Aaron means “March of 2020,” natch. 38:10 How the biggest year began. 40:45 Williamson County declares fly fishing “essential.” 44:20 Building community: weekly fly-tying, and monthly “Intro to Fly Fishing” classes. 45:22 Aaron mispronounces guide Pat Vanek’s last name. Look for Pat at Bosque Valley Fly Fishing. 46:50 Why Chris doesn’t offer free beer at the shop. (Hint: It’s not because he is opposed to a good craft beer.” 51:40 So how did the pandemic year work out for Living Waters? 52:40 The importance of not cutting pre-season orders. 53:45 “Head and shoulders, our best year ever.” 53:49 “We invented ‘social distancing.’” 55:35 “It was a bigger boom than the movie.” (“The movie,” of course, is “A River Runs Through It.”) 56:25 Chris and Aaron discuss home waters and the Central Texas fisheries. 1:00:15 Just how much public water is there in Texas? Aaron runs down the numbers. 1:01:20 Chris is a not-so-closet birder. 1:02:18 Population and development pressures on Central Texas waters, especially Brushy Creek. 1:03:08 “The fight is now over water.” 1:04:10 “All water is connected.” 1:05:16 Last year’s big conservation win on Brushy Creek. 1:07:00 The coming Tesla invasion. 1:09:00 Aaron grasps for an analogy, and inadvertently places Black’s BBQ in Luling (it’s in Lockhart, y’all). 1:09:58 New stickuhs in Chris’s shop, including two natives from Mike Williams. 1:10:37 How the Rio Grande cichlids fared in the historic deep freeze we experienced this year. 1:15:02 Check out the new “Fly Fish the Republic” sticker from our friend Nate Karnes at Remedy Provisions (remedyprovisions.com). That’s the first flag of the Republic, designed by Tejano patriot Lorenzo de Zavala in 1836. 1:16:45 What does “Fly Fish the Republic” mean, anyway? 1:19:00 #flyfishtherepublic actually raises money for native fish conservation within the borders of the historic Republic of Texas (that included some fishy parts of present-day New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming). 1:19:30 What are the similarities between Guadalupe bass and Rio Grande cutthroat, and what can fishing about the former teaches you about the latter? 1:21:35 Here’s a tip: try a size 14 damsel nymph for big Guads. 1:24:20 Where to find Living Waters Fly Fishing in person and online. 1:25:17 Oh yeah, what brands does Living Waters Fly Fishing carry? 1:26:26 Central Texas is Scientific Anglers country. (scientificanglers.com) 1:27:30 Tearful goodbyes. 1:29:02 A final tip: right now, Brushy is on fire from the Dell Diamond west through town. Go fishing!

This week we talk with fly fishing artist John Piacquadio about his passion for fly fishing and art. This our second conversation with John and it won't be the last. A very talented artist and an awesome human being! "I came up with the idea for this body of work on my porch one night thinking about what it would be like to combine a few varied, yet important aspects of my life visually. Mindfulness and meditation are something that had become important to me in the last couple of years... especially the concept of accepting the present moment as a means of reducing suffering. I had come to realize that fly fishing and fly tying had always been an active meditation that keeps me grounded in the present. No matter where my head is, fishing and tying had the ability to ground." Episode Links:

This week we have acclaimed artist, Bob White on the show to discuss art, fly fishing, and his new book Bob White is an artist and author whose work expresses a misspent youth. Instead of doing his homework, his nose was constantly in the outdoor books and sporting magazines of the day. Consequently, he has wandered between Alaska and Patagonia for over three decades as an itinerant fishing guide, looking for gainful employment. He now paints and writes for a living; which is to say, he’s still searching.   Bob’s artwork has been influenced by such masters as Homer, Sargent, and Fournier, and by more recent artists, such as Pleissner, Jacques, and Sloane. He works in watercolors, oils, pencil, and ink, and his ability to capture a fleeting moment through the eyes of a sportsman has earned him international recognition. His work hangs in the private and corporate collections of sportsmen on six continents.   Bob has guided in Southwest Alaska as a fishing and wing shooting guide for over three decades. He has also guided sportsmen in Argentina and continues to host fly fishing and wing shooting trips to Patagonia, Alaska, Kamchatka, and other destinations. The photographs that he takes of his guests frequently appear in national publications and are often used as reference material for field and stream portraits.   Bob’s recognitions include being inducted into the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Artist in 2009. He was Fly Rod & Reel magazine’s Guide of the Year in 1988. As the 1994 Artist of the Year for the Alaska State Parks Foundation, Bob produced and donated the artwork for the first Alaska State Parks Foundation print. His work has been presented twice in Fly Rod & Reel magazine’s Gallery. Bob has been featured as a guide and artist on ESPN’s “Fly Fishing the World” and “Fly Fishing America”, as well as several appearances on Ron Schara’s “Minnesota Bound”. He currently illustrates the closing column for Ducks Unlimited magazine and illustrates a regular collaborative column with John Gierach in TROUT, the magazine of Trout Unlimited. He regularly contributes artwork and the occasional story to a myriad of national and international sporting publications.   Bob and his wife, Lisa, live in Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota with their daughter Tommy, and their wonderful retrievers, Frisbee and Quill.   Picture courtesy of Tosh Brown

This week fly fishing podcast host Jeff Troutman talks with local angler and friend Kim Sears. Born and raised in Middleville, Michigan, Kim grew up on the Thornapple River fishing for bass.   “I got away from fly fishing in my 20s when I tried the bass tournament scene for a few years.  When the tournament fishing became work, I lost a lot of the interest that got me into it and went back to fly fishing and tying my own flies.” It took him a couple tries to find the right woman that understood wanting to be outdoors and fishing in general, not to mention fly fishing. She was a very quick learner and she now has more fly rods than Kim. She ties her own flies and has built her own fly rods and tying table.   A true Flygirl. “Now, well into my 50s, I’ve combined my loves of kayaking and fly fishing and I look for ways to “pay it forward”.  I’ll teach anyone that asks, how to cast, tie, or paddle.  As an active member of the USCG Auxiliary I focus primarily on paddle craft safety for not just the public, but the Auxiliary and the Coast Guard.  Most recently my wife and I have become Mentor’s with The Mayfly Project, paying it forward to take foster kids outdoors and introduce them to fly fishing, fly tying, entomology, and river ecology.  Or just to skip rocks across the river.” Kim is also the author of an e-book on Amazon  It helps new paddlers understand kayaks and the gear they need versus the gear they think they want.  Kim and his wife are also very active with the new Michigan chapter of Project Mayfly   Episode Links:   Sponsors: (discount code: remotenopressure) (discount code: RNP20)

This week Dan and Ally Earnest sit down and talk with us about fly fishing, family, and their journey into business, Whiskey Leatherworks. After meeting each other in the South East, they decided to pack up everything they own and move to Missoula with nothing more than a dream to live and thrive in the West. “In 2013, Whiskey Leatherworks began with friends brainstorming over a garage workbench, next to a keg of home brew.  Our intention then was the same as it is today. We wanted to create a leather goods company of high standards, made here in Montana. Wherever possible we wanted to use American-sourced materials.  Our products needed to be rugged and refined, reflecting our love of the American West. These goods had to pair equally with a pheasant hunting trip and sipping whiskey at the local distillery. This was to be a company that brought together family and friends through the love of common values and appreciations.”   Sponsor Links:   Discount Code (RNP20) Links:   Discount Code (REMOTE15)

As a family nurse practitioner, Shannon has spent most of her career in orthopedics and sports medicine, caring for individuals across the spectrum:  weekend warriors, high school to professional athletes, and members of the US Olympic and Paralympic teams. Prior to becoming a nurse practitioner, Shannon was an officer in the United States Air Force and served as a nurse in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. As a native of Colorado, Shannon is an avid outdoor enthusiast. She summited her first “14er” when she was only 7, and strives to spend part of each day outdoors. Shannon was introduced to fly fishing by her husband, Dr. Alex Constantinides, and together, the two have been lucky enough to travel the world fly fishing. While she enjoys the technical challenge of dry fly fishing for trout in small alpine streams, her passion is salt water fly fishing - especially bone fishing, which is her favorite! Shannon also enjoys mountain biking and kayaking (especially kayak fishing) with her husband and spending time with their fishing puppy, Brookie (like the trout). To date, Shannon will likely be the least skilled angler on the podcast, but will likely be one of the most enthusiastic! Any guide who has fished with Shannon will tell you a few things: 1) she always packs a great lunch for everyone on the boat (guides included), 2) she WILL interrogate the guide about his or her personal life (“don’t try to resist it” was a quote from one guide-turned-friend), and 3) there is a high likelihood someone is going to get tagged with one of her stray casts! Shannon has been featured in the Palm Beach Coastal Angler magazine, not just once, but twice! And, she is also known for her uncanny ability to catch the littlest of fish!  (Code RNP20 at check out)

This week, Jeff talks with Chicago native Robert Tomes about the historical in Chicago and fly fishing for Muskie! World’s Fair of 1893 brought people from around the country to the Windy City. This was the year the first ever “Open To The World Scientific Angling Tournament,” was held. This put Chicago on the map for the sport of tournament casting. Over the years, this pier and competition has drawn thousands of tourists and has helped usher in new equipment and techniques of all aspects, essentially changing the course of angling history. Today it’s changing the course of a different type: children’s history. Robert Tomes is passionate about teaching and introducing youngsters in Chicago to the joy of fly fishing and casting on this very same pier (they also use spinning gear, but we’ll let them slide).  Below you’ll find a link that gives you a lengthy history and information about the program. Muskie. A species of fish that Robert knows a lot about. You can say he wrote the book on it, because…..he did! Published by Wild River Press, Tomes book has sold many copies and has introduced unknowing anglers to the joy of fly fishing for Muskie. Tomes talks about techniques and describes in detail the behavior and aggressiveness of the allusive species. An excellent episode!

Ann Miller has been fishing her entire life, but can now say that she has been exclusively fly fishing for more than half that time. A life member of Fly Fishers International and Trout Unlimited, she decided to become more active in the Great Lakes Council of the FFI over 20 years ago, becoming editor of the now defunct newsletter, The Leader. Editing quickly lead to writing, and before long she was penning essays for other publications. Tom Helgeson encouraged her to submit her work to Midwest Fly Fishing, and soon she was writing her own bimonthly column, Natural Settings, for the magazine. Ann’s most recent project stemmed from her love of fly fishing and teaching. While teaching beginning and intermediate fly fishing schools, she became frustrated with the lack of comprehensive Midwest information on insect hatches, taxonomy, behavior, and flies to match them. An aquatic biologist, she decided to tackle the world of bugs head on, and the result is the . The field guide was published in January, 2012 by Frank Amato Publications. In addition to writing, Ann is a founder and current president of Flygirls, an organization whose purpose is to help women become involved in fly fishing. The club was founded in 1996 and continues in its purpose to teach women to fly fish as well as provide fly fishing and fly tying outings in Michigan and beyond. Michigan-born songwriter joins us for a conversation on fly fishing, music and the progression of life. The world traveler has performed internationally with artists like Melissa Etheridge, Edward McCain and John Gorka. Drew’s songwriting ability is amazing and I could go on and on about his musical accomplishments, but after we started talking I realized the interview and Drew was about so much more. Drew brings insights about life. He’s been through some crap and has come out the other side walking with a limp, but still walking. He questions life, religion and societal norms. He doesn’t see black and white, but lives in the gray and living in the gray, I believe, is the catalyst for his artistic excellence. Drew also makes custom furniture in his studio in Ada Michigan and like all of the art he creates, it’s excellent.

He currently splits his time between his native Texas Gulf coast, where he drives a tugboat, and his home near the banks of the San Gabriel River in Georgetown, Texas. When he is not working, chances are you can find him knee-deep in a stream somewhere around Austin, often with his wife and one or more of his three boys, trying like heck to become a better fly fisherman. His book " will be released by Imbrifex Books in March, 2020.  A party to celebrate its publication will be held at a fly fishing hang-out in the greater Austin area on March 3, 2020. Drinks and gourmet hors d’oeuvres will be served. All are welcome.  More information about the launch party and pre-order information will be available soon. One of the very first emails I received from a listener was from this week’s guest Aaron Reed. I wish I could copy and paste the email he sent in this blog post or maybe recall some sort of quote that was inspiring to me to move forward with the podcast, but my bad memory and less than stellar email skills have left me nothing. I suppose like most good friendships, it’s hard to remember how they started. His words of encouragement have been a salve to the wounds of this insecure podcast host who started out with no a clue to what he was doing and did not know if anyone would even listen to what he had to say. Over the last year and half Aaron and I have corresponded and he’s made introductions and recommendations for some great guests that I otherwise would not have been able to make. Thank you Aaron.

Merrill "Little Red" Robinson, a native Texan and born and raised in Austin, is a redheaded sportswoman who heeds the call to hunt, fly fish, hike, advocate for public land and water access, promote the conservation of our nation's wildlife, land, waterways, and fish, and for anything and everything outdoors. A graduate of the University of Mississippi, better known as "Ole Miss," Robinson initially went to college to become a sideline reporter and sports broadcaster. However, she changed course and earned a degree in print journalism with a specialization in public relations.   Founder and owner of an outdoor industry public relations and marketing company, , located in Austin, Texas, Robinson works alongside a small creative team of outdoor enthusiasts who specialize in public relations, marketing, social media, branding, photography, web development, and graphic design.    In preparation for a black bear hunt in the Gila National Forest of New Mexico, Robinson set out to purchase as much women's gear as possible.  Much to her disappointment, she found little to no women's gear that fit right, was manufactured for durability, and the majority of the options had unnecessary colors such as pink or purple in the camouflage patterns. A few months after she returned home from her successful hunt, she started the Little Red Sportslist campaign.    is a women's hunting and fishing campaign. The campaign is a detailed list of wild game and fish that Robinson will be hunting and fishing for, and she has taken on the challenge of utilizing only women's gear. The mission is to publicize the available equipment and gear for women in the outdoor market, to help women feel more comfortable in hunting culture, as well as educate women on the importance of the conservation of our wildlife, fish, waterways, and public land and water access.   Robinson has already begun to help women get more involved in the outdoors by creating an all-female Facebook group called . The group is filled with women who love to hunt, fish, hike, trail run, camp, and just be outdoors. We're a group of Sportswomen across the globe uniting to empower and encourage each other in the outdoors.

Growing up hiking, camping and fishing in Connecticut and Colorado have contributed to this philosophy.  As someone who makes fly fishing gear, I have a responsibility to help protect the environment. By using materials made from plastic waste and by repurposing climbing rope and sail material in my bags, I hope to be a part of the solution rather than the problem.” We could not agree more! When I was 9 I received a fly tying kit for Christmas or my birthday and dabbled in the technique but never had it fully introduced to me. As I grew up I was rebellious and found drugs and alcohol as an escape. This led me to many years of hardship and chaos. But there was always fishing, my dad knew that if he fished with me I wouldn't do drugs or drink. In high school, my nickname was catfish because I used to go to keggers at the lake and would always bring my fishing gear  That all changed when I graduated high school and left for an unsuccessful career n the marine corp. It was during this time that my father was killed in an automobile crash.  I drank and smoked my way out of that career path. I picked up the construction trades and fished and drank my adult life away. When I was 38 I had had enough and found a group of people to help me recover from my alcoholism. One of them suggested that I find a hobby to take my mind off of drinking, something that the drinking had taken away. I remember how fondly I was of fishing and began to fish in earnest again. One day I saw a guy nymphing for half pounders on the trinity river and I was  fascinated and hooked. I stopped spin fishing that day and went and bought a fly rod and set up the next day. Soon after I decided that I should tye my own flies and the rest is history. It was soon after I became married and moved back to central California, I found a fly fishing club in Tracy California and was taught how to tie proper by some highly talented tyers. In 2010 my ex wife was offered a job in Idaho Falls. I jumped at the chance to move to a place close to so many blue-ribbon streams! After a few years there I was approached by the  and asked about visiting east Idaho. that led to the now famous movie,. that movie changed so many peoples lives. I continued to fish until late 2015. I was involved in a near fatal auto accident. I have since recovered and am slowly getting back into fishing and tying again.

There I was.  340 lbs.  The thought of loosing weight would make me sweat.  Heck, breathing would make me sweat.  To be fair, I was down 20 lbs from my heaviest 7 years prior.  Due to experimenting with a diet pill that would make you crap yourself if you weren’t careful.  It was supposed to help you train yourself from eating greasy, fatty foods, but I didn’t use it that way.  I just learned to never trust a fart. I needed to find another way to do this.  I needed to find a new way of life.  This old one wasn’t working out so hot for my health.  Back in my 20’s, after frequent knee injuries, panic attacks, and other health issues, I was placed on blood pressure medication, and temporarily on anti anxiety pills (clonazepam), with the understanding it was temporary, and I would go see a counselor.  The counselor helped get me off the me off clonazepam, but the anxiety continued.  So I would self medicate when needed with alcohol.  The weeks rolled into months, and the pounds began to melt away!  One year later I celebrated loosing my 100th pound, by getting hammered!  (jokes)  It was a quiet celebration.  But definitely a personal victory that I cherish. It wasn’t until July of 2017, that i went on my first camping hike, that changed my life.  But the beauty of the trail… The beauty of nature…  Nothing compared to being in the woods.  Nothing compared to the sound of the river next to our camp. That same summer I took up fly fishing as well.”

Join us this week as we talk with Kyle Wilkinson. We wanted to highlight a first year river guide, learn what he had to do to become a guide, how he's feeling going into the game and what he's hoping to learn. We're going to follow up with him later in the season to see how things are going. Excellent interview! "My name is Kyle Wilkinson. I’m a sleep-deprived full-time college student, obsessed  part-time fly fishing guide, and a podcast/blogging junkie. If I’m not in school or on the water, I’m at the tying bench listening to podcasts or I’m on my computer writing and reading blogs. I enjoy taking pictures of my outdoor adventures and dipping my toe in videography and editing. Everything I do is in preparation for my next experience on the water. I’m always growing and learning more about the sport that I didn’t know before. I grew up on a small farm with a creek in my backyard, a tiny trickle of water where my fishing gene became fully expressed. As many do, I began fishing with a spinning rod and reel chasing all manners of trout and warm water species (something I still do from time to time), and eventually found myself with a fly rod in my hands. After a vacation to Yellowstone National Park with my father at the age of 14, there was no turning back. We caught loads of trout on flies and had a blast doing it. You could say, dare I mention such an overused cliche, that I was “hooked.” Since that time, I’ve travelled across the state of Washington and even across the country in pursuit of my passion for fly fishing. Although I am also an archery hunter, backpacker, and biker, I’ve spent most of my free time on a variety of challenging and intriguing waters to broaden my knowledge on the sport of fly fishing. There is just something in pursuing a fish with a fly that I am drawn to. I look forward the next step in my angling career as a fly fishing guide. I had the pleasure of watching one of my best friends, another one of the guides at Ellensburg Angler, grow as a fisherman through his experiences guiding last year. He and I have fished quite a bit the last couple seasons, and earlier this year the head guide at Ellensburg Angler asked me if I would be interested in guiding with them part time. I jumped on the opportunity and have been training with the guide crew ever since. All of the guys have decades worth of combined guide experience under their belts, and it’s been a privilege learning from all of them. It’s been an eye-opening experience learning from the guys who spend so much of their time on the water. The way I fish, everything from line and leader setup, reading water, timing hatches, and tweaking fly patterns to become more productive on the water, has completely evolved as result from sharing a boat with these guys. Each of the guides has their own way of fishing and guiding, and I try to incorporate all of what I learn into my own fishing and guiding. Ellensburg Angler received the Orvis Endorsed Outfitter of the Year award in 2016, a testament to the awesome staff that I get to work with. My original plan going into college was to become a high school teacher, like my father, in order to have enough time to hunt and fish on weekends and during extended breaks. I thought this would be a great fit for me, having so much free time to pursue my passion. But as I progressed through my first year of post-high-school education, I realized teaching, specifically in the sciences, just wasn’t for me. I didn’t have enough interest in the teaching itself and had difficulty staying engaged in my classes. Halfway through my second year at my local community college, I decided to change my major from education to digital journalism. This change was possibly the greatest decision I’ve ever made in my education career. I’m enjoying my classes more than ever before, and find ways to implement what I’m learning in the classroom into my passion outside of school. I’ve tailored my classes to benefit my future goals by taking digital photography classes, extensive writing courses, and blogging/social media courses. I have dreams of writing for fly fishing publications, and have already spent time working on my blog, Kyle in the Outside, and on social media outlets under my alias, flybum_101. I hope to continue to blend my education and fly fishing and eventually form a career where I can feel like I’m not even working. I doubt I could have the opportunities I have today without the support from my family, my girlfriend, my close friends, and mentors. Everyone has always been helpful and positive, never telling me I couldn’t do it. I appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm for me as I approach these next steps in my education and angling career."

I’ve been building up this episode over the past few episodes of our podcast and I’m excited to be able to share this news with you! Remote. No Pressure. started behind a small card table on a very outdated Mac computer with zero listeners and zero industry contacts.  We didn’t know anyone who could sponsor, underwrite our venture or even encourage us in moving forward. However, we didn’t need the encouragement, because we truly believe whole heartedly that this is what we’re called to do and that drives every single episode and that’s what keeps us coming back to the mic. We truly believe that fly fishing has the power to change the world and it’s our goal to impact others in a positive way within the industry. In 2014, Jess and wife Lauren’s son, Kase, was born. Soon after, Jess started experiencing intense anxiety attacks, which he had never had before. In a six-month period, he lost 30 lbs., was missing work frequently, and distancing himself from loved ones. "A friend that I admired kept getting me out on the river and I found that when I was on the river I forgot about everything but fishing,” explained Jess. All his worries and anxious thoughts seemed to disappear as soon as he stepped into the water. “When we are fly fishing we are so concentrated on casting, mending, presenting good drifts, etc., that we forget about everything else around us." During this time, Jess was introduced to mentoring children in foster care through an organization at church. The timing was perfect. He was looking for a way to give back to the community through fly-fishing, a sport that had helped him over some very tough hurdles. "It broke my heart knowing that my son was going to grow up in a loving home with parents that would support him no matter what and these kids in foster care did not have that. It’s hard enough growing up, much less growing up without loving parents." He continued, "They did not choose this path. Someone else’s action brought them to where they are." Jess realized that not only could fly fishing help these children’s lives, but it would be an opportunity for them to get out on an adventure, which is something they don’t often get to experience.

Long time trout bum talks to us about how he got into the lifestyle, how fly fishing has changed his life and his good friend Left Kreh. He also discusses the new book “America’s Favorite Flies.” It’s more of a work of art than just another book. Here is an excerpt from the book on David.   “In the spring of 1969 I met my fishing mentor and best friend, Steve Thomas. Steve introduced me to the great outdoors, with huge emphasis on fishing and bird hunting. This was something that this “City Boy” had no clue about. The rest of the time I visited Steve’s hippy pad in Grand Rapids, MI changed my life forever. We were sitting around, doing what hippies did back then. When the smoke started to clear I noticed a strange box sitting on his desk. The box had a bunch of multicolored feathers and other stuff hanging out of both sides of it My curiosity got the best of me and I asked him what was in the box. “Those are my fly tying materials, Man!” Steve replied excitedly. I don’t think that any of his other friends showed any interest in that box. With my mouth agape, I asked, “Your what?” trying to figure out if my smoke-filled brain was hearing him right. Steve is the kind of guy that could sell a refrigerator to an Eskimo! Like an evangelist, he began preaching to his congregation. . . Me. He began to zealously tell me all about fly fishing, bug hatches, big fish and how much fun it was. Even though I didn’t know what the hell he was talking about, Steve reeled me in! “When are we going?” I found myself asking him. At that point, I still had no idea what I was getting myself into. About 6 hours later, I was soon to experience my first Hendrickson may fly hatch. I was standing with Steve in the middle of the Little South Branch of the Pere Marquette River, like a fish out of water. I was clad in waders and fly vest that he borrowed from his father.”

I’ve also built fly rods and have designed and attempted to commercially sell fly rods.  I’ve designed a couple fly reels and sold 700 of them last year.  I supply fly boxes to over 80 fly fishing clubs around the country.

Well, aside from someone that forgot to apply sunscreen correctly, I am an avid fisherman, artist and musician.  I now live in Charleston, SC, and it has been quite an adventure getting here.  I am originally from Dallas, TX...with a stint in Jackson, WY, and Atlanta, GA.   My first recollection of being interested in "Art" was when I was about 5 years old.  I remember in pre-school always drawing E.T. and the Miami Dolphins logo, the desire to draw water creatures (And Aliens) was born.  Since then I have been in love with fishing and drawing fish.  My first memories of fishing was back in East Texas with my 2 Grandfathers and my Dad.  They would take me fishing anytime I asked, and they are my favorite memories to this day.  I truly believe my Papa and Pawpaw are with me everytime I get my feet wet in a River, Lake or Saltwater Flat. There is nothing more enjoyable than capturing an image of a moment in time on my camera then converting it to paper or canvas.  I love painting people's fish too, its something that I have been doing for a long time and has more or less gotten me to this point.  Doing the custom "Catch and Release Paintings" has given me the ability to call myself an artist and gives way to me doing my own artistic creations. Although my full background is freshwater fishing, I have now taken the plunge into the saltwater fishing spectrum.  I love everything about...it is so unpredictable, always changing.  The moon, the tides, the weather, the boats, the tackle...it's a whole other world, and I love it.  I look forward to bringing you images that I capture from this new chapter in my life...I plan on keeping it on this chapter for a long time!

As the son of a coal miner growing up in Central West Virginia, I would sit within classrooms and daydream of being outdoors on a stream instead of listening to the drone of my teachers. It was my father that I owe the most to for teaching me about life and introducing me to hunting and fishing. Dad served our country in the United State Marine Corps in the early 60’s and then followed a family tradition in becoming an underground coal miner. Dad worked very hard six to seven days a week in the coal mines of West Virginia that claim the lives of many men and women. When Dad would get that rare day off or take his well earned vacation time, we would spend it camping along a trout stream or in the hard woods of West Virginia chasing whitetail deer. Competitive sports were a big part of my life and I never remember my mother or father not sitting on the hot bleachers on the field or in the gym. It is to them I owe many thanks. My fondest memories were spent along a stream in a wall tent listening to Dad tell ole Semper Fi stories or how he made a living in the dark & damp coal mines. I broke family tradition and went to college and did not become a coal miner. Although I don’t regret not becoming a miner, I do respect and salute all of the men and women that protect and serve our country. Today, I am blessed with two lovely daughters, Laken and Autumn and a beautiful wife Shelly. I thank God for letting me borrow his children for our short time on this earth. After working 15 years in education with troubled youth as well as serving as President & CEO of a gas & oil company, with the support of my family, I have decided to leave my work behind to pursue my passion for the art of fly fishing. Traveling both far away and close to home, please join me, my friends, and special guests, in our ultimate outdoor adventures. These are my Fly Rod Chronicles.

"I was born, raised, and still live in Manhattan NYC. I've been fishing for as long as I can remember and some of my earliest clear memories involve casting a spinning rod. While fishing was an occasional summer activity for me, at around the age of 11 I began to attend sleep away camp. My camp was located on a small pond and during free time I could be found standing on the docks or floating in a row boat with a spinning rod in my hand. A few years later I discovered youtube and stumbled upon all the fishing content found there. The influx of fishing information peaked my interest and I began to fish more seriously than I had before. I returned to central park where some of my earliest fishing experiences had been and finally had success catching larger fish with more frequency. When I was 14 I stumbled upon fly fishing accidentally. I was forced to go with my father to the Orvis store in NYC so that he could exchange a gift when I noticed the fishing section. I spent about an hour that day talking to the fishing manage, Rob Ceccarini about fly fishing and the tackle associated with it. Two weeks later for Channukah I recieved my first fly outfit and have been obsessed ever since. I was able take advantage of all of the knowledge in my local fly shop in order to learn the sport and improve my skills. I've been fortunate to fish in some pretty amazing places across the country but I spend most of my time fishing local waters within and around NYC. After school and on the weekends I'll target bass or carp in Central Park. And when possible my dad, who I was able to get into the sport, and I will go trout fishing in the rivers of western NJ, or the Catskills. For the past two summers I have been able to attend trips with Lillard Fly Fishing Expeditions in Maine and Yellowstone, unforgettable experiences that have certainly improved my fishing skills. I also began to work part time at the Orvis NYC store last spring, where I can now be found almost every Sunday. My favorite thing to do is mousing for trout, as many of my Lillard trip mates can attest, it sometimes borders on insanity. I've also recently fallen in love with Northern Snakehead, although I have yet to land one. I was lucky enough to have an article published about my hunt for the snakehead and my unique NYC fishing story in the New York Times. I'm also an avid fly tier, while I tie to fill my boxes with trout, carp, and bass flies, I really enjoy experimenting to create new patterns for species that have previously been unaccessible to fly rod anglers such as snakeheads and musky."

Karin Miller is the Owner of Zen Tenkara/ Zen Fly Fishing Gear, a Colorado company that designs, manufactures and sells tenkara rods and gear. She’s a native Floridian who grew up on Hollywood Beach, in the Florida Keys and the pristine Bahamas. Her love of water was fostered out of time spent on adventures with her father, who lived on a boat. She moved to land-locked Colorado in 1999 where she gradually fell in love with mountain rivers, lakes and streams. Karin was introduced to fly flying in 2001 but it wasn’t until she tried tenkara in 2010, that she became a passionate angler. The fixed-line method of fly fishing was simultaneously uncomplicated and dynamic - thrilling, yet somehow calming. Tenkara brought her back to her element of water and fish. She recognized it as a highly effective tool that made fly fishing tangible to more people and brought an innocence back to the often-complicated sport. In 2012, Zen Fly Fishing Gear/Zen Tenkara was born. The company has been pushing the boundaries of tenkara and offering cutting edge rods that are designed to target large, power fish, untraditional to the method. Karin’s reputation in the industry is of breaking the rules and revolutionizing this ancient method of fly fishing. She's developed a “fusion” of fixed-line tenkara with traditional fly fishing that is delivering adrenaline charged experiences and changing the way people think of this ancient Japanese method. Now in approximately 15 retail stores and chains as well as lodges in Patagonia, Alaska and Mexico, Karin spends most of her time doing presentations, demonstrations, trainings, testing rods and fishing. She lives in Loveland, Colorado, has a son, Aaron, is engaged, and is shadowed by two dogs.

Our guest Matt Peisert talks to us about his journey from the classroom to guiding on some of Michigan's finest rivers. "Catching steelhead on the Rogue River created my desire to guide. I knew they were awesome and a blast to catch, and I was suddenly infected with a passion. I was skipping class, going before my 8am class, and spending every minute I could on the river. I was so excited about these fish that I HAD TO share this cool new activity with my friends. Now I really didn't know much of anything about what I was trying to do, but I knew enough to catch a few fish and tried to ooze every ounce of knowledge I had gathered from trial and error and talking with more knowledgeable guys on the river."- Matt

With two-decades as a beat cop under his belt, Jon Osborn fly fishes and bird hunts as often as possible. Author of Classic Michigan Flies – 16 Legendary Patterns (Stackpole, 2013), Jon regularly contributes to magazines such as Sporting Classics, Michigan BLUE, Pointing Dog Journal and Upland Almanac, among others. These days, he’s writing new book entitled, Flyfisher’s Guide to Michigan (Wilderness Adventures Press, 2019). A career in police work begs for balance and few pastimes fit the bill better than time spent in wild places. Fly fishing has drawn Jon to the Florida Keys flats, Wisconsin’s Driftless Region and the mountains of Colorado and Montana. That said, he’s a Michiganian to the core and loves nothing better than exploring secluded lakes and streams in his home state. Admittedly a bit eclectic, Jon prefers waxed-cotton and wool over nylon, bamboo over graphite and smokes a charred, corncob pipe. Come October, he wanders the autumn woods with a weatherworn side-by-side, insisting a quality experience is the essence of any adventure. Jon values faith, family and friends even more than hunting or fishing and shares his life with an amazing wife, two exceptional children and a hunt-crazed English setter. A close-knit circle of artists, educators, rod makers, guides and writers rank among his closest pals.

Through careers in banking (commercial lending – First National Dallas) and through sales positions with Wall Street firms (taxable fixed income – Lehman, First Boston, Bear Stearns), his interest and participation in fly fishing flourished. He met Ken Whellams, who owned Springbrook Canada in Calgary while fishing the Bow River in 1980 and their friendship led to many great trips with the likes of Flip Pallot and Lefty Kreh. He also learned a lot about the fly fishing business and in 1995 purchased Springbrook USA from Ken, which at the time was a wader and fly importing company. At a young age, Dave’s father introduced him to fishing and sparked a lifelong passion to experience and enjoy life in the great outdoors. Growing up in Eugene, Oregon, his stomping grounds were and remain legendary namesakes such as Crane Prairie and Hosmer Lakes as well as the Deschutes, McKenzie and Umpqua Rivers to name a few. While Dave quickly discovered the thrill of having a fish on, it was the awe of his surroundings that instilled his deep passion for fishing and conservation. Dave has dedicated his professional life to the fly fishing industry and has spent the last twenty-plus years relentlessly trying to surpass expectations as a guide, outfitter owner, conservationist, and fly fishing ambassador. Dave is quick to note that he is nothing in his pursuits without his wife Natalie and daughter Nessa, who constantly remind him why he is so inspired without saying a word. In addition to co-owning and operating Emerald Water Anglers, Dave is a Patagonia Ambassador, Winston, Rajeff Sports, and Bauer Pro Staff Member; FFF Certified Casting Instructor; and widely published photographer.

AD Maddox was born in Nashville, Tennessee. She was raised in an artistic environment and has been painting for as long as she can remember. After traveling extensively in her 20’s she settled in Jackson Hole, Wyoming where she began her professional career painting trout. “Trout are chameleon-like, constantly changing color in and out of water – they represent an intriguing color palette and artistic challenge.” Maddox, self-taught, paints in oil mainly on Belgian linen and develops each piece with her signature layering technique. Fascinated by bright colors, Maddox is constantly challenged by each piece. “Each painting has a crux where I have to tweak, harmonize and fine tune the colors for the image to pop. This is the never-ending bull-bait as an artist!” Her style is always changing as portrayed in her works through the years. Maddox currently resides in Nashville where she balances her studio time with fly fishing trips and of course … Motorcycling!
