Create and get +5 IQ Artist: Smashing Pumpkins Song: Rocket (Acoustic)
Note: Based on 2007 tour acoustic version, not the SD tour acoustic version allthough they are very close. These are just the basic chords for the song. Billy changes everything up by alternating the chords a bit here and there. So if you want to play an Dsus2 where it says D it will work aswell. Same goes with a Asus2 or Am7 where it says A. I've just put the basic chords down so it'll be a little bit easier for you to experiment with. Also if you find it a bit boring to just play a G chord thru-out the verse you can for example throw in a G with a F as the root (See Billys version from Oeiras Festival, Portugal, 2007) or add a Cadd9 chord at the end of every phrase, kind of like they did with the acoustic versions in 1993.

I'm never alone, I'm alone all the time
Are you at one, or do you lie
We live in a wheel, where everyone steals
But when we rise, it's like strawberry fields
If I treated you bad, you'd bruise my face
Couldn't love you more, you've got a beautiful taste
Don't let the days go by
Could have been easier on you
I couldn't change though I wanted to
Should have been easier by three
Our old friend fear and you and me
Glycerine, glycerine
Don't let the days go by, glycerine
Don't let the days go by
Ah, ah-ah-ah, ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
Glycerine, glycerine
Oh, glycerine, glycerine
Bad moon whine again
Bad moon whine again
As she falls around me
I needed you more, we wanted us less
Could not kiss, just regress
It might just be clear, simple, and plain
Well that's just fine, that's just one of my names
Don't let the days go by
Could've been easier on you you you

Señor, señor Can you tell me where we're headin'? Lincoln County Road or Armageddon? Seems like I been down this way before Is there any truth in that, señor? Señor, señor Do you know where she is hidin'? How long are we gonna be ridin'? How long must I keep my eyes glued to the door? Will there be any comfort there, señor? There's a wicked wind still blowin' on that upper deck There's an iron cross still hanging down from around her neck There's a marchin' band still playin' in that vacant lot Where she held me in her arms one time and said, "Forget me not" Señor, señor I can see that painted wagon Smell the tail of the dragon Can't stand the suspense anymore Can you tell me who to contact here, señor? Well, the last thing I remember before I stripped and kneeled Was that trainload of fools bogged down in a magnetic field A gypsy with a broken flag and a flashing ring He said, "Son, this ain't a dream no more, it's the real thing" Señor, señor You know their hearts is as hard as leather Well, give me a minute, let me get it together Just gotta pick myself up off the floor I'm ready when you are, señor Señor, señor Let's overturn these tables Disconnect these cables This place don't make sense to me no more Can you tell me what we're waiting for, señor?

LAZHER, SI PUEDO Close the door, put out the light
No, they won't be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don't you know?
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through, oh
They choose the path where no-one goes
They hold no quarter
They hold no quarter, oh
Walking side-by-side with death
The devil mocks their every step, ooh
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howling more
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you, oh, oh, oh
They choose the path where no one goes
They hold no quarter
They ask no quarter
They hold no quarter
They ask no quarter
Yeah
Without quarter, quarter, yeah (without quarter)
Without quarter, quarter, quarter
Taking no quarterClose the door, put out the light
No, they won't be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don't you know?
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through, oh
They choose the path where no-one goes
They hold no quarter
They hold no quarter, oh
Walking side-by-side with death
The devil mocks their every step, ooh
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howling more
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you, oh, oh, oh
They choose the path where no one goes
They hold no quarter
They ask no quarter
They hold no quarter
They ask no quarter
YeahIF YOU LOVE IT YOU WILL LEARN IT, AND PEACE AMIGOS

What do the Russian scientists say in this scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey? Asked 5 years, 10 months ago Active 29 days ago Viewed 14k times

1 29 minutes into the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, there is a scene where some Russian scientists are speaking to each other in Russian. The subtitles on the DVD don't show what they're saying.
They speak in Russian for a few seconds at the start of the scene, and then for a few more seconds after Heywood leaves, right at the end of the clip above. What are they saying?

Their Russian sounds rusty, but it is more or less possible to understand what they say.
Before they meet Floyd:
Dr. Stretyneva: Ну куда он сейчас уедем? (Grammar mistake: mixing 3rd person singular pronoun with a 1st person plural verb)
(The last two words are barely comprehensible)
Approximate translation:
Stretyneva: But where (when?) can we (he?) possibly go now?
Smyslov: Er, at approximately 2 o'clock.
Kalinin: Perhaps, we should go to the observatory?
Elena: As soon as he arrives.
After Floyd leaves:
Stretyneva:
Kalinin:
Approximate translation:
Smyslov: They must be having a very hard time.
Stretyneva: Apparently.
Kalinin: Yes, they must.
A note about the scientists' last names. Various online and offline sources spell their names as Kalinan and Stretyneva, which does not make much sense, as these last names are pretty much unheard of (try googling the Cyrillic forms Калинан and Стретынева).
When Margaret Tyzack introduces them, I can hear pretty clearly Калинин (Kalinin) and Сретнева (Sretneva), which are both fairly common Russian last names.
One weird thing here is that Tyzack uses the masculine form Kalinin, rather than the appropriate feminine form Kalinina (Калинина).

Georgy Ivanov 55644 silver badges55 bronze badges 1 They are using the present tense, so it sounds more like an ongoing problem. – Georgy Ivanov Apr 17, 2016 at 8:30 5 Maybe they assumed fomr the perspective of 1968 that in 2001 the Russian language would change to the effect of (a) female names not necessarily always differing from male names, (b) by the progress of General Relativity Theory, the difference between "where" and "when" are beginning to disappear (c) congruence between subject and verb is no longer fully mandatory. - Or they just had lousy sources for their Russian and thought nobody would notice (hey, this keeps happening with foreign language sequences in Hollywood films) – Hagen von Eitzen Apr 17, 2016 at 14:44 12 There is a practical non-transgender explanation of the masculine form. By practical I mean that I've seen that in real life. When you as a woman get married to a Russian man and you get his surname you might end up with masculine surname if the marriage was registered in a non Russian-speaking country. Officials refuse to write the feminine form of the surname into your marriage certificate, because they perceive it as a different surname. – Andrew Savinykh Apr 17, 2016 at 21:22 3 @Andrew Savinykh: or she might be born in a non-slavic country to a Russian father. – followed Monica to Codidact Apr 18, 2016 at 5:10 2 To me the first utterance sounds more like "Которым часы идёт?" If we assume the actress is trying to say "Который час идёт." and that the "в" in Dr. Smyslov's answer was erroneously inserted, perhaps by a coach who did not understand the context, the conversation suddenly makes sense. We get something like this: Dr. Stretyneva: How long has it been now? Over an hour. Dr. Smyslov: About two hours. Kalinin: Perhaps we could go to the observatory? Elena: As soon as he gets here. – David42 Apr 18, 2016 at 23:32 Show 5 more comments

I can't find a conclusive answer, but here's what I did find: The script is no help - it doesn't even mention the conversation between the Russians before Floyd approaches them, and all it says about their conversation after he leaves is:
THE RUSSIANS EXCHANGE A FEW SERIOUS PARAGRAPHS IN RUSSIAN
From the comments on the YouTube video itself:
LEFTCOASTER67: Does anyone know how good the actors [sic] Russian is?
ECONOMIC: To a Russian speaker, it is obvious that he (Rossiter) is not Russian or even eastern European. Having said that, he does pronounce the phrases with correct emphasis, albeit with an overtly English tongue ;)
INGUSMANT: What does he say at the end btw?
ECONOMIC: Not too sure I am interpreting it correctly but it sounds like "Navernoe im ochen trudna" which roughly translates as 'It looks like it's difficult for them' or 'It looks like they're struggling'. The woman then replies and that roughly translates as 'it seems like it'.
And:
DEEPTIME5: What are they saying in Russian at the end of the clip..? I've always wondered.
SUISEISEKI DESU: "I guess it must be difficult for them." "Apparently."
From a scholarly analysis of film effects:
After Dr. Floyd leaves, Dr. Smyslov speaks ill of him. “Наверное, ему очень трудно./Definetly, he has the greatest difficulty.” Dr. Stretyneva responds, “По видимости./Obviously.” Dr. Kalinan does, too, “Да, очень трудно./Yes, the greatest difficulty”.
From IMDb:
Before they meet Floyd, they are considering going to the observation deck while they wait for a flight. After Floyd leaves, they say, "It must be difficult for him."
From the FAQ on a Kubrick fan site:
What does the Russian scientist Smyslov say on the space station in 2001?
[A site member named] Dupavoy answered this one, he translates it as: "These are hard times."
Although, according to Nina Stoessinger, in the German dubbed version Smyslov says: "He knows more"
From a sci-fi fan site:
"Im navernoe ochen' trudno" ("They must have had a very hard time").
"Da, ochen' trudno" ("Yes, they must").
Which suggests the subject of the Russians' concern had less to do with Floyd than with the crew of the Russian rocket bus.
This last translation seems to be based on an earlier post on an extensive 2001: A Space Odyssey fan site:
The female scientist remarks: "Im navernoe ochen' trudno" ("They must have had a very hard time").
Margaret Tyzack replies: "Da, ochen' trudno" ("Yes, they must").
It suggests that the subject of their concern was nothing to do with Floyd, but was the crew of the Russian craft that was denied permission for an emergency landing.
My take on the above: A YouTube user who speaks Russian well enough to critique Rossiter's enunciation has interpreted it on his or her own, and says it is something like:
'It looks like it's difficult for them' or 'It looks like they're struggling'... 'It seems like it'.
Another YouTube user has a different translation with the same basic meaning:
"I guess it must be difficult for them." "Apparently."
While several other sources (which may be dependent upon one another) say the lines are:
"They must have had a very hard time".
"Yes, they must".
Thus, we have at least three (seemingly) independent translations that say roughly the same thing. Chances are, they are correct. This conclusion is supported by the fact that at least one other source translates the first line as "These are hard times", which is quite similar to "They must have had a hard time". Most of the translations agree that the first line has something to do with hard times. Share Improve this answer Follow edited Jun 16, 2020 at 9:31

Wad Cheber 65.8k6060 gold badges488488 silver badges653653 bronze badges 2 +1 nice work. I'll let the question sit for a while to see if anyone wants to translate it themselves, or finds a translation for the first part. Your conclusion is probably right though. – Molag Bal Apr 17, 2016 at 4:02 5 "[Russian intensifies]" – Lightness Races in Orbit Apr 17, 2016 at 10:02 3 Yes, the second Russian dialog is to the effect that some unspecified present circumstance is difficult for someone. There is disagreement about whether Smyslov said "ему" ("for him") or им ("for them"). They most definitely do not say "These are hard times." or "I think he knows more." Nor can they possibly be referring to something that is over and done with such as the difficulties experienced by the crew of the space bus which was refused an emergency landing. – David42 Apr 19, 2016 at 0:17 Add a comment

I agree that it's bad Russian. My speciality is divining intended texts and emendating them so that they sound idiomatic. I believe this is what the Russians were supposed to be commenting, given Floyd's evasive answers:
Smyslov: There must be a very serious problem.
Stretyneva: Apparently.
Kalinin: Indeed, very serious.

Ksenia Maryniak 1 Hi, welcome to SF&F. Do you also have a translation for the first part of their conversation (before Floyd arrives)? – DavidW Jan 28 at 2:55 It is not as straightforward because, as noted above, the original is so grammatically inconsistent. Anyway (in contrast to what is said afterward) the content is banal filler, probably intended merely to establish their foreign credentials. The translation above that has the highest points (46 at the moment) is necessarily vague but adequate. – Ksenia Maryniak Jan 29 at 12:33 Add a comment Your Answer Sign up or log in Post as a guest Name Email Required, but never shown

Everything but the Girl received eight gold and two platinum album BPI Certifications in the UK,[5] and one gold album RIAA Certification in the US.[6] They had four top ten singles and twelve top forty singles in the UK.[7] Their biggest hit song "Missing" charted high in several countries and reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1995 and spent over seven months on the UK Singles Chart thanks to an extremely popular remix by Todd Terry which later led to a Brit Award nomination for Best British Single.
The duo have also been nominated for MTV, EMA and Ivor Novello Awards and received an award from the BMI for sales of over 3 million in the UK alone.
Watt and Thorn are also a couple, though they are very private about their relationship and personal life. While their relationship started during their time at university, it was not a publicised fact that they were romantically involved, or that they had subsequently married.[8]
They are currently inactive, and have not performed publicly since 2000.[1] Thorn has said in interviews she dislikes performing live and will no longer sing in front of a live audience.[9] Both Thorn and Watt have released several solo albums, but have expressed that it's unlikely that they'll record again as EBTG.[10]m00rpY

Moskva Kassiopeia montage a journey into Soviet 70s' Sci Fi Yaroslav Driuchin 31 subscribers Like many other Soviet boys, I was absolute fan of Sci-Fi USSR movies for youth, and it's not hard to see why - high budget, psychedelic, full of special effects, robots and battles with space pirates movies was really masterpieces of 70's filmmaking. This short montage contains excerpts from 2 brilliant movies of that era - "From Moscow to Cassiopeia"(1973) and "Teenagers in Space"(1974). Music by PEGASVS (just don't ask me why). Who never had an imaginary friend that only you could talk to and hear? The music is great, the animation is great. Appreciate it for what it is not what it isn't.

Dreigonix Dreigonix 3 years ago (edited) Some lyrics I made:
I sing a song of the sea From a far away time Of the rivers and rain That gave us life Crystal fountains so clear In our palaces old So long ago
Now our cities are gone But our music lives on Enchanted instruments play Crystal picks, magic strings And the silver chimes ring For a land led astray
Spirits of the water, we pray unto thee Spirits of the water, bring us prosperity Spirits of the water, we pray unto you Spirits of the water, to nature we are true

NEWS WEBSITE OF THE YEAR Subscribe now Free for one month Log in See all Travel Telegraph Travel Lists Which countries haven't embraced mandatory face masks? OLIVER SMITH DIGITAL TRAVEL EDITOR 25 NOVEMBER 2020 • 4:30PM 62 "Ah, Sweden. The Marmite of the pandemic" 'Ah, Sweden. The Marmite of the pandemic' CREDIT: GETTY There’s a startling lack of evidence to suggest face masks stop the spread of respiratory illnesses in the community, with the latest study from Denmark – the most comprehensive random control trial of its kind – concluding: “The recommendation to wear a surgical mask when outside the home among others did not reduce, at conventional levels of statistical significance, the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in mask wearers.”
No pandemic plan put forward by health authorities – until 2020 – contained the advice: “Make everyone, even the healthy, cover their face.” (Nor did any advise governments to lock up their citizens, but that’s another story).
Until less than six months ago, both the World Health Organisation and Public Health England did not recommend them, with Jenny Harries, deputy chief medical officer, even warning that they could increase the risk of infection (something seen in a 2015 Vietnamese study).
In March, chief medical officer Chris Whitty summed up the stance of most rational public health bodies around the world: “In terms of wearing a mask, our advice is clear: that wearing a mask if you don’t have an infection reduces the risk almost not at all. So we do not advise that.”
Since March, no new scientific studies have emerged that warrant abandoning decades of scientific consensus. We’ve seen drawings of men urinating on one another, and videos showing particles moving around a person’s head, but nothing in the realm of properly conducted clinical trials.
And yet...
Masks are everywhere.
In Spain, France and Italy, to name but a few, masks are obligatory whenever people leave their home (or hotel) – even in an empty park. In New York, such is their devotion to the cult, the “liberal” residents have taken to verbally abusing those who walk the streets bare-faced.
A nationwide mask obsession doesn’t seem to do much when it comes to tackling the spread of the disease. Spain, France and Italy have battled with some of the highest infection rates in Europe, despite the mask mandates. Furthermore, draconian mask rules turn once pleasant streets into a dystopian nightmare. When I’m on holiday, I don’t want muffled conversations and a sweaty rag glued to my face. I want to be greeted with smiles, not rows of fearful eyes.
So where can I go (after lockdown, that is)? Where are things relatively, dare I say, “normal”?
Short-haul Sweden Normal rating 8/10 Can I go? Yes, but you will need to self-isolate when you return to Britain. Ah, Sweden. The Marmite of the pandemic. Some think it is the only sane country in the world. Others think it is conducting some dastardly experiment in herd immunity. Its status as Covid hero/pariah has taken a hit recently, with PM Stefan Lofven overruling state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell and introducing new stricter guidelines. However, most of these remain voluntary: shops and restaurants are still open, masks are rare, and hugs are exchanged.

Where to go?
Sweden’s beautiful south. BA and SAS are offering regular flights to Stockholm and Gothenburg. See our pick of the best hotels in Sweden.
Norway Normal rating 7/10 Can I go? Only if you are able to self-quarantine for 10 days on arrival. Norway, like its Scandi neighbour, has not embraced face masks. Its health authority says: “The most important measure to avoid transmission is to keep a distance to others, maintain good hand hygiene and stay at home if you are ill.” Masks are only required on public transport and at the airport, and polling suggests 70% of Norwegians wear them rarely or never.
Covid cases per 100,000 (last 7 days): 69.3
Finland Normal rating 7/10 Can I go? Not yet. Plans to reopen to tourists on November 23 have been shelved. Finland’s mask policy mirrors Norway’s; they are required on public transport and in airports, but nowhere else. Polling also shows it has one of the lowest mask wearing rates in Europe, with 58% using them rarely or not at all. Alas, the country has not reopened its borders to tourists having mothballed plans to do so this month.
Covid cases per 100,000 (last 7 days): 47.9
Iceland Normal rating 6/10 Can I go? Yes, with provisos. All passengers arriving in Iceland can choose to either self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival or take two Covid-19 tests, one on arrival and another 5-6 days later. Test negative, and a land of relative normality awaits. Masks are only recommended when social distancing cannot be maintained – and not outdoors. Paul Sullivan went there recently for Telegraph Travel. He wrote: “It’s just a few hours since I was given the all-clear from a not-too-comfortable but blissfully quick Covid-test at Iceland’s Keflavik airport, and I’m neck-deep in the milky-blue, geothermally heated waters of the famous Blue Lagoon. In normal times, the lagoon pulls in around a million visitors a year, but today just a couple of hundred people are wading around with the venue’s trademark white silica smeared on their faces. And almost all the voices I hear are Icelandic.”
Covid cases per 100,000 (last 7 days): 23.5
Where to go?
Blow the budget at the dreamy Blue Lagoon Retreat. EasyJet, Wizz and Icelandair are offering flights to Reykjavik.
Now that looks very pleasant Switzerland Normal rating 5/10 Can I go? Yes, but you will need to self-isolate when you return to Britain. The mask rules in Switzerland are similar to Britain’s. They are required in shops, restaurants (when not sitting down), and other indoor public areas. However, the country is clinging on to normality in other ways, keeping businesses open and prioritising the economy. It has even been dubbed the new Sweden, with finance minister Ueli Maurer warning a second lockdown would be “disastrous”. He accused the Swiss National Covid-19 Science Task Force of “short-sightedness and moralising”, branding its scientists as “know-it-alls”. “We have to live, we have to be able to earn money, to be able to shop,” he said.
Covid cases per 100,000 (last 7 days): 352.9
Where to go?
Our regular contributor William Cook is a big fan of underrated Basel (EasyJet and BA will fly you there).
Pretty little Basel CREDIT: GETTY Estonia Normal rating 8/10 Can I go? Not unless you are able to self-isolate on arrival. Masks are recommended in crowded indoor spaces, but not mandatory. They trust people to make their own risk-based decisions. Sadly, if you’re arriving from the UK, you’ll need to self-isolate for 14 days, but you have the option of taking a test to reduce this.
Covid cases per 100,000 (last 7 days): 161
Best of the rest Mask wearing is relatively rare in Gibraltar, Denmark, Latvia, the Netherlands and Germany, but required in indoor public spaces. Belarus is the Sweden of Eastern Europe (no mask), but its volatile political situation hardly makes it an enticing travel option.
Long-haul I am struggling to find decent recommendations beyond Europe. The Foreign Office website contains little information on face mask rules for non-European countries, and much of what it has it out-of-date. This website has useful info and links but is not comprehensive. In the most part, they seem to be mandatory in indoor public spaces, but not outdoors. If you have any tips, leave them in the comment box below please.
Tanzania Normal rating 8/10 Can I go? Yes, but you will need to self-isolate when you return to Britain. A recent visitor to Tanzania, the so-called Sweden of Africa, Sarah Marshall wrote: “Borders have remained open, there are no testing requirements for entry, and anyone is allowed in. It sounds like a melting pot for a Covid casserole, but extraordinarily, official figures suggest there have been only 509 cases and 21 deaths – although those statistics haven’t been updated since May.
“In Arusha, I witnessed scenes I’d long forgotten in Europe: crowds squeezing through market stalls; bars spilling with noisy revellers; friends greeting each other with hugs in the street. No-one was wearing a mask.”
They are worn in airports and in public areas of hotels, however.
Covid cases per 100,000 (last 7 days): N/A (Early in the pandemic, President John Magufuli made the controversial decision to ignore lockdowns, and stopped reporting Covid infections after a papaya tested positive for the virus).
Cambodia Normal rating 6/10 Can I go? Yes, but there are lots of hoops to jump through (including a test before departure) A recent addition to the travel corridor list, Cambodia recommends masks in certain scenarios but this is only guidance. The FCDO website states: “You’re expected to wear a face covering when inside the airport and many airlines will ask for face coverings to be worn. While no penalties are currently being imposed by the Cambodian authorities for refusing to wear a face covering, our advice is to wear a face covering whenever requested to.”

The novel tells the story of Norman Bates, caretaker at an isolated motel who struggles under his domineering mother and becomes embroiled in a series of murders. The novel is considered as being Bloch's most enduring work and one of the most influential horror books of the 20th Century.[2]
The story was adapted into Alfred Hitchcock's seminal 1960 film of the same name, and was loosely adapted into the Bates Motel television series (2013-2017). Bloch later wrote two sequels, which are unrelated to any of the film sequels.
Contents 1 Plot 2 Allusions 3 Sequels 4 Adaptations 4.1 Film 5 References Plot Norman Bates, a middle-aged bachelor, is dominated by his mother, a mean-tempered, puritanical old woman who forbids him to have a life outside of her. They run a small motel together in the town of Fairvale, but business has floundered since the state relocated the highway. In the middle of a heated argument between them, a customer arrives, a young woman named Mary Crane.
Mary is on the run after impulsively stealing $40,000 from a client of the real estate company where she works. She stole the money so her boyfriend, Sam Loomis, could pay off his debts and they could finally get married. Mary arrives at the Bates Motel after accidentally turning off the main highway. Exhausted, she accepts Bates' invitation to have dinner with him at his house, an invitation that sends Mrs. Bates into a jealous rage; she screams, "I'll kill the bitch!", which Mary then hears.
During dinner, Mary gently suggests that Bates put his mother in a mental institution, but he denies there is anything wrong with her; "We all go a little mad sometimes", he says. Mary says goodnight and returns to her room, resolving to return the money so she will not end up like Bates. Moments later in the shower, however, a figure resembling an old woman frightens Mary with a butcher knife, and then beheads her.
Bates, who had passed out drunk after dinner, returns to the motel and finds Mary's bloody corpse. He is instantly convinced his mother is the murderer. He briefly considers letting her go to prison, but changes his mind after having a nightmare in which she sinks in quicksand, only to turn into him as she goes under. His mother comes to comfort him, and he decides to dispose of Mary's body, belongings, and car in the swamp, and go on with life as usual.
Meanwhile, Mary's sister, Lila, tells Sam of her sister's disappearance. They are soon joined by Milton Arbogast, a private investigator hired by Mary's boss to retrieve the money. Sam and Lila agree to let Arbogast lead the search for Mary. Arbogast eventually meets up with Bates, who says that Mary had left after one night; when he asks to talk with his mother, Bates refuses. This arouses Arbogast's suspicion, and he calls Lila and tells her that he is going to try to talk to Mrs. Bates. When he enters the house, the same mysterious figure who killed Mary ambushes him in the foyer, and kills him with a razor.
Sam and Lila go to Fairvale to look for Arbogast, and meet with the town sheriff, who tells them that Mrs. Bates has been dead for years, having committed suicide by poisoning her lover and herself. The young Norman had a nervous breakdown after finding them and was sent for a time to a mental institution. Sam and Lila go to the motel to investigate. Sam distracts Bates while Lila goes to get the sheriff—but she actually proceeds up to the house to investigate on her own. There she finds various books on occultism, abnormal psychology, metaphysics and one containing pornographic images, in his bedroom. During a conversation with Sam, Bates says that his mother had only pretended to be dead, and had communicated with him while he was in the institution. Bates then tells Sam that Lila tricked him and went up to the house and that his mother was waiting for her. Bates then knocks Sam unconscious with a liquor bottle that he'd been drinking from. At the house, Lila is horrified to discover Mrs. Bates's mummified corpse on the floor, in the fruit cellar. As she screams, a figure rushes into the room with a knife—Norman Bates, dressed in his mother's clothes. Sam regains consciousness, enters the room and subdues Norman before he can harm Lila.
At the police station, Sam talks to a psychiatrist who had examined Bates, while the county highway crew is out dredging the swamp to uncover the automobiles, revealing the bodies of Mary and Arbogast; a media frenzy imagines countless additional victims to be uncovered if the swamp is further drained, but "the newspaper writers didn't have to foot the bill for such a project." Sam learns that Bates and his mother had lived together in a state of total codependence ever since his father deserted them when he was still a young child. Along the way, introverted, awkward, and filled with seething rage, Norman became a secret transvestite, impersonating his mother. A bookworm, he became fascinated with the occult, spiritualism, and Satanism. When his mother took a lover named Joe Considine, Bates went over the edge with jealousy and poisoned them both, forging a suicide note in his mother's handwriting. To suppress the guilt of matricide, he developed a dissociative identity disorder ("split personality") in the outside world. He retrieved her corpse from the cemetery and preserved it and, whenever the illusion was threatened, would drink heavily, dress in her clothes and speak to himself in her voice. The "Mother" personality killed Mary because "she" was jealous of Norman feeling affection for another woman.
Bates is declared psychotic and put in a mental institution for life. Days later, the "Mother" personality completely takes over Bates's mind; he virtually becomes his mother. However, in a double-twist ending, "Mother" reveals she had to take over, as Norman's personality was actually the murderous psychotic one, and that "she" in fact couldn't hurt a fly.
Allusions In November 1957, two years before Psycho was first published, Ed Gein was arrested in his hometown of Plainfield, Wisconsin for the murders of two women. When police searched his home, they found furniture, silverware, and even clothing made of human skin and body parts. Psychiatrists examining him theorized that he was trying to make a "woman suit" to wear so he could pretend to be his dead mother, whom neighbors described as a puritan who dominated her son.
At the time of Gein's arrest, Bloch was living 35 miles (56 km) away from Plainfield in Weyauwega. Though Bloch was not aware of the Gein case at that time, he began writing with "the notion that the man next door may be a monster unsuspected even in the gossip-ridden microcosm of small-town life." The novel, one of several Bloch wrote about insane killers, was almost completed when Gein and his activities were revealed, so Bloch inserted a line alluding to Gein into one of the final chapters. Bloch was surprised years later when news of Gein's living in isolation with a religiously fanatical mother came to his attention. Bloch "discovered how closely the imaginary character I'd created resembled the real Ed Gein both in overt act and apparent motivation."[3]
Sequels Main articles: Psycho II (novel) and Psycho House Bloch wrote two sequels, Psycho II (1982) and Psycho House (1990); neither was related to the film sequels. In the novel Psycho II, Bates escapes the asylum disguised as a nun and makes his way to Hollywood. Universal Pictures allegedly did not want to film it because of its social commentary on splatter films.[citation needed] In the novel Psycho House, murders begin again when the Bates Motel is reopened as a tourist attraction.
A fourth installment, titled Robert Bloch's Psycho: Sanitarium written by Chet Williamson, was released in 2016. The book is set between the events of the original novel and Psycho II, recounting the events which took place in a state hospital for the criminally insane where Bates is an inpatient.
Adaptations Film Main articles: Psycho, Psycho II (film), Psycho III, Psycho IV: The Beginning, and Psycho (1998 film)

Bates Motel Set at Universal Studios, Hollywood, California Bloch's novel was adapted in 1960 into the feature film by director Alfred Hitchcock. It was written by Joseph Stefano and starred Anthony Perkins as Bates and Janet Leigh in an Academy Award-nominated performance as Marion Crane (changed from "Mary" for the film, as there was a Mary Crane in Phoenix at that time). Hitchcock helped devise a promotional and marketing scheme for his film that insisted that critics would not get advance screenings, and that no one would be admitted into the theater after the film had begun.[4] The promotional scheme also exhorted audiences not to reveal the twist ending. Twenty-three years after the release of Hitchcock's film and three years after the director's death came the first of three sequels, all featuring Perkins.
After Psycho III, there was also a television pilot named Bates Motel, in which Bates briefly appears played by another actor. It is not in continuity with the final sequel Psycho IV: The Beginning. Gus Van Sant directed a 1998 remake of the original film in which virtually every camera angle and line of dialogue was duplicated from the original. It starred Vince Vaughn as Bates and Anne Heche as Marion Crane. It was reviled by critics and performed poorly at the box office.
The Hitchcock version of the film is rated number one on the American Film Institute's list of one hundred most thrilling films.[5]

It is written as a dialogue between Plato's brother Glaucon and his mentor Socrates, narrated by the latter. The allegory is presented after the analogy of the sun (508b–509c) and the analogy of the divided line (509d–511e). All three are characterized in relation to dialectic at the end of Books VII and VIII (531d–534e).
Plato has Socrates describe a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall from objects passing in front of a fire behind them, and give names to these shadows. The shadows are the prisoners' reality.
Socrates explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall are not reality at all, for he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the manufactured reality that is the shadows seen by the prisoners. The inmates of this place do not even desire to leave their prison, for they know no better life. The prisoners manage to break their bonds one day, and discover that their reality was not what they thought it was. They discovered the sun, which Plato uses as an analogy for the fire that man cannot see behind. Like the fire that cast light on the walls of the cave, the human condition is forever bound to the impressions that are received through the senses. Even if these interpretations (or, in Kantian terminology, intuitions) are an absurd misrepresentation of reality, we cannot somehow break free from the bonds of our human condition—we cannot free ourselves from phenomenal state just as the prisoners could not free themselves from their chains. If, however, we were to miraculously escape our bondage, we would find a world that we could not understand—the sun is incomprehensible for someone who has never seen it. In other words, we would encounter another "realm", a place incomprehensible because, theoretically, it is the source of a higher reality than the one we have always known; it is the realm of pure Form, pure fact.[1]
Socrates remarks that this allegory can be paired with previous writings, namely the analogy of the sun and the analogy of the divided line.

Summary
Allegory of the cave. Left (From top to bottom): The sun; natural things; reflections of natural things; fire; artificial objects; shadows of artificial objects; Allegory level. Right (From top to bottom): "Good" idea, Ideas, Mathematical objects, Light, Creatures and Objects, Image, analogy of the sun, and the analogy of the divided line. Imprisonment in the cave Plato begins by having Socrates ask Glaucon to imagine a cave where people have been imprisoned from childhood (important to note that they were (based on text) imprisoned from childhood but not from birth). These prisoners are chained so that their legs and necks are fixed, forcing them to gaze at the wall in front of them and not look around at the cave, each other, or themselves (514a–b).[3] Behind the prisoners is a fire, and between the fire and the prisoners is a raised walkway with a low wall, behind which people walk carrying objects or puppets "of men and other living things" (514b).[3] The people walk behind the wall so their bodies do not cast shadows for the prisoners to see, but the objects they carry do ("just as puppet showmen have screens in front of them at which they work their puppets" (514a)[3]). The prisoners cannot see any of what is happening behind them, they are only able to see the shadows cast upon the cave wall in front of them. The sounds of the people talking echo off the walls, and the prisoners believe these sounds come from the shadows (514c).[3]
Socrates suggests that the shadows are reality for the prisoners because they have never seen anything else; they do not realize that what they see are shadows of objects in front of a fire, much less that these objects are inspired by real things outside the cave which they do not see (514b–515a).[3]
The fire, or human made light, and the puppets, used to make shadows, are done by the artists. This can be compared to how illusions are made with light and sound today, with electronics, videos, movies, and 3D visuals. Plato, however, indicates that the fire is also the political doctrine that is taught in a nation state. The artists use light and shadows to teach the dominant doctrines of a time and place.
Also, few humans will ever escape the cave. This is not some easy task, and only a true philosopher, with decades of preparation, would be able to leave the cave, up the steep incline. Most humans will live at the bottom of the cave, and a small few will be the major artists that project the shadows with the use of human-made light.
Departure from the cave Plato then supposes that one prisoner is freed. This prisoner would look around and see the fire. The light would hurt his eyes and make it difficult for him to see the objects casting the shadows. If he were told that what he is seeing is real instead of the other version of reality he sees on the wall, he would not believe it. In his pain, Plato continues, the freed prisoner would turn away and run back to what he is accustomed to (that is, the shadows of the carried objects). He writes "... it would hurt his eyes, and he would escape by turning away to the things which he was able to look at, and these he would believe to be clearer than what was being shown to him."[3]
Plato continues: "Suppose... that someone should drag him... by force, up the rough ascent, the steep way up, and never stop until he could drag him out into the light of the sun."[3] The prisoner would be angry and in pain, and this would only worsen when the radiant light of the sun overwhelms his eyes and blinds him.[3]
"Slowly, his eyes adjust to the light of the sun. First he can only see shadows. Gradually he can see the reflections of people and things in water and then later see the people and things themselves. Eventually, he is able to look at the stars and moon at night until finally he can look upon the sun itself (516a)."[3] Only after he can look straight at the sun "is he able to reason about it" and what it is (516b).[3] (See also Plato's analogy of the sun, which occurs near the end of The Republic, Book VI.[4][5])
Return to the cave Plato continues, saying that the freed prisoner would think that the world outside the cave was superior to the world he experienced in the cave and attempt to share this with the prisoners remaining in the cave attempting to bring them onto the journey he had just endured; "he would bless himself for the change, and pity [the other prisoners]" and would want to bring his fellow cave dwellers out of the cave and into the sunlight (516c).[3]
The returning prisoner, whose eyes have become accustomed to the sunlight, would be blind when he re-enters the cave, just as he was when he was first exposed to the sun (516e).[3] The prisoners, according to Plato, would infer from the returning man's blindness that the journey out of the cave had harmed him and that they should not undertake a similar journey. Plato concludes that the prisoners, if they were able, would therefore reach out and kill anyone who attempted to drag them out of the cave (517a).[3]
Symbolism

Find sources: "Allegory of the cave" – news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR (January 2020) (Learn how and when to remove this template message) The allegory contains many forms of symbolism used to instruct the reader in the nature of perception. The cave represents superficial physical reality. It also represents ignorance, as those in the cave live accepting what they see at face value. Ignorance is further represented by the darkness that engulfs them because they cannot know the true objects that form the shadows, leading them to believe the shadows are the true forms of the objects. The chains that prevent the prisoners from leaving the cave represent that they are trapped in ignorance, as the chains are stopping them from learning the truth. The shadows cast on the walls of the cave represent the superficial truth, which is the illusion that the prisoners see in the cave. The freed prisoner represents those who understand that the physical world is only a shadow of the truth, and the sun that is glaring the eyes of the prisoners represents the higher truth of ideas. The light further represents wisdom, as even the paltry light that makes it into the cave allows the prisoners to know shapes.
Themes in the allegory appearing elsewhere in Plato's work The allegory is probably related to Plato's theory of Forms, according to which the "Forms" (or "Ideas"), and not the material world known to us through sensation, possess the highest and most fundamental kind of reality. Only knowledge of the Forms constitutes real knowledge or what Socrates considers "the good".[6] Socrates informs Glaucon that the most excellent people must follow the highest of all studies, which is to behold the Good. Those who have ascended to this highest level, however, must not remain there but must return to the cave and dwell with the prisoners, sharing in their labors and honors.
Plato's Phaedo contains similar imagery to that of the allegory of the cave; a philosopher recognizes that before philosophy, his soul was "a veritable prisoner fast bound within his body... and that instead of investigating reality of itself and in itself is compelled to peer through the bars of a prison."[7]
Scholarly discussion Scholars debate the possible interpretations of the allegory of the cave, either looking at it from an epistemological standpoint—one based on the study of how Plato believes we come to know things—or through a political (politeia) lens.[6] Much of the scholarship on the allegory falls between these two perspectives, with some completely independent of either. The epistemological view and the political view, fathered by Richard Lewis Nettleship and A. S. Ferguson, respectively, tend to be discussed most frequently.[6] Nettleship interprets the allegory of the cave as representative of our innate intellectual incapacity, in order to contrast our lesser understanding with that of the philosopher, as well as an allegory about people who are unable or unwilling to seek truth and wisdom.[8] Ferguson, on the other hand, bases his interpretation of the allegory on the claim that the cave is an allegory of human nature and that it symbolizes the opposition between the philosopher and the corruption of the prevailing political condition.[7][8]
Cleavages have emerged within these respective camps of thought, however. Much of the modern scholarly debate surrounding the allegory has emerged from Martin Heidegger's exploration of the allegory, and philosophy as a whole, through the lens of human freedom in his book The Essence of Human Freedom: An Introduction to Philosophy and The Essence of Truth: On Plato's Cave Allegory and Theaetetus.[9] In response, Hannah Arendt, an advocate of the political interpretation of the allegory, suggests that through the allegory, Plato "wanted to apply his own theory of ideas to politics".[10] Conversely, Heidegger argues that the essence of truth is a way of being and not an object.[11] Arendt criticised Heidegger's interpretation of the allegory, writing that "Heidegger…is off base in using the cave simile to interpret and 'criticize' Plato's theory of ideas".[10]
Various scholars also debate the possibility of a connection between the work in the allegory and the cave and the work done by Plato considering the analogy of the divided line and the analogy of the sun. The divided line is a theory presented to us in Plato's work the Republic. This is displayed through a dialogue given between Socrates and Glaucon. In which they explore the possibility of a visible and intelligible world. with the visible world consisting of items such as shadows and reflections (displayed as AB) then elevating to the physical item itself (displayed as BC) while the intelligible world consists of mathematical reasoning (displayed by CD) and philosophical understanding (displayed by DE).[12] Many seeing this as an explanation to the way in which the prisoner in the allegory of the cave goes through the journey. First in the visible word with shadows such as those on the wall. Socrates suggests that the shadows are reality for the prisoners because they have never seen anything else; they do not realize that what they see are shadows of objects in front of a fire, much less that these objects are inspired by real things outside the cave which they do not see[12] then the realization of the physical with the understanding of concepts such as the tree being separate from its shadow. It enters the intelligible world as the prisoner looks at the sun. Leading to the Analogy of the Sun.[13]
The divided line – (AC) is generally taken as representing the visible world and (CE) as representing the intelligible world[14] The Analogy of the Sun refers to the moment in book six in which Socrates after being urged by Glaucon to define goodness purposes instead, an analogy through a "child of goodness". Socrates reveals this "child of goodness" to be the sun, proposing that just as the sun illuminates, bestowing the ability to see and be seen by the eye,[15]:169 with its light so the idea of goodness illumines the intelligible with truth. Leading some scholars to believe this forms a connection of the sun and the intelligible world within the realm of the allegory of the cave.
Influence The themes and imagery of Plato's cave have appeared throughout Western thought and culture. Some examples include:
Thomas Browne in his 1658 discourse Urn Burial stated: "A Dialogue between two Infants in the womb concerning the state of this world, might handsomely illustrate our ignorance of the next, whereof methinks we yet discourse in Platoes denne, and are but Embryon Philosophers". Evolutionary biologist Jeremy Griffith's book A Species In Denial includes the chapter "Deciphering Plato's Cave Allegory".[16] The films The Conformist, The Matrix, Dark City, The Truman Show, Us and City of Ember model Plato's allegory of the cave.[17][18] The 2013 movie After the Dark has a segment where Mr. Zimit likens James' life to the Allegory of the Cave.[19] This segment in the movie is at 1:05:36 – 1:07:00, and there's also a soundtrack named "Plato's Cave" on the OST album. The Cave by José Saramago culminates in the discovery of Plato's Cave underneath the Center, "an immense complex fusing the functions of an office tower, a shopping mall and a condominium."[20] Emma Donoghue acknowledges the influence of Plato's allegory of the cave on her novel Room.[21] Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 explores the themes of reality and perception also explored in Plato's allegory of the cave and Bradbury references Plato's work in the novel.[22][23] José Carlos Somoza's novel The Athenian Murders is presented as a murder mystery but features many references to Plato's philosophy including the allegory of the cave.[24] Novelist James Reich argues Nicholas Ray's film Rebel Without a Cause, starring James Dean, Natalie Wood, and Sal Mineo as John "Plato" Crawford is influenced by and enacts aspects of the allegory of the cave.[25] In an episode of the television show Legion, entitled "Chapter 16", the narrator uses Plato's Cave to explain "the most alarming delusion of all", narcissism. H. G. Wells' short novel The Country of the Blind has a similar "Return to the Cave" situation when a man accidentally discovers a village of blind people and wherein he tries to explain how he can "see", only to be ridiculed and laughed at.[26][circular reference] See also Allegorical interpretations of Plato Archetype Analogy of the sun Analogy of the divided line Brain in a vat Flatland The Form of the Good Intelligibility (philosophy) Nous – Noumenon Phaneron Plato's Republic in popular culture References Ferguson, A. In the process, the kangaroo introduces Dot to a number of other animals, teaching her a greater appreciation for nature.
Cast Barbara Frawley as Dot Joan Bruce as the Kangaroo and Dot's Mother Spike Milligan as Mr. Platypus June Salter as Mrs. Platypus Ross Higgins as Willie Wagtail Ron Haddrick as Dot's Father Lola Brooks Peter Gwynne Richard Meikle as Jack the Farmhand Production Yoram and Sandra Gross wanted to make an Australian animated feature for the world market. They read a series of books before deciding on Dot and the Kangaroo. Two thirds of the budget was provided by the Australian Film Commission.[1]
The movie backdrop was filmed on location in and around Jenolan Caves and the Warragamba Dam Catchment Area of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, Australia. Although the film uses many of the same elements as other animated children's musicals involving animals, such as many of the Disney animated features from the United States, the film is essentially Australian in its use of icons and accents. It also references Indigenous Australian culture in some scenes which depict animation of cave paintings and aboriginal dancing.[2]
Soundtrack The movie featured an original soundtrack including several lyrical melodies composed by Bob Young with lyrics John Palmer, and Marion Von Alderstein, while Bob Young provided additional lyrics, and they were recorded by Maurie Wilmore. A soundtrack album was released in 1982 combined with the soundtrack of Around the World with Dot. The music from Dot and the Kangaroo appears on the B-Side.

Additionally, the film's use of animation set against photographic backgrounds established the style for many of his later films.
Release In the 1980s, the first seven films were released on VHS in the United States, the first one by Magnetic Video, the next two by CBS/Fox Video and the next four by Family Home Entertainment. A DVD version of the film was released on 30 October 2001 by Hen's Tooth Video. In Australia there is a complete series DVD set of all the Dot films. They also were released on DVD on Digiview Entertainment. One of them is the first film which was released in 2005 by Digiview Productions and re-released in 2006 by Digiview Entertainment. The first film was also treated as a public domain film in the United States, though it remains copyrighted.
The various films were shown on the Disney Channel in the late 1980s through the 1990s in the United States, and on the Family Channel in Canada.
Sequels The Yoram Gross Studios followed up the first film with another eight movies between 1981 and 1994. The theme behind all of the films in the Dot series is the negative impact of humanity on animal life in nature. The sequels are as follows:
