlife Connectivity Action Plan for wildlife crossings, establish a Wildlife Connectivity Project List that identifies priority wildlife crossing projects, and requires Caltrans to address and fix barriers to wildlife on new projects and road improvements and proactively implement 10 wildlife crossing projects at identified connectivity hotspots every year.
Bold state action to ensure wildlife connectivity is critical for biodiversity resilience and climate change adaptability. Incorporating crossing infrastructure into our state highway system will give California’s iconic wildlife, like mountain lions, desert tortoises, and California tiger salamanders, a fighting chance to survive and recover. Wildlife connectivity also is essential to meet the state’s goals of conserving at least 30% of California’s land and coastal waters by 2030 in a manner that protects and restores biodiversity and builds climate resilience. All species of elephants are ecologically significant. They traverse across vast areas 16 to 18 hours a day, trampling softwood trees, thus allowing rain and sunshine to penetrate the ground, promoting hardwood trees that store more carbon-di-oxide (a potent greenhouse gas that exacerbates climate change). According to the International Monetary Authority, African forest elephants help fight climate change, with each elephant at a carbon value of $1.75 million. Elephants also create pathways to waterholes and fodder for other animals, who would otherwise be unable to access these life-giving sources.
Asian elephants also likely play a key role in climate mitigation. According to the IUCN, there are less than 40,000 Asian elephants left on the planet, fully 27,000 in India, their last bastion. Thus, saving Asian elephants of India is critically important to not only saving the species, but also other species in the ecosystem.
The issue is, human elephant conflict (HEC) is rampant, due to the unprecedented human population growth in India, driving competition for space. Reckless development and land use have decimated 80% of wildlife habitats. Famished elephants are forced to leave the forests and venture into croplands to quell their hunger, exacerbating HEC, resulting in senseless tragedies – both humans and elephants. This in turn triggers retaliatory killings of elephants, and the vicious cycle continues unabated. Together, we can break that terrible cycle and ensure the survival of these majestic beings.
Dr. Ferdowsian unveils her proposal for a Belmont Report for Animals that she and her colleagues have created, which would take into account animals’ preferences, interests, and vulnerabilities, and would have a significant impact on using animals for research. We humans have an arsenal of human biology-based methods, and non-animal technologies could put an end to enormous suffering for both animals and humans. Animals want and require freedom, and together we can engage in a reassessment of how humans treat other animals, while embracing the medical advancements of the 21st century.
In 2019, Drs. Hope Ferdowsian and Nik Kulkarni founded Phoenix Zones Initiative (PZI), a global nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the interconnected rights, health, and wellbeing of people, animals, and the planet through education, research, and advocacy. Led by physicians and a diverse team, PZI focuses on widespread ethical and structural change to uplift the most vulnerable and marginalized, including children and animals, and provides resources to help others do the same.
Historically, attempts to advance medical research have depended heavily on violating the rights of vulnerable people and animals. Forty years ago, as a result of public demands following unjust human research practices in the United States, the US Congress released The Belmont Report, which established key ethical principles to which human research should adhere: respect for autonomy; obligations to beneficence (doing good and avoiding harm) and justice; and special protections for vulnerable individuals and populations. Despite organized animal protection movements dating back to at least the 18th century, there are currently no standards for animals that are comparable to those that apply to human subjects under The Belmont Report.
Hundreds of millions of animals—including fish, mice, rats, dogs, cats, nonhuman primates, and many other species—are used in research each year. After being forcibly bred and confined, most animals endure a lifetime of suffering which is full of painful protocols and procedures that cause physical and mental distress and illness, and then the majority of those animals are killed. The current treatment of animals within the context of research is based on outdated science and poor ethics.
“Decades of public outrage over unethical human research eventually led to the 1979 publication of The Belmont Report,” says CEO Dr. Hope Ferdowsian. “As is now the case with humans, animals should be afforded key protections. Animals are often targeted because of their vulnerabilities. As a result, they overwhelmingly bear the burdens of research despite their inability to provide informed consent or benefit from the research. We need a transformative paradigm shift to bring medical research into the 21st century. We need a Belmont Report for animals.”
White Coat Waste is a taxpayer watchdog group with a shocking new exposé: WCW alleges the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been shipping tax dollars to a Kremlin-run animal testing lab for cruel and wasteful experiments on cats.
WCW charges that, as recently as November 2021, the US NIH shipped $549,331 (via a university) to Russia’s state-run Pavlov Institute of Physiology for experiments in which healthy cats had portions of their brains removed, electrodes implanted in their spines, and were forced to walk on a treadmill in spinal cord experiments. WCW says another $221,135 in NIH funding was sent to the same Russian lab for cat experiments in 2018. We invite the NIH, the Pavlov Institute and any other related entity on to respond. Visit whitecoatwaste.org for more.
WCW says the NIH currently authorizes four different Russian state animal testing labs including the Pavlov Institute to receive taxpayer funding.
Last year, following WCW’s Worldwide Waste investigation, Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) introduced the Accountability in Foreign Animal Research (AFAR) Act(HR 5527) to cut funding for animal testing in foreign adversary nations including Russia.
WCW says “Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to pay white coats in the Russian government to torture and kill cats in wasteful treadmill experiments. As White Coat Waste Project exposed, there are four Kremlin-run animal testing labs that NIH has authorized to receive our money and U.S. sanctions against Russia should include defunding them.”
Statement from Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) “Our tax dollars should never be sent to state-run labs in adversary nations like Russia and China that threaten our national security. My AFAR Act would prohibit tax dollars from being shipped to animal testing labs in any countries that are deemed foreign adversaries.”
Inspired by Encompass’ racial equity trainings, we will discuss this book, Antiracism in Animal Advocacy, which is a collection of essays written by farmed animal protection leaders who are committed to exploring and prioritizing racial equity, as we work to create a more effective and just animal protection movement. Stories and experiences are documented in an exploratory space from which to grow, ultimately creating new paths forward. LGBTQ rights and the intersectionality of social justice movements is something we're also discussing with our fascinating panel, led by UnchainedTV.com's Jane Velez-Mitchell.

PETA says the public needs to be concerned about the growing number of animal to human transplants. The New York Times recently reported that surgeons had ...for the first time successfully transplanted kidneys from a genetically modified pig into the abdomen of a 57-year-old brain-dead man. Kathy Guillermo is senior vice president of PETA’s Laboratory Investigations Department. She says, The risk of transmitting unknown viruses with an animal is real, as the current pandemic has taught us. She adds the university conducting the procedure has also been under USDA investigation for alleged animal welfare violations.
PETA says a whistleblower blew the lid on the university's laboratory where the internal organs of genetically modified pigs are transplanted into baboons. PETA's says the whistleblower alleged a litany of violations, including that animals were enduring unimaginable pain and distress. “Sensitive monkeys and pigs are being used in grisly Frankenstein experiments that have never worked,” says PETA.
The universities, hospitals, corporations and government agencies involved are invited on any time to respond.
UnchainedTV.com brings you a different kind of war story. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created a humanitarian crisis and an animal crisis. Many people are fleeing with their companion animals and others have been forced to leave their beloved animals behind to fend for themselves. PETA Germany reports “numerous people crossing the border with severe hypothermia. The situation is intense and confusing. Hundreds of people, with and without animals, are arriving in Poland exhausted and injured. Due to extreme traffic jams, many people are leaving their cars and walking towards the borders with Hungary, Poland, and Romania. PETA Germany is funneling 44,000 pounds of animal food into Ukraine. To help PETA’s lifesaving efforts, donate here: https://bit.ly/3vlzac0
The world’s most powerful animal rights organization adds, “The undertaking is risky, but they are determined to make it. PETA Germany is doing everything in its power to bring other urgently needed goods into the country as relief supplies.” ? PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk reports, “PETA Germany has managed to get over the border from Poland and is there, shepherding animals out, and we have delivered a 7.5 ton lorry’s worth of food to a shelter that is, so far, safe… we are befriending guards who like animals, etc., and all the PETA Europe affiliates, and PETA UK, have petitioned the various governments to waive restrictions on animal entries on a humanitarian emergency basis. So far, Poland, Hungary and Romania (where we do a ton of animal work), have agreed. We are demo’ing outside 10 Downing Street about this.
A PETA rep, UnchainedTV.com's Jane Velez-Mitchell, Simone Reyes, Director of Social Compassion and Donny Moss of TheirTurn.net talk about how war devastates people and animals. But, the plight of the animal victims can get overlooked in the chaos and fog of war. That is a double injustice.
Attorney and animal activist Wayne Hsiung has repeatedly risked serving prison terms to wake the world up to the horrors of modern day animal agriculture! This co-founder of the groundbreaking animal rights organization Direct Action Everywhere is using high-tech Virtual Reality cameras and Livestreams to bring viewers along with him as he, and other activists, engage in what DxE has coined Open Rescue. This is when activists trespass onto modern day Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, farms and slaughterhouses to rescue animals they identify as sick and/or at risk of death. Wayne Hsiung and others have been prosecuted for these actions. He was recently convicted in North Carolina for removing a baby goat from a farm in 2018, an action which he LIVE STREAMED on Facebook. He got a suspended sentence. Wayne Hsiung represented himself in the case and tried to bring issues of animal rights into the trial but was blocked by prosecutors and the judge. What’s next for Wayne Hsiung? Upcoming trials? This brilliant, changemaker discusses this and more with UnchainedTV’s Jane Velez-Mitchell.
APEX Advocacy is a Black-led animal rights organization that creates bold digital content and organizes activism to raise awareness of the impact animal oppression has on marginalized communities. APEX's goal is to increase the number of BIPOC who participate in animal activism by advocating for veganism, animal rights and collective liberation. APEX specifically focuses on drawing attention to the intersection of animal oppression and the oppression of marginalized communities.
Two powerful animal rights organizations, White Coat Waste and Advancing Law for Animals, just filed a new lawsuit against the National Institutes of Health charging that the NIH is illegally exempting taxpayer-funded animal labs in foreign countries from oversight!
Federal law states that any lab that conducts experiments on animals using American taxpayer funds via the NIH must have an animal care committee. WCW investigators say they discovered that the NIH illegally exempts foreign white coats from oversight. And, they’re suing.
The NIH is notorious for funding absurd and horrifically cruel experiments on innocent animals that achieve nothing to improve human health. Case in point: White Coat Waste Project (WCW) investigators have found a terrible pairing, courtesy of NIDA (the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health), and paid for with your tax dollars: puppies and cocaine. Says WCW, “Through a drug-injecting jacket, puppies were dosed with cocaine again and again and again for months, along with an ‘experimental compound,’ to see how the two drugs interacted. The experiment, which ran from September 2020 to September 2021 (with a report due May 2022), was filmed, so experimenters could see if the puppies had any “adverse reactions” to the drugs. Prior to being drugged, the dogs were also forced to undergo surgery, where they were implanted with a “telemetry unit” to monitor their vital signs throughout the experiment.
This is wasteful and morally repugnant! Cocaine is awful and addictive and we all know that and there are programs and rehabs that can work if the addict is ready to change. Addiction will not be solved by torturing animals. We are not dogs. We do not have tails. If dogs eat chocolate they can die. Not us humans. This is a waste of taxpayer money, YOUR money. If this upsets you, please donate to https://www.whitecoatwaste.org and https://www.advancinglawforanimals.org. The NIH is invited on any time to respond.

Shock and outrage as undercover footage shows the horrors of pigs at an Iowa pork plant dying slow, agonizing deaths, many shrieking for long periods, in a horrific process where they are slowly roasted to death called Ventilation Shutdown. Matt Johnson, the undercover investigator for the animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere, was about to face trial for his role in documenting the violence against these animals, when charges were abruptly dropped in the midst of a media frenzy over the scandal. Meanwhile, for almost 2 years, Dr. Crystal Heath,. a veterinarian, has been working to raise awareness about the atrocity of ventilation shutdown, a mass extermination where where animals are essentially slowly roasted to death. She's been pleading with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) to reclassify it as a completely and utterly unacceptable form of depopulation. Dr. Heath says Ventilation Shutdown exposes the brutality of our food system and the need to stop the expansion of animal agriculture and reverse course with a sense of urgency. Some critics estimate that a quarter of a million pigs were exterminated in this brutal way during the COVID crisis in 2020, while it was being falsely portrayed as euthanasia.
In California in January of 2022, AB 558, the Child Nutrition Act of 2022, authored by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian and cosponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and Friends of the Earth, which incentivizes K-12 public schools across the state to offer healthier, climate-friendly plant-based meals and beverages, passed the California Assembly Education Committee by a vote of 5-0. Under the grant program set up by the bill, schools could apply to receive additional state funding for serving a plant-based entrée and plant-based milk. Visit SocialCompassioninLegislation.org to get on the team. Visit UnchainedTV,com for hundreds of healthy, low-carbon-footprint, plant-based recipes.
“AB 558, “The Childhood Nutrition Act of 2022,” passed its first hurdle after it passed in the Education Committee with a 5 to 0 vote. The Childhood Nutrition Act of 2022 will seek to improve the quality of food our kids eat while reducing greenhouse gas emissions through incentivizing healthy, all-inclusive diets. This bill will also assist school districts to adequately address the hunger needs of younger children who are not yet of school-age to have access to food, specifically breakfast, to guarantee that they are fed the most important meal of the day. As the bill moves forward in the process, we are excited to continue fighting for Childhood Nutrition!” stated Assemblymember Nazarian.
Multiple studies show that a plant-based diet is more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Shifting to more plant-based options reduce our carbon footprint by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and requires less land and water for food production.
“California serves an astounding 540 million school lunches each year. The policies that the State implements around what foods are served has an enormous impact not only on our students’ health, but also, and less obviously, an equally enormous impact on our environment and climate change, stated Nickolaus Sackett, Director of Legislative Affairs for cosponsor Social Compassion in Legislation. By creating incentives for schools to reduce the carbon footprint of half a billion meals, we will see a massive and immediate impact in our State’s fight against climate change.”
While numerous school districts across the state want to increase plant-based offerings, many face cost barriers since animal-based foods and cow’s milk are heavily subsidized by the federal government relative to plant-based options.
More and more people my age understand that if you love animals, you don't eat them. But it can be hard to find something to eat at school, said Genesis Butler, Social Compassion in Legislation Board Member, who, at age 12, became one of the youngest people ever to give a TED Talk. I'm glad California is giving us more options to help us, animals and the earth.

Why should one go vegan? Is veganism the positive change the world needs? Vegan Voices: Essays by Inspiring Changemakers is a comprehensive collection of compelling testimonials of how our food choices are deeply connected to the pressing challenges and issues of our time. Areas covered include: personal and global health; the devastation of animal agriculture to the environment; society’s collective loss of compassion and connection to our kindred animals; and the desire for a world of greater peace, harmony, and inclusivity. The book points to the need for a cultural and spiritual transformation in which we embrace the commonalities between all living beings as a source of positive change and healing.
The Whale Sanctuary Project is working to establish a gold-standard coastal sanctuary where cetaceans (whales and dolphins) can live in an environment that maximizes well-being and autonomy and is as close as possible to their natural habitat.
Public opinion has turned against keeping whales and dolphins in captivity. The creation of this sanctuary is the first step toward a vision of a world in which all cetaceans are treated with respect and are no longer confined to concrete tanks in entertainment parks and aquariums.
There are sanctuaries for many land animals who are being retired from zoos and circuses, and now is the time to provide them for whales and dolphins. This first-of-its-kind sanctuary is being created in Port Hilford, Nova Scotia, and it is being designed to serve as a model for many more that can then be built all over the world in the coming years.
As part of the Whale Sanctuary Project's overall mission, a team of global experts also assists in the rescue, rehabilitation and care of cetaceans in the wild. Vist whalesanctuaryproject.org to get involved.
Success doesn’t happen overnight. Except for Seth Tibbott, to whom it does?but only after fifteen years of intrepid failure. In Search of the Wild Tofurky tells the triumphant tale of how a self-described hippie with no business training but plenty of enterprising goals grew a $2,500 startup into a global brand and ushered in a plant-based foods renaissance along the way. Order your copy NOW: https://amzn.to/3CyeoWA
Tibbott took home a grand total of $31,000 in his first nine years of striving to bring to the people a nearly unknown soy product?tempeh?he knew in his gut was revolutionarily tasty. He eschewed a buttoned-up lifestyle and resided in tipis, trailers, and a treehouse; rented workspace to piano-repairing circus clowns; and even briefly counted the infamous Rajneeshees as clients. Tibbott was never one to chase the money or try to fit in. Instead, he built a business that fit him.
Thus Tibbott discovered the “secret sauce” ingredients that took his now-international brand from fameless to fame-ish to famous: bootstrapping, building business intuition, and staying true to his belief in eco-friendly practices. In Search of the Wild Tofurky proves that a good idea can change the world and make money, no matter the naysayers or the sometimes harsh twists and turns of the unconventional path. Look no further for a delightfully unexpected $100 million story of hope and hustle.
WATCH THE FILM HERE: theyretryingtokillus.com - “They’re Trying To Kill Us” is the follow-up feature-length documentary to the award-winning film What The Health, focusing on food (in)justice told through the lens of Hip Hop and urban culture, produced by Keegan Kuhn (Cowspiracy, What The Health) and John Lewis (Badass Vegan, Vegan Smart). Hip Hop influences global culture more than any other art form in human history. What Hip Hop artists say, wear, drive, drink and eat influences the purchases of millions of people around the world. As more and more influential Hip Hop artists adopt a food-conscious lifestyle, it has the potential to radically shift the world they speak to. Their global influence has a real possibility of combatting chronic disease, minimizing climate change, reducing healthcare costs, ending starvation and promoting compassion. The aim of the film is to encourage critical thought about justice by highlighting Hip Hop artists and activists who speak about injustice in all its forms. The film addresses food access and food deserts, nutritional and environmental racism, diet-related diseases, racial disparities of disease, government corruption, animal cruelty, climate change and ultimately how the influence of Hip Hop will save the world.
The #COP26 Cop Out Climate Conference INSIDE STORY! World leaders converged on Glasgow, Scotland in November 2021 to try and stave off the approaching climate apocalypse! But, as vegan activist Greta Thunberg famously said of the “leaders” efforts… “BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.” Greta led tens, even hundreds of thousands of protesters on the streets outside the conference, denouncing the summit as a PR move and demanding REAL change. COP26 actually served meat/fish and had the nerve to call itself “plant forward.” The biggest headline from the conference was how the menu was “like serving cigarettes at a lung cancer conference.” #JaneUnChained is #LIVE from #COP26Glasgow talking to vegan activists from PlantBasedTreaty.org, the Animal Save Movement and Climate Healers! Our correspondent Jill Carnegie and Plant Based Treaty's Lia Phillips reveal how they got to former Vice President Al Gore as Lia directly asked him to sign the Plant Based Treaty! Youth activist Vegan Evan joins with his mom Shannon Blair from Scotland. Anita Krajnc, of the Save Movement. and Dr Sailesh Rao of Climate Healers will talk about how they're trying to get leaders to admit the horrific impact of animal agriculture on the climate. Journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell moderates!
BREAKING NEWS: World leaders converge on COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland to tackle the climate crisis! But, one easily adopted solution is being ignored: Go Meatless Every Day! Former Cattle Rancher turned vegan activist and Rowdy Girl Sanctuary founder Renee King-Sonnen is urging everyone to JUST DO IT! Musician Moby is also urging leaders to sign the Plant Based Treaty, which calls for a cultural and economic shift to plant based food. You can sign at PlantBasedTreaty.org. Meanwhile, Climate Healers’ Dr. Sailesh Rao and vegan journalist Jill Carnegie report for us from COP26 in Glasgow on whether world leaders, like Prince Charles, are doing enough. Prince Charles says he now doesn't eat meat and fish?on?two days each week and doesn't eat any dairy products on another day.???Are these half measures enough? And… what’s the COP26 menu? Does it include meat and fish or are the world leaders trying to solve climate change being served a low-carbon-footprint, 100% plant-based diet? White Coat Waste, a non-profit dedicated to ending useless and tortuous taxpayer-funded experiments by the U.S. government, has scored a major victory that will end unimaginable suffering for many primates. as WCD puts it, A scathing July 2019 internal Veterans Administration report obtained by WCW via the Freedom of Information Act found that the Minneapolis VA was abusing monkeys by restricting water to primates for extensive periods of time and not keeping track of how long! Additionally, the VA found that laboratory staff didn’t know how to prepare, label, or store the PCP that was being given to the primates.
You read that right... our government was injecting primates with PCP, AKA ANGEL DUST! But here's the GOOD NEWS we will discuss in this broadcast. WCW reports, Last year, the project was extended for several more years and approved to use even more monkeys, but we’ve just uncovered that the experiments were ended early. Army veteran and Waste Warrior Rep. Brian Mast (R-FL), who has been leading efforts to cut wasteful VA animal testing, confirmed the win directly with the VA. Here's the petition you can sign, joining thousands of other caring citizens to end this barbaric practice forever: https://bit.ly/3hMQAqp
There's more good news out of Europe regarding animal experimentation. LiveKindly reports: The European Parliament adopted a resolution vote calling for the European Commission to develop a definitive action plan to bring an end to lab animal testing. This should clearly identify key milestones and targets in order to ensure and incentivize meaningful progress. The plan to transition away from animal testing to ethical, more effective, more modern methods was adopted by an overwhelming majority! Are we seeing the beginning of the end of the medieval practice of animal experimentation? Let's find out now.

The Supreme Court of the United States has rejected the meat industry's challenge to a California law prohibiting cruel confinement of farmed animals! This is a HUGE victory for animal rights and the animals themselves! On June 28, 2021, the Supreme Court of the United States rejected the North American Meat Institute’s (NAMI) challenge to California’s Proposition 12. Proposition 12 is due to go into effect on January 1, 2022. It strengthens existing California law to ban the intensive confinement of egg-laying chickens, mother pigs and calves used in the veal industry. The law also prohibits the sale in California of eggs, pork and veal from facilities that confine animals in cruel cages. Voters adopted Proposition 12 in 2018.
When NAMI sued California in an attempt to stop the state from implementing Proposition 12, Animal Outlook voluntarily intervened in the lawsuit on behalf of the State of California to defend Proposition 12 and protect the millions of hens, pigs and calves used to produce meat and eggs sold in California. Animal Outlook was joined by Animal Equality, Animal Legal Defense Fund, Compassion in World Farming, Farm Sanctuary, the Humane League and the Humane Society of the United States.
In rejecting NAMI’s challenge, the Supreme Court upheld an appellate court’s denial of NAMI’s claim that Proposition 12 violated the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court’s decision affirms the right of states to pass laws protecting animals, public health and safety. While an appeal in a second lawsuit against Proposition 12, brought by the National Pork Producers Council, still looms, the Supreme Court’s decision against NAMI is a massive victory for animals. AnimalOutlook.org is a great site to visit to get involved and learn more. Here to discuss all this is Animal Outlook's legal counsel Will Lowrey.
There is a lot of talk about improving America's infrastructure. The House of Representatives recently passed the INVEST Act, legislation that would earmark billions towards improving America’s roadways, transportation, and more, and includes funds for wildlife corridors and crossings -- to help wild animals survive in an increasingly developed world. Now, the International Fund for Animal Welfare lays out the case for making sure wildlife corridors are part of the nation's infrastructure planning and laws. You can help! Wildlife corridors:
Decrease wildlife-vehicle collisions: Every year in the U.S., an estimated 1 to 2 million collisions occur between motorists and large animals, resulting in 200 human deaths and 26,000 injuries – costing the U.S. 8 billion dollars annually. And, there's the suffering and death of wildlife, innocent being trying to survive in an increasingly complex and challenging world,
Help preserve wildlife habitats: In addition to transportation routes, structures such as walls, fences, and dams immensely affect and impede migratory routes, cutting off food and water supplies, and otherwise disrupting important wildlife habitats.
Save human and animal lives: Our surface and water transit routes are important to the American way of life, but they also represent physical barriers that can be insurmountable for wildlife and dangerous for everyone.
Find out how you can help speak for otherwise voiceless wildlife at risk right now.
You are invited to Vegan World 2026! This online Convergence will happen on Jul 31-Aug 1, 2021, for a two-day fun-filled, intellectually challenging weekend. There will also be future convergences. So sign up now at ClimateHealers.org and get involved! Help us save the planet and all the living beings on it from the environmental apocalypse barreling towards us. Dr. Sailesh Rao, the founder of VeganWorld2026 and ClimateHealers.org discusses the mission and how to achieve it.
For a Vegan World, we need to specify four aspects:? 1) a Vegan Constitution, ?2) Vegan Institutions,? 3) Vegan Infrastructure, and? 4) a Vegan Currency All of these must encode the basic values of equality, nonviolence, compassion and implement seven core shifts which Dr. Rao will outline in this podcast.
Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me. That's the old saying. But, what if the opposite is true? Today's language denigrates animals with many common phrases encouraging cruelty and violence against animals. Now that the cat's out of the bag should be kill two birds with one stone? Or should we feed two birds with one scone to liberate language from the bondage of speciesism? Today's guest is the vegan/animal rights author of a trilogy of novels, literature that does not accept animal exploitation as a given.
Author Maya Cohen-Ronen discovered speciesism-free fiction books are very difficult to find. Fiction that deliberately promotes animal rights and veganism is all too rare. It was this realization that led her to write The Liberation Trilogy, a series of dystopian suspense novels with a strong female lead and an ethical message, suitable for vegans and pre-vegans.
Now, Maya discusses the importance of compassion in language and the connection between feminism and animal liberation.
Here is how you can read her work: The trilogy on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092DXFKWY
When cyclist Dotsie Bausch quit dairy at 37, many in her circle warned it would jeopardize her Olympic dreams. The opposite happened. Her athletic recovery and performance went through the roof and propelled her forward to victory in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Now, she has a message for other athletes and consumers worldwide. Dotsie founded switch4good.org to spread the word. A growing number of Olympic athletes are joining the call to ditch dairy now!
It was pretty mind blowing; without animal foods, my recovery time sped up and my output increased, Bausch shares. I had more energy and was able to gain more strength and in the end, was able to leg press 585 pounds x 60 reps x 5 sets without animals on my plate. The guys in the gym just scratched their heads watching me.
Explaining what drives her to reach and educate others, Bausch explains, I want folks to be better informed and experience the secret to overall health and performance, be more disease resistant, and be aware of the lies the dairy industry perpetuates to us—which are motivated entirely by profit, not the betterment of our health or our planet.
In addition to all the outreach work and resources she provides through Switch4Good, Bausch starred in James Cameron's The Game Changers (one of the most-watched documentary on Netflix) and gave an Olympic Level Compassion TED talk. Dotsie co-hosts a popular Switch4Good podcast (.5M downloads, listeners in 90 countries, 130+ episodes). And, she spoke before Congress to help change U.S. dietary guidelines.
Going vegan is actually quite popular. A recent Ipsos survey revealed a 300% increase in Americans becoming vegan from 2004 to 2019. A vegetarian eats no meat. Vegans also don't consume dairy or other animal products.
What I've learned about dairy – the industry itself, and consuming it – would simply shock 95% of the population, Bausch explained. It's as eye opening as it is upsetting. Dairy makes most people sick. Nearly 70% of the global population (and 70-95% of minorities) are lactose intolerant. Basically, the majority of people get sick if they consume any dairy at all. A National Institutes of Health report stated that approximately 65 percent of the human population has a reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. Symptoms of lactose intolerance include abdominal cramping, bloating, and diarrhea. Eliminating the dairy helps people have more comfortable gut health.

Vegan dog food is trending. Shark Tank's Mark Cuban made a splash when he invested in a vegan kibble with the cameras rolling! That's just one of many vegan dog food products out there. Now, there's research into the benefits of a plant-based diet for dogs. Here to discuss is respected veterinarian Dr. Tonatiuh (Tona) Melgarejo, a Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Western University of Health Sciences in California. JaneUnChained.com's Jane Velez-Mitchell does the interview.
The CDC says, “Scientists estimate that more than 6 out of every 10 known infectious diseases in people can be spread from animals, and 3 out of every 4 new or emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals.” So, you’d think our government would do whatever it could to discourage wet markets, which are retail slaughterhouses, where customers take home the carcass right after the animal is slaughtered on site. But, no, our government is doing very little to counteract that danger. Now, there’s a proposed law in Los Angeles that would “prohibit the sale of living or ‘live' animals slaughtered on demand for consumption in specialty markets in the city of Los Angeles.” But, it’s stalled. Sign the petition in support here: http://www.pawpac.org/LAmarkets/signon/ There is a similar effort in NYC, where more than 80 wet markets operate. Get the inside scoop on the fastest growing sector of the food industry: plant-based products. Dairy alternatives are experiencing explosive growth. The wildly popular vegan oat milk maker Oatly went public in May of 2021 and was swiftly valued at $10 billion. This is just the latest sign that the consumer move to vegan products is a skyrocketing trend. Compassion in World Farming has a new Evaluate Your Plate calculator. The calculator is a first-of-its-kind, interactive tool that takes a comprehensive look at what you eat and how it impacts climate change and the world around us – beyond greenhouse gases to land and water use, pollution, biodiversity loss, and impact on animals. Says CIFW, “If people continue to simply swap beef for chicken and fish, as they have been led to believe is the environmentally-friendly choice, we will inadvertently accelerate the destruction of our planet.
The Evaluate Your Plate calculator's goal is to illustrate the positive impact of making more space on our plates for the foods we know are good for ourselves and our planet – fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plant-based proteins. This is not an all or none proposition. Even small changes, be they daily, weekly, or monthly, can have a big impact when taken collectively. Visit ciwf.com to learn more. Now, JaneUnChained.com's Jane Velez-Mitchell interviews Compassion in World Farming's Mandy Carter and Jeff Doyle.

The Agriculture Fairness Alliance is looking for 43 champions who could literally save the world from an environmental apocalypse. AFA sends lobbyists into the halls of Congress to educate members of Congress, U.S. senators, and their staff, about the reality of animal agriculture’s devastating impact on the climate, human health, world hunger, habitat destruction, wildlife extinction, and pollution… and the connection between animal abuse and pandemics. But, these lobbyists need funding! Currently, agriculturefairnessalliance.org has ONE lobbyist doing an amazing job and getting a great reception. But, more are needed to counter the influence of the meat/dairy/pharmaceutical industrial complex. Time is of the essence. Right now, the government is deciding how to cope with climate change. Animal agriculture is a blind spot that we ignore at own peril. Vegans, animal lovers and environmentalists are being called on to pitch in, so AFA can hire more lobbyists. AFA is looking for people to give monthly to support the monthly paycheck of their lobbyists. Champions will get regular zoom updates from the lobbyists themselves and answer questions. In this Voice America Radio discussion, AFA’s Laura Reese talks to JaneUnChained.com's Jane Velez-Mitchell about this exciting opportunity. Animals are not things. They are living, breathing, thinking, feeling beings. That’s why In Defense of Animals and Animals & Media are calling for an update to the Associated Press Stylebook’s recommendation on the use of personal pronouns for nonhuman animals. They are joined by more than 80 respected leaders and scholars in animal advocacy and conservation who support this change, including renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, biologists Dr. Marc Bekoff and Dr. Jonathan Balcombe, and leaders of organizations such as Center for Biological Diversity, Animal Legal Defense Fund, Mercy For Animals, Encompass, Animals & Society Institute, Animal Outlook, Nonhuman Rights Project, Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School, JaneUnChained News and other media organizations, such as Sentient Media, We Animals Media, the Journal of Critical Animal Studies and Animal Sentience journal. The scientific consensus is that nonhuman animals are conscious beings — someone not something — and the language we use should reflect that. Here to talk about it with JaneUnChained.com's Jane Velez-Mitchell is IDA’ s Alicia Graef.
So often the roadblock to living an optimally healthful life is… family. There are so many misconceptions that powerful interests promote to try and get parents to feed their children cow’s milk, which — because we’re not cows - is not healthy and can foster health problems. Ditto for meat consumption, which can lead to preventable illnesses like heart disease. Processed meat, which includes deli slices and bacon, has officially been declared to be a carcinogen by the World Health Organization, something media and doctors rarely mention. Details here: https://bit.ly/3c8SSxO Now, two amazing health experts set the record straight in a new book! Nourish: The Definitive Plant-Based Nutrition Guide for Families (November 2020, Health Communications, Inc.) - The authors have recently been featured in Real Simple, PopSugar, Alicia Silverstone’s The Kind Life and on Cincy Lifestyle, WFLA Daytime and IG Lives with Kathy Freston, Dr. Michael Greger and more! Veganism is skyrocketing. More and more Americans are identifying themselves as plant-based. Reports from publications, like The Beet, say veganism is growing fastest in the African-American community! Today, we’re talking to powerful leaders of that movement who are involved in the Veguary campaign. Veguary is a FREE month-long pledge campaign encouraging people to commit to vegan living during the month of February. “This campaign is purposefully situated in the month of February - Black History Month in the United States - to highlight the contributions of Black trailblazers, and the many benefits of vegan living in communities of color.” To learn more visit afrovegansociety.org/veguary.
“‘Ethical veganism’ is a protected class akin to religion in the U.K. after a landmark ruling.” So blared a headline in the Washington Post. Now, meet the man who made that happen! Jordi Casamitjana argued that he was fired from his job at an animal rights organization after telling colleagues that the group’s pension funds invested in companies that experiment on animals. The United Kingdom’s Equality Act says, in order to be covered as a protected class, the belief must be “genuinely held; be a belief and not an opinion or viewpoint based on the present state of information available; be a belief as to a weighty and substantial aspect of human life and behavior; attain a certain level of cogency, seriousness, cohesion and importance; and be worthy of respect in a democratic society, compatible with human dignity and not conflict with the fundamental rights of others.” Well, that certainly defines veganism. JaneUnChained.com founder Jane Velez-Mitchell interviews Jordi.
Our food system, our health care system, our national response to the pandemic, and our battle against climate change. It's all in shambles. Why? Because we fail to address the root cause of each one of these problems. That root cause is modern-day, industrialized animal agriculture. It is literally destroying our planet. We're in a pandemic brought on by a zoonotic illness, meaning it jumped from animals to humans. Yet few speak of how to prevent the next pandemic, which could come from a concentrated animal feeding operation for poultry, pigs or cows, where animals are kept in cramped, unsanitary conditions and pumped with antibiotics. Now, Dr. Sailesh Rao, systems analyst and founder of ClimateHealters.org, talks to us about how we can all be part of the solution and bring about the greatest transformation in human history: evolving beyond killing. Please listen to this brilliant engineer and his solution to the biggest problems plaguing humankind.
Former Pittsburgh Steeler Weslye Saunders talks plant-based health with Better Food Foundation’s Laura Cascada! Jane Velez-Mitchell hosts. DefaultVeg is the simple idea of reframing what we think of as normal to plant-based foods. This strategy, which is simply setting the default to be the plant-based option instead of the other way around, has been adopted by 50+ institutions from Harvard Sustainability to the American Lung Association to reduce their environmental footprints. Now, DefaultVeg has a campaign featuring rapper Grey, actor Jillian Rose Reed, former NFL player Weslye Saunders, famed race car driver Leilani Munter, and TV host Stephanie Gerard encouraging folks to start a more resilient default with their holiday meals. What would Jesus say about modern-day, industrialized animal agriculture, where 60,000 hens are crammed into a giant windowless warehouse, where baby calves are ripped from their bellowing mothers, where chickens are debeaked, where tails are sliced off because they just get in the way? Here's another question. What's it like to be a vegan minister in a time of such massive, yet widely accepted, cruelty? That's the question we address in this broadcast as we speak with a modern reverend who is also a vegan. Now, meet Reverend Sarah Bowen for a life-changing discussion.
White Coat Waste is a powerhouse advocate for animals in our nation's capital, focusing on ending unnecessary, wasteful, and horrifically cruel experiments on animals that are taxpayer-funded. The organization has had a lot of success exposing how absurd most of these experiments are. From constipation to cannibalism, the excuses these pseudo-scientists use to subject animals to extreme suffering would be laughable... except that the torture these animals endure is tragic. If an individual did to one animal what these fake scientists do to thousands, they'd be arrested on animal cruelty charges. We're talking about agencies like the Veterans Administration, National Institutes of Health, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration, to name a few. Now, learn about how this organization is speaking truth to power, while exposing and ending these barbaric practices. Visit whitecoatwaste.org to get involved.

Pandemic: that's the word that best defines 2020. It held us all in its grip, some more tragically than others. What can we learn from this experience? How can we prevent it from happening again? What is the connection to veganism? COVID-19 is a zoonotic illness that jumped from animals to humans. Whether you believe the likely scenario that it first cropped up in a retail slaughter market in China or not... it is a zoonotic illness. The details don't change that essential fact. If we lived in a vegan world, where animals were not exploited, tortured & killed for food, clothing, industry. etc, we would not be experiencing this crisis.

It's a breakthrough in the fight to end animal testing! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just launched Innovative Science and Technology Approaches for New Drugs aka ISTAND. This pilot program will help reduce and replace animal testing as part of drug development. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has worked toward this goal for several years by meeting with the FDA and Congress and providing expert input, hosting Congressional briefings, and leading drug development stakeholders in advocating for a pathway for the approval of nonanimal, human-biology based drug testing methods. PCRM's Elizabeth Baker breaks down this breakthrough!

HIDDEN: Animals in the Anthropocene is an unflinching book of photography documenting our relationship with non-human animals in the 21st century, as depicted through the lenses of 40 award-winning photojournalists. It focuses on the invisible animals in our lives: those with whom we have a close relationship and yet fail to see. They are the animals we eat and the animals we wear. They are the animals used in research and for entertainment, as well as the animals we sacrifice in the name of tradition and religion. The stories within its pages are revelatory and brutal. As we enter a new decade, about 80 billion land animals continue to be used and consumed by humans each year. The majority of these animals are raised and killed within industrial agricultural systems. As a scandal swept through the meat industry, a summit was held to end animal agriculture by helping farmers and ranchers thrive on their land without using animals. As vegan leaders were brainstorming with ranchers and farmers about how to transition out of sending animals to slaughter, a leading meat company was making headlines for all the wrong reasons. A lawsuit alleges Tyson slaughterhouse managers were placing money bets on how many of their workers would come down with COVID. Tyson's CEO says the allegations upset him and are not in keeping with the company's core values. What do our panelists think?
Woodstock Farm Sanctuary in High Falls, New York is a state of the art farmed animal sanctuary where every Thanksgiving is celebrated with a touching and joyous ThanksLIVING ceremony. In this scenario, the turkeys, rescued from the horrors of modern day, intensive, factory farming, are not eaten. Instead, humans feed THEM delectable treats like cranberries and pies. The turkeys really enjoy the celebration. The humans get to see these magnificent beings for who they are: individuals, each with a unique personality. Woodstock Farm Sanctuary has a host of really innovative programs. During COVID, you can get a digital tour! You can also sponsor a turkey, chicken, cow or one of the other farm animals. It makes a great gift. Sanctuaries are one of the few places, in the modern day world, where people can experience animals that are otherwise treated as mere property. Often, people leave with a totally different attitude toward animals. They stop eating them!
We live in a finite world where we are consuming resources at a rate that is simply not sustainable. We will run out of life's essentials if we don't adapt. Having Kids is an organization that urges vegans to expand their view of the practice to include advocacy for better family planning: https://havingkids.org/real-animal-rights-starts-with-fair-start-family-planning.
Led by famed attorney Carter Dillard, the organization would love activists to go beyond consumption and think in terms of building nonhuman inclusive futures. Having Kids is accomplishing this through implementation of a universal family planning model called Fair Start. Groups like PETA are signing on to the effort here: https://havingkids.org/organizations-joining-for-world-population-day-at-the-u-n/

It's no wonder that humans often act out this prejudice against animals. So, today, we're coming up with kind alternatives to the following 6 phrases: Weasel Out, Not My First Rodeo, Fishy, Pig Out, Whack-a-Mole, Bigger Fish to Fry. Join us and come up with your own kind alternatives!

On October 13th, 2020, the New York Times held a virtual talk entitled: Feeding the World! The world’s most influential newspaper has huge power to shape cultural norms. So, four vegans attended. What we heard shocked and dismayed us. There was little discussion of global hunger. According to the NYT’s own reporting, “an estimated 265 million people could be pushed to the brink of starvation by year’s end.” There was scant discussion of big picture solutions and more talk of the availability of turkeys and other animal products. There was no proactive mention of plant-based solutions even though at least 36 percent of the world's crop calories are used for animal feed. Animals are an extremely inefficient food source, eating far more than they produce as food. Why no mention? Vegan product sales are booming across the U.S., outpacing overall food growth by more than five times. The Times is invited on to respond at any time, as are any of the NYT panel speakers.
Sales of vegan food products are skyrocketing. The Good Food Institute reports that the plant-based food category has grown five times faster than overall U.S. food sales, which also saw an increase of 2.2 percent in 2019, So, what are the products propelling us to a plant-based culture, for human health, climate change reversal, the eradication of world hunger, the prevention of future pandemics and compassion to animals? Cool Beans, the latest innovation in the fast-growing whole-food, plant-based, frozen foods category, now has three of its portable wraps for sale at Sprouts Farmers Markets nationwide. Cool Beans describes its wraps as a wholesome, delicious, minimally processed product that focuses on taste and nutrition.“ As Americans strive to get healthier and slim down, they are turning to the increasing number of plant-based options in supermarkets! Now, learn how the frozen food section is rapidly going vegan.
In a shocking development, and while people are focused on the COVID-19 crisis, the gas industry has been caught doing an end-run around the will of the public, which is rising up against the horrific plan to bulldoze the Ballona Wetlands, LA’s last coastal wetlands in Playa del Rey whose 640 acres is teeming with 1,700 species of animals and plants, some endangered.
During public meetings, community leaders have denounced the plan to bulldoze the wetlands, which is being pushed by allies of the fossil fuel industry. The agenda of this phony “restoration” plan is to allow the gas industry to excavate the wetlands and refurbish crumbling gas infrastructure which lies underneath and throughout this ecological reserve, and extend the life of this facility which contributes to climate change.
Could compassionate companies save the world by donating some or all of their profits to vegan charities? We discuss with Margaux Khoury. She is the co-founder of IMPACT: a company founded by vegan activists that donates 100% of after-tax profits to animal liberation. CreateAnImpact.org
Safe for the earth, safe for the animals, safe for all humans, is a tag line. But, this high-quality, low-footprint deodorant is more than just a product. It's a gateway to a new movement. Margaux explains her corporate giving model and her hope that other vegan, cruelty-free companies follow suit. Animal agriculture is the number #1 problem the world faces today, as a leading cause of deforestation, habitat destruction, wildlife extinction, climate change, human world hunger and human disease. Yet, only a tiny fraction of all charitable giving goes to the vegan movement. Let's talk about it! It's the vegonomy! Support the vegonomy! Sign up at plantbasedneighbor.com

The Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve is under assault... from people and organizations that claim to be pro-environment. They plan to completely bulldoze over the 640 acres that form Ballona Wetlands, the last coastal wetlands in Los Angeles, in the Playa del Rey region. And, with some nerve, the proponents claim this obliteration is actually a restoration. 1,700 species call this pristine sliver of wildlife home. They would all be pushed out.. wiped out. We are talking foxes, owls, egrets, lizards.. and many, many other species. Critics say the real agenda is to allow the fossil fuel industry to get in there are refurbish the crumbling gas infrastructure that lies beneath the wetlands. Some of the key proponents have gotten funding from the fossil fuel industry. If this can happen in progressive, environmentally-friendly LA, it will open the floodgates for the destruction of wetlands everywhere! How can you help? Watch, share. In a huge animal rights victory, Paragon Sports has announced it will no longer sell goods that feature real fur, which includes Canada Goose fur collared parkas, after this winter, when it apparently plans to clear out its last remaining fur items.
This victory is thanks to a relentless, 3-year campaign by some of New York City's leading animal rights activists, whom you'll meet on this broadcast, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which has long led the movement against killing fur-bearing animals to turn them into coats or collars.
The fierce, strategic campaign against fur has focused on Canada Goose, which had resisted the fur-free trend embraced by so many other top designers. But, in April, the New York Times reported, Canada Goose announced that starting in 2022, the company will no longer buy new fur from trappers. What does that mean? Here's the latest from TheirTurn.net's Donny Moss and his team of amazing animal rights.
Risk not Race! That’s the threat when it comes to getting very sick or dying of COVID-19. While news media reports that minorities are particularly at risk for suffering the most serious consequences of the virus, world famous cardiologist Kim Williams, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and its former President, says that stat is really a distortion. Poor diet contributes to the underlying conditions of obesity, heart disease and other illness which increase anyone’s risk of suffering the worst of COVID. Those underlying conditions, caused by meat and dairy laden diets, disproportionately affect people of color. All the more reason to eat plant-based. JaneUnChained.com for more.

When the coronavirus showed up and shattered all of our lives, many people learned - for the first time - about live slaughter markets. Yes, China was the focus, at first, because the first reported cases of coronavirus stemmed from a slaughter market in China. But, did you know that there are thousands of wet slaughter markets, retail slaughterhouses, in the US? Big cities, like New York, have lots of them. Today, we discuss the dangers these markets potentially pose and how there is growing movement to shut them down!
The Black Lives Matter movement has exploded across American. Largely, it's a movement about power and who has it. Protests are powerful. But, in today's society, money is the real power. Today, we talk to two members of Vegan Outreach about the intersection between Black Lives Matter and other social justice movements and veganism.
Twenty years ago there were only a handful of VegFests around the world. One of the earliest one was WorldFest in Los Angeles, which then became VegFestLA, attracting upwards of 20,000 people every May. Central Coast VegFest is one of the newer entrants but took off with a bang, drawing huge crowds in February to beautiful San Luis Obispo. But, this year, the coronavirus has forced VegFests around the world to shut down, go virtual or.. just skip a year.. or maybe two, So, what's next for VegFests, popular events that veganize people with amazing plant-based food, great speakers and cruelty-free shopping? We will find out with three of the top VegFest organizers on the west coast.

She suffered from allergies, asthma, sinus conditions, seasonal depression and lack of energy. Then, she woke up and realized she didn't have to live that way. What changed? She discovered plant-based eating and found that her ailments had vanished and she was left with non-stop energy. Today, Gina promotes a vegan diet through her books and public speaking events. Gina runs a vegan training program and is relentless in spreading the word! Get healthy and happy: eat plants, not animals!
Gene Baur has been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time magazine. For more than 25 years he has traveled extensively around the country, campaigning to raise awareness about the abuses of industrialized factory farming.
Recently, Gene made waves with his thought provoking Op-Ed piece in The Guardian entitled: It's time to dismantle factory farms and get used to eating less meat. He tells it like it is and speaks truth to power, noting Slaughterhouses are a breeding ground for disease and hotspots for coronavirus, and dozens closed after thousands of workers became ill. President Trump ordered these operations open, and shielded them from legal liability for exposing disempowered workers to intolerable risks. At the same time, the government is spending $200m per month to support the meat and dairy industries, while agribusiness lobbies for more stimulus money to return to killing as normal. Now, hear from Gene Baur himself.
Regan Russell was a beloved, relentless and skilled activist who – for more than forty years – devoted her life to advocating for voiceless animals. But, in an instant, she was silenced, run over and killed, on Friday, June 19th, by a truck packed with pigs as it headed to a slaughterhouse in Burlington, Ontario in Canada. Protests and blockades have now erupted at the spot where Regan was run down, as a scrum of media assembled to hear from the victim’s family and fellow animal rights advocates. Save Movement founder Anita Krajnc spoke, promising global mobilization in honor of Regan Russell’s life, cut short as she was advocating for compassion to other sentient beings with whom we share this planet.
The Invisible Vegan is a 90-minute independent documentary that explores the problem of unhealthy dietary patterns in the African-American community and the health transformation that occurs with a switch to a vegan diet. It also explores African-American history as it pertains to food. The documentary begins with the personal story of Jasmine Leyva, a 30-year-old black actress and filmmaker currently based in Los Angeles. Over the past seven years, Leyva has committed herself to veganism, both in lifestyle and research. This amazing documentary is steaming now on Amazon Prime Video! Vegan NBA legend John Salley is just one of the stars profiled in this film. You have to check it out. Now, hear Jasmine's story!
As we experience a national uprising in solidarity against racism, Dr Milton Mills helps us look at the issue from the angles of human health and environment. Environmental racism and dietary racism are terms unfamiliar to many. However, millions of African-American citizens are experiencing the ill-effects of both. Dr Mills has spoken truth to power at the USDA about its dietary guidelines pushing unhealthy dairy on minority school kids. Dr Mills also tells us about the ill-effects of factory farms on surrounding minority communities. Then, there's the exploitation of slaughterhouse workers, who are overwhelmingly people of color. His understanding of the history of food is fascinating. Dr Mills explains how minorities often underwrite exploitation by supporting companies that support oppression. The most powerful tool we have is our money. Making smart consumer choices can result in taking back the power. Dr Mills is featured on: What The Health & The Invisible Vegan.
We talk to NY Times bestselling author Dr Michael Greger about his book: How to Survive a Pandemic. He is also the author of many other acclaimed books including HOW NOT TO DIE. Dr Greger's knowledge of infectious diseases, from tuberculosis and measles to AIDS and COVID-19, is deep. He explains their origin: human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these infections—both pre-existing ones and those newly identified—have sparked some of the deadliest plagues in history. Dr Greger will answer these questions: How did these diseases come about? What can we do to prevent future pandemics? What is the role of industrialized animal agriculture in this crisis? Followed by a panel discussion.
With the coronavirus believed to have started in a wet market in China, there is an outcry against these bloody and unsanitary retail slaughter markets. But, did you know there are thousands in the Unite States? Yes, in New York City alone, there are more than 80 such markets where a wide variety of animals are slaughtered as the buyer waits to pick up the carcass. Now, Social Compassion in Legislation is proposing legislation to end these establishments in the U.S. Legislation discussed in this broadcast include bills to ban wet markets and possession of endangered species from Africa. And we will explain California's blood bank bill. So much to discuss!

Right now, during the virus pandemic, restaurants across the globe are struggling. Many have shuttered. Others are trying to find their footing. We are focusing on vegan restaurants because our culture must transition to plant-based to avoid future pandemics. The coronavirus began in a meat market. So did SARS! Let's learn from this tragedy to avoid any more pandemics in future. Let's help people transition to healthful, compassionate meals that don't involve animals or their by-products. Two top vegan restaurants from either coast speak out!
Coronavirus has brought 21st Century human culture to a standstill as nature says: time out. Go to your room and think about how you are treating the natural world and the animals in it. This catastrophe began in a slaughterhouse in China. You can call it a wet market. You can call it a live market. You can call it a meat market. It's all the same. Innocent animals were being unnecessarily slaughtered in a cesspool of filth, feces, urine, blood, guts and bone. Every slaughterhouse has all of these horrific ingredients. Consumer Reports studied hundreds of pounds of ground beef and found 100% contained fecal matter. Now, the young visionary Ryuji Chua, aka PeaceByVegan, speaks to us about the lessons nature is offering. His partner Rain Bruno, a vegan artist/activist, lends her perspective as well.

Many people choose veganism as a logical and sensible response to their concerns about animals, the environment, and/or their health. But despite their positive intentions and the personal benefits they experience, they’re often met with resistance from friends, family members, and society at large. These external factors can make veganism socially diffi- cult—and emotionally exhausting—to sustain. This leads to an unfortunate reality: the majority of vegans (and vegetarians) revert back to consuming meat, dairy, or eggs—breaching their own values and sabotaging their own goals in the process. Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, known as “The Joyful Vegan,” has guided countless individ- uals through the process of becoming vegan. Now, in her seventh book, The Joyful Vegan, she shares her insights into why some people stay vegan and others stop.
We discuss the terrible toll coronavirus is having and how it stems from abuse of animals in the food system, which is believed to have emanated from China's wet meat markets. We also chat about positive things happening as society wakes up and transitions to a plant-based lifestyle! From new TV shows to new books, change is accelerating!
Rowdy Girl Sanctuary founder Renee King-Sonnen talks about the rise of her Texas rescue into a force for social change! Hear her incredible story: It all started with Rowdy Girl, a little 2 month old baby calf that my husband wanted me to care for, hoping I would start wanting to be a 'good' rancher's wife. I bought her for $300 having no idea that she would take me down the rabbit hole where I would come out on the other side of compassion for all sentient beings – even the ones that used to end up on my plate. The rest they say is her-story.
Becoming vegan for me has been a result of living on the Sonnen Ranch, now Rowdy Girl Sanctuary with my multi-generational cattle rancher husband – I couldn’t take the red trailer leaving with the babies anymore – As a result I started watching documentaries and slaughterhouse videos and when I made the corner, I’ve never looked back. Forever Vegan!

Coffee lovers who indulge in the world’s priciest brew may have no idea they’re sipping on a cup of animal cruelty. An investigator from Los-Angeles based animal rights organization Lady Freethinker visited multiple locations in Bali, Indonesia selling kopi luwak – coffee made by feeding civet cats, also called luwaks, coffee cherries and collecting their excrement – and documented the filthy, miserable conditions of the captive animals.
LFT’s investigator found:
Dozens of tourist attractions in Bali forcing these wild, solitary and nocturnal animals together in cages for noisy tourists to gawk at all day long.
These tourist traps cage civets purely for display, then sell luwak coffee sourced from deplorable, factory-style farms where conditions are even worse.
One local Luwak coffee farm held civets in tiny, filthy, barren wire cages, stacked on top of one another with no visible food or water. The rows of cages also held roosters and dogs – likely to slaughter.
Vegan expert Tracye McQuirter, MPH, will give black women the support they need to go vegan, get healthy, and feel great for life. “The 10,000 Black Vegan Women program will help 10,000 African American women go vegan in 2020 to live longer, healthier lives,” says Tracye McQuirter. “Although we have a long history of plant-based pioneers and activists, including Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Angela Davis and others, we also have the most to gain from the health benefits of eating plant-based foods because we experience the highest rates of preventable, diet-related diseases in the country.” With animal agriculture being the leading cause of global warming, the 10,000 Black Vegan Women program gives women of color an opportunity to do something good for their mind, body and the environment, too. “I want to truly change the health paradigm of black women. We are leaders in so many progresive ways, but we are in a crisis when it comes to our health.
U.S. House Takes Action on Legislation to End the Brutal Butcher of American Equines
The U.S. House held hearings on the slaughter of American horses for overseas markets for human consumption.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Health Subcommittee heard testimony on the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act, H.R. 961.
The Senate companion, S. 2006, was introduced by U.S. Sens. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) last year.
Marty Irby of Animal Wellness Action spoke before the U.S. House. “The slaughter of our iconic American equines is cruel and terrifying, and these creatures have done nothing to warrant this.”
The slaughter of American equines for human consumption killed 70,000 horses in 2018–most of them perfectly healthy. Horse slaughter is cruelty and suffering: The horses are transported long distances without food or water.
Wild horses are also at risk, as some groups have put forth a dangerous proposal to roundup 130,000 wild horses.
After years of campaigning by Animal Outlook (formerly Compassion Over Killing), Starbucks may finally be catching up with the sizzling demand for vegan food by teasing a meaty vegan breakfast item. In a new sustainability commitment on its US website, the coffee giant declares, “From more plant-based food and beverages to reusables, Starbucks is looking far and wide for opportunities to transform.”
With this update, Starbucks has finally inked into writing a commitment Animal Outlook has been urging years. Since 2018, Animal Outlook has attended Starbucks’ annual shareholder meetings to urge it to brew up meaningful and substantial vegan food items for its millions of customers to enjoy with their dairy-free coffee. What will 2020 bring? We invite Starbucks reps on Voice America Radio and JaneUnChained any time to offer their perspective and respond! Animal Outlook (formerly Compassion Over Killing) is a national nonprofit 501(c)(3) animal advocacy organization based in DC.
Slaughter Free Cities is a movement that seeks to end the destructive role animal agriculture plays in society. Meat is a leading cause of human disease, climate change and animal suffering. Right now in NYC, Slaughter Free Cities and the Animal Save Movement are coming together with local New York organizers as a unity effort to help Slaughter Free Cities generate widespread impact throughout 2020 and beyond. The Save Movement is based on the moral imperative of bearing witness to suffering and not turning away. Currently, the Save Movement has more than 600 vigils at slaughterhouses around the world. The goal is a vigil at every slaughterhouse on the planet.
Animal welfare and environmental protection organizations often overlook how the food served at their events and fundraisers may conflict with their missions. Animal shelters will serve animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens as food (e.g. burgers, ice cream, or even a pig roast) to raise funds for the cats and dogs they rescue under the missions of promoting compassion for animals or reducing the suffering of animals. Likewise, environmental and wildlife groups will serve animal products at their events even though animal agriculture is one of the leading causes of climate change and species extinction. Food for Thought works with these organizations to align their menu with their missions.

Social Compassion In Legislation (SCIL) scored massive victories for animals in 2019. We review them all and talk about the impact California, the world's 5th largest economy, has on the world at large. SCIL has been a vanguard voice sponsoring landmark legislation since our founding in 2007. Whether local, state, or federal our mission is saving and protecting animals. Social Compassion In Legislation's achievements have transcended into many other states also passing SCIL's sponsored humane laws. Thanks to Social Compassion In Legislation, the animals have a strong voice in the halls of the Capitol. SCIL's vision is to instill greater compassion into society for the welfare of all animals
All across the United States, people are transforming their lives with a plant-based diet. They are beating heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, obesity and cancer, and they want you to know that trying a vegan diet could change – or save – your life, too.
In association with her organization’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ campaign, and working alongside Earthlings film Director Shaun Monson, and filmmakers Bobby Sud and Alessio Schiazza, Naomi Hallum is endeavoring to tell the stories of people across the United States whose lives have been positively transformed by the switch to a plant-based vegan lifestyle. Since the launch of the campaign on Dec 1st, these stories have been seen by a global audience of over 9 million, and have inspired over 20,000 people (and counting) to go vegan this January. For every person that signs up to try vegan this January, Million Dollar Vegan is giving $1 to animal sanctuaries.
There is an epic battle between animal activists seeking to reveal the institutional cruelty of modern day factory farming and the industry itself, which seeks to paint a bucolic image of happy farm animals.
This struggle is playing out across the globe, in the US, Europe, Latin America and, now in particular, Canada!
This podcast focuses on the animal rights movement in Canada, where activists are being arrested as pro-ag industry politicians push for laws to quash undercover investigations and the fast growing campaign to bear witness at slaughterhouses, a movement that began in Ontario, Canada.
There is outrage over a planned bear hunt in New Jersey and critics say the current governor, Phil Murphy, promised to stop the bear hunt and needs to live up to that promise. The action point is simple. Call Governor Phil Murphy at 609 292-6000 and say NO to the bear hunt. Critics say the governor can stop it with an executive order.
With wild animal populations being decimated across the globe, now is not the time for weekend warriors to head out in a densely populated state with guns to target bears. For those who believe there is a problem with bears encroaching on homes and lawns, there are non-lethal methods: bear proof garbage cans are very effective.
We speak with Angi Metler, the head of the Animal Protection League of NJ and Bill Crain, who garnered publicity after he was arrested for protesting the bear hunt.
Elephants are ripped away from their families and broken in horrific torture scenarios in order to make them tame enough to provide rides for tourists. The videos of the training are the stuff of nightmares. When abducted from the wild, elephant families are separated, gunned down and otherwise violated.
All this so that tourists, who think they love elephants, can hop on one and ride them through the streets of India. It's morally indefensible and must be stopped. The way to stop it is simple! Simply... refuse to ride.
Shop For Rescues just may be the first cruelty free online pet supplies retailer using a socially responsible business model known as compassionate commerce.
The mission for Shop For Rescues is to use the sale of its pet supplies to create a consistent non-traditional funding mechanism for 501(c)3’s involved with the rescue and transference of dogs, cats and horses from abusive homes, over crowded municipal shelters and kill environments.
Impressively, SFR can use up to 27.5% of its gross revenues from its e-commerce solution as this means of support with only the sale of its pet products and without the sale of customer data.
According to the founder of Shop For Rescues, Eric Turk, compassionate commerce is about social accountability; it is a paradigm shift in the purpose of revenue supported by the exchange of goods and services.
A panel of vegan/animal rights activists, who have attended the climate strike events, talk about how their message has been received by the greater environmental community. Teenage Nobel Prize nominee Greta Thunberg's shifting focus is also a topic. Why isn't she talking about animal agriculture's devastating impact on the climate and massive contribution to climate change? Why do some studies say animal ag contributes 14.5% to climate change, while more recent studies have said 51%. What about the new white paper that says animal agriculture is responsible for at least 87% of greenhouse gas emissions? If that's correct, could the environmental movement be pointing in the wrong direction? Could a mistake that misidentifies the biggest cause of climate change be catastrophic?
So much happening in the vegan/animal rights world! This weekend California Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law key legislation to protect animals! Now, California will become the first state to ban the sale and manufacture of new fur products! This is a massive victory that animal advocates believe will encourage other states to follow suit and spell the end of this cruel and unnecessary industry. The California fur ban, which prohibits the sale or manufacture of clothing, shoes or handbags with fur, goes into effect in 2023. Fur sale bans are already in place in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Fur Information Council of America is threatening to sue. On top of that, California has become the third state to ban all animals, except for domestic dogs, cats and horses, from circus performances! Animal advocates believe this spells the beginning of the end of animals in circuses everywhere.
Some politicians deny climate change. That's bad. Other politicians say it's real but continue to engage in behaviors that cause climate change. That's bad too. Presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren recently said we shouldn't get distracted by cheeseburgers and plastic straws. She's wrong. We need to focus on animal agriculture and plastic because both are killing our planet. Others decry climate change while chowing down on fried chicken or steak. Animal agriculture is the leading culprit of habitat destruction, wildlife extinction, water pollution and human world hunger. On this show, we discuss the hypocrisy in today's current environmental movement and what one woman is doing to change that!

Along with the seven variations of the Huel powder (including a gluten-free option), Huel has launched a number of nutritionally complete products.
Dolly Vyas-Ahuja's grandfather marched with Gandhi in India. Now, Dolly - who hails from Texas - has gone back to India to fight for the freedom of animals tortured for dairy. While India has a strong vegetarian tradition, it is also a huge consumer of dairy. Dolly is making a documentary about her effort to convince the people of India that stealing the breast milk of cows, and ripping away their babies in the process, is not in alignment with the values of their faith and their culture. The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members. Mahatma Gandhi
JaneUnChained went LIVE at the International Animal Rights Conference in Luxembourg this past week. Jane Velez Mitchell was there and brings us up to date on the amazing work being done by European animal rights organizations.

After learning that the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) advised people to kill green iguanas on their properties “whenever possible” and without specifying any particular killing methods, PETA dispatched a letter this morning to the agency pointing out that randomly killing these wonderful animals won’t curb their population in any significant way, whereas banning their import, possession, sale, exhibition, and breeding would actually reduce the numbers. PETA blasts the agency for taking a stopgap measure that doesn’t mandate or explain humane methods of killing.
PETA notes that untrained members of the public, including children, are ill-equipped to slaughter iguanas in a manner that destroys their brains and causes instant death, meaning that many of these sensitive animals will suffer before dying.
In the wake of horrific undercover footage by Animal Recovery Mission, showing violent calf/cow abuse at one America's largest, so-called humane dairy farms, the whole issue of dairy is being debated by the nation and the world. Why are we drinking the breast milk of another species? Is it good for us or bad for us?
How do we let Coca-Cola, a partner of Fairlife Milk, whose longtime supplier Fair Oaks is the farm caught abusing animals, know that it would be smarter and more profitable to switch to plant-based milks!
This week a protest took place outside the Chinese Consulate in Los Angeles. More than a hundred people demonstrated, demanding the Chinese government end the horrific dog meat trade in China, where pets are stolen from yards and right out of people's hands and then tortured to death! Yes, no exaggeration. The tormentors believe that torturing the dog makes the dog meat better at combating virility problems. This is sick. Many Chinese Americans are battling this horror and want to help the Chinese people, most of whom do not support this barbarism but are afraid to speak out because of the repressive government.
What can we in the United States do to stop this nightmare? Also, while we point the finger, should we also look in the mirror and admit our treatment of millions of factory farm animals is also barbaric and unnecessary.
Vegan hockey player Rick Scott has discovered the health benefits of a vegan diet and promotes plant-based eating to his fellow athletes. He talks about how his endurance has increased on a plant-based diet and how he can outlast hockey players half his age. Rick's focus is also on the dangers of dairy, the mother's milk of another species not designed for us.
8-year old Vegan Evan travels the US with his mom Shannon Blair, speaking wisdom that belies his years. The youngster is such an articulate spokesperson for a compassionate lifestyle. As soon as he finishes Voice America Radio, he will lead a protest against the cruelties of the dairy industry, as documented by (ARM) Animal Recovery Mission's months long undercover investigation of one of the nation's largest dairy farms.
Established by the non-profit Our Planet. Theirs Too. in 2011, The National Animal Rights Day (NARD) is an annual day observed in multiple countries around the world on the first Sunday in June, for the purpose of giving a voice to all animals and raising awareness for their rights, until all animals are free from enslavement and their rights are established and protected by law.
On this day, special NARD events are held simultaneously in major cities around the globe. They start with a Memorial Ceremony for the billions of animals who die every year by human hands, which often include some of the actual victims, and the reading and signing of The Declaration of Animal Rights. They end with a Celebration of the animals in our lives, and the steps that are being made every year towards ending animals' suffering and shifting humanity to a cruelty-free, plant-based (vegan) lifestyle.
These guests attended NARD and bring their perspective to the JaneUnChained audience!
A Prayer for Compassion is a feature length documentary that strives to inspire and encourage those already on a religious or spiritual path, to expand their circle of compassion to embrace all life, regardless of species, and make choices in alignment with this value.
Rowdy Girl Sanctuary's Renee King-Sonnen founded this Texas farm animal sanctuary in 2015 after realizing that she loved animals and, therefore, didn't want to exploit and kill them. Her husband Tommy had a cattle ranch and a calf-cow operation and she gave him an ultimatum. Now, they are both vegan and Renee has become a leader in the animal rights movement having founded the Ranchers Advocacy Program to help other farmers transition out of exploiting and killing animals to plant-based, veganic farming.
America's wild horses are in crisis! Roaming the lands, they are in the crosshairs of the cattle industry that would like to have those same lands for cattle grazing.
The Bureau of Land Management, which is the government agency that deals with wild horses, is described by critics as being under the control of the animal agriculture industry.
Two animal loving organizations are divided on how to deal with this issue. We will discuss a new proposal that some say will let the horses live. But, others say it's a sure way to kill them off.
Can more than 100 doctors be wrong? Can the more than 15,000 medical professionals who are part of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine be wrong? They are advocating a plant-based diet for good health! We will find out why!
The End of Meat is a groundbreaking documentary film envisioning a future where meat consumption belongs to the past. Although evidence of meat consumption's negative impact on the planet and on human health continue stacking up as animal welfare is on the decline, humanity's love affair with hamburgers, steaks, nuggets and chops just doesn’t end.
In Germany, home of bratwurst and schnitzel, meat is an integral part of the diet. That is, until a few years ago, when perceptions somewhat evolved. Health concerns and meat scandals led to a public debate about the ethical implications of meat consumption and the rise of plant-based diets. Meat producers launched their own vegan products; 100% vegan supermarkets opened; and almost every food manufacturer was adding and labeling vegan options. Is this the beginning of the end of meat? Are we approaching a turning point in the human-animal relationship.
Dani Rukin is a CEO and executive team leadership coach! Until a few years ago, Dani was an unapologetic meat eater. Today, she finds herself protesting outside the very restaurants where she used to dine.

Dani is now running animal activist trainings and shares her strategies for changing the world!

All of our guests attended the global student climate march on Friday, March 15th, 2018. Some went to the New York march and protest. Others went to the Los Angeles march and protest. All of our guests are vegans who raised the issue of animal agriculture's huge role in climate change, a subject mainstream environmentalists often avoid. The striking students, most high schoolers inspired by fellow student activist Greta Thunberg of Sweden, were aware that meat is not green. Many described themselves as mostly vegetarian. A few were vegan. Our guests discuss how to connect the growing global climate change awareness to the animal rights movement. Ellen Dent describes how she got on stage and took a stand for veganism.
Recently the Los Angeles Times did an amazing article on the Save Movement in general and the Los Angeles pig vigils in particular. Written by Gustavo Arellano, it decribed strangers offering water, love and comfort to the doomed pigs. The Save Movement is comprised of groups around the world who bear witness of pigs, cows, chickens and other farmed animals en route to slaughter. Our goals are to raise awareness about the plight of farmed animals, to help people become vegan, and to build a mass-based, grassroots animal justice movement. The Save Movement started in December 2010 with the inception of Toronto Pig Save. Today there are more than 600 vigil groups around the world. We encourage you to bear witness to animals sent to slaughter in your own community. Find out if there is a Save group near you or consider starting a Save group. We’ll help you with tips, resources, and support. Go to: TheSaveMovement.org

Campaign Victory: BOCA Confirms Most of Its Products are Now Vegan! Compassion Over Killing is excited to share this breaking news update about our campaign to persuade BOCA Foods to ditch dairy. Over the past few months, the company has eliminated all but 4 items with dairy. That means 8 of BOCA’s 12 products are now completely vegan! BOCA Brand Manager Eric Palmer confirmed in a statement to COK: “At BOCA, we understand there are consumers who follow a vegan lifestyle or who otherwise avoid dairy. The majority of BOCA’s products are now vegan, and we’ll continue to explore opportunities to expand those vegan offerings.” This encouraging shift towards more vegan options comes on the heals of COK’s efforts to ensure the company is aware of the growing demand for plant-based choices.
Between 25 and 100 million animals are killed in U.S. laboratories after suffering through cruel and unnecessary experiments. But why did we give you such a huge range? Why couldn’t we give you a more precise figure?
It’s because 95% of the animals used in research and testing are not covered by the Animal Welfare Act and the government is not required to report the number of these animals. This means that we have no idea how many birds, mice, rats, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and invertebrates suffer in labs. And yet, we do know, for example, how many hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits are used. What kind of sense does this make? None. The public has a right to know how many animals—the TRUE number—are suffering and dying in laboratories.
Jane Velez-Mitchell interviews Shannon Keith, the head of RescueFreedomProject.org. This organization negotiates with laboratories to get dogs and other animals out of cages and release them to good homes. Their organization became a global phenomenon after a video they produced went viral. It showed beagles, who were freed from labs, touching grass for the first time and experiencing freedom from a cage for the first time. You will cry.
The Animal Rights Movement is about achieving more basic rights for animals. A lot of that progress happens in the legal system. Different animals have different rights. Farm animals, 9 billion of whom are tortured and killed every year in America, have virtually no rights, far less than dogs and cats for example. You can do to a cow or a pig things that would land you in jail of you did them to a dog or a cat. Advancing Law for Animals is determined to change that.
