Today I am speak with Cat Ainsworth and Annie Legge from the Dot Project. Annie and Cat started Dot Project 6 years ago with the purpose of building strength through technology. We explore how Dot Project started, how it grew and how the cooperative principles inform everything that they do. Today Helen and I are talking you through a useful framework you can use to reflect on your year. These are 6 questions to ask about your year as a consultant . You can also use these questions if you are working as an employee but wish to move into consulting as they may give you some ideas about the direction you could go in the future.
This is an episode where you need to find a quiet space, perhaps an hour to yourself. For us this is part of self-care. Make sure you have a pen, paper and something nice to drink. There's a lot of celebrating of yourself in this episode - something frankly we don't do often enough. Something we can forget as we go quickly from one thing to another.
So it's time to put a sign on your door and carve some space, and show yourself some appreciation!

Today I am speaking with Mrids Palat Becker. Mrids is a Mentor and Money-Mindset Coach at Women Ask For More.
Get your notebooks out because, in this bumper conversation, we discuss all things negotiation and money. Mrids helps us understand what we need to consider when we negotiate as consultants. This is such a valuable episode.
We talk about the money mindset, the fear of rejection, and cultural differences around negotiations. Often as consultants, we are so focused on our technical work, that we find the subject of fee rates uncomfortable, and frankly, we’d rather someone else dealt with it. But if you run your own consulting practice this is something you have to become used to and even learn to have a little fun with.

This week, we mix it up a bit and Helen interviews Janet!
Janet has a health background and now works mostly in organizational development and monitoring and evaluation. She started working in international development in 1995 and her experience is based in the NGO and consulting space.
In this conversation, Helen gets in under some of Janet's experience and delves deeper into her consulting journey.
We talk about curiosity and using an iterative approach with clients; how asking questions helps to make the deliverables useful to clients and the important skill of empathy. We reflect on preparing well and the attention we need to pay to details and language. And how it's vital to surround yourself with a supportive network.

Today I am speaking with Irssa Ahuja. Irssa is highly skilled research and gender expert. And so much more! She shares rich examples of her work traveling to rural areas, conflict zones and working with diverse communities on topics such as human rights, women’s empowerment, and conflict resolution.
Irssa shares her passion for this work and how it was a struggle to begin her consulting journey within the constraints of society in her home of Pakistan. In her words - 'someone has to be the first drop of rain'. She helps us understand the dynamics of not being taken seriously as a female consultant; how she has been a pioneer and example for other women from South Asia to start on their consulting journey. Her strongest message is how we need to believe in ourselves and invest in ourselves to ensure we can be the best consultants we can be.

Natalia is a human rights lawyer who decided to use stories instead of legal arguments to make a change. She is a truly inspiring guest who speaks with wisdom and humility about her journey into consulting from academia.
In this conversation we learn how intentional and deliberate Natalia is about choosing clients who align with her own values and founding principles; we discuss how the connection is at the root of almost everything; and what questions we can ask of our clients to help us understand what we really bring to the table as a consultant.

Felicity describes herself as a researcher and advocate.
She has focused on the gender and sexual and reproductive health and rights space for many years and has always had a strong desire to serve in her work. Purpose-driven organisations and institutions are important to her.
In our conversation today we cover how she almost fell into consulting and what it is like working as a consultant alongside studying for a Doctorate in Public Health. We talk about timeline management, the importance of technical depth, and frankly how consulting is definitely not for everyone.
