In this special episode of the podcast, we interview Jenna Spears. Jenna is a pickleball player, coach and a pickleball promoter.
She shares the AHA moments, her journey as a pickleball player including her background before she started playing pickleball and how she got into pickleball.
We also talk about that micro journey within her bigger journey on the mental side of pickleball and how that changed her approach.
Jenna describes herself as a peacekeeper at heart and a little bit strong willed while on the court. Listen to this episode as Jenna shares the process of understanding herself on the court and much more!

If you're feeling frustrated with your Pickleballs development, there is a way out. That way out is through understanding the picture of Pickleball, understanding that Pickleball has a design to it. There's a beautiful puzzle that is created by the rules and the court that we play on.
What is your puzzle box cover? What's your approach to solving the puzzle?
The word of the week this week is puzzle and the FOSS approach is a way to navigate that puzzle to put those pieces together.
In this episode I explain why the FOSS approach is so helpful and why it's something that you should add to your thinking about pickleball and to your approach to this game.
In the riff, I'm going to vent a little bit as a coach from my vantage point as a trainer, as a Pickleball coach, and share with you some frustrations that I've experienced as a player and a person who wants other players to do the best they can in their game.

When we play pickleball, we sometimes get hung up on metrics that are not helpful and that actually end up being potentially destructive to the game. The most common one is win-loss. In this podcast I get into two different types of metrics and give you some ideas to pick a metric that's right for you.
The first grouping are big picture metrics. These are metrics that will help you greatly improve your relationship with Pickleball and make you that player that everybody looks forward to playing with.
There's really nothing better than everybody wanting to play with you as their partner.
In the riff I'm going to explain the mystery of the phone ring that we have at the beginning of every episode; why the ringer is in there and to make some suggestions on how to address the ringer, if it's something that you'd like for it to be something different.

Playing with a partner is a two-way street, a team sport and our behavior impact our partners' play and vice versa. That team/partner dynamic is so important to your ability to succeed as a doubles team.
So what's a good partner?
In this episode, we're going to be talking about partner play, how to frame it a little bit differently than you're thinking, and also some tips on how you can become a much better partner out there. Pick the tip that most resonates with you.
In the riff, I want to talk about the recent situation that occurred with Annaly Waters, a young but very talented player, during a tournament; what happened, how folks have reacted to it, and what we as Pickleball players can take away from it.

This week's podcast will help you really gain focus on what you're doing and also improve your pickleball because you'll be able to shed just so much noise out of the situation that you're in and I'll give you examples of a couple of situations.
You can take the concept of less is more and look at all sorts of different areas of the game. And I'm confident you're going to come up with the conclusion that in all of those situations, less is in fact more when you're playing pickleball.
Practice three shots and become very good at those three shots. You'll be amazed at how well you can play pickleball.
In the Riff, we're going to be talking about a concept that I was reminded of in the last couple of days- maintaining perspective and keeping things in context when we're playing the particular role.

The less you lose, the more you win by extension. This week we're going to be talking about the concept of losing less if you want to win more. Losing less is it's certainly making less unforced errors.
A lot of times when you watch games, you'll have a team that's up too many points. Either it's unforced errors on returns of serve, force shots, things like that. By cleaning those things up, avoiding the number of unforced errors that we have in our play, we will lose less rallies.
Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and that's great. That's how it should be. Winning is not our focus, our focus is whatever it is that brings you to pickleball.
In the Riff, we're going to talk about the recent report that came out about pickleball injuries.

When we're either in open play or we're working with some players, things seem to get really fast and everywhere, meaning the balls are going really fast.
What can happen is it can lead to less than optimal play for you. Because as you're running around, rushing around, you're not really taking the moment to focus on what's next or what you need to do to correct whatever error you're committing in your game.
You need to be able to see what's happening on the court as you play in real time. Recognize what's going on on the court and recall what happened to make adjustments in your game
We're going to be talking about slowing things down and not just the shots, we're talking about slowing down the mind.
In the RIFF we're going to be giving you a tip on the actual technique you can use that you can employ to slow your mind down.

You really have to start from a point of a different perspective than the one that perhaps you're used to.
Winning and losing as a metric may not be helpful- It's how we basically score the games. And a better metric is what you come to play for. As long as you're getting those things, you're getting what you came for.
In this episode I'll give you some suggestions on how you can reframe what you're going through and perhaps feel a little differently about the way you're playing pickleball and about your relationship with the sport in general, not just each time you play.
In the Riff, I talk about targeting, where you target a particular player in match play, when it's the right thing to do and when it should be reconsidered.

"Wait, I have a super computer?" you may ask. You 100% have one. And it is powerful. Makes ChatGPT (and all computers or programs) green with envy. There is a good chance, though, that you are not using it to its fullest capabilities when you are playing pickleball.
One example: where are you aiming your serve? Specifically. Height over the net? Specifically. If you are not providing your super computer with specific instructions you cannot be surprised when it does not do what you want. It, after all, had no clear directions.
You can change this by starting to give your super computer (your brain, of course) clear directives. Each shot. You will play better pickleball.

Partner poaching. It's part of the game - when done appropriately. But it can also be used a tool by one player to try and play an oversized role during the game. It is a particular problem in rec play when one player believes themself to be the superior player - often a misperception. In this episode we cover the basics of poaching appropriately as well as how to handle things when your partner is all up in your space. We also give you tips to avoid being that player

Many players fall into a pitfall of their own making. Specifically, players think that they need this shot or that shot. And that the framework of the game is secondary. Nothing could be further from the truth. Think of it like this: you know how to move all the pieces on a chessboard but you do not know the way the game is constructed. Not a very good way to play chess right? Same thing happens on a pickleball court.
In the riff, I share with you some recent occurrences and look at how maintaining perspective can avoid things from spiraling downwards out there.

Ever use GPS to find your way somewhere new to you? Pretty helpful right? Otherwise, you are stopping at gas stations and asking passers by where this road is or that. And forget about it if you are using a map and get turned around North to South or East to West. Be driving in circles all day.
GPS alleviates all that headache and gets you where you are going with amazing accuracy - in terms of time and location.
Works the same in pickleball. If you have a GPS system that can get you from Point A (where you are now) to Point B (where you are headed), you will save endless time and headache getting there. Plus, you can check yourself as you travel to make sure you are on the right path - the shortest course to your future pickleball self. In this episode I discuss the concept of a Pickleball GPS System for you.
In the riff, I share with you a common fallacy we engage in (no criticism as the thought is only natural): what is the "new" thing I need to improve my game? The answer is generally: nothing, you just need to get better with the "old" things.

Every pickleball player has come across that player who other players shrink from playing with: negative energy, eye rolls, verbally negative comments. Sometimes that player is us. Yikes right? Be open to the possibility that you have, from time to time, perhaps, behaved in a manner that could be improved. Might have been something as "simple" as a shoulder drop when your partner missed that put-away shot at 10-9. The bottom line is, there is always room to improve here. Check yourself next time you play.

It can sometimes be difficult for players to accept success; to give themselves permission to enjoy the good they do in their games. Here's the thing, be evenhanded about it. I guarantee that when you make that mistake, or let that lead evaporate, you let yourself know how you messed up - you may even be hard on yourself about it. Why not do the same when you play a good game or hit that good shot? Take the same energy that you use when you mess up and apply it when you do the right thing. It's only fair right?
In the riff I talk to you about how you are playing the same game as the pros (including me as a Senior Pro player). The same shots that are important to your game are important to our game. Including the "simple" shots, like a deep return of serve. Want to play better pickleball? Then get the simple things down pat. And grow from there.

There is a sweetspot when we play pickleball. Not the paddle (though that one exists too) – your sweetspot. Finding that place from where you are going to play your best and keeping it takes practice. In this episode we explain the concept of finding that edge and then give you some tips to keep it where you want. Understanding your energy level will help you avoid overheating or playing lackluster.
And what about those serve rules? We are getting asked all the time about them. Can you still spin the serve? In this week’s episode we dive into this confusing area and clear it up for you.

If you are on the road to improvement, it can feel sometimes like you are stuck in a rut. Specifically, you have been practicing this shot or technique but when the game starts, it disappears. It feels like you are wasting your time.
In this episode of Pickleball Therapy, we look at it three ways:
How do the reps of the shot or skill you are working on compare to the reps of your existing shot or skill? Bet you it is not even close.
We give you a tip you can use so that you put that new shot or skill into action the next time you play. A concrete step you can take out there.
Context is always helpful. It provides us with the perspective to more clearly understand the path we are on; the fastest way to short circuit frustration. Are you clear on your context?
During the riff, we take a look at that “winning” player at your local facility. Are they, perhaps, actually an underperforming player? Find out during the podcast. A different way of thinking about the game.

Each of us has a core reason why we play pickleball. Perhaps it is exercise. Or fun. Or social outing. Whatever your reason is for playing pickleball is the quid pro quo deal you strike each time you head to the courts. Avoid the temptation to lose sight of it once you get out there. Focus on the real reason you play and you will have a better and more productive relationship with pickleball - and you will also play better to boot.
In the riff I talk about those darned illegal serves. They ruin the game - or do they? Gain a different perspective about illegal serves and other fault calls. Could mean the difference between a great day on court and a needless argument.

When we are playing recreational play, it can be frustrating when we get partnered with a player who just does not play "right." Happy 2023. We are going to get right back into the swing of things. First: are you protecting your pickleball journey? You have agency over what you allow to come into your journey - use the agency. We give you some tips to help you keep the barbarians at the gate (good book if you are looking for one).
In the riff we discuss achievability. Perhaps you have objectives that you want to achieve in pickleball. That is great - but it helps for you to know that you can achieve those objectives. Add "achievability" to your 2023 vocabulary.

In this week's podcast I share some of myself with you. More specifically, some of my pickleball journey. From first hitting a pickleball through the medal stand in Senior Mixed Pro at this last weekend's PPA tournament in Orlando. I share it with you so that you know two things:
You can achieve whatever your goal is in pickleball and
As long as you remain curious, there is always more to learn - more to grow - in pickleball.
In the riff, I share with you how we handled being up 10-5 with a putaway shot in the gold medal match to being down 10-11 in the same game.

Oftentimes when we lose a game we feel like we failed. The same is true when we win: we feel like we succeeded. This, however, wrongly conflates success/failure with winning/losing.
Here is the thing, though, you can fail completely and still win and you can 100% succeed and still lose.
Think of a pro match at the highest level. All players are highly skilled and can hit all the shots, so to speak. Yet one team wins and one team loses. Every single match ends like this. Is that a failure by the losing team? Perhaps the losing team did everything they could to their best of their ability (a success) yet still lost.
It may help to think of it like this. You and your partner are very good 3.5 players. Across the net are two 2.5 players who have trouble hitting the ball over the net. You can play your worst game this year and still win. And they can do everything within their power as well as they can and still lose.
The winning by your team and the losing by the other team tells us nothing about how you played. Or about how they played. It actually provides wrong information if used as a performance metric as it says your team did good and the other team did not. When the reality is completely opposite.
The win/loss column is a result - nothing more.
Success/failure, on the other hand relates to how you played and your execution of your game plan that day. It revolves around your process.
Conflating win/loss with success/failure can lead you to reach the wrong conclusions about your play and, importantly, your improvement as a player.
In this week's episode we discuss this important difference. Credit to Dr. Todd Kays the author of Sports Psychology for Dummies from where we drew the inspiration for this week's podcast. Confidence is “a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s appreciation of one’s own abilities or qualities.” Two parts then that we need to feel confident on the pickleball court: (a) ability and (b) appreciation of this ability. The result: feeling of self-assurance.
You know what destroys our confidence? Doubt. More specifically, doubt in our ability.
Doubt can originate from one of two places: either you lack the ability and know it or you do not know what abilities you are supposed to have and so doubt in the dark, so to speak. This latter one is doubt that arises from the doubt itself.
So, what can we do about it? Can we take steps to improve our confidence out on the pickleball court?
The good news is “yes.” You can gain more self-assurance on the court and, in so doing, quiet the doubts in your mind. This quiet will, in turn, allow you play even better and better pickleball.
Before you can work on the thing you want to do better, you have to know what it is and how to do it properly.
If you do not know where to start, click here. It will start you down a path of clear and actionable knowledge. Start applying it to your game and your confidence will climb. Even when you miss a shot you will be able to say “I know what happened there.” That is self-assurance.

Focus will ebb and flow when you play pickleball. It is the most natural of things. But there are things you can do to improve your focus, particularly in those crucial moments: the pivot points of a game. In this episode we give you several tips you can use to improve your focus - while giving you the proper framing: focus will come and focus will go. It is part of any athlete's experience.
In the riff, we talk about an 11-9 game vs an 11-6 or even 11-3 game. They may feel the same, but are they? Proper perspective can help you better appreciate your efforts (as well as those of your opponents) out on the courts. Let us know if it works for you!

The best is when the lessons from the top pro players are things that can help us in our games and also things that are achievable by us - not matter our level. I had the opportunity to speak with two of the two senior pros in pickleball at the recent APP tournament in Hilton Head, SC. Scott Crandal and Jose Derisi had come back to win the gold medal in the men's senior pro division the day before. I asked each of them, separately, for their perspective.
I asked Scott how he approached pickleball. His answer: fundamentals - that word that makes players run away. I asked Jose for one piece of advice he had for new players. He said that players should not try to win the rally in one shot. Instead, work the rally and wait for your opportunity.
In the riff, we talk about framing the game with gratitude from the start. You will feel better and play better. Give it a try next time you play.

Sometimes we lose sight of the bowl of ice cream that we have in front of us. We did not get sprinkles, or fudge, or whipped cream in our ice cream. Does that make the bowl of ice cream any less delicious? Reframing our relationship with pickleball can help us not only feel better about our games. It can make the difference in how we play on the court. Keeping a healthy mind is your most powerful ally when you play.
In the riff, I share some thoughts about those points that can change a game. Sometimes you are up and just lose that little bit to focus. Next thing you know you lost the game. Sometimes you are behind but with a bit of focus you can snatch victory fro the jaws of defeat. Understanding these pivotal points in a game can make all the difference.

One of the best aspects of pickleball is open play. As a social sport, we get to play with pickleball players from all sorts of backgrounds and walks of life. While this is usually great, there are times when playing with "random" pickleball partners drawn from a stack of paddles can prove challenging.
In this week's episode we answer a question (and it is one we hear fairly regularly) about playing with different pickleball partners, particularly when your partner may see pickleball strategy the same as you. My guess is that if you are listening to this podcast, you know us otherwise, in which case I am sure your strategy is the correct one. But there will be times when your partner may think differently. What then?
In the riff, I share with you a personal story about doing it wrong - and then right. To help you stay on the right track.

When we think of winning as getting to 11 first and losing as when our opponents get to 11 before we do, we rob ourselves of the benefits that can come from score losing a game. The only way we grow as pickleball players is when we are pushed to do so - this often means losing in terms of the score in a game or match. Take advantage of these growth opportunities by focusing on what you can do to improve as opposed to just the L that you get after that "loss."
In the riff, we get into what it means to compete. What is the right bar for you to set for yourself when you are out on the pickleball courts.

All pickleball players have received advice about how to play the game, particularly when we were beginner pickleball players. Some of the advice is good: how to score a pickleball game, where to stand when your partner is returning serve (hopefully at the Non-Volley Line), etc. But there is also some bad (as well as at least not always applicable advice): forehand takes the middle, do not cross the middle of the court to hit a ball, etc. The worst one of all – the one we take aim at in this week’s podcast: when the third shot is being hit rush up to the Non-Volley Zone Line.
“Rush up to the kitchen” is some of the most damaging advice that new players are taught. Not only is it often the wrong pickleball strategy under the circumstances, it can have long term damaging effects on the player. Specifically, players become habituated to just running forward to the kitchen no matter what, over and over. When they finally learn the correct pickleball strategy, they have a hard time breaking this ingrained bad pickleball habit.
Check out Episode 104 of Pickleball Therapy – the Podcast dedicated to Your Pickleball Improvement – to learn more about this piece of wrong pickleball “strategy” as well as learn some tips to skirt future bad advice (you will get some).

None of us has unlimited time in our days, and certainly not unlimited time to work on our pickleball games. If we want to play our best pickleball, we must prioritize the areas of our game that are most important; those that will give us the biggest bang for our buck.
For example, the third shot drop. Is it an important pickleball shot? Of course it is. But not always. For many players, the third shot drop is unnecessary – for now. Let’s say you are missing punch volleys into the net or wide or you play against bangers but do not know how to let out balls go. In either of these cases, the third shot drop should not even be on your list of shots to improve. Probably not even Top 10.
If you are in this large group of players where the third shot drop is not Top 10 then whatever time you are working on the third shot drop is not being used for its best purpose. You are better off identifying the areas that will give you the greatest advantage and working on those.
Check out Episode 103 of Pickleball Therapy – the Podcast dedicated to Your Pickleball Improvement – to learn more about prioritizing your game. You will also get Tony’s Top 5 things he would NOT do now that he is a pickleball professional.

Getting coached at the courts can be a tricky proposition. Sometimes the advice you are getting is correct: scoring, 2-bounce rule, and similar usually do not present a problem. But oftentimes the advice is wrong: rush to the NVZ on the 3rd shot, have to wait for the ball to bounce to step into the kitchen (non-volley zone), and forehand in the middle are much-repeated erroneous maxims. What do you do when a fellow player offers unsolicited, even if well-intentioned, advice? In this episode of Pickleball Therapy we have you covered.
In the riff we flip the question around: what do you do when it is you who wants to help a fellow player? There is a "right" way of doing it.

I was reminded this week about how negativity can affect the way we interpret information that is otherwise aiming to be helpful. It can also affect your mind when you are trying to play your best pickleball. Two things can happen: 1 - you are focusing on the negatives rather than the positives - if instead you change your focus on the positives you will allow them to crowd out the negatives and 2 - your mind ignores the term "no" - just doesn't know what to do with it. This means that when you say "Don't hit the net" your mind hears "Hit the net."
That is the opposite of what you want to feed your brain. In this episode of Pickleball Therapy we address this common limitation we impose on ourselves.
In the riff, we answer a listener question about falling behind in games and give you some specific tips to help you avoid falling ehind, particularly in a tournament or there competitive setting.

If you want to improve as a pickleball player, it helps to know what is important - what you should focus on. This will avoid you from exerting efforts on aspects of the game that will probably not generate the same results. In this episode of the Pickleball Therapy podcast we will give you what you need to work on (spoiler alert - it is actually the easier side of the game). Focus on this side of the ball and you will see improved results when you play.
In the riff I will discuss whether you can improve your shot mechanics by playing - or is it practice you need?

You only have so much time (and focus) to dedicate to your pickleball improvement. Any time spent on non-productive aspects of the game is time not spend on productive aspects of the game. The obvious: you need your body to play pickleball. It is a physical activity and how your body performs will dictate how well you play on the court.
The not so obvious: there are things you can do off the court that will help improve your body and get you ready to play when you are back on the court. Pay attention to those and you will play better pickleball and, more importantly, enjoy a better quality of life.

Picking the right shots when you play is important. Part of that decision making is making selections that are not too risky. That get the job done without needless chance for error.
Think of the shots in terms of their marginal advantages. Some shots offer high advantages relative to the risk they create. An example is a deep return of serve that is aimed 4 feet inside the baseline along the centerline. This shot gives you what you need with little risk. If you target the return 1 foot from the baseline, you will get a higher advantage shot but now the risk becomes too high.
Balancing risk of the shot with the advantage given to you by the shot is key to optimal shot selection.
In the riff, we talk about a concept that will really help you with your relationship with the game - particularly when things do not go the way you hope.

There is a reasonable chance that you might be wasting your time. And perhaps even wasting a lot of it.
If you are working on shots, tactics, or strategies that only provide limited benefit but require lots of work, then you are not using your time well. In this week's episode we share a concept - marginal advantage - that will change how you go about your improvement work. Determine what mechanical, strategic or athletic pillar item will give you the greatest benefit and then compare the benefit to its cost (time primarily).
Following this process will help you avoid wasting months - even years - chasing shots and other "tricks" that will do nothing but to delay, if not outright hinder, your improvement.
In the riff, we share with you what to do when you are under duress out there - chasing down a lob, getting pulled off the court, and similar.

There is only so much information you can take in at a time. Less even once you think use “apply it” as compared to just taking it in.
To get the most out of your work, make sure it is actually becoming part of your game. Reading a WeArePickleball blog post is good. But applying that same knowledge to your game and yourself out there – now that is awesome. That is where the magic happens.
In this episode we discuss how to prepare your cup to receive new information and, importantly, apply it.

Sherlock Holmes made “elementary” cool. The most seemingly complex situation is rendered elementary once you have the right perspective on it.
Pickleball is much the same. It is a complex interrelationship of rules that create a framework in which we play the game. But, once you understand them, then navigating the game becomes elementary.
What happens to many of us is that we try to match perceived complexity with complexity in our game. We want to learn that shot which will unlock the game for us. There is no such thing.
Once you see the game, you will understand that it is won not with the fancy or complex shots. It is won by better execution of the simple shots. That is the key to this game: elementary.
PLUS, in the riff I share some tips so that you can stay on the path to your improvement.

A lot of our frustration when we are trying to improve stems from not seeing the big picture.
Pickleball is deceiving. It is a “simple” game .You just go out there and bat the ball around. Right?
What you are seeing is the portion of the iceberg that is above the water line. Most of pickleball (its big picture) lays underneath the waves. And this is what frustrates us. We should get it – we know there is something we are missing. But we just cannot see it.
We want to show you the big part of the iceberg. Help you see the big picture of the game. Once you start to see the game, you will be able to put it all together.
PLUS, I talk to you about your improvement. Is it achievable? My thoughts in the riff.

If you were to build yourself a home, you would probably want it to have:
a. A solid foundation
b. Completed wall and
c. A roof to keep the elements out.
You may also want it to have some plumbing and electrical.
So … if you were learning how to build your own home, would you not need to learn how to do all of the above?
But what about crown molding, and paint selection, and finished carpentry for those awesome accents around the place?
While those are nice to have, you first need the solid home onto which you can add these touches.
As pickleball players, too many of us spend our time learning the crown molding (extra spins on the ball), pain selection (powerful serves) and finished carpentry (a roll volley or dink). And we do so before we have learned to master the basics; before we know how to build the home itself.
What we end up with is a halfway built foundation, 2 knee-high walls and not even the beginning of a roof. And then we wonder why our crown molding or paint selection skills aren’t doing us any good.
If you want to learn the neat shots in pickleball, great. But before you spend your time on those shots, spend your time learning how to get the roof securely atop your pickleball home. That is how you will have lasting success and gain tremendous confidence on the courts.

“Forehand takes the middle.”
How many times have you heard it said on the courts?
Even though it is uttered innocently enough, this “truism” is unhelpful and oftentimes will lead you to the wrong answer. There are multiple scenarios where a player may incorrectly conclude that “forehand takes it.”
In this week’s episode we reveal the fallacy of this well-ingrained “rule” and provide you with an alternative framework that is more constructive and will lead to you having better answers on the court.
In the riff we check in with your challenges and share with you a mindset you need if you want to make changes in your game.

Bangers are gonna bang.
What to do about it? You can try to out-bang the banger. That is an option sure. But is it the best option for you?
Another option is to use your best weapon against the banger: the out of bounds directly behind you. Let some of the bangers' balls go and see what happens. You have agency over what you do on the court. And letting balls go is part of that agency.
In this episode we discuss the rationale for letting balls go and give you some suggestions for doing so.
In the riff, I share with you another challenge. This challenge is the "fix your body" challenge. Might be your elbow. Or your shoulder. Or knee. Whatever it is. Get your body well so you can play. Pickleball offers a paradox: the best players in the game use a strategy that is available to all players. This is different than most other sports, where the top performers do things that us mere mortals are simply unable to do or which we would have to dedicate every waking moment to perhaps master.
The strategy used by the best players in the game, when all the chips are in the middle of the table (when everything is at stake) is the soft game. Watch a pro match and see what they do the vast majority of the time: third shot drop, dink here, reset there. There are exciting shots, sure. But those are not what win or lose the game. It is their execution of the soft game that wins (or loses) the game.
And here is the rub: the soft game is a game that we can all learn to master. It will take some work, sure. But rather than working on things that are not getting you any closer to the best strategy, perhaps shift your work to developing the soft game; the game that the best in the game rely on to enjoy success on the court.
In the riff, I share with you another challenge. Let’s get our walking shoes (or pickleball shoes ) on and get out there. 30 minutes four times this week. This is part of the Athletic Pillar – find out more with the Three Pillars of Pickleball at WeArePickleball. Let’s do this.

The soft game is No. 1. There is just no other way about it. If you are not playing the soft game you are not using the most important part of a pickleball court.
In this week’s episode I share with you four specific uses for the soft game: (1) getting out of trouble, (2) serve side (subset of getting out of trouble) (if you do not know the difference between serve side and return side, you need some WeArePickleball in your life), (3) controlling tempo (great way to gain confidence and comfort on the court – and have more fun), and (4) defusing those pesky bangers (me included).

· Mechanical: consistency
· Strategic: intentionality
· Athletic: prepared body and calm mind

“The was my forehand.” How many times do we hear that on the pickleball court?
Is Forehand in the Middle really a thing? Well … it depends. And it certainly does not overcome some other principles (not all the time), such as Respect the “X.” What is important to continue to better understand the game so that you can determine what makes sense when. It is what we call the Strategic Pillar at WeArePickleball.
In this week’s podcast, we explore forehand in the middle and suggest when it might apply – and when not.

In this week's podcast we discuss the top three and give you our thoughts on how you can use this information to best improve your game.

There is some suggestion that pickleball is becoming a hard game. The pros are hitting harder, attacking more often. But is that really the case?
In this week’s podcast we explain why the soft game is ALWAYS the right answer to the game. It is the approach to the game used by the pros when the stakes are highest. Yet it is a strategy that any player can use, regardless of background, size, age, etc.
Adopting the soft game can radically alter your game.
In the riff we discuss minimizing injuries – on and off the court – in 2022.

We all play open play. In this episode we share with your ideas to get the most out of your open play experience: both in terms of improvement as well as enjoyment.
Are you improving in open play? If not, check out this week’s episode where we share with you specific things you can do to maximize your improvement – even at open play.
Are you losing when ahead? Perhaps losing focus towards the end when you are up 9-3? In the riff we share some ideas to help shore up that part of your game. We answer a question about how to avoid losing focus and close out more games.

There are two you's on the court, Self 1 and Self 2. Self 2 is your ally when you play pickleball. Self 1? Not so much. Self 1 just yaps your ear off with nonsense while Self 2 is trying to get the work done. In this week's podcast we talk to you about the difference between them and how to quiet Self 1.

It depends. Are you a pickleball athlete?
Why would I ask that question twice like that? It is because the answer is wholly up to you. You are a pickleball athlete if you say you are. If you take care of your body and mind. Do the things that an athlete does when they want to perform at their best. Then you are an athlete.

To play your best pickleball you need to "see" the game. This is where the Second Pillar comes in. It is not just how to hit the ball. It is what shot to hit when. The when and the why if you will. Your paddle is our in front. But are you ready? Maybe - maybe not.

It is common to feel a bit frustrated out there. We expect X from ourselves and often end up with Y.
We can work harder to improve but, perhaps, we can also reframe the narrative in our mind. If we are playing at a Y level, then expect Y.

There is a lot to learn in pickleball. A lot. The endless nature of learning in pickleball can seem a downside. It can lead to frustration and dismay. But what if you look at it as a gift - a never-ending fount of knowledge from which you can drink and drink. Listen to how Glen Peterson and Coach Pete approach it and you might be convinced.

If you are looking to play optimal pickleball, you need two things: (1) the ability to hit the shot you are trying to hit (third shot, serve, punch volley, etc) and (b) the knowledge of what shot to hit given the context of the rally (what are you trying to accomplish at that stage of the rally?). In the podcast we explore these two facets of the game and give you some tips for improving in both.

Bad advice can hurt more than just your chances of winning a rally or a game. It can significantly derail your progress as a player. In this podcast we tackle one of the most damaging pieces of bad advice: rushing to the non-volley zone.

You can have a place for your serve and return, and even a target for your third shot. But after that there are too many variables in play for a set formula to work. Will an inside, inside, outside pattern work? Impossible to say without knowing the rest of the story. Trying to copy the pros can be "dangerous" to our game. There are things that pros do that maybe we are not ready for ... yet.
But there are definitely things that the pros do that we should emulate regardless of our level. One of those is the third shot. The higher the level of player (and, by turn, the higher the level of the player's opponent), the higher their third shot apexes over the net.
Seems counter-intuitive but it makes perfect sense once you reflect on it. The pros know there is one opponent they cannot beat no matter what. In the podcast we tell you what that opponent is.

Pickleball is a strategic game. You can play it simple if you want. Nothing wrong with that. Get some exercise and social time.
BUT ...
What if you want more?
Pickleball offers more. You can think of the game as you would a chess match. Hit the ball to the left. Move to cover. Then switch it to the middle. Back to the left. You induce the pop up and hit it in the open hole for a winner.
Thinking strategically about pickleball will also show you if you are leaving your queen exposed to attack. This would be a serious error in chess. The No. 2 error in pickleball is similar in its gravity.
I also share with you some tips on using the offhand. It is what I am adding to my game.

If you want to improve as a pickleball player, you need to understand – and then embrace – process pickleball. Being driven by outcomes or results will not allow you to see when you win bad or lose good. And if you do not see those, how will you know what you need to improve to become the best pickleball player you can be?
