Pages From My Notebook: A True-To-Life Podcast: Recent Episodes

Erica Barnes

Pages From My Notebook: A True-to-Life Podcast is a passion project that takes a candid look into the mind of Erica, a 20-something Black girl experiencing the highs and lows of post-college life and navigating the world as a newly minted young adult. Topics come directly from what's in her mind and spilled onto the pages in her notebook app: self discovery and black womanhood, love, friendship and everything in between. Pages From My Notebook is the podcast for when you need to laugh, scream and just talk it out.

Take a minute, girl, come sit down and tell us what's been happening.....

Welcome 2023 and season 3 of PFMN! Who would've thought a quarantine project would go this far. Life as usual has been a mess, but now that we're in a new year.....nope, still bad. What better way to let it out than in good old PFMN overshare-on-the-internet fashion. Come with me as I describe where I've been since October: adulting fails, grad school shenanigans and where I'm going in 2023 (subject to change).

So long and farewell to the year 2021! In this month's episode, I track my progress based on a list of notes and goals I wrote on January 1st. In categories of school, money, love, podcast and self, my life this year didn't turn out the way I'd imagined, but I learned more about myself nonetheless. Happy New Year 2022, and please come in here acting like you got some sense.

"give yourself permission to keep learning the same lesson over and over again if that's what you need to grow" - @YasmineCheyenne

Get in loser, we're going healing - This week is about the ups and downs of healing and revisiting lessons and levels we thought we've conquered. It's hard to realize we have more work to do, especially on the same lesson, but it pays off when we become the people we deserve to be.

I'm Erica and I'm awkward....and Black, and a woman. All three things generally associated with having a hard time in life. This week I'm talking all things awkward, social anxiety, sensitivities and introversion through the Black female lens (shoutout Issa Rae, our fearless leader). The way awkward black girls live life should honestly entitle us to financial compensation, but I just have some lessons learned about trusting my intuition.

In a new mini series, I'll be exploring the impact of different emotions, events and interactions on our lives and the way we feel about ourselves.

For colored girls who have felt like they would never be loved because of the way they are, this is is for us. This week I explore the phenomenon of human desire and how Black girls (especially those who weigh more) are turned away from believing that unconditional love is a possibility. Through unpacking the ways in which we are policed, I provide sources of light to keep us believing in our truth (which is that we are love).

This is the first bonus episode of PFMN; they will serve as anything extra I forgot to include or found after recording/uploading.

This bonus is part of the late Chadwick Boseman’s 2018 commencement speech at his alma mater, Howard University, about how taking the road with the most difficulty will produce the greatest results and to follow purpose above everything. I think it serves as a perfect accompaniment to Episode #5. I so greatly wish I was sharing this under different circumstances, but this video was brought back to my attention due to his devastating battle with cancer and passing. I remember feeling the excitement leading up to the release of Black Panther (2018). I remember the joy of seeing so many beautiful Black people in a world where they are powerful and intelligent and witty and brave and literal heroes. The first thing I bought for my freshman year college dorm was the Black Panther movie poster. The world has truly lost an amazing human being but gained an angel.

The day after he passed, the sky was clear and the weather was warm for the first time in a week-long string of storms. The sunset that night was one of the most beautiful and vibrant I’ve seen this year so far. I like to think that was confirmation he was received into a much better , peaceful and glorious place after putting on a brave face for us all.

Tell someone, and yourself, you love them today. Extend a little more kindness just because. If you are going through hell, keep. Going. The other side will be worth it.

Long Live the King.

Episode 5 dives into the story of how I learned to trust my gut and live in my purpose. Covering my transformative freshman year of college, I get vulnerable and share how I'v worked on myself to find out the person I'm meant to become and try to help someone else along the way.

Episode 4 dives into the concept of love, relationships, alternatives to monogamy and the infamous entanglements. I tell you why having relationship goals is trash and how to know what you deserve in order to ask it of others. Episode #3 is about the lived experiences of Black women, in America specifically, and how we continually sacrifice ourselves to still be handed the short end of the stick. Listen to hear me talk about dating, self esteem, activism and knowing when we have to just save ourselves.

In Episode 2, I cover the popular phenomenon I like to call the Struggle Olympics: the constant  comparison competition (c'mon alliteration!) that students participate in where they see who has it harder. Categories include sleep deprivation, essay length, grades received and more!

Why do we feel the need to one-up each other's struggles? We all know college is hard, so why do we take pride in having it harder than someone else? Listen to learn about the olympics, impostor syndrome, hustle culture and how we can use rest as resistance, just like @TheNapMinistry has taught us.

This episode of PFMN is a recitation of the essay I wrote to express my feelings after the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless other innocent Black people taken by the hands of police and racist violence. This is in no way comprehensive of everything I feel regarding racism (because how can you fit 400 years of generational trauma into one post) but it was what I felt called to say at the time.

This essay is a call to action to any non-black person who has ever said they are not racist. It is not enough to simply say it, you must actively fight racism, as Black people have been fighting since our birth.
