She's been through a lot of ups and downs and trauma and adventures and this week we talk about how she approaches life with a body that seems to fight against her. Professional Entomologist Amy Floyd is on the show this week to talk about the importance of bees and how we can do our part - whether we have our own hives or not - to help support the bee population.

Amy has a Masters degree in Entomology and she travels the country in her converted Transit van. She's been on the show before to talk about her beginnings in vanlife and I'm happy to have her back to talk about a subject I'm so passionate about!

This week I wanted to go back to an old favorite of mine - the AMA, Ask Me Anything.

This week I answer the following questions:
-What are your thoughts on self-publishing a book of poetry or a novel?
-Advice for free car camping
-What would ten-years-younger-you be proud of?
-What fears came up during vanlife and how did/have you gotten over them?
-How do you stay focused when you have a lot going on?

I mentioned in my episode on Morning Routines that I start my day off with journaling. I've been getting a lot of questions lately about my journaling practice and wanted to tackle them here for you guys.

I go over:

-The tools needed to journal
-How to get into the habit and stay focused
-Whether I use prompts or not
-Whether I reread my entries
---and more!

I'm giving journaling prompts periodically on my Instagram page so please go follow me there to see those.

Do you journal? What does your practice look like?

Happy Pride Month Everyone! This week I wanted to give the briefest overview of the history of LGBTQ+ Liberation and Equality Movements in the United States. This is by no means a comprehensive guide to the LGBRQ+ experience but I hope that it helps inspire you to ask more questions, do more research, and embrace advocating and VOTING for equality for everyone.

Christine Reed recently underwent a procedure to have her tubes removed - a deliberate, permanent sterilization ensuring she would never have kids of her own. This week we talk about her thought process behind the decision and what factored into her choice - from her physical and mental health to her partner and their vision of their future to the current and future state of the world.

There is no one right answer for everyone. Your health and your family planning should be in your own hands.

Sam Tarell didn't have a conventional childhood. He was raised to pursue his curiosities and to be his own person - even if that meant he embraced being a bit of an outcast. His first business, Hoop Brothers, came about because his own college basketball aspirations were cut short and he didn't want the same to happen for his younger brother. After that business was successfully built, he set his sights on bigger things - DivergentU. A school to foster divergent thinking and the melding of creativity & entrepreneurship.

Listen to this week's episode to learn more about success, values, productivity & happiness from Sam's perspective.

Johnny Nocash has what you'd call a Good Life in Toronto. He was a successful musician, had a great job that afforded him the ability to live in this expensive city, a strong network of friends and connections - but he wasn't happy.

So he moved into a van and hit the road. From that first foray away from the concrete jungle, he found more meaning and freedom than ever before.

Nicole Carrillo never wanted to have kids. The more people asked her about her parenting plans or encouraged her to rethink her decision, the more she dug in her heels.

And yet she and her husband, AJ, have just celebrated the first birthday of their daughter Talulah.

In this episode, we talk with Nicole about her mindset before, during, and after pregnancy. We dive into the how's and the why's of her change of mind.

It's a very personal conversation that is also powerful and enlightening.

Both Holly & Beers got a TON out of this conversation and we hope you do too.

This episode is a little different from our normal flow and topic choices. In this one, Holly goes on a rant at the top of the show about the privilege of taking a step back from things. The hosts journey through the standard American belief system of working hard equaling "success" and the concept of rest and how natural a right it should be. They discuss how spirituality plays into these connections and start to tease out how to break the stories.

At the end of the show, the hosts want YOU to tell them what chronic frustrations you face and whether you want to be part of a storybreaking episode in the future. They also talk about ways they can create a Mutual Aid Fund specifically for helping people take breaks and rest to restore their mental and physical health and we're looking to YOU for tips and tricks and support in making this dream a reality too.

This is the last in a four-part series in which Holly & Beers discuss each of the Four Types of Freedom in more depth. This week, the hosts share different perspectives on the Freedom of Finances, the ways it can be achieved by decreasing costs and/or increasing income or wealth. They explore how the current of financial currency may actually be a continuous flow we can tap into as needed.

We’d also like to do a follow-up episode to this series as a whole to explore your questions and feedback. Follow this link to submit a video with your questions or feedback. This is the third in a four-part series in which Holly & Beers discuss each of the Four Types of Freedom in more depth. This week, the hosts share how they embody the Freedom of Creativity in their work lives, their romantic entanglements, their expression of themselves to the world, and other areas of life. They share ways in which others may find the Freedom of Creativity in unique ways depending on the needs they face. Holly & Beers also talk a lot about pb&j sandwiches.

This is the second episode in our mini-series taking a deeper dive into the Four Types of Freedom. This week Holly and Beers explore the Freedom of Location, the ways it’s been prioritized for each of them, the ways that other factors have influenced how they each exercise this freedom, and some of the ways it can be practiced outside of being a nomad.

If you’ve been listening to me for a while, you’ve heard me say that van living simplifies the complicated, and it complicates the simple. There are certainly PLENTY of things that I used to do in my sticks and bricks life that I no longer can or need to take part in. There are SO MANY things that I no longer can or have to buy.

This might sound like I live a perfectly minimalist, simplistic life - and in some ways I do, sure - but I’ve also gone ahead and complicated a lot of pieces of my life, too.

In this week’s episode, we’re going to dive into the things I no longer do or buy as a long-term, full-time van lifer. It’s a little sarcastic, it’s a little satire, it’s all honest.

“I could never do what you’re doing ALONE.” “Do you get lonely?” “I couldn’t live in a van/go hiking/go camping/do anything ALONE.”

And, to be honest. Neither could I.

Just a few years ago, my social anxiety was so bad that I couldn’t even go the grocery store alone much less go for a hike or even consider moving into a van by myself.

In this week’s episode, I want to share some of the steps I took to go from Far Too Anxious to Do Much of Anything to Totally Chill with Doing Things and Being Alone a Lot of the Time.

I wanted to create an episode where many of the FAQs and logistical questions about living in a van are all in one place. In this episode, we go over mail, insurance, electrical, water, eating healthy, gas mileage, showers, laundry, and more. As always, if you have additional questions, send 'em my way and I'll do my best to answer them!

We’re moving into the throes of summer and I’m getting started on my backpacking adventures of the season. When I talk about backpacking, I always get questions or excited responses like “oh take me next time!” or “I’ve always wanted to do that!”. I think I take it for granted that I was raised backpacking. I certainly didn’t think it was cool when I was a kid, I just wanted to stay home and hang with my friends. But now that I’m an adult, it’s one of my favorite ways to experience nature and be super cell-phone-less.

These are my top tips for anyone looking to take their first trip or three!

Social media has brought a lot of attention to vanners over the last few years and while this is largely a good thing, it also has some negative pieces to it. With the glamorization of the lifestyle, it can seem unattainable to someone who isn’t young, adventurous, and living in a coveted Sprinter van.

Bex believes whole-heartedly (and I agree) that vanning is for EVERYONE. Regardless of your background, your age, your budget, your lifestyle.

Anyone can van.

These are a few of the truths I’ve discovered in the last nearly two and a half years living in my rig and I’ve been inspired to share them by my beautiful new friend Meg who recently moved into her Ford van after listening to my podcast throughout the build!

To be honest, sometimes I forget that my lifestyle is interesting to others. To me, it’s just life. But I’m reminded that it’s not regular day-to-day for most folk and that it invites a lot of questions and curiosity.

Here are a few of the most common things I wish non-van folx knew about us vanners.

My systems for working on the road have evolved over the last few years I’ve been living in the van. I started out working remotely and I still work remotely. That means I need to stay connected to service so I can work with my clients and create my content. In this week’s episode, I’m sharing my processes from the beginning to now - how they’ve evolved and what I did to keep my income somewhat steady*.

It wasn’t until very recently - and when I say ‘very’ I mean within the last, oh, six months or so - that I was comfortable using the word ‘creative’ to describe myself.

I’ve never considered myself a creative person. I’ve never been a creative, a creator, right-brained, artistic - none of it. I was always analytical, productive, left-brained.

I envied creatives, admired them, but couldn’t be one, wasn’t one, would never be considered one.

In this episode, I share how I grew up for 31 years believing I wasn't creative, how I made the shift into owning my creativity, how I sustain & feed it and some tips on how you can develop your creativity as well.

I’ve focused the show on living deliberately and I’ve shared a lot of stories of folx living deliberately alternative lifestyles. I’ve answered a lot of questions about living in a van, working non-traditional jobs, being a nomad and creator, how I handle seemingly simple daily functions (I talk about poop so much more than I used to).

But one thing I haven’t done yet is give ya’ll some tips on how to start living deliberately TODAY.

You guys. It’s been a year that I’ve been creating and publishing this podcast. That’s crazy. When I started out with it, I didn’t have any specific goals of a timeline for the thing, I just wanted to give it a shot! I can talk about living deliberately every single day and that’s basically what I’ve been doing - and publishing it once a week for ya’ll! In this week’s episode, I’m sharing what I’ve learned over the last year, how I create the show, future plans for the podcast, and all of that fun stuff.

Short answer: There's no 'right' rig for everyone. There's no perfect van, RV, truck, vehicle - anything. YOUR needs, lifestyle, budget, abilities, time, elbow-grease, and preferences will dictate which rig will be the right one for you. In this episode, I share a few questions you need to answer in order to figure out what that best rig will be.

Geotagging is one of the most polarizing topics in the outdoor space. Some people are way for it, some are way against it. It can help places get the recognition they need to garner the proper protection and it can cause natural resources to be trampled and people to even put themselves in danger. This week, we're opening the conversation up and sharing some of what we see as the pros and cons of the practice as well as how to do it responsibly.

Matt & I had a long chat the other week which resulted in too much awesome information for a single episode. I’ve divvied our call into two episodes running this week and next and have tried to edit them such that each can be listened to on its own but they also do well as a pair.

Matt has been living on the road out of his Sprinter for three years. He’s lived in it with a partner, pets, and alone. He is a freelance videographer and is passionate about building community.

In this first episode, we chat about the first year many nomads experience on the road and how it differs from years 2 onward along with the differences of living and traveling as a couple versus as a solo person.

Sophia Tang hiked the Colorado Trail this summer in 22 days, completely unsupported. She’d never backpacked a night in her life before and she was completely unrealistic about how many miles she could pack into a single day. Her journey was about learning who she really was underneath it all and, in the end, she cherishes who she’s become more than what she’s done.

I’d originally recorded and planned on publishing this podcast a few months ago but Coronavirus took the stage and I didn’t think it was wise to share nomadic jobs since so many of them had shifted. I wanted to wait till the dust settled.

And six months later, the dust still hasn’t settled and jobs are taking on new meaning and new direction all the time. I’m going to share what I know now and in the future I may publish an updated version as things continue to evolve.

…………..

No matter what lifestyle you’re pursuing, the job thing is, well, a thing.

Being able to afford your alternative lifestyle of choice is a huge contributing factor in whether many people actually end up taking that leap or not.

In today’s episode, I outline a few of the ways I’ve seen other nomads and vagabonds take their lives on the road, to the skies, and through multiple continents. There is no one-size-fits-all recipe for affording any lifestyle, much less a deliberately alternative one.

*Vanlife could be any type of lifestyle or aspiration you’re dreaming about. When you live in a when/then paradigm, you'll never actually be happy. You need to learn to be content and grateful and happy with where and who you are now in order to really be fulfilled and happy regardless of where you are in life.

This week we've got my first Listener Q & A episode! I answer questions pertaining to eating healthy, avoiding burnout, choosing where to live, the hardest parts about building a van, how to better manage your time, and overall van-build costs when building DIY or going with a professional company. I had a lot of fun with these questions and will be incorporating more Listener Q & A episodes in the future of the podcast!

I don’t care if you’re trying to start a business, start a family, move into a van, reach FIRE, or try out for the Olympics - if you wait till you're ready, you’ll never reach your goal.

In this episode, I talk about my process for moving into the van before I was ready and how you can apply the same principles to your own life.

What would you do if you weren't afraid of being fully prepared for it?

Stephanie Sampson knew she wanted to downsize and mobilize but, like many of us, she kept pushing it off because life was getting in the way. One day, she had an enlightening, if a bit aggressive, chat with a stranger who pushed her to take steps TODAY and every day toward her dream life so that she could actually go ahead and live it. She hasn’t looked back.

Nicole Rothschild was diagnosed with a chronic illness when she was young that racked her body and left her hospitalized and bedridden for years. As she began to heal, she promised herself that she would not miss out on life, that she would live each day to the fullest, and that she would be grateful for the blessings of being alive. She moved into a van as soon as she was able to sell all of her old medical equipment and wheelchair and hasn’t looked back.

Nicole Scotti was raised in an immigrant family with the heavy expectations that often come from parents moving to the US to give their kids more opportunity. She went through all the motions, checked off all the boxes, and found herself working in a career that stifled her and brought her to tears on a near-daily basis. She decided to completely abandon the status quo and is now working fully for herself as a virtual health coach and she is LOVING every minute of life.

Emily Martin never went the traditional career route and instead opted to work with animals as an educator, trainer, dog musher, and zookeeper. While she never had an office job, she did spend most of her life working for others in the field and just a little over a year ago, she left her position at the Denver Zoo to work for herself full-time.

Nathan, who goes primarily by his last name of Beers, grew up in a strict religious household. The first few decades of his life led him to be engaged three times, divorced twice, and at his wits end for what move to make next. Beers didn’t go out deliberately looking for the nomadic life, he sort of eased into it by way of needing time and space from his most recent marriage dissolution and hopped on his motorcycle and never looked back.

Beers lived on his motorcycle for a year before upgrading to his Suburban, lovingly known as The Lunchbox.

His life has been anything but orthodox since his initial departure on his bike and even though it’s been four years, he’s not looking to get back into sticks and bricks anytime soon.

Tom left his job in a Denver restaurant to work in a support role in Antarctica for the winter of 2012.

This single seasonal contract was supposed to be a one-time gig but he’s going back for his ninth season in October, 2020.

Tom also spends his time off the ice working seasonal jobs in both Alaska and Greenland.

In our interview, we talk about his experiences in McMurdo Station, why he got cold feet the first year he wanted to go down and why he’s kept going back year after year.

Laurén and I met at the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous in January of 2020. She moved into her van after realizing that it was going to take her 15 more years of hard work to buy a crappy apartment in her home of Washington DC.

Laurén was introduced to the alternative lifestyle of tiny living while on vacation with her family and watching HGTV. She saw a truck pulling a tiny house on wheels and was instantly smitten.

Researching the logistics for tiny house living, she discovered that people actually live in vans and not just in trailers towed behind trucks. This was the route for her.

It took me a lotta years to go from van-curious to van-living.

I was first introduced to vehicle dwelling in early 2011 and didn't buy my rig until mid-2018. In those years, I waffled between being ready to take the leap and backing away from the ledge.

Once I took the plunge, I never looked back.

Living in the van is perfect for my lifestyle and for my dog.

The concept of the 4 Different Types of Freedom came to me after working with a number of clients who were all motivated by different things. We’re all driven by different goals in life and when we know ourselves best, we can make better decisions for ourselves and our futures.

Knowing what motivates you can help you determine which paths to take and which to avoid. It can help you keep moving toward your goals even when inspiration gets low.

The 4 Types of Freedom Are:

  1. Freedom of Time
  2. Freedom of Location
  3. Freedom of Creativity
  4. Freedom of Finances

I’ll go into each of these more in-depth to clarify what they all mean and how you can tap into the main one or two priorities for you.

This is the introductory episode in which I explain the how and why behind this new venture.

Deliberate Living is a podcast that explores and celebrates all of the ways people are living deliberately alternative lifestyles.

Since there’s no recipe for any other kind of lifestyle than the one we've been raised with, we’re all making it up as we go and figuring it out along the way. This podcast will highlight those stories and the myriad of ways people make alternative lifestyles work.
