Summer calls for beers that sustain us through these long sun-filled hours. Light, sessionable ones that we can comfortably enjoy two, three, or even four of throughout the day without sacrificing flavor. Sierra Nevada’s new summer seasonal, a session hazy IPA called Summer Break, does exactly that. Bursting with juiciness, but only hitting 4.6% ABV, the beer made such a splash when it first hit shelves last summer that it’s back in 2022. With Summer Break, Sierra Nevada is yelling C-A-N-N-O-N-B-A-L-L at the top of their lungs.

Meet the Monsters of IPA! In 2019, Rogue released its first hazy IPA called Batsquatch, a fabled creature found in the deep woods near Mount St. Helens. Following this juicy, cloudy, fruit-forward IPA, Rogue launched a second monster in 2021. Colossal Claude, a massive sea monster last seen off the coast of his favorite brewery, has been terrifying sailors and feasting on salmon for years. Now he's turned to hops. This imperial IPA has a colossal dose of Cascade, Chinook, Citra, and Strata. Now, there is a new monster on the scene, the Gumberoo. This West Coast IPA is fashioned after the mythical half bear, half hog last sighted by campers in the Pacific Northwest woods. The piney and protective Gumberoo has a subtle hop aroma and flavors upfront giving way to a light tropical fruit body.

We think it's pretty safe to say that over the years the love for IPAs has grown exponentially. First it was English-style IPAs, then West Coasts, then came session IPAs, and of course the haze craze. You could almost say that we’ve been hypnotized by the magic powers of IPAs. @firestonewalker has created the perfect name for this phenomenon: Hopnosis. And it's not only a new word - but more importantly it's a new IPA! In this week’s episode of Drinking Socially hosts Harrison Hickok and Kyle Roderick say hello to Firestone Walker Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. The six time winner of ""Brew of the Year"" at the Great American Beer Festival and wizard behind Firestone Walker's amazing beers will blow your minds as he chats about West Coast IPAs, new school hops, and Hopnosis.

O’zapft is! O’zapft is! That's been the traditional way Oktoberfest has been kicked off for centuries. Literally meaning "it's been tapped!" But really meaning - it's party time, der bruder!Drinking Socially podcast hosts Harrison Hickok and Jon Dispenza - along with the rest of the world - are bummed that the actual Oktoberfest is cancelled once again this year. But fear not! They’re keeping the spirit of this celebration alive and well with the help of some classic Marzen's and some brand spanking new Untappd badges!

We’re living in the golden age of beer. It’s almost overwhelming deciding which beer to drink next. How can we even make that decision with so many amazing choices? For Drinking Socially podcast host Harrison Hickok he looks at what co-host Jon Dispenza has been drinking on Untappd. Or, he searches his local Verified Venues to see what’s new in town. And now more than ever our local breweries need us! To help celebrate local beer the Brewers Association started the Local Beer Is Better initiative that promotes and supports your independent, neighborhood breweries. Why? Because a local beer keeps local people employed. A local beer gives back to the community. Heck, a local beer creates community right in the taproom where it’s poured. A local beer doesn’t just taste better, it does good.

Porters are more than just, “that other dark beer”. Over the past decade or so craft beer consumers have sprinted down a dark, windy, roasty, path of the stout. From barrel-aged to fruited to breakfast variations to those infused with lactose and cake, stouts have become a darling of modern American craft brewers. But along the way we’ve forgotten that porters are kind of like the OG dark beer! Originating during the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century in London, porters take their name from the London working class that first enjoyed them: boatmen, punters, and porters. After dominating England during the 1700s, the style lost popularity in the early 20th century and faded away until being semi-revived as a style during the rise of craft beer

A very close cousin to an English IPA, ESB was a forerunner catch-all for most early English beers. Ahead of its time, new ESB styles erupted as brewing methods evolved and brewers became more technical. While most still use an English yeast strain to coax out that traditional flavor, you can find American brewers putting their own take on this beer style as well, today.

This week we're drinking Morland Old Speckled Hen from Greene King to unlock the “You’re Extra Special” badge, earned by checking-in to five different beers with the style of Extra Special / Strong Bitter or English Bitter! We also highlight Jackalope Brewing Company - The Ranch in Nashville, TN as our Verified Venue of the Week, and shout out Rotunda Brewing Company and New Anthem Beer Project for crafting the best beers we had this week.

In the case of an IPA, higher hop intensity and extra juiciness are a given. In fact, the style is often attributed to Vinnie Cilurzo, now owner and brewmaster of renowned Russian River Brewing Co. In 1994 rumor has it that Cilurzo  while working for Blind Pig Brewery added too much mash to his upcoming beer. Instead of tossing it he ran with it. He later took his innovation to Russian River Brewing where Pliny the Elder became one of the most highly regarded DIPAs in the country. Since then many breweries coast-to-coast have powered up their IPAs, making it one of the most popular styles in the country. Need proof? In 2020 Double / Imperial IPAs ranked as the third highest checked in style on Untappd with 34,000 different DIPAs appearing on the app and 6,585,229 total check-ins.

That’s a lot of check-ins! To do our part we're drinking G-Bot from @newenglandbrewingco to unlock the “2X” badge, earned by checking-in to five different beers that contain Imperial / Double in its style name. Try 5 more for Level 2! We also highlight @texiKotequilabar in Hamden, CT as our Verified Venue of the Week, and shout out @edmundsoast and @UntitledArt for crafting the best beer and hard seltzer we had this week.

We love beers with a little extra ABV. Don't you? This week's spotlight is on the "Sky's The Limit" badge. You don't always intend to go for beers with a double-digit ABV, but when you do, you make it count! Be careful, 10% and up can really pack a punch. Get ready for some late night show antics as we crack open 2 beers that should probably be shared with friends... but that's a different badge. Harrison's drinking Pastry Works from Froth Brewing Co., a Pastry Stout with Peanut Butter, Graham Cracker, Coconut and Milk Sugar. Jon's drinking Dia De Los Muertos (Ghost 906) from Adroit Theory. At 13.7% ABV, this Russian Imperial Stout is the perfect balance between Bitter and Sweet, Creamy and Full Bodied, or Roasty and Malty.

We're recording this episode off the back of Beer Can Appreciation Day. We figured we'd keep the party going by featuring the badge, "For The Can". Canning is all the rage and it's not hard to see why - travels well, more environmentally friendly, and no need to carry your bottle opener. We're leveling up this badge with Thick Haze by Oskar Blues Brewery! Crack open a can-tastic beer and level up with us for this episode.

What We’re Drinking:

Thick Haze - Oskar Blues Brewery

https://untappd.com/b/oskar-blues-brewery-thicc-haze/3794310

ABV: 7%

Style: IPA - New England

IBU: 45

Notes: This full on Hazy IPA has a vibrant white head and a creamy mouthfeel that offers intense hop aromas and flavors of pineapple, mango, grapefruit, lemon, strawberry, honeysuckle.

Redaction: At 15:30 Harrison asks Jon if you need to drink "Uniques" to level up the Milestone badges. Jon said that they do not need to be Unique. Jon was wrong. 🤦‍♂ Milestone badges are only levelled up via Unique Beers.

What We’re Drinking:
Anchor Steam Beer - Anchor Brewing Company
https://untappd.com/b/anchor-brewing-company-anchor-steam-beer/6204

  • ABV: 4.9%
  • Style: California Common
  • IBU: 33
  • Notes: San Francisco's famous Anchor Steam, the classic of American brewing tradition since 1896, is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. The deep amber color, thick creamy head, and rich flavor all testify to our traditional brewing methods. Anchor Steam is unique, for our brewing process has evolved over many decades and is like no other in the world. Anchor Steam derives its unusual name from the 19th century when "steam" seems to have been a nickname for beer brewed on the West Coast of America under primitive conditions and without ice. The brewing methods of those days are a mystery and, although there are many theories, no one can say with certainty why the word "steam" came to be associated with beer. For many decades Anchor alone has used this quaint name for its unique beer. In modern times, "Steam" has become a trademark of Anchor Brewing.

Season 3 is coming to a close - what a year! Let's celebrate and go out with a bomb! Throw a fire in the fireplace - just make sure your Christmas tree is a safe distance away since you probably forgot to keep watering it about a week or so ago. But that's ok - beer is here to save the day. And not just any beer, the perfect beer for this day - in this month - in this year. This time of year demands something big and toasty and roasty and that's exactly what's in the bottle. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? It's hard to believe it was a year ago that Harrison and Jon were talking about the 'Year in Beer' — and we all know what a joyful quagmire 2020 has been... instead of reflecting on the things we wish were different — we're going to focus this episode on the things that were great! We're officially halfway through our Advent Box and it's going to be bringing some Pennsylvania Madness to the show today — but we're also recapping our Untappd Year In Beer! We've already seen so many of you talking about it in the Facebook group, I can't wait to see if Harrison has more uniques than Jon did — I can make a safe prediction we both drank a lot of beer at Home! This episode we're drinking Mad Elf from Tröegs Independent Brewing. Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email podcasts@untappd.com.

Surprise beer is here! If you've been following along with us on Twitter, we have been drinking a new surprise beer out of our beer advent boxes each day since the start of December. And today we're finally going to drink one together. It's a little chilly so we're hoping for a big ol' stout, or maybe a Christmas beer? We'll learn what it is about 3 minutes into the show...Have questions, want to be a guest on the podcast, or just want to say hello? Email podcasts@untappd.com.

Mount Beermore was created because our talented producer was drinking beer on Vacation — well — it wasn't a vacation, it was a Wednesday... The idea was stolen from Mount Rushmore which is a gigantic rock in South Dakota — Gutzon Borglum was charged with choosing who to put on that monument — and even the US Bureau of National Parks likes to ask "who would you put up there if it were your decision?" We took that idea and applied it to Beer.  We looked for the Founding Breweries of our own Beer Journey... we'll catch you up on the first 3 to get 'carved in stone' — but this episode is about the final piece of the puzzle/monument/mountain.... the 4th and final selection in our Mount Beermore! Tonight we're drinking local - Pillow Fort from Edmund's Oast and Flying Machine! The local part is extremely fitting - because while today is one of the biggest drinking days of the year in the US — we are already thinking about this Sunday, November 29th; aka Small Brewers Sunday! Untappd has partnered up with the Brewers Association to celebrate with beer lovers and we encourage everyone to support independent breweries, brewpubs, and taprooms.  Seek the Independent Craft Brewer Seal, and purchase craft beer for your holiday festivities.  And for those of you who aren't in the US, look for your own Country's independent seal, like SIBA in the UK, the Independent Craft Seal in Canada, and #ASKFORINDIEBEER in Australia! Double trouble? 2 for 1? Double bubbles? That works - what we're trying to say is we're drinking two beers today - and we'll be doing the same next week!  We're starting across the pond with a brewery hailing from Wokingham, England. Once famous for its bell making and silk mills, now craft beer fans are being drawn in by the intoxicating beers this brewery pumps out. We are knee deep into spooky season! And we'd be doing you all a disservice if we didn't enjoy another kind of beer that goes well with this time of year. "TNT" would've called this a "New Classic" back in the day as it may not be making all the hip/cool beer list's yet. But Drinking Socially is once again a step ahead - we're talking about Monster Beers! And no, we don't mean a large beer (check out our Stovepipe Episode 23 for that!) We're talking about beers that are actually named after monsters. This episode is going to be different. We're going still going to be Jon & Harrison talking about beer, and sometimes candy — but today we're not even doing to drink a beer. This episode features something like beer in that you can find it in bottles and cans, you can drink enough of it to love your favorite sports team, or celebrate a day off of work — and it's (mostly) full of bubbles. You can enjoy it thoroughly in any season, but it's different depending on where you live... but don't worry -- you can still get a badge for drinking Cider 🍻 🍎 We're drinking Blood Amulet by B. • ABV: 5.4
  • IBU: N/A
  • Notes: Czech style black lager. Our Coolship Lager Black gains its signature color from the use of European roasted malts. It is brewed using a traditional double decoction mash and hopped with fine European fine noble hops. After the boil it rests in our copper coolship for 1 hour. It is then transferred over our baudelot cooler into our open tanks for fermentation. After a cool fermentation using a classic Czech lager yeast, it is cellared for several months prior to release.

We've all responded to Spring 2020 differently than our New Years' resolution planned for — but one thing that has been undeniable is the increase in our consumption of 'core beers'. The 15 packs, and 24-packs of beers. The purchases normally reserved for a weekend camp trip, or tailgate. This episode we dive into some of the earliest of American Craft and re-visit the beers that paved the way for over 8000 Craft Breweries in the US. As you may expect, they're both amazing examples, and worth picking up the next time you're shopping to stock your fridge.

Correction: In this episode Jon talks about a baseball game between the Cleveland Indians and The Texas Texans. ⚾️ This was a swing and a miss -- the Texas Rangers actually played the Cleveland Indians during the game we reference. (Thanks Chad!)

What We’re Drinking:Samuel Adams Boston Lager by Boston Beerhttps://untappd.com/b/boston-beer-company-samuel-adams-boston-lager/3914

  • ABV: 5%
  • IBU: 30
  • Notes: Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the best example of the fundamental characteristics of a great beer, offering a full, rich flavor that is both balanced and complex. It is brewed using a decoration mash, a time consuming, traditional four vessel brewing process discarded by many contemporary brewers. This process brings forth a rich sweetness from the malt that makes it well worth the effort. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® also uses only the finest of ingredients including two-row barley, as well as German Noble aroma hops.

Pale Ale by Sierra Nevada Brewing Cohttps://untappd.com/b/sierra-nevada-brewing-co-pale-ale/6284

  • ABV: 5.6%
  • IBU: 38
  • Notes: Our most popular beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a delightful interpretation of a classic style. It has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor.

Glory Is Goldenbock by Burial & Zillicoah Beer Company Link: https://untappd.com/b/burial-beer-co-glory-is-goldenbock/3575781

  • ABV: 6%
  • IBU: 30
  • Notes: Glory is a destination for those who follow the gospel. It gives a hearkened voice to the apostles of beverage, those who remind us that taste is an amalgamation of tradition and revival. So we got together with our friends down on the river at Zilicoah Beer Co., to forge an often drinkable, yet full-flavored lager. Inspired by the Hellesbock-styled golden lagers of Germany, we decided to tip a hat to the regional American brewers that breathed new life into those styles in the new world. Glory Is was made from German barley, noble hops, and forged through a full decoction before lagering to crystalline perfection. Fully aged. Never Sacrificed.

Correction:At the 28:00 mark; we are talking about Oxygen in beer.

Harrison mentions "500 Parts Per Million" of DO (Dissolved Oxygen). The correct measurement is Parts Per Billion. (Reference)

Huge Cheers to Greig M for bringing this to our attention!

What We’re Drinking:Barrel-Aged Narwhal by Sierra Nevada Brewing* ABV: 11.9% * IBU: 50 * Notes: Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.

Jon's Cellar: Black Ops by Brooklyn Brewery (2017 Version)* ABV: 10.7% * IBU: 70 * Notes: Intense Russian imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels and 100% bottle refermented.

Harrison's Cellar: Big Bad Baptist by Epic Brewing Co (Release #33)* ABV: 11.8% * IBU: N/A * Notes: One Big Bad Imperial Stout with Cocoa nibs and Coffee beans. Each season's release uses a different dark roasted coffee.

Jenn's Cellar: Barrel Aged Wee Heavy by AleSmith Brewing Company (2014 Version)* ABV: 10% * IBU: N/A * Notes: A classic Scotch Ale. Scotch ales are typically sweet and malty, with a very subdued dose of hops– just enough to provide balance. AleSmith Wee Heavy is a wonderful interpretation of this traditional Scotch style. A year spent in bourbon barrels adds another layer of rich sweetness.

Badge Notes:Any version of these base beers (Any Year) should still unlock the Drinking Socially Podcast badge.

What We’re Drinking:Saison Dupont by Brasserie Dupont* ABV: 6.5% * IBU: 30 * Notes: Saison Dupont is a world classic beer and the yardstick for one of Belgium’s most important beer styles. It is the most admired AND imitated Saison in the world. A strong, vital yeast is key to full attenuation and thus to the style. Saison Dupont is straw colored with a dense creamy head. The nose is alive, like fresh raised bread, estery with citrus and spice notes. Full-bodied and malty, it sparkles on the palate and finishes with a zesty hop and citrus attack. Incredibly compatible with food!

Saison by Allagash Brewing Company* ABV: 6.1% * IBU: N/A * Notes: A Maine interpretation of a classic Belgian farmhouse-style ale. Notes of citrus and peppery spice accompany pleasant malt character and a tropical aroma. The addition of dark Belgian candi sugar complements the beer’s rustic flavor while giving it a dry palate.

Light Hearted Ale by Bell's Brewery* ABV: 3.7% * IBU: 36 * Notes: Light Hearted is aromatic, balanced, and incredibly easy-drinking. This Lo-Cal IPA has only 110 calories, yet all the Heart. What We’re Drinking:Banana Bread Beer by Eagle Brewery (formerly Charles Wells)* ABV: 5.2% * IBU: 18 * Notes: ABV of 5.2% in bottles, and 4.5% on cask. A silky, crisp, and rich amber-colored ale with a fluffy head and strong banana note on the nose.

Brewers Breakfast by Hopfly Brewing Co.* ABV: 9.5% * IBU: N/A * Notes: Brewer’s Breakfast is a tribute to the brewers who have started their mornings with a delicious Pearson’s Nut Roll and coffee while brewing. An imperial stout packed with peanut butter coffee and caramel—this is for the brewer in all of us. So, here’s to you!

Peanut Butter Jelly Time by Catawba Brewing Co.* ABV: 5.7% * IBU: 10 * Notes: Remember when your mom packed a PB&J sandwich in your lunchbox? The flavors all melded into pure comfort food by noon! EPISODE SUMMARY:This episode allows us to speak about the great white whales of beer while drinking one of the most prolific craft beers of a generation. Jon and Harrison share a bottle that many craft beer drinkers have on their own 'wishlist' — and drink another one that was voted on by fans of Untappd on Instagram.

What We’re Drinking:Pliny the Younger by Russian River Brewing Company* ABV: 10.25% * IBU: 90 * Notes: Pliny the Younger was Pliny the Elder’s nephew, in the case of this beer, the "Younger" is a triple IPA. Pliny the Younger is hopped three times more than our standard IPA, and is dry hopped four different times. + Thanks Charles and Elsa!

Sexual Chocolate by Foothills Brewing* ABV: 9.6% * IBU: 75 * Notes: A cocoa infused Imperial Stout. Opaque black in color with a dark brown head. Big chocolate aroma with notes of espresso, blackstrap molasses, dark sweet toffee and dark fruit. Smooth dark chocolate backbone with complex notes of coffee, dark toffee and dark fruit. + This particular bottle has been in Jon's cellar since 2017.

What We’re Drinking:La Fin du Monde by Unibroue* ABV: 9% * IBU: 19 * Notes: The end of the world. The excellence of triple fermentation through a blend of special yeasts gives this malt beverage an exquisitely robust flavor of exceptional refinement. Brewed since February 1994!!

Dunzo by Back Channel Brewing Collective* ABV: 6.75% * IBU: 58 * Notes: Dunzo was written to be a dank IPA, strung together by a huge nose of fresh strawberry, orange creamsicle, and squeezed citrus. What We’re Drinking:Ivan by Victory Art Brewing* ABV: 13% * IBU: 100 * Notes: Our version of the imperial stout, in addition to a fair dose of dark malts, It contains many special malts - whiskey malt (six-row barley smoked on peat), peat brewing malt and Belgian brown malt. This adds to the viscous thick taste and coffee aroma the smells of fuel oil and creosote. High alcohol is masked by a complex aroma, but beware! Beer is great for long, cold winter evenings. It goes well with chocolate desserts, as well as with dishes cooked on charcoal.

Old Rasputin by North Coast Brewing* ABV: 9% * IBU: 75 * Notes: Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia’s Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It’s a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish. + Winner of 14 Gold Medals

What We’re DrinkingMerry Christmas & Happy New Year (2019) by Anchor Brewing Company ABV: 6.9% * IBU: 40 * Slightly darker than last year’s Christmas Ale, the 2019 edition is layered with toasted caramel and coffee flavors with subtle hints of Mexican chocolate, rounded out with herbaceous spices. Crack open a bottle for a spiced whiff of western evergreens, roasted malts, and coastal flowers. It’s a rich, round and full bodied-treat with a silky, smooth finish. + Hand drawn label art from the same artist since 1975! + Redaction: Anchor is not the 2nd oldest brewery in the US, but may be the 2nd oldest craft* brewery in the US. (this is a highly debated topic)

Javanog Cream Stout by Haw River Farmhouse Ales* ABV: 7.2% * IBU: 48 * Notes: Aged 9 months in Spanish rum barrels, then finished with Mexican vanilla, fresh-grated nutmeg, and a beautiful Mexico Los Cotorras coffee bean concentrate from our friends at Joe Van Gogh in Hillsborough + Haw River also released a JavaFruitcake Cream Stout with brandy-soaked raisins.

Randalling and Infusion History Early 'Infusion' History + The first documented use of hops in beer is from the 9th century, though Hildegard of Bingen, 300 years later, is often cited as the earliest documented source. -Excerpt from [Wikipedia] + The first US commercial hop production was a 45-acre garden established in 1648 to supply a brewery in the Massachusetts Bay settlement. + Exceprt from https://www.britishhops.org.uk - By the 17th century ale (i.e.: un-hopped beer) was no longer popular and beer was the established drink and by 1655 hop cultivation grew rapidly in fourteen UK counties. In a successful year, an acre of good hops could be more profitable than fifty acres of arable land, but some farmers would not grow hops due to the erratic yields caused by drought, wet periods and mildew. Duty was imposed in 1710 and the Act prohibited the use of any bettering agent other than hops in beer, as hops were far more wholesome. The duty varied from year to year and speculation on the tax became a popular form of betting. * Randall History* + This invention is credited to Sam Calagione and the team at DFH Circa 2004 + It was originally created to beat the Pacific brewers in the Lupulin Slam event. + Click here to watch DogFish Head's amazing 2 minute 'infomercial' on their Randall Jr + Click here to buy a Randall Jr right from DogFish Head

Beer Traditions and Nostalgia Home Brewing + We're actually drinking our first Home Brew on this Episode! An old friend of Jon's sent in a Home Brewed IPA in honor of his new Daughter's first #BrewDay and started a tradition of his own. - Maddie's Meltdown by Hye Brewing - ABV: 9.2% - This batch of homebrew was named after my newly born girl Madison Ann. It was her first #brewday. A great combo of 3lbs of Passion Fruit puree and 15 Habanero peppers. Half the peppers added during the last 15 minutes of the boil and the rest during the secondary. The addition of Citra, Nugget and Ekuanot hops during the boil and some dry hopping. Which added some great bittering and aroma to this batch of homebrew. Has a nice pepper nose up front. Warning you that trouble is just around the corner + Harrison recalls meeting Tom Miklenovic at a party and seeing 'jugs of beer' while falling in love with the process of Home Brewing. + Jon remembers some Canadian Home Brewers sharing beers out of un-marked bottles at a football game. * Sports* + Jon talks about his first beer after football practice, and how beers and sports became such an important part of being a Bills fan. Also — how badly he wants to compete in a 'Crate Run' where him and Harrison drink a case of beer and 'run' a 10k + Harrison reflects on beer and sports in his early years — and how he would love to compete in a Turkey Run, but mainly just drink and walk to the finish line.

Stories From Drinking Socially Facebook Group* Jared asked for more news coverage and immediately got a lot of 'likes' so here we go with some updates in the world of Craft Beer.

Beer News* Harrison talks about the recent news of the Craft Brew Alliance being fully acquired by A-B InBev * Jon covers an event sponsored by the Craft Brew Alliance (2019 Pitch Slam) which functions like a 'Shark Tank' for upcoming breweries to pitch their business. Previous winners include: Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Braxton Brewing, Novo Brazil Brewing, and more.

What We’re DrinkingBeer #1 - No Time Like the Present by Voodoo Brewing Company (Collab with Equilibrium Brewery)

  • DIPA
  • 7.6% ABV
  • This DIPA is dry hopped at over 5lb/bbl with Nelson Sauvin and Galaxy.
  • Jon Brought this beer to the share because it was hard to find a beer that Harrison and Mike have not already had. Thanks for the Share Edward!

Beer #2 - Supplication by Russian River Brewing Company

  • American Wild Ale
  • 7.75% ABV
  • Brown ale aged in Pinot Noir wine barrels for one year with sour cherries, Brettanomyces yeast, and Lactobacillus & Pedicoccus bacteria.
  • Harrison brought this beer because it was killing him to wait any longer to drink it

Beer #3 - Black Tuesday (2015) - by The Bruery

  • Imperial Stout
  • 19.9% ABV
  • This beer is The Bruerys take on a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. The 2015 edition is the big in many ways, clocking in at 19.9% ABV. Rich caramel, toasted malt, vanilla, burnt wood and anise are just a few of the many flavors in this rich, decadent imperial stout.
  • Mike brought this beer because he is amazing and wanted to make sure he brought the biggest surprise to the table.

InterviewWe take a walk down memory lane, diving into Mike’s first “craft beer memory”, and even discuss what he’s ordering to eat after a bottle share. We gain insight into what it’s like trying to keep up with all the new beer, breweries, and trends in the market today.

Seven Cities Tour UpdateGreg (Twitter/Untappd), is nearly done with the Untappd Seven City Tour. The event locations have been trending on Untappd for each of the parties so far with only the final event at Cerebral Brewing coming up on October 1st. Follow along on the adventure via Untappd’s social media channels (Twitter / Instagram / Facebook) or here.

What We’re DrinkingBeer #1 - Oktoberfest by Boston Beer Company

  • Märzen
  • 5.3% ABV
  • We begin here as it's the most checked-in Oktoberfest beer on Untappd. Widely available in the US, and really good!

Beer #2 - Copper Legend by Jack's Abby Craft Lagers

  • Festbier
  • 5.7% ABV
  • This beer has been on Harrison's wishlist and rightfully so! Jacks Abby began as a family-owned brewery focusing on craft lagers. This is a great example of the style, and instantly let us know that our 5 Oktoberfest beers were going to be noticeably different!

Beer #3 - Oktoberfest - by Sierra Nevada Brewing a collaboration with Bitburger Braugruppe

  • Märzen
  • 6% ABV
  • This collaborative effort has been happening since 2015 and we felt this would be the perfect beer to transition from the US, to Germany. Each year, Sierra Nevada works with a German brewery to create a new and unique Oktoberfest beer. This is the 2nd most checked in Oktoberfest beer on Untappd this year, and the first time that yeast from Bitburger has left the brewery!

Beer #4 - Oktober Fest-Märzen by Ayinger Privatbrauerei

  • Märzen
  • 5.8% ABV
  • Our first proper German Oktoberfest beer was picked based on Untappd Check-in volume and excitement. This one had been logged by most of our own Untappd friends and we were eager to look for differences in the American versions and the German originals!

Beer #5 - Oktoberfest Märzen by Hacker-Pschorr

  • Märzen
  • 5.8% ABV
  • The final beer in our trip through Oktoberfest. We're hoping that the reviews aren't starting to get non-sensical at this point. This beer, and experiment proved that 5 beers of nearly the same style and ABV can all taste remarkably different. This beer was nothing like the previous 4.

Life and Limb by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery & Sierra Nevada Brewing

That creation is Life and Limb 2019, a 10.2 percent ABV strong ale brewed with birch and maple syrup that is a collaboration between Sierra Nevada’s founder Ken Grossman and brewer Brian Grossman and Dogfish Head Brewery’s founder and president Sam Calagione and vice president Mariah Calagione.

What We’re Drinking Beets Rhymes and Life by Fonta Flora Brewery

  • Farmhouse Ale - Saison
  • 6% ABV
  • Local Beet Saison Ale Brewed w/ Beets

Informal #1 by Fermentory Form

  • Farmhouse Ale - Saison
  • 7% ABV
  • Barrel + Saison blend with must. Informal is a new series of one-off beers, focused on using our barrel stock in new ways. This version is a take on Saison de Coupage, the historical practice of blending old barrel aged beer into a young saison to hasten its’ maturity.

What We’re Drinking Franny's Farmhouse by Bhramari Brewing Company

  • Farmhouse IPA
  • 5.5% ABV
  • Farmhouse IPA Infused with Hemp, Idaho 7, & Comet Hops. Brewed in collaboration with Listerman Brewing Company, White Labs Yeast, & Franny's Farmacy.eks in more than 20lbs of hops in each of several freshly emptied red wine oak barrels.

Happy to Donut by Wren House Brewing Company

  • Stout - Double/Oatmeal
  • 9% ABV
  • Happy to Donut was a simple predictive text error (we talk about donuts a lot) that became an inspiration. We brewed a 9% Imperial Stout and then added over a pound per barrel of exceptional @tchochocolate cacao nibs from Ghana and a few of the fattest Madagascar vanilla beans we’ve seen. The result is a rich and decadent stout akin to a chocolate donut

Careful With That Passion Fruit, Eugene by Beachwood Blendery

  • Lambic - Fruit
  • 6.5% ABV
  • Careful with that Passion Fruit, Eugene is the first of our ‘lambic inspired’ fruited series.

  • The passion fruit shines through and combines perfectly with the flavors and acidity from the original blend.
  • Fruity, funky, sour… this beer could be dangerous in the wrong hands.
