Flying to an unfamiliar airport successfully is one of the most rewarding things about aviation. But it doesn’t come without its share of anxiety, including receiving and complying with a taxi clearance. For many pilots, there’s a level of nervousness when calling up ground control. Sometimes the jitters can escalate to freezing, and in worst cases, a runway/taxiway incursion or accident. On this episode we’ll share some tips how to prepare when going to an unfamiliar field and taxi like a professional.

Make the most of your flight lesson by asking questions. This is going to help you as a flight training learner to retain the material, and it’s going to make your instructor a better CFI. When you ask clarifying questions, it deepens your understanding and helps build that important foundation for your training. Asking questions will also help your CFI know how to provide a higher level of service and instruction. We’ll discuss the topic of asking questions and cover other situations when questioning is beneficial.

There’s something we all can agree on: flight training is expensive! On this episode we’ll share some tips how to save money before, during and after your flight training. We’ll look at decisions such as: Should I wait until I have the money saved, or pay as I go? What about accelerated training? How can flying more often save me money? We’ve witnessed learners (including ourselves) make wise decisions that saved money along the way, and also approaches that we wish we’d done differently. Mahalo for joining us!

The weather is perfect every day in paradise, right? You can find awesome weather almost daily somewhere around the island, but there are also some unique challenges to flying in tropical weather. Strong trade winds, wind shear, mountain wave turbulence, and quick-developing low visibility are some of the things you have to consider before departing on a flight. On this episode we’ll share about some of weather factors that need considered even in one of the most beautiful places to fly in the world.

Fly Maui flight instructors Cole Hambright and Preston Schoewe join us to talk about their journeys to becoming CFIs. They trained together in Arizona, finished their ratings at a popular Part 141 aviation school, then took a step of faith, packed up and moved to Maui with a couple of suitcases. We are happy to be back on the Fly Maui podcast after nearly a year break! One of the questions we get a lot is, “How long did it take you to fly your planes over to Maui?” Well, we aren’t great swimmers and we’re scared of sharks, so flying a Cessna 172 from California to Maui isn’t an option. The Fly Maui flight school recently purchased a Cessna 172 for the flight line, and on this episode we’ll cover the ins-and-outs of shipping an aircraft across the Pacific Ocean.

We’ve had an interesting month with the arrival of the newly overhauled engine for one of our flight school airplanes. After the install process it was time to begin the break in. Aloha! Since we fly two Cessna 172s here in Maui and manage the flights and maintenance work on both aircraft, we constantly have questions how to best maintain our aircraft. A few weeks ago, our friend, AP/IA/CFI and Airplane Owner Maintenance Podcast host Dean Showalter invited us on his podcast to ask him all the questions we had about the Cessna 172. Dean had some great answers and shared some valuable wisdom from his years of experience. We had to share it with our listeners as well!

Listen to Dean’s podcast on your preferred podcast app and check out his website for more links and photos of his work and interesting maintenance cases.

On this page you’ll also find Dean’s new FREE resource for owners and operators of Cessna 172s. It’s a list of commonly needed parts and their part numbers.

From the first week of training, student pilots are thrown into a crazy new world of pilot speak. Aside from radio communication itself, there’s a big world of aviation acronyms and mnemonics to learn. It can be daunting at first, but the pilot soon learns that these become helpful flows in flight and memory aids when studying for the next checkride or flight review. On this episode, we’re walking through a big list of common aviation acronyms… welcome to our study session!

Can we all agree on one thing? All of us want to save money in flight training. Getting the job done, and making it easier on yourself in the process will save you time and money in the long run. This isn’t an episode about saving money for training. We’re going to talk about a few common things that both students and instructors expect of each other. Agreeing on these 4 things will help you both set realistic expectations for your training, and will likely even put you on a faster track to success.

The last few months we’ve all been navigating uncharted waters during the pandemic shutdown. A few pilots and instructors have continued to fly with precautions, but the vast majority have grounded themselves and their flight schools since mid-March. Now that risk-avoidance is going into a risk-management phase as we’re getting back into the cockpit. On this episode we’ll share some of the things we’ve done, and best practices for getting back into flying whether you’ve been shutdown for a few months or a rusty pilot who hasn’t flown in a few years.

John Alpine and his family were spending their usual winter break on Maui when the Covid-19 shutdown went into effect. John decided it would be a good time to renovate and deep clean his condo that’s typically rented out to excited visitors. We asked John to share his thoughts about Maui slowly transitioning into opening back up to visitors. John also shares some of the things he’s learned through the shutdown, including soloing an airplane for the first time!

On April 29 the FAA issued a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) that provides relief to pilots who will want to get back into flying after the coronavirus shutdown. Many flight schools across the country remain closed or operating with limited training, and checkrides have nearly come to a standstill. This SFAR allows some extensions to help support general aviation pilots and instructors who could potentially be economically impacted by a shutdown that was beyond their control.
We’ll walk through some of these new rules on this episode. We’re also going to end on a positive, optimistic note looking to the future when our state opens back up to travelers & some of the cool things you can do in the air if you’re a pilot visiting Maui.

Retired Alaska Airlines Capt. Kerri Ballard joins us to continue our discussion on preventing bad habits while flying. Kerri offers examples and real-life stories from her years of flight instruction and flying for the airlines. What are some of Kerri’s encounters with wake turbulence? What did she consistently see as bad habits in the flight deck? What did she learn from the airlines that she wishes she had known as a flight instructor? We hope the stories and discussion offers inspiration to become a safer pilot.

A few months ago on Episode 60 we talked about the PAVE checklist and setting your personal minimums. This is a topic that we have continued to discuss in relation to decision making before and during flights. On today’s episode, we’re going to dive deeper into how we are trying to challenge ourselves to become safer pilots through decision making and risk management. We’re also taking an honest look at some of our bad habits that we tend to explain away until they become normal operations. Not a good thing!

A lot has happened in the world – it almost seems overnight how drastically our lives have changed, including for many of us as pilots.
A large percentage of Americans are now under shelter at home/work at home mandates. Over the last month it’s brought discussion and confusion over what is legal for us as pilots in regards to dual instruction, solo flights, or making the decision to not fly altogether. It’s a hard time for many of us, but we can use this as an opportunity to evaluate and pivot your mindset. Instead of gaining the Covid-15 from eating all your snacks and binging on Netflix, make the most of this forced time at home to make yourself a better, smarter and safer pilot.
On this episode we’ll share some of the ways you can expand your knowledge, study and connect in ways that during a “normal” work week you didn’t have the time for.

The final stages of preparing for a checkride usually involves three parts: studying for the oral exam, practicing for the flight portion, and organizing everything you need to have with you for the big day. Instructors are a necessity when prepping you for the oral exam and flight, but many fall short in adequately coaching us through the organization piece. Luckily for us and our recent commercial checkrides, we utilized a fresh-to-the-industry product that took the stress off of the organization. We’ll share about how Checkride Ace was an integral part of our preparation, and other ways we got ready for the big day.

Flying at night can be beautiful, thrilling and challenging at the same time. Flying fundamentals at night are the same, but there’s an added layer of vigilance and focus that must be maintained to fly safely at night. Here in Hawaii, flying at night might as well be flying in instrument conditions. With no sense of the horizon flying over the black open water, a good instrument scan is essential. On Episode 61 we’re flying at night for the first time in four years, and doing it in Hawaii!

Personal minimums are clearly defined, written down, and regularly updated tolerances you give yourself when making a go or no-go decision. Some people just think wind and visibility, but your minimums should extend even to proficiency, fuel, and maintenance issues. Your personal minimums are just that: personal. They’re tailored by you, and possibly with the help of your CFI, to your level of knowledge, skill and ability. The purpose of this exercise and sticking to them is to help you identify risks and possible stresses that could keep you from having a safe flight.

You have a dream to learn how to fly… but for whatever reason, maybe right now is not the right time to jump in the plane and begin lessons. It could be that you’re too young or don’t have the money or time set aside yet for full time training. It could be that you live in an area with terrible winter weather, so you’re just counting the days until summer to start. Having to wait can be terribly frustrating. In fact, a lot of potential students walk away from the dream in the process of waiting.
On today’s episode we’re going to throw out some ideas how to make aviation a part of your life and prepare for flight training. Even if you’re playing the waiting game, you can get one step ahead in your planning and training, so when the time comes, you’ll be ahead of the curve.

One of the questions we were asked recently on our instrument check rides was, “How do you get your weather?” This is a question that examiners ask on nearly every check ride. It’s something that you as a pilot, or even student pilot, should be able to answer without blinking an eye. A safe pilot will not only gather, but also try to understand the weather along the route of intended flight. On today’s episode we’re going to share what weather resources we use here in Hawaii as well as other options as you develop your own system for this crucial preflight action.

Distractions in flight can be a life-threatening issue. It’s not just the rise in use of cell phones, iPads and GoPros in flight. There are other ways that distractions can creep in and eventually affect the safety of your flight. On Episode 52 we’re going to touch on some of these pilot distractions as a reminder to us all, and also talk about distractions we face overall in flight training.

It’s no secret that flight training is very expensive. Some people are under the impression that if you’re a pilot, then you must be rich! We know that the majority of you, like us, work hard to pay for your training. You may actually work multiple jobs, use your savings, or obtain a loan to finance your training. There is another option that could supplement your flight training costs, and that is an aviation scholarship. On today’s episode we’ll lay out some facts about scholarships, where to find them, and tips on preparing a scholarship application.

Kerri Ballard is a pilot who’s worn many hats in her career: flight instructor, fire bomber, world champion skier, and captain for Alaska Airlines. Like many pilots who’ve gone before us, and even some we’re lucky enough to call mentors and inspirations, the more we get to know Kerri, the more “cool factor” she has. Kerri’s humble heart and expertise is a draw for any young pilot who's lucky enough to meet her. We’re thrilled for her to share part of her story on this week’s episode.

Fueling your own aircraft is actually a simple process that many student pilots learn early in their training. But if you’re like us and trained at a field where others handled fueling for you, it can be a little intimidating the first time you taxi up to a fuel pump and do it yourself. On today’s episode we’re going to walk through the steps of fueling properly and safely.

We’ve been absent from the podcast this month, and with good reason. Our focus had to turn to studying and flying getting ready for our instrument check rides, which were yesterday. On today’s episode we’ll give a brief overview of how we approached our instrument training from ground school to check ride prep. We’ll break it down into more detail in future episodes, but as for now, we just wanted to share the good news and initial thoughts. Fly with aloha!

Whatever you want to call them… confessions, regrets or lessons learned. These are six of the regrets we’ve seen in ourselves as student pilots and with others in flight training over the last few years. Episode 45 shares personal stories from past and current flight training and some of the things we wish we could do over, or do better.

Last week on Episode 40 we talked about some of the reasons that student pilots drop out in such high numbers. Some of those reasons included money, the hard work of flight training, and a lack of structure, just to name a few. On this week’s episode we’re keeping a similar theme, but we’re going to approach it from the CFI’s point of view. Here to help us today, is our own instructor, Ovick Kar.

The student pilot dropout rate is probably the highest of any discipline. Some numbers suggest the rate is as high as 70%. While it’s easy to say finances is the biggest reason, it seems that highly motivated students will find a way to come up with the cash to complete their training. So why are student pilots dropping out in such high numbers? On today’s episode we’ll look at some of the reasons and tips to keep pushing through training when you’re ready to throw in the towel.

We had some really good feedback about last week’s episode on Class C Airspace for Beginners by several listeners, and one request to cover the other kinds of airspaces. We’re not planning to have a month-long series about airspace, but we thought we’d go ahead and talk through Class D airspace since it’s more common for general aviation pilots, including us here in Hawaii.

For some pilots, the thought of flying into a Class C airport can be intimidating. The environment is busier and the communication with air traffic control can be daunting. It’s a transition that we’ve made this past year as our home airport went from a small, non-towered airport to a very busy Class C airport. On Episode 37, we’ll share some of the characteristics of Class C airspace and the requirements of flying into it. Additionally, we’ll cover how with a little planning, preparation and communication skills, you can make flying in a busier environment enjoyable.

The Air Race Classic, an all-women air race, is taking place this week. It began in Jackson, TN and will finish in Welland, Ontario. The ARC began in 1929 and was commonly known as the Powderpuff Derby. Women of all ages, from all walks of life, and with different aviation experiences compete in teams of 2 and 3. It’s a great week of promoting general aviation and women’s continued role in aviation.

Part of the reason we started the Fly Maui and The Aloha 360 podcasts was to leave behind a digital recording of our stories and experiences for our family. We wanted to take some time to sit down with Leslie’s dad, Rick Proctor, and hear some of his flying stories. Today we’re going to hear from him and some of the pilot heritage in Leslie’s family.

The Hana Airport in remote East Maui has become one of our favorite airports to fly into. Although it’s just a 15 minute flight from Kahului, it’s one of the most scenic flights in all of Hawaii. On this episode, we’re recording from the Hana Airport while we’re celebrating an anniversary “staycation” in Hana. Hana has an interesting history, and it’s one of most popular places for visitors to explore while on Maui.

There are many preflight actions that a pilot needs to take before climbing into the aircraft for a flight. On Episode 29 we discussed some of the “why’s” behind the preflight inspection with A&P/IA Dean Showalter. Today, we have Chris Palmer back with us to talk about some of the required preflight action you should be taking as a pilot, before the walkaround even begins. There are 2 acronyms that can help you remember what preflight actions need to be taken to assess yourself and your flight.

Every good pilot has one important tool that’s needed before evening starting the engine – the preflight checklist. From day one of flight training, you’re taught the importance of not only performing, but understanding your preflight inspection. But are there some specific things to look for that aren’t clearly spelled out in your checklist? Today we welcome Dean Showalter to the podcast to walk us through some ideas.
Dean is an A&P/IA and pilot himself based at Classic Aviation at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport in Virginia. Dean also produces the Airplane Owner Maintenance Podcast, a show that’s informative and valuable for mechanics, airplane owners and even student pilots.

There are many things you can do to make first time flyers more at ease, beyond the required safety briefing. As they get comfortable with the flight, you have a unique opportunity & responsibility to educate and inspire them. On this episode, we share some of our favorite tips when flying with first-timers & we hear from some of our passengers, Shane & Jessie Perry.

Small business startups are not for the faint of heart. There are issues of time and financial sacrifices to consider. In the middle of full time church ministry and running a local construction business, we found ourselves walking down the road of starting up a flight school and aviation maintenance business. Many people asked how we got into this seemingly random industry, and today we’re going to tell our aviation business story and the rewards and challenges that we’ve experienced along the way.

Staying current and staying proficient… It can be a little confusing, especially to students and new pilots. Currency and proficiency are different, but at the same time they have similarities and complement each other. On today’s episode we’ll outline what the FAA requires to be a legal, current pilot in command. Then we’ll talk about what it means to us to not only be a legal pilot, but to be a proficient pilot. Getting current and becoming proficient are two things we’ve experienced in the last several months here in Hawaii.

Some pilots would venture to say that the FAA knowledge test for the instrument rating is the most difficult of all pilot exams. We don’t know if that’s true, but preparing and taking the instrument written test was definitely “next level” compared to the private pilot test. On today’s episode we’re going to share what motivated us to pull up the boot straps, get focused, study, and knock out the exam this past month. We realize each person’s study methods and learning process is different. But we hope sharing our journey will give you some helpful ideas, or at least encourage you to set some goals if you’re in the same phase of training that we are.

FAA Knowledge Tests, or commonly known as “written tests,” are a way of life for pilots with each certificate sought. Preparing for the knowledge test was a huge part of our training as private pilots. In reality, ground school and studying for the knowledge test and the oral portion of the practical test comprises more than half of your flight training as a private pilot.
With the new Airman Certification Standards, the days of passing the test based on rote memorization are over. New, scenario-based questions are being added to the database of test questions in attempt to draw from the student pilot’s knowledge and implementation of that knowledge in real-life scenarios. And believe us, you’ll be glad you didn’t rely on memorization when it comes time for the oral exam at your check ride.

Part of the reason we started the Fly Maui podcast was to begin building an audio scrapbook in a digital format of our adventures and experiences for our family. One thing I wish I had was a recording of my pilot grandmother telling about her flight training, air races and involvement with the 99s. The only thing we have are scrapbooks that she made, which we found after she passed away. One thing I found last year in one of these scrapbooks are 2 speeches she gave about her flying. I read these on a recording this past summer, and wanted to share these with our listeners.
I don’t cry very often, but by the time I read through them, I was bawling like a baby. Apparently one of the speeches was delivered to mostly non-pilots in attempt to explain the basic principles of flight and encourage others to take a step of faith and take flying lessons. In it she said, “When I tell you a little child can do it, I know what I’m talking about. Our three year old granddaughter (ME!) used to love to fly our Cessna 172 and would gleefully make it go up and down and turn.”
This part really got to me. Because that was me, and little did she know that someday decades later after she was gone, that this same little girl would become a pilot herself and still gleefully like to make her airplane go up and down and turn. Besides being with John and the boys, there’s not much more in the world that brings me such joy as being able to fly.
Let’s see what my grandmother, Virginia Proctor, had to say about flying several decades ago.

In early August, Hurricane Hector became a major, Category 4 hurricane in the Pacific Ocean. At its closest, Hector came within 200 miles south of Hawaii Island. NOAA dispatched an aircraft, a Gulfstream 4, from its hurricane hunting fleet to Hawaii to collect data for better forecasting the track of Hector. It’s during that mission that the world was quickly made aware of its historical significance because it was the first NOAA hurricane hunting mission piloted by an all-female crew. We’re stoked to have one of these ladies, Lt. Commander Rebecca Waddington, on the podcast today to share her amazing story.
Rebecca returned to Hawaii two more times during the 2018 Pacific hurricane season. One of those missions was to gather data to help forecast the track of Hurricane Lane, a major Category 5 hurricane that made national news as it got dangerously close to Hawaii. Luckily for Hawaii residents and visitors, Lane quickly lost strength as it moved into Hawaiian waters.

There is typically a rollercoaster of emotions that a student pilot feels in the hours of training leading to the first solo. Like our son, Jonathan, you may have be fearful of being in a small aircraft. As you work through those fears, then it’s the exciting first hours when the aviation “bug bites.” You feel accomplished and elated when you land the plane unassisted for the first time. Student pilots may also feel discouraged if there are lengthy weather or maintenance delays. Some students feel like they are ready for their first solo, but the instructor is hesitant. It’s also about this time that you begin to realize everything you have yet to learn, you’re facing the big written test, or possibly running out of finances for training. On this episode, John chats with our son, Jonathan, who is about 15 hours into his private pilot training. Hear some of the challenges and rewards he’s encountered so far as a student pilot.

Mele Kalikimaka and Merry Christmas from Maui! On this special episode, our sons Jonathan and Jared Caubble, and Jonathan’s new fiancé, Caitlyn, join us to talk story about a special day. On December 20, Jonathan proposed to Caitlyn after five and a half years of dating. The proposal took place on the summit of Haleakala volcano, with a beautiful, clear view of the crater as the backdrop. The day started renting a Cessna 172 and flying around Maui County, including landing at Kalaupapa, once a colony for patients of leprosy. Hear all the details about that flight and the proposal!

Experienced pilots will tell you it’s not a matter of if, but when, that you eventually experience an engine failure in flight. Whether it’s caused by fuel starvation or a fluke mechanical failure, it’s an experience that’s surely to get the blood and adrenaline pumping. Today we have a special interview with the survivor of an engine failure that resulted in a crash. His story really impacts us in a deep way, because it’s John’s brother, Buddy Caubble, and our nephew, Harrison, who were in the plane that day.

The flight review is a requirement for any pilot who intends to act as pilot in command of an aircraft. The flight review is referred to by many as the biannual flight review, or BFR for short, but this is a term the FAA is encouraging pilots not to use. A flight review must be conducted every 24 calendar months. But did you know there are certain exemptions? Today we’ll break down the requirements for the flight review and share a little about our recent experience here on Maui.

The private pilot check ride is the pinnacle moment for a student pilot. After so much of your time (months for many, and years for some) has been devoted to ground study and training, the time has finally come to demonstrate your new skills. Even though your mind tells you, “My CFI wouldn’t have signed me off for my check ride if I wasn’t ready,” still every check ride brings anxiety for even the most skilled and knowledgeable pilots. Today on Episode 8, we’re going to share about our experiences with the private pilot practical test.
On the other side of your successful check ride, a new freedom awaits. For many, it’s the green light to take your family and friends for a ride and to show what you’ve been learning this whole time. It’s a ticket not only for new adventures, but a ticket to continue learning.

Aviation podcasts have been on the scene for a while. That’s probably surprising if you’re just getting into downloading and listening to podcasts. There are some great aviation related shows that highlight aviation news, pilot stories and even flight training. Some of these podcasts have been an inspiration to us in developing The Aloha 360 podcast, and now recently, the Fly Maui podcast.

Pilot fears can be very real. Those fears, along with other factors, can be a hindrance to finishing out a private pilot certificate. Some of those hindrances still play a role long after you become a pilot. We all know time and money (or the lack thereof) are major causes of someone becoming a rusty pilot, or never attempting flight training at all. What are some of the other considerations? What do these look like for us as we get back into the air in Hawaii?

Only 0.2% of the U.S. population are certificated pilots… and out of those pilots, only about 6% are female. Since the days of Amelia Earhart, this select group of women pilots have joined together for networking, encouragement, training, and busting through any stereotypes in this male-dominated industry of aviation. Today on the podcast we have the honor of introducing you to three women who live on Maui and are members of The Ninety-Nines, Inc., Int’l Organization of Women Pilots. We’ve asked them to share a little about their flying experiences, what being a part of the 99s means to them, and of course, their favorite things to do on Maui.

Tim Perry’s fascination with flying helicopters began in his childhood while his father was in the military. Out on his own in his teens, Tim began his fixed wing then rotorcraft training, which led him to some interesting jobs in exotic locations, from Puerto Rico, to Alaska, then eventually flying missions for Search & Rescue and the National Park Service in Hawaii. Now, as a pilot for Blue Hawaiian Helicopters on Maui, Tim joins us today to share his stories and passion for aviation.

First solo flight as a pilot. It’s a day that each pilot remembers for the rest of their lives and an event that deserves special attention. It’s the combination of the highest level of anxiety, thrill and accomplishment that really few people get to experience in their lifetimes.
Today on Episode 3 we’re going to tell our first solo stories as student pilots and relive some of the memories of that exciting day. We hope this brings a little nostalgia to you seasoned pilots or anticipation for those of you who haven’t soloed yet, or thinking about flight training.

Did you know? Less than 0.2% of the U.S. population are pilots. And out of that pilot population, only about 6% are female. A pretty small niche in our society. With new regulations after 9/11 the days of hanging around small local airports, kicking the tires, and talking to pilots are diminishing. The rate of newly certificated pilots is not growing in proportion to population growth & demand. So how did not just one of us, but both of us become private pilots?
In Episode 2 we share some of our aviation journey and hope to encourage many of you to learn to fly. If you are already a pilot, we challenge you to join us in doing what you can to promote general aviation & help bridge the gap between airports, FBOs and your community.

We are John & Leslie Caubble, and we’re stoked that you joined us for this 1st episode of the Fly Maui podcast. We’ll be honest, Hawaii is not the most affordable place to do flight training. Finding ways to keep your head in the aviation game can be challenging, whether you’re on the ground due to finances, time or family life. This podcast is one of the ways we are attempting to learn and stay motivated while we inch our way toward the goal of earning additional ratings.
