While disagreement is unavoidable, division is a choice. The most important thing to Jesus is his followers’ unity, and in the midst of disagreement, we can create a community where everyone is welcome, and we can all work together for the good of all people. When someone does something wrong, we want them to get what they deserve. But when we’re the ones who do wrong, we want mercy! Thankfully, Jesus shows us a God who does not give us what we deserve but offers us grace, no matter how little we seem to deserve it. When you’re going through a difficult time, someone might try to reassure you by saying, “God won’t give you more than you can handle.” But if we’re honest, we all have things we can’t handle alone. The good news is that God never expected us to handle everything on our own, and God helps us when we have more than we can handle. Everyone wants to be happy, but our attempts to chase happiness often have the opposite effect—they make us miserable. While God delights in our happiness, God also has higher callings for us that are better and more life-giving than happiness alone. We like to think that the things we pursue are freely chosen, but we rarely realize how much our desires are shaped by the people and media we pay attention to. The Christian life isn't something we do in private—it's a public act of living as a citizen of heaven, and it has serious social and community consequences. Being good citizens of the gospel kingdom of Christ demands higher standards for our behavior, and when we live this way, we can enjoy a common life of joy and humility. We all need a supportive community around us, but a healthy, strong community can be hard to find. The early church in Philippi demonstrates what it looks like when we come together as people partnering together who are generous, content, and loving. By following their example, we can create that same kind of community today. When we face challenges in the world, what we want is a pain-free solution, ease of life, certainty, and security. What we need, though, is meaningful work, community, and faith that God will take care of us in the ambiguity. When we trust God, love our enemies, and set aside selfish desires, we can be part of the world-changing work that Jesus is dong in the world. We like to hope that in the crucial moments of our lives, we'll rise to the occasion. Unfortunately, what actually happens is that we fall to the level of our training and preparation. If we want to become more resilient, we have to train. An ancient Christian practice helps us as we train to become more resilient and more like Jesus. The early church was compelling not because of what they believed, but how they behaved. In a chaotic culture of division, the first Christians were a peaceful presence who welcomed all, loved authentically, and let their light shine. Let’s do that again. We all grow up with assumptions about which people are "our people," but God moves us beyond those assumptions. In Acts 10, Peter finds himself in the 'wrong' neighborhood with the 'wrong' people, and the Holy Spirit comes to a Roman centurion and his family. When we go through events like a global pandemic, we desperately want things to be different than they are. Yet if we don’t learn to take life as it comes, we will always be waiting for our real lives to begin, and God’s desires for the world through us will go unrealized. In the midst of a global pandemic, problems abound, and we often want out of those problems as quickly as possible. But God is not as concerned about getting us out of problems as in getting us through them. Problems bring us to the end of ourselves, and they teach us to rely on God, who uses those problems to help us grow. While it's uncomfortable, when life is disrupted, we can learn to embrace problems as gifts. We need someone greater than ourselves to tell us what to do when we don’t know what to do. God made us, so God knows what we need. When we ask God for help, everything changes. Most of the time, God helps us through other people. God can be trusted to take care of us. God’s power and resources are not just for special people; they are for all people like you and me. The first step in God making a way for you is for you to say yes to God. God promises when you say yes to God first, everything else you need will be provided for you. When we say yes to God, a whole new world can open up. Lewis wrote, “There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’ All that are in Hell, choose it.” In this message, Dr. Mark Foster looks at God’s will versus Jonah’s will when it comes to the people and animals of Nineveh. Discernment performed alone can become delusion. How can you tell if the voice in your head is from God or from a dark place? In “Rock Bottom,” Dr. Mark Foster takes a look at the life of Jonah as an example of what God does, how God does it, and how to know if it is truly God or not. The good news is we have a God of second chances and we have thousands of years of brothers and sisters in the faith leading us to the way that leads to life. Download the sermon notes. Direction without confirmation is delusion. How do we know what God wants us to do? How can we confirm what God is showing us individually and for our common mission? In “Seeing 2020” Dr. Mark Foster draws from the teaching and practice of the early church in helping us see how to discern what God is showing us. God is always speaking. The season of Christmas lays bare the deepest longings of our heart, and in a world of violence, division, and suffering, we’re desperate for hope. Though we're familiar with the word, we don't think much about what it means to say "amen" at the end of a prayer. In a world of “soundbites,” “headlines,” and “memes,” it can be difficult to get to the truth of what someone is saying. In this sermon, Dr. Mark summarizes the Sermon on the Mount covering the highlights of Matthew chapters five, six, and seven to allow us to hear the sermon as a whole. Jesus is not giving us advice or another set of restrictive rules. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is teaching us that it is possible to become like Him in this life and live with him forever in the next! Download the sermon notes. In a world filled with condemnation, the church can be a "community of prayerful love." Through offering compassion (and not condemnation!) and through prayer, we can look more and more like the community Jesus described in Matthew 7. Download the sermon notes. We all experience worry—sometimes to the point that we can't think of anything else. But our worries can tell us what we truly treasure. Jesus teaches that when we learn to treasure what God treasures, we can let go of worry and find freedom. Download the sermon notes. One of the primary hinderances to our ability to connect with God is the desire for the approval of others. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shares how to overcome this challenge and teaches us to live beyond the opinion of others. Download the sermon notes. We can go out in Jesus' protection and power because all authority on heaven and earth are his. He is Christ Pantocrator, Ruler of All. Be not afraid. We're often tempted to take the easy way out, but when we do so, we're like workers who build on a foundation of sand. Jesus shows us a better way, and when we build on the foundation of his teaching, we build a life that can endure. Download the sermon notes. When building something, we start with the instructions, but instructions can't tell us how to deal with every situation. By exploring one of the most well-known sets of instructions—the Ten Commandments—we discover a pattern that shows us a way of life that's based in love. Download the sermon notes. In the book of Acts, the Antioch Church was a church that dug deep and reached out. Like them, we too can dig deep with devotion, encouragement, and discipleship, as well as reach out through the Holy Spirit, to diverse groups, in love. Teacher: Rev. When we face transitions in life, we often must leave our comfort zones to reach the destination God desires for us. Rev. Andy and Melissa Nelms share about the apostles' adaptation to new circumstances in Acts 10 and how we can adapt when God calls us off the beaten path. Download the sermon notes. When we head into uncharted territory, we need a community around us if we are to reach our goal. When the church was born, the disciples had to learn a new way of living together, and God used their new community to transform the world. Download the sermon notes. After he ascended into heaven, Jesus gave the disciples a task that was beyond their ability. But at Pentecost, the Holy Spirit filled them and gave them power to do things they previously could only have dreamt of. And the same Holy Spirit promises to fill, empower, and guide us today. At some point, we all realize that what got us here will not get us where we need to go. Jesus' disciples faced that situation when he ascended into heaven, and he gave them a mission that was beyond anything they had ever done before. Their response teaches us how we can respond when we enter uncharted territory. Download the sermon notes. (https://acts2umc.org/wp-content/uploads/sermons/2019/06/2019-June-2-Sermon-Notes.pdf)
Jesus said "Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks." Our words and actions flow from what we treasure in our hearts. What do you do when you pour out your heart to God in prayer, but you hear nothing in response? God is more ready to talk to you than you are ready to listen. You can learn to hear the direct, loving, weighty voice of God through scripture. Over thousands of years, God’s voice is consistent. Every day, we are bombarded by voices that compete for our time, attention, and our hearts. In a sea of competing voices, how do we discern the one voice that leads to abundant life? Download the sermon notes. (https://acts2umc.org/wp-content/uploads/sermons/2019/05/May-5-2019.pdf)
God's voice can be difficult to hear, as the boy Samuel found out. However, Samuel was able to discern God's voice through the help of his mentor Eli and through praying this prayer: "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." Often, the first step needed to hear God's voice is simply to listen. Download the sermon notes. (https://acts2umc.org/wp-content/uploads/sermons/2019/04/2019-April-26-28-with-blanks.pdf)
On Friday, Jesus was crucified, and his followers were overcome with pain. On Saturday, they waited, and nothing made sense. But on Sunday, Jesus rose from the dead, and they experienced deliverance. Whether you find yourself in a time of waiting or pain, Easter means that Jesus still delivers us from death to life, hope, and love. Sloth is painful to watch, but easy to fall into. When we give in to sloth, we become indifferent to those around us. But throughout his life, Jesus models a better way—the way of diligence. While it's easy to see greed as a temptation only for the very rich, the desire for more affects all of us. Instead of accumulating as much as possible and holding on for dear life, though, Jesus teaches that generosity sets us free from greed and lets us live lives of blessing for others.

Whether it's food, shopping, or scrolling on our phones, we all struggle with wanting more than is good for us, and the excess leads to ruin. But God desires our freedom, and through the virtue of temperance, helps us trust that Jesus is enough.

We all have difficult people in our lives, and we struggle to know how to be in relationship with them. The Bible gives us guidance for how to relate to wise, foolish, and evil people. Relationships are the greatest source of both joy and pain in our lives. But before we can begin to improve our relationships, we have to start in the right place—the love of God that makes possible our love for others. Our ability to love begins with the recognition that God first loved us.

What is perhaps most unexpected in the Gospel of Mark is the ending. In the oldest manuscripts, the Gospel ends with three women finding Jesus’ tomb empty, encountering an angel, and fleeing; “and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.” Their encounter shows us the consequences of fear in our own lives. Learn what Jesus teaches about fear so that we can live unafraid.

We don't always get what we ask for, and it can be painful when we receive an answer we didn't expect. Sometimes, Jesus says no when we expect him to say yes. But his "Yes" and his "No" are always for our good.
