Many of us lately, for a few months now, haven’t been sitting in rush hour traffic and juggling work, errands, carpools and extracurricular activities. Stress levels, aside from the fact we are living through and coming out of a world pandemic, will likely set back in- and maybe we will find we return to the craziness with a new perspective and focus. I know my focus and perspective on life changed a few years ago leaving the world of television behind in search of personal growth and new challenges. My guest today experienced something very similar. Traci Shepheard was enjoying an incredibly successful 20 plus year career in the corporate world. Mingling with celebrities, jetting off to new destinations, travelling, running the show and keeping up with every mover and shaker in her industry. - And then her mission changed, and it really slowed down, down to the point, where breath, a simple breath became her focus. Traci created Meditation Works Mindstream, Canada’s first mobile meditation studio with the mission of sharing the benefits of meditation with Canadians, positively disrupting their day. Traci’s concept gained national exposure when she pulled up to hospital driveways in her iconic Airstream bus during Covid and gave the staff a much-needed reprieve from the craziness inside.

For many of us- life is still somewhat on pause and for others things only got busier. However, for many professional athletes- life came to an uncomfortable and scary standstill.

Such has been the case for RedBlacks running back Brendan Gillanders. Hand him a hockey stick- and he can shoot, a pair of running shoes and he will spring from the blocks, throw him the football and he’ll run into the endzone- and then celebrate while playing on his guitar- essentially he’s what my friends and I used to call “The Man Of All Seasons”.

But- that’s not the reason why Brendan Gillanders is joining us on the podcast- this homegrown talent and former Ottawa U Gee Gee’s player and Kinesiology major, is a fan favourite with the CFL's RedBlack. With a season on hold, a life on hold, Brendan is going back to his roots and his education helping others stay on track with their health and wellness goals and giving young athletes an added advantage for their own uncertain futures. We are talking nutrition, fitness and recovery, staying top of mind, on top of your game even when the finish line is not quite known. Our chat goes far beyond athletes and can resonate with even the couch potato :)

We are coming out of a time when those who cared for others became our new heroes- those in the medical profession, from the doctors to the nurses, the long term care home staff, the janitors, chefs, cooks and cleaners. These jobs finally acknowledged and recognized for their real value and putting their own health at risk to care for others.

Prior to COVID, this health care worker also came in the form of a caregiver- the reality is however, not all caregiver are given that title- they are family members and close friends often finding themselves in a new role. It's not always the easiest thing to balance- someone elses well being as well as your own.

Dawn Renee is the founder of Traveling Caregivers, a pioneer holistic caregiver herself, complimenting her work by integrating herbal medicine, ayuerveda, energy work and emotional guidance. She bridges the gap between balance of life while navigating a multitude of caregiving concerns with health, a holistic lifestyle, administration and advocacy.

Over the past decade she has been instrumental in helping individuals reclaim their health and lives on their own terms, in their own way. Dawn joins us from Nashville Tennessee.

For months I didn’t spend a cent on gas. I had a tank that seriously lasted me almost four months and my credit card saw very few purchases. I wore the same outfit days at a time, the shampoo and conditioner lasted longer-(I mean I never did my hair) and I rarely ate a meal that wasn’t cooked and prepared in my home. Which brings me to the totally absurd amount I spent on groceries- never had I seen the bills look that way- or the food in the fridge disappear as fast as it came in. All meals were eaten at home, all snacks, late night snacks, bored eating snacks emotional eating snacks, everything…was part of our new normal. I have a family of four- two daughters- I can’t imagine what the grocery bill was like for my friends with teenage sons.

So, while much of the stranded at home is behind us- we are still struggling with food- snacks, eating, budgeting, healthy foods, healthy snacks and meal planning through the summer. I've brought in some help to give you some additional resources, tips, tricks and inspiration and she’s even handing over her top 15 healthy Costco snack list.

I had heard the name Jana Webb circulating in my cirlces for quite some time- either through the athletic world or the TV world, but we had never actually met or crossed paths. Then in the span of two weeks Jana was a guest on two different virtual events I was hosting and the timing was perfect for have her on as a guest.

Some of you may be familiar with her name if you are a fan of The Real Housewives of Toronto or maybe you have heard of JOGA or JOGA House. Jana created JOGA which is yoga for athletes, a popular training tool for professional sports teams and you may have seen her on youtube, entertainment tonight, TEDTalks, on the cover of fitness magazines….and the list goes on.

Her success training professional athletes all around the world is amazing and the concept behind JOGA is something I was eager to learn more about- movement and breath. But that's just a sliver of the story- it's her miraculous recovery from a horrible car accident a few years ago that really puts into perspective the power of the body to heal itself, and the power of the mind to be the greatest asset. Jana is still recovering from a broken back in three places and serious concussion symptoms but is living in the present moment and using our authentic voice to do so. There is plenty to learn from her story and inspiring tools and outlooks to bring into your own life.

It's a buzz word we seem to hear often enough and yet it's actually not an accepted medical diagnosis. It is a lay term applied to a collection or a cluster of nonspecific symptoms, such as body aches, fatigue, brain fog, nervousness, stress, sleep disturbances, cold hands and feet, digestive problems and the list goes on. Marek Doyle, a British Functional Nutrition Therapist has spent the last 13 years looking through data, patient outcomes and the disconnect between scientific literature, medical standard of care and real life outcomes. This was a personal mission for Marek having to face his own metabolic issues as well. Featured in a number of media publications like Men's Health and the Daily Mail, this Londoner, prior to covid, was a popular attraction at numerous conferences including the Health Optimization Summit in which he spoke about the Adrenal Immune Cycle. We talk about his personalized approach to each individual and how their body thrives or misfires, the mechanisms that link stress, inflammation and energy metabolism, organic acid tests and so much more.

Keeping our children in mind, I figured this was a great time to bring in Lindsay Sealey. Lindsay is an educator, consultant, mentor and facilitator. She is the author of Growing Strong Girls and Rooted, Resilient and Ready and she’s the CEO and founder of Bold New Girls and Brave New Boys. Bold New Girls is a unique teaching and coaching company, merging academic, social and emotional support, while emphasizing empowerment. Right now we are having difficult conversations, cancellations of plans and opportunities, online schooling, endless screen time, limited social interaction, or worse- sexting, the challenges of healthy eating, daily movement and the list goes. Not only are we as parents exhausted- I can only imagine the educators are as well- juggling their own families while being online with ours. We have gone through periods of focus and attention with school work to more recently total agitation and frustration of it as well. Socially we are all adapting- although not necessarily for the better. Lindsay helps us understand what might be happening with their maturing brains. For any of you past these growing pains, well past puberty, or childhood and into your adult years- you might recognize how maybe - had topics or events been handled or discussed differently with your parents – the way you see things or the experiences you had may have been different. Lindsay, considers herself a difference-maker, a social activist intentional about promoting local and global social change joined us from Vancouver.

Ever heard of "Mammal Longevity Research, Carbon Nano-Materials and Nano Antioxidants? Don't worry- neither had I.

I've brought in the mad scientist himself, Chris Burress, the Founder of SES Research and "My Vital C" to help us understand some ground breaking research that is having a huge impact on the health and wellness scene.

We dig deeper into the research, understand the impact of free radicals and learn how the olive oil based C60 is proving to help with sleep, pain, the nervous system, the ageing process and so much more.

"If It Doesn't Challenge You , It Won't Change You"

The one opportunity many of us have right now is to get outside and go for a walk or a run, even a bike ride and feel the wind, the sun and the fresh air. It really becomes a sense of freedom from the forced qurantine and life within our four walls.

Let's Get You Moving: Ian Fraser- President of Run Ottawa and Race Director of Tamarack Race Weekend- the weekend has now gone virtual- but with some amazing new opportunities...

We’ve got some great stories about Ian’s athletic journey but also some great insight into how many of you can take the opportunity over the next few months to get out and run- or walk- maybe even run further than you thought, faster than you thought. I love his tips and insight into the activity as well as how to get started- especially if your starting point is the couch. He talks about runnings influence on mental health- despression, anxiety and so much more. This is about becoming a participant, not a competitor and probably what inspired me to head out for my run this past weekend. Its a great story with lots of takeaways- even if you don't plan on lacing up the shoes.

Ian Fraser is a former Canadian elite ironman competitor, cyclist, runner, restauranteur, and entrepreneur. Last fall Ian took over as President of Run Ottawa as well as Race Director for the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. For those in the Ottawa area and cylcing community you may be familiar with Cyclelogic-that’s Ian’s baby- although he happily closed the doors this past fall.

Mindfulness, Meditation, Mindfulness Meditation How does one even approach the subject of mindfulness- is there an actual beginning , middle and end? Is everyone’s path or experience the same? What is the outcome we should be expecting? We’re going through an unprecedented time that's impacting, our life, our health, freedoms, work, finances etc. It’s a profound time of uncertainty, anxiety and a collective fear. It's been a year since I started meditating and I trully believe it is what's helping me stay so grounded during the world pandemic. I am able to come back to the present moment and enjoy its gifts and teachings - something I would have missed a year ago. I really hope you listen with an open mind to this podcast and realize how it can benefit your life, even if just a little. Jenn, who is actual a former spy (no joke) shares some incredible insight into how our brains really work, the benefits of the practice, the myths, tricks, tips she helps uncover and so much more. We dive into the process of sitting and being with our pain or suffering rather than skimming over it, as well as the more uplifting and joyful side of being more present in our daily lives. There is lots to take from our chat including a meditation at the end.

Jenn mentions a number of resources, books, teachers, courses and meditations in our chat which see says can be found on her "resources" page of her website: http://www.omwellness.ca

Do you trust your intuition? How connected are you with your mind, body, soul?

We focus on the subject of energy today- released just in time for the New Moon this Wednesday night. Trust me, I really did need to figure out the timing and release of this one.

Energy healing is a holistic practice that activates the body's subtle energy systems to remove blocks. By breaking these energetic blocks, the body's inherent ability to heal itself is stimulated. There are many ways people approach energy healing; acupuncture, reiki, even massage have the energy component to it.

The New Moon, is a time for new beginnings and for those tapped into and ready to accept the energy of a new moon; which bring fresh perspectives, improved clarity, a sense of renewal and rebirth. We are going through a major shift in the world right now, pivoting, changing evolving in so many aspects of our life.

Jessica Keats is an International energy healer, specializing in awakening who a person trully is and helping remove what's in their way from becoming their true self. Jessica is renowned for healing limiting beliefs, fears and past traumas so her clients improve physically and emotionally while reaching new heights professionally.

Its a fun conversation, be open minded and maybe take what you need from this, or simply reflect on the possibility of being in tune with one's every flow- the good and the bad.

Jessica by the way is also the President of the Women's Business Network here in Ottawa.

We all deal or cope with stress in very different ways…There will be a massive learning curve for the world as we shift our habits and behaviours and create a new normal for the time being. At the beginning of the year, Eliza Kingsford, the author of Brain Powered Weight Loss, joined me on the podcast hitting on peoples relationship with food, nutrition and the psychology of eating…

Currently with COVID -19 and the world in quarantine or isolation our obsessions with food and consumption has been at the forefront. The memes, gifs and jokes about how we are overeating, over consuming and binging on food and alcohol. Joking aside, when food is an issue, when food is a trigger, when we stress eat- the underlying issues also come out.

So what exactly is happening in our brains and how can we protect our nervous systems right now?

Within hours of it's release Tuesday morning, Rob Imbault's book " Before I Leave You: A Memoir on Suicide, Addiction and Healing" hit #1 on Amazon in a number of categories. Simply amazing...

We sat down for the podcast taping a number of weeks ago, before COVID was even on the radar for Rob's first interview EVER about his story. I wanted to time this podcast with the book release.

What started as a suicide note- originally meant as a goodbye letter by Rob turned into a book, an apology, therapy and a healing tool to turn things around.

This book is a redemption story, an introduction into repressed memory and childhood trauma, a harsh reality of the darker side of Las Vegas- and a reality check of how addicts manage to hide their struggle, their troubles and their illness from colleagues, family and friends.

Some of you may be familiar with Rob’s name as he was one of the founding partners for Assent Compliance, helping build a multi, multi million dollar company involved in revolutionizing supply chain data collection and risk management - all while struggling with substance abuse issues.

We talk about his healing, his early practices of meditation, a clean lifestyle and diet, yoga, writing and books. Now a married father of two- this story gives you hope, knowledge and an understanding of the internal battle people face and how they find the courage to push through.

I also worked with Rob to help prepare him for his media launch and book tour. I am grateful for the new friendship which grew from that.

OMG- stop what you are doing and listen to this podcast. The world is different as we battle the pandemic of COVID-19. Our lives are full of stress, anxiety, discomfort and the unknown. Our mental health is being tested, as are our relationships, finances, businesses, education and future outlook. I am incredibly grateful for the time I spent with health psychologist Kelly McGonigal and I know you will soak in every aspect of this podcast.

I first came across Kelly McGonigal watching her TED talk on stress via YouTube. When you have over 20 million views- and a hot topic- it tends to draws people in. I loved her energy and her passion for the topic. Little did I know there was so much more to her, her career and the work she is doing now. Kelly, is a research psychologist, lecturer at Stanford University, and an award-winning science writer. Her scientific research focuses on the mind-body connection, and how to cultivate resilience and compassion. She is the author of the international bestseller “The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It”. “The Upside of Stress: Why Stress Is Good for You, and How to Get Good at It”. “Yoga for Pain Relief” and her most recent book “The Joy of Movement: How exercise helps you find happiness, hope, connection and courage”

Kelly translates academic research into practical strategies for health, happiness and personal success.

We hit on topics from each of her books- as they relate to our current situation in isolation and quarantine and information I know you will take with you long after this crisis is over.

There is something to be learned from the stories we see unfolding when we watch shows like "The Bachelor or Bachelorette". Leaving the producers and the most dramatic endings out of this- it’s a breakdown of relationships, communications, sex, jealousy, vulnerability and the list goes on….

Rachel and Kyle Wright, founders of the Wright Wellness Center created a hit podcast- "The wright reasons – through the lens of the bachelor franchise". Essentially the Bachelor equivalent of Sports Center- real talk- real analysis – real experts….

Rachel, who is a license psychotherapist, marriage councillor, sex educator, speaker and writer started to realize just how much dialogue was lacking when it came to relationships, marriage, communication and the list goes on. As the popularity of the podcast grew- so did the topics. In fact-- in truth-- this quickly moved past the singles and into those in relationships- all relationships navigating sex, intimacy, transformation- all things-everything- not taught in school. We seriously talk about everything in this podcast, sex ed, scheduled sex, monogamy, teen sex, love language, communication, sexless marriages and everything else you can possibly imagine....or not imagine...but we go there!

On a side note- Rachel had more to her story than I realized and just last week she published this article for Shape Magazine. I was speechless. This was not part of our podcast but I thought it might be an interesting read. https://bit.ly/3a10cYO

More than just community, our physical home is criitcally important to our levels of dopamine, serotonin, as well as perceptions of beauty and awe.

Our modern living environment has created new health risks - sedentary lifestyles, lack of physical activity, poor diet, stress, social isolation and environmental degradation. Our environments favors driving over biking, sitting over walking, riding in elevators over using the stairs, texting over face-to-face conversations, and screen time over outdoor recreation.

Have you ever set boundaries- I mean your own personal boundaries, or do you constantly tell yourself that some things are simply out of your control? You find yourself feeling let down, walked over, taken advantage of or worse silenced.

Our emotional and physical systems are tracking our boundaries all the time. The trouble—the reason - as you will learn in Nancy Levin’s book—is that in many cases, our conscious mind is totally unaware we have a boundary, much less that it’s been crossed.

Nancy Levin, is a master life coach, radio host and best selling author of five books including her latest “Setting Boundaries will set you Free: The Ultimate Guide To Telling The Truth, Creating Connection and Finding Freedom”. She has coached thousands of people to live their lives on their own terms by making themselves a priority and setting boundaries that stick.

Here is something to think about:

When we are avoiding external conflict- we are creating more internal conflict.

Someons else's response to our truth is not our responsibility, its theirs.

She produced more than a 1000 events for Hay House Publishing, doing everything for others, while letting her own life come crashing down- she was quick to notice the pattern, shift, and set her sights on helping others.

At the end of the podcast we talk about the course Nancy is launching with the registration deadline just a few days away- I have attached her link with all the details.

Never in a million years did I think I would be mentioning meditation and yoga in the same sentence as to things I practice in my life. I am beyond grateful that I didn't let stubborn and preconceived notions continue to fester and hold me back from things I would eventually learn to love.

I am so excited to be tackling this topic and being able to do it with Dr. Andrew Pipe, one of Canada's leading experts on this topic.

I have already mentioned to my girlfriends that it's a must listen (especially for anyone with teenage aged kids). Its scary, eye opening and something you need to be be up to date with. Did you know there is an actutal vaping line of clothes desgined to conceal the actual vapes so kids can vape in class? Did you know, last month, the yougest victim to die from vaping related illness was just 15 years old and would you be surprised to know that vaping is harder to quit than smoking?

I remember reading a quote by Dr. Andrew Pipe, former chief of the Division of Prevention and Rehabilitation at the University Of Ottawa Heart Institute and a professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa in which he stated. "Vaping is an issue that’s screaming for attention...we’re seeing a public health disaster unfolding in front of our eyes"

Dr. Pipe, an Order of Canada recipient, is currently involved in clinical research assessing new approaches to smoking cessation, strategies designed to facilitate exercise adoption and novel initiatives to prevent cardiovascular disease.

He has addressed audiences in over 30 nations and is frequently consulted on issues related to tobacco use and smoking cessation, drug use in sport, and physical activity and health.

Now he has school prinicipals and administrators eager for any of his time, guidance and advice on this crisis. At the end of the day- its going to come down to government poliicy and pressure by the public to make changes.

Also a heads up- NO, I will not be bringing in someone from the Tabacco industry to counter the arguments :)

Allergies are one of the most common ailments, causing children to miss school and parents to miss work. Left untreated or unresolved, stuffy noses, itchy skin, and irritated bellies can lead to chronic asthma, eczema, inflammatory bowel disease, and neurological disorders. Fatigue, irritability, body aching, digestive problems, and other vague ailments are typical of allergies. They can also be related to environmental factors, additives, body chemistry, addiction, parasites and childhood illness. Lori Preshing is all too familiar with issues involving allergies and children- to the point of desperate tears in her pantry- so much so, that she became a holistic nutritionist to focus on children with food allergies and finding the right supplementation. She created her business and the website https://www.allergiesandme.ca/ with amazing blogs covering topics like picky eaters, pooping, the immune system and the Nemcheck protocol.

Wim Hof , The man himself, also known as "The Iceman" got his nickname by breaking a number of records related to cold exposure. His feats include climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts, running a half marathon above the Arctic Circle on his bare feet, and standing in a container while covered with ice cubes for more than 112 minutes.

Here is a little background:

Over time, we as humans have developed a different attitude towards nature and we've forgotten about our inner power. This is the ability of our body to adapt to extreme temperature and survive within our natural environment. Because we wear clothes and artificially control the temperatures at home and at work, we've greatly reduced the natural stimulation of our bodies, atrophying the age-old mechanisms related to our survival and basic function. Because these deeper physiological layers are no longer triggered, our bodies are no longer in touch with this inner power.

The method itself is based on three princicples…cold therapy, breathing and commitment and has been said to help with a number of factors including stress reduction, better sleep, faster recovery, more creativity, better sports performance increased focus and mental clarity along with certain medical conditions like inflammation.

There are those around the world who share and teach the WimHof way of life, Johannes Egberts being one of them. Johannes, an avid biohacker who grew up in the Netherlands has been traveling the world teaching and inspiring others to live by the wimhof principles. He is quick to point out that he believes the Wimhof Method to be the most powerful and available tool to achieve health, happiness and strength. I am hoping that some of you see the topic of this podcast and breathe a sigh of relief that it doesn't affect you. Infertility can be devastating for couples wanting children of their own. I am, however, really excited to bring you the information that could help you, your loved ones and future generations to come. If you know people who are thinking of starting a family, trying to start a family or are struggling already with getting pregnant- please listen and share the content. This podcast also hits on a number of different health concerns and scientific studies that involve both men and woman alike.

Joining us from Denver Colorado is Dr. Amy Beckley, a PHD scientist and infertility veteran who struggled herself getting pregnant and who experienced several miscarriages as well.

She is the inventor and founder of PROOV, a first of its kind at home progesterone kit. It’s an innovative new option for women trying to gain more of an understanding around their reproductive health and be empowered with data about their body that they never could have gotten in the comfort of their homes before.

She has a PhD in Pharmacology and expertise in hormone signaling . She began tracking her own hormone levels at home and discovered that she had low progesterone—which was causing her to lose pregnancy after pregnancy. Progesterone is not a topic often discussed and we break down a number of reasons why this is the case

It’s a fresh year with new goals and resolutions possibly consist of trying to live a healthier lifestyle and possibly shed a few pounds?

However, something tells me you've been here before- you've tried this before- this resolution- is starting to feel like groundhog day.

It probably feels like insanity….

A wise man once said "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" . It seems old habits, emotions and patterns usually come back into play…

And here’s the key….

The most important component in the battle with your body is healing the source of your suffering. Successful weight management requires shifting your identity and belief systems...well before diet and exercise.

I'm not throwing this out there without providing you some answers. The book is called "Brain Powered Weight Loss" written by Eliza Kingsford. Eliza is described asa mind/body practitioner and nationally recognized weight management expert. She is a leading voice in the burgeoning mind/body connection movement. She is also a licenced psychotherapist, trained in clinical psychology, Neuro Emotional Technique [NET], and Emotional Freedom Technique (or tapping) methodologies. She was a behavioral coach, then clinical director, and finally executive director of an obesity and weight management summer program for teens for 10 years.

She wrote the book- Brain Powered Weight Loss in 2017, highlighting the brain-weight equation and how our weight is impacted by the relationship we have with food, and not just the food itself.

Our discussion is quite fascinating and as we discuss concepts and checklists in greater detail she also mentions worksheets available to the listerners as well. I am attaching the link for you to sign up and get the worksheets- so that you can listen and follow along.

Mental Health- I figured this was as good as a time as any to bring this topic to light with the holidays.

We all suffer in our own ways. No one is perfect, we all have our inner battles. There are places of darkness and of light. We seek love and acceptance and we strive to be the best version of ourselves. I am very aware this is easier said than done- but when we have "hope" - we have purpose. The focus for this podcast is on Cognitive Behavior Therapy.

In a world that is creating an open dialogue and much more honest discussions about our mental health, therapy seems to be a much more common word used in daily conversations then ever before.

Short term, long term therapy, conventional, psychology, phsychiatry…you name it….we are talking about it…or at least I want us talking about it- without the stigma.

Joining me here in studio this week is Dr. Sanjay Rao, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Ottawa University and Additional Professor of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University with degrees here in Canada, India and the UK. Dr. Rao practices from a place of identifying and treating the client both biomedically and therapeutically. He has delivered over 300 workshops in Cognitive Behavioural Therapies, presented in national and international conferences and has been published in several scientific journals.

We learn about different modalities in therapy and finding what is right for you. Dr. Rao has a really interesting background and a profound passion for helping others.

How many viral videos have had an impact on you?

I caught one a couple months ago that made me stop, rewind, and watch again…It was a video of a teenage autistic boy with physically disabilities opting to leave his wheelchair behind and go for a walk. His name is Brandon and the video taken by his trainer garnered over 6.8 millions views on LinkedIn and 150 million combined views on other forms of social media and through news outlets. His trainer, Daniel Stein is the man behind Special Strong. This wasn’t an overnight miracle- it was years of building up to the moment- a well worth investment his parents made- Buy Brandon a new wheelchair or invest in therapy. Special Strong has been instrumental in helping hundreds of clients who live with a variety of conditions which include autism, apspergers, down syndrome, ADD, spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, victims of stroke and more.

There are techniques and cues Daniel has learned over the years that help connect with his clients. Touch, hand placement, dialogue during activities which allow his clients to feel at ease and in control. Based out of Texas, Daniel also created certify strong, helping other trainers all over the world to get certified in helping train people with special needs…

Sometimes you can walk into a room of people, and be able to describe the energy in the room. It can feel cold or hostile, or on the other spectrum can feel warm and inviting.

Albert Einstein explains that energy cannot be created or destroyed- it can only be changed from one form to another.

Here are some of my favorite "quotes" on energy:

"Energy is contagious- either you affect people or you infect people"

" We become what we think about…energy flows where attention goes"

I doubt I would have picked this topic a year ago, but based on my personal experience and the shift I have been making- I am more aware than ever about the power of our energy and focus, and want to share that with you.

Energy healer, certified Reiki master, EFT & regression works practitioner and author Diane Lanthier is my guest this week. We will dive deeper into Emotional Freedom Techniques also known as tapping. I will say, with most questions I threw at Diane, EFT continued to be brought back into the discussion.

There is no mention of psychic readings, tarrot cards or crystal balls in this podcast- simply the understanding that the energy in our bodies have the ability to block us from our wants and needs as well as manfiest into so much more.

We hit on a topic that goes much deeper than what we see on the surface. We dive into the world of plastic surgery- although I promise you, not from the "House Wives Of Beverly Hills" standpoint. Please don't envision nose jobs, tummy tucks, liposuction, face lifts, and breast augmentations. I truly am not looking to offend- but the reality is, plastic surgeons and their work goes far beyond esthetics and often deeper into health benefits, comfort, reconstruction and improved quality of life. Sometimes, the solution can be found in procedures we hadn’t considered.

Dr Trefor Nodwell from The Ottawa Clinic comes to us with a number of degrees, awards and accredited fellowships. He also comes with some interesting and honest outlooks on the background behind the work, as well as how it’s helping certain health conditions one may not have thought of- from burns, to headaches to excessive sweating- there are certain treatments which fall under medial and cosmetic surgery and dermatology.

Welcome to my milestone 100th episode of Living Your Life w Lianne Laing. This is a big deal! After 99 amazing guests on the show I decided that the 100th guest would be ME!

The process of recording this podcast took me out of my comfort zone and into a very vulnerable position. I open up about the challenges I faced when deciding to leave my 20 year carreer in broadcast televion. I suspect, others out there face similar challenges everyday. I have gone through quite the transformation in the last two years and I wanted to share aspects of my journey that I felt might help others. How many of you have thought about taking a massive leap of faith from current life in hopes of one day living the life you dream about.

I talk about the mistakes I made or things I overlooked when it came to setting up a business and the reality of working for myself. I talk about the shift in mindset

and dealing with the "mean girl" in my head. I go off about the brutal habit of comparing ourselves to others and I talk candidly about my introduction into meditation and how its been the game changer for me through the process. And a heads up, I do get teary on a few subjects but manage to recover :)

Remember the slogan and the song...."Don't worry - Be Happy"?

How wonderful life would be if it were just that easy.

That's exactly the topic of this week's podcast and I found the discussion quite fascinating.

We all seem to know someone, who always seems to be smiling, happy, content, grateful- we think they must be faking it, putting on an act to mask their real emotions and pain. I mean, let's be honest – who is really that happy. Is it actually possible?

Are we so numb to people talking about feeling anxious, stressed and depressed that we just expect that to be the norm….has status quo become about surviving rather than thriving…

The truth is- there are people out there who are genuinely happy, who see the positive in life, even during difficult times. There are people who have constant compassion and appreciation for life. Who find it easier to smile than to frown and who have the ability to spread their joy and light to others.

Let me introduce you to Happiness Exprt Kathie Donavon.

Now its not that Kathy, a former tv personality, sees rainbows and unicorns all the time – in fact at one point in her life, Kathy called herself an unhappiness expert- very familiar with shame, doubt, fear and all the things that hold us back from feeling good. She changed her reality and she has some wonderful stories on how you can do the same. Inspiration in Action- A Womans Guide To Happiness is one of her books, along with Harnessing The Radical Power Of Courage…

Whether its joy, trauma or singular significant events, we each carry with us, hundreds – if not thousands of images in our mind which play a critical role in how we see things, our lives and the world.

Most people think that you can't actually change ingrained patterns like anxiety, fear, lack of confidence, stress lack of fulfillment, low energy pain, patterns of self-defeat, under-earning, underperforming and so much more....

Leading world Eidetics expert, Wendy Yellen knows you can....

Wendy joins us from Santa Fey, New Mexico where she left her private and incredibly successful psychotherapy practice to commit full time to this transformative work - she has also been named one of the International Top 3 Transformational experts ...

So questions to ask

How does one really change?

How closely are you really looking at yourself?

What aspects of your life are really pulling you down?

How do you access the real you, without the history of your experiences in your memory.

Wendy is able to actually answer these questions.

There will be a twist as we attempt for me to try the work- with an unfortunate end- but we follow through as best as we can.

I met Rory Gardiner on the set at CTV Morning Live and interviewed him about his country music career. It's impressive. He has toured worldwide and recorded songs in Nashville, and even opened up for Keith Urban. His latest albums are geared for kids.

He's also a comedian, performing at comedy clubs all over North America and chillin with canadian comics like Tom Green and Mike MacDonald.

But the turning point for me asking Rory to come on the podcast was his experience as a TedX speaker talking about humor as a coping mechanism. For my listeners here in Ottawa, we remember last years 6 Tornados hitting down in one powerful storm, people here continue to rebuild their lives and their homes. Rory and his family were one of the families hardest hit, running to safety only to see their home destroyed. What followed was a series of funny videos that went viral as Rory used humour to explain and show the devastation. Ive seen the vidoes- they are hilairious. We talk about humour as a coping mechanism, why he isn't alone and how he has learned from the experience what's really important in life.

Nabil Khatib would likely have me running in the opposite direction if we encountered each other on a dark path, he’s the exact look alike of every villain played in every movie every written, however since I know better, I’d be clinging to his arm knowing he’d likely be the best to defend against any danger. He is a teddy bear wrapped in an MMA fighter. While he can play the tough guy on film, stunt double some fight scenes and ride off like fast and the furious, this former professional MMA fighter and 4th degree back belt is a softy to boot. Just give him a knife and this chef would rather chop up a meal, then use it as a weapon. Actually, in all honesty he was in tears within 60 seconds of starting to speak- and there would be a handful more times throughout the podcast when he opens up about real life and what the future holds.

Over the course of Nabil’s professional fighting career where his nickname was Nabil “The Thrill” he also witnessed the influx of people, men, woman and children alike, turning to the martial arts for its discipline as well as the physical and emotional release. A way to combat stress and anxiety, and a tool used to hear the most silent of voices. As head coach of the team bushido fitness center – there approach is “Confidence, Balance, Self Protection….approaching the world with clarity, self confidence and control over your body.

I had intended for the podcast to be about self defence, martial arts as an exercise tool and the mind of a fighter, yet the conversation had so many twists and turns that I left feeling like anyone who has experienced adversity, rock bottom or self doubt would resonate with the story and appreciate everything about it. I do hope you all take a listen.

Move over BNN and MSNBC. I managed to get former Canopy Growth Founder and CEO Bruce Linton to sit for an hour. He thought it couldn't be done- and time flew :)

Where do you start when you know the man sitting across from you helped build a company valued in its infancy years at almost 20 Billion Dollars (Canadian). We had plenty to talk about!

It’s always had a bit of a Hollywood script to it- An abandoned chocolate factory turned into a thriving production line of contraversal product, which might, make one crave chocolate after consumption. The movie could be a bio-pic of about Bruce Linton’s life- or at least the stage in his life when he built Canopy Growth- one of the biggest publicly traded cannabis companies in the world. Rewind less than a decade and this wasn’t an easy conversation to have at a board room table. This journey has several twisted forks in the road that led to this opportunity, scarier than most of us would be willing to venture on- but Bruce, a graduate of Carleton University hopped on board- almost like a magic carpet. He traveled and we marveled at what he was able to accomplish, until the magic died.

I’m not sure why I make the comparison of Bruce’s entrpreneurhip reign to an elite athlete but I do- at the top of ones game- only to be traded and sent down to the minors. Bruce was fired not long ago from his post as CEO, but like any true champion, you find your way back to the top and it seems like Bruce has been quick to rebound.

We talk about business, mentorship, leadership, transformation, family, weed, drugs, government and the list goes on. I really enjoyed the time we spent talking and know we will continue to see his name in the headlines with his latest projects and ventures.

I’ll be honest, I have been targeted over the years by numerous companies like Arbonne, Isagenix, Beach Body, Body by Vie and the list goes on. Each message is beautifully crafted with a compliment and then a suggestion that I would be perfect for a product and an opportunity to have increased income.

I’ve politely declined them all.

With that being said- I feel the role I have created here on this podcast is to provide information, knowledge and tips on living your best life and so I wanted to explore the subject more and not be totally closed off to certain products. I was introduced to a beautiful and incredibly warm woman Dr. Delrae Messer a few months ago and knew she would be perfect person to explain, share and inform us on the world of Isagenix.

Who better to learn from then one of their top leaders and performers who earned 6 figures within her first 6 months with the company. Having spoken to her I know its not about closing the deal but rather about building relationships and a community.

Breifly, A former track and field athlete, Delrae went on to become a chiropractor while also creating and developing her own neutrocitcal line. She walked away from it all to join Isagenix. A single mother of 2, Dr. DelRae Messer, is CEO of Free Life Global, a global health and wellness company committed to helping people transform their lives through nutrition solutions.

We hit it off within two seconds of meeting and felt like the energy in the room could change the world for the better- thats always a great feeling to have :)

I am finally tackling the topic of CBD of this podcast.

Are you cannabis curious? The more I explore the discussions around CBD, Cannabis and medical marijuana the more I am intrigued. Autism, anxiety, ADHD, insomnia, PTSD, seizures, pain relief, parkinsons, ageing, gut health, sex drive- all seeing the use of CBD as treatment for patients of all ages. Its confusing, its scary and it's an adjustment to how many of us think.

Dr. Mary Clifton, an internal medicine doctor with over 20 years in both hospital and private practice. A published author, national speaker recognized CBD and Cannabis Expert and has the incredible website CBD And Cannabis Info. Dot Com. The website is almost like an encyclopedia of wealth- which talks about everything you can possibly think of when it comes to this topic. She is the Science and Research Editor for Cannabis Magazine and the Medical Director for Live Well Naturally….plus looking for ways to cook with CBD – she's got a cookbook ready for that as well.

Her scientific knowledge is outstanding and I am grateful she took the time to explain, discuss and break things down for us. Please take the time to look through her material and website and also the products and companies she feels are going about this the right way. The website is overloaded with material.

We all tend to learn at a different pace, whether its to walk or read or even ride a bike. Eventually we all get there, but at our own pace.

When it comes to education we retain information differently, so one student will have an easier or a tougher time over another.

As children we tend to develop our own strategies to cope with certain situations and circumstances- even though we don’t quite know we are doing it at the time. These strategies, good and bad, flow in and out of our lives…

As the school year gets into full gear- in addition to the normal trials and tribulations of adolescence throw in stigmas, like ADD, ADHD, intellectual disability, learning disorders, and autism spectrums.

Pile on top of that, anxiety, depression, bullying, identity issues and you just want to bubble wrap your kids and protect them from harsh realities.

Joining us today is Everett Lawrence Adams a clinical and educational psychologist. EL as he is known, is looking to share ideas, philosophies and methods he is using to help our youth thrive from the most difficult of situations, methods like mental health mood and music.

School’s back in session, and with that lunches, after school snacks, breakfast options, sports and activities.

Now let’s throw in the approaching cooler weather, colds, flues, anxiety and stress of the schedules and I know I would rather stay in bed.

We are crossing off a few things on the podcast checklist today: From snacks and meal prep to essential oils for sleep, stress and focus as well as immune boosting foods for the fall. We also hit on a very personal and important topic when it comes to eating disorders.

Holistic Nutritionist Lindsay Mustard is making a mark for herself on the health and wellness scene, providing woman who are struggling with emotional eating and self confidence to help them craft the body and life of their dreams- Its comes with passion and experience.

If you are a teacher or a coach- this podcast is a must listen! If you wish to mentor the next generation- listen to this podcast and if you see yourself as a future leader- learn from a person who inspires many.

Pierre Lafontaine is not a household name in the traditional sense. He doesn’t have million dollar sports contracts despite the fact he’s always been on top of his game for decades. He has worked with the world’s top swimmers and cyclists. Guided the countries top student athletes and worked hand in hand with national and Olympic athletes from around the world. What’s unique about Pierre’s ability to move within the sports circles is that he is doing it as well with politicians and business leaders. In the name of sports, Pierre has seen it all.

This isn’t a podcast about training the countries elite athletes- it's about how we as people /humans are meant to be active and healthy both physically and mentally. How sports is supposed to be about moving and training our bodies, being focused, working together as team and enjoying success. Getting a nation active and healthy is a massive task- but people are laying the foundation. The National Health And Fitness Foundation is made up of members of parliament, senators, and government leaders to help Canadians lead healthy, active lifestyles. A National health and fitness day actually exists- did you know that? Maybe that wasn’t covered in the phys-ed class we didn’t have to take, Or, maybe it wasn’t mentioned as kids are playing a single sport from the time they are born with a parent dreaming of them going pro one day.

Pierre takes us through what it means to lead by example, offers ideas and opportunities to families who can't afford to "play" and emphasizes why its our responsibility to take action for the next generation.

"You should sit in meditation for 20 minutes a day unless you are too busy...then you should sit for an hour" (Old Zen Saying)

Don't laugh - you knew it was coming. Podcast topic this week is on Meditation :)

It seems over the last 80 episodes- every medical practitioner, and health and wellness expert continues to emphasize healthy diet, exercise, self care and meditation/slash mindfulness. To put a personal spin on this- I was eating healthy, exercising daily and finding time for self care- I figured 3 out of 4 wasn't bad- or so I thought. In fact what I have realized is that the fourth component of meditation and mindfulness may in fact be the most important of them all. How we think and react to the world and what our subconscious is really doing to us has a massive impact on our lives.

So lets dive deeper into this subject and get all of you similarly stubborn people like me out there listening with a new perspective. Joining me on this podcast is former psychotherapist, acclaimed author, podcaster and Younion meditation founder Natashay Grey. Natasha’s Conscious Living Podcast found itself on the iTunes new and noteworthy list back in 2016. Her new meditation studio is a place of skill building, connection and contemplation. Meditation came to Natasha later in life, when it seemed that every medication, pill and anti depressant was failing to provide her the life she desired. We talk about her moment of awareness- how the simple act of breathing can really change everything and how she wants people to leave her studio. We talk about meditation apps, guided meditations and simply taking a moment to sit.

What I respect most about the game of golf- are its nuisances- and that this game above all others reveals a persons true character - their integrity, honesty and sportsmanship. You cheat at golf- you cheat at life.

Don’t panic, this podcast is not all about golf. Kevin Haime, who grew up around the game has built an incredible business with his wife Lisa. A player himself, Kevin describes the lessons learned growing up on a golf course and how the sport eventually led him to his own business. He talks about the partnership with Lisa, the constant need for growth and expansion and the "Disney" experience. He has great stories of experiences both on and off the course and we spend quite a bit of time talking about the junior programs he has created. Philanthropy took on a different meaning when Kevin created the "Kids To The Course" program. We talk about the influence sport has on a child and why this program has provided a new life for some of the kids who have participated in it. Business, mentorship, family, health and wellness all covered in our chat.

Cancer Coaching!

One in two Canadian are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. One in four are expected to die. It is the leading cause of death for Canadians, however in recent years the death rates have decreased. That's the positive side.

It’s a disease that affects us all since we likely know someone who is fighting it, has beaten it or has lost someone to it.

In the US, cancer care expenditures are now in the 1.5 billion dollar range. Much of this has to do with treatments and adopted standard of care. The medical aspect is one thing, but what about everything else that goes with it.

There are a range of issues like: understanding diagnosis, how to prepare for side effects of treatment, how to talk to family, how to handle leaving/returning to work, how to prepare for end of life, the right questions to ask their oncologist, strategies to cope, navigating the healthcare system etc. etc.

This is where cancer coaching comes into play. Joining me on the podcast from the Maplesoft Cancer Center is Cancer Coach Patty Barrett- Robillard.

I found the information to be valuable, emotional, educational and also uplifting. Patty does a great job at taking us through the process and if you know someone who is in need of their services I hope you connect with them. http://www.ottawacancer.ca

Meet Johanna Lynn who has 20 years experience in resolving inherited family patterns and is the founder of The Family Imprint Institute. A former clinical hypnotherapist she focuses now on "Epigenetics".

Ask Yourself:

Have you ever had difficulty trying to explain why you feel a certain way, have unexplained sadness, or depression? Do you have self destructive behavior or continually see the same results in failed relationships? Are you dealing with chronic illness?

Some of this could be indicators for inherited family trauma. And this is the focus of my podcast with Johanna. Our genes and our family history play such a vital role in how we view or see things, whether we intend to be a certain way or not. We have an imprint in our genetic code and its up to us individually to understand it and change it if we wish to change from generation to generation. The science behind it is fascinating and Johanna's voice will have you wanting to sit in her chair divulging your family history and your own life experiences.

This week I talk with my former colleague veteran radio broadcaster Steve Warne. Until just recently, for 31 years Steve set his alarm clock for 4 am and made his way into the radio booth for the morning drive.

He made a real name for himself as the popular host of TGOR, three guys on the radio on TSN 1200 for the last 19 years. Throughout the years, Steve has been an advocate for raising funds and awareness around Autism, something his son Michael was diagnosed with by the age of 2. The father and son duo have teamed up for their blog and YouTube channel Adventures In Autism .

Now at 52, and with an unexpected departure from the show due to layoffs, Steve has launched his own podcast called “The Steve Warne Project”…

The first half of our podcast is focused on his journey into radio, the challenges of the industry, his passion for sports and what made his job so unique. The second half of the podcast focuses on life raising a child who has autism. Steve is very candid as we chat, touching on the everyday challenges, the early years of education, awareness and fundraising and takes us through the stages of acceptance. His outlook on the daily adventures he has with his son Michael are beautiful. Let me introduce you to Dr. Nemanja Baletic aka Dr. Nemo. The founder of Oneness Medicine is a former Ottawa U Gee Gee's basketball player whose holistic approach to medicine has led him to study around the world and at some of the top medical institutions. With Harvard on his resume, Dr. Andrew Weil as his mentor and his name on published medical papers Dr. Nemo is a true game changer. We talk about medicine from a very different perspective which goes far beyond actual medication to the healing powers of meditation, food, love, environment and visualization. Dr. Nemo discusses the tools he used as an athlete to help shape the way he studied and performed in difficult medical situations. In addition to continued athletic aspirations, he also models, and considers himself an amateur filmmaker. Name it, he's done it. I was in awe of the energy and passion he has for integrative medicine and his ability to share it with others in a way that makes them want to change for the better. For future med students this is a must listen and for anyone who believes in the power of healing this is a great one for you.

No headshot required! I sit down with Smyth Casting President Ilona Smyth. I was reacquainted with Ilona a few weeks ago when I was asked by a friend to help out as an "extra" on a set of a movie being made here in Ottawa. I had just finished taping a podcast and figured it would be a fun new adventure and something to check off a "life experiences" list. Ilona had four films in production at the time and I realized she was in charge of a well oiled machine. In our short conversation I learned hat she was raising a young son on her own, had battled a mental crisis that changed the direction of her life and was making her mark in a fascinating industry. I was inspired by her journey and felt others could be too. We don't talk about fitness regiments or eating patterns - this is about dealing with adversity and life's curve balls and finding your way through. She is armed with talent and enjoys finding the talent in others. She has a way of finding that 'diamond in the rough".

If you have any interest in the film and television industry you can check out Ilona's website as well as facebook page for more informaiton.

This week's guest is Parent Consultant & Child Behavior Specialist Sylvia Corzato. Sylvia is the founder of Success in Steps. Her company provides help to overwhelmed and frustrated parents who seek to spend less time on challenges and behaviors and more time enjoying their family. We talk about strategies for implementing rules and expectations. Autism plays a big role in her previous work with CHEO and it became a platform to help her see the need for continued work with parents.

Tantrums, Bedtime, Video Games, Phones, Social Media, Eating, Discipline...we try and hit on all of it!

I laugh that growing up- if my mom was counting to three and she got past two and a half I was in major trouble. I've tried to implement the same discipline with my girls....with little success :)

What's for dinner? The most dreaded question in my household. Are there the right groceries in the fridge? Which one of us has the energy to make it? We should be better organized and prepped but its not in our forte or interest most days. I imagine we are not alone in these sentiments. The pressure, the work, the time commitment, the agony of trying to keep it interesting. Should eating be this complicated and emotional. Well, realistically eating has so many emotional components to it. It offers us solace, comfort, love, memories. It can be therapeutic, it can also be complicated.

It doesn't seem to be complicated at all for my podcast guest this week, food expert, recipe creator, cooking show host & food journalist Paula Roy.

She is at home in the kitchen and wants to be able to share her love of cooking, recipes, food prep and outlook with you. Paula and I talk about her process of creating recipes and how she can taste a meal even before cooking it. What I loved most were the tricks and tips in the kitchen! Integrate, Empower, Recover...

It is estimated approx 21% of the population will meet the criteria for addiction in their lifetime. We associate this typically with drugs and alcohol but it extends far beyond that with food, sex, gambling etc. For some, its a foreign concept and yet for others it hits much closer to home. Addiction has the ability to ruin lives on every level and yet even at the darkest of times, there is hope. Hope for many, is all they need.

At the age of 19, Gord Garner's drug addiction had moved far beyond the occasional weekend bender to hard core daily use of crack cocaine. By 24, death seemed like a much more realistic future than anything else. And yet, Gord continued to beat the odds. At the age of 56, after decades of being in and out of treatment centers, between jobs, homes and relationships- the possibility of living clean seemed within reach. Nine years later, Gord is the man behind CAPSA. The Community Addictions Peer Support Association helping others who suffer from substance abuse disorder. CAPSA has a vision where individuals affected by addiction have access to support when seeking help without stigma or discrimination- where recovery focused services and support are based on collaborations and partnerships and where everyone is welcome. This week’s podcast with Parmees Yazdanyar is going to blow you away. Her title? Functional Medicine & Peal Performance Speaker & Consultant. I just loved our chat and wanted to feed off the energy and the vibe she gave off.

With a background in integrative medicine, behavioral neuroscience and positive psychology, Parmees combines the most relevant strategies from all three fields to create a three-pillar system that helps high-achievers bio/neuro-hack their way to improved energy, motivation, productive output and overall quality of life. I get that this sounds a little overwhelming and complex but her information and explanation for human behavior is bang on and there were clear take-aways from the podcast. This is about letting go of the things that control you, and allowing ourselves to break out of patterns that are limiting our potential. Parmees is young and passionate and I think will become a powerhouse in this field.

Dr. Rob Gauvreau has spent the last 35 years dedicated to the practice of sports medicine. I admit, my athletic and active family has often visited his practice for our sports related injuries and rehab. As you will hear, he specializes in the care of muscle and skeletal injuries and conditions that affect the active person. He focuses on leading edge regenerative solutions like platelet rich plasma and guided injections to name a few. He has worked for the OHL, CFL, and NHL as well as a number of universities and other sports institutions. He is a big believer in quality movement. We talk honestly about his outlook on rehabilitation, movement, exercise and the “sitting disease”. His focus is always on getting to the underlying reason for the injuries rather than the quick fix of rehab machines to do the wok. That sore shoulder, lower back pain, and arthritic hip are meant to feel better. For more information check out their website http://www.optimizeottawa.com

Personalized Fitness Founder Tanya Robertson joins me in studio this week....Tanya ( who nicknames herself a "Gypsy" trainer) and I figure we connected about 25 years ago and our lives have overlapped in a number of ways. Mention personalized workouts, group training sessions, yoga, meditation, nutrition, boot camps, workshops, retreats and Tanya can easily check each one off the list- a number of times. Her passion for health, wellness, fitness and self care continues to be her driving force and a reason why she was a popular contributor to my "Today's The Day" segment back on CTV Morning Live. Our podcast takes on a few different story lines one of which led to "fermentation". I admit, I didn't think we would invest much time on this topic, but the more we chatted, the more intrigued I was. You might find you will be making a few different purchases next week after listening to this one. Movement- daily meditation, outdoor activity and nature are all major factors we hit on over the hour as well.

I also had an interesting conversation with the multi talented and super diverse Tuan Nguyen. I found it impossible to find the proper title to make his introduction based on the fact he wears many hats. Chief Health Genie, A Gangsta Budha, Master Hugger, BizDad, Thought Leader, Speaker, Connector and the list goes on. For all you dads out there, this one is for you- as we focus on issues affecting men/dads, sometimes overlooked by moms. We talk about the changing dynamics for an entrepreneurial mindset, parenting roles, expectations and being “present” in the upbringing of our kids. This embraces self care, sacrifices, risk taking and so much more.

Before leaving for March Break, I invited my husband, Professional Sports Artist Tony Harris into the studio. I will be honest, this discussion could have gone a number of different ways and I kind of let the stories guide the way. I think Tony may have been more nervous than our first date! We talk about a private school upbringing at Lakefield College School where his dad was a teacher, sports as a way of staying out of trouble, his passion for hockey, then football, and eventually his love of art. We talk about the athletes and the paintings he was been commissioned to paint and life in general. It’s a mixture of professional guidance, parenting traps and a deeper look into our lives. Its something a little different and I hope you appreciate or find our quirks entertaining.

Sometimes, a product /idea comes about in the most interesting of ways! Let me introduce you to Alysen Clark. Alysen works in nutritional neuroscience and her company developed a product named AMIE. AMIE is an acronym for “Anxiety, Mood, Irritability and Energy.” Nutritional Neuroscience is the study of how carbohydrates, proteins, fats, supplements vitamins, minerals and additives can alter brain chemistry, cognition and behavior. The conversation is quite fascinating as it moves from a scientific background to real life application. What was originally designed as a fitness supplement showed significant change in mental health, mood and anxiety. This podcast will appeal to anyone who is struggling to find the right balance of feeling good, energized, happy and productive. Alysen talks about her own health struggles as well as well as the delicate balance of science, research and business for what ended up being a true passion project.

Its always easy to get a podcast conversation flowing with my podcast guests simply because they are always so passionate about the subject matter and the story. However, when you add in a journalist with the ability to talk off the cuff- it’s a whole different story. I loved having CTV News Anchor Graham Richardson in studio to tape this week’s podcast. He has some great stories about starting out in the business, why he is so passionate about story telling, the steady climb up the ladder and what the days entail. He talks candidly about fatherhood, raising his boys and finally being comfortable in the anchor chair. What I really loved was the time we spent dedicated to his 365 days of active living. If you are following Graham on social media you have seen his daily updates of being physically active despite the temperature outside or the activity. We talk about this shift for him and why it’s become part an integral part of his everyday life.

Rob Stamper is not a doctor, nutritionist, trainer or wellness practitioner- but he does have quite the story that I felt might resonate with some of you. Rob suffered a heart attack at the age of 46. Maybe I am just extra sensitive when it comes to “Heart Health” because I lost my dad Jeffrey to a massive heart attack the day after he turned 57. It was also two weeks before my wedding- and my world was shaken to its core. I truly believe had I been more aware to his “indigestion” or growing mid section or lack of exercise I would still have my dad with me today. Rob reminded me of my dad- since they are both chefs. We are just wrapping up Heart Health Month and I wanted to make sure we got this podcast in. At one point in his life Rob was active and sporty but a military injury limited his mobility and with it the drive to remain active. Then the years of deep-fried food, smoking and a hectic work schedule caught up. This podcast is the story of recovery and rebuilding and we talk a lot about food- lots and lots of food. Rob who I mentioned is a chef has a new project in development which is called “Sumpna Eat” Something to eat with real skills for real food. Rob has developed recipes and tips which limit the amount of salt and “forbidden” foods for heart disease patients. These recipes really apply to everyone- He has some unique recipes which bring the emotional connection people have with food to the for front and he helps satiate them.

This week you will meet Exercise Physiologist Kalessy Twigley. I have known Kalessy from the gym for years. I seriously drool at her amazing physique and admire how hard she trains at the gym. I never would have thought that she deals with an auto-immune disorder and that she had a near death experience as a result of her health. She was a first year student at Dalhousie when they discovered a serious hole in her bowels. We talk about finding a “new normal” when it comes to your health and we talk about the challenges she enjoys with her clients who are often dealing with health issues and setbacks. Kalessy who has Crohn's Disease also talks about nutrition in her house- especially with her daughter dealing with Lyme’s disease. And if you have ever wondered about the carnivorous diet- she explains it all, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Without this present in our relationships we often feel isolation and ongoing disconnection. As for this week’s podcast – let me introduce you to Julie Anderton, the founder of Studio 1 Pilates. Julie and I actually met in middle school and went to SRB High School together as well. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I realized we were living very similar lives during those years – school, training, homework and then bed. While my time was spent in the gym as a gymnast, hers was spent in a dance studio. We both ended up studying in the States. Her dance career led her to work and travel, love and marriage. It also allowed her the tools to re-establish herself in the health and wellness industry once the love and marriage fell apart. Julie dedicated herself to the study of Pilates and has built a beautiful studio here in Ottawa. We talk about how movement and stretching is critical as we age, why posture plays such an important part in our everyday lives and why she still believes we need to dance like no one is watching.

My podcast this week is with Leslie Scott from the Distress Centre of Ottawa. We felt it was timely for her to come in and speak about the reality surrounding the calls the Centre receives at this time of year and what it’s like to be on the other end, answering those calls. The Centre runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — even during natural disasters like the 1998 ice storm and the recent tornados when power was out for days. Leslie is able to take us through the types of callers, situations, and outreach that occur on any given day, and how they are able to offer support. It’s an incredibly difficult time of the year for many. We also spend quite a bit of time talking about the recruitment, training, and selection of volunteers. At times during this episode I had to sit and reflect on the courage it takes people to reach out and ask for help, and the responsibility taken on by the person answering the call.

What I love about this podcast is that we hit on so many storylines that connect with people. Climbing our own mountains, business start ups, exercise, movement, functional movement, goal setting, burnouts, the list goes on. We go through some of her favorite exercises, get a few tips on new gadgets and get the real scoop on what “functional movement” really is.

My podcast this week is with my dear friend Séan McCann. Séan talks candidly about growing up in Newfoundland, the abuse he suffered by a priest as a teenager, the creation of Great Big Sea, his downfall with alcohol and the day he hit rock bottom. From there Séan takes us through the journey of his recovery, of facing his truth and the difficult reality of one needing to “put in the work” when it comes to living one’s truth. We talk about mental health, music as therapy and how his guitar “Old Brown” has been by his side through it all. I realized as well, through a little research that I knew more Great Big Sea songs than I thought and that hearing him play his own songs, with deep meaning, can be incredibly therapeutic. I hope you enjoy the podcast as much as I did. We all battle our own demons, but Séan puts you in a head space to want to find your peace.

I was incredibly entertained this week while chatting with, chef, sommelier and entrepreneur, Stephen Beckta. My thinking behind bringing him in as a guest was to talk about the relationship we have with food, the food experience, the changing food industry and of course tips from a chef and sommelier. What I found, was that this award-winning restauranteur has an incredibly compelling and entertaining story. He takes us on quite the journey around the world, stopping at a few destinations, following love, women, heartbreak, wine and food. A little luck, a ton of critical failures and the passion to have his own restaurant “family” is what landed him where he is – ranked amongst Canada’s best!

This week, I speak with Daphne Ballard and boxing coach Scott Whitteker. Scott co-founded the Heart & Crown Presents Fight for the Cure. The event is Ottawa’s only white collar charity boxing gala. All proceeds from the night support the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation’s unique cancer coaching, clinical trials and ground-breaking cancer research programs. This year, marks a new era as women are stepping into the ring for the first time. Two women, in their 40’s, best friends, mothers and former teammates are going head to head. They have never boxed before nor even considered this as a bucket list item. This story becomes about stepping out of one’s comfort zone and finding the courage to try something different. While Lisa Langevin couldn’t join us for the podcast, her best friend and now boxing rival Daphne Ballard did. We dive into the training and transformation of these “every day people” into courageous boxers and hope to inspire some of you to try something different.

This week’s podcast is with trainer, speaker, athlete and founder of Greco Fitness, Tony Greco. Tony has just launched his book Strong Mind, Lean Body. Despite having known Tony for almost two decades, I learned a lot about him in this podcast and how his background shaped who he would become and gave him the drive to achieve his goals. We talk about the evolution of the way people train and workout and how he shaped the incredibly popular “lean and fit” classes. His “celebrity trainer” title has given him access to new clients but the foundation has always remained the same. The way we eat, what we consume, how we train and the way we live will always shape how we look and feel.

This week on the podcast, we chat with Exec Health President Sanjay Shah. Sanjay was incredibly honest and forthcoming in what works with our system and where we can improve. He praises many aspects of what the Canadian government is able to provide. With that being said, he gives us an interesting perspective on how to take certain aspects into your own hands. I learned far more in this podcast than I expected too and hope you are able to ask yourself some of the same questions I asked myself when we were done.

This week we talk personal safety with former Canadian Spy Adam Nesrallah. He no longer works with our government agency, but has some interesting viewpoints on how we need to look after our own personal safety – from walking home at night, to creating better passwords and explaining why we are all susceptible to fraud in this digital age. I’ll be honest – some of his suggestions will have you wanting to toss him over a bridge (like switching to a flip phone) but other safety tips are great reminders for anyone. Go easy on him, he really can hurt you with his pinky finger!

While the title of “Self Love Mom” does come into play, this is really meant for anyone who has dealt with or is dealing with burnout, exhaustion and trying to be everywhere and pleasing everyone at all times. Something has got to give and it’s about giving ourselves permission to let some things fall through the cracks. She has some great recommendations for those currently struggling and tips on when to realize you are in trouble.

Description: My podcast this Thursday is with world renown conductor Alexander Shelley. Alex’s podcast was an inspiring conversation and I learned so much about the world of classical music. I have always felt a deep kinship with musicians, who like athletes, train and practice for hours (to the point of exhaustion) looking to become the best. It requires a deep dedication to the craft and a passion to live it. Very few make it to the top. Alexander and I talk about his unique childhood in London, why he chose conducting over playing, how music transforms us and why there is a purpose to every note on the page. Our main focus is on preparation and how it becomes the critical factor for success, not just in music or athletics but in life. His podcast comes full circle as about 6 months ago I had his wife Zoe on my podcast. Zoe spoke about her amazing experience through the casting, training, and finally shooting of Wonder Woman. At the time, she had just announced she was pregnant with their first child. As timing would have it, Alexander and I met last week to tape his podcast. The podcast was underscored by the anticipation their baby boy would arrive within the next two weeks. Their son, Sasha arrived two days later. Congrats to both Zoe and Alex! I can’t wait to meet him!

This week, we chat with Money Coach, Judith Cane about our relationship with money. If you are looking for investment advice for your portfolio or the next big stock to invest in – you won’t find it in the podcast, but what you will find is an honest discussion about how money influences our decisions and our relationships. Judith offers some great advice on how to start teaching our children about the concept of earning, saving and giving money. She explains why not understanding these concepts early affects our decisions later in life, our habits and our downfalls. She describes the work she does with her clients and why real cash is still the key to success. I definitely have shifted my mindset after our conversation!

On May 9th, enjoying a backyard BBQ with friends at the home of NHL player and Ottawa Senator, Cody Ceci, the unimaginable occurred and a freak accident had 24 year old Hana Engel going up in flames. Doctors and family were unsure if she would survive. She woke up from her coma four weeks after the accident to a new nightmare. While this podcast touches on the moment Hana went up in flames, we focus on her process, her treatment and her recovery. Hana shares her experience of being in her coma and how her background in yoga helped ease her way through the rehab. She is incredibly brave, vulnerable and honest in our talk... I am in awe of the talent and passion of doctors, medical advancements and technology. I hope you enjoy listening to Hana as much as I did and can take something from her messages. I definitely did.

This week on the podcast, I had a wake-up call. We talk hormones with Dr. Tanya Manikkham, a naturopathic doctor with Nutrichem. Our health can be attributed to a number of factors and I got quite lesson about the effects of hormones – whether a lack of them or too many of them in our bodies. Menopause of course became a big theme but we discuss overall symptoms of hormone imbalance and how it is way more common then we think (when we aren’t going through menopause). Dr. Manikkham has some great advice, tips and concerns she shares. This podcast isn’t just for women, as men are affected just as much as they age.

This week, my guest is former Canadian and World Cup Freestyle skiing champion Elisa Kurylowitz. Her story is quite fascinating – from her quick rise on the freestyle circuit, to traveling the world representing Canada, and to failing to qualify her Olympic Year. Her life spun into an incredibly dark hole after missing the Olympic Games, from which it took her a few years to dig out. Her story is about wins and losses, losing oneself(especially to food and booze) and having the courage to crawl her way back into a new life with a new outlook. I really enjoyed our chat and her honesty.

This week, the stakes are high as REDBLACKS head coach Rick Campbell volunteers himself in the hot seat. Today's podcast is just hours before the team kicks off their home opener at TD Place. If you are looking for a roster rundown, game strategy, quarterback controversy or game plan for the year – you might be disappointed. While football is the underlying storyline, Coach Campbell is opens up about growing up moving from one city to the next, following wherever his father was coaching the game. He talks about the continuous mind games his profession demands and why the most talented player isn’t always top choice. We talk about his perspective on health, fitness and nutrition outside of the game as well as the changes required of the players still in it. I should have charged a $250.00 therapy fee, instead I’m hoping we can get in session number two over time. Best of luck with the upcoming season Coach!

This week, my guest is etiquette expert Julie Blais Comeau. As the world was engulfed in the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle this past weekend, it seemed fitting that this would be an ideal time to reflect on the social graces and customs, not only of royalty, but in our everyday lives. How we interact and communicate in social settings and in business dealings is an integral part of our success. It can make or break future employment, a romantic encounter and even our everyday friendships. How we are treated and how we treat others goes beyond our parent’s instructions in the school playground. We are connected more with our devices now, than we are with the people sitting across from us. Julie helps us understand the history of why it’s still important to follow some of the guidelines and helps us ensure we are putting our best foot forward.

Podcasting is a new craft for me and I am learning something new every time I’m behind the microphone. I was a sponge soaking in the information from bestselling author Jody Mitic. The soldier, turned amputee, turned reality TV star, turned politician has quite the story to tell. He was awesome, but I should have had a shorter leash. I must warn you that we hit on topics I didn’t expect, got off topic more than once and used language unbecoming for TV. It’s in need of a part two and three!

This week, I figured it would be quite fitting with Mother’s Day around the corner to have my mom Agnes Laing on the show. This show however, is not all about mothers and Mother's Day. My mom is a trailblazer when it comes to amateur sport and business. She has built one of the largest gymnastics facilities in the country and has touched the lives of thousands of children in the city. She has kids coming to classes whose grandparents she coached. It’s quite remarkable to see and hear the impact she has had on individuals, many of whom have gone on to excel in other sports, but more importantly with life in general. She has seen the shift over the last 45 years of the role sport plays in the lives of families. She talks about the role of a “coach” and the relationship between coach and athlete and the investment they make with one another. We also hit on what its like for coaches and athletes when they are related and trying to find balance in their home lives and on the sports stage (my mom was my coach…and therapy was needed).

I think in total I dressed up as Wonder Woman three times for CTV Morning Live. Twice for our Halloween shows and another for Comic Con. I have no desire to take on the role again but I will admit to being a huge fan of the movie. With that being said, I was totally taken back when I found out that Zoe Shelley, the wife of NAC Music Director Alexander Shelley, was involved in the filming. Being in a blockbuster movie had never been on Zoe’s wish list, nor had she ever envisioned herself sword fighting with her new best friends. The former cellist and IT employee took her own leap of faith that landed her an experience of a lifetime. I hope you enjoy her company as much as I did. What I found interesting when Mayor Jim Watson came by the Extension Marketing studios for our podcast was that he joked that he was nervous. I had no political questions on the agenda, no platforms to cover, no election promises to check off and no request for an update on the LRT. I figured this was an easy home run for my former colleague. I loved him even more for saying that he was nervous, though, because he knew the focus was on wellness, balanced lifestyle, health and fitness and he didn’t want to fail miserably. Granted, he isn’t lacing up the sneakers to go for a daily run, adding protein to his balanced diet (I’m being sarcastic there) or managing 8 hours of sleep a night (he has sleep apnea). In fact, he gets an ‘F’ on all aspects. But while he hasn’t always given himself the best chance for his own health, he has made an impact for other peoples lives. We chat about a Smoke Free Ontario, athlete funding, access to recreation and the list goes on.
