Filtered Deluxe Recordings is an independent record label created in 2016 by Stereo 77. Established in Orlando, Florida, but born from the Caribbean with the vision to release music with an underground and experimental foundation - heavily influenced by Afro-Caribbean rhythms, deep disco, funky beats & breaks, dub, and trip hop.
James Hayford's ‘Paper Cuts Mixtape’ is a chopped up, and fuzzed out, beats-meets-psych-dub journey, made up of eleven tracks as one twenty-five minute mix, tied together with interstitial noise and recurrent sampled themes. James has explored this type of extended mixed album for the Numero Group label with his acclaimed ‘Eccentric Breaks and Beats’ album, and his blended edit suite ‘Slow Soul Flow’.
The tracks featured in ‘Paper Cuts’ started back in 2007, while James was completing the classic releases ‘Resoled’ Volumes 1 & 2 (Plimsoll Records) under his Shoes alias. These compositions began as a series of rough chopped samples mixed with influences from the album ‘Donuts’ by J Dilla, and the dub explorations of Scientist. These musical sketches were made quickly, rough, and left with all clicks and messy swing of the moment.
Inspired to find more spontaneous influence through collaboration, he gave the songs to his long-time Shoes collaborator, Joe Andrew. Joe channeled his college influences of space and psych rock from bands like The Flaming Lips and Spiritualized. While sitting on the floor of his apartment with a guitar, microphone, effect pedals, and a four track tape recorder, Joe creates layers of hypnotic melodies and noisy harmony that perfectly go with this collection.
Over the course of the pandemic isolation, James revisited the ‘Paper Cuts’ compositions by remixing, rearranging, and fusing more samples and clamorous sonic themes that turned these ideas into a unique, trippy, and addictive mix.
The mixtape is complimented by the original photographic artwork of Caural, who said about the album - “I've listened to this thing like 6 times. I can not stop!”

Filtered Deluxe presents the Color of My Dreams EP from James Hayford - an electric and vibrant collection of Leftfield dance music dappled with shades of nostalgia, ablaze with vibrant percussion, and grounded in warm bass tones.
Produced throughout 2020, the EP represents a sound influenced by dreams where we can process the past and creatively reimagine the future.
We begin with ‘I Shall Proceed’ - saturated in melancholic vibes, a low slung Balearic groove, with chopped up soul snippets, and a female voice pleading; "it's my most favorite thing in the world … just to go outside and sit in the sun" - a feeling many of us can relate to in the winter season during a pandemic.
‘Uneven Steppes’ brings together off kilter broken beat and two-step grooves, with a prismatic blend of references towards the 90s bleep house styles of Lester Fitzpatrick or DBX, and the cluttered funk of the Talking Heads, backed by an uplifting pseudo-rave bass line, and congas.
The title track ‘Colour Of My Dreams’ conjures a vibrant and surrealistic soundscape that glistens with hazy vocal samples, a “shakes the rafters” wobbly bassline, and driven by chunky house (not house) beats.
‘Bring Your Shoes’ has the most direct reference to the 90s house bounce - while also including contrasting playful and darker contrasting elements like exuberant chattering on water percussion pushed against echoes of coughing children, with up-tempo and half-time 808 kicks.
The EP concludes with a meditative ambient piece entitled ‘Saturday 1128 Piano’ - capturing a suspended moment in time, and induced with fuzzy dissected piano, dusty distortion, and refracted glitches, that lead to the closing featuring a women’s voice extolling the virtues of someone who "knows the real me ..."

After more than a fifteen year hiatus, Burdy is back with his first release since collaborating with former Sofa Surfers member I-Wolf on ‘Meet The Babylonians’ (Klein Records 2004), which followed his début solo album ‘42’ (Sunshine Enterprises 2002). However, Burdy’s roots in electronic began earlier in life. Having been in bands as a guitarist and bass player in his youth, a burgeoning interest in hip hop and later house music led to Burdy starting out in the electronic music scene in Hull (UK) as a DJ in 1993. It was during these early days that Burdy met DJ and Producer Mark Blissenden aka Bliss - and the pair cofounded Baby Mammoth. Over a span of 7 years, Baby Mammoth produced seven studio albums (plus a compilation) on the influential UK label Pork Recordings - home of Fila Brazillia, Bullitnuts, & The Solid Doctor. The prolific body of work encompassed the label’s ethos for experimentation in electronica, downtempo, blunted techno, drum & bass and broken beats. During this period, Burdy & Bliss collaborated with a group of highly talented jazz musicians who influenced a number of tracks on their last three albums with Pork Recordings, to create a truly “live” version of the Baby Mammoth sound by removing all the sequenced electronics and re-arranging tracks to create drum forward, jazz expressions of their studio album work. Baby Mammoth’s eighth and final album ‘Octo Muck’, was released in 2003 on Viennese record label Ecco.Chamber. After a tongue-in-cheek challenge from a friend to “write a track by the end of January 2020”, Burdy found the impetus to resurrect a studio set-up and get back to work. ‘López Conexión’ continues down the 90s influenced vibe, in particular house infused balearic meets dubby downtempo and big beat. Built from three loops produced by a close friend and fellow Orlando DJ / Producer (asked to remain anonymous), with additional rave-like synths & basslines, dusty drums, psychedelic guitars, and plenty of dub influenced vocal hits & sounds.
‘Bonus Space’ closes the EP on a celestial and lighter vibe, heavily inspired by the major Brazilian influence that impacted the 90s and early 2000s nu-jazz, house, broken beat - and of course, the balearic sounds. Calming, ghost-like vocals float through out the upfront drums and percussion, while the bass and synth lines deliver the heat from underneath.
This EP is dedicated to the remarkable career and influence of José Padilla, and the impact and lessons his unparalleled Café Del Mar compilations provided. RIP

It seems strange to say that someone who has been making sample based music for nearly two decades is "just hitting his stride", but that's the feeling with this first in a series of three singles from James Hayford on Filtered Deluxe Recordings.
