Those of us who struggle with clutter are interesting people who are interested in so many things! One of the most frustrating things about clutter and a home out of control is that it feels like it eats up so much time we’d rather spend doing other things.

Today I’m talking about how much time was freed up by doing my dishes every day. By decluttering. It doesn’t make sense at first glance so let’s go deeper than a glance.

I’m answering questions around the theme of dealing with gifts while you’re actively decluttering your home!

  • Do you have any tips for dealing with gifts? After every holiday, I end up with a pile of items in the garage that were given with love, but I have no use for or room for.
  • What do you do with very personalized gifts you don't want to keep? They're too nice to throw away but it feels weird to donate.
  • How do I declutter items my son made as gifts for me that I no longer like. My son still lives with me, they are displayed in the living area and I don't want to hurt his feelings but would love to re-decorate this space.
  • What do I do when “gifts” (receiving & giving) is the love language of everyone in my household?
  • I tried to do an alternative to gifts this year. Joke's on me, hubby still bought everyone gifts, kids still bought everyone gifts, apparently Mom is a Grinch trying to steal Christmas.
  • My mother in law knows how far we've come decluttering and simplifying and she knows I usually say no to most items she offers. What do I do with these highly sentimental gifts we never wanted?
  • I’m having a hard time getting rid of gifted Christmas ornaments — even when I know they haven’t made it on the tree in the past few years.

Function is so important in the kitchen because it is a space that needs to be used every day! Decluttering with function in mind will take you far. I’m answering these questions about decluttering in the kitchen:

  • I love to bake! I must have every size, shape, and type of cake pan and sheet pan ever made! But I "know" that the minute I donate them, I'll kick myself because someone will request something, and I'll either have to buy another pan or turn down the request. Thoughts?
  • What kinds of things do you or people you have worked with keep in the upper corner kitchen cabinets? They are awkwardly sized, and the back area is hard to reach.
  • Our most visible space is our kitchen. This is the main door we use and the door visitors use. It seems like such a big project. Any advice to help me focus on seeing progress on anything?
  • What do you think about storing new kitchen items until I build my "forever" home?
  • We currently have a temporary pantry sitting in the living room to house extra food, which is super ugly and weird. Do I keep my ugly pantry until I have eaten all this weird stuff?

  • What is the best way to downsize/go through Christmas stuff?
  • I am doing your "14 Days to Opening Your Front Door to Guests." It is lovely, and if I didn't have anything else to do, I am sure I could accomplish it. What do I do about all the random holiday activities that take up time I need for my room cleaning schedule?
  • How do I tell the difference between everyday holiday chaos and a sign my house isn’t nearly as “under control” as I thought it was?
  • How do I get the quantity of linens down when we often have guests who need a sheet set on a mattress or extra pillow cases, and it's hard to estimate what we will need? I’m tempted to keep more.
  • Please show me how to declutter my ornaments! I feel everything is sentimental. Help!

I’m answering your decluttering questions that were submitted at AskDanaKWhite.com

  • Due to some kitchen updates, I had to empty out my kitchen cabinets. Since I got everything out of the cabinets, I feel like it's a perfect time to declutter and reorganize!! How should I tackle this whole kitchen?
  • I've decluttered a ton. I'm pretty happy with how far I've gone, but I can't help feeling that I could go further, even though I have plenty of space for the things that I have. Any thoughts on this?
  • My family of 7 lives in a 2-story home. All of our bedrooms are located upstairs, and it’s a constant struggle to get the kids to take their laundry, toys, and personal items upstairs. Do you have any suggestions for making this process easier?
  • I don't know what to do with the greeting cards I get from my husband and children. I feel guilty about throwing them out, but realistically, they have no home! Please help!
  • My biggest struggle is with dishes. I wash them as I need them, like you said, you do clothes when they are all dirty. I am physically unable to stand or sit for the required hours it would take to complete them. Help!
  • I need more walking space in my apartment. I started decluttering the dining room and behind my living room chair. But, the items I am keeping are on the dining table, because I can't get into the spare room where I'd look for them first. Should I have started with the room I knew I would look in first for those things?
  • I have two questions. First, what do I do with "donations" when in my area, there is no place to donate to? I've searched countless times and asked many people. Second, how do you deal with people in your home shaming you for decluttering?
  • Your "take it there now" method allows me to do something without making the situation worse. It only gets better if that's the only task that gets done. Thank you.
  • How do you deal with toy clutter? My daughter is 3 years old, and the toys that deserve shelf space change every day. How do I (or we) choose what to keep?

I’m answering your decluttering questions that were submitted at AskDanaKWhite.com.

  • How can I plunk my homeschool routine in the middle of my dailies, progress with decluttering, and other housekeeping tasks without it all falling apart?
  • How do you prevent yourself from “going there” with your emotions? You said you have a lot of emotions about things. I get that!
  • When I’m going through my closet, I find items that I love. How do you part with items you love that you had put away for another time?
  • Can you please talk about getting rid of pieces of a set (like a set of dishes)?
  • How do I get to the next step when nothing really has a home?
  • What do I do with pages of notes and handouts that I have from various sources, such as meetings with health coaches, food webinars, gardening webinars, and decorating tips?
  • What are some ideas if your kids always wear through specific categories of clothes before the next laundry day?
  • Do I consider the five steps before I purchase an item that I don't necessarily need, such as clothing or home decor?
  • I helped a friend declutter, and it has returned. I love your concepts, but I am afraid I will not present your solutions to her successfully. Please help?
  • We just moved from a 2-bedroom apartment to a 4-bedroom house with a basement, garage, and attic. How do I "declutter" when I'm not hitting the walls of the container?
  • Is it possible to have a clutter threshold so low you can’t get below it? Any amount of clutter makes me feel like everything is out of control. This makes me feel overwhelmed, so the clutter continues to increase.

  • How do I deal with decluttering under my daughter's bed, where you can't as easily see what is there?
  • How do you work with family members who get mad when you ask where they'd look for something first? My husband and both kids (9 and 6) HATE this question.
  • How do I figure out how to get things out that are A) still good, B) useful in this current season, and C) not necessarily something I have too much of?
  • Any tips for when the issue is actually getting things out of the house? I live in Europe without a car and am limited to 30L of trash per week for my family of six.

Summer is here! (Or almost here!) Even if your personal schedule isn't dictated by a school calendar, life generally looks different in the summer as many activities take breaks or change their schedules. If you've found a cleaning or decluttering routine that works, or you feel like you're finally gaining some much-coveted traction, this can be scary. So let's talk about what to do and where to focus during out of routine times.

I’m answering your decluttering questions that were submitted at AskDanaKWhite.com

  • My whole house is pretty much under control now, except one thing: clothes. No matter what, they still get out of control all the time!
  • What do I do when I find things that don’t belong in our home?
  • To follow the container method and the progress -only method, how do we fill a tub or shelf with favorites till it’s full- without dumping everything on the floor first?
  • How do you know when you’ve gone too far? How do you know when it is time to re-clutter?
  • There are things I love to do in this space like take notes, make list, collect my thoughts, and imagine. Lately I have stopped writing almost completely because it is too much of an effort to go get what I need.
  • Many times, things get left on the counter for weeks on end. Is this likely a clutter threshold issue because the place where the items belong is too cluttered to put things away? Or is it a "not taking it there now" issue?
  • Decluttering advice for couples who are moving in together but have both previously lived in their own homes?

  • How do I handle items that don't fit into the desired container even if it were empty?
  • We are overflowing with kids books. What questions should I ask (and have my kids ask themselves) to decide which to keep and which to donate?
  • My in laws house is jam packed. We will have the burden of cleaning it out. They have trouble with step 1 trash. Do I keep trying to encourage the steps or simply accept this as my burden?
  • We need laundry tips: we cloth diaper a newborn and have to be doing laundry everyday, so laundry day isn’t an option right now.
  • How do you do Step 1 (Trash), when there is, for example, a deep box of stuff, or a precarious pile of stuff?

Today, I’m answering questions you’ve asked over at AskDanaKWhite.com. The general theme of these questions is, “Oh no! I was decluttering, and then something happened that made it harder!”

  • So what if an item has a home, but you can’t “get” to its home because you are borderline approaching hoarder status?
  • What do you do when you have an item that needs something done, e.g., an old laptop that needs stuff taken off before disposal or a photo album you want to chuck away, but you need to take all the photos out first?
  • I do most of my decluttering during baby’s nap time (she sleeps in our room) or after all the kids are in bed. How do I avoid keep piles when there are so many things I can’t “take it there now”?
  • How do I now downsize/remove containers from this point, even though everything has a home?
  • I remember I have (something), and I need it but can’t find it. Help?!?!?

I'm answering some questions that were submitted at AskDanaKWhite.com. The general theme is that it's hard to declutter when circumstances aren't ideal. Lucky for us, the No Mess Decluttering Method works in any situation.

  • We live in an older home with zero closets, not for clothes, nothing for linens. I am struggling so hard with “take it there now” when nothing seems to have a home that makes sense.
  • Do you have any suggestions for preparing for a time when I know I’ll have a lower clutter threshold, but I also know will be not-forever?
  • I've been stuck renovating, moving boxes from room to room, and living in a "war-zone". How do I declutter if I am stuck in the never-ending painting/sanding jobs with very little energy left?
  • How do I give myself the advantage of having a decluttered home from the start with all the chaos that comes with a move?

Those of us who struggle (big time) with clutter love to feel prepared for anything (and everything). The idea of decluttering can feel like giving up on that, and when worst-case scenarios actually happen, all those panicky feelings flare up and make it hard to let go of clutter.

The solution is not to pretend bad things can’t happen. It’s to accept reality. It’s reality that bad things happen. It’s also reality that keeping more stuff than my house can hold or that I can handle makes dealing with bad things (or even good things) more difficult.

I have removed emotions from my decluttering process, not because I don't have emotions, but because I do! I can't use emotions to declutter, so I stick with my fact and instinct based ways of dealing with things.

One of the biggest things that brings up lots of emotions is being asked (or asking myself) WHY?

Why didn't I take care of this before instead of letting it get so bad?

Why did I get this?

Why am I this way?

I'm talking about why I don't use "why" and why it helps to not use "why" in my decluttering process.

I'm answering a few questions that were asked over at AskDanaKWhite.com.

Question 1: My question is on the subject of toys. How do I go about starting (outside of your normal questions)? Like where do I start? My son is 3. Do I pick what to keep or does he? (We have tons of Hot Wheels, monster trucks, and small tractors.) How do I decide what to keep/donate? Is there a limit to how many of each?! HELP! Thank you!

Question 2: I am just starting my decluttering adventure. How do I create a home for items that I don't already have a place for?

Question 3: What do you do with items that you know you would have (Q2) but are not sure where you would look for that item? My "look for first" place changes. What if you haven't had a look for this item first space yet?

Part 2 of this question: What do you do for hope chest and heirloom items? I am saving for a home of my own. I have items that I would need for my future home. Right now I am living with a roommate and using her stuff (per her request as she owns the place that I am living). I have some of the same items i.e. dishes, furniture that I needed with different roommates and apartments in the past. When I have my own place will need these items again. How do I declutter items that I will still need when I'm wanting to declutter what I have and make it more manageable?

We all have (at least) one category of stuff that's extra hard to declutter. I'm addressing that today, inspired by this email:

I am a teacher who, due to life circumstances, is leaving the profession shortly before I could be considered early retired. I am working part-time as a substitute teacher because I can not seem to let go entirely. My question for you is: how do I let go of all the teaching resources I have accumulated and created over the last twenty-plus years? As a substitute teacher, I would realistically only need some of the materials, but not 80 boxes worth. How did you deal with the process of letting go of your professional materials?

I have been stuck with this issue for a long time. I have other clutter issues, but at the moment, the professional materials are one area I would like to conquer soon.

We (me especially, but also so many of my listeners) are great at theorizing. At predicting. At being super logical. We're intelligent people.

But when we theorize about house stuff like home maintenance and decluttering, putting our theories into practice isn't so fun, so we tend to keep theorizing some more. But if we don't move the theories into reality, the house never actually improves. Reality is the only place where things actually happen.

I've realized that a lot of the things I held onto "just in case" were things I envisioned saving the day. Won't I be glad I had that? Won't everyone ooh and aah if I end up already having the very thing we needed in that dire situation that could possibly happen one day? I've found this to be common in a lot of us who struggle with clutter. We like dramatic stories and we love to be the hero in those dramatic stories. But when we keep so much stuff that we can't actually find the thing when we finally need it, heroism turns into a hero complex.
