It's hard to let go and delegate tasks, even if you know it's the right thing to do for your business.

You're probably feeling a lot of pressure to do everything yourself. You might be worried that delegation doesn’t feel natural and that you’re not good at it as a Leader.

Just because delegation doesn’t come naturally to you…does not mean you cannot better.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  2. We become what we repeatedly do — this is why you have to talk yourself into delegating
  3. Three ways to strengthen your rusty delegation muscles

If you’ve read the news lately, you have likely heard about quiet quitting.

Unlike what the name suggests, quiet quitting isn’t about terminating your employment. It means to fly under the radar and do exactly what’s required of you as an employee — no more, no less.

In a word, it’s coasting.

This phenomenon is an organized response to burnout culture. It’s a way to “opt-out” of the hustling lifestyle.

As you can imagine…I have thoughts.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  1. What is quiet quitting and how it caught on as a “movement”
  2. Research from Harvard Business Review on what improves employee performance (and what contributes to quiet quitting)
  3. How quiet quitting is a call to action for employees and Leaders — and what to do next!

Here are other resources I mention:

  • “Quiet Quitting Is About Bad Bosses, Not Bad Employees,” Harvard Business Review
  • Cameron Herold

Are you tired of being in the weeds of your business? Do you spend all day separating the forest from the trees… when you want to be in the clouds casting vision?

In today’s episode, I want to debunk the myth that you have to be worthy of an Executive Assistant. I hear this excuse all the time from leaders of all levels — they think they are UNWORTHY — and it makes me nuts!

We should NOT be making business decisions based on our perceived “worthiness.”

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Why so many Leaders think they are “unworthy” of an Executive Assistant
  • The impact of emotion, social bias, and social influence on our purchasing decisions
  • The truth about why an EA is NOT a selfish hire — despite what your fears tell you
  • How hiring an EA creates the capacity for you to thrive in your role as a Leader

Here are other resources I mention:

Everyone has been affected by grief at some point in life. You may have experienced a devastating loss of a friend or family member or felt America’s collective grief during the pandemic, a contentious election, and news of war.

In grief, we are saddled between two worlds. One in which we feel devastating loss. In the other, we show up for work, go on vacation, watch funny movies and give ourselves permission to feel joy and laughter.

Here to help us navigate these two worlds is my friend Dr. Sherry Walling. Sherry is a clinical psychologist, speaker, podcaster, author, and mental health advocate. Her company, ZenFounder, helps entrepreneurs and leaders navigate transition, rapid growth, loss and conflict.

In today’s episode, we discuss:

  • Sherry’s second book, Touching Two Worlds, explores new strategies for finding wholeness in the aftermath of loss.
  • Why leaders may have a hard time addressing mental health topics with their teams
  • How Sherry personally experienced grief and loss (and its effect on her career)
  • Why the Great Resignation was a wake-up call for employers
  • Comparative suffering, compartmentalization, and what it means for us to “touch two worlds”

Here are other resources I mention:

Your engagement as a leader is how YOU best serve your team. Why? Because your engagement DRIVES everything we have discussed in this Retention Roadmap Series.

Engagement is how you equip, empower and encourage your team to do their best work. When you engage, you remove roadblocks, drive clarity, empower others to act on your behalf and give your team tools to get the job done.

Here’s the catch.

In order to engage well, you need to know yourself well. You need to know both what YOU require and what your team requires.

In today’s episode, I want to discuss:

  • Why you need self-awareness about when to engage or not

  • A simple structure for consistent engagement with your EA so you can stay connected

  • The importance sharing how you prefer to engage

  • Why a lack of engagement can strain your relationship

Are annual performance evaluations worth your time as a Leader? Do they really inspire better performance with your team?

This topic is divisive. Many Leaders are split on the annual review’s effectiveness. I still use them, but not as a standalone system for feedback. Your team deserves more than that.

They need empowerment, encouragement and engagement to thrive. They also need to feel safe to tell you how YOU can improve, too.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • How to make the annual review a mutually beneficial meeting
  • Why you might want to consider adopting quarterly reviews
  • Why real time feedback is MORE important than annual benchmarks
  • And finally, I’m going to share questions to ask during your meeting to improve your team’s morale and empowerment

What if onboarding didn’t have to feel like three months of feeling impatient for your team to ramp-up?

We know you are anxious for your new teammate to get up to speed. But without the lay of the land, without a solid foundation for success, it will actually take longer for your team to own their role.

Onboarding doesn’t have to come from you. It could be from your director of operations or your assistant, but every new teammate needs SOMETHING.

In today’s episode, I want to discuss:

  1. How to set onboarding expectations for your new hire’s first year -- yes, I said YEAR!
  2. What to emphasize in your onboarding to set your new hire on the right track
  3. Tips for onboarding success in a remote environment
  4. What you CAN do to get your new hire up to speed as quickly as possible.

Right now is my favorite time of year for many reasons, but selfishly, it’s because October through March is the busy season for us! Leaders are ready to say YES to getting support. They seek us out to help them with hiring a fractional or full-time Executive Assistant.

I was thinking about all the work we do and wanted to debunk a question I get asked all the time. That question is, “Is there a ‘best time’ to hire?”

If you do a simple Google search of this question, you’ll find that a lot of people think the best time to hire is in the New Year - in January or February.

In fact, that’s when many job seekers are advised to start applying.

In my opinion, there is no universal “best time” to hire. Everyone’s needs are different. But, there is a best time for YOU.

In today’s episode, I want to discuss:

  1. How to know it is the BEST time for YOUR organization to hire
  2. Why you shouldn’t WAIT for the new year, just because a Google article says so
  3. What you need to have ready so you can hit the ground running with your new teammate

Nearly 4.3 million workers have voluntarily quit their jobs in search of better opportunities, whether that’s at home with their kids or with an employer who offers better work-life balance.

Economists have dubbed this mass exodus as The Great Resignation. With so many people out of the workforce, employers are struggling to attract applicants for open positions.

Many Leaders like you feel afraid to hire. Candidates have greater expectations for flexibility. Leaders feel like they have to compromise on their reasonable work standards.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • Why hiring is HARD, but worth it, even during economically trying times
  • Why you should fear STAGNATION and delaying hiring
  • How to prepare for your first or NEXT hire when the stakes are high
  • How to avoid making a DESPERATE hiring decision
  • What to consider as a LEADER when the eyes are on you!

How do you measure success? Do you measure it by bottom-line revenue? Client retention? Or team morale?

Every leader has a different definition of success. Warren Buffet said he measures success by how many people love him. Other leaders measure it by their ability to do what they love.

As you process what success means to you, I want to challenge you to measure it in a new way.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • Why I chose to define success differently from when I first started Priority VA

  • How to increase your freedom as a Leader

  • Why freedom changes your definition of success AND failure...and inspires you to celebrate yourself way more often.

Rebranding is a massive undertaking. Most companies rebrand every 7 to 10 years — Priority VA is no exception.

As we bring our company brand into the future of how we serve, I want to talk about signs you might be ready for a brand shift.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:
- Signs I knew our brand messaging was off (and how that affected sales!)
- What I wish I knew 8 years ago about choosing a brand name
- How to stay true to yourself in the face of change

Core desires come from deep needs. For a long time, I needed to experience freedom from depression and anxiety.

Today we’re talking about something I suffer from every. Damn. day. It is DECISION FATIGUE.

The longer I lead, the more I get why some people wear black T-Shirts and jeans every single day. It’s so they have the bandwidth to decide what book cover they want, or what to name their next masterclass.

It’s hard making decisions all day, every day.

Instead of wallowing in self-pity that we don’t have every answer, I’m going to challenge us to consider...

Maybe decision fatigue isn’t about the decision at all. Maybe it’s a symptom of insecurity, or a lack of accountability. Or, the fact that you haven’t eaten in 9 hours, or you haven’t had a break all day.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • How INSECURITY can cause decision fatigue
  • 5 ideas for OVERCOMING mental blocks that keep you from solving problems
  • Why you need to create SPACE for strategic thinking

When Simone Biles withdrew from multiple Olympic events for her mental health, she received an outpouring of support.

In a statement she said, “The outpouring of love and support...has made me realize I am much more than my accomplishments and gymnastics, which I never truly believed before.”

Her words struck me because she captured an experience we all share. We all are guilty of connecting our worth with our work. Or believing we are only as good as our accomplishments.

We make “what we do” the same as “who we are.”

I want to change that.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear:

  • Why it’s NORMAL to connect your worth with your work

  • The importance of finding your value in WHO you are, rather than the title you’ve achieved

  • How to start to find yourself again, after the continuous loop of consuming your identity in your business.

No matter what your business is, you serve people

You’re not just “doing stuff” or “providing a service” -- you are solving a problem that a person has.

The trouble is, many of us start looking at the people we serve in a silo. We don’t see them, or serve them, as a “whole person.”

I believe all Leaders are capable of serving the whole person. Ready to find out how? Listen to today’s episode to learn.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • How to view the whole person BEYOND the ideal customer avatar

  • Why it’s OK to pushback on what your client THINKS they need

  • Why you must care about ALL aspects of your client, not just ONE area of their life or business

  • How to let your client be the HERO so you can be the guide.

Have you ever been in a relationship — whether it was a friendship, marriage or member of your family — that got strained?

It sucks, doesn’t it?

Even if you’re someone who is comfortable having hard conversations, it’s hard to face someone who has let you down, or to call an elephant out in the room when something isn’t working.

Every relationship will have strain, including the one with your Assistant.

This is NORMAL. But that doesn’t mean the relationship can stay there if you two are ever going to grow.

Today, I’m going to share 3 strategies to help you recalibrate the strained relationship you have with your EA.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • How going back to onboarding BASICS can save you and your Leader’s working relationship.

  • Why practicing grace and FORGIVENESS helps you see and value the whole person.

  • How to be sure the road to repair is a TEAM effort — and what to do if it’s not.

This episode is for the “figure it out people.” The ones who don't need to be told what to do in order to make some really great things happen.

I know from experience that when you work as an Executive Assistant, you can be asked to help your Executive with almost everything. Planning a funeral, catching and relocating a groundhog, or revising an itinerary when a lunch and a flight conflict.

How do you make it work? Well, you figure it out.

Today, I want to talk about why as a Leader it’s OK and important to want to work with people who are capable of “figuring it out.”

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • Why as a Leader it’s OK and important to want to work with people who are capable of “figuring it out.”

  • How your team can exceed your expectations when you don’t solve problems for them.

  • Why not everything is fair game to ask of your assistant -- boundaries are important!

  • How to empower your team to make decisions on your behalf, while allowing mistakes to happen.

There is so much FREEDOM that comes with delegation.

It’s an investment, it takes work, but it pays dividends to your mental health and time with family to be able to step away, eat dinner with your kids and know that your business is still OK.

The actual act of delegating is often the crux of success for an entrepreneur.

It is NOT intuitive and is not something most CEOs are excited to do! Let’s be honest, we’re control freaks!

I say delegation is the crux of success because it is HOW you can create and SUSTAIN massive momentum in your business. It is how you achieve SCALE.

This episode is part 3 of the 4 D’s of Delegation Mastery: Decide (what to delegate), Document (your process), Delegate (like a master), Detach (empower your team).

Make sure you listen to the previous episodes to lay a foundation for what we discuss today!

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • The 4 steps to delegating like a MASTER.
  • You might think you are OK with delegating...but are you?
  • How to STOP hovering and micromanaging and start TRUSTING.
  • Why we advocate for outsourcing OUTCOMES not tasks.
  • How to effectively use the 6 levels of delegation to grow an EMPOWERED team.

In today’s episode, I am going to teach you how to delegate through DOCUMENTING your processes.

Documentation and delegation are how you set your business up to scale.

Why is documenting each process so important? Because most tasks in your business are repeatable processes.

Documentation also ensures that repeatable processes are done the same way every time.

This episode is part 2 of the 4 D’s of Delegation Mastery: Decide (what to delegate), Document (your process), Delegate (like a master), Detach (empower your team).

Make sure you listen to last week’s episode if you need a refresher on how to decide what to delegate. It will set the foundation for what we discuss today.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • 3 steps for documenting your processes
  • The importance of creating an ORGANIZED place to store your work
  • The difference between a SYSTEM and a template
  • How to DOCUMENT with efficiency and clarity
  • Why you also need to document your PERSONAL preferences to create an Executive Database

A quickstart moves fast, is willing to improvise, shakes things up with innovation and likes to experiment to see what will happen.

Tackling problems as a quickstart is a calling card for most visionaries….but if you move REALLY fast...it can intimidate and frustrate your team.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

I feel like no matter what time of year it is or what’s going on in the world, there is ALWAYS a good time to talk about burnout!

Most of us can’t take a hint that it is time to PULL BACK from the work that is draining our ability to engage and relate with our team and customers.

We wait until breaking points before we start to take our physical and mental health seriously.

Why is that? Why are we so afraid to do less and chase slow when our body is demanding rest and recovery from burnout?

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • Why burnout PREVENTION is just as important -- if not more important -- than burnout RECOVERY.

  • Why burnout is more than just “another form of stress.”

  • The 5 stages of burnout and the WARNING signs to look out for

  • 6 steps to healthy coping and how a trusted TEAM can have your back

There’s an interesting phenomenon that happens after I match an Executive Assistant with a CEO.

A Leader will FINALLY have help...and then they don’t delegate anything.

After spending hours, months or years WISHING they had support, the moment they have that person available...leaders hold onto work with a tight fist.

If this sounds like you, you’re not alone.

Today we are going to unpack the reasons you are NOT delegating work. Then, I’m going to share some tips to make delegation and onboarding your EA more successful.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • The 5 reasons leaders DON’T delegate and WHY these roadblocks work against you in the long-run

  • How mentorship during the first 100 days can lay a foundation for long-term success.

  • The 2 ways to define what success looks like for your EA

  • The importance of transparency to reduce uncertainty

  • Why I advocate for encouraging your EA to own their role — and outcomes — not tasks

Brutal honesty can attract or repel people. It’s not for everybody...and that’s the point.

  • Why business leaders are AFRAID to be authentic in their job descriptions
  • The PITFALLS of using code words to describe company culture
  • What inspired my change to show exactly who I am and what my company stands for
  • The brutally HONEST job description I wrote
  • The shockingly great results we’re seeing as a result

I’m pretty lucky that I can put on an alter ego like nobody’s business and be “on” when I need to. It’s a learned skill, perfected over time when I had to fill a role bigger than I was.

It’s not always the healthiest choice, but it’s served me well many times.

Unfortunately, there are some learned skills that never leave us. Like being able to be “on” and appear confident, when inside, we feel like an insecure teenager.

Today, we’re talking about imposter syndrome, the insidious small voice inside that makes us question the validity of our success, or like an accidental entrepreneur. Imposter syndrome invites us to believe we are unworthy and that we don’t belong.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • The lies that Imposter Syndrome whispers to even the most accomplished business leaders

  • What I call “the belief window” and how it affects our ability to RECEIVE praise

  • My experience with Imposter Syndrome and how I reconcile that I DO belong

  • Why working hard and NOT doing everything yourself does NOT make you a fraud

A teammate’s ability to take root and blossom in our workplace has a LOT to do with the environment we CREATE for them.

If someone doesn’t make the cut — they might be a bad seed — but we MIGHT be bad gardeners.

I’m also going to be super transparent about something in my life I haven’t really talked about before, so I appreciate your willingness to listen and receive me as I am — messiness and all.

In today’s episode you’ll hear:

  • How, just like a garden, what you put into your team relationships, you will get OUT of them.

  • How to create space for your team to THRIVE

  • What we can do right now as Leaders to CULTIVATE a new teammate’s success

  • Ways to NOURISH your team, remove weeds and BE a better gardener or Leader

Every relationship has a honeymoon period — the time when you feel all the warm fuzzies and can’t imagine ever feeling anything but POSITIVE about the future.

  • What to expect from each stage AND how to navigate them as a leader

Diversity and inclusion have always been important.

Different voices, experiences and perspectives enrich your life and business.

Inclusivity is more than just checking a box. Diverse teams are statistically proven to capture new markets. They make better decisions and hit their financial targets.

Why? Because when a workplace is inclusive...its people feel empowered. They are able to come together to work harder and meet the goals of the company.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear:

How do we show up as lean, mean, fighting machines for our companies, without compromising our sanity?

The answer is pretty simple:

We need to be DISCIPLINED to protect our most valuable assets: our money, our time, and our energy.

This is easier said than done.

Left to our own devices -- or without accountability -- we waste our time juggling tasks that could easily be delegated.

We make excuses for poor judgment with our finances.

We believe we must do everything in our business, which drains our energy.

In this episode, I am going to share with you how we can combat the vicious cycles that keep us from optimizing our money, time, and energy.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear:

  • Ways to be disciplined in your money, time and, energy
  • The Momentum Method-- our lean, mean, bootstrapping-approved online course to help you grow your business on a BUDGET.
  • How to connect with me!

If you find yourself wondering what it takes to build a great company, you may have read Jim Collins’ book, “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap…And Others Don’t.”

This book was originally published in 2001 and it’s sort of considered a “classic” as far as business books go.

I recently had to re-read Good to Great…and while I wasn’t especially excited about re-reading it, there were lessons from that book that took on new meaning for me the second time around.

Today, I’m going to share FOUR timeless lessons from “Good to Great” that I’m working to reintegrate into my business and how you can do the same with help from your team.

In this episode, you’ll hear four timeless lessons and learn how they play into your business:

#1- My role as a Leader

#2- Culture of Discipline

#3 The Hedgehog Concept

#4 Stockdale Paradox

These may not make sense out of context, but they will be instrumental in leading your company to greatness.

I read a 2020 study that said 90 percent of employees would leave an employer who did not show empathy. Can you believe that? 90 percent! That could determine if most of your talents stay or goes, whether you can lead with empathy.

Paying attention to HOW we lead is more important than ever, as it is having a monumental impact on this industry.

I see three trends shaping the future of Executive Assistants that you’ll want to know.

Whether you are listening as a leader or as an Executive Assistant, you will get a lot from this conversation.

Leaders — I hope what you hear today broadens your understanding of how you can relate with your EA. I hope it strengthens trust, connection and positively influences your company culture by giving you behavior to model for your team.

EAs — You will have plenty of actionable advice after this episode. I hope it challenges you to step outside of your comfort zone or to feel confident in the skills you already possess. It may also encourage a conversation you’ve been meaning to have with your CEO, which could be the start of a deeper, more trusting relationship.

Don’t underestimate the potential of your relationship with an EA.

In this episode, you will hear:

I was an EA for more than 20 years and trust me, I have seen it all — the good, the bad, and the crazy. An EA is more than an “assistant”; they are a trusted partner. An EA can offer skills beyond administrative tasks, and once a leader recognizes that, the real work can begin.

The relationship between a CEO and an EA are unique. At PVA we mentor each to ensure they are successful, so you do not have to do it alone.

Cultivating this relationship isn’t always easy. In this episode, I am going to share the 10 mistakes leaders make with their EAs every day, so that you can avoid them with your own EA.

In this episode, you will hear:

  1. Feels good to say that finally. Last year challenged all of us in ways that we never thought possible, and with only 10 days left in this sh*t show of a year, I can definitely say that I am glad to look towards better days ahead.

However, with a flip of the calendar, things won’t automatically change. What does this new year look like for leaders? How can you keep your company afloat and morale high, while making massive changes during this “phase of disruption?’

My mindset for this year is simply one word; renew. Renew my health, my obligations, and my goals. I want to invite you to renew with me, and in this podcast, we will navigate, together, ways that you can lead with strength in this new year.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What have I been up to over the last few months?
  • Mindset for the new year (hint: it’s renew)
  • Five ways to lead with strength in the new year
  • I challenge you - do you have what it takes?

It has been almost two years since I started this podcast. I seriously cannot believe that we're already in our 100th episode!

First of all, I am grateful for each of you that has come alongside me on this journey.

In today's episode, I want to reflect back on what it's been like recording the Diary Of A Doer every single week. I'm going to talk about the lessons I've learned, the challenges I've faced, and what I'm looking forward to in the future with you.

To be honest, I don't know exactly what the Trivinia brand is yet. I don’t have it all figured out, and that’s okay. But one thing I know for sure is that I could have never gotten to this place without the consistency of recording.

And it blows my mind to think that I have sat at this desk and recorded the Diary Of A Doer every week for almost two years. This is unlike anything I have done in my life or business.

Now, I'm looking back at 100 episodes with a renewed feeling that my voice matters – and your voice matters, too!

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Challenges I faced in doing the podcast
  • What has motivated me to show up each week
  • How to find your voice
  • Finding out what you don't want to help point you to what you do want

Trust yourself when something doesn't feel right.

Arrgh! Easier said than done, isn’t it?

If you’re a people-pleaser or have this FOMO (fear of missing out) on every little shiny object you come across, trusting yourself to say NO to things is just the hardest thing ever!

But when you learn to practice using your voice because you know that some things are just “no for now,” you create space and room in your life for the things we really want.

When you learn to trust your instinct, you start to get what you want.

Today, I'm going to give you permission to say hell NO to the things that don't have your “hell yes” of approval. And it takes a hell of a lot of practice too!

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What happens when you say “hell yes” all the time
  • The benefits of saying “hell no”
  • 3 pesky barriers that keep you from following your intuition
  • 4 results when you live by this rule

Do you always have a contingency plan for when things don’t work out?

Are you planning for the worst all the time?

Do you identify yourself as a pessimist?

Pessimism can be good for anticipating the challenges you have in your company.

But it’s not good when it’s the only thing that you do – every time.

The good news is that pessimism isn't a fixture of who you are. You can retrain your thinking so you can become an optimist.

And I’m living proof of that!

Today, I'm going to share with you my journey to seeing rays of sunshine on cloudy days, the impact of optimism on my team, and how to find power in your pause.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What is pessimism?
  • Why you probably shouldn’t live by defensive pessimism
  • Finding power in the pause, not pessimism
  • Little things you can do to pivot away from being a pessimist to an optimist

Think of the moments when you experienced having a horrible boss.

Pretty sure it felt crappy!

According to a Gallup survey, half of U.S. employees left a company because of a bad boss. This is fueled by the belief that people don't leave companies – they leave bad managers.

So, why are there are so many horrible bosses and leaders out there?

Rather than dwelling on the bad side, I want to transform how you view poor leadership into something that can help improve your leadership.

Today, I’m going to share the lessons I learned from my bad bosses and how their mistakes impacted my leadership for good.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • My early experiences in the workforce and some exposure to bad bosses
  • 5 reasons people become bad leaders
  • Effects of poor leadership on employees
  • The triangle of trust, training, and traction
  • The 4 E’s in supporting your team

To be an effective leader, you need to set goals, have a vision, strategize, and communicate.

But just a quick question – in all of the time that you spend attending workshops, webinars, or masterminds to improve those skills, how much of that same effort is spent on improving your emotional intelligence?

Do you even know what emotional intelligence means, to begin with?

Emotional intelligence accounts for 67% of the abilities necessary for exemplary leadership performance. Hard skills alone no longer determine a candidate's right fit for a leadership role and what made the difference was their soft skills.

Today, I want to share why emotional intelligence should be on your radar as a leader. I'm going to dive into how it helps you, your team, and your company go further as well as some practical tips to help you grow in this area.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • What emotional intelligence is and why you should care
  • Symptoms of low emotional intelligence
  • The 3 types of brain function
  • Why it serves you to acknowledge your past trauma
  • The 4-step strategy that helps you move back to high brain function
  • 5 simple strategies to grow your emotional intelligence

Building a business on your own terms is easier said than done.

The online space for a business owner is littered with voices, gurus, experts, and thought leaders who tout themselves as the consummate experts for achieving success.

So you try all these ideas and methodologies in your organization. But trying to chase every new fad or every best practice to come on the scene is like riding a neverending roller coaster.

What happens when their ideas don't pay off?

Or when you realize that after years of taking other people's advice, you've built your business on the wisdom of others – rather than your own instinct or desires?

Today, I'm tackling this idea of building your business on your own terms, not what the guru says you should want and how to trust your vision for the future.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The pitfalls of listening to gurus, influencers, and thought leaders at the mercy of our own desires
  • Neglecting to look inward in figuring out what you really want
  • Steps to discovering what you really want
  • The need to take action even in the absence of clarity
  • Redefining success to do the work that fills you up
  • Changing course no matter where you are in your journey
  • Focusing on your ideas that breed confidence

Whether you’re new in your business or a seasoned entrepreneur, we all hit different upper limits.

The faster you can break through them and create new habits, new thoughts, and new beliefs on the other side, the faster you can create that momentum.

However, the biggest disconnect among struggling entrepreneurs is that they don't understand how mindset impacts their revenue and their profit.

And if you think positive thinking and vision boards are just not cutting it for you, you’re probably right – because it essentially needs more work than that!

Today, we have Kelly Ruta, the Millionaire Mindset Mentor. Kelly is an expert in entrepreneurial mindset mastery. She's a seasoned psychotherapist turned speaker, mentor, and coach.

Kelly has taken her clinical training, formal education experience, expertise, and personal healing from the last 27 years to help women create the shifts they need to transform from a bottleneck to a badass in their business.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Who needs to have a mindset coach
  • How your upper limit differs based on where you are in your business journey
  • Why self-help books and vision boards not enough
  • What causes women to be the bottleneck in their businesses
  • How building a team can trigger your trauma
  • How subconscious programming occurs and how to overcome self-sabotage

Who you think you are – is NOT really who you are.

Each day, we wear so many different hats, as a mother/father, entrepreneur, writer, brother/sister, teacher, friend, whatever that looks like for you.

We have all these roles that we have to play, and on top of that, we’re constantly inundated with job responsibilities, errands, tasks, and social media stuff.

We are so busy that we forget to take a step back, listen, and just – breathe.

My guest today is Jeff Goins. Jeff is a friend, a writer, a speaker, and an entrepreneur. He is the best selling author of five books, including The Art of Work and Real Artists Don’t Starve.

His award-winning blog goinswriter.com is visited by millions of people every year. Through his online courses, events, and coaching programs, Jeff has helped thousands of writers succeed every single year.

Get ready for this powerful conversation about chasing what scares you, not shrinking back in the face of crisis, and seeking your true self.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Reacting vs. responding
  • The power of a pause
  • Seeing people as projections of you
  • How to respond in times of crisis
  • Finding grace in saying sorry
  • What “getting into your body” means
  • The authenticity conversation: letting go of the person you think you are
  • You don’t have a soul – you are a soul!

Are there days when you think your team is constantly letting you down or that nobody can get things right?

Then, have you ever thought that the problem could actually be not your team – but you?

It’s really challenging to look at yourself in the mirror and discover your flaws. But you have to learn to get real and honest with yourself about how you’ve contributed to the problems you’re seeing within your team or in your business.

In today’s episode, I’m going to share with you these 5 burning questions to help you along this journey of transformation.

Change has to happen and it has to start with you. Then you’ll create this beautiful domino effect that will transform your team and your business in the process.

Have you ever dreamed of being up on stage to deliver a message but you don't actually know where to start?

What should you be talking about?

How can you stand out when everybody seems to be doing the same?

How much should you charge for?

If your goal is to become a successful public speaker and you want to really pursue speaking as a business, our guest today will show you how to get there.

Grant Baldwin is a "normal" guy from Tennessee who began his career as a youth pastor. He then pivoted to launch a successful speaking career even without a crazy backstory or a celebrity following.

Grant has now established himself as a popular keynote speaker.

He's the founder and CEO of SpeakerLab.com, a training company for speakers and the curator of the popular podcast The Speaker Lab. He runs an online training program called Booked and Paid to Speak where he has already trained thousands of speakers.

Grant is the author of the book The Successful Speaker, which is filled with Grant's experience and advice whether you're a brand new speaker or you've been in the circuit for a while and you just need help increasing your bookings and fees.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How to get started and why you can’t cast a wide net in speaking to everyone
  • How to stand out and differentiate yourself on stage
  • How to know what specific topics people are going to pay you to come to talk about
  • How you can be a better speaker right away
  • You as the steakhouse (not the buffet) and your talk as the signature dish

Is there something that you’ve always wanted to do – but the idea of failing freaks you out so you’d rather do nothing instead?

Sure, things may not work out perfectly all the time. There are hiccups along the way where falling is inevitable.

But falling is not failing.

Falling is when you get back on your feet to start again.

Failing is when you never try at all.

In today's episode, I talk about my half-marathon experience, the lessons I’ve learned from falling, and how you can apply them to your business as well.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • My half-marathon story
  • Why you need to do something even if it’s not your best
  • How showing up for yourself is an investment
  • Why you can’t compare apples with airplanes
  • Training with your tribe and people

Let’s be honest, consistency is one of the hardest things in life.

I admit… I’ve struggled with this my entire life!

I’m a quick starter. I can start out of the gate – like super amazing fast! Whether it's exercise or diet or working on a project.

But then I fade pretty quickly.

And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one struggling with making a new habit stick for good.

Believe it or not, the problem might be that you're not thinking small enough.

You can actually develop a habit in less than 5 days!

My guest today is Linda Fogg-Phillips. She’s an author, speaker, consultant and mom of eight. Linda is also the director of Tiny Habits Academy, a program that teaches people how to create new, lasting habits quickly and easily using the science-based method called Tiny Habits® that was created by her brother, Dr. BJ Fogg.

Be sure to stick around so you can learn the secrets to developing better routines for a better personal life and a better work environment!

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The Fogg Behavior Model explained
  • The 3 parts of the Tiny Habits® recipe
  • How long it takes to create a habit
  • The celebration blitz, swarm of behaviors, and focused mapping
  • Applying the Tiny Habits® method to your team

Have you ever been told to surround yourself with people who disagree with you?

Or are you this headstrong leader who’s not open to other people’s ideas?

You may view disagreement as a form of dissension and disrespect, and worry this might undermine your vision.

But as leaders, we have to be open to people disagreeing with us. You want people who disagree with you because iron sharpens iron.

If we’re left unchecked, we can lead with some blinders on.

Sparks will fly for sure – but in the end, we will have a sharper focus and an impact as a business.

Today, I will talk about how you can set up a framework for how you can share disagreement within your team in a healthy, productive way.

A person isn't wrong, simply because they disagree. It's usually a sign that there needs to be more communication – and once that conversation takes place, progress can happen.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Why we need people who disagree with us
  • Areas of disagreement in your business
  • How to facilitate healthy disagreement with your team
  • How to intentionally build a team of diverse minds who complement your personality and share your values

I'm not usually a glass-half-full kind of person, but I can't stop staring at the silver lining of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There has been an amazing demonstration of radical service to others.

Brooks Brothers and Under Armour manufactured medical masks.

New York landlords allowed tenants to skip months of rent.

Snowboarders are donating goggles to healthcare workers.

Xerox is producing disposable ventilators.

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

As a nation, we've helped each other in ways we never thought possible.

We don't often know what we're capable of until we're faced with an opportunity that requires action. And it is especially in these times of crisis that we respond with the values we hold dear to us.

Today, I’m talking about radical service – why it’s a value you need to uphold in every season of your life, what it can look like in your company, and how you can do it while still taking care of yourself.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How serving others can save you and connect you to opportunities
  • Takeaways from Adam Grant's book Give and Take
  • How you can practice radical service within your team
  • The harm of selfless giving, why it’s detrimental to yourself, and how to address it

We're so used to getting things happening fast. We want fast internet, fast food, fast weight loss results, and whatnot.

And we want the same for our business – we want to fast-track our success.

We think that success equals rapid scale and growth – wrong!

When we first start out as business owners, we don't always exactly know what we want. We're not always sure we're going in the right direction.

The problem is when we scale our business at rocket speed, we might realize that we've actually built the wrong business after it’s already too late.

What I quickly learned is that you can’t confuse momentum with speed.

Today, I talk about why we should pursue momentum and how that can make a positive impact on our life and business.

I'm a firm believer that scaling with momentum rather than speed equals success. You have to slow down enough to make sure you’re going in the right direction and you’re building the business that you really want!

In this episode, you will hear:

  • 3 problems associated with chasing speed
  • The benefits of seeking momentum
  • What you can learn from the fable of the tortoise and the hare
  • What does it mean by momentum requires momentum?

We all have trauma.

And this manifests in so many ways for everyone.

Some people are loud, some people go introverted. There are those who are depressed, while others are managed.

And sadly, sometimes the way we let our trauma or life circumstances mess with our heads can also mess with our growth.

This leads to self-sabotage that tramps upon the confidence you were supposedly born with.

My guest today is Rachel Luna. She is the founder and chief confidence creator at RachelLuna.biz. She's an in-demand speaker and author of the book Successful People are Full of Crap, and currently working on her next book, Girl, Confident.

Today, Rachel talks about healing from trauma, how understanding the life circumstances of other people can change the way you approach business, and how to embody the confidence within you.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • Why cancer is not a death sentence
  • How a good memory for one person can be a painful trigger for another person
  • 3 different ways people react to situations
  • Why you should buy VIP tickets at events and other stuff

I had a home life that said I should have ended up on the wrong side of the tracks.

I've struggled with suicidal ideation, depression, and anxiety.

In fact, having a podcast, owning my own business, raising four daughters, and being in a healthy Christ-centered relationship sometimes feel like nothing short of a miracle.

Today’s episode is all about your responsibility to share your absolute truth.

There’s actually an aspect of sharing our truth that encourages others to be who they are and to share their stories too.

The question is...

Are you willing to share your story so you can impact other people’s lives even if it means showing the most vulnerable side of you?

In this episode, you will hear:

  • My definition of absolute truth
  • The science behind neuro coupling and why sharing stories have impact and power
  • The 2 barriers in sharing our truth
  • How to share your truth and lead with your truth in business and life every day
  • Your responsibility to share your truth

Do you find yourself always keeping track of your Instagram likes and followers?

Or does it take you so much time editing or polishing before you put anything out on the internet?

How do you feel about being inundated with noise from promotions or bombarded by edited images and highlight reels?

All this could leave you feeling starved for real-life, legitimate, caring connections.

Today, I talk about how you can make your digital communication more authentic. I also discuss traditional modes you can re-implement in your business so you can satisfy your very real need for connection while still getting the job done.

With the spread of coronavirus, it gives this topic an entirely new meaning.

How can we find and experience real-life connections when we're restricted and now literally quarantined to our screens, working from home all day?

You can't take for granted your authentic relationships. This time teaches us to cherish our time with people in the flesh and to do our best to create more authentic connections online.

Traveling can be addictive, well, at least, it is for me.

But traveling can just be as stressful as running a business too.

Especially when you’re a control freak, traveling can quickly add up to decision fatigue, which most business owners suffer from.

One of the best examples of beating decision fatigue is Steve Jobs. He used to wear a black turtleneck every day so there was one less decision he had to make every morning, leaving that brainpower for being creative.

The same goes for traveling. Do away with the cause of stress from travel to make room for more rest and relaxation.

Today, I’m giving you four tips that will transform your travel experience so you can enjoy the process a little bit more!

In this episode, you will hear:

  • 2 reasons that can make travel so stressful
  • 4 ways to manage your travel better
  • What it means to have to pay extra when traveling
  • How your EA can help you with your travel plan and arrangements

I used to think that only I could speak for myself.

As a business owner, I didn't think that someone else could know me well enough to speak on my behalf.

So I found myself being stuck handling all the sales calls, all my speaking pitches, my event coordination, and even networking all by myself.

Eventually, I ran out of runway doing it all by myself.

It definitely limited my reach because I thought I personally had to be behind every single new relationship and touchpoint.

So I was left with only two choices – either hire an EA or continue to play small.

Today's episode is about having someone on your team who can speak on your behalf.

Your executive assistant serves as an extension of you.

This means you need to be able to train them to read your mind – well enough to make decisions for you in certain areas – so then you can focus more on growing your business.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The benefits of empowering your EA to speak on your behalf
  • The three major areas you can empower your EA with
  • The four steps in training your EA to read your mind
  • The dos and don’ts during the training process

Have you ever reached your breaking point as an entrepreneur?

Was there a moment when you felt like you just couldn't go any further?

There’s this unwritten rule that if you can't tough it out and weather hard storms, then maybe you're not cut out to run this race.

We tend to put enormous pressure on ourselves to perform well in all areas of our business that failure or taking some time off is just never an option.

But hitting the wall is the last thing you ever want to do.

Please.

Don’t even wait for that to happen – to reach your breaking point, and finally – break!

Today, I’m going to talk about having a team that calls the fight. You need a team behind you who has your back and who can help keep you from hitting your breaking point.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The analogy between boxers dying in the ring and entrepreneurs coming up against burnout

Do you tend to overbook yourself and manage your calendar poorly? Are you even factoring downtime?

Let's face it.

We are not our own best assistant. It's hard to stay committed to the things we said we're going to do.

This is why we need accountability.

We need someone to help us protect our time and our focus, to help hold all those details that stress us out, and to help us make sure we're showing up as our best.

Without an executive assistant, you end up being the assistant.

Today, I talk about how your EA can be the stabilizing force you need in your business. I'm going to share what it looks for EAs to create stability, some tips in finding the right person, and how you can lay the foundation for success so you can ultimately feel supported in the way you want.

With an EA as your stabilizing force, you can relax because you know they've got it covered.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How EAs can help us feel stable
  • What it looks like for our EA to provide stability
  • How to know you’ve hired the right person
  • Two points of caution before hiring an EA
  • How to lay a successful foundation for your EA
  • What not to do in an employer-EA relationship

What qualities do you look for when you're hiring an EA?

While many executives already know the tangible qualities they want in a support person, they often don’t think about the soft, intangible skills.

I’ve listed four qualities that make the difference between a good EA and an excellent EA.

These qualities determine how your EA shows up for you everyday. And they make a HUGE difference in how you as an executive are taken care of and how your team and clients are served.

EAs who serve us in this way will provide security and stability to our life as founders, but only so far as we create trust and relationship with them in return.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • How having a competent PA can set your business up for success
  • Why soft skills are very important to consider when hiring
  • The four intangible qualities I look for when hiring an EA
  • How confidence is different from cockiness
  • What it means to serve as a gateway instead of a gatekeeper
  • Why establishing trust is very critical in the founder-EA dynamics

How many of you are sticking with your New Year’s resolutions?

Studies show people tend to fizzle away from their goals fairly quickly (usually by January 12)!

After you listen to my interview with today’s guest, you will feel more motivated than ever to follow through on your goals.

Ben Burmaster, Founder & CEO of Snuggle Bugz, a baby store based in Burlington, Ontario, joins me to discuss his experience completing an Ironman 70.2.

Ben completed the race with just 12 weeks of training and no previous experience with swimming or competitive biking.

Ben shares what completing the Ironman taught him about personal goal setting and life as an entrepreneur.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The critical mistake people make when setting goals.
  • How Ben worked through self-doubt and doubt from others during his training — and how he applied this to life as an entrepreneur.
  • The importance of “going big” with your goals so that they “challenge the living daylights out of you.”
  • Ways to work through the emotional ups and downs of entrepreneurial life and why to “never, never, never” give up.

The better you know yourself, the better you know who you need working beside you.

“They were going to get some weird...interesting emails. Someone would have to be OK with that,” said Vanessa.

In this episode, you will hear:

  • The lightbulb moment that Vanessa knew she was connected with the right EA for her sex therapy business.
  • How Vanessa’s idea of leadership has changed over the years and how that has affected her communication with her EA.
