The Musical Spotlight is written and presented by Jerry Short, produced and edited by Daniel Botei. We will shine our musical spotlight on an artist from the world of soul, funk, reggae and jazz. As you can picture, it’s a huge spotlight like the ones on the 20th Century Fox logo, so bright enough to pick out all the juicy details about incredible artists from "Al Green to Ziggy Marley", and play clips from their best tracks.
This #MusicalSpotlight we are shinning on to "Amy Winehouse", who was everything you’d expect "a superstar singer, incredibly talented, with a rock’n’roll lifestyle and a sensational voice"

Desmond Dekker was one of the 1st truly international Jamaican stars. His falsetto voice and singing in patois were thought to be a commercial risk by his record company, yet Israelites reached no1 in the UK and no9 in the USA. He passed away in 2006 but his recordings are more loved now, than they have ever been

In this episode Jerry's shinning the #MusicalSpotlight onto an American R&B and pop music group who were founded in Philadelphia in 1971. Their names are Kim, Kathy, Joni and Debbie. The original identity of the group was "Mrs. Williams Grandchildren", though it was later changed to the current name. They were especially popular in late 1970s and early 1980s with their hits: We are Family, Frankie, He's the Greatest Dancer and many other.

In this episode Jerry's shinning the #MusicalSpotlight onto a male singer who is a musician, a poet and a novelist.... who once on tour came back to his hotel room and noticed someone had been in there smoking his grass. He said “It felt like a cheap version of ‘The Three Bears’”. It turned out one of the brothers smoking in there, was none other than Bob Marley!!!!

In fact her earliest childhood memory was sitting as a young girl with Miles Davis at a gig in Paris; and she lived in Long Island City in a block full of artists including members of Talking Heads; and she appeared on “Top of the Pops” in 1988 — with her very pregnant belly sheathed in a skin-tight Lycra skirt.
