KK047 | Marlee (@animalbasedalice) and I talk a lot about jiujitsu in this episode and start with the importance of play. We also talk about realism / totality in self defense training such as not underestimating anyone or assuming what they do or don't know. We also talk about coaching / teach inefficiencies and how to learn to learn better. A topic I'm always glad to discuss is how we can escape our "human zoo." We also cover macronutrient ratios for fertility, real superfoods, and multi-day / extended fasting.

Welcome to the show, Marlee (@animalbasedalice)! Right away we get into talking about her struggles with anxiety, depression, PCOS, thyroid imbalances, acne, and much more. We also quickly get into balancing nutritional and "mainstream" interventions for those problems (therapy and / or medication); as well as the biases of respective providers. Importantly, we discuss how "biohacking" is really about living in an ancestrally congruent way (taking away noise rather than adding shortcuts). Of course, you should avoid seed oils (and bread) like the plague! Speaking of plagues, we talk about making your health a political statement -- since some see fit to mandate it for you -- and why eating healthy is not expensive. At the end of the episode I do a quick skim of literature reviewing claims that Alzheimer's Disease is "Type 3 Diabetes."

Part 2 with @thecarnivorehippie featuring discussions about eating healthy "being expensive", voting with your dollars, and eating raw meat / organs. Of course, we continue emphasizing feeling connected to and being part of nature rather than being relegated to our concrete jungles, cubicles, and faux-meat. We go at length to talk about toxic people (of any ideology; vegan, carnivore, or otherwise), leading by example and putting forth what you want to find in the world. Of course, the punchline is trying to achieve our "natural state"; mentally, spiritually, physically, communally.

The Kombat Kitchen returns with Sweta, aka @thecarnivorehippie! We talk about a wide variety of topics centered around feeling connected to your mind, heart, body, the planet, and other people. In no small due to overcoming things like disordered eating, PTSD, ulcers, and addiction; Sweta has made some remarkable changes and has great insight into breathing and meditation practices, not as another "thing" on an endless "to-do" list, but an embodiment and enrichment of spirit. We also talk about her transition from low carb to keto to carnivore and the respective changes in mood and hormone balance.

Max, @animalbasedlifestyle, and I continue our discussion talking about regenerative agriculture and the importance of "voting with your dollars" to avoid censorship. We also talk about balancing "the wheel of health" that is, spiritual, community, performance, career, family, etc. In addition we talk about addictive personalities and and the pitfalls of moderation. Very interestingly, we talk in the end about the psychological aspects of competing in BJJ that have nothing to do with your opponent and everything to do with your supergo's judgments of yourself.

Max, @animalbasedlifestyle, is blue belt in BJJ, but has been at it for almost a decade. We talk about how training modalities and gyms have changed over the years and with our age. Moreover, we talk about the misinformation and intentional misleading messages in the media, from the clothes and magazines we're being sold to the (more insidious) pharmaceutical and food industries. Max talks about his transition from a very unhealthy lifestyle, to plant-based efforts, and eventually sticking with an animal-based lifestyle (as his handle implies).

What is "greenwashing"? Simply put, it's using fictitious, misleading, or vague claims to exaggerate the environmental and / or health benefits of a product, services, or company. In other words, lying. In many cases the goal of greenwashing isn't to sell you a "cleaner" or better product, it's to sell you (on the belief that the company is making efforts towards your and the planet's health). I cover several big name companies who have settled litigation from greenwashing, though I'm sure they were aware of the financial risks prior, as well as resources for you to DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH when it comes to fluffy, feel-good language, and third party testing -- be that in food, cosmetics, or cleaning products. As promised, here's my full-length review of the the response article I wrote addressing the recent buzz about Vitamin A toxicity. The short version is that there are many confounding variables in the research (such as grain and soy consumption, "fortified" cereal / grains, un/healthy user biases, cows vs. polar bears, supplements vs. whole foods, etc.). My biggest contention with the podcast that spurred a lot of this is that the speaker specifically stated that he's "not (excluding Vitamin A) for his health, but to prove a point." Vegans are trying to prove a point. Ancel Keys and Harvey Kellogg were trying to prove points. We need to be able to separate our feelings from facts and not conflate "questioning the status quo" with dramatical click-bait and other appeals to emotion.

Maya (@meat.your.potential) continue our discussion about the negative impact of western nutritional advice on indigenous tribes (specifically regarding overfeeding and undernourishment) similarly recreating the dietetic crisis of our "civilized" world. We also talk about research hierarchies and being able to examine things at a micro and macro level. Of course, we talk a bit about Vitamin D, cholesterol, and sunburn risks as well. Lastly, we discuss the "science" of behavior change and how our brains and bodies have been hijacked by artificially enhanced sources (e.g. "artificial flavors", 24/7 "news" streams, 24/7 "social" media, etc...).

This week's episode features Australian carnivore and archaeologist Maya (@meat.your.potential). We talk about her negative experiences with vegetarianism and the food pyramid as a child including the absence of nutritional considerations in psychiatry. We briefly discuss the recent Vitamin A buzz that's been going around. We cover, as well, the evolutionary inconsistencies of ancient tubers and modern fruits / vegetables as well as the unsustainability of gathering (without hunting). Most interestingly we talk at length about post WWII agriculture and the negative effects of "modern" society on indigenous tribes such as the Hadza and Aborigines.

Luis (@lriv214) and I continue our conversation about nutrition misconceptions that have been embedded in American culture as well as the failed paradigms that our government is married to (e.g. "a calorie is a calorie", "eat less, move more", etc.). We also talk about Luis's performance changes on high vs. low carb eating habits and dive into a few different sleep protocols (which of course include an animal-based diet). Lastly, we talk about balancing complicated work schedules with family and children in addition to "The Land of Opportunity."

Luis (@lriv214), is a BJJ brown belt and we talk about our experiences starting MMA in the "middle ages" with plenty of sketchy promotions, concussions, and Fight Club garage gyms. Of course, we also talk about how his nutrition has changed regarding cutting weight, but also differences and conflicts with cultural origins and family members caused by eating habits and "modernized" western influences. Lastly we rap about the education system in the US as well as what to and when to feed kids "treats."

As Mother's Day approaches I present this short mini-pod reflecting on a case that illustrates that complexity and sometimes venom in our family relationships; including the symbolic relationship of supervisor and supervisee. As the expression goes, you should count the wrinkles and scars on a man's face; because those are where decisions were made. Sometimes we're all to noble in spite of ourselves.

Interestingly enough, we also talk about animal-based nutrition for young children as well, something you can read more about on my website or e-books.

Rick and I have been friends for a long time and he's had an amazing health journey, gaining and losing 70 lbs over the last 10 years. In this episode we talk about animal-based nutrition (January is worldwide carnivore month by the way) and compromises for the sake of social and mental health. Following up on the the "reputation" episode I talk about the many successes I've had in what most would consider a catastrophic 2020. I'm not looking for pats on the back, so I temper the success with descriptions of some of the many struggles I encountered in 2020 as well. I harp on discipline, "making yourself", and creating your happiness. Ironically, the reverse isn't true. While you are responsible for your happiness, you're not necessarily responsible for your unhappiness. There is, nevertheless, plenty of bad shit that happens to all of us, should you choose to be condemned by it. This was a fun one because Liam and I had never met before, yet through the wonders of social media our paths crossed due to similar interests in carnivorous diets, martial arts, and philosophy -- we'r both 32 as well! Liam is a health coach on MeatRx.com and is based out of El Paso , TX. Of course, we talked about our respective paths to carnivory, but we also talk about our mental health, family dynamics, and the evil maleficent people that exist in the world and developing self awareness and discipline through combat sports. We also talk about the importance of building a community staying connected to people in real life. As usual we lighten the mood in the third segment with a lightning round and talk about the invigorating and often times overwhelming parts of starting a business.References:The Carnivore Diet by Shawn Baker The Carnivore Code by Paul SaladinoMental Health and Metabolic DisordersLies about Saturated Fat and the Sugar Fad: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/records-found-in-dusty-basement-undermine-decades-of-dietary-advice/https://www.huffpost.com/entry/a-decade-of-diet-lies_b_59832e65e4b0396a95c87516Movenat (https://movenat.com)Tony Blauer (@tonyblauer) / Spear System (@spear.system)Religion and American Dietetics:https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/secret-ingredient-kelloggs-corn-flakes-seventh-day-adventism-180964247/Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Studies (https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/aces/index.html)The Social Dilemma: (https://www.thesocialdilemma.com)Contact Liam:Instagram: @instinctivemovementBook Liam on MeatRx.comSupport Our Sponsors:Heart & Soil Supplements: 10% off code: savagezen10TruBeef: $25 off your first order, 2 lbs of free beef per order if you subscribe (referral link)Submission Shark: 10% off code: savagezenNot Dead Yet Apparel: 10% off code: savagezenRedmond Real Salt / ReLyte: 15% off code: savagezenMusic: Inhale/Exhale by Tendinite

After looking at different "pre-workout" supplements, I found that most of them are a combination of B-vitamins, creatine, and amino acids -- all of which are found in red meat. A couple months ago there was also big stir in the carnivore community about honey and carbohydrates. With all this in mind I started 4 x 1 week experiments looking at my blood sugar and athletic performance.Part 1: Caffeine OnlyPart 2: Caffeine and HoneyPart 3: Honey and ElectrolytesPart 4: Electrolytes and Blood / Organ Supplement~As always, thanks to my rad sponsors:Heart and Soil Supplements (10% off code: savagezen)Redmond Real Salt and Electrolytes (15% off code: savagezen)Tru Beef ($25 off your first order)Submission Shark Apparel (10% off code: savagezen)Not Dead Yet Apparel (10% off code: savagezen)

Quan is an outstanding clinician and woman who I'm truly honored to have shared the consulting room with as a co-therapist and colleague. Throughout this episode we talk about growth and changes in our styles and "non-professional" personalities throughout our careers and start to touch on the current political climate and the effects of socio-economics and geography on mental health. There is a podcast called "therapists uncensored", but I doubt they get into the grit and grist of "the person of the therapist" as we do here and as I will with other clinicians on the show.~References:The Heart and Soul of the Therapist by Steve HowardTalk about it: changing masculinities and mental health in rural placesThe suicide gap: Why men are more likely to kill themselvesThe BIPOC ProjectNutrition and Psychiatry with Chris Palmer~Nutrition Coaching available at: http://thekombatkitchen.comInstagram: @savagezen~Support our Affiliates:Not Dead Yet Apparel -- Help Stop Human Trafficking -- (10% off code: savagezen)Heart & Soil Supplements (10% off code: savagezen10)Tru Beef $25 off your first orderSubmission Shark Apparel (10% off code: savagezen)Redmond Real Salt & Electrolytes (15% off code: savagezen)~Music: Inhale/Exhale by Tendinite

Tex and I have been friends for more than half our lives. He has worked and lived on a farm his entire life which brings a unique perspective when discussing animal ethics, potential limitations of regenerative agriculture, and hunting / conservation ethics. Tex's own health journey encompasses gaining and losing about 100 lbs over the last 10 - 15 years and we talk about performance versus sustainable physique. We also get metaphysical early on talking about virtue signaling and death anxiety.
