In this episode Stephanie and Canadian icon Marci Ien discuss her life and career. Being a political nerd, I was particularly interested in her recent career change from journalism to politics. We discuss how she found her voice, her authentic self, and how she is committed to using it. We discuss the changing moments of her career and highlights from encounters with Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder, to making a difference with Raptors basketball. She chooses to lead for others, she inspires me to be a better human and fight for change. I can’t wait for you to dive into our interview!
About Marci:
Marci Ien is a devoted Mother, award-winning Journalist, Author, and Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre who has dedicated her life to providing a voice for those who need it most. Born in St. Jamestown and raised in Toronto, where she lives with her children Blaize and Dash, Marci has seen first hand the opportunities and challenges Toronto faces. Marci is a passionate advocate for vulnerable communities in Canada and around the world.
Today, she serves as the voice of Toronto Centre constituents as the only Black Woman in the House of Commons and continues to fight for inclusion, equality and ensuring that everyone in Toronto Centre and across Canada have a fair chance at success.

Jamie McMillan has been working across Canada as a journeyman ironworker in the construction industry since 2002. In an effort to expand her knowledge and increase her opportunities, she recently began a secondary journey as a boilermaker. Jamie is also the founder of Kick Ass Careers, a grassroots initiative creating awareness to influence those of all ages and walks of life to consider careers in underrepresented occupations through school and community outreach.

Who is Julia Hanigsberg?
Julia Hanigsberg is the President and CEO of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Which is Canada’s largest children’s rehabilitation hospital and a Top 40 research hospital. At Holland Bloorview Julia led the development of the No Boundaries strategy, expanded clinical services, launched the social justice campaign Dear Everybody, and championed an ambitious growth plan for the Bloorview Research Institute. She champions girls and women in STEM as a member of the Executive Advisory Board of FIRSTRobotics Canada and its Girls in STEM Advisory Committee. Julia is a three time Women’s Executive Network (WXN) Top 100 Most Powerful Women award winner and in 2020 was recognized as a Top CEO. Julia has law degrees from McGill University and Columbia University, and recently achieved the Institute of Corporate Directors ICD.D designation.

Who is Karen Hamberg?
Karen Hamberg is a clean technology executive with nearly 20 years of global experience. She is currently Vice President, External Affairs and Sustainability at Westport Fuel Systems in Vancouver and has expertise in corporate strategy, environmental performance, regulatory affairs, sustainability, and external communications. She joined Westport in 2001.
In June 2020, she was appointed to the Government of Canada’s Industry Strategy Council representing the Clean Technology sector and named Chair of the Economic Strategy Table on Clean Technology.
In 2017, Karen was the first non-U.S. resident, the first woman, and the youngest person to be named Chair of the Board of Directors of CALSTART in Pasadena, California, the nation’s larges non-profit, member-driven coalition accelerating the growth of a clean transportation industry. Under her leadership, CALSTART achieved a gender-balanced Board of Directors in May 2020.
Karen is a sight after board member and her leadership is sought by government and industry for her expertise. She is also a volunteer who is very engaged in her community.
