Her desire to understand her pain led her back to graduate school, where she earned her MSc in human movement and studied pain science as her research focus.
Now Jo explores what she has discovered through the lens of her personal story in hopes of starting meaningful conversations about pain, healing, and being human that lead to better possible paths forward for all of us: patients, carers, clinicians, and researchers alike.
It is only by coming together, sharing multiple perspectives and forms of knowledge and expertise, that we can improve the way pain is studied, understood, and treated.

Do you know someone who's struggled with drugs? Natural addiction hasn't changed over the centuries; however, the drugs have become more powerful. There's a cost, not just to the user, but to you, our medical system, and our societies.
In the United States seven people die every hour of a drug overdose; and in 2017, that was 72,000 people that died of an overdose crisis in the United States. In British Columbia, four die every day; and in Canada, 11 die every day to a drug overdose.
Guy Felicella joins us today to talk about these figures, what we're doing to bring them down with transitional housing and harm reduction programs, and what else we can do.
Guy is a worker with the Vancouver Coastal Health. He works with the homeless - people with poverty issues and with substance abuse in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver - and one big part of his job is working with people regarding harm reduction services in the heart of the opioid crisis that we are actually seeing here in BC and in particular Vancouver, but also in the communities around Vancouver.
Guy Felicella grew up in a middle-class home in Richmond but fell into addiction at a young age. Guy spent 30 years in the repeated cycle of gangs, addiction, treatment, and jail. He spent nearly 20 years residing in the two-block radius in the Downtown Eastside and using many resources, including harm reduction, to keep himself alive.
Today, Guy has escaped the grips of the turmoils that kept him suffering and resides in Surrey with his wife and two young children with multiple years of recovery and sobriety under his belt.
Guy is passionate about advocating for the vulnerable people who still suffer in addiction and educating communities on harm reduction to eliminate the stigma that exists around it. Guy has started a career with Vancouver Coastal Health in addition to attending various school districts to educate students on addiction.
Guy spent nearly his entire life suffering from the disease of addiction and now he is using his experience to change the hearts and minds of people stating, “you can’t save a dead addict.”

Mariana Arias Avila Vera received her Ph.D. in Physical Therapy from Federal University of São Carlos (Brazil) in 2014. She is currently Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Undergraduate and Graduate Program at Federal University of São Carlos, member of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) and Aquatic Physical Therapy International (APTI). My life circumstances have taken many twists, turns and detours. I really thought I would end up being an actor, a comedian and a poet 🙂 But, very often, Life asks more of me than I am initially willing to give. And it is often surprising. This path has been a blessing for me in so many ways and I still make time to write, create humour and art whenever possible.
I was fortunate from a young age to have a wide and deep life of experiences which eventually led me onto the mystical path and my calling to support others in their evolution and healing. No one gets to where they are without help. I have been incredibly blessed with the mentors and teachers who have appeared in my life and supported me through all of the challenges of evolving and learning to devote myself to service while also remaining devoted to my own self-care.
I reside on the beautiful Sunshine Coast (just a 40-minute ferry ride from Vancouver). The simple things give me great satisfaction: eating delicious & healthy food, spending time in nature and connecting with family & friends.
As a practitioner of Yoga & Tantra, my focus is on heart-centred living and evolving through my work and relationships. I enjoy a life of cultivating beauty and deepening service.
My work includes one-on-one sessions with private clients, leading various yoga programs and men's circles and in helping to oversee the operations of Arkaya Awareness Centre. I am also apprenticing with my teacher, Yogacharini Maitreyi, in learning to train new Yoga teachers.
I am certified as a coach using the Accelerated Evolution methods - a set of fast and effective consciousness enhancing tools distilled from the best of the world’s healing and wisdom traditions. I was closely mentored by the founder of Accelerated Evolution, Satyen Raja, for around two years and absorbed a rich capacity for bringing out people's deepest gifts to be used in service to others. Satyen was a big influence in my development and really helped me to mature as a man navigating a spiritual yet worldly life.
I am fully certified as teacher of Arkaya Yoga and as an Arkaya Multidimensional Healer by my teacher, Yogacharini Matireyi - founder of Arkaya. She has given me permission to work as a healer, coach and Yoga facilitator. Arkaya is rooted in the classical Indian system of Yoga & Tantra. It is the art and science of healing, evolution and self-realization.
As the Community Builder & Communications Director for Arkaya Awareness Centre, I find great joy in helping to create conscious, uplifting community where people can reach their full potential & self-expression in a healthy environment. I continue to work with Maitreyi almost everyday in the overseeing of the Arkaya community and all of its' various programs. I give her much credit for where I am today. My book, The Truth About Chronic Pain Treatments: The Best and Worst Strategies for Becoming Pain Free, grew out of my own experience with chronic pain as well as my work as a health care provider working with pain patients.
I became highly motivated to learn about effective chronic pain treatments after I developed severe, disabling back pain when I was 25 years old. The doctors I consulted with were unable to find the cause of my pain, and they prescribed drugs which didn’t help and were potentially dangerous.
After enduring agonizing pain for more than three years, a friend suggested that I read a book about the mind/body connection, which, among other ideas talked about healing through “laughter therapy” and biofeedback. I changed my TV viewing habits–I was watching the holocaust miniseries at the time. Then I consulted a biofeedback therapist who taught me that worrying about pain only made it worse, and that I could use my mind to reduce my pain by learning to relax. After the initial session, I was astonished to find that my pain was already reduced by 50% because I knew that I could have some control over my pain instead of fearing it.
These experiences encouraged me to explore other non-pharmacological approaches to healing pain. My health improved enough that I was able to return to work full-time and also complete my Master’s Degree in Social Work.
Another later experience with chronic foot pain that lasted for 14 years and did not respond to mind/body treatments taught me that pain can have many different causes and that you need to determine the cause in order to find the right treatment.
Along the way, I shared my successes with everyone I knew. I realized my passion was to help people heal. I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and nationally certified biofeedback practitioner. For the last 25 years I have helped my clients improve their emotional and physical well-being through my private practice near Albany, NY. You can learn more about my clinical work at www.peakmindbody.com.
I wrote The Truth About Chronic Pain Treatments: The Best and Worst Strategies for Becoming Pain Free to educate health care providers and patients about how to end the epidemic of chronic pain that is ruining the lives of 100 million Americans and more than a billion people around the world. This book documents how conventional treatments are often the most dangerous and least effective, and how alternative treatments can be used to get to the root of the problem and promote real healing.
Recently, I launched The Alternative Pain Treatment Directory as an additional resource for those struggling with chronic pain. With this website, patients have access to practitioners, products, and information to assist them in managing their pain. Alternative healthcare practitioners can list their services on the directory. Visit the site at paintreatmentdirectory.com to learn more or to list your practice today.
