On Wednesday 23 February, all Middle and Senior School students participated in our annual Summer Sports Day. In Term 3 the Central Australia Power of 9 group experienced the time of their lives. Boys were challenged with a new learning environment, physically challenging tasks, as well as learning about the rich and beautiful Tasmanian Aboriginal culture. At the end of their term the boys travelled for 12 days around the east and west coast of Tasmania learning the Tasmanian Aboriginal culture, meeting amazing people and exploring places they had never seen before. Congratulations to all Year 12s on completing the Run-a-thon in support of Bethlehem House Tasmania. Join Harry Jones (School Captain) and Benjamin Horsham (School Vice Captain) as they recap the 12 hour Run-a-thon, as well as interviews with students and staff throughout the night. The boys ran for 12 hours overnight with over 520 laps (200km) of the War Memorial Oval completed. Our Year 12 boys have been campaigning for their chosen charity, the Hobart Women’s Shelter throughout the year, finishing with the Run-a-thon last term where as a group the boys rain for 12 hours overnight on the War Memorial Oval. Join Ewan Sloan (School Captain), Alexander Kuzis (School Vice-Captain) and Noah Sargent (Year 12 Prefect) as they interview Janet Saunders (CEO of the Hobart Women’s Shelter), discuss programs that are run by the shelter, and listen to some interviews with the boys throughout the evening. Together, Year 12 ran 557 laps (183km) over the evening and raised over $17,000 for the Hobart Women’s Shelter. The Year 8 Project is a major piece of student negotiated work involving planning, research and personal reflection. Each project undertaken should involve at least 25 hours of work over 20 weeks outside of school. It is an opportunity for students to follow a passion or try something new, developing skills along the way. It aims to develop forward planning, perseverance, determination, resilience and personal gratification.Projects had to integrate at least one theoretical strand from the Year 8 Integrated Unit studied throughout the year, including self and identity, making a difference, sustainability and future impacts or community interconnectedness. The Year 8 Drama Production class have a huge week coming up with their performances for their Play on Tour kicking off on Monday. The boys have been working towards these performances all term. They will be visiting six primary schools in total over two days to showcase their devised plays called ‘Jack and the Gumtree’ and ‘The Ausvengers’. The boys will then head to Sydney for the night to participate in a NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts) workshop to further develop their Drama skills. Our Year 12 boys have been campaigning for their chosen charity The Smith Family having completed Freezin’ for a Reason and the Swimathon, ‘Make a Splash, Leave a Ripple’ in order to raise funds and awareness. As a result of their fundraising efforts, and swimming a whopping 1,813 laps of the Collegiate Pool, totalling over 45km, Year 12 raised over $10,000.In this podcast Nick Smart (Year 12 Prefect) chats with Luca Gentile (Year 12 Prefect) and Oliver Burrows-Cheng (School Captain) with crosses to the Swimathon.
On Friday 30 August The Hutchins School were very fortunate to have the R U OK? Trust the Signs Tour visit. It was a wonderful educational experience for boys from Years 7-12, learning how to look out for and actively support friends, family and colleagues in need. The Middle and Senior School House Swimming Carnival was held on Wednesday 14 August at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre. House carnivals provide a wonderful opportunity for Middle and Senior School students to come together and participate in a team environment. This year’s carnival provided much excitement with the introduction of extra 25m races that ran in the dive pool throughout the day as well as a number of new novelty events involving stand up paddleboards and inflatable packrafts.Congratulations to everyone who competed throughout the day and a huge thank you to all staff who assisted in the smooth running of the carnival, in particular to Mr Jason Berry and Mr Sam FitzGerald for their meticulous organisation and planning. Congratulations to School House who took home the Swimming Cup.
