Often times we hear about “The Year In Review”, looking back at major events that have happened in the prior year. In our personal financial lives, this is also what we do during tax preparation. Filing taxes is literally putting together a personal “Financial Year In Review”, but we are planners. This is a show about planning. Planning is about looking forward and being proactive, not looking back, being historical, or being reactive. Certainly, we can gain some knowledge from history (maybe we should gain and retain a little more), but we have to plan ahead and keep moving forward. So, this is a show about the “Year In Preview” and some of the important topics and events we will cover in the year ahead. As you look forward to the approaching new year, ready to chart your course for 2024, the prospect of setting financial goals may be on your mind. Perhaps you're aiming to eliminate lingering student loans by the next holiday season or contemplating strategies to enhance your retirement plan. Unlike the transient nature of many New Year's resolutions, effective goal-setting requires careful consideration.
Research indicates that the average New Year's resolution barely endures into the spring, and you may find yourself pondering a crucial question: How can I establish realistic and achievable financial goals for 2024? The answer lies in adopting a thoughtful approach and keeping key factors in mind from the outset. Fortunately, the pathway to setting and accomplishing high-quality financial goals is well within reach, and we're here to guide you through the essential considerations to ensure your success. For more information on this and many other important financial topics, contact Ron Courser, CFP® at (616) 301-2581 and visit the website at https://www.cornerstone-rp.com/.
’Tis the season for thinking of family and friends, for gifting, giving, and generosity. For the holidays, we generally think of bows and packages in wrapping paper. Of course, these gifts cost money and we should try to be responsible with the way we spend throughout the holidays. On a larger scale, we should also consider our ongoing financial impact through gifting and giving strategies to family, as well as any outside gifts, giving, or donations we make to charities, churches, or organizations. We are in the midst of what has been dubbed the “Great Wealth Transfer” as the accumulated wealth of one generation of Americans transfers to the next. We should think proactively and plan strategically for how our wealth will be effectively preserved, protected, and utilized both during our lifetime, and after. Let’s talk about planning for the holidays, planning for retirement, and gifting, giving, and donating our wealth. For more information on this and many other important financial topics, contact Ron Courser, CFP® at (616) 301-2581 and visit the website at https://www.cornerstone-rp.com/.
You have always first and foremost had an income plan. When you set your alarm so that you get up to show up for work, put in your time and sweat equity to perform your tasks, and trade that time for money, that is your income plan. You plan to repeat that routine overtime to earn a living, manage your bills, and to support your ability to save for retirement. That is an income plan! The INCOME PLAN is what supports your lifestyle and your investment plan. The stability and predictability of the income you generate is what allows you to feel comfortable investing a portion of your money into accounts intended for years into the future during retirement. The income plan is what allows you to weather down market cycles without dramatic impacts to your lifestyle. The income plan is what provides you the means to have an investment plan at all. In both your working career and in retirement, you live on your income, not your assets, but the income plan is what you leave behind when you retire! You have to recreate it with assets! For more information contact Ron Courser, CFP® at (616) 301-2581 and visit the website at https://www.cornerstone-rp.com/.

One of the best opportunities to prepare assets for retirement occurs when we have the opportunity to access retirement accounts at 591/2. First, at age 591/2 you have the ability to pull from retirement accounts without the additional 10% penalty. If you need income to support yourself, this is the traditional milestone that allows you to utilize tax-deferred accounts like 401(k)’s and IRA’s. Additionally, more and more employer sponsored retirement plans are allowing participant employees to remove funds from the employer’s plan and reposition them to their own Individual Retirement Accounts, while still continuing to work and participate in future and on-going contributions, as well as continue to capture any company matching. This can be advantageous in offering the ability for a wider range and selection of investment options and selecting vehicles more appropriate for retirement goals. It also can allow for greater flexibility for things like the consideration of Roth conversions to manage taxes in retirement. In this episode, you can see what an average rate of return can do to an investment portfolio through the example graphics on the screen. Ron Courser, CFP®, explains and discusses the reasons behind potential issues that could arise if you stick with an average rate of return. However, there are indeed other alternatives instead of adhering to a singular outcome throughout retirement. This is because prices are not always going to remain the same for essentials like cars and groceries. Just this year alone, we witnessed eggs skyrocketing to $18 in price.
Furthermore, Ron Courser, CFP®, delves into the possibility of experiencing losses despite your initial gains. For more information and to gain insights into the reasons behind this, watch this episode of 'Your Course To Retirement' presented by Ron Courser, CFP®, from Cornerstone Retirement Partners.

Every dollar has a tax plan associated with it. Taxation is one of your largest known expenses in retirement. Deferred taxes during your working career and investment growth means more taxes in retirement on income withdrawals, as well as on inheritance. Here in Michigan, the change and difference in seasons is pretty stark. Preparing for winter is strategic and certain things must be done ahead of time, while the weather is good.
"Do I have enough fire wood to would last?" "Is the heat maintained and working?" "Do we have a backup generator in case the power goes out?" "When is the last time I fired up the snowblower?"
This preparation can be a good comparison for retirement. There are questions that you need to regularly ask yourself and review, and the best time to do so is BEFORE any rough "weather". "Do I have enough saved to withdraw income and keep up with my lifestyle?" "If working stopped, today how long could income last without that regular paycheck coming in?"
There are many questions that people should ask themselves (and answer) while in preparation of retirement. Unfortunately, sometimes these questions get asked too late. Ron Courser, CFP® and the team at Cornerstone Retirement Partners work to make sure all their clients and proactive planners have answers to these questions, are prepared for retirement (and the "winters" that may come throughout retirement), and have a Course To Retirement written plan in place.
Winter always comes and will be here before you know it. Are you prepared?

Investors may be familiar with the term “Dollar Cost Averaging” and may understand what it means and how it works. When contributions cease however, do we still get ALL of the same advantages from investing? What about when dollars reverse direction and start creating income for us in retirement? This has been called “Dollar Cost Ravaging” or “Sequence of Returns Risk”, but what does this mean and how does it work. Ron Courser, CFP® explains on this week's edition of Your Course To Retirement.
Market indexes recently saw their longest successive weekly losing streak since 2001 and investors may be understandably nervous, but are there any reasonable alternatives to risking losses and money in the markets? Tune in this week as Ron Courser discusses fixed rate products, bonds, I-Bonds, Treasuries, structured notes, inflation protection, principal protection, income protection, and what kind of growth expectations are reasonable in this environment.
We have seen some recent instability in the markets. It has invoked a lot of emotion from some investors. Just because we see market volatility or believe it may be coming does not mean we should stop our financial progress or put off goals out of fear. Fear is not a stop sign. Caution is always prudent, but fear should never determine the steps in your financial progress. Listen this week as Ron Courser explains realities within the market that can effect people in every way so be sure to don't miss it!.
Market #volatility continues through the month of May. The #Fed has reversed course and the market generally does not like change. Since 2008, the Fed has been lowering interest rates and simultaneously buying trillions in mostly US Treasuries. They knew they were taking a risk with simulative policies and putting all this cheap liquidity out into the open market. To put it simply, money (liquidity) has been plentiful and cheap to access. Now the Fed is looking to take out some of the excess stimulus efforts while making accessing money more expensive, and they are doing it pretty quickly. We understand that market downturns and volatility can make you feel anxious. We welcome your questions and would be happy to talk through your concerns. Please call Ron Courser with questions, or schedule a complimentary consultation.
On Mother’s Day Weekend, the thought probably crosses our mind of how much our family and loved ones (specifically mother’s, but maybe others) have cared for us. It takes a “life’s purpose” kind of dedication. It can be extremely difficult at times and even in easy times, comes with challenges. Today’s “Sandwich Generation” is faced with even further complications and challenges in our best efforts to care for loved ones. A cold reality is that sometimes the care and support we can provide is all about money. From a financial perspective, careful planning is the best thing we can do to support our family, and not place undue burden on our loved ones. Listen as Ron Courser discusses the steps and approach to caring for our loved ones on this week’s edition of Your Course To Retirement.
