𝑷𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒘𝒊ll 𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔! 𝑫𝒐 𝒊𝒕 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒘𝒂𝒚!

𝘽𝙚𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙢 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧.

How to recognize them?

  1. They “play savior” when you have troubles but disparage or ignore your successes.

  2. They do their best to undermine your independent thinking.

  3. They “pull rank” on you frequently.

  4. They may remind you of your past mistakes. #MoveOnBruh

  5. When you are with them, all your self doubt surfaces.

  6. The bolder you get, the more uncomfortable with you they become.

  7. They may call you ungrateful when you legitimately no longer need their help. #AfterAllIveDoneForYou

  8. Their “help” usually comes with strings.

𝑨𝒗𝒐𝒊𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒔 𝒈𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒑 𝒐𝒇 𝒑𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒍𝒆!I have often talked about how it’s not necessary to be a people pleaser. I have talked about how it can rob you of your life, when you spend all your time and energy, running from pillar to post trying to do the bidding of others. You have no time for your own priorities because you inherently see yourself as less important than other people. Many people pleasers also pick and choose who they will “please” and who they will “recruit” to join their “people-pleasing lifestyle”. Here is a word if you are someone who has a lot of people pleasers in your life: 1. They will subtly try to make you behave like them. 2. They will rather you shut up, and go along to get along. 3. When you stand up for yourself, a people pleaser will make you feel as though you are the bad guy. 4. They may secretly resent the fact that you have agency and you use it. 5. They are NOT victims. 6. People-pleasing is a form of control. People pleasers think that they have to “make everybody happy“. You cannot try to control everyone’s emotions, because you do not want to feel uncomfortable ones. 7. If you find yourself constantly in a tug-of-war with a people pleaser, and you are not one, try your best to extricate yourself from their drama, before they take you down with them.

The other day, someone made a comment about the struggle between familial duty and personal growth.

1. Realize that you have to do both: Many people feel that it is one or the other. This is like saying that you will take a shower or brush your teeth. No! You have to do both.

2. Your personal growth will improve your ability to do your familial duty well.

3. You will model both effectively for your children and family members

4. The idea is not to dedicate the same amount of time to each thing, but the appropriate amount of time, energy and resources to both.

5. You might resent your family if later on in life, they do not prioritize you over themselves or their own personal growth.

Need to “find the balance”?

Dear firstname,

There are very few things that can get to you like a loss of hope. Here are some of the ways to revive your sense of hope and dream again!

  1. Anchor yourself to something bigger than you. For me it’s God.

  2. Have a human anchor. I

  3. Remind yourself of what you have survived.

  4. Remind yourself of the sudden miracles that have turned things around for you in the past.

  5. Be purposefully grateful for small things.

  6. Talk! Talk to someone you trust and build up a circle of trust around you.

  7. Acknowledge the changing terrain.

  8. If you are a business owner, ask yourself this question every day until you get the answer: what can my business offer people during a recession?

  9. Sing and dance..

  10. Don’t rehearse the problem.

There is a saying, where there is life there is hope. it’s a cliché, but it’s a cliché because it’s true.

  • There are people who are committed to misunderstanding you.

  • There are people who will argue with you even if you believe the same things (they are just contradictory and contrarian).  *

There are some people who will argue with you just because it’s you.

  • Those same people when they hear from others,  they will not say  “pim” * There are some people whose worldview is vastly different from yours and you still have to co- exist with them * If logic did not get them there, logic will not get them out.

What to do?

  • Step back

  • Remove your own emotions from the situation

* Think about a bug, and that you are trying to teach it calculus.

  • Ask yourself: can they receive what I am giving

  • Last but not least, always remember that you can explain something to people, but you cannot understand it for them.

What happens when our “roles” in peoples lives change?

  • Instead of trying to fit into someone else’s framework, just to keep the peace and keep your relationship with them, it is better to be your authentic self and let the chips fall where they may.

  • If you need to make changes necessary for your growth as a person, do it. It can be argued that anyone that doesn’t want you to grow and become better should probably be at the periphery of your life, and not at the center.

  • Don’t remain angry when people’s attitudes toward the “New You” change. Instead of being angry and trying to force them to accept this better version of you, just re-direct your energy and emotions to the new crop of supporters that will inevitably come your way.

  • Don’t over explain yourself. Remember, those who truly matter won’t mind and those who mind don’t really matter.

  • Make your growth a priority. That way, you will not be distracted by other people’s attitudes.

*Don’t condescend. Just accept that some people will be ok with the NEW YOU and some people won’t.

They say when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Well when life seems to have you in knots and you have more tasks and less time, here is what to do..

  1. Remember you can only do one thing at a time. Worrying about all the things you have to do is not going to get them done.

  2. Making a to do list is so that you don’t forget tasks, not something to beat yourself up with, when you “only” do 25 things out of 50.

  3. Instead of working off a “to do list”, take the things from the list in order of urgency (deadlines) and importance, and assign them spots on your calendar.

  4. Use a calendar/ schedule

  5. Delegate, hire and outsource, and don’t micromanage.

  6. Make peace with an imperfect life.

  7. Do calming activities so that you don’t feel frantic (frantic feelings make you feel like everything is worse than it is)- meditation, breathing exercises, being out in nature etc.

  8. Share your struggles with a close trusted friend.

Dear doctor,

1. Take care of your health. Don’t pretend to be a superhero. Because, the day you crumble, everything you’re holding up will crumble too.  Also because you just need to.

2. Burnout is common, but not necessary. You do not have to fall prey to this scourge.

  1. Develop a healthy identity that doesn’t involve you being a superman, a savior, a martyr, or a fixer.

4. If you suffered certain things on your path to becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean that you get to subject Junior Doctors to the same suffering. Do better.

  1. Get the best job you possibly can.

  2. Don’t fall prey to the belief that there are no better jobs out there. Remember, there is a Physician shortage, not a patient shortage.

  3. Do something that you love every day.

I am Dr. Shola Ezeokoli, Physician coach. I help busy physicians defeat and prevent burnout, as well as create options for themselves outside of traditional medical practice.   Watch a free Masterclass on burnout here.  https://physicianhealyourself.life/burnout-to-balance-masterclass-optin/

  1. At family gatherings, you don’t have to engage in discussions that leave you feeling unhappy.

  2. At family gatherings, you don’t have to eat things that you would rather not “just to make other people happy”.

  3. You don’t have to spend your holidays with toxic relatives.

  4. Draw boundaries around your spending too: Don’t borrow money you don’t have, to buy things you don’t need, to impress people you don’t like.

  5. Let peace of mind be your “guide“, as opposed to traditions that no longer serve you, your family, or anyone’s overall well-being.

  6. Don’t over commit by saying yes to more things than you can handle. The sun will not fall out of the sky if you say no.

Today, I share strategies for stress freedom during the holidays. If you want to work with me on a one-on-one basis, book a call here!

  1. Looking to all and sundry for approval of your decisions. As a sovereign being over your own personal life, you don’t need the approval of everyone. No it behooves you to obtain advice, counsel, mentoring or coaching from the appropriate people. However, the approval of everybody and their grandmother is not needed.
  2. Taking advice from the wrong people: some people literally run away from the right people and take advice from the wrong people. What do I mean by the wrong people? People have an agenda beyond your own success. People who have disparaged you in the past. People who are typically not supportive. I think there’s something in it in people where we want our critics to approve of us. The truth is that this is why they are critics. Frequently, they will never approve. Seek advice from people who have your best interest at heart. Better yet, learn to trust your own intuition, and add counsel, as another layer.
  3. Being afraid to do the unconventional. How many times have you heard people say things like “I’ve never seen that done this way before“. The truth is unconventional does not mean wrong or bad. As a sovereign person over your own life, you are the only person, that knows the details and intricacies of your own life. Therefore there will be times when you will have to make decisions that are not popular, but our decisions for your own good.
  4. Not being in integrity: as a sovereign person, you need to walk your talk. In addition, your thoughts, feelings, and actions should pretty much line up. If you are pretending to be OK with being an employee just because everyone around you seems to be that way, you will never attain the heights of what you truly want. This is because your actions are out of integrity with your thoughts and feelings. What if do you want to own your own business? Also, the converse is true. Nowadays, in this gig economy, many people are starting businesses and it is causing a lot of people who don’t feel the need to do so to feel a bit left out. Don’t run off and start a business that your thoughts and feelings are not lined up with, simply because everyone is doing so, that is a lack of integrity.
  5. Giving away your personal sovereignty. There are things that you control, and there are things that you cannot control. A sure way to live a disappointed life Is trying to Control things you cannot, while simultaneously not controlling the things that you can. You can control what you eat, who you listen to, what do you think, what do you feel, who are you allowing in your life, how much time you spend on non-obligatory activities; the life you choose to create. You cannot control what the government does, the weather, the traffic, what specific illness what patient has; how many COVID-19 patients there are; and a myriad of other things. Make a distinction between the two and spend more time, money, and energy in the things that you can actually control.

There is nothing magical, spiritually significant, or special about the first day of January except the significance that we ourselves attach to it. I like to remind myself that the Gregorian calendar is man-made and was a reform of a previous calendar( the Julian calendar) which was itself a reform of the Roman calendar. There are also in use many different calendars( the lunar calendar, Igbo calendar, Hebrew calendar, the Chinese calendar, etc) in use, side by side with the Gregorian. The point I am making is that you do not have to “make new year resolutions”; you do not have to fall into despair at the end of the year, and you do not have to wait until the first of January to make the changes that you need to make in life.

The first of January is, however, a convenient time to set goals, and, the span of a year is a good time to review those goals you set( depending on what they were). However, new year resolutions are a total waste of time.

When you live a Balanced Life, you are better equipped to handle what life throws at you.

Why do I prefer to talk about the balanced life, instead of self-care. Self-care conjures up pictures of a spa day, Massage, exercise, and sometimes people throw in meditation. The balanced life, however prioritizes total care for your spirit soul and body. It is divided into five pillars, which I call the five pillars of balance. Physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and relational. When “self care” is seen from this perspective, it becomes more than just one spa day every few months. It is a way of life. It is realizing that unless you take care of yourself consistently, you are no good to anyone. Contrary to what seems to be popular belief, a balanced life does not mean giving equal amounts of time, energy, and focus to everything in your life. That is not possible to do. Somethings in your life are more important than others, and some things in your life are more important at certain times than others. Of course, true emergencies are most important, and most urgent. For example, a burst appendix, is always going to be more important than a  therapy session, simply because it is a life threatening emergency. I will now break down the five pillars of balance, and how to be practical about taking care of the whole you.

Every three months I go on a one day personal retreat. I save up a few dollars each month, and I use this to book a hotel room within a 30-40 minute distance from my home and I take off. I usually stay for 10 to 12 hours and I have no agenda. As someone who plans out every single minute of her life, this is a refreshing change of pace. I pray, sleep, swim, exercise, eat, read, and do very little by way of work. Since I started taking these personal retreats, my life has moved to a new level. I have become more creative, more productive, more efficient and more peaceful.

Here is the power of a personal retreat when done properly...
