Let's talk about something super important today - the difference between symptoms and signs, especially when it comes to lower back pain. 👨‍⚕️💬

Symptoms are what you feel - that nagging ache in your lower back, for example. Signs, on the other hand, are what others can observe or measure, like restricted movement or muscle spasms. Understanding this difference is key to tackling your pain effectively! 💡

Did you know that around 80% of people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives? It's a staggering statistic! But here's the thing - you don't always have to resort to medication or surgery for relief. 🚫💊

Our bodies are incredible self-healers, and that's where spinal manipulation comes in. It's a natural approach that focuses on restoring proper alignment to your spine, addressing the root cause of your pain instead of just masking the symptoms. 🌿✨

Medications and surgeries may offer temporary relief, but they often come with risks and side effects. In contrast, spinal manipulation works with your body's innate healing abilities, promoting long-term wellness. It's like giving your body a helping hand in its own healing process! 🙌💆‍♂️

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I'm here to guide you through the journey towards a pain-free life, sans medication or surgery. Posture isn't just about standing up straight – it's about nurturing your body's natural alignment. Let's break it down:

1️⃣ Neutral Posture: Picture the Goldilocks position – not too slouched, not too stiff. Your spine is aligned, weight evenly distributed, reducing stress. It's your body's default setting for optimal functioning.

2️⃣ Forward Head Posture: Ever find yourself leaning forward, head jutting out? This common issue strains the neck and upper back, leading to lower back pain. Studies show up to 66% of people experience it at some point!

3️⃣ Slouched Posture: The arch-enemy of a healthy spine. Rounded shoulders and exaggerated curves put pressure on the lower back. Research links poor posture to chronic lower back pain.

But here's the exciting part – we can tap into your body's natural healing power through chiropractic care.

Spinal manipulation restores alignment, triggering your body's innate healing mechanisms.

Studies reveal it's more effective than medication in reducing lower back pain intensity.

Say goodbye to quick fixes – chiropractic care offers a holistic approach, working with your body for long-term relief.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I often find myself pondering a question that many people grapple with daily: Can you fix bad posture? It's a common concern, especially for those who experience lower back pain and wish to explore alternatives to medication or surgery. Let's delve into this topic and discover how our body's natural ability to heal, through spinal manipulation, might just be the answer you've been searching for.

Firstly, let's address the prevalence of lower back pain and its connection to poor posture. Studies reveal that approximately 80% of adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives, and poor posture is often a contributing factor. This statistic highlights the widespread nature of the issue and the need for effective, non-invasive solutions.

Now, you may be wondering how bad posture affects your lower back. Poor posture can lead to misalignments in the spine, causing undue stress on the supporting muscles and ligaments. Over time, this stress can result in discomfort, pain, and reduced mobility. The good news is that our bodies possess a remarkable ability to heal, and spinal manipulation, a cornerstone of chiropractic care, can play a pivotal role in restoring proper alignment.

Research suggests that chiropractic adjustments can provide relief for lower back pain by addressing the root cause – spinal misalignments. In a study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, researchers found that chiropractic care was effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with chronic low back pain. This underscores the potential of natural interventions in promoting healing without resorting to medication or surgery.

Now, let's demystify the concept of spinal manipulation. Chiropractors use precise and controlled force to adjust the spine, aiming to correct misalignments and enhance the body's innate ability to heal itself. This drug-free and non-invasive approach sets it apart from conventional treatments, offering a holistic solution for those seeking relief from lower back pain without relying on quick fixes.

It's important to note that achieving lasting results may require consistency and commitment. Regular chiropractic adjustments, coupled with posture-improving exercises, can contribute to the overall well-being of your spine. Think of it as giving your spine the care it deserves – a simple yet powerful way to nurture your body's natural healing processes.

In conclusion, the journey to fixing bad posture and alleviating lower back pain involves tapping into the body's inherent ability to heal. Chiropractic care, with its focus on spinal manipulation and holistic well-being, presents a promising avenue for those looking to avoid medication or surgery. So, the question remains: Can you fix bad posture? With the right approach and a commitment to your spinal health, the answer could be a resounding yes.

Before embarking on any healthcare journey, it's crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional. The information provided here is not intended as medical advice but rather as an exploration of alternative approaches to health and well-being. Your chiropractor or healthcare provider can offer personalised guidance based on your unique needs and circumstances. Remember, your journey to better posture and a healthier spine begins with informed decisions and professional support.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I often find myself explaining the significance of posture to my patients experiencing lower back pain. It's a topic that goes beyond simply sitting up straight; it delves into the very core of our body's ability to heal itself. So, what exactly do we mean by posture, and how can it be a key player in avoiding medication and surgery for lower back pain?Posture, in its simplest form, refers to the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down. But it's not just about appearances; it's about the alignment of our spine and the impact it has on our overall health. Poor posture can result in a variety of issues, with lower back pain being a common complaint.Let's delve into some stats to highlight the prevalence of lower back pain. Did you know that around 80% of adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives? It's a staggering number, and many individuals resort to medication or surgery for a quick fix. However, I advocate for a more natural approach that harnesses the body's innate ability to heal through spinal manipulation. The spine, a crucial part of our musculoskeletal system, plays a vital role in maintaining our body's balance and stability. When our posture is misaligned, it can lead to stress on the spine, causing discomfort and pain. Chiropractic care focuses on restoring proper alignment through gentle adjustments, allowing the body to heal itself over time.A study conducted by the American College of Physicians found that spinal manipulation is an effective treatment for acute lower back pain, providing relief without the need for medication. This approach not only addresses the symptoms but also targets the root cause, promoting long-term healing. In my practice, I often witness the success stories of patients who choose chiropractic care over conventional methods. One patient, suffering from chronic lower back pain, opted for spinal adjustments rather than resorting to surgery. Over time, the pain diminished, and they experienced a significant improvement in their overall well-being.It's essential to understand that the body's healing process takes time. Unlike the quick fixes offered by medication or surgery, chiropractic care requires patience and commitment. Through regular adjustments and lifestyle modifications, individuals can empower their bodies to heal naturally, avoiding the potential side effects of medications or the risks associated with surgery. In conclusion, posture is not just about sitting up straight; it's a holistic approach to our well-being. Embracing the natural ability of our bodies to heal through spinal manipulation is a path worth considering, especially for those seeking relief from lower back pain without relying on medication or surgery. So, the next time you find yourself slouching, remember that your spine holds the key to a pain-free life. Are you ready to take the first step towards a healthier, aligned you?

According to recent studies by the NHS, nearly 80% of adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. But fret not, for your body has an incredible ability to heal itself through natural means.

Harnessing the Power of Spinal Manipulation

Now, let's talk about a remarkable natural remedy - spinal manipulation. This technique involves adjusting the spine to alleviate pressure on the nerves and promote healing. A study published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine found that spinal manipulation significantly reduced lower back pain in participants.

As a chiropractor, I have witnessed the positive impact of spinal manipulation on countless patients. It's like giving your spine a gentle nudge to help it find its way back to harmony.

Simple Techniques for Everyday Relief

Let's dive into practical tips to release that nagging pressure from your lower back. Picture this - like a gentle dance, start with simple stretches. The Child's Pose and Cat-Cow Stretch are excellent options to ease tension. According to the British Journal of Sports Medicine, incorporating regular stretching into your routine can enhance flexibility and reduce lower back pain.

Moreover, don't underestimate the power of a good posture. Slouching puts extra pressure on your lower back, leading to discomfort. A study from the Journal of Physical Therapy Science emphasises the importance of maintaining proper posture to prevent and alleviate lower back pain.

Embracing Movement: The Key to Healing

Movement is medicine, my friends! Engaging in low-impact exercises like walking or swimming can enhance blood circulation and promote healing. The American Journal of Epidemiology reports that individuals who engage in regular physical activity are less likely to experience chronic lower back pain.

As a chiropractor, I encourage my patients to find joy in movement. It's not about pushing yourself to extremes but rather embracing the gentle rhythm of daily activity to unlock your body's natural healing potential.

Patience: A Virtue in the Healing Process

While quick fixes might seem tempting, they often mask the underlying issues. Embracing the natural healing process takes time and patience. Consistency with spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes can gradually lead to long-term relief.

In conclusion, I urge you to consider the power of your body's innate ability to heal. Instead of opting for quick fixes, let's embark on a journey towards sustainable well-being. Remember, the key to unlocking relief lies in understanding, embracing, and nurturing your body's natural capacity to heal.

So, as you step into this new chapter of your journey, ask yourself - are you ready to let your body's wisdom guide you towards a life free from lower back pain?

If you're experiencing discomfort in your lower back and you're keen on steering clear of medications and surgery, you've come to the right place. Let's delve into the various types of back pain and explore the natural wonders of your body's ability to heal through spinal manipulation.Firstly, it's crucial to understand that not all back pain is the same. One of the most common culprits is mechanical back pain, often caused by poor posture, muscle imbalances, or overuse of certain muscles. Statistics tell us that nearly 80% of adults experience mechanical back pain at some point in their lives, and it's a leading cause of missed work days.Another player in the back pain game is herniated discs. These little cushions between our vertebrae can sometimes slip out of place, causing discomfort and, in severe cases, nerve compression. Studies show that approximately 1-3% of all adults experience symptoms related to herniated discs, making it a significant concern for many. Now, let's talk about the natural way our bodies can bounce back from back pain. You might have heard about spinal manipulation, a technique employed by chiropractors like myself. This hands-on approach involves adjusting the spine to alleviate pain, improve function, and stimulate the body's innate healing abilities.Imagine your spine as a well-coordinated team, with each vertebra playing a crucial role. When one of them decides to go rogue, it can throw the entire team off balance. That's where spinal manipulation steps in to restore order. By gently adjusting the misaligned vertebrae, we help your body get back to its harmonious state. One fascinating aspect is that spinal manipulation isn't just about chasing away pain; it's about empowering your body to heal itself. Research indicates that spinal manipulation can reduce pain and improve function for conditions like mechanical back pain and herniated discs. It's like giving your body a nudge in the right direction, encouraging it to tap into its natural healing mechanisms.I understand the allure of quick fixes like pain medications and surgery, but let's consider the long-term benefits of allowing your body to heal naturally. Not only can spinal manipulation provide relief, but it can also address the root cause of your pain, preventing it from becoming a recurring issue. In conclusion, if you're grappling with lower back pain and want to avoid the path of medication and surgery, consider the natural approach of spinal manipulation. Your body has an incredible capacity to heal itself when given the right support. So, why not explore this avenue before resorting to more invasive measures? Now, a gentle reminder – the information provided here is not a substitute for professional advice. If you're dealing with back pain, it's always wise to consult a healthcare professional, like myself or another qualified practitioner. Your journey to a pain-free life begins with understanding your body and making informed decisions. Remember, your health is your greatest asset!

🌟 Unlock Your Body's Potential with Chiropractic Care! 🌟

Ever wondered how chiropractic adjustments can positively impact your body? 🤔 Recent research shows that they play a key role in enhancing neural communication and improving proprioceptive function. 💆‍♂️💡

🚀 Understanding the Impact: Misalignments in the spine, known as vertebral subluxations, can distort signals sent from the spine to the brain. This affects how the brain perceives sensory information, potentially causing pain and dysfunction.

🌈 Chiropractic and Proprioception: Chiropractic care helps combat 'Klutz Syndrome' by improving proprioceptive function – your brain's ability to know where your body parts are, even with closed eyes. Recent studies reveal that chiropractic adjustments significantly enhance limb function and movement control.

The dilemma of whether chiropractors can fix herniated discs is a common concern for individuals in their late 20s to early 30s facing back pain.

1. Understanding Herniated Discs and the Young Adult Perspective:

Lower back pain is no stranger to individuals in their late 20s to early 30s, often attributed to a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture, or injury. Herniated discs, also known as slipped discs, occur when the soft interior of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tough exterior. Contrary to popular belief, this ailment is not exclusive to the elderly. According to a study by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 45% of all herniated disc cases occur in individuals aged 20 to 50.

2. Chiropractic Care: A Non-Invasive Approach to Herniated Discs:

Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. The American Chiropractic Association reports that over 35 million Americans seek chiropractic care annually for various conditions, including back pain. Chiropractors use manual adjustments and other techniques to align the spine, with the goal of reducing pain and improving functionality.

3. Effectiveness of Chiropractic Care: Statistics Speak Louder Than Words:

The effectiveness of chiropractic care in treating herniated discs is supported by compelling statistics. According to a study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 90% of patients with lumbar disc herniation experienced significant improvement after receiving chiropractic spinal manipulation. This evidence suggests that chiropractic care can be a viable alternative to surgery, especially for the younger demographic seeking relief from lower back pain.

4. Preventing Surgery: Chiropractic Care as a First Line of Defense:

One of the most appealing aspects of chiropractic care is its non-invasive nature, making it an attractive option for those wary of surgical interventions. Chiropractors focus on addressing the root cause of the issue, aiming to restore proper spinal alignment and alleviate pressure on the affected disc. By doing so, they not only provide relief but also potentially circumvent the need for surgery. A study in the Spine Journal found that patients who chose chiropractic care as their initial treatment had a lower likelihood of undergoing surgery compared to those who opted for traditional medical care.

5. The Chiropractor's Role in Lower Back Pain Prevention:

Beyond treating existing herniated discs, chiropractors play a crucial role in preventing lower back pain from becoming a chronic issue. Through a combination of spinal adjustments, exercise recommendations, and lifestyle advice, chiropractors empower patients to take an active role in their spinal health. This proactive approach can be particularly beneficial for young adults looking to maintain a healthy spine and prevent future issues.

Conclusion: A Path Towards a Pain-Free Future:

In conclusion, the question of whether chiropractors can fix herniated discs is met with a resounding affirmation. The statistics, coupled with real-life success stories, attest to the effectiveness of chiropractic care as a non-invasive and potentially surgery-preventing solution for lower back pain. For individuals in their late 20s to early 30s grappling with herniated discs, exploring chiropractic care may offer a path towards a pain-free future. Before making any decisions, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice tailored to individual circumstances.

Techniques such as spinal manipulation, flexion-distraction, and activator methods have all demonstrated efficacy, but the true magic lies in finding the approach that resonates with individual needs.

In the exhilarating realm of fitness, where iron clangs and determination resonates, the gym becomes a sanctuary for self-improvement. However, amidst the pursuit of sculpted physiques and increased endurance, many find themselves encountering an unexpected adversary: back pain. Picture this – you're pushing your limits, eager to surpass personal records, but suddenly, a sharp twinge in your lower back brings everything to a halt. What causes this unwelcome interruption in our fitness journey, and how can we steer clear of it?

Understanding the Causes:

Statistics reveal that a staggering 80% of individuals will experience back pain at some point in their lives, and gym enthusiasts are no exception. While the gym is a hotspot for physical transformation, certain practices may inadvertently contribute to back pain. Poor form, overtraining, and neglecting warm-up routines are common culprits. According to reputable sources like the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), these factors can lead to strains, sprains, and even more severe injuries.

Empowering Gym Goers:

Rather than dwelling on what to avoid, let's shift our focus to empowering gym-goers with knowledge that fosters injury prevention. Proper warm-ups, stretching, and maintaining good posture during exercises can significantly reduce the risk of back pain. Certified fitness trainers and chiropractors play a crucial role in guiding individuals toward safer workout practices. Chiropractors, specifically trained in musculoskeletal health, can offer personalized advice and adjustments to enhance biomechanics, ensuring a safer and more effective fitness journey.

Chiropractic Support for Fitness Goals:

Chiropractors are not just healers but proactive partners in your fitness journey. Regular chiropractic care can enhance joint mobility, correct imbalances, and improve overall spinal health. By addressing misalignments and providing tailored exercise recommendations, chiropractors become allies in preventing back pain and optimizing performance. Incorporating chiropractic sessions into your routine can be a game-changer, offering a holistic approach to wellness that complements your fitness goals.

Welcome to Have A Crack, where I explore the evolving landscape of healthcare and delve into alternative approaches to pain management. In today's episode, join us as we unravel the growing trend of chiropractic care and its appeal, featuring real-life stories and evidence-based insights.

In this episode, I delve into the appeal of chiropractic care, exploring why it has become a growing trend in healthcare. With approximately 35 million Americans seeking chiropractic care annually, according to the American Chiropractic Association, and a steady rise reported by the British Chiropractic Association in the United Kingdom, we explore the non-invasive nature of chiropractic care, providing a drug-free and surgery-free option for those grappling with back pain.

A cornerstone of chiropractic care's popularity lies in its evidence-based foundation. Unlike some alternative therapies, chiropractic care is rooted in scientific studies supporting its efficacy in managing musculoskeletal conditions. I unpack a 2018 study published in the Spine Journal, revealing that chiropractic care led to greater improvements in pain and function compared to standard medical care.

Further adding to chiropractic care's credibility, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK recommends manual therapy, including chiropractic care, for non-specific lower back pain. This endorsement from a reputable health organization reinforces chiropractic care as a viable option for relief without resorting to surgery or painkillers.

As concerns about opioid addiction and the side effects of pain medication dominate the current healthcare landscape, we explore how chiropractic care offers a drug-free approach. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported nearly 50,000 opioid-related deaths in 2019, prompting a shift in public perception towards non-pharmacological options. Chiropractic care, with its emphasis on manual adjustments and rehabilitation exercises, emerges as a beacon of hope for those looking to avoid the pitfalls of opioid medications.

Surgery is often viewed as a last resort for chronic back pain, with its invasive procedures and lengthy recovery periods. We examine a 2019 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, demonstrating that chiropractic care can be a safe and effective alternative, reducing the need for surgery in many cases.

However, as chiropractic care gains popularity, we emphasize the importance of informed decision-making. The Advertising Standards Agency in the UK has strict guidelines to prevent misleading claims in health-related advertising. We guide listeners on how to verify a chiropractor's adherence to evidence-based practices and professionalism through registration with the General Chiropractic Council and affiliations with reputable chiropractic associations.

Are we witnessing a move towards more natural and preventive measures in healthcare? As we navigate this landscape, it is vital to stay informed, consult with healthcare professionals, and make decisions aligning with individual needs and preferences.

When it comes to sorting out those nagging musculoskeletal issues, finding the perfect healthcare professional is key. In this video, we're diving into the world of chiropractors and osteopaths – two experts who specialize in fixing up your musculoskeletal system. So, whether it's that chronic back pain, annoying headaches, or pesky joint discomfort, picking the right chiropractor or osteopath can seriously boost your well-being. Stick around as we explore five crucial steps to help you snag the ideal healthcare pro that suits your needs and vibes.Step 1: Know Your NeedsFirst things first, before you start hunting for that perfect chiropractor or osteopath, you gotta know what you need. Different practitioners roll with different specialties – some focus on spinal adjustments, some on soft tissue magic, and others on a holistic health approach. So, if you're wrestling with chronic back pain, you might lean towards a chiropractor who's all about those spine adjustments. But if you're after an all-encompassing wellness experience, an osteopath might be more your speed. Consider your symptoms, your condition, and your treatment preferences before you start your search.Step 2: Check Out the CredentialsNow that you've got your needs down, it's time to dig into the credentials and qualifications of potential chiropractors or osteopaths. Look for folks who've aced accredited educational programs in chiropractic or osteopathy. And, of course, make sure they're licensed to do their thing in your neck of the woods and carry the right certifications. Don't forget to scope out any specialties or extra certifications that align with your specific needs – whether it's sports chiropractic, pediatrics, or nutrition.Step 3: Ask for Recommendations and ReviewsWord of mouth is a powerful tool! Hit up friends, family, or other healthcare pros for recommendations – their firsthand experiences can be golden. But if you're coming up short in the personal referral department, dive into the online world. Platforms like Yelp or Google Reviews are treasure troves of patient experiences. Keep an eye out for patterns in the feedback, but don't forget to take it all with a grain of salt – one negative review in a sea of positives might not be a deal-breaker.Step 4: Set Up a ConsultationBefore you lock in your chiropractor or osteopath, schedule a sit-down to chat about your needs. Pay attention to how they communicate, if they listen, and how they explain their treatment approach. Ask about their experience with cases like yours, the treatment plan, and any potential risks. And don't forget to scope out the clinic – a clean and welcoming vibe can really amp up your experience.Step 5: Crunch the NumbersLast but not least, before you sign on the dotted line, consider the costs. Chiropractic and osteopathic treatments can vary, and some practitioners offer sweet deals for multiple sessions. Hit up their office to get the lowdown on their fees and payment options. If you're rocking health insurance, check if they're in cahoots with your provider. Understanding the financial side of things ensures you make a decision that won't break the bank.In a nutshell, finding the perfect chiropractor or osteopath is all about understanding your needs, checking those credentials, getting recommendations, setting up a meet-and-greet, and making sure the cost fits your budget. Remember, this is a partnership in your health journey, so choose wisely for a top-notch treatment experience. Thanks for tuning in, and stay healthy out there!

Lower back pain is a common issue that can be caused by a variety of factors. Here are three potential causes of lower back pain:

  1. Muscular strain or sprain: One common cause of lower back pain is a strain or sprain in the muscles or ligaments in the lower back. This can occur from lifting a heavy object improperly, sudden movements that put excessive strain on the back, or prolonged poor posture. Symptoms of a muscle strain or sprain can include pain, muscle spasms, and difficulty moving.
  2. Herniated disc: Another cause of lower back pain is a herniated disc, also known as a slipped or ruptured disc. The discs in the spine are responsible for cushioning the vertebrae and allowing for movement. A herniated disc occurs when the inner, softer portion of the disc protrudes through the outer, tougher portion, which can put pressure on the nerves in the spine and cause pain. A herniated disc can also cause numbness, tingling, and weakness in the legs.
  3. Arthritis: Arthritis, a condition that causes inflammation in the joints, can also lead to lower back pain. There are several types of arthritis that can affect the lower back, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Symptoms of arthritis in the lower back can include stiffness, difficulty moving, and swelling.

Other potential causes of lower back pain include spinal stenosis, scoliosis, and osteoporosis. It is important to see a healthcare professional to determine the specific cause of lower back pain and receive an appropriate treatment plan. Treatment options may include medications, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. Taking steps to maintain good posture, lift heavy objects properly, and engage in regular exercise can help prevent lower back pain.

I discovered Jenna online earlier this year, and straight away, Jenna's instagram @that_nurse_who_asks_questions caught my attention immediately. The reason Jenna resonated with me was because in recent times, being a fellow healthcare professional, I've too felt it difficult simply to ask questions, which anyone who knows me, will realise goes completely against the grain for me.

It was only right that I invited Jenna, not only to connect with her, but also to share what Jenna has been up to these past few months in line with this concept.

I was invited this evening to speak to a Gujarati community -  Navnat Vadil Mandal. It was the first time ever they had a speaker of my qualifications, experience and expertise. Over 200+ participants worldwide joined whilst it was streaming live and many more have been able to benefit from the information I shared since.

As a society we must remind ourselves that we are the most advance humans that the planet has ever seen. Therefore, we need to shift our goal from survival-only mode to "Thrival". There is no reason why we cannot optimise our health and wellbeing far being simply looking at symptoms.

As special thank you to Navnat Centre for inviting me to share my expertise with their community.

"Cure" is a word that fascinates me. The reason is because in my experience the people that I have interacted with who have been searching for a cure for their problems often have very different definitions for what the "cure" is.

It's only when you scratch the surface and dig deeper do you really get to the source of the problem, and that is where I believe the true cure lies.

This World Health Day I am taking some time to reflect on what I believe to be the greatest example in our time for why health is so important. I mean, the world has come to a standstill over this past year or so.

As an optimist I always look at what we can learn from the experience of the pandemic. If anything, I would love to see us all prioritise our health.

But what is “health”? The way I see it, health is measured by the ability of your body to heal. After all, the first 4 letters of health spell heal!

What are your thoughts on this?

If you’re like me, you’ve probably felt a sense of guilt when trying to take some time for yourself, to better yourself.

It was only when I was sitting on plane before it took off, and the safety briefing was provided where in case of an emergency that I must be on my oxygen mask first, before attempting to help others.

That’s when I realised that I had to learn to be selfish (in a good way) and put the “oxygen mask” on first before trying to help others.

Once I did that I saw the massive improvement in my impact and ability to serve others on a higher level.

That’s when I promised myself that never again would I let down others by putting myself last.

Ask yourself, what is it you need to do to make yourself the best version of yourself? Allow yourself to do this and allow others to enjoy the best version of yourself.

So can a chiropractor break your neck?

I hope not!

A lot of the time when you see these videos where some chiropractors are adjusting someone's neck it looks very similar to some action movies. Let’s put things into perspective first.

When you are watching an action movie, you are watching actors. Those very same actors are still getting up from the floor at the end of the scene. So the movement that you see the actors create when they make a breaking neck action or move is still not enough to break their neck.

Of course no chiropractor's intention is ever to break the neck. Also I don't know how to break someone’s neck, it’s not what we learn and certainly I do not want to learn. That's not what is important to me.

What is important is for me to learn how to adjust someone's joints so that it's actually correcting the function with optimal movement in those joints. The way that we do that is we spend a lot of time (several years) developing a skill called palpation.

Palpation is the ability to fill in a medical Healthcare context. you can really feel a lot of different subtle movements within the joints, within the body, within the movements of what's going on when this is highly trained and practiced regularly, as I have done.

When you can feel that movement, remember this is on the back of having already gone through a full history and a full examination to determine two things: one what the condition is and two whether this person in front of us is going to be safe to have the treatment.

so we didn't go through the impacts of those options as well done that when he goes through bringing movements for those joints it will be really for that sat on moving where there's not enough range of movement in the joints as well

and we can tell that is just by this feel and I feel is palpation that a highly tuned sense of touch

sense sense of feeling at the moment I'm moving on not moving in this case and finding those joints and putting a movement through.

We spend several hours not just developing that sense of touch, along with studying tons of anatomy and physiology. what that means is as chiropractors we know what the normal ranges of movement are.

Now there are two things. One is the theoretical knowledge you gain from textbooks. secondly the hands-on experience we gain marrying up the theoretical knowledge with the practical information.

This means what we are doing is going up to the Natural ranges of movement and not passing the natural range of movement in that patient.

If you did go past the normal range of movement, that is what I imagine would be how you break someone's neck.

That's why it's so difficult if you have gone through studying all the anatomy and physiology you're taking a full case history of a patient performed a thorough examination and not ever learnt how to break somebody's neck for a well experienced professional highly trained chiropractor to be able to safely perform a neck adjustment.

So you’ve probably seen my videos where I am adjusting my patients and you may wonder “what is actually making that pop sound?”

I'm not actually caring about the sound effects. That's the least of my worries. It really comes down to the cause. What I'm actually doing is more movement, therefore allowing the body to function normally again, at its optimum, rather than being stuck, and over working in certain areas more than others.

So I'll be really looking for those joints that are not functioning optimally, that have a bit more stiffness in them or a reduction in range of movement.

When I find those joints, by putting a specific movement through there, it may create a little popping sound often. The reason is because in those joints, if they haven’t been moving for a while, some gas builds up in the joints. Those tissues are still alive so they release gases in the body anyway. So when I put that movement through the joint, some of the gas can get released and it makes a popping sound.

Often that popping sound has been misunderstood, and instead described as a cracking. I get asked “Can you crack my bones?”

Hopefully not! Because if I do crack your bones, that's technically a fracture.

So by moving those bones we are adjusting the joint thereby improving its range of movement and achieving optimal function.

Now you may often hear some different pops when you're moving around some cracks and clicks. In those cases it may be due to some tight tendons flicking over a bone. That's not quite the same as what we often create in our patients. The noise that you hear is often that the popping sound is created from the joints moving, and the gas releasing from between the joints.

But then also when I put a movement through a joint and I don't hear a pop it doesn't mean it didn’t work.

The sound is not the important part. What is important is the movement that we have now achieved in that joint, i.e. the function.

I also have some people tell me that tell me they crack their joints themselves.

But you to avoid doing that yourself, because even for me, I can't, and it's impossible for me to align or adjust my own joints that need them the most.

It’s impossible for me to actually generate the force required on those stiff joints that needs that movement.

Instead I will often go to see my own colleagues to get adjusted, rather than attempt it myself.

I would encourage you to do the same. If you are trying to adjust yourself, it is not really an adjustment. That movement is likely to go through space or a joint has already got too much movement anyway. So all you are doing in the long term is exacerbating the problem.

Well it all depends on what the cause of the misalignment is. However in most cases probably - yes!

Most people don’t even know that they may have a misaligned jaw. In fact a partner or loved one may hear you grind your teeth at night, whilst you are fast asleep. A common reason for grinding teeth is holding stress in your subconscious.

Chewing is often done one sided, i.e. we prefer chewing in one direction more than the other. However just like you wouldn’t carry a bag on just one shoulder, the same is true with our jaw joints. We want to ensure we get equal movement through both sides.

We have two temporomandibular joints (TMJ) in front of each ear. That’s where you can often feel some ache or pain from teeth grinding or too much clenching of the TMJ. One of the main muscles that creates movement of the TMJ is the temporalis muscle which spans over the side of the head, commonly causes headaches in this area.

As chiropractors and osteopaths we are trained to know about the deeper connection between the muscles round the back of the neck and the jaw area. So a misuse of the TMJ can have a profound knock on effect to the rest of the spine.

One way of treating the TMJ is via the spinal joints and nerves. Another is by holding onto the jaw joint itself and performing a direct manipulation. Remember that although this can help, we must still consider the overall lifestyle that may be the root cause of the problem.

So you have woken up with back pain and you have probably also searched online to see what the best solution is for it. Some of the advice may have recommended for you to be active and keep moving. Following this if you have gone for a walk you quickly realise that

your back pain is still there or even getting worse.

So what should you do? Do you keep walking and have the mindset of “no pain no gain”? Or do you take rest to stop the pain getting further worse?

There are a number of things that can cause low back pain. Until you find the source of the problem it’s difficult to provide specific advice for your current symptoms.

However in most cases if your pain is being aggravated, even by advice you have read from seemingly reputable sources online (or anywhere else) you must stop that activity. That pain is your body’s way of telling you that this is a crisis situation and that it must be addressed and resolved properly.

You must avoid anything that is aggravating your lower back pain, even if it is walking or moving. So get into a position that makes the lower back pain more comfortable. This allows the body to start healing those tissues, rather than further injuring and aggravating that problem.

Today is National Hug Day.

There are so many benefits to our health, lifestyles and well-being.

Of course make sure you get permission from those who want to give a hug.

Hugging reduces cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone, and if found in large quantities for long periods of time in the body, can be quite destructive.

Most people tend to be living stressful lives, so have high amounts of cortisol in their body. A hug from a loved one for a few minutes can help balance the cortisol to normal levels.

Linked to that, studies have found hugging can reduce high blood pressure.

Another benefit is reducing anxiety. I have seen a trend in members of our local community with ever increasing levels of anxiety. A hypothesis for one of the causes is that nowadays there is more of a taboo with physical touch, and we are losing our sense of touch with one another.

See who you can go and give a loving warm hug too, and let me know in the comments.

If you’re finding yourself to be describing your symptoms as “constant low back pain”, that it is always there, then let’s check and see what the cause of it really is.

A lot of the time when we have pain or discomfort we often get confused and our bodies, brains and nervous systems get scrambled, and end up misunderstanding the signals they are receiving. They often get into a much more worried state as this is the worst thing that is happening to the body at this moment, and it can often misinterpret it for being constant, even if it may not be.

So consider what activities or movements affect your constant low back pain, that aggravate it and relieves it. Start making a list of what makes it worse and what makes it feel better. This will be really helpful to present to your health professional when you seek to have your constant low back pain resolved.

If you are suffering with constant low back pain, which is truly constant, meaning it will not even allow you to sleep - this is quite rare, for a pain to be so constant that it does not even allow you to sleep. Often in these cases, people are only able to sleep by taking heavy medication, which of course has other health implications too.

The other problem with constant low back pain affecting sleep is because it affects the quality of sleep, it means that the healing phases of sleep are never achieved. The healing phases of sleep are when the body is able to regenerate itself and recover from any tissue damage.

If you are suffering with constant low back pain my first (ironic) advice is to stop looking online for tips & tricks. If it really is that severe you must seek out professional health immediately. There is no need to waste any time and risk your condition becoming permanent if not handled correctly.

Causes of constant low back pain may include a fracture, a break in the bone. If this is the case, then you definitely what to get it checked without delay, because if it is an unstable fracture you can cause some serious damage and injury to the tissues and blood vessels around that area.

If you have been compressing a spinal disc for a number of years due to extreme lifestyle choices of spending long working hours sitting which can cause the spinal discs to pop, burst or bulge. This can lead to the disc pressing on spinal nerves. Combined with that you may have muscle spasm which is trying to protect the area from further damage. However the muscle spasm itself can often be so severe that it causes pain itself.

Please avoid asking loved ones who are not professionally qualified for what they found helped if they have suffered with constant low back pain. It’s just as easy to seek professional help to get the best treatment for your condition.

So how can you help your low back pain?

There’s a few things you can do. Before we get into what we can do to help your low back pain, we need to think about what your low back pain is.

See if we think about the definition of “low back pain” it’s a pain, a symptom and it is subjective - meaning that everyone experiences low back pain in different ways, and the meaning each person gives their pain is different too.

That makes it much more complex than simply saying “ah, this is the one thing to fix your low back pain.”

First of all we need to find out exactly what the cause of the low back pain is. In order to do that you need to go to an expert because unless you know what to look for, what to examine for, what to test for, it’s very difficult to determine what the cause of the pain is. There’s many different structures within the body that can cause the low back pain.

Low back pain may be caused by your organs, it could be some bones or joints, some ligaments that have been strained, torn muscles, bulging discs, pinched nerves and a whole host of other things in that area.

So the first step to determine which of these things are causing your low back pain you must first get a consultation. A diagnosis based on just an extremely thorough consultation alone is likely to be very accurate. When you then add tests and an examination to a consultation the accuracy of the diagnosis improves significantly more.

Once you know what that diagnosis is, it’s easy. You simply flip it, reverse what has happened, and that makes your treatment plan to resolve the cause of the low back pain.

It’s not just about getting rid of the pain, but to restore normal and optimised function to help prevent conditions coming back in the future.

The way to think about how to achieve relief for lower back pain is to think about a building that is on fire.

See if a building is on fire, the way you know about it is the smoke alarm is going off. The smoke or fire alarm is just like the pain that you experience in your body letting you know there is a serious problem here.

Painkillers act like taking the batteries out of the smoke alarm. You would never take the batteries out of a fire alarm to stop it beeping if the building was on fire.

We know that what you really need to do is find the source of the fire, stop that making things worse, whilst still reducing the flames burning the rest of the building.

So with your health you want to make sure you avoid anything that aggravates your lower back pain, such as any activities, movements or postures.

What we need to consider is why has that problem occurred and why has it occurred NOW? This is an extremely important question I ask myself when working with a patient to help me determine the source of the problem.

If you are unfortunate enough to be suffering with some sort of lower back pain and it just so happens to be at a time with it’s rather difficult to get hold of a health professional, such as on the weekend, during a national holiday, or when abroad in a remote area.

There are a few things you can do in the interim until you are able to get to a health professional. Remember this is not a fix, but just a simple way to potentially help you through the uncomfortable period.

Even if it starts to feel better it’s still worth taking the time to seek professional advice to be fully sure.

  1. Avoid Aggravation

The first thing you must do is avoid anything that aggravates the pain. Although some general advice says to keep active, if that particular activity is aggravating your symptoms then stop - this is NOT a no pain, no gain scenario (quite the opposite)

  1. Calm The Fire

Most of the time a lot of pain is due to inflammation. That means it’s hot and red, so we need to cool it with ice. Of course make sure you wrap the ice in a thin towel otherwise you may end up with frost bite on top of all the other problems you already have going on.

WIth an area that is inflamed, it’s “flame-atory” meaning it’s hot, so applying heat can potentially add more fuel to the fire.

If it was just muscle tightness then it may be suitable to apply heat - however the real question then becomes “Why is that muscle tight?”

So if you’re unsure go for the ice. The other advantage is your nerves don’t work very well at low temperatures anyway, so this can help give some comfort and relief by dulling the pain.

What is the best solution to get rid of your lower back pain?

Well let’s think about this logically. See a lot of people nowadays are talking about back pain as if it were a disease or condition in itself. Often they claim to have a cure for lower back pain.

Back pain, or any pain for that matter, is not a condition, it’s a symptom of the condition. So by removing or reducing the symptom does not mean you have removed the cause.

The way to remove the cause is to create a healthy environment in which health can thrive. Optimal healing allows the body to heal itself.

There are a number of things in the body that could cause lower back pain. The most common is the musculoskeletal system (i.e. the muscles, joints, nerves, ligaments and tendons).

Organs can also cause pain in the area.

One of the first things that a professional chiropractor or osteopath will do is conduct a detailed case history. This helps find out the story of how the patient got to this point. It also gives some detailed information about the nature of the symptoms, which all add up to providing valuable clues into why these symptoms have started.

If suitable, then the patient may require some special clinical tests to determine what specific parts of the body are causing the symptoms (notice how we’re still only talking about symptoms, not the condition yet).

It’s also extremely important to consider WHY those tissues have been affected in that way. It may be that there are some lifestyle choices that patients have made, which has gradually led them to this point.

That is the only way you can naturally create optimal function in the body, allowing it to heal itself and achieving true health. This is my definition of health: “The body’s ability to heal”.

The better the body can heal, the better it can be in it’s optimal function.

If you are suffering with lower back pain when bending there are a number of different structures that we need to be looking at, addressing and potentially be concerned about too.

When we look at a typical spine, it is made up of bones called vertebrae. In the lower back (lumbar spine) there are a total of 5 vertebrae.

The bumps on the back are called spinous processes. These are what you can see or feel when you run you hand down the back. Near these spinous processes are the joints which allow the vertebrae to articulate with each other. These joints are called facets.

In between the vertebrae are the spinal discs. We want these to be nice and spongy to allow for efficient shock absorption from any movements of activity.

When bending the lower back, these discs can get more compressed, which can cause them to bulge if there is already a problem there. This bulge can potentially pinch the nerves as they are exiting the spine.

Pain can also be caused by the stretching of the capsule around the facets if bending forwards. These facet joints can get inflamed, and if they get inflamed to the point where they start pinching on nerves they can also add to pain.

Softer structures in the area such as ligaments and muscles can get stretched when bending. If they are tight due to an injury or poor posture the pain may be an indication of requiring some guided lifestyle changes.

So as you can see there is not an easy fix such as performing a stretch or sitting a certain way to “cure back pain”. As I always say, pain is a symptom indicating that there is a problem. It’s the cause that needs to be addressed to remove it.

So do you have Scoliosis?

Chances are - Yes!

Most people tend to have a scoliosis. So why is no one talking or doing anything about it except me?

A scoliosis is a sideways curvature in the spine. The degree of curvature depends on each individual and how much it is affecting their function. You can find this out by visiting a professional, such as a chiropractor or an osteopath.

Not a single one of the patients that have visited my clinic have ever had a perfectly straight spine - irrespective of their symptoms.

However we have to also consider mechanical challenges too.

If you are going on a ski trip, you need to make sure that you do this exercise to prepare for the break but also for when you are out on the slopes.

When skiing you have to wear these chunky ski boots. The muscles that operate your foot and ankle do not get used very much during skiing due to the stability that is provided by the ski boots. This means that those muscles may waste and weaken, which increases the risk of injury to the area.

To help counter this muscle wasting, stand on one leg, and gradually increase the time you spend standing like this. Swap sides so both legs can get trained up. Ideally you want to start this a few weeks before your ski trip and continue whilst enjoying the vacation.

This will activate or reactivate those muscles to maintain their strength and function.

Have you noticed that your body might click if you move a certain way, ankles might click, or the wrists might click.

See the body does click in different ways for different reasons. The most common reason for clicking if it’s been from your movement is a tendon flicking over a bone. A tendon is a piece of connective tissue that connects a muscle belly to a bone so that it can control movement of the joint.

If the muscle fibres are tight due to poor posture, poor stretching habits or lifestyle choices, the tendons become more taut. This can lead the the tendon flicks over a bit of bone, creating that clicking sensation.

The most common area I have found this to be, is in the shoulder area. There are a lot of muscles around the shoulder girdle which are prone to become tight and causing such tendons to click or flick.

If it happens for a short while, it is not a problem. However if it continues to happen for a few days, weeks, months or even years doing movements where you keep getting this type of clicks can put increased risk of inflammation of the tendon - tendonitis. This can be quite painful, you may need to stop some of the activities that are aggravating that for some time until it has recovered.

It’s often a relatively easy fix, by reducing the tightness in the muscle. Chiropractors and Osteopaths also check the underlying reason for why that muscle is tightening up in the first place. Without doing that, the muscle is likely to keep tightening.

Another reason for your joints to click is if some joints are stiff, other joints may have to overcompensate by moving more than normal. This may lead to some gas in that joint releasing, creating a popping sound.

This is similar to the sound you hear when having a chiropractic or osteopathic adjustment. The difference however is that when your body does it on its own, it’s more likely the joints that are already working too hard are moving. When a chiropractor or osteopath performs this technique, it is specific to the joints that are stiff and so they require the additional movement to restore balanced functional movement back into the body.

So you have decided that you want to get more fit, more healthy, and get more movement in your body, then you may have considered joining a gym or actually working out at home.

I want to share with you some personal tips that I have used, as I was a gym novice at one point (everyone starts as a beginner, right?)

When I was a teenager, I decided that I needed to make a change, create more movement. Especially coming from an Indian culture where someone who is overweight is described as being “healthy”, I was often described as being “very healthy”.

Initially I was quite scared of going to a gym. Not only because it was very expensive for me at the time, or whether I would even use it enough, but I felt unsure and intimidated by my own limiting beliefs about knowing what to do and where to go.

If you are pregnant, know someone who is pregnant, or trying to become pregnant this is for you.

I see a lot of patients who are either pregnant or have happened to become pregnant whilst under our care.

The adult human body changes the most, in the shortest period of time during a pregnancy than at any time. The spine of an expectant mother really goes through a huge transformation. A lot of weight is gained in just 9 months when creating an entire human being!

Aside from weight gain there are a lot of other changes that occur during pregnancy.

One of the biggest changes is the production of a hormone called Relaxin. It’s role is to soften the touch ligaments of the pelvis to prepare for childbirth.

See when we look at the spine and pelvis, it doesn’t take very long to realise that the space in the pelvis for a baby to pass through during natural delivery is far too small. Relaxin will help add laxity to the touch pelvic ligaments, to allow a little extra space from the baby to pass through the birthing canal. Also to help further, during the birthing process the baby’s skull bones will squeeze just enough to be able to pass through - it really is an amazing process!

However Relaxin being a hormone, it is transported in the blood, so this means it’s affects do not end up being specific to just the pelvic area, but affects ALL the soft tissues in the body. All the other ligaments in the rest of the body also then have increased laxity in them. See, ligaments are great at helping you to prevent injury. If they are not able to function correctly, you can be prone to more injury.

In my experience, the expectant mothers I have see at AVID Clinic have had their muscular system take over the role of some of those ligaments. Muscles require a lot more energy to contract, so doing this for a longer period of time than they are meant can increase to the aches, pains and discomfort.

It may also lead to more pinching on nerves, further adding to unnecessary discomfort and less than optimal function, all whilst growing a new human baby.

Without professional spinal care, e.g. by an Osteopath or Chiropractor, to ensure the body is functioning optimally, all these because a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

It also helps to prepare for life after having the baby. Sleep patterns for the parent(s) will be disrupted with feeding and napping patterns. Posture during breastfeeding, hauling the pram in and out of the car, twisting awkwardly to put the baby in the car seat all have further impact mechanical on the body.

Breastfeeding posture can be quite a slouched position, often for long periods of time. Relaxin hormone continues to be produced in the mother until they stop breastfeeding.

The beauty of Chiropractic and Osteopathy is that they are natural and safe. Chiropractors and Osteopaths don’t put anything new in the body or take anything out, meaning we find where parts of the body are not working optimally and get them to function at their peak, helping the baby, the mother and the family.

In short - YES!

However, how do we know exactly what the “trapped nerve” is?

A lot of people may experience pain, numbness, tingling, pins and needles, loss of power - all these types of symptoms if it is a trapped nerve.

But the real question is where is it being trapped?

Until you find the exact point where the nerve is being trapped, there is no proper way of resolving it. These types of conditions are biomechanical meaning it’s a physical problem, so no tablet, no cream, no drug is going to change the biomechanical challenge of pinch.

To resolve it, there needs to be a physical movement to that area to untrap or unpinch the affected nerve.

I prefer calling it pinched rather than trapped.

It’s very much like when you have lights in a building, to turn a light on that’s in the ceiling, you need to go to a switch on the wall. The reason that works is because we all know there is a wire that goes from the switch to the light communicating what to do. If that wire was pinched somewhere when you go to turn the light on by pressing the switch on the wall, it won’t turn on.

Other causes could be the light bulb itself may need replacing, or the fuse in the fusebox may have been tripped, or there may be a power outage at the mains for the whole street.

That’s just like what happens with our body.

When you look at the spine, the nervous system that is housed inside, and those nerves that exit the spine supply everything in the body.

The nerves in the lower back (lumbar spine) supply the legs

Those nerves in the mid back (thoracic spine) supply most of your organs.

And the nerves in the neck (cervical spine) supply the head and arms.

If you experience any pain, numbness, tingling, loss of power, pins and needles, it may not be a local problem, i.e. where you are experiencing those symptoms. There may be a link back to somewhere else in the spine where the nerves are coming from. Or it may be higher up in the central nervous system.

So until you find that mechanical challenge your body is experiencing on those nerves, no drugs, no tablets, no cream is going to relieve that pressure. Not even some exercises, because they may aggravate the issue if you haven’t dealt with the root cause.

Although there isn’t an exercise that I can give you to relieve a trapped nerve, what I can say with confidence is that it well worth visiting a local professional who specialises, like a chiropractor or an osteopath, in finding the source of your problem.

It’s really important to find the source of the trapped nerve, because only then can you release the pinching of the nerve, allowing the nerve flow to correctly supply the body again.

We have to also consider how long you have had the pinched nerve. Because the longer the nerve has been pinched, the more potential weakness you can get, with regards to the signals into those areas.

Yep that’s right… today I’m going to tell you how to stand because you’ve probably been doing it wrong all your life.

The number of people I have seen over the years that I have helped to correct their standing posture is phenomenal.

I need to add some value here for our community.

The problem is most people when standing have their feet parallel. This creates a vulnerability through the lower back and pelvis area creating increased risk with injury.

  1. Staggered Stance

Put one foot in front of the other, then bring one of them across so that both feet are approximately hip distance apart.

  1. Slightly Bend Your Knees

Avoid locking out your knees so that you have enough flexibility through them, which reduces any impact through the lower back. You almost end up in a very slightly relaxed seated position.

  1. Shift Body Weight

After doing the first two steps, you can now shift your weight from your front to your back leg (and vice versa) spreading the tension in your body.

As children we are told not to fidget. However fidgeting is one of the best things you can do for your health because we need to move. We are not designed to sit still and be quiet, but to move, be active and do things.

By positioning your body this way and shifting your weight it gives parts of your body a bit of a break.

If you work in an environment where you have a counter or a standing desk, this is a great position as you can move, twist and carry out your tasks very comfortably rather than being very rigid and needing to bend forwards, creating more tension through the whole body.

This also works very well when you are commuting on a bus or train (if you get the space). Any sudden jerks in movement by the bus or train get absorbed by your legs and reduce your risk of injuring your back considerably.

It’s worth retraining your body and reminding yourself in this way to be able to carry out all the things you want to achieve.

Ever wonder how you can tell how healthy you are? Of course we all want to be healthier versions of ourselves. Some of us may compare what our health is like with our loved ones to see who is healthier than who. But how can you really be sure?

It’s so much more complex than simply checking to see how far you can bend to reach your toes, being able to move without any discomfort or run a 100m sprint in a certain time.

Are these even the correct factors to be looking for when measuring health?

I have always strived to be as objective with my measurements as much as possible with my patients. Over the years I have consistently asked myself how I can measure how healthy my patients are. What I have found is it all comes down to adaptability - homeostasis.

I came to this conclusion by taking this idea to the extreme (it’s a strategy I commonly adopt to figure out most things). So I thought to myself “who is considered to be super healthy?” The best examples I came across were superheroes.

So let’s use Superman in this example. Superman could be in a really cold, freezing environment and he wouldn’t need to worry about whether he would freeze to death as his body is able to warm itself up enough avoiding any denaturing of his enzymes to allow the biochemical reactions to continue to take place.

At the same time Superman could also go into an extremely hot environment and be able to cool his body down, for the same reasons.

If you can adapt to your environment, whether you are in a hot or cold environment, the more adaptability you have, the more flexibility you have within your own system, which means you will be more healthy as you able to be in different environments safely.

This is the test I used to find the healthiest bed, the healthiest pillow, the healthiest chair, the healthiest diet, the healthiest anything.

It always comes down to this one thing… how much can you adapt?

Another example is if you haven’t drunk any water for some time, those who can go without water for longer as more healthy than those who cannot. Of course I am not talking about thriving here, this is pure survival in this water example as we take this concept to the extreme in order to understand what health is.

My advice is to ensure you are drinking enough water of course, as I want you to be living optimally.

I also would never compare my health to someone else’s, but I would compare my health in comparison to me. Going back to the example of being in a hot climate, if I don’t do well in those environments, I can take some time to gradually train myself to get used to the heat. Eventually I will be fine, as long as I have the ability to adapt, i.e. if I am healthy enough to. This means my body will need to learn to sweat more efficiently in order to cool it down and keep my core at the temperature for my enzymes to work at their optimum.

As an entrepreneur I may have to increase the hours I sit in meeting from 3 hours to 7 hours. By taking the measures that allow me to learn to be able to sit for longer, without causing any problems (not just pain), be able to adapt to my environment better, that will be a good indication of how healthy I am.

So check what you are doing, and see where you can make changes to make yourself a healthier version of you.

Hooray we made it! It’s the end of the year (or decade) and it’s finally time to celebrate with all the wonderful things you want to do to mark the end of this year.

We may be out celebrating with our loved ones having a great time.

However I am also aware that there are some of those who may not be in the same celebrating state of mind.

They may be lonely, either by choice or by circumstance.

So this New Year’s Eve, way before the countdown begins, lets all get our phones out and message at least 5 people that you haven’t spoken with for a while saying:

“hey, I’m just checking in to see how you’re doing”

You don’t need to message about New Years just yet as that will most likely get lost in all the other New Years messages they’re probably receiving.

But this special message checking in with them is likely to stand out and make them feel appreciated that you care.

What if that was the one person who needed that one message from you to let them know someone cares, well I think that would just make their day, year, decade!

Or another way you can do this is pop round to some of your neighbours that you may know are going to be spending today alone, check in on them, and perhaps even arrange a date in the first 5-10 days of 2020 where you will catch up.

This is how I’m starting my New Year and I hope you do too because I think there are people out there who need our help, so let’s go help them.

There’s more to life than just pain relief. Although pain can be very uncomfortable and debilitating, pain is not the problem.

When I see our patients coming in for our services (Chiropractic & Osteopathy) we educate them on how pain is part of the problem e.g. like the fire alarm going off in your home or the light on the dashboard in your car getting you to pay attention to a problem. What painkillers do is act as if they were to snip that wire to the fire alarm or light on the dashboard. So the problem would still be there, but you wouldn’t be aware of it.

You know the more sensible thing to do would be to sort out the underlying problem.

For me, my belief and philosophy is that using Chiropractic or Osteopathy only for pain relief is unethical. See, I grew up in our first family business – a pharmacy. So I saw how a lot of society formed around dealing with medical or health problems with a reductionist view. That meaning focussing on the symptomatic area, rather than a holistic look to find the source of the problem.

A holistic view takes into account the whole.

Pain relief is only to make you comfortable, which is the first step. With true health you want to deal with the source of the problem, resolve it and optimise the body to work better.

Compare a 30 pence packet of paracetamol for pain relief compared to a private treatment that deals with making your body function better.

The paracetamol is not the healthy option. Dealing with the source of the problem is. Otherwise it’s like using our example above, where you constantly are having to put the fire out, but never resolving the underlying condition.

When I went through my training to learn how to be an osteopath and a chiropractor what I was frequently told is that we prevent conditions recurring. After all we know prevention is better than the cure.

However in practice at the time I found very few people practicing this.

So what I did was reformed my practice, and ever since then I regularly test my patients’ PROPRIOCEPTION.

Proprioception is a professional way of saying how your brain and nervous system knows where your body is in space.

Try this… close your eyes and straighten your arm out in front of you. Now bend your elbow to say 90 degrees. Before you open your eyes, how do you know your elbow is bent? Because the nerves relay messages from your joints to your brain telling you where your body is in space.

Training your proprioception to a high level is a key player in preventing injury. If you had poor proprioception and straightened your elbow, well if by accident you went too far, you would already have damaged tissues and cause an injury before you knew you had gone too far.

Whereas if you train your proprioception high then you would know by the optimum feedback from your body to your nerves and brain that you have moved incorrectly and can prevent tissue damage and injury.

The way I test for proprioception in my patients is by asking them to walk in a straight line with their eyes closed (this removes visual clues). The better you can do this, the better you know where your body is in space and therefore can prevent injury much better.

So whichever health professional you see, make sure at some point in their plan they are going to aid you in training up your proprioception to help prevent injury rather than just constantly dealing with the symptoms only.

If you get into trouble and have treatment which feels good, but then don’t look to prevent it from coming back so end up going back to your bad habits, only for the condition to return.

The reason for that is biology, bad habits and common sense.

Once my patients have gone through their main course of care I often advise on how to maintain or further improve their condition beyond just pain relief or avoiding symptoms.

It’s much like when a building is on fire. Putting the fire out is like dealing with the symptoms only. However, to ensure that the fire doesn’t come you need to correct the original problem and check regularly to make sure it doesn’t come back. That’s much like what our body is like.

It’s also going to give you a better chance of correcting a problem before it becomes too big, therefore improving the outcome even more.

There are several studies showing this to be the case with musculoskeletal conditions. Which makes sense. If you stop taking care of your body, get out of good habits of doing certain exercises or movements, having regular checkups to catch conditions and prevent injury then there’s a higher risk of poor health and less than optimal function.

For those that get into these bad habits tend to call us back in around 5 months time as it takes around this much time for them to start noticing a few symptoms creep back into and affect their lifestyle.

Let’s take the example of a professional athlete who is on a maintenance program, but is preparing for an event. I may find by them coming to see me more frequently in the build up to that event to be beneficial and ensure they are at their optimum.

The same applies for those who have hobbies and want to continue to enjoy those hobbies.

I also see a lot of ambitious patients who want career progression or entrepreneurs who need to function at their peak in order to serve the needs of their business. Our body is still the instrument that we require in order to perform those activities. So these examples may require for someone to be sitting in an office for several hours, or sitting twisted in a boardroom meeting. If they are not able to sit in that way their work is likely to be affected and therefore they are not going to be able to get what they need done.

With chiropractic and osteopathy it’s just like when you regularly see your dentist, have your car serviced, get your heating boiler checked annually.

You have probably come across this famous “condition” SCIATICA.

It can be a very debilitating condition.

If you a professional ever diagnoses you with sciatica I would implore to ask them what is the cause.

You see, the definition of sciatica is:

Pain in the distribution of the sciatic nerve

This means that sciatica only tells you where the pain is, not the cause. For me that is not a complete diagnosis as you don’t yet know what the problem is.

Your sciatic nerve is the thickest nerve in your body (it’s as thick as your thumb!). It’s made up of a number of different branches of nerves that originate in your lumbar spine (low back). These converge, just how the exit on a motorway would converge into a spaghetti junction, out of which you have individual peripheral nerves, one of which is the sciatic nerve.

There are other peripheral nerves that also supply the the leg.

Just as you may meet traffic whilst driving, you experience the “pain” of the vehicle in front of you. However, that line of traffic could be due to a number of different reasons, such as roadworks, an accident or dysfunctional traffic lights.

Similarly sciatica can be due to a pinching of the nerve roots from the spine, from tight muscles in the buttock area, a disc bulge, etc… So it’s important to resolve the source of the problem to allow correct nerve flow, rather than making a vague and incomplete diagnosis of sciatica.

I see a number of people in my clinic with some type of injury or pain initially. It often will affect how they can function correctly. They often describe their condition as “chronic”. However they are not always right.

See the word chronic is related to the word chronology, meaning when something has happened in time. It has nothing to do with the severity of the symptoms problem. So if someone say “it feels really chronic today” actually doesn’t make sense because if it is chronic, it wouldn’t be chronic today, it would be chronic anyway.

An acute injury is one that has happened straight away. It would be flared up with inflammation, tension, spasming, really angry, raw and fiery. Pain scales tend to be very hight 8,9 or 10 out of 10 - well actually they would describe their pain as 20+ out of 10.

With chronic conditions most will describe their pain as around 2-4 out of 10.

When you experience an acute injury and don’t get it seen professionally, there’s a good chance it may “feel better” on its own. That’s the thing. Our body is very good at dulling the symptoms so that you can “live with it” and that’s a sign of an acute condition becoming chronic. That really concerns me when I hear “I can live with it” as it will only flare up again in the future at some point.

So you end up in a cycle of a chronic condition with acute flare ups until you seek professional help that can break that cycle and resolve the underlying condition.

You know this as you may have heard someone claim they have been fine for a long time, only to then injure themselves in the most debilitating way by simply reaching to get something. Not everyone who reaches for something has the exact same injury. So that implies that there was already something underlying in the individual who hurt themselves, i.e. a chronic pattern/behaviour which resulted in an acute flare up by reaching out.

It doesn’t matter how old, what gender, what occupation, lifestyle choices that have this pattern. It can affect anyone at any time if they are not having a professional take care of them.

If you had an injury out in the wild your body would dull the pain so that you are able to continue getting to safety from any predators. If you were worried about the pain you would not be able to get to safety and die. That is why most acute conditions end up in a chronic pattern, even now in a modern world.

You see every one of us are so unique, that no two people are alike. So the way I get great results is unravel any compensation patterns, whether symptomatic or not, to ultimately get to an optimally functioning body.

If you are someone who spends time at any type of desk, whether it be working from home on a dining table, or in a proper office set up at home, or if you’re in a professional set up in a commercial building and you work in an office building where you are sitting down to do your work, then this post is for you.

See, what happens is a lot people think that because they are sitting down that they are at less risk of any injury. But what I have found is that a lot of people don’t sit correctly at their desks. Sitting for 8-10 hours at a time or collectively throughout the whole day is a lot of time to not be doing something correctly, amounting to a lot of degeneration.

  1. Screen height

Some common problems I see at AVID Clinic are for example not having the screen height correct.

What we want to do is have half of the screen at eye level. This means that you are not looking down or up too much, reducing neck strain.

By looking down too much for a sustained period of time compresses the discs in your neck, which can increase its chances of bulging and pressing on nerves.

  1. Arm rests

Everyone humerus is different lengths. Ensure your shoulders are relaxed so that your elbow is a natural position and that’s the height of your arm rest. The arm rest should just be able to tuck underneath your desk or table to allow your wrist a comfortable natural position when typing or writing.

  1. Touch typing

Recently someone saw me typing thought I had had lessons. Actually I taught myself to touch type by spending hours on MSN Messenger with my friends (most of you probably won’t even know what that is!). Learning to touch type helps prevent neck strain in a similar way to getting your screen height correct as you don’t have to keep looking down all time, and causing further pressure and stress on the discs.

From a customer service perspective if you are working in a role say front of house, then you really want to be able to maintain as much eye contact with the customer, rather than keep looking down at the keyboard.

  1. Air Cushions

These are my must have when sitting at a desk. If you have any pain or discomfort it may not be a good idea to use straight away. But when you are well then it’s normally find to use. Air cushions mimic gym/swiss/pregnancy balls that you may have seen in some funky offices. The advantage that an air cushion has it that you can put these on any seat, and still be able to rest your arms on an armrest (which we now know is important). With the balls you don’t get to use armrest which can increase shoulder tension & problems.

This also enables you to train your proprioception (fancy word for your brain knowing where your body is in space). When your proprioception is working really well it drastically reduces your risk of causing injuries.

It may seem strange to be posting content around how to breathe correctly and more effectively. Most people, although have been breathing all their lives, and not even give it much conscious thought as it takes care of itself. It sort of happens in the background rather than for us to consciously worry about breathing correctly.

But that’s the problem. Most of the people I see in at AVID Clinic are not breathing correctly. They have actually forgotten how to breathe correctly, and there are number of reasons why that is.

With quiet breathing we only should be using one muscle – the abdominal diaphragm. This muscle runs through about half way in your torso, separating your chest cavity from the abdominal cavity.

When contracting your diaphragm, this muscle flattens and pushes your abdominal organs out, making your tummy stick out a bit. This creates negative pressure in the chest cavity, drawing are in from your environment into your lungs. That’s how we breathe in.

Most do not like the idea of appearing to have a large tummy, so tend to hold their tummy in. This means that they avoid contracting the diaphragm, so it stays relaxed as a dome.

To breathe, they elevate the upper ribs to create the negative pressure to breathe into the lungs. That’s normally ok if it’s been done for a short while. In fact that’s how we are meant to breathe when we exercise and are not “quiet breathing”. But breathing this way for too long can cause other problems.

The muscles required to elevate the upper ribs have another primary function – movement. Their secondary function is to assist in breathing. Breathing incorrectly means that these muscles are already pre fatigued, so when you go to move your neck or your arms, they are having to work extra hard, thereby increasing your risk of injury. The common complaint for patients that I see with neck and shoulder aches are “all I did was reach for… and ping the pain started”. This is the primary reason why this happens.

So working with me these patients retrain and learn to use the correct muscles to breathe properly.

Breathing this way also helps keen our organs healthy. See, the organs are not statis, like in diagrams or in models. They are very motile. For example when you eat food, your stomach enlarges to accommodate and pushes some of the other organs to make space. By breathing using your diaphragm, it enables those organs to be massaged and create flexibility to move better.

A lot of people who are constipated tend not to be breathing correctly. By breathing this way, their intestines get massaged, improved the movement and reducing their constipation.

Breathing correctly also can help relieve stress, and certainly can help you manage stressful situations in a better way.

The ratio to breathe is 1:4:2

Breathe in for 1, hold for 4, breathe out for 2.

In this example I can hold my breath for 20 seconds. So my rations are 5:20:10

Repeat this 10 times.

This enables your sympathetic nervous system, which works very hard during times of stress, goes does. And your parasympathetic nervous system elevates creating feelings of calm and relaxation.

You see, this is important if you are considering improving overall productivity. In a stressed state your IQ tends to reduce a little because you enter a fight or flight survival mode. All your blood gets shunted to your skeletal muscles to prepare you to fight the danger or “flight” run away from the danger. Doing this over a long period of time means there’s less blood to your brain, reducing your brain’s efficiency and function thereby reducing your IQ output.

Breathing this way helps you stay smart!

If you’ve been thinking about losing some weight or fat and found it difficult. Perhaps you’ve tried diets, various exercise programs, which work for a little while, then you end up finding yourself reverting to your old ways, or excuses pop up and you end back at square one.

I’m going to share a strategy that I devised that I found to work really well for me.

It all comes down to maths (for you guys at the back feeling anxious about numbers, don’t worry, I’ve got you).

For the purpose of taking action I’m not going to get bogged down on the accuracy of the various ways in which you can obtain these numbers. All I care about is the numbers are trending in the correct direction for you to achieve your goals.

We’re really talking about fat loss, not weight loss. To lose weight quickly, cut off a limb, and you’ve instant weight loss!

Let’s take the example of someone weighing 100kg with a body fat percentage of 25%. If their goal is to be at 20% body fat, that means we need to lose 5% body fat. That’s the same in this instance at 5kg of fat in this person who weighs 100kg.

We know 5kg = 5,000g

We know 1g of fat = 9 calories (kcal for you science folk)

Therefore we need to burn a total of 45,000 calories to achieve that goal of 20% fat

We know that we can’t burn 45,000 calories in one go, so this gives a good idea of being realistic for the timescales it can take to achieve this goal.

In my personal experience a daily deficit of 500 calories is a realistic target, which means that it would take 90 days to hit our target!

Here’s how we calculate your daily deficit.

Food & fuel going in will be about 2,000 calories (2,500 in others).

Energy burn is a total of passive (BMR - Basal Metabolic Rate) & active.

In this example the BMR may be 1,500 calories.

Active exercise then needs to be 1,000 calories in physical movements and exercise.

If 1,000 calories to exercise is too high for you, then by reducing it, all that simply means is it will take longer to achieve your goal. The importance of this however is it provides you with a realistic idea of when you can achieve your goal by, and therefore you are less likely to give up on achieving it.

Even as a young boy I found it difficult to lose fat, so this is a method that I devised that has helped me far more than any other strategy, and I revisit frequently.

If you have any questions about this, please reach out to me on any of my socials and I would love to help you achieve your goals for the new year!

Did you know there’s a relationship between blood pressure and your posture? See, the pressure in your body, in your blood vessels can actually change depending on what you are doing, in terms of activity and physical demand. But it can also be affected by your physical posture – how you are holding yourself.

You know when people talk about getting “wear & tear”, well what they are describing when referring to the spine is Spondylosis.

This is not something to necessarily be afraid of.

Our spine goes through various stages of degeneration (see the video for how this occurs).

Although this happens anyway, the choice we have is how well we look after our body.

Have you ever had the urge to crack your own joints? Have you been obsessed with watching all these chiropractic videos online which shows people having their joints adjustments and spine cracked?

I’m going to tell you whether it’s safe and if you should even have it done.

As a professional chiropractor and osteopath I don’t actually “crack” anything. That’s because “cracking” implied a break or fracture. So let’s redefine what we are saying. The space between the bones are the “joints”. It’s the joints that get mobilised.

When I palpate (fancy word for clinically examine using sense of touch) someone’s spine I can tell how well those joints are moving, or not.

Like any skill, palpation takes years of training and practice to hone in that skill. In fact you can see this in a lot of my videos, right before I adjust someone’s spine I will palpate their joints to find which levels I will be adjusting at that particular session.

Although I can treat others and adjust their joints, I find it really frustrating that I cannot adjust myself.

That’s purely because it’s not possible for me to be able to generate the force on the joints that require it if I try it on myself.

If you have clicked your own joints, the chances are you most likely have cavitated the joints that were already moving, or probably moving too much.

“Doesn’t cracking your knuckles cause arthritis?” Actually that’s a myth and simply not true. I think it originated from a couple of places. Either to scare children from doing it. Or because when a joint cavitates, it creates more movement, and if your fingers happen to get caught and injured, that injury is a predisposition to earlier onset osteoarthritis.

If you’ve ever suffered in pain, you will know how difficult it can be to get to sleep.

When you are in pain and can’t sleep well, the problem is you don’t fall into the healing phases of sleep.

Now sleep is important as we do it for a considerable amount of our lives. The healing phases of sleep are what allow your body to regenerate and recuperate so that you can build back a stronger body, then enabling you to carry out the tasks you enjoy doing in life.

Have you, or do you know someone who has been suffering with low back pain for a short while or a really, really long time, perhaps for many years?

Then we need to find the root cause of the problem. You would never expect a surgeon to ask you to jump up onto the surgery table to perform surgery at your first consultation without first having taken the time to go through a full case history, a thorough examination and determine the best course of care for you.

The same is true for your chiropractor or osteopath. Before I treat any patient, the reason I have been able to achieve great results is by carefully analysing that patient's condition, and prescribe the best solution for their problem based on published research and my years of experience.

If you have any questions feel free to reach out to me on any of my socials @trishulvadi and I will always take the time to help you out.
