Recorded in September 2023, Lucy and David were incredibly fortunate to spend some time over tea and cake with Jill and Brenda from Lancashire.
Brenda spent many happy holidays at The Oval in Dunster before Lucy's ownership, when it was used as B&B accommodation..
Brenda's memories date back to the 1950's and 1960's when a friends or family holiday meant a long journey on a coach from Greater Manchester during works holidays.
Imagine the feeling of leaving the coach in Taunton, catching a steam train to Dunster station and walking up the hill into Dunster - to discover the medieval splendour of the village, overlooked by the magnificent castle and breathing the fresh air blown by warm south westerly breezes.
Dunster was just one part of Brenda's holidays. She enjoyed happy times with her closest friend (Sheila, 1954) in Minehead and loved the happy-go-lucky atmosphere in the town, which hasn't really changed...

Ian talks candidly to Lucy about his background, the highs and lows of playing darts professionally and his real passion for the sport.

White is the winner of 13 PDC ranking events, and has reached many quarter-finals in majors. In 2019, he reached his first major semi final.

It was a pleasure to meet and chat to Freddie Huxtable, Ian Coleby and Amyas Crump as they shared their contagious enthusiasm for steam railways. These three authors have each painstakingly researched books on the history and impact of the railways Exmoor and surrounding areas. In this 30-minute chat, the trio cover a lot of ‘track’, from the transformative effect of freight on our everyday lives to the creation of the British package holiday, a blueprint for the NHS and even for insurance!

Today we're celebrating the Bampton Charter Fair. Recorded back in October 2022 and lovingly preserved until this time, here's our attempt to understand the local spectacle that really should be in your Autumn diary of events.
In this episode, Lucy finds something to tickle her tastebuds, David becomes overwhelmed with the selection of stalls and there's gin.. Lots of gin.
Make a date in your diary for the 2023 Charter Fair on Thursday 26th October. Come visit the Bampton Heritage and Visitor Centre and enjoy the atmosphere at this historic event. We understand Titan the robot will be visiting this year too!
Unfortunately, due to his Wedding, David (and Lucy) won't be able to make it this year, but we'll be visiting lovely Bampton over the winter to sample some of their local hospitality!

Bampton Fair existed even before King Henry III granted it a Royal Charter in 1258 and it is always held on the last Thursday of October. It is one of the oldest surviving Charter Fairs in the country.
For centuries, the fair mainly sold sheep and cattle and was the largest sheep fair in the South West of England. During the 1880's to the 1980's it evolved to become the famous Bampton Pony Fair trading in Exmoor ponies.
Today this traditional Devon fair continues to attract local producers of foods and livestock, crafts and traditional skills from Exmoor and its surrounding villages. The streets, church, pubs and venues of Bampton are filled to overflowing with market stalls, street entertainments and live music including craft workshops, demonstrations, and a funfair.

Back in July, the fabulous Sam joined us for a work experience project from West Somerset Cottage.
Sam worked alongside Lucy and David to learn everything about the business, condensed into one short week!
Sam's challenge was to investigate things to do for teenagers (and 17 year-olds!) when staying at one of our cottages here in Minehead and Exmoor and bringing them to life in a blog, social media post and on this podcast.

It’s either too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry. At the time of recording, Minehead feels more like Manila, with high humidity and frequent heavy rain interspersed with beaming sunshine.

Our reduced occupancy rates allow you to save up to 20% on your stay, depending on how many rooms you need. These are our best rates of the year so they can’t be combined with other special offers, promotions or discounts codes – even if you are a VIP guest.
You will of course still be able to access all the other common spaces – the kitchen, utility rooms, sitting and dining rooms as normal. Logs will be provided for the wood burner and in our Minehead cottages, the hot tubs will be running. Your welcome goodies will be the same and the cottage will be cleaned to our exacting standards. The only difference is you don’t pay for bedrooms you won’t be using. These will be locked and inaccessible for the duration of your stay.
What dates are reduced occupancy rates available?Reduced occupancy rates are available all year with the exception of the following:

In 2019, Peter Hoyland (Community Lead for Plastic Free Exmoor) and a core team of local influencers got hold of a copy of the Plastic Free Communities toolkit and set up a community led steering group. Together they set to work on the Surfers Against Sewage five-step framework to take their plastic free message to as many organisations, businesses and Exmoor visitors as they could.
The toolkit shows a community how they can work with local governance to bring about policy and system change, businesses to reduce the availability of throw away plastic and community groups and organsations to spread the word.
Fast forward to 2023 – through a pandemic – and there are now a growing number of businesses across Exmoor National Park who’ve been awarded a Plastic Free Business Champion Award, including Exmoor Character Cottages!

In this special podcast recorded back in September, we welcome Pete Mountstephen, our neighbour on West Street in Dunster.
Pete is a fascinating character. An education professional, author, musician and general all 'round creative.
Possibly best known locally for his lead role in 'Minnie Hates the Hoover', Dunster's very own duo / trio band playing 60's and 70's music in local venues throughout the year, Pete's appetite for life and learning is infectious!

It was the day of the show. The show.
Jackie stepped outside the back door of her cottage and breathed in the early August morning on this prince among days.
It had been wet overnight and the beads of rain sat like quicksilver; crazy diamonds running over the dragon frilled leaves of the “Milly Molly Mandy”. It had always been one of Jackie’s dearest sights and never failed to remind her how lucky she was to live here, surrounded by simple, but unbelievably complex beauty and drenched in the sacred wonder of countryside. This was her religion. This gave her the spiritual fix that others sought in scripture, mosque and temple. She felt tiny- small and yet massive at one and the same time and the hills, the fields, the shoreline and the sky seemed to shrink, until they almost became a hedgerow that she lived under and scuttled along, about her bucolic business every day. Then it all exploded to cram the whole cosmos with its green and pleasant, aching perfection.

She didn’t think any of this of course; she was getting her entries ready for the show.
Some of her craft entries (embroidery, anything crochet with a practical application) had gone to the Tithe Barn the previous evening, but the real stars (group of tomatoes, vegetable chutney, pickled eggs, three runner beans, a basket of five herbs, small flower arrangement, dahlias and so on and so on) all of these were last minute arrangments that relied pivotally on freshness and that bloom of fecund promise that begins to die as soon as it is picked.
Everything had to be there by ten so that judging could take place in time for the visiting “Magi of the marrows” to leave their decisions framed in certificate and pickled in rosettes.
Jackie’s husband had baked a cake.
Every year, apart from the last two scuppered by Covid, the men of the village cast aside their masculinity and strayed, shyly into the feminine world of baking. How we all laughed as Geoff bashfully presented his lemon drizzle; or Rob, his great ham hands trembling, gently placed his carrot cake on the trestle table? More familiar with a Massey Ferguson than a Moulinex and sweating within the strange constriction of his collar the cake, nevertheless, carried so

We were incredibly 'chuffed' to be invited to the opening day of the Bampton Railway Station exhibition at the Bampton Community Hall in Devon.
This lovely, hand-built exhibition runs daily until Sunday 18th at 3pm. Doors open at 10am until closing at 4pm.
Chris from the Liverpool Model Railway Society highlighted his passion for the hobby and we discovered how the build of this model started from seeing a photo during the first lockdown.
The exhibition charts the history of the railway in Bampton until its loss during Beeching's 'Reshaping' of Britain's Railways.
It's one of the many reasons to visit Bampton and discover more about the history of the greater Exmoor region.

In this Podcast recorded on a bright morning in May, Lucy and David took a trip to Leo's enchanting gallery in Minehead.
Inspired by his Exmoor and West Country surroundings, Leo's paintings change in style and feel as often as his subject. From the meticulous to the abstract, Leo refuses to settle on any particular genre of painting and continues to explore and develop ways of seeing and defining his landscapes through his works.
Leo has shown at the Royal West Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, and Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour. He has won The Evolver prize twice as well as numerous other prizes and been shortlisted in The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition many times and won the competition's Smith and Williamson Cityscape prize in 2015 and won first prize with his painting 'Condensation' in 2019.
Stunning depictions of Exmoor, West Country Landscapes, The West Somerset Railway and Birds are all available to buy as prints in various sizes on this site as well as original watercolour paintings, oil paintings, greeting cards and postcards.

On a rainy, damp day in May, Lucy and David jumped into the Outside Broadcast Truck (David's Smart Car!) and hit the south road to beautiful Bampton.
What we found was both fascinating and surprising, with the team from the Bampton Heritage and Visitor Centre being the perfect hosts (and fabulous podcasters!)
There's so much to see and do in Bampton, it's a must-visit when staying with us. The friendly local community are rightly passionate about their town and whether you're making the day of it, or simply popping in for a brunch, lunch or dinner, everyone should take time to bound in Bampton!

Earlier this Summer, we travelled to the popular and thriving harbour town of Watchet to visit Georgie and the team of the Onion Collective at East Quay.
Onion Collective is the social enterprise that conceived of, built, and now runs East Quay, working to tackle social, cultural and environmental justice in Watchet through wide reaching and ambitious regeneration projects.

At the start of May the sun was shining and we took the trip down the A396 to delightful Dulverton.
This wonderful town with a thriving, cohesive community has recently given itself a marketing refresh to help Exmoor's visitors find out much more about the place - past and present.

From soil to sparkles – preparing for the South-West Tourism Excellence AwardsSo, on April 7th, a merry band of 10 made our long and winding way in two minivans from Minehead to Sandy Park, Exeter, to celebrate. Gone were the aprons, Marigold gloves and wellies, and in their place were high heels, sparkles, fur shawls and dinner jackets.
The glittering black-tie ceremony brought together the finalists, their guests, and sponsors around the south-west. What a delight it was for everyone to celebrate achievements in person for the first time in two years! We were proud to be amongst more than 90 stand-out businesses, and world-class attractions including:

- Slimbridge Wetland Centre in Gloucester
- Stonehenge in Wiltshire

There is a large team behind the four luxury cottages that make up this business, some of whom celebrated on the night. Our professional and loyal housekeeping crew are exceptional – working with dedication and commitment through extremely busy and demanding changeovers.
Cleaning to COVID-19 protocols added a new layer of complexity, but nothing stops them in their tracks. Sam and Nick have transformed our outdoor spaces into beautiful oases of calm in the garden. Indeed, the gardens really do delight all visitors, from four-legged to two.
Dave has hot tubs under control, ably assisted by Gail and Jackie, and the occasional support from Steve, our original hot tub guru. Marketing (including our well-loved podcast), PR, website, SEO and accounts are key to this business.
Fundamental to this award were the hours put in by David, Gabrielle, Lynne, Brooke and Jenny.
A little while ago, Lucy laid down the gauntlet of David attending a future podcast with the lovely Jazz from The Ivy Beauty Lounge on Friday Street in Minehead.

Last June, in response to a number of listener questions about 'best routes to get to Exmoor', Lucy and David recorded an impromptu podcast from Taunton Railway Station to Dunster.
Whilst looking back to this time uncovers some covid-related uncomfortable memories (such as the lack of the West Somerset Railway beyond Watchet) the purpose of this 'extra-cast' is to highlight what's on offer on your way to, or returning from, Exmoor.
For seasoned visitors, of course the A358 is only part of the picture. The twisty, turny A39 snakes between Bridgwater and Minehead (and beyond) and the southern route to Tiverton (the A396) ensures an exciting car journey from the Exe valley floor to the some of the highest points on the Moor!
As Oleta Adams once said, "we don't care how you get here, but get here if you can!"

The Pandemic has created a whole new language, a sort or crisis-dialect which placed words in our vernacular seldom used in normal life.
A couple of terms which emerged in 2020 - 2021 were 'staycation', 'work-cation' and 'near-cation'. In January 2022, our friends at AirBNB even coined 'Bae-cation' which was designed to encourage friends to get together 'away' once again.
Upon further investigation, our very own website has also seen a nearcation boom! Since March 2020, visits from locations within two hours drive of Minehead have doubled and this trend has continued into Spring. It's also translating into bookings, with many guests coming from Bristol, Dorset and Wiltshire -around two hours away.
Of course, when travelling with children or dogs (a majority of our guests come with their four-legged friends), a shorter car journey is favourable.
In addition to being closer to home, Exmoor and the nearby counties of Devon and West Somerset are relatively compact, with many of our most popular attractions within an hours drive.

The Old Sweet Shop, a quintessential chocolate box cottage with thatched roof, on Vicarage Road in Minehead, has been awarded Five Star Gold by VisitEngland, and the highest accolade given by the industry’s national tourism body.In this podcast (which was recorded before the Five Star Gold award), Lucy and David talk lovingly about the sweet history of this chocolate box cottage and the people who occupied and visited here, before our custodianship.

About our cottages.
The four self-catering holiday cottages in Dunster and Minehead sleep six to eight guests and are open all year round for short breaks and longer family holidays, and well-behaved dogs are welcome too. Facilities include hot tubs (Minehead) well equipped kitchens, beautiful bedrooms with their own bathrooms, private gardens, high quality entertainment systems and cosy sitting rooms with open fireplaces (except Stone Barn). The cottages are all Christmas decorated from the middle of November to give guests the opportunity to spend more time with their family and friends and a private chef can be organised for special occasions.
2021 was a record year for occupancy and 2022 is set to be even better as an increasing number of Lucy’s guests return to enjoy another of the cottages in either Minehead or Dunster. Lucy says. “Seeing valued guests again is such a joy to us, over the years our guests have become our friends and have spent many special occasions at their favourite cottage. And in 2020 12 launched a new in-cottage dining service for guests to book for a special birthday or anniversary or simply if they want a rest from cooking! A few weeks ago, we were fortunate to visit a very special person in a unique place.
For an hour or so, we talked Art, Poetry and Music with Mo Scott, in her garden studio overlooking the River Aller in Allerford, Bossington (near Porlock).
As you will hear, Mo is both talented and incredibly grounded with a patient, calming manner - even when her dog got tangled in the microphone cable!

We're ON SAFARI again with Andrew Turner from Red Stag Safari.
In this second episode we travelled from the Porlock Vale into deepest, darkest central Exmoor with its rugged, verdant landscape. David donned his pith helmet and Lucy found an ocelot handbag and we went exploring!

Summer 2021 has been the season of the staycation, and while a few will disagree about the terminology, holidays in the UK have never been so popular!
In the last week, several media channels have questioned the value for money of UK breaks versus holidaying abroad. We believe that many of the examples cited are an unwelcome distraction to the challenges the hospitality industry has faced and continues to face as we head into a busy Autumn season.
With increasing staff and materials costs, resource shortages and enhanced cleaning regimes all still in place, running a high end self-catering business as a profitable enterprise remains a challenge.
Fortunately, thanks to a hardworking and loyal team, we've delivered consistently high standards since reopening in April and will continue to do so - forever!
In this our sixth episode of season two, an intrepid Lucy braved the squall and had a conversation with Liz, Vanessa (and others!) from Minehead Polar Bears.
These hardy swimmers have overcome lockdown malaise and got fitter and healthier by swimming in the Bristol Channel. They certainly look all the better for it, and Lucy can't wait to join them in the briny soon!
This week we were fortunate to spend some time with Sally Turner from the Minehead Information Centre, located near the railway station on Minehead's seafront.
The sun was shining, the sea was lapping and Mr. Whippy's were being served, so spirits were high!

This short walk along Minehead's historic seafront was recorded on a sunny summer day in July, from the Echo Beach cafe on the quayside to the Minehead Information Centre on Station Square.
It was bustling, warm and friendly and a 'mr whippy' ice cream was literally moments away - but not until we'd learned a little more about Minehead's rich history.
