Yotam Ophir (PhD, University of Pennsylvania, 2018) is an Assistant Professor of Communication at the University at Buffalo. His work combines computational methods for text mining, network analysis, experiments and surveys to study media content and effects in the areas of political, science, and health communication.
Dr. Ophir authored and co-authored more than 30 peer-review academic papers, published in journals such as American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Public Understanding of Science, Journal of Public Health, Health Communication, Communication Methods and Measures, and more. His upcoming coauthored book (Oxford University Press) on the 2020 Presidential Elections, “Democracy amid Crises: Polarization, Pandemic, Protests, & Persuasion”, will be available in January 2023. Alberto M. Fernandez is vice-president of the Middle East Media Research Institute and a member of the board of directors of George Washington University's Center for Cyber and Homeland Security. He served as the U.S. State Department’s coordinator for the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications from 2012 to 2015, retiring from the State Department in May 2015. Fernandez has served as U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea; charge d’affaires to the Republic of Sudan; director for Near East public diplomacy; director for Iraq public diplomacy; and in senior public diplomacy positions at the U.S. embassies in Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria, and Guatemala. His awards include the 2008 Presidential Meritorious Service Award, 2006 Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Public Diplomacy, and a 2003 Superior Honor Award for his work in Afghanistan. Fernandez has published in ReVista: the Harvard Review of Latin America, Middle East Quarterly, and the Journal of the Assyrian Academic Society. What Happened to Tunisia? in 2015 the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet The Nobel Peace for their work that led to a national unity government. For a few months, it seemed like democracy was possible for the northern African nation. However, just a few months later, Tunisia faced economic, social and political instability that led to the elections of President Kais Saied. Despite running as a reformer who promised to protect democracy, Saied reversed many of the democratic safeguards protected by the 2014 constitution. Why do Americans no care about foreign affairs? This is a common question.
In this episode, we offer several potential explanations. Americans have always been isolationists dating back to the founding fathers. As residents of a large island that is surrounded by two oceans and good neighbors in the form of Mexico and Canada, Americans have the luxury of living in a bubble. Next, media coverage. A large body of academic literature indicates that the vast majority of nations receive little to no coverage at all. As the old saying says, the media doesn't tell us what to think but it does have the ability to tell us what to think about. As the media provides little focus on the world, Americans may understand that foreign affairs are not important. Next, we debate what this means and why it matters? How do governments gain support for their foreign policy objectives from their domestic audiences? Why is this important?

In June of 2022 the people of Colombia went to the polls for the 2nd round elections between Gustavo Petro, a senator and former Mayor of Bogota, defeated Rodolfo Hernández Suárez, former Mayor of Bucaramanga, in the runoff election. Who won? Why did they win? and what does it mean for the people of Colombia? I discuss with Bogota based Colombian journalist Poly Martinez More about Poly, she explains; I studied Philosophy and Political Science at the Universidad de Los Andes, in Bogotá. For most of my life, I've been a journalist, but my CV is eclectic: I have worked in Government (Foreign Office), with oil majors (BP, internal and external comms, and comm for crisis management), with several NGOs, like Kroc Institute, encharged of monitoring the implementation of the Peace Agreement signed in 2016; Op-ed writer, newspaper and magazine editor; I'm correspondent for the Spanish Abc newspaper, among others; radio talk-show frequent panelist (news of Colombia nd the world). University teacher (journalism and political analysis), but also free-lancer writing about topics related to high-performance amateur cyclists, runners, and triathletes. In a recent Washington Post article entitled In the safe spaces on campus, no Jews allowed Anthony Berteaux argued that unlike most others, Jewish students are subjected to a litmus test on their stance on Israel when asking to join on campus social justice causes. The relationship between campus progressive politics and Anti-Israel rhetoric has reached the point of the absurd on such campuses as The University of California in Berkeley where a student waving an Israeli flag was taunted by students, while later completely ignored when waving an ISIS Flag. On the same campus, a one credit course named “Palestine: A Settler Colonial Analysis” will be offered despite a wide outcry over its one sided, antisemitic content.
The current podcast features an interview with Professor Miriam Elman, an associate professor of Political Science in Syracuse University’s acclaimed Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. The conversation will cover the impact of the BDS movement on American universities, its professors, students, and the academic community as a whole.

Written, directed and produced by award-winning filmmaker Boaz Dvir (Jessie’s Dad, Discovering Gloria), A Wing and a Prayer features firsthand accounts of daring escapes and heart-pounding action. Dvir, a Penn State University journalism and film faculty member, secured exclusive interviews with operation leader Al Schwimmer, chief pilot Sam Lewis and lead crewmember Eddie Styrak, a Polish Christian, among others.
These tell-all interviews provide rich detail about a group of Jews and Christians who helped reshape history, yet have been forgotten by history books. Aiming to change that, Dvir has presented A Wing and a Prayer at prestigious venues around the world, including the Center for Jewish History in New York City, Columbia University’s Global Center in Paris and Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

University of Iowa assistant professor Melissa Tully (Twitter @tullyme) and doctoral candidate David Tuwei (Twitter @david_tuwei) discuss their research on Kenyan mobile phone service provider, Safaricom and its role in shaping Kenya’s nation brand. Their study found that Safaricom’s marketing engages with discourses of commercial nationalism, creating a marketable Kenyan identity and culture tied to both national economic development and individual success. In addition, they found that Safaricom tied Kenyan identity, pride, and distinctiveness to commercial success, profit, upward mobility, and economic development.
