Romans 8 is a manifesto on the call of all who are saved to live the Spiritual Life. Not that it is a choice, in the strictest sense, because all who are "in Christ Jesus" will walk "after the Spirit." What is a "Spiritual Life" then? A spiritual life is one in which the believer, indwelt by God's Spirit, is daily acting in faith, being moved by hope, and growing in identity with, awareness of, and obedience to Jesus Christ. Spiritual life is a life in which we are being led by, filled with, and taught by the Holy Spirit of God to be "in Christ!"

This is about timing not time. Do not mistake God's intentionality for slowness. God is not slow. He made light speed!

The question is, at what speed are we living life? The speed of sound, the speed of the Smartphone, or the speed of God?

There is a great lesson we can take from this study, that you, me, nor anyone is going to hurry God! When it comes to God’s plan for the world, for your life, or for your child's life, you can disobey God, you can get ahead of God, you can fall behind God, but you will not hurry God!

We are learning about waiting, trusting, conforming, and being renewed; because, after all, God is going to do what he promised, and even through the bumbling and fumbling of Abraham, the grace of God will prove sufficient.

Every phase of life offers us new challenges and difficulties. That's the reality of living in a broken, fallen world. So what are we to do? How do we not only survive, but thrive in the difficult life we have not only been given, but called to?

Ten years is a long time to wait, particularly when you have trusted God, uprooted your family, and journeyed by faith into a place you had no knowledge of and no connection to, other than the promise from God that he would make you the father of a great nation by giving you a son.

Ten years is long enough to take anyone to the precipice of either Getting Ahead of God or of Abandoning their Faith altogether! Yet, waiting has a way of weeding out the faithlessness. When we wait on God this is not killing time, it is, as we are learning from Abram and Sarai, a season of refining, and of bringing the dross of faithlessness, idolatry, and of fear and doubt to the surface so God can remove it.

What you have before you, in this Action/Adventure chapter, is a man who is growing in grace, a man who is being changed by his walk with God. It has been months, perhaps years, since that flight in fear down to Egypt. Over that time Abram has been learning to trust God. In this chapter there are five marks of that growth evident in how Abram responds to the crisis.

We have all heard it said, "He/she has backslided." What does that mean? In short, there was once a time and place in life where that person was walking closer to God than they are now. There are people, perhaps listening right now, who are living like Abram in Egypt. You have compromised your faith, fearful that life was not going to work out, or that you would lose what you had, and in desperation you have turned to the world for support, supply, or comfort.

Maybe you have made hasty decisions, gotten ahead of God, and now you do not know how to recover. Maybe there is sin dominating your life right now. Maybe you are living with anxiety and fear so you are “coping” by surrendering your soul to a life that looks like what God saved you out of.

And it is costing you. It is costing you a life of living in the fullness of joy, the restfulness of peace, and the grandeur of God’s exceeding riches of grace! There is a way back from the backsliding. God’s grace is just as sufficient to receive you, cleanse, renew you, and set you back up in His perfect will, as it was the day you first trusted in the Lord!

What makes a hero? Heroes are not the ones who soar in at times of trouble and rescue us from all our troubles. Heroes are not the people who look, act, and think perfectly. They are not flawless; they are not always right. That would not be a hero, that would be an imagined idol.

Heroes are people who fall but do not stay down. Heroes are people who make mistakes but learn from them. Heroes are real people, with real weaknesses, who, by way of trial and error, recovery and resolve, become stronger and wiser, and in turn, they help others to find the way through the troubles and trials of life. This is what makes Abraham a true hero of the faith!

The Journey Begins, or Resumes, everyone of us needs one of those things to be true about our life. Maybe today is the day you will decide to leave the old life behind, the worldly life, the soul vexing life. Or maybe, for some of us, today is the day we are done with settling for partial obedience and we are going to grab what God gave us, and move forward in God’s call, totally surrendered to the life he has intended for us. Either way, one word that describes it is Leaving!

The greatest cost of the world on our lives, is that it takes us from the love of the Father! When we are pursuing the godless systems, the lusts and pride of socially organized flesh, we are not loving our Father as we should and could. Is there a greater transgression than this? And so, we need to consider this Babel of the world and what towers of godlessness may be standing in our life and really commit to asking God to bring them down so that we, like Abram, can find ourselves on the journey of the pilgrim life with God.

We do not naturally love those that are not family and friends. We tend to shy away from loving the unlovely and sinful, but those are the exact people Jesus has called us to love. In this message, Missionary Dwight Tomlinson offers four words to show how Christians can have a heart for the world:

  1. Look
  2. Pray
  3. Give
  4. Go

The church plays a vital, yet often overlooked, role in the growth and development of the believer. We have relegated this vital institution as little more than a convenient gathering and social activity. But what does edifying truly look like? How are we, each day, to allow others to play a role in our spiritual development, as well as intentionally enter into the same work in others?

As a church we have had, in recent times, a heavy focus on that middle part of the Great Commission, “teaching them to observe (that is, to do) all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (v.20a) and we have not “scratched the surface” of the need in this. But, mission month is the call to pull back from my emphasis on the training side of discipleship, and remember that there is an evangelistic side of discipleship. In fact, doing all the things which Jesus said, would include, in a large way, the work of evangelism, and not just a corporate thing where the church is doing it, but a personal thing, where each one of us is doing it, just as Jesus taught us.

Let us leave on the table, as a point of fact, that not everyone in the local assembly is called to “Go” somewhere as a missionary. Yet, we can , and must, consider these three things which every one of us are called to…

  1. Give in the Spirit

  2. Grow in the Faith

  3. Glory in the Lord

As you look at much of the missions work and the missionaries going out today, most of them are going to places where the gospel has already gone. Now, we are glad for what has been done and is still being done in all those places, but what about the other places?

Current reports have it at anywhere from 1-3.5% of missions giving goes to unreached areas. I believe Paul had a relentless drive to take the gospel to the people and places the gospel had not yet been, not for his own glory, but for the glory of God! We too should, and can, share in this holy desire and in 2 Corinthians, which may be called a "Global Missions Manual," the apostle gives us some very specific ways in which we can truly extend our reach into the regions beyond.

Be Ready! Jesus says, because you know I am returning, and you know now what will happen, what to expect, you know that you must be ready for that day. But since we do not know when the day will be we must live ready every day in order to be ready for that day.

How many of you, like me, would say, “I am not living as ready as I know I should, and to be fair to my heart, I am not living as ready as I know I could?” But we can say, “Lord, that is how I want to live! Though I am not there, I still fail and live too often like the bound guy, the one under the weight of his besetting sin, than living like the holy guy who is actually free and made new in Christ." So, what can we do? How can we live ready so that we are ready?

Jesus invites all to come to him, to follow him, and to abide in him. He says Come and be Saved! Follow and be Saved! Abide and be Saved!

We Come to Him to be Received, we Follow Him to be Remade, and we Abide in Him to be Resourced, For, only as we abide in Him do we truly receive everything needed to bear fruit for the glory of God, and everything required to live real life!

Why is it then, that we sometimes seem to be under such a heavy yoke and such a difficult load? What gets us out from under Jesus’ yoke and back trying to pull our own? In other words...What are the unnecessary burdens which we find ourselves bearing, and to which Jesus offers us this exchange?

Can anyone claim to be righteous? In this message, Missionary John Alvies reminds us that every Christian is righteous because Christ is the foundation of our righteousness. Jesus Christ became sin for us so that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

Here we are, one week into the New Year and for most, it is customary to begin the year setting some goals, deciding to live better, to become more of the person we long to truly be. Now, it makes sense to start with prayer because prayer is where all our life in the kingdom of God, in the way of Christ, must begin. There is absolutely nothing else which is more fundamental and necessary to the devout life than prayer. And in terms of learning to do all the things Jesus taught and did, there is nothing for which we have a more direct starting point than prayer.

No matter to what level you may make plans, set goals, or determine some resolutions for the New Year, we likely all have some expectations and hopes as we come into it. James offers us a very powerful approach to planning for the New Year in James 4, but long before we can even start planning, we have some other matters we must deal with!

In the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life, George Bailey thinks everyone in his life would have been better off had he never been born, but he gets the chance to see what the world would have been like without him. George affects innumerable lives, like a ripple through a pond, but think of the unfathomable hole in the world had there never been the birth of Jesus.
It's quite a weighty thing to consider, and in a word, we might think, hopeless.

But thank God for the unspeakable gift, Christ was born and because he came, because the Word became flesh, we live with eternal hope as we celebrate this Christmas season!

But there is one thing that must be true, we must agree to do it TOGETHER!

Any renovation project includes two phases. Phase One is where the old and useless or hazardous parts get identified, ripped out, torn down, and taken away. Next, and only after all that, comes Phase Two, where the new, better, stronger, and beautiful is brought in and put together, so that the end result is the very essence of the word Renovate…“to restore to a former better state.” So, here we are, with this challenge before us, in this season as a church, "Will we Make the Turn?"

Prayer can sometimes feel like nothing more than a religious exercise. Yet the pages of Scripture remind us time and again that prayer is a powerful weapon in the arsenal of the child of God. The key is understanding both the purpose of intercessory prayer, as well as its practice.

That phrase may resonate with you in different ways, particularly for sports fans, as "making the turn" is often used to express a point in the event where a significant moment arrives that action must be taken and by that, success or failure will be determined. The church is at that point. The turn is being made by so many, but there is a right turn and a wrong turn. Which will we make?

Enthusiasm! Now this is a word that has changed meaning over time. In our day, when we hear about someone’s enthusiasm, or being enthusiastic, we think of excitement, celebration, just spun up about something, mostly in a good sense. It comes from a Greek word meaning, to be “inspired or possessed by a god.” A way we might understand it is, to be in God and God in me in whatever I am doing. Or as they said about Jesus, “He has been consumed by God!”

This week's sermon is from McLeansville Baptist Church's 80th Homecoming.

Dr. Alton Beal answers the question, "Who is God?" from Isaiah 33:22. This text provides four responses about who God is:

  1. He is our Judge
  2. He is our Lawgiver
  3. He is our King
  4. He is our Savior

Our example for every facet of our lives is Jesus. He offers us life, not only eternal, but also abundant in this life. The key to tapping into that abundant life is to be filled with God's love. How did Jesus display that love, and what should we be motivated to do as we follow His example?

Worship is Primary! The purpose of our existence is to worship God! Our life will never be satisfying until we are living fully for His Glory! Creation knows it! The heavens, the oceans, the forests, the mountains, the rivers, all of it is addressed in these psalms (Psalm 95-100) as being worshippers of God! You may ask how does a tree or a river worship God? It is just this simple, they respond to the greatness of God by doing what they were made to do which in turn brings glory to Him!

Worship is a gift which God has given to us to redirect our hearts from the dark and difficult side of life back to His goodness and glory! So, it is a gift from God to us, which we then return to Him! Worship is for our Good and God’s Glory!

Everyone needs a brotherhood, or a sisterhood, and I am speaking specifically of the brotherhood found in the household of faith. We need men, or women, to stand beside us, and for whom we can stand with. There is absolutely no one who can live for God as they should, apart from a brotherhood, or sisterhood, as it is depicted in the scriptures.

Hypocrisy is pretending to be something one is not, or pretending to believe something one does not actually believe.  A hypocrite performs publicly for the recognition (an actor, a role player), but in secret their lives are quite different from what their public persona displays.

“What do they think of me, what will they say about me?” has done more harm than can be estimated in the church, but Jesus is making clear that while there are, and will be, those in the realm of religion who will put on the appearance of a true disciple, but who will, in actual practice, be unfaithful to the faith they profess, his word to true disciples is, “Do not be a Hypocrite! Do not play the part of a disciple, be a true disciple!”

A "house divided" is a fitting description of what we feel in our struggle with the sin that persistently plagues us; the besetting sin as we know it. It is good that we know what it is, because when we know it then we can seek the power to change. But what is the power to real change? We have all experienced the loop of trying harder only to fail again, rinse, repeat.

Jesus is giving us the answer here. Briefly stated, you can clean up your act, clean out your closet, but if all you have is an orderly and clean house, it won’t be long until the enemy returns. Only Jesus is strong enough to keep the house, what we need is to find our way into being with Jesus, possessed by Jesus, and obeying Jesus in all things.

When we think of rejoicing, what comes to mind? Births, weddings, parties, and wins! We may be excited, we may celebrate, and we may have fun, and yet, all of that could happen in the context of worldliness and of the flesh, but that would not be rejoicing. In the realm of spiritual truth, rejoicing is always focused on God. I may be excited for a vacation, I may have fun at a birthday party, I may find pleasure in a lazy Sunday afternoon, but if I am to rejoice in it,  then I am going to need a heart set on God in my vacation, or party, or lazy Sunday afternoon. All joy comes from God, and from God alone!

In this Psalm we are given three, often repeated in scripture, reasons that we can rejoice in God and offer Him all the glory and praise! He is worthy of it all!

Special closing message by Missionary Charlie Russell from the Way of Holiness Conference.

Everything in the Bible is pointing us to Jesus Christ who is our Lord and Savior, the Shepherd, and Bishop of our Souls. And that is certainly true in this great chapter of Isaiah 35. The rejoicing of the desert, the strengthening of the weak, the healing of the broken, and the very way of holiness itself, all come by Christ. There is no other way.

But, if we are honest, never in the history of the church has this way seemed so foreign and so out of sync with even the culture of Christianity, much less that of the world. Given that, never has a generation of God’s people had a greater need, or opportunity, to live in this Way of Holiness than we do today.  And we are called to pursue life in this Way!

Hosea is a study in the danger of not having true knowledge. When God shakes things up it tends to upset our belief system, our theology, and this happens because we believe what we believe and we have set our hope in what we believe, so we can get really upset when God does something that does not fit our belief system. So we assume others are wrong and often point fingers and blame rather than stop and consider what God may be doing.

There are three things to consider in this message:

  1. That we have Learned God Wrong or Incompletely.
  2. That we have Misunderstood the meaning of the World
  3. That we have Accepted a Religious Belief System rather than Knowledge of God.

If we are serious about knowing God and making Him known, there is only one course of action for our life, "Dwell in God," which is to dwell in Love!. And we are coming to understand that love is neither emotion nor action, but it is the essential life of God abiding in us. To Love is to Abide in God and to Abide in God is to Love.

What is the essence of a Berean Believer? It is to have an active, hungry, daily, diligent engagement with the scriptures. Jesus tells us to "lay up our treasure in heaven." Why? Because wherever our treasure is, that is where our heart will be, and ultimately, that is his greatest interest, our heart! The greatest treasure our heart can hold is the loving, valuing, and desiring of Christ above everything else. But how can we do that? What does it look like to treasure Christ above all else?

To “abide,” is to remain, to stay with, or even more simply and powerfully said, it is to be; to be there, to be with, to be constant. This is how Jesus describes the relationship he intends for us to have with him. To simply dwell in and with the presence of Jesus, to hear him, love him, and learn from him, is the most necessary thing for your soul; but it is also the most opposed.

Sometimes we may get the impression that God’s blessings just roll out freely upon us, as if purely by grace. Is that right? Of course, it is, on one hand! But there is also, on the other hand, a level of the blessed life that only comes to those who pursue it, and the Personal Responsibility (PR) expected of those who would live in that level of blessing is laid out in these first Psalms.

As I read the gospels, and into Acts for that matter, I have been struck with the impression that in the days of the early church, the people were simply taken with the heart of this man Jesus! There are numerous passages which show that those who had genuine encounters with Jesus were deeply stirred for him, and toward him. Yet, just to pause and reflect on where the church seems to be today, I am wondering if somewhere along the way, Christianity, or our form of it, lost Christ.

The Christians Peter is addressing were living in the outlying regions of Roman rule, during the time of Nero’s reign, and the persecutions were real. In the city of Rome Christians were being put to death, but all over the Empire Christians were being ostracized, they were being (just as Jesus had said) put out of society. They were losing positions, property, and rights as citizens because they were followers of Jesus' way.
What were they to do? How should they respond? Peter is writing to them to offer Encouragement to Endure Suffering and Persecution, and to do so as followers of Jesus! They were not encouraged to be angry or demand their rights (Consider 1:5-9; 3:9-17; 4:1-2, 12-19), but rather, Peter is saying, “Rejoice in your Suffering! Be glad in your Persecution! When they cast you out, count it glory! When they take your property, be thankful you have been freed! When they take your rights, rejoice in the Citizenship you have in Heaven! Count it the greatest blessing that you are being freed from this world’s hold and loosed to pursue life in Christ, with Christ!” The surrender is not to the world, but to the will of God! Rather than being hostile in return, the message for them, and us, is to pursue and display Holiness in a Hostile World:

A question to consider and ask constantly, is “What is Spiritual Life?” and while the words or phrase, “Spiritual Life” is not found in our text, what we have is a very detailed, very helpful explanation of a spiritual life. A simple but solid definition would be that spiritual life is life lived in and with God. It begins with being “born again,” as Jesus described (John 3). Which means that once I truly have believed from the heart on Jesus, there is an eternity changing transformation which God has started in my life. The Spirit of God comes to dwell in me.

Sexual sins, fornication, are a major issue addressed in the scriptures, and we need to take this very serious. Holiness is the call on our lives, it is what God wants for us. But holiness means not only responding the right way to temptation, but it also requires us doing the preemptive work. It means that we must begin to think about what needs to be cleared out.

Before we can know and live in the will of God in any other way, we must first know that it is God’s will that we believe on Jesus and be saved in him! There is an obvious question which must be asked and each one of us must search our heart and know the answer, that is, Do You Believe On Jesus, Are You Truly Saved in the Will of God? For this is the will of God, that everyone who sees and believes on Jesus will have eternal life!

Have you ever been around those people who seem to have a life just filled with “God things?” Every time you talk with them, they have a story about an encounter with God, a lesson God taught them, an experience of God manifesting himself in their life, and the question is, why does that happen so much for certain people? Jesus said, "if any man will do his will," meaning, Willing is the Key to Knowing! If the posture of the heart is, “I am willing Lord, I am ready to go, ready to serve, ready to give, whatever you ask Lord!” Then that person will know the will of God. Jesus taught us that the posture of our heart is most important.

If the glory of God is our highest purpose, then the will of God must be our chiefest pursuit. Our lives are wasted whenever we do anything for any other reason than for the glory of God! We were created for God’s glory and it is only by our living in and doing the will of God that we bring the fullest measure of glory to God. To get it right I want to live in the will of God every day, yes, every second! It is a huge undertaking, it seems impossible, and we may wonder, "Who can really live this way?" Actually, we all can.

This is, indisputably, a passage that blows the mind of anyone who seriously wants to be true to God and follow Jesus well! “How? Tell me how Jesus did this! How did he ‘do always those things that please’ the Father?” For this is what the devout and holy life looks like, and it is not easily attained or maintained. It is not a life lived with a casual approach to faith or a minimal effort and interest in God and his will. For we see in Jesus’ life that doing the will of his Father was the sustenance of his life (John 4:34), it was the what he sought after as the priority of his life (John 5:30), and it was his joyful purpose for living (John 6:38). We should want our life to be defined by this same Supremacy of the Will of God, just like Jesus’ life was.

Has there been controversy over communion? From Roman Catholicism to the Protestant Reformation, to the Evangelical movement of our time, this thing of eating the Lord’s body and drinking his blood has been very much debated over. Yet, the greatest controversy over communion in our churches today is the ignorance and indifference towards the Lord’s Table, grown through the generations of the church, in which we do not see the relevance, seriousness, and the magnificence of this ordinance, as we call it.
