Guard the Deposit
1 Timothy 6:20-21 - Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding irreverent and empty speech and contradictions from what is falsely called knowledge. By professing it, some people have departed from the faith. Grace be with you all.
Summary: We have a call to guard the deposit that has been entrusted to us: right believing, teaching and living out the Gospel. We do this by defending the deposit (through deflecting or engaging) and advancing the deposit (through staying the course and sharing the truth in love).
Take Hold - 1 Timothy 6:12b-19
Focus Verse: 1 Timothy 6:12b, …Take hold of eternal life to which you were called…
As believers, we have a call to take hold and experience the Eternal Christ. The problem is: the World has a hold on you because you won’t let go of it! Release your grip by changing your attitude, your actions and your aspirations. Take hold of the eternal Christ by confessing Him as Lord and living in a way that honors and glorifies him.
Flee From Sin
Focus Verse: 1 Timothy 6:11 - But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
How do we flee from sin? We must be able to identify sin. We must desire to flee from sin. We must actually flee from sin.
Malachi
Focus Verse: Malachi 3:1 - “I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.
When the Lord exposes us in our sin, we can attempt to fix it, hide from it, question it, or ignore it. But we need to humbly submit before the Great High Priest, so that we can boldly come before His throne of grace.
Haggai & Zechariah
Focus Verses: Haggai 2:9 - “The final glory of this house will be greater than the first,” says the Lord of Armies. “I will provide peace in this place”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.
Zechariah 9:9 - Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout in triumph, Daughter Jerusalem! Look, your King is coming to you; he is righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Haggai and Zechariah are working together to prophesy to a broken nation, who has been in exile, and to get them to rebuild the temple. Why? Because the temple was the mark that they were the people of God. But these prophets communicate a larger message: To be God’s people isn’t simply about a building, it’s about God’s presence - and they can only enjoy God’s presence through the Messiah to come.
Zephaniah
Focus Verse: Zephaniah 3:17 - The Lord your God is in your midst, a Mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by his love; He will exult over you with loud singing.
Our King keeps His promises. We learn from Zephaniah that God promises to joyfully love His children, defeat all of our oppressors, and to gather and restore us.
Habakkuk
Focus Verses: Habakkuk 3:17-19 - Though the fig tree does not bud and there is no fruit on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the flocks disappear from the pen and there are no herds in the stalls, 18 yet I will celebrate in the Lord; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation! 19 The Lord my Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like those of a deer and enables me to walk on mountain heights!
Three Truths We Learn from Habakkuk: 1) God is always aware and always permits the evil in this world; 2) God is always actively against evil in this world; 3) The righteous will live by faith and wait on the Lord.
Nahum - Our God is Our Warrior
Focus Verse: Nahum 1:7 - The Lord is good, a stronghold in a day of distress; He cares for those who take refuge in him.
In Nahum, we see God as the Divine Warrior. Because He never changes, He is a Warrior in our salvation, in our everyday life, and in the last days.
Micah – Hope in Repentance
Focus Verse: Micah 6:8 - Mankind, he has told each of you what is good and what it is the Lord requires of you: to act justly, to love faithfulness, and to walk humbly with your God.
Sermon Summary: Through Micah, we learn that God desires a life of obedience and worship. When we fail to do that, He is faithful to forgive us when we repent from our ways and walk with Him.
Jonah - The reluctant, racist and disobedient prophet
Focus verse: Jonah 4:4 - The Lord asked, “Is it right for you to be angry?”
Sermon Recap: Through this “retelling” of the story of Jonah, we look at the messages impact on those who are like Nineveh and those like Jonah.
Obadiah - Edom’s Pride and Arrogance
Focus verses: Obadiah 1:3-4 - Your arrogant heart has deceived you, you who live in clefts of the rock in your home on the heights, who say to yourself, “Who can bring me down to the ground?” 4 Though you seem to soar like an eagle and make your nest among the stars, even from there I will bring you down. This is the Lord’s declaration.
Edom’s pride led to their downfall. Pride and arrogance are the result of a heart that has denied God’s grace and God’s work.
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance…
Amos – Let Justice Flow
Focus Verse: Amos 5:14-15a - Pursue good and not evil so that you may live, and the Lord, the God of Armies, will be with you as you have claimed. Hate evil and love good; establish justice in the city gate.
Sermon Summary: Believers have a call to live out the mercy and grace of God to others – we have a call to seek justice and pursue righteousness. The truth is that complacency and self-indulgence blinds us to injustice and invalidates our worship.
Joel
Focus Verse: Joel 2:27-28a - “You will know that I am present in Israel and that I am the Lord your God, and there is no other. My people will never again be put to shame. After this I will pour out my Spirit on all humanity.”
Sermon Summary: The Day of the Lord is one of the Lord’s judgment, no sin will be go unpunished. But the Day of the Lord can turn to retribution and restoration through genuine repentance and embracing the Spirit. May we be people who believe in God’s judgment so much, that we embrace His only way of salvation: through His Son Jesus.
2 Peter 1:5, For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge…
Major Messages from the Minor Prophets
Hosea
Focus Verse: Hosea 6:6 - For I desire faithful love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
Sermon Recap: Every time we sin, we are choosing to cheat on the Lord. Therefore, we must believe in His love and grace, repent from our adultery, and pursue Him in obedience.

Title: Help! I Need Somebody! Passage: Psalm 121
Review Questions
-What type of Psalm is Psalm 121? What was its significance in Israel’s worship of the Lord? How does this type of Psalm correlate to today’s Christian?
-What types of help are described in the passage that the Lord provides? How do these types of help correlate to today’s Christian journey with the Lord in our everyday lives?
-Why is it so hard for us sometimes to look first and foremost to the Lord for help? How can we begin to train ourselves to look to the Lord first when we experience a crisis or need help with a situation we’re dealing with?
-Take a moment to pray and confess to the Lord your need for His help in your life. Ask Him to remind you to always look to Him first for help and not be distracted or tempted with trying to take on the burden by yourself. Finally, ask the Lord that when you face a crisis to bring to your mind all the times you have experienced help from Him or have heard stories from others that have experienced the Lord’s help. Ask for these reminders to encourage you to turn to the Lord first in times of need and to then watch and wait for the Lord to use whatever means He wants to use to provide for you.

Why Did Jesus Have to Die? Easter Midweek March 28, 2018
Focus verses: Luke 24:25-27, 25 He said to them, “How foolish and slow you are to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.
Reflection: Jesus’ death was necessary. In his death, God appeals to His Love for His creation in a way that does not compromise His holiness and justice. What does this mean? • Your sin is forgiven through the death of Jesus. • Jesus’s death is final. • Allow the power of the cross to transform you. • Praise Jesus for his death.

Focus verse: 1 Corinthians 14:3, On the other hand, the person who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouragement, and consolation.
Reflection: Prophecy is a word or revelation from God, spontaneously given to someone that should be communicated to strengthen, encourage, and/or comfort the body of Christ. We must be careful to test prophecy and call out false prophets as they misrepresent the Gospel.
Questions for testing (1 Jn 4:1-3) a prophecy: • Does the prophecy align with and is it subordinate to Scripture? • Do they prophesy the Gospel? (Do they point people to Jesus Christ and Him crucified?) • Does the prophecy build up the church? o This doesn’t mean it has to be positive, it could be a calling the church back to Scripture, but it must build the church in a biblical direction. • Do they prophesy appropriate living in the Gospel? • Is their prophecy supported and affirmed by the biblical community (fellow believers)?

Focus Verse: 1 Corinthians 11:26: For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
Reflection: In the New Testament, the word “proclaim” means “to announce broadly or make known publicly.” It is closely associated with a family of words sharing a similar root that includes “messenger” and “gospel.” As we reflect on the solemn and reverent occasion of the Lord’s Supper, how are the elements of communion a picture of the gospel? In what ways is our participation in proclaiming the death of Jesus like a public announcement of the gospel?
