Women's Equality Day is observed on August 26th in the United States, and commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. Virginia Kase Solomón, the CEO of the League of Women Voters and a lifetime champion of civil rights and social justice, joins The Electorette to discuss the history of the women's suffrage movement, the passage of the 19th Amendment, and Women's Equality Day—which they've coined Women's Inequality Day to bring attention to the work that still needs to be done in the fight for equality. Solomón discusses the ways in which narratives around the Women's Suffrage Movement have been romanticized, and suggests ways to discuss this part of our history moving forward. We talk about Affirmative Action, and how the recent Supreme Court decision to end race-conscious admissions will ultimately affect all marginalized groups, including women. Lastly, we discuss the upcoming election cycle, and the importance of full participation, because as Solomón puts it, "We are voting for our lives." Recent viral videos where people of color are confronted in public spaces, are only half the story. CHRYL LAIRD Chyrl Laird, is a political analyst, author and professor, who specializes in Race and Ethnic Politics and Political Psychology. In her new book titled, "Steadfast Democrats: How Social Forces Shape Black Political Behavior," which Laird coauthored along with Ismail White, they analyze the historical political patterns of Black voters, and explore the question of why Black Americans are by far the most unified racial group in American electoral politics. They argue that the roots of black political unity were originally established through the adversities of slavery and segregation, when black Americans forged uniquely strong social bonds for survival and resistance. About Today's Guest: In 2013 Kate Kelly founded a group called Ordain Women to advocate for gender equality in the Mormon Church. She was convicted of apostasy by 3 male Mormon leaders & excommunicated from the church in June 2014 for speaking out against the institutional oppression of women. Throughout her legal career, she has been committed to defending human rights, the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, as well as, the rights of other marginalized groups.

Marianne Williamson is best known as an acclaimed lecturer, activist and author; and seven of her twelve published books have been New York Times bestsellers. Williamson has been one of America’s most well-known public voices for more than three decades and now she's a Presidential Candidate in the 2020 Democratic Primary race. Outside of politics, Marianne Williamson has amassed the largest social media following out of all the 2020 Democratic primary candidates and has been a popular guest on Oprah and Bill Maher. Within politics, however, Williamson is less well-known; except for her Congressional bid in 2014 for California's 33rd District, Williamson is a relative newcomer to formal politics. Williamson has a progressive platform and aligns closely with the political ideology of Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, who she supported in 2016. But Williamson thinks we need a new approach to healing the country, including establishing a cabinet level Department of Childhood and Youth; additionally her platform includes a proposal to grant a $200 billion - $500 billion in reparations for slavery, a position she's advocated for, for over 20 years, when she wrote about reparations in her book "Healing the Soul of America," in 1999. We discuss the reasons behind her decision to run for President, her platform, what motivates Trump voters and what it will take to win in 2020. Professor Martha S. Jones, author of the book Birthright Citizens: A History of Race and Rights in Antebellum America, discusses the history of birthright citizenship in America, a struggle that began before the Civil War, before the Emancipation Proclamation. During this uncertain and perilous, a time particularly dangerous African Americans, black activists fought for citizenship status, thus radically transforming the terms of citizenship for all Americans.
We also discuss correlations to modern times including the administration's recent statements around using an executive order to change the language in the constitution around birthright citizenship.

Who are the new women elected to the House of Representatives?
