Series: The Heaviness of Hope (HoH)
Hope is a paradox.
We have taught people that hope is light. A helium balloon. A sunrise. Something that lifts. But anyone who has carried an unanswered prayer for years knows this is not the full picture.
Biblical hope is often something you drag behind you on the days you cannot carry it. Abraham waited decades. Joseph lay on a prison floor. Hannah wept so openly the priest thought she was drunk. David ran for his life while wearing an anointing he could not yet use. Hope was not easy for any of them.
This podcast series, The Heaviness of Hope, is a raw and real conversation discussing how and why we carry hope.

This episode is a one-oof, not part of a series, but no less important!
In this episode Phil speaks candidly about the opposition we sometimes have to face from those who are close to us. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 18:15-17 to keep short accounts, to speak with people when we feel disconnected, and to work with love and grace to seek reconciliation. But what when that fails?
There's a really cool story here about when it does work.
A friend with a lantern is all about God sending someone to help us see in the dark, as they bring a lantern that is a symbol of God's light, so we see that light always defeats darkness.
In this episode, Phil also refers to Chapter 11 of Limbo Land, The Watchman's Lantern. . You can find that book here:

Life isn’t supposed to be complicated. We make it complicated when we drift from what matters most.
In this podcast series, Phil focuses on areas of our live that we have made complicated in a way that God never intended. It's abrupt, but then that might be what you need.
Clarity brings peace. Complexity breeds chaos.
Come back to what matters most.
This week, have a think about your FAITHFUL FRIENDS
Here's the Complication: Life gets messy, we make it complicated, and sometimes - LET'S BE REAL - following God makes it complicated!
How can friends help? More importantly, how can faithful friends help?
Don't miss the observations Phil makes about these chaps... and then ask yourself these two questions:
a) Who do I see?
b) Who can I be?

In his current musings of faith made real and a life of faith being a life of obvious, observable, demonstrably faithful, Phil is still sounding a little different this week - squeaky voice and all.
In this finale to the non-series Faith Made Real, Phil draws us into a deeper connection with the biblical truth of our God-given design.
For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us]. Ephesians 2:10 (AMP)

In his current musings of faith made real and a life of faith being a life of obvious, observable, demonstrably faithful, Phil is sounding a little different this week - under the weather, you could say. But that does not stop him calling a spade a spade, quoting Jesus, Who says:
"You faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you?" Matt 17:17.
What does this mean? How can be live our lives of faith so we avoid this accusation? What is the simple key Jesus reveals to us?
Find your healing. Find your breakthrough. Lead others into theirs. He has so much more for us, if only we would not distort His reality.
In his current musings of faith made real and a life of faith being a life of obvious, observable, demonstrably faithful, Phil is calling us all sinners in the synagogue.
C'mon, aren't you also sick of all the vomit on line about the church Jesus loves?
What if we did life in such a way that allowed us to keep short account, seek honest reflection, receive loving correction, and live together with genuine accountability?
Surely this is the church Jesus desires?
Phil also answers the question "what is the key to revival" with evidence.
The story about repentance and restoration he retold can be found in this book: Keep You Love On!
In his current musings of faith made real and a life of faith being a life of obvious, observable, demonstrably faithful, Phil is wondering why those who believe in Jesus continue to live as prisoners...
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (Gal 5:1)
Why do we sit in the prison cell while the door is wide open?
Phil reads a small section from Dreaming With God.
He also promises a new book coming soon... What You See Matters... so, watch this space!

In his current musings of faith made real and a life of faith being a life of obvious, observable, demonstrably faithful, Phil is now craving koinonia community.
Join him as he shares what this looks like through a biblical lens, what the cravings are, and how they might be met.
Koinonia; the dynamic whole of Christian living, how we participate in life with one another, for the sake of one another, just to be with one another.
Are you willing to make an eager contribution to others and their spiritual formation? If so, hit me up!
Aside from spilling his tea all over his desk, Phil is currently challenging himself with some questions, hoping it leads to conviction, and that said convictions lead to compulsion to commit.
What about you? Are you willing to make your faith real?
Phil shares three keys that make faith real. Listen to them at 09:10.
Join him as he inspires us to bring heaven to earth.

This season confronts the quiet crisis in the Church: believers who love God, read Scripture, attend gatherings… yet live unsure whether God is actually speaking to them.
Prophetic Aim:
To re-normalise hearing God as foundational Christian maturity, not elite spirituality — and to activate listeners into confidence, discernment, and responsive obedience.

Friends, the Gospels repeatedly show that when people met His gaze, something changed—identity, destiny, repentance, healing, courage.

Why do we as church leaders hide the wavering of our faith when you need to see us being real? And then, why do we preach against wavering faith from the pulpit?
This series is called Apologies of a Church Leader and Phil is very open and brutally honest in apologising for a range of things. Holding nothing back, he apologises for the way he (and other leaders) act in ways that is detrimental to the church.
This is not done in criticism or cynicism, but with the hope that together we can all work in partnership to make the local church stronger.

Why do we as church leaders avoid confronting the demons who operate in our church? Please note, I'm not talking about people here, but unclean spirits that operate! (See Eph 6:12; For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.)
If we do not see or sense them, why not? And if we do, why do we not cast them down?
This series is called Apologies of a Church Leader and Phil is going to be brutally honest in apologising for a range of things. Holding nothing back, he will apologise for the way he (and other leaders) act in ways that is detrimental to the church.

Questions you can ask yourself:
Why do we as church leaders not love our people enough to discipline them? Seriously, if God loves us as sons and disciplines us accordingly (Heb 12:6) then why do we as leaders avoid this fatherly/motherly role?

Why do we, as church leaders, treat you like you're a 40-year old child still living at home? I'm really sorry we let you sit on your chuff, in the same seat each week, and never made you exercise or go outside to play with your friends.
This series is called Apologies of a Church Leader and Phil is going to be brutally honest in apologising for a range of things. Holding nothing back, he will apologise for the way he (and other leaders) act in ways that is detrimental to the church.
This is not done in criticism or cynicism, but with the hope that together we can all work in partnership to make the local church stronger.

What does it mean to puff up another? Essentially, it's the way we inflate the ego of another beyond healthy and way more than is deserved. Puffery can lead to feeling self-important; arrogant; pompous. Yikes!

Howdy and welcome to the podcast, Coffee With Phil, where we drink good coffee and talk about life and how we can make faith real.
In this episode, Phil reviews a book that has recently impacted him, pointing to the age old biblical discipline of lament, one that has been forgotten by the modern church.
Book title: Dark clouds. Deep Mercy. Author: Mark Vroegop.
Here's a few links for you to check out the book:
Author website - https://www.markvroegop.com/
Book Review - Gospel Coalition
Book Purchase via Grace Books
Book Purchase - https://amzn.asia/d/3nvzTNT
Book Quotes - https://www.crossway.org/articles/9-notable-quotes-from-dark-clouds-deep-mercy/
Here are the key points I share in this episode:
When you're desperate you pray deeper.
Lament has four parts: turn, complain, ask, trust.
Don't stop praying, push through.
Ask Boldly.
Pain is a platform for worship.
Hope springs from Truth rehearsed.
Lament is a surprising personal discovery.

EPISODE DESCRIPTION
In this episode of "Coffee with Phil," join Phil as he delves into the challenging theme of putting aside selfishness. Phil starts by acknowledging the difficulties of the world we live in and how our natural instincts, rooted in our reptilian brain, often drive us towards self-preservation. Through a personal story and introspection, Phil confronts his own selfishness and invites listeners to do the same.
Phil recounts a recent encounter with an organization aimed at helping church employees find affordable housing. While initially considering his own needs, he realized the importance of addressing selfishness and redirecting focus towards helping those truly in need.
In a thought-provoking discussion, Phil explores reasons we may struggle to trust God, from unmet expectations to holding onto past failures and fears. He emphasizes the need to prioritize loving others, drawing from biblical references that illustrate the significance of sacrificial love. Phil encourages listeners to face their weaknesses, trust God, and choose to love and serve others selflessly, ultimately guiding them towards a life marked by diminished selfishness and greater compassion.
Join Phil on this reflective journey towards putting aside selfishness and embracing a life of genuine love and service.

Faith is confusing. Often as Christians we're guilty of saying there's believers and there's unbelievers, or non-believers, or not yet believers, and that's actually rubbish, because everyone has to believe in something, and if you believe in nothing, then you're believing that nothing is more important than something. So in fact, that's your belief system.
If you find yourself struggling with faith in what you believe in, then maybe it's time for you to join Phil as he discusses how you can have faith in what you believe in, by trusting who you believe in.

When you race a motocross bike you want to have the throttle "wide open" as much as you can. That's because you want to be the fastest in order to win. But what about when your life shifts? What does it mean to live life "wide open"?
Mary Wanhill and her husband Joel lead an organisation called Youth Encounter, where they invest in young people to help them discover who they are and how to succeed. As Mary says, "When you try and uncover the gold in someone they don't mind when you remove some of the dirt."
Before Mary worked with youth she had a career racing dirt bikes and then as an international athlete completing massive jumps and tricks in the air while on her bike. No wonder they called her "Scary Mary"!
Enjoy this interview with Mary - her stories are bound to encourage you.
