Hard skills are easily measurable and quantifiable skills, such as welding or heart surgery. Soft skills are the personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively, harmoniously and productively with other people. Helping Our Kids Have Resiliency“We’re not just raising kids, we’re raising resilient adults. We’re raising spiritual beings.”

Join Lisa Nehring on the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network.

Thank you to our Network Sponsor: CTC Math

In a world where people easily crumble like delicate snowflakes and take offense at the drop of a hat, it’s high time we pondered this vital question: Are our children truly growing in resiliency?

Are they emerging as fearless warriors, fortified with unyielding character and an indomitable spirit? Let me tell you, this remarkable gift of resiliency will serve as their secret weapon in navigating an increasingly secular world.

So join me on this resilience adventure as we explore the importance of resilience and why it’s high time we raise a generation of tenacious individuals who can conquer any challenge that comes their way. Trust me, it’ll be one heck of a ride.

Get Intentional! In her excellent book, appropriately titled, Grit, Angela Duckworth takes on the task of developing the idea of resilience in our children. She advocates for making resilience development a part of kids’ life skills curriculum.

I couldn’t agree more. Our kids need resilience. It’s what allows them to go out and compete, take risks, fail, and try again.

Key Ingredients for Developing ResiliencePractice– Practice is what lets us learn as we go. To practice and develop well, we must get assessments and feedback.
Purpose– Resilience is not always about pursuing those things that we might have a natural inclination toward. Students should consider pursuing something that they can develop an interest in over the long term.
Hope– This is tied to trying and failing. Failure is a huge part of developing resilience. We need to teach our kids that success does not come without failure. Winners keep pursuing goals despite setbacks.
Time– We need to set aside time to practice with deliberation, fail, and succeed.
Create Some Resilience Goals

Angela Duckworth has some practical recommendations for bestowing the remarkable gift of resilience to your children:Choose something that requires deliberate daily practice.

Are you facing the challenge of a child who seems uninterested in their homeschooling journey? Do you hear complaints of, “I’m bored. This is boring!” You’re not alone. Many parents encounter this hurdle, but with the right strategies, you can turn this around. Inspired by insights from the podcast “Goldilocks and the Teen Years,” let’s explore how you can reignite your child’s passion for learning.

Thank you to our Sponsor: CTC Math.

1. Finding the Spark: Motivating Your Homeschooler Beyond Being BoredFirstly, understand that motivation is key. Every child has unique interests and learning styles, and tapping into these can make a world of difference. Try incorporating diverse teaching methods – maybe your child thrives on visual aids, or perhaps they’re more hands-on learners. Remember, the goal is to make learning engaging and fun. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, and set realistic goals together. This not only motivates but also gives them a sense of accomplishment.

2. Setting Realistic Expectations forBored TeensIt’s important to remember that age matters. What works for a teenager might not be suitable for a younger child. Tailor your curriculum and teaching style to match your child’s age and developmental stage. This doesn’t mean lowering standards, but rather aligning them with your child’s capabilities. Be patient and be prepared to adjust your approach as they grow and their interests evolve.

3. The Goldilocks Principle: Just Right LearningThis principle, as discussed in “Goldilocks and the Teen Years,” is about finding the ‘just right’ challenge for your child. Not too easy, not too hard, but just enough to stretch their abilities without overwhelming them. It’s about creating a learning environment that’s neither overly structured nor too lax, but perfectly suited to your child’s individual needs.

You’ve Got ThisEvery homeschooling journey is unique and comes with its own set of challenges. Remember, it’s okay to seek help and advice. Stay flexible, stay patient, and most importantly, stay connected with your child’s learning needs and interests. Together, you can overcome the hurdle of boredom and create a fulfilling and enjoyable homeschooling experience.

Welcome to our latest chat on LifeSkills101, sponsored by CTCMath.com, where we talk about the super important skills every young person needs to get ready for grown-up life. It doesn’t matter if they are planning to go to college, get a job right after school, or do something totally different, there are some skills that are just must-haves.

Let’s dive into the three big ones:Being Your Own Boss (Agency), Knowing Who You Are (Integrated Identity), and Having a Bunch of Cool Skills (Competencies).

What’s Being Your Own Boss (Agency)?First up, being your own boss, or Agency, is all about knowing you can change things around you and make decisions that matter. It’s like being the captain of your ship, deciding where to go and what to do. It means setting goals, like finishing a big project or saving up for something special, and not giving up until you get there. It also means being brave enough to stand up for what you need and want, and taking responsibility when things don’t go as planned.

Knowing Who You Are (Integrated Identity)Next, we talked about how important it is to know who you are, which is your Integrated Identity. It’s all about understanding what you believe in, what’s important to you, and what you want to do in the world. When you know who you are, making decisions gets easier because you can ask yourself, “Does this fit with what I believe and who I want to be?”

Having a Bunch of Cool Skills (Competencies)The last big skill set we covered is having a bunch of cool skills, or Competencies. This isn’t just about being good at math or knowing how to write. It’s also about understanding your feelings and getting along with others, plus knowing how to handle real-life stuff that comes your way. We talked about how learning different things can help you do great in the future, no matter what you decide to do.

Learning in Your Own WayWe also chatted about how learning isn’t the same for everyone. Some people learn best by doing things their own way, especially when it comes to what they’re really interested in. If you’re learning at home or in a way that’s different from regular school, it’s all about making sure what you’re learning fits what you’re good at and what you like.

Getting Ready for What’s NextThe world is changing super fast, especially with all the new tech stuff happening. That’s why it’s super important to be ready for whatever comes next. Knowing about the latest gadgets and how the world works can help make sure you’re ready for all the awesome opportunities that are coming.

Show Notes: LifeSkills101 Podcast – “Boys with Pens” with Special Host, Beth PurcellIn this special episode, we welcome Beth Purcell, a renowned writing coach from True North Homeschool Academy. Beth shares her expertise on teaching writing to boys, focusing on their unique linear thinking patterns.

Beth starts by explaining linear thinking. It’s a straightforward, logical process that many boys naturally adopt. This way of thinking influences how they approach writing tasks.

Understanding this linear mindset is key to teaching boys effectively. It’s not about changing how they think but leveraging it. Beth suggests strategies that align with their logical progression of ideas.

First, use structured writing assignments. These provide a clear framework for boys to follow. Outlines and templates can guide their thoughts from start to finish.

Introduce writing exercises that build on their interests.Topics like sports, science, or technology can motivate boys to write. Engagement increases when they’re invested in the subject matter.

Incorporate visual aids and graphic organizers.Tools like mind maps help boys plan their writing visually. This method complements their linear thinking style.

Beth emphasizes the importance of short, achievable writing tasks. Breaking down assignments into manageable parts reduces overwhelm. It encourages boys to tackle writing with confidence.

Feedback should be constructive and specific.Highlight what they’re doing right and where they can improve. This approach fosters a growth mindset towards writing.

Encourage revision as a natural part of the writing process.Beth suggests showing examples of revised works. This demonstrates that even good writing can be made better with effort.

Beth shares success stories from her coaching experience. These anecdotes illustrate how boys can excel in writing with the right support.

To wrap up, Beth offers encouragement to parents and educators. She assures them that with patience and tailored strategies, boys can become confident writers.

Welcome to our latest chat on LifeSkills101, where we talk about the super important skills every young person needs to get ready for grown-up life.

BONUS PODCASTS | Soft SkillsIt’s a well-known adage in the business world that you are hired for your hard skills and fired for your soft skills. It might be a well-known adage, but what are hard and soft skills?

  • Hard skills, such as welding or heart surgery, are easily measurable and quantifiable.
  • Soft skills are the personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively, harmoniously, and productively with other people.

Helping Our Kids Have Resiliency“We’re not just raising kids, we’re raising resilient adults. We’re raising spiritual beings.”

Join Lisa Nehring on the Ultimate Homeschool Radio Show in celebration of our 10th Birthday Celebration!

Commit to doing this activity for 2 years.
Finish what you’ve started for a specified interval.

Rethinking Homeschooling: A Functional Approach to the Homeschool RoomIn a recent talk about homeschooling, the focus shifted to the idea of a “Homeschool Room.” The talk challenged the need for a set classroom space.

One family’s experience stood out. They didn’t prioritize a traditional room but rather focused on what worked best for their kids. Their setup was wherever the kids felt comfortable to learn—bed, porch, or the dining table.

They avoided clutter by using online resources instead of paper books. They organized borrowed books to avoid misplacing them. The focus was on making things practical and adaptable.

Understanding their kids’ unique learning styles was crucial. They realized not all kids learn well by sitting still, so they embraced movement-based learning. They mixed exercises like burpees or jumping jacks with memorization techniques, which surprisingly worked well.

Their story suggested that a “Pinterest-worthy” Homeschool Room isn’t necessary. A beautiful but unused space is merely for show, not for learning.

The takeaway was simple: homeschooling isn’t about a specific homeschool room but about being flexible and understanding what’s best for each child’s learning. The talk concluded with advice for new homeschooling families: don’t feel pressured to recreate a school-like environment at home. Embrace diverse learning spaces and styles; it’s often better for a child’s education.

Ultimately, it’s not about the room; it’s about the approach and the individual needs of the children that truly matter.

Post 2020 College/Post Covid College Decision

One of the concerns I hear all the time from homeschoolers is worry that their students won’t get into college. Look, it’s actually easier than ever to be admitted into college; homeschoolers traditionally perform extremely well on standardized tests and do a great job of competing and winning in National Competitions, such as the National Spelling Bee, Geography Bee, etc.

Getting into college might be easier than ever but considering the ROI of college costs is also more important than ever.

College costs has sky-rocketed and on average cost between $22,000 and $50,000 per year! It’s time for Parents and Student to take a hard look at the ROI of college financial, social and spiritual costs!

Cultivating Writing Confidence: 6 Tips to Help Your Reluctant WriterSpecial Host: Beth Purcell

Welcome to another episode of the Life Skills 101 podcast on the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network! Today, we have a special guest, Beth Purcell from True North Homeschool Academy, joining us to discuss a topic that many homeschooling parents encounter – helping reluctant writers find their voice and confidence. Whether your child struggles with putting pen to paper or faces writing assignments with trepidation, these six tips will guide you in nurturing their writing skills. Let’s get started with our first reluctant writer tip.

Reluctant Writer Tip 1: Reorient – Discover Their InterestsThe first step in helping a reluctant writer is to reorient their perspective on writing. Begin by understanding their interests, passions, and hobbies. Encourage them to write about subjects they genuinely care about. By tapping into their curiosity, you’ll motivate them to explore and express themselves through the written word.

Tip 2 for the Reluctant Writer: Reconstruct – Create a Supportive Writing EnvironmentOnce you’ve identified their interests, reconstruct their writing environment to be inviting and inspiring. Set up a dedicated writing space with supplies readily available. Make sure they have access to books, journals, and other writing materials. A comfortable and inviting atmosphere can help alleviate writing anxiety.

Reluctant Writer Tip 3: Restrict – Start with Small, Achievable GoalsReluctant writers often become overwhelmed by lengthy assignments. To avoid this, restrict the scope by breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable goals. Encourage them to write a paragraph, a sentence, or even just a word a day. Gradually, they’ll build confidence and feel less intimidated by the writing process.

Tip 4: Refine – Provide Constructive FeedbackFeedback is essential in improving writing skills. However, it’s crucial to provide constructive, not critical, feedback. Focus on their strengths first and then gently address areas for improvement. Offer guidance, suggest revisions, and celebrate their progress. This positive reinforcement will boost their confidence and motivation.

Tip 5: Release – Encourage Creative FreedomAs your reluctant writer gains confidence, it’s essential to release control and encourage creative freedom. Allow them to choose their topics and writing styles. Embrace their unique voice and style, even if it differs from your own expectations. This freedom will foster a sense of ownership over their writing.

Tip 6: Regroup – Seek Additional Resources and SupportFinally, if your child continues to struggle, don’t hesitate to regroup and seek additional resources and support. Consider enrolling them in a writing class or workshop tailored to their age and skill level. Online courses, writing coaches, and peer editing groups can provide valuable assistance and a fresh perspective.

Conclusion:Helping your reluctant writer find their voice and confidence is a journey that requires patience, understanding, and adaptability. Remember to reorient their perspective by tapping into their interests, reconstruct their writing environment for inspiration, restrict tasks into achievable goals, refine their skills through constructive feedback, release creative freedom, and regroup when necessary with external resources and support.

Beth Purcell from True North Homeschool Academy has shared these valuable insights with us today. Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Life Skills 101 podcast. We hope these tips empower you to guide your reluctant writer on a path toward becoming a more confident and capable wordsmith. Happy writing, and may your homeschooling journey be filled with creativity and growth!

The Future of WorkWhat about the future of work? Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives. Titus 3:14

Career Stages

  • High school
  • Launching as an Adult can include college
  • Early Career
  • Late Career
  • Mid-Career
  • Retirement

What Economies will Play a Role in the Future?

  • Big Tech Economy
  • Precision Economy
  • Exodus Economy
  • Empath Economy
  • Gig Economy

Future Workers will need Technical Skills as well as Soft Skills, particularly Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration and Communication Skills. The good news is that a solid high school course of study will lay a solid foundation for these type of skills. Additional, future workers will need the ability to upskill and re-skill, as well as have a zeal for life long learning.

What is the best way to navigate the future? As always, I recommend start with the end in mind and working backwards. What kind of lifestyle does your student want to have, where do they want to live, what work do they believe in and want to invest in doing?Assess your student, your current resources and your location, as all of these offer various challenges and opportunities. And don’t forget that you are one of your student’s best resources. What are your areas of interests and trained vocation? Your kids have a jump start on whatever it is you share with them, because of what you already know.

Craft a clear plan that includes

  • Vocational Training
  • Physical Training
  • Emotional Skills
  • Spiritual Discipleship
  • Social Skills
  • Soft Skills / Executive Functioning Skills

Replay | How to Heal from BullyingToday on Life Skills 101, we are talking with Candice Duggar, the mastermind behind Bullied, Broken, Redeemed. Teaching our kids how to navigate the online world and keeping themselves emotionally and physically safe is going to be a necessary life skill, as the online world is going to continue to expand and grow; many of our kids may find themselves working in the online space.

Candice share the journey of bullying in their own family and how that changed the course of her family and life- from working with Fortune 100 Companies to Homeschooling Momma and the creator of Bullied, Broken, Redeemed.

“There is no safe. There is only safer.” Candace Duggar

The program builds in Executive Functioning and Soft Skills and Non-Verbal Communication Skills

Of kids who will be bullied, 90% don’t tell their parents, and 70% don’t tell anyone. Most bullying takes place after 10 p.m. at night. Parents, collect your kid’s cell phones at night, and turn off the Wi-Fi.

Give kids a “safe” word and develop a family policy about how to help your kids out of unsafe circumstances.

Begin talking to your kids sooner than later about safety online and cyberbullying. Kids as young as 2-5 years old are playing online games, which means kids are getting bullied at younger and younger ages.

We are meant to be in community, but we are not meant to be in a community of a million people! The online world encourages shallowness; as Christians, we want our kids to grow in wisdom and discernment. This will take intentionality as parents!

*This course, Digital Leadership, is no longer available at TNHA.

Building your Mom Team

Today on the show, True North Homeschool Academy Director, Lisa Nehring is joined by Jennifer Uren, who podcasts at This Mom Knows. Life Jennifer says, “Every business “yes” can feel like a parenting “no” – and that’s when mom guilt kicks in. Through her website and podcast, This Mom Knows, Jennifer Uren coaches and encourages mompreneurs to find the right systems, tools, and people – their “Mom Team” – so they have the support and energy to be their best as both “mom” and “entrepreneur”.

  1. How do we know we need a Mom Team?We need a Mom Team all the time. But, we often confuse need with effectiveness. When things are going well, we believe that we are managing just fine. But when things are going a bit sidewise, we are often too overwhelmed to put into place the systems, tools and processes we need to create the best team.
So, we need to build our team as we go.
The Best Mom team consists of systems, tools and people, most often a combination of all three, put together when things seem to be going well.
Mom Team – Most things that we are doing require both:
System- the process repeatable recordable; like a recipe- allows us to delegate.
Tool- the specifics we use to work the system.
To create the best team, you need to spend some time observing yourself ,your rhythms and routines; what works best for you. You want to take yourself out of the equation- often Mom’s feel like they have to do it all and that creates a bottleneck. Take time to analyze how you think, how you function, what tools work best for you, what processes do you need to put into place.
  2. How do we sort through the myriad of systems to create the best team?
    1. Start with what we know- do research and make a choice.
    2. Once the choice is made, put blinders on and lean into what you have – don’t submit to the shiny object syndrome.
    3. All systems have a learning curve- commit to learning the system and realize that friction (i.e. frustration) might be part of the process).
  3. Are there any good, “Start here” systems to begin with as we build our team1. 1. Home- meet our basic needs 1. Meals- Planning, Shopping, Cooking, Clean-up, Storing 2. Laundry- gateway to all things clean in our home 3. Paper -Bills paid, events planned, activities prepped for

    1. Business/ Homeschool- create space for meaningful work
      1. Workspace – is it virtual, portable, permanent
      2. Email- the heart of communication and represents need, implementation and response.
      3. Time- rhythms and routines around tasks- creating space adn protecting that space to get everything done

To create an effective Mom Team we have to get out of the mindset that we have to be the ones who do it all. We have to quit creating the bottleneck. If we delegate and off-load we can have the energy that we need to do things that we are called to do. Who can trade, barter and pay for others to join our team.

While it can be hard to ask for help, it’s hard to receive help when we receive.

Keep in mind that you can’t do everything, but you can do many things, just not everything at once!

About Jenn: Jenn Uren is very familiar with trying to juggle and do all the things herself but too often found that it was at the expense of her family, especially relationship with her kids. She hit a breaking point five years ago when she and her husband experienced a surprise adoption of a sibling set (100% unexpected – you can hear about it on her podcast). This started her down a life-giving path of transformation as she learned how to ask for help, offer help, and lean into systems to simplify and create space in her own life – and she wants to help you do that, too. Because the good news is that you can do it all, just not by yourself.

She and her family have recently left the hustle and bustle of the Chicagoland area and are enjoying discovering their new hometown in Northwest Indiana.

Why a Morning BasketPam Barnhill joins me on today’s podcast to talk about how to manage your life while homeschooling

Pam, Jamie Martin and Colleen Kessler have all joined forces to create a program called, Homeschooling with Purpose

  1. Cast a vision
  2. Calm the chaos
  3. Create a lifestyle of learning in your home

Which is great, because it gives homeschoolers the tools they need to manage all of their lives, not just the educational piece. Like Pam says, manage the laundry- it’s never a surprise.

Pam and Why a Morning BasketPam is also probably best known for Your Morning Basket. Pam draws a distinction between Unit Studies and Morning Baskets and says Morning Baskets are when they cover everything from memory work to Internet Safety and are distinctly different than a unit study.

Some of the Barnhill’s favorite Morning baskets have focused on the Election, Finance and Folk Songs.

Pam uses a Trello Board to manage their Morning Baskets.

Pam is also a big proponent of Memory work, and learning memory work by songs and hymns.

Tools for Struggling Learners – Part 1Today we are talking with Cindy LaJoy. You might remember Cindy from a previous episode where we talked about the Soft Skills of Work Ethic. Cindy spent the pandemic busy as ever, learning many new videography skills, working on a graduate degree and co-authoring a book. Along with Natalie Vecchio, Blazing New Homeschool Trails: Educating and launching Teens with Developmental Disabilities

Cindy and her husband have adopted 5 kids, now young adults from Eastern Europe and has a fantastic story of hope for other Moms homeschooling non-traditional learners. Her five kids, some of whom were adopted as older children who did not speak English and were illiterate have over 25 diagnosis between them and yet, as young adults, they have gone on to college, entrepreneurship, owning an award winning business and hiring other developmentally challenged adults. Cindy is also the amazing homeschooling Momma behind Blue Collar Homeschooling and the Facebook page and group Blue Collar Homeschooling.

Cindy has spent the last decade and a half searching out appropriate curriculum, therapies and realistic opportunities for her non-traditional students, as well as helping them develop realistic life skills that have allowed them not only to manage and cope but thrive and become leaders in their own right.

She and her family make their home in Colorado. If you are in the Montrose, Colorado area, stop by their “Best in the Valley” shop, Buckaroos Slices and Scoops, for great pizza, ice-cream, and customer service!

In this episode and the next, we’ll take a look at what’s available for those who are homeschooling non-traditional learners.

Rethinking CollegeWelcome to this episode of Life Skills 101! This week the topic of this podcast is Rethinking College.

With the rising cost of college, it’s important for parents to take time to evaluate with their students, the academic, financial and world view Return on their Investment (ROI) of college costs and debt. The average college graduate (does not include students who do not graduate but still have debt), takes 6 years, not 4 to graduate, with an average of over $35,000 in debt

A college degree is no longer necessary for a rewarding career or to ensure an upwardly mobile life-style. In fact, crippling college debt can make the American Dream an impossibility!

As parents, how do we guide and direct our young adults as they plan for the future?

In this episode, we explore ways that students can get a head start on college, by starting by taking CLEP or Dual Enrollment courses, specifically targeting Gen Ed Courses.

General Education Requirements:* + 6 credits of English. + 3-6 of Math + 3-9 of Science + 3-6 of Social Science + 3-6 of Diversity + You can get an associate’s or even a bachelor’s from the Big Three of the CLEP world. These are - Thomas Edison - Excelsior - Charter Oaks

It makes good sense for young adults to learn how to navigate the digital world. Starting an online business in high school can set them up for future success; setting up an online educational business is even better as the online education market is estimated to be an over $350 billion dollar market by 2025.

Students should consider what kind of lifestyle do they want to have as adults and work backwards from there. What kind of training, income and skills will they need to attain that? The future will demand that our young adults have Critical Thinking Skills, Adaptability and Flexibility and the ability to Collaborate.

Below are resources offered by True North to help families navigate the rapidly changing world of college.

David brings 22 years of understanding with him as he has been working in Jewish-Christian Relations in various capacities for years. This program includes beautiful videos, podcasts, text, and an in-depth study guide to allow your student to dive deeply into a beautiful understanding of God’s invitation to celebrate the Sabbath with him. Learning Styles & Online EducationLearning Styles are as much a part of the Homeschooling Parents’ vocabulary as Ticonderoga Pencils and the jokes about denim jumpers. We love them and embrace them for a good reason. They help us understand our kids better and make homeschooling much more enjoyable.

The best way to use learning styles is to be aware of who tends towards which style and then offer up a variety of ways to learn, assess and review the lesson.

There are 4 Major Learning Styles1. Reading & Writing 2. Visual 3. Auditory 4. Kinesthetic

Online Education

2020 brought to the fore online learning. It seems that the entire world went from a vague understanding of what online learning could be to jumping in with both feet- whether they liked it or not.

In the midst of this, seasoned online academies, like True North Homeschool Academy, continued to offer dynamic and interactive small-group classes that inspired students to learn, grow and develop. What was the difference between the awful virtual schools and online academies like True North Homeschool Academy?

Years of online teaching and learning experience, intentionality, and the SAMR Model.

The SAMR Model

The SAMR Hierarchy of Online Education was developed by a Harvard-trained Biologist, which makes sense, as Scientists are great at classifying information. And this Model is super helpful in understanding the various “types’ ‘ of online education. There are four aspects of this model. The first two are enhancement, and the last two are transformative.

The SAMR Model Explained

  1. Substitution – Technology acts as a direct substitute with no functional change.
  2. Augmentation – Technology acts as a direct substitute for functional improvement.
  3. Modification – Technology allows for direct task redesign, particularly when it comes to group projects.
  4. Reimagination – Technology allows for the creation of new tasks previously inconceivable.

Understanding the SAMR Model when purchasing online classes and investing in an online program is an important step in knowing if you are getting the programs that will engage and encourage active learning or is designed to be a passive experience.

Where do Learning Styles and the SAMR Model Meet?

Knowing our kids’ preferred learning method can help us make the best choices when it comes to online educational options, allowing us to evaluate options systematically and allocate resources strategically.

What to look for in online learning based on Learning Style

Read/ Write Students

These students learn best by reading and writing and can do well with many different kinds of online learning programs, pre-recorded and live.

What to Avoid: Be aware of online programs or teachers who talk really fast or don’t have time for the student to ask questions and clarify information for their notes.

Visual Learners

These students learn by watching so online classes that are visually well organized are going to really appeal to this type of learning.

What to Avoid: Online classes where the teacher simply lectures, with no visual graphics or virtual classroom with extension activities.

Auditory Learners

The auditory learner does great when there is a high level of auditory engagement in the online learning environment.

What to avoid: Online classes with a lot of music or noise but do not include content, the majority of the class contains visuals, and the students do not have a chance to ask questions or interact verbally with the teacher and fellow students.

Kinesthetic Learners

These types of learners prefer engaging, hands-on, project-based learning.

What to avoid: Online classes where students sit and passively listen or watch/

Once again, Learning Styles are a handy tool for homeschooling parents as we evaluate new tech and its uses in our homeschool. The SAMR Model, too, is a useful tool for evaluation as we consider the many online opportunities with the explosion of online learning materials! Understanding both models allows us to be savvy and discriminating consumers and strategize the best homeschooling program for our family!

Choose to HomeschoolToday, Lisa Nehring, True North Homeschool Academy Director, sits down with one of her adult kids who was entirely homeschooled, Kendra Nehring, and her husband, who was public schooled, to talk about their decision to homeschool their kids.

Tony went entirely through the public school system and won a national award, including a full-ride vo-tech scholarship through the “SkillsUSA” program. While it might look like this is a win for public schools, Tony describes this as more of his will to overcome. As a high-energy person, he was put on Ritalin at age 4. He was bullied due to a speech impediment. He also went to some very rough schools that he felt got in the way of actual learning.

Why Choose to Homeschool?Homeschooling allows the parent to

  1. Customize the students’ education.
  2. Control the influence of bullying.
  3. Allow kids’ attention spans to develop naturally and to focus on areas of interest. High-energy kids get the breaks that they need.
  4. Parents get to learn right alongside the kids.
  5. Homeschooling allows you to work harder for your kids because you are taking the intentional route.
  6. Develops an awesome connection to and with your kids as you live and work alongside each other!
  7. You get to see kids grow up in real time. Public school kids can be gone from home for up to 10-12 hours a day, with the school day, travel time, and extracurricular activities.
  8. You get to develop amazing communication habits and skills in your kids. People don’t know how to talk anymore, and homeschooling allows you to interact face-to-face without distractions.
  9. There is a growing stigma against kids in society. Homeschooling allows you to nurture and protect your kids as they grow and develop and witness to others as you include your kids in your activities and outings.
  10. You get to learn and grow together! Taking field trips and visiting historic sites and science museums together develops everyone’s love of learning- you develop a lifestyle of learning together!

Tony & Kendra’s advice to others who choose to homeschool are:

  1. Give yourself Grace- don’t be hard on yourself as you figure out homeschooling for your family.
  2. Don’t overcomplicate things. You can go at the pace that suits you and your kids.
  3. Follow the Bunny Trails – they can take you on lifelong adventures!

Homeschooling Through TragedyOn this episode, Lisa Nehring talks with one of her adult kids, Kendra Vittioe, about a life-threatening accident Kendra lived through.

When Kendra was 14, she, her siblings, and a friend were in an accident where the minivan they were riding in was t-boned by a truck. Kendra survived a frontal lob head injury that could have killed her. A piece of her skull was removed, and the neurosurgeons literally had to vacuum pieces of glass from her brain.

This was a “near miss” tragedy, as Kendra and everyone else involved walked away from the accident with physical injuries that healed.

Have 13:5 & 6: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”

Jer 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Our animals- a horse and a dog at the time- helped Kendra regain her confidence.

Having “green therapy- the ability to just go outside and take long walks.

Parents being aware of the anxiety- or trauma response- to certain stimuli and remind their kids to breathe and that it will be alright.

Being aware of what the kids can and not do- keeping in touch with them so that parents aren’t going “too easy” or “too hard” on them.

Kendra and her husband Tony are homeschooling their own children. You can find Kendra blogging at Life’s a Journey and on Pinterest.

The Time has come for Conservatives to Become Politically Active!

True North Homeschool Academy Director Lisa Nehring is joined by one Adam Pruzan. Adam has worked at high levels of public policy and has read every Senate brief since the 80’s. He currently works as a consultant and investment manager and teachers at True North Homeschool Academy

Today, we take a brief look at history and how it informs the political situation of today, and what a reasoned response might look like.

In the Roman Republic the strong middle class gave way to a ruling empire. The strong middle class is what made Rome strong and kept it a Republic. Once the middle class dissipated, Roman became an Empire.

In the 1850’s the south went to war to protect its feudal aristocracy.

The mid 1950’s was the zenith of the middle class in America. But the 1970’s- 1990’s America found two sources of cheap labor.

  1. Illegal immigrants – mostly from Mexico
  2. China

Both of whom worked for below market value. This has gutted the middle class and empowered the wealthy. The Globalists have become a class of Lords and knights.

Aristotle points out that the middle class is the most stable and a good regime because of its moral virtue.

We should look to Brazil- the presidential election was won by a leftist candidate, a convicted felon, while the popular, loved President has been ousted.

What will stem the tide of liberal globalism? We have 3 choices.

  1. Simply surrender.
  2. Political activism**
  3. Become Slaves

** such as exhibited during the Civil Rights movement under Dr. MLK.

Under the democrats, the intellect is dead.

Tis the season to take stock of the year before, dream about the year ahead and realize maybe you’re a bit off track in some areas. It’s a time when we realize some seasons are over and new ones are about to begin.

It’s no different in homeschooling. It’s seasonal. And what may have worked last year, last month or even last week, just might not work for now or for what’s ahead.

Join True North Homeschool Academy Director, Lisa Nehring as she talks about when it might be a good time to pivot, how to pivot and gives you some pro-tips on pivoting, based on her 30 years of homeschooling experience.

So, we learned to do the homeschool Pivot. Pivoting means to shift to a new strategy.

Pivoting can mean big, overarching changes, or small micro changes. It can apply to one kid, or one subject or everybody.

Goldilocks Principle

your mission

You can switch up science and keep math, or move to a dynamic online writing

Adding in a fun, mid-year class, like Entrepreneurship can supercharge your entire semester- and who knows, it might literally change your students life!

Make time for life skills, if you haven’t already and spend time cleaning, doing laundry, shopping, budgeting or gardening together.

Bring in an expert for additional learning and support. Having your kids learn from a Ph.D in Science or a native, fluent Spanish teacher can change things from ho-hum to shazam!

True North’s Academic Advising and Performance Series test can help you know where you’re starting from and give you a clear, actionable and affordable plan moving forward.

It’s a New Year and that’s always exciting. And as we begin it, I want to give you permission- if you feel like you need it- to pivot!

In a recent article, titled, “The College Essay is Dead,” the writer questions whether writing instruction will weather the onslaught of AI. AI is “writing” many things these days, from ads to news articles, so it’s not surprising that the time-honored essay will soon be under fire.

True North Homeschool Academy director, Lisa Nehring is joined by one of True North’s world class Lit and Comp Teachers, Anna Knaub to talk about AI and Essay Writing!

Both Anna and Lisa Agree that the Essay will always be a skill that wise parents will choose to teach their kids for the following reasons:

  1. Good writing is good thinking and learning how to write well teaches kids how to think well, organize their thoughts, make a linear argument, understand thesis, counter thesis, and antithesis and present from a point of strong personal conviction.
  2. Language substantiates intelligent design and as people of faith, we want to best utilize the gifts we are given in response to being created Imago Dei.
  3. Using AI to write begs the question of plagiarism and its cousin academic citation. There is a fundamental difference between using writing tools and using tools to create content that a person takes ownership of. Learning to write and write well disciplines students to sit with their thoughts and to do hard things.

While AI is making advances in so many industries, we both firmly believe that teaching your students to write an essay well develops so many skills in your students, that go well beyond the essay, that it’s vitally important that we continue to teach it!

Anna Knaub will be teaching Summer Classes 23 : 1984 & Hamlet

Fall 23- 24 Classes: Shakespeare, Dystopian Lit and Comp, Austen & Bronte.

Fluency In Foreign LanguageTrue North Homeschool Academy Director Lisa Nehring is joined by one of True North’s Spanish Instructors, Cat Garcia, as we talk about what it takes to gain fluency in a 2nd language in high school.

  1. Immersion. By far, the fastest and most effective way to gain fluency in a 2nd language is to go where the language is spoken and then determine to only interact in that language.
    1. Small local communities
    2. Books on tapes
    3. Kids movies
    4. Commercials
    5. Listening to the Bible on audio
  2. Making goals and sticking to them-
    1. Finding a solid curriculum
    2. Being intentional about the pronunciation
    3. Fluent teachers -online or in person- cannot emphasize this enough!
    4. Spending time engaging with the material
    5. Spending time memorizing the vocabulary and forms
    6. Doubling up on a class and a club, as we offer at True North Homeschool Academy

It IS possible to become fluent in a foreign language while in High School, but it takes time, intention and the right tools.

Please, no matter how we advance technologically, please don’t abandon the book. There is nothing in our material world more beautiful than the book.” ― Patti Smith

Tech is here to stay, and it is such a useful tool! But it can also be difficult to balance tech usage with other academic options. Listen in as True North Homeschool Academy Teacher, Angie Ferrell chats with TNHA Director, Lisa Nehring about finding balance between amazing technology and solid academic pedagogy and tools!

We talk about the SAMR Hierarchy of online learning (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Reimaging) and how important the usage of this hierarchy is when evaluating online classes and learning. Not all e-learning is created equal, as the world discovered in 2020!

It’s also important to understand Tech Stacking and giving our kids actual technological tools to use. For example, Angie always has her class watch “Death by Powerpoint” before any presentations are due How to avoid death By PowerPoint | David JP Phillips | TEDxStockholmSalon – YouTube

Angie’s recommendations for Tech Balance in your homeschool is

  1. Make sure your kids are learning the correct tech skills. Most kids know a certain gaming system, but few understand word docs or excel spreadsheets, powerpoint or a graphic design program, like Canva.
  2. Create whitespace for your kids – unplanned time during every day that often includes “Green Therapy ” (getting outside/ being in nature).
  3. Put the phone away nightly, or weekly- include Tech Detox’s as a regular part of your routine and habits. Constant dopamine hits stress the brain and interfere with sleep.
