(Psalm 51)Please note the message started with the following clip; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTqeNmbKkw0 This Sunday Gavin takes the opportunity to unpack a Spiritual Discipline that is often misunderstood - Confession. (Genesis 13:1-18; Matthew 6:19-24; Philippians 4:10-13)Today Gordon continues our Spiritual Discipline series with another discipline - simplicity. Join us as this confronting parable is unpacked and we are urged to examine our own attitudes towards God.
(Mark 3:1-6)As we continue working our way through the Gospel of Mark we come to another occasion in which Jesus and some of the religious leaders of the time clashed over the Sabbath. (John 5:16-19, John 15:1-8) Gavin invites us to reconsider the role that rest and abiding plays in the expression of our faith each day, asking the question "Are you working from a place of healthy rest or are you being forced to rest from a place of unhealthy work?"Jesus lived and taught the true purpose of Sabbath - a command that was given for our good. Only by abiding in him first, will we produce fruit for God's glory.
(Mark 2:1-12)Today as Megan picks up our Gospel of Mark series again, we encounter a story about the healing of a paralytic man. (Exodus 19:1-6, 20:1-21)As the Israelites complete their forty day journey and camp of at the base of Mt Sinai, God offers these former slaves the most profound invitation - to enter into a special covenant with Him and become a royal priesthood. So often we can picture the Ten Commandments as a frustrating set of rules that ultimately restrict our freedom. But these dehumanised and demoralised people will discover, like we do, that to be human, to be released from slavery, is not to do whatever we want, but to live as God created us to live: God's rules are for our release.
(1 Samuel 4:1-11)NOTE: We apologise that the beginning of this message was lost due to audio issues. The people of Israel sought to employ the ark of the covenant, representing the presence of God, as a tool for military victory against the Philistines. But God's presence would never be limited to such a box, nor would he be willing to be employed as a tool without respect to his rule and character. We too need to be challenged not to use or abuse the presence of God when it comes to our own theological convictions or practice, ensuring the essentials stay at the core. God is not a tool to wield for our own agenda.
(Exodus 17:1-7)As we near the end of our series following the people of Israel on their exodus from Egypt, we reach the third and final test God had for them. (Exodus 16:1-21, 35)As the People of Israel move on from Elim they encounter their next test. As Gavin unpacks, this is still a challenge for us today that we need to continue trusting in God to provide what we need.

(Luke 15:11-32)Tonight we are continuing our Complex Parables series with the 3 parable in a set - The parable of the lost sons. In this message Mike unpacks the unfair forgiveness that is demonstrated by God to us, and the cause for celebration that is.

(Banner Series #16) These days, it's not politically correct to talk about judgement - but it's a risky thing to misrepresent the character of God....
One day, judgement is coming. Until then, however, we are all free to make our own choices.
God, however, as the personification of holiness, righteousness and justice, cannot uphold the compromises we often (so easily) permit ourselves. Ultimately, the life we live --or the building-stones we lay- upon the cornerstone of Christ- will be weighed and judged.
We thank you still, God, that you are fair, loving and righteous.

Small things can make big trouble; the Dalai Lama once said, “If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito.” Likewise, our tongue is a small organ which can bring others to the ground if not used considerately...

Tim Donovan is a valued member of ASBC, so some of you will know him in this setting. However, you may not be aware that Tim is also a registered mental health social worker and experienced practitioner with graduate qualifications in social work and narrative therapy. Tim is committed to person-centred practice in supporting individuals, families and groups who have experienced acts of oppression.
Tonight we also welcome via Zoom, Dale Johns. Dale is a survivor of childhood sexual violence who has devoted his life to Pastoral Care and Advocacy, working with the lonely, homeless and drug affected. Dale hopes his story brings freedom to other survivors through gaining a deeper understanding of shame, and teaching mental health professionals showing care and compassion is a vital component of effective counselling.
By means of setting the scene, this interview tonight coincides with the launch of a book: Reclaiming lives from sexual violence: Understanding shame through innovative narrative therapy. This book presents an illustrative case study of the authors, Tim the therapist in consultation with Dale the client, who was sexually abused as a child by a clergy member. Tim worked with Dale in a therapeutic capacity for about three and a half years and over that time profound lessons emerged that speak to the process of healing, the importance of faith, and discovering a higher purpose that emerges from horrific circumstances.

Jesus dropped truth-bombs unapologetically.
He wanted disciples who would wrestle confusion to find truth, and didn't apologise to the followers for his hard words. Some people will give up, abandoning Christianity or the words of the Bible. Yet, as Peter asked... to whom else shall we go?
