Names are an interesting phenomenon. Every single person has one. People will hold newborn babies, inquire about the name, and remark about what a good name it is, or how fitting it is. Indeed, our names say a lot about us, and as we grow, our names in a great way become a part of our identity. In Isaiah 9:2-7, the prophet proclaimed 4 names (or titles) that adorned Jesus. Why these 4 names? What are their significance – especially during this very special season? And how will they minister to us today?

The Christmas message is so familiar: Virgin Mary, angels and shepherds, Jesus the Savior is born. We run the risk of missing its true meaning. This sermon will tell this same gospel message differently, tracing the Scriptures from the prophecy in Isaiah, its fulfilment in the Gospels, and people’s reactions. To help us examine our own reaction, we will consider the self-deceived Simon The sorcerer in Acts, the self-righteous Pharisees, and conclude with the self-denying apostle Paul in Ephesians 5. The main reframe is this: Jesus has come to be our light; we don’t need to stumble in darkness any longer; if we receive Jesus and live in the light He gives.

What can we do to merit God’s righteousness? How can we grow into a deeper and more alive and transformed relationship with Jesus? In the first part of Philippians 3, Paul encourages everyone to recognize what is treasure and what is not. If we want to go into a deeper relationship with Jesus, a relationship that is alive and transformed by Jesus, we must first recognize what is more important and what is not. We gain Christ when we give up what is not important.

There is treasure in waiting for God, but how do we do it? How do we wait on the Lord? It sounds spiritual and good, but has anyone taught you how to actually do it? Habakkuk shows us how to wait and a reward so wonderful even the most impatient will desire it.

One of the hardest things to do in Dark Days is to wait. We want them to be over as soon as possible and we do everything we can to get past them. But what if there is treasure to be found by waiting in the dark? What would we miss by not waiting?

Some of us have been taught that it is not okay to ask questions of God. Believing that will break us. Others of us are taught to trust our own ability to make sense of things. Believing that results in a lot of fist shaking followed by an angry walk away from God. What if there is a way to wrestle with God faithfully instead?

Are you facing dark days? Are your days full of anxiety, depression, or frustration? Are you wondering if God cares or if He is in control? Is it ok to even ask those questions? Habakkuk had a dialogue with God about these very things long ago and found ancient wisdom that is a modern, relevant message. He found hope for dark days.

It hardly takes a PHD or a prophet to observe that we are living in exceptional times. This pandemic has hit our planet like a tsunami, flooding the world with fear, disrupting literally every facet of life. And we’re going to be observing the real damage of this pandemic as we’re leaving our homes and shelters. The question we have to ask is, how will we rebound in the face of such sweeping effects? Pondering about how it makes one feel weak, frail, discouraged and perhaps even overwhelmed. So the question we need to wrestle through is, from where do we find resilience to be able to move forward?
We're together to be encouraged by God's Word together. Listen to Pastor Dave Harvey, president of Great Commission Collective open God's Word for us on this important subject.

Loved people are always sent. This is a good thing because it means you have purpose…a role to play…significance. He has rescued you from captivity and given you gifts…not toys, but tools to build the church in love. When we measure Christ’s gift it motivates us to purposeful discipleship.

Every believer has the same ability to powerfully and practically proclaim the Word of God to any culture, at any time, any where. Do you believe this? If not, it is time to get clarity about what biblical preaching is and why we are charged to ‘preach the Word’.

What are you passionate about? If you are passionate, you show intense feelings towards it. You may be passionate about a person, a sport team, an object or an injustice. Our passion points to what our heart loves, which means it is a great word to describe how to worship God. Do you know how to passionately worship God?

How do we become fervent in prayer? How do we move from weak, half-hearted prayer to the kind of prayer that we know is right…prayer that is glowing hot with great intensity? The answer doesn’t come in fixing the techniques of prayer, but in clarity about the One to whom we pray. It is then that we are dependent and expectant…fervent in prayer.

Squash in salads, long conversations, and HGTV shows are all things I used to dislike, but now enjoy because they are things my wife loves. As my love for her deepens, I have begun to love things she loves. The same happens as we love Jesus more and more. Do you know what Jesus loves? Abiding in Jesus results in me pursuing the things Jesus loves.
