On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee and the Department of Anesthesiology at CHU Sainte-Justine, it is my great pleasure to invite you to Montreal for the Canadian Pediatric Anesthesia Society (CPAS) 2026 Scientific Meeting, taking place September 25–27, 2026.
We’ve built this meeting around the reality of what we do daily. Expect practical, case-based discussions, focused panels, and hands-on workshops that you can bring straight back to your OR the following week. We’re bringing together outstanding Canadian and international colleagues but keeping the tone grounded and clinically relevant.
The program will cover areas we all grapple with, including neonatal emergencies, difficult airways, pediatric neuroanesthesia, brain health, and evolving approaches to pain. We’ll also take a step back and look at where things are going, including AI, digital tools, and simulation, and what that really means for our practice.
Each full registration includes two workshops. You’ll be able to choose between Pediatric POCUS, Pediatric Hypnosis, and Innovative Pediatric Blocks, all designed to be practical and interactive.
The scientific sessions will take place at the Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). Our conference hotel, the Hyatt Centric Montréal, is just a short walk away in Old Montreal, close to great restaurants, the waterfront, and everything that makes the city special.
September is one of the best times to be in Montreal. The weather is perfect, the city is lively, and it’s an easy place to enjoy between sessions. We’re also planning a social program that gives you time to actually connect, catch up with colleagues, and meet new people in a relaxed setting.

Over the past year, I have completed an intensive fellowship in paediatric anaesthesia and critical care that has significantly strengthened my clinical expertise, professional confidence, and academic direction. This period of training has been transformative, equipping me with advanced skills in the care of critically ill neonates and children while broadening my exposure to complex surgical and critical care environments.
A major achievement was the development of strong competencies in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and cardiac critical care. I gained hands-on experience in the perioperative management of children with congenital and to a smaller extent acquired heart disease, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anaesthetic management, and postoperative critical care. This training enhanced my understanding of paediatric cardiac physiology, haemodynamic monitoring, and the tailored use of vasoactive medications.
My critical care training progressed significantly, particularly in managing postoperative cardiac patients, neonates, and children requiring advanced organ support. I became more confident in ventilator strategies, haemodynamic optimisation, sedation practices, and multidisciplinary decision-making within the paediatric intensive care unit. Exposure to complex cases sharpened my ability to recognise early deterioration and intervene promptly.
Throughout the year, I substantially improved my ultrasound skills, particularly in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). This included ultrasound-guided vascular access, focused cardiac ultrasound, lung ultrasound and regional anaesthesia. These skills have become integral to my clinical practice, improving patient safety and diagnostics in both anaesthesia and critical care settings.
I also developed a strong understanding of the use of processed electroencephalography (EEG) in paediatric anaesthesia, appreciating its role in guiding depth of anaesthesia, reducing the risk of intraoperative awareness and burst suppression, and optimising anaesthetic dosing in neonates and children. This knowledge has strengthened my approach to neuroprotection and individualised anaesthetic care.
Another key achievement was extensive exposure to anaesthesia for neonatal emergencies, including emergency surgeries in fragile neonates with limited physiological reserve. Managing these cases enhanced my skills in rapid assessment, thermoregulation, airway management, fluid and blood product administration, and communication.
In addition, I gained valuable experience in anaesthesia for organ transplant procedures, participating in the perioperative care of children undergoing complex transplant surgeries and organ procurement procedures: liver and renal transplant surgeries. This broadened my understanding of multi-organ physiology, immunosuppression, massive transfusion strategies, and the coordination required within large multidisciplinary teams.
Beyond clinical skills, the fellowship facilitated meaningful professional networking and academic growth. I established a strong connection with the director of VAST (Vital Anaesthesia Simulation Training), which has evolved into an ongoing collaboration. We are now actively working together to develop and deliver simulation-based training scenarios in neurosurgery, reflecting my growing interest in medical education, simulation design, and faculty development.
In conclusion, the one-year paediatric anaesthesia and critical care training has been a period of substantial achievement and growth. It has strengthened my clinical competence, expanded my subspecialty expertise, and opened new pathways in education and simulation. The skills, knowledge, and professional relationships developed during this fellowship will have a lasting impact on my practice and my contribution to paediatric anaesthesia and critical care, particularly in resource-limited settings.

The first CPAS Scientific Research Starter Grant is intended to advance the field of pediatric anesthesia by supporting a Canadian anesthesiologist investigator. This two-year grant provides starter funding to further scientific inquiry and clinical knowledge in the field of pediatric anesthesiology. Preference will be given to junior or mid-career faculty who will be advised by an experienced mentor(s). It is anticipated that the funded study will generate results that can be used as pilot data or preliminary findings to support future grant applications focused on methods to improve safety and promote outcomes in pediatric anesthesia. It is expected that all applicants will be members of CPAS and will recognize CPAS support in future presentations and publications.

Travel GrantThe Department of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine at SickKids in Toronto has generously offered to sponsor two travel fellowships of $1000 CAD each for the 2024 CPAS Meeting in the name of the women anesthesiologists at SickKids. The award aims to promote excitement and interest in speciality pediatric anesthesia training and practice in Canada.
Interested applicants can apply by email to the CPAS President (jonathan.gamble@saskhealthauthority.ca). The application must include the applicant’s CV and a short (300 word) description of why they are considering a career in pediatric anesthesia. Awards will favour those applicants in Canadian post-graduate anesthesiology training, and those submitting a scientific abstract.

We're excited to announce the 2022 CPAS Scientific Meeting will be held in Vancouver on September 16 - 18.
Registration for our scientific program has been an overwhelming success and we have had to change the format to accomodate.
It is with great pleasure that I write this note to you all, almost a year since I assumed the role of CPAS President.
The CPAS Board would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Dr. Nan Gai (Sickkids) for her contribution as Chair of the CPAS Telemedicine Rounds.
In October 2020, CPAS represented members interests in responding to a scientific publication in JAMA pediatrics.
Please join us on November 6, 2021 at 2 p.m. EST for the CPAS AGM meeting. Our theme this year is Looking toward 2022 for Anesthesia.
In June 2021, CPAS presented the pediatric content at the Annual Canadian Anesthesiology Society (CAS) meeting.
Dr. Calvin Lo and Dr. Kimmo Murto presented to Problem- Based Learning Discussion (PBLD) session titled “Avoiding the Pitfalls Associated with Anesthesia for Tonsillectomy Surgery”. Dr. Conor McDonell (with Moderator Dr. Jonathon Gamble) presented the latest evidence on respiratory tract infections in children presenting for anesthesia. All presentations were well received with extremely positive feedback.
Congratulations to Dr. Allyson Farran (Alberta Children’s Hospital) for her poster presentation on the use of Erector Spinae plane blocks for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Surgery.
