I had to hear about this book from 5 different people before I started reading it… and trust me, it was worth it! Luckily, my friend and fellow math coach, Tom Redmon, was persistent, and finally convinced me to pick it up. He wasn’t wrong – Building Thinking Classrooms by Peter Liljedahl is SO GOOD! I can’t say enough positive things about it. Seriously. In this episode, Tom and I share our biggest takeaways and discuss why the book had such an impact on us. If you’re looking for a simple way to engage students during math class so THEY are the ones doing the thinking (instead of you), then do yourself a favor and make Building Thinking Classrooms your next read.

When was the last time you looked at your pacing guide? Did your stomach drop when you saw where you were “supposed” to be – and then compared that to where you actually ARE? I know, I know. You’ve been heads down teaching your students, taking it one day at a time, and moving on to the next lesson only when your students were ready. But as the end of the year draws closer, it’s becoming harder and harder to ignore the fact that you’re running out of time. You’re coming to terms with the reality that if you continue at this pace, there’s NO WAY you’re going to finish. So what should you do now? Follow the 5-Step Process outlined in this episode to catch up on pacing and get back on track.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to witness school improvement efforts in schools and districts across our country. Some have led to improved instructional practices and student growth, while others have made little (or no) impact. In this episode I’m sharing three common initiatives that by and large do NOT move the needle with student achievement (or teacher effectiveness) – and three that absolutely DO. Be forewarned… I’m not mincing words in this episode! Instead, I’m sharing my unfiltered viewpoint, based on 20 years working in math education.

Did you know that between 40% and 50% of teachers leave the classroom within their first 5 years? Is this inevitable, or is there a way to prevent teacher burnout? Tim Schwarz, founder of Sustain Teachers, helps both teachers and leaders find the answer to the question, “What would it look like and feel like to work at your school in the exact role you have now but not feel stressed and tired?” You don’t need to quit teaching or work 60+ hours a week to be an effective educator and serve your students whole-heartedly. This episode is perfect if you are a: (1) leader who wants to prioritize educator wellness and stop having a revolving door of teachers at your school, or (2) teacher who is ready to set strong boundaries in order to thrive while juggling your myriad responsibilities.

Ever wish your students were better problem solvers? My guests on this episode of podcast, Jon Orr and Kyle Pearce, wanted the same thing for their own math students. They realized their current instructional practices were preventing students from becoming more resilient problem solvers, so they made a significant change to their teaching methods. When they decided to stop spoon-feeding math to their students, and (instead) to focus on designing lessons that spark curiosity and fuel sense-making – everything changed. Now their students have “math epiphanies” on the regular, and they create opportunities for every student’s voice to be heard, and valued, in math class. Listen in to hear the three essential components needed to make math moments that matter in YOUR math classroom.

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to partner with Astrid Fossum, Senior Math Specialist at Student Achievement Partners, on a topic we’re both passionate about -- catching kids up in math. We were motivated to help middle and high school math teachers find practical and effective solutions to a challenge they face every day in the classroom: what to do when students have significant unfinished learning from previous grades. Based on our individual experiences, conversations with math teachers, and countless classroom observations, we knew teachers and leaders were seeking guidance about best-practices related to math interventions. Listen in to hear common missteps schools make, recommendations for what to do instead, and examples to help shed light on the complex decision-making process teachers must go through to support students where they are while moving forward with grade-level content. If someone asked what math you teach in your grade, what would you say? Would you give a long-winded list of topics that all seem equally important -- or do you clearly see through to the heart of your students’ learning? In this episode, math content expert, Becca Varon, explains how understanding the major work of your grade enables you to teach math with meaning -- no matter how compressed your timeframe. Listen to learn why it’s OK to let some topics go this year -- and to come away equipped with the resources to make smart decisions as you prioritize. Did you know that many of the things we’ve been taught to value and to strive for are actually harming us? Not only that, but they are harming students, too? As a culture, we’ve been taught that certain ways of being are the ideal - that they are the things we must embody to be successful, to fit in, or to stay safe. However, the truth is that what we think is “normal” is actually white supremacy culture. In this episode, my guest, Adrienne Williams, shares what white supremacy culture is, why it’s something worth talking about, and how it commonly shows up in schools. Additionally, you’ll hear how it’s harmful to you, your colleagues, and your students AND three questions you can ask to begin interrogating white supremacy culture at your school. What can you do when you have too much on your plate, work is stressing you out, or your overall job satisfaction is low? Maybe the planning template for your math lessons is WAY too long or the requirements for student work analysis feels like busy work. Beyond complaining to a friend or fellow educator (which may help you feel better in the short term, but doesn’t actually change your reality), how can you take action to create a situation that is manageable? In this episode of The Mindful Math Podcast, Marissa Geist shares how ‘managing up’ can open the lines of communication, help you reset expectations with your boss, and own your own destiny at work. Whether you report to an instructional coach, assistant principal or principal, or superintendent, this skill will help you advocate for what you need in order to achieve greater work-life balance. There is an art to building relationships with students, and it’s not a one-size-fits-all situation. Maybe you’re like me and my guest, Ryan Colon, who became math teachers because of our love for the content (and not as much for the warm-and-fuzzy stuff). Ryan’s goal was to radically change her students’ mindsets around what math means to them, and she shares ways she built relationships with her students THROUGH the math content. The root of the word RELATIONSHIP is RELATE, so regardless of how you make it happen, the most important thing is to find ways to authentically relate with your students. It’s possible to connect in ways that suit both you and your students, and as a result, begin to see each other as multi-dimensional. When I ask math teachers to share their vision for strong and equitable math instruction in their classrooms, the answers are very consistent. They want to provide opportunities for students to problem solve, think critically about math, and engage in discussion and discourse. However, when I observe math classes, rarely do I see these practices in action. So what is it that gets in the way of teachers realizing their vision? It’s the fact that so many students have unfinished learning from previous grade levels, and the ways in which teachers try to address it DOES NOT align to their vision. But what can be done? Listen in to hear a simple strategy you can use to create a bridge to grade-level math to help all students access the learning. Are you worried your math lessons are dull or dry? Just this week, I was engaged in conversations online about the topic of boring lessons. And while I do NOT believe it’s a teachers’ job to entertain students, it is true that if students are bored, they are more likely to check out, and if they’re checked out, they’re likely NOT taking away much learning from the lesson. So then really, what’s the point? This is exactly the reason I’m excited for you to listen in to my conversation with Tamala Wiley, a former math teacher and instructional coach with 20 years of experience in the field of math education. One of the most common questions we hear in math classrooms is, “What Should I Do First?” Whether teachers have handed out a worksheet, projected a problem using a smart board or document camera, or pointed students to a problem in their textbook, the first question many math teachers ask is: “What Should I Do First?” Why is this a concern? Why am I dedicating an entire episode to helping teachers move away from this go-to phrase? It is possible to create a strong community of learners even if you are teaching in a remote setting, but it DOES take intentionality. The good news is that a little effort can go a long way, so you don’t need to turn yourself inside out or spend hours coming up with virtual ice breakers to form trusting relationships with and between students. With over five years of experience working in a remote setting, I’ve learned a thing or two about how to connect with others, even if you can’t be face to face. Based on my experiences, in this episode I’m sharing three simple, effective practices you can integrate into your lessons to create a strong math community that will support deep learning of mathematics. There is much research suggesting that our emotional competencies predict future career success, and we already know the key role it plays in personal relationships. As a result, social emotional learning (SEL) has become an important area for students to develop in school as well as at home. As schools take on more and more of this responsibility, it’s imperative that educators themselves have the opportunity to grow in self awareness and self compassion to be ready to support students in their personal development. Listen in to this episode to hear how Dr. Angela Brooks supported her staff around adult SEL, including the actions she took as a school leader to help staff communicate and navigate conflict with compassion. She also shares the key role that compassion, achievement, and hope play in school transformation, staff culture, and student success. Relationship building is the gatekeeper you need to reach students academically, make long-lasting impact in their lives, and help them move mountains. Educator, speaker, and author, Andrea “Fitz” Fitzgerald knows this. A self-described “efficacy-builder,” Fitz focuses her work on helping students, teachers, and leaders to conquer their challenges and prove to themselves that they CAN do hard things when they put their mind to it, which opens opportunities to them in the future.
However, Fitz hasn’t always understood the importance of empowering students to believe in themselves. In her first few years as a math teacher, Fitz discovered the hard way that teaching is about more than just the math. Her retelling of two key moments are not only humorous and heart-warming, but will inspire you to prioritize this ‘softer side’ of education. The language we use contributes to the results we have and the outcomes we see. While teaching students with unfinished learning, it’s even more important to be strengths-based and solution-focused. If you want to bring out the best in your students, build their confidence in math, and help them achieve their highest potential, it starts with the language you use. Asset-based language empowers students while deficit-based thinking reveals limiting beliefs and low expectations. Both can lead to inequitable teaching practices which increases the opportunity gap. In this episode, l share 12 phrases in need of an asset-based language makeover to help you catch and replace deficit thinking you may have related to math teaching and learning. For more information, and to access a chart showing deficit-language vs. asset-based language, go to www.mindfulmathcoach.com/episode11.

So what does whole group instruction have that small group and personalized computer programs don’t have? How can you possibly meet the needs of all of your students in a whole group lesson? Hit play now because on this episode of The Mindful Math Podcast I’m answering BOTH of these questions. I also reveal the simple lesson structure you can use to increase students’ confidence and engagement, save YOU stress and time, and lead to deeper, more joyful learning in your math class.
By the end of this episode, you’ll understand how THIS form of whole group learning can help you reach every learner where they are while increasing access to grade-level content. Bold claim: It’s even better than other approaches to differentiate instruction such as leveled small groups and adaptive computer programs. Despite its popularity, there is no compelling evidence to show that personalized learning is improving learning experiences and outcomes for students. Yet, more and more schools are looking to this approach as a way to differentiate instruction, address unfinished learning, and compensate for learning loss in math. What started out as an ideal vision is falling short, especially due to the way many schools implement personalized learning, described by one expert as “computerized customization” most of the time..
In this episode, I’m sharing the top 10 reasons I think the pendulum has swung WAY too far in the direction of this popular trend. Specifically, I’m shining a light on the ineffective use of two specific strategies: small group instruction and use of technology as a way to personalize learning for students. Both approaches can have negative repercussions for teachers and students which is why I caution against jumping on the personalized learning bandwagon - at least not with both feet. The most common concern I hear from middle and high school math teachers is how to support students who have unfinished learning from previous grades. In the face of rigorous grade-level content, this is a valid question -- and one without a silver bullet solution. When should teachers revisit previous grade-level content, and for how long? When should they push ahead?
In this episode, I’m sharing three takeaways from my time supporting teachers and leaders to increase access to grade-level math, including two questions you can ask yourself as you plan your strategy. Wouldn’t it be nice to multiply the impact of your effort? You can do just that by taking time at the beginning of the school year to create a positive community with your students. It takes a small amount of time upfront and yields a big payoff over the course of the school year. There is urgency to close the opportunity gap and to support all students in mastering grade level math content, and it may seem counterintuitive to take time away from academics to focus on culture. It’s natural to feel pressure to get right down to business and start drilling content when school starts, and that pressure will be even higher this coming school year. However, there ARE compelling reasons to ‘go slow to go fast’ and to take time to build relationships with and between students. Creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment before jumping into content yields a huge return on investment. In this episode, I’m sharing the top 3 benefits you’ll receive when you prioritize community building in your classroom, especially at the beginning of the year. Systemic oppression and institutional racism against black, indigenous, and people of color has existed in the United States for more than 400 years. The recent killings of innocent black lives is yet another reminder of the violence and pain caused by white supremacy culture and police brutality. It’s important that I as a white person am using my voice and privilege to speak up and speak out as an advocate for racial equality in our country and to work to actively dismantle the systems that disproportionately affect people of color.
In this two-part episode, I’m sharing what I’ve learned in recent years that helped me move from ignorance towards antiracism, including mistakes I made that harmed people of color, specifically my students. To my listeners of color, I hope that by sharing my story and information about systemic racism in these two episodes it will take some of the burden placed on you to educate white Americans about racial injustice in our country. To my white listeners, I hope you hear something that changes your perspective, teaches you something new, or inspires you to take action in an even bigger and bolder way than you’ve done before.
Too many priorities = no priorities, which is why I focus on a small list of needle-moving practices in planning, coaching, and math professional learning. The first two are related: understanding and teaching grade-level content and increasing accessibility TO the grade-level content. I arrived at the third factor after years of studying schools that had double digit growth in math -- or higher. Listen in to this episode to hear how I discovered this trio of high-impact practices, get inspired to focus your efforts here, and as a result, watch your students accelerate their learning in math. Teachers are some of the hardest working people in our society. It’s not uncommon for teachers to work upwards of 50, 60, or even 70 hours a week, but at what cost? Not every minute is created equal, and with the strategic use of time it is possible to work fewer hours without sacrificing student learning. You don’t have to choose between taking care of yourself and giving your students what they need. Tune in to this episode to discover the powerful time-saving rule you can use to have it all inside and outside of the classroom. Why do you think math scores in the US are so low, and why are they so slow to change? I've been asking myself these questions for the past two decades at every stage of my education career as I worked to change this reality. Listen in to this episode to hear my thoughts on two missing links in the math improvement chain and what I plan to do about them.
