You can take a car to Clarkstown
You don’t need to take the train
You know I never got to go down
But I miss it just the same
I don’t want to go to Austin
I don’t need to go to France
Just want to sit on solid ground
With the sun against my back
I know it by every word was ever wrote
And every bad luck tale at the end of a short rope
So if you see I’m gone when you’re coming round to meet
Where the heather meets the flagon is where I’m going to be
Set sail for the arctic circle
Be sure to dress up warm
Hope you like the color purple
Get ready for some storms
So pick up that old trowel
Please put down that dull axe
That seed will never sprout ’round here
Mark Clarkstown on the map
I know it by every word was ever wrote
And every bad luck tale at the end of a short rope
So if you see I’m gone when you’re coming round to meet
Where the heather meets the flagon is where I’m going to be

Slipped into town after midnight
The wind slid in tight from the east
Nothing was lit in this dark little place
I was so looking forward to sleep
The grounds were soaked, the path hidden
Her face it was shadowed by curls
A candle had been lit in the window
Weathered map of a long since past world
A week is a wink to a lifetime
A day is wind-whispered prayer
A moment the tip of a lifeline
A thought, a lost breeze in the air
Been working my way down the Highline
Scrambling for something to eat
Thirsty in spite of the water
Trying to find its way to my feet
Longing for some kind of attention
Thinking about something sweet
Looking back up over my shoulder
She’s making her own way down the street
A week is a wink to a lifetime
A day is wind-whispered prayer
A moment the tip of a lifeline
A thought, a lost breeze in the air
I knew she was somebody different
I could tell by the way that she peeked
Out from her hood, eyes sparkle green
All that was out there was me
Hiked up the mountain where the river dove down
The carve of the rock incomplete
Seemed like this must be Carolina
Falls The rush of the water retreats
Carolina Falls, but she pulls herself back
From the edge of the edge of the peak
Carolina Falls, and if it’s going my way
I’ll be there for a kiss on the cheek
A week is a wink to a lifetime
A day is wind-whispered prayer
A moment the tip of a lifeline
A thought, a lost breeze in the air
A thought, a lost breeze in the air

Crow black as night glints in the light
Of the moon rising over my shoulder
Been here so long, focused and strong
Back against the cool of this boulder
The hot desert wind is raising the dust
From a half moon we carved in the dark rock
The air feels like nothing but our heat standing up
Like time here has crawled to a full stop
Brush the night sky and paint me a star
Night so close wants to blanket our bodies
Lay here with you when the black goes so dark
Your bright eyes a cascade of diamonds
Sleep by the fire at the mouth of a cave
Waiting for someone to show us their face
Fall into silence, drop ourselves down
Bury the back of our heads in the ground break
Got all my memories tied up with string
In a box hidden deep in my closet
All that I have had does not mean a thing
If I didn’t have you here to look at
Brush the night sky and paint me a star
Night so close wants to blanket our bodies
Lay here with you when the black goes so dark
Your bright eyes a cascade of diamonds
Too dead for dreaming
Too tired to die
Just give me a ring
I’ll be there by your side
Walked twenty-nine hours
In a blue checked shirt
Look to the horizon
Sea of red dirt
When will I find you?
Are you buried in the dust?
With the wings of an angel
And a halo of rust
Walk to the cliff’s edge
Nothing but the sea
Dotted with white caps
Waving to me
Peek around the corners
Shuffle down the street
Look up to the heavens
Looking down on me
How long until I find you?
Are you buried in the dust?
With the wings of an angel
And a halo of rust
Too dead for dreaming
Too tired to die
Just give me a ring
I’ll be there by your side
Just give me a ring
I’ll be there by your side
Last time I saw Judas, he told me not to bother
He had given all his answers, was forsaken by his brother
He has told all of his stories, none of us were listening
We had turned him into mud, we had turned ourselves against him
Looking for the water turned to stone
Water turned to stone
There were times that I could see him, before the darkness came to meet me
I sank into the swamp, pushed through the reeds and
Awoke, I was alone upon the shore and facing leeward
The storm revealed the sun until my face was all but fevered
Thirsty for the water turned to stone
Water turned to stone
Lightning is the string between the earth stretched to the ether
Flies down like a bat sings and is gone before you need it
I am reaching out my hand to catch a tendril of the flicker
This road is paved with brambles, black vines bloom scarlet flowers
Who shall drink the water turned to stone
Water turned to stone
Last time I saw Jesus, he told me not to bother
He had given all his answers, was forsaken by his father
He has told all of his stories, none of us were listening
We had turned him into god, we had turned ourselves against him
Now he turns all of our water into stone
Water into stone
She lives in the tropic of cancer
He floats in a dingy at large
What in the world would the chance be
They meet where there’s no one in charge
You think you know something of beauty
You say you know nothing of fear
Doubt spreads its wings like a Mayfly
If only her past weren’t so dear
How did these paths intermingle?
A confluence at Tumbledown Creek
Gnarled as a Dragon’s claw willow
Four hours, three days, and one week
The most elegant dress in your closet
Is dying to go out tonight
Your shoes glitter bright in the corner
Hoping to shine in the light
He’s always been passively social
He thinks about nothing but flight
Bus pass shoved deep in his pocket
A red velvet patch on one eye
How did these paths intermingle?
A confluence at Tumbledown Creek
Gnarled as a Dragon’s claw willow
Four hours, three days, and one week
She lives in the tropic of cancer
He floats in a dingy at large
What in the world would the chance be
They meet where there’s no one in charge
They meet where there’s no one in charge
Captain, my captain, what is our bearing
We go through the Straits of Gibralter
Where the sirens are wailing and the jagged rocks beckon
And we try to stay out of the water
Put the wax in your ears, you do not wish to hear
The song of the siren so telling
We will pass close to them, but whatever I’ve said
Don’t us let any out of the mooring
Lash yourselves fast, to the strength of the mast
If you dare take a chance with their singing
But their beauty is lost once yer hung on their claws
And you’ll not be alive in the morning
But what if I was the strongest of them all
Could hold onto life oh so tightly
She will dig into me, but I would later break free
Swim on back to the ship in the morning
The waves start to push the ship to the shore
And the crew throws to port and then starboard
These rocks try to tear the timber from her
The air filled with song from their harbor
We can see them on the rocks, in the sea, and in the grottos
A beauty that is almost unspeakable
It’s just like the ship is hearing all this
and lists to the shore to release us
Not one of my men who heard them that day
Stayed long on the ropes that had bound them
A splash in the water, then a sudden pull under
In the beautiful arms of a siren
But what if I was the strongest of them all
Could hold onto life oh so tightly
She will dig into me, but I would later break free
Swim on back to the ship in the morning
When the ship it was found, she had been run aground
And the crew was but starfish and a spyglass
But the legends all thrill that the captain was still
In the arms of the queen of the sirens
The legends all thrill that the captain was still
In the arms of the queen of the sirens
He’s the dungaree kid
Sliding through the crowd
Ain’t got nothing
Daddy was a clown
Grew up in the circus
Where everything is loud
Seems a little nervous
About the distant, darkening clouds
Lucinda lost her left eye
Little Johnny’s got the crabs
Nobody wants to be here
But his mother, and her man
Lily left Sunday evening
With the world’s strongest man
Walked out through the forest
With a hammer in his hand,
oh lord With a hammer in his hand
He’s the dungaree kid
Sliding through the crowd
Ain’t got nothing
Daddy was a clown
Rain hits hard from heaven
Thunder rumbles down
Lightning stabs the big top
Burns it, to the ground
Saw the kid this morning
By the side of the road
Didn’t want to wake him up
He was dressed in some, pretty nice clothes
Put a coin in his back pocket
Took his watch and his chain
I’ll make it up somehow
Whenever I see him, again
He’s the dungaree kid
Sliding through the crowd
Ain’t got nothing
Daddy was a clown
Got some unfinished business
I never called out your name
Lord I wish there was a witness
Cause I don’t want to take the blame!
Got some unfinished business
Never wrote down what I felt
Thought I knew what I was saying
Come to believe that I did not
Never meant to lose you
Fallen deep into my arms
Never meant to wander off into the dark
Hear the lone coyote’s call!
Searching my drawers for an answer
Searching my pockets for a pen
Got some unfinished business
Might have to start it all again!
As I look up from this paper
The walls are darker than the night
Ain’t no movement in the back room
Burned out candle, got no light
Never meant to lose you
fallen deep into my arms
Never meant to wander off into the dark
Hear the lone coyote’s call!
No last will, I got no testament
Got a plague to end all plagues
As someone’s god might be my witness
I won’t be buried in this grave!
Got some unfinished business
I never called out your name
Lord I wish there was a witness
Cause I don’t want to take the blame!
Lord I wish there was a witness
Cause I don’t want to take the blame!
Had to run, I cannot hide
Bathed by all this southern light
Step outside to bum a ride
From Georgia
Thought I’d won but now I’m lost
Those who wander often cross
Into these dim forgotten thoughts
Of Georgia
When I go to sleep tonight
If I have to weep tonight
You won’t hear a peep tonight
Sweet Georgia
Step right up into my face
Tell me it will go away
Don’t believe it, not today
You’re lying
See your face in every veil
Toss a coin into the well
Another wish to break the spell
I’m trying
When I go to sleep tonight
If I have to weep tonight
You won’t hear a peep tonight
Sweet Georgia
