This is a new and updated version of the mix first posted here, 10 years ago to the day: https://soundcloud.com/djcira/sleepwalking

For my 10 year Soundcloud anniversary I decided to revisit the very first mix I posted, both as an exercise in craft and well, I just wanted to do these tracks justice. The original mix represents the first output after a long transition from vinyl to digital DJing. What resulted is adorable, but it's not exactly the mix I had in my head at the time, nor now. Let's put the past decade of learnings to use!

What's changed?

• The gear. Original mix was recorded on Traktor 2 with a VCI-100, updated mix is on a Pioneer setup.
• The transitions. I kept the original spirit of the mixes as much as possible, many mix points are the same, others are not. Generally speaking, transitions are a lot longer, smoother, and any phrasing issues were "corrected". EQ blends are of course completely different, who knows what I did back then.
• That's about it. Tracklist is identical and I tried to recreate the setup I had at the time by disabling key lock/master tempo and not using any FX (ok ok there may be a teensy echo on the last 20 secs).

What was the experience like?

• Humbling. I thought highly of my skills back in 2012, but there are many things that I would call mistakes today that I would never keep in a studio mix.
• Hard work. In order to backwards engineer the mix points, I had to listen to the original over and over again (did I mention humbling?) and recreate everything in Rekordbox. I for sure used loop functionality in the original mix so this was tricky at times.
• Surprising. I didn't let tracks breathe nearly as much as I do now. Back then, I mixed hard and fast. This had the effect of making my mixes more exciting and creative, despite not sounding as smooth. I miss that raw energy and obvious sound of two tracks in the mix together.
• Nostalgic. I didn't anticipate how much it would make me reflect on my life in 2012. Hearing those tracks over and over and performing the mix many times again, it was almost like traveling back in time.

I wouldn't normally recommend going back to recreate old mixes, but given the right context and the right tracks, I can now see what a rewarding experience it can be. In the day to day, progression can be difficult to see -- sometimes you need a healthy dive into your past work to understand how far you've come.

The 2022 version is definitely the same mix...but it's also very different. I'm very happy with the result, this is the mix I intended to make. Enjoy!

5 years in the making! I started putting together this mix in early 2014, with the structure and EQ being completed not too long after. Despite zeroing in on my artistic vision as I practiced, something wasn't sitting right, so I put it away to focus on other things. Each year I would bring it out again, relearn all the moves and pacing, tweaking things here or there and getting to the point of recording several takes. But before I could finish, it would get shelved again either by accident or re-prioritization of other endeavors.

Cut to present day, I made it a 2019 goal to finish this once and for all and so here we are.

This is the first of a two-part series of emo mixes that are on the deep and dark side of house. Part One, Mind Games, tells the story of being in the early stages of a new relationship, where things aren't what they seem. Overtones of danger, sex and longing, with a hint of foreboding of the pain that is follow. It's haunting, yet compelling -- you know you shouldn't continue down the same path but you simply cannot stop yourself. Fucking mind games.

Contest rules state to cut a mix "in a proper club opening-style format" with the grand prize being a 10-11pm DJ set @ Hawthorn opening for BRi and Subset.

Lost in the Afterparty

House and garage heads! This is a follow up to last years' banging mix, "Lost in the Party". I wanted to capture the spirit of the 2013 mix with some of my favorite tracks of the spring and summer but with an "after party" vibe. At just over 30 minutes, it's not as long as the original but is no less exciting!!

It begins with the track of the summer, Hodgson's "One Spliff", which warms you up for the impending and heavy-hitting garage sounds to follow. Some big names and big tracks take you into the peak of the mix (Sidney Charles, Copy Paste Soul, Dusky) and then I smooth it out with a much under-appreciated dancefloor gem from Echonomist (featuring the vocals of Boot Slap). The vibe is strong as Groove Armada takes it deep with their tech-house builder "Pork Soda" and then we end the mix with the sounds of Dale Howard and Audiojack (doing a remix of Hot Since 82's "Like You") as a nice reprise of those earlier garage basslines.

Started off the night with some jazzy deep tracks from Audio Werner and Desos (it's Friday night!) into the 2009 classic "Think About It" from Olivier Desmet's San Francisco label, Amenti Music. Kept the "Kool Vibe" going with a solid vocal track that always hits the spot and is reminiscent of house from back in the day.

For the second half of the set, I changed it up and threw down some current house and garage from 2014. Played two tracks off of Copy Paste Soul's killer Gruuv release and a deep and witchy vocal track from Dusky that makes my body shiver. Had to give a shout out to Waze & Odyssey's quality label, W&O Street Tracks, with Citizen and Ashworths "Situation" followed by a piano house track from everyone's favorite and mysterious, Claptone. Finished off the set with "One Spliff" from Hodgson that I'm calling out as the huge chune of the summer. ENJOY.
