In this Startup Sessions Podcast, I am joined by Gauthier Van Maldaren, Founder & CEO of Perlego. Perlego is a subscription service company for textbooks. I find both the founder's and the company's story interesting in many levels. Here is a brief overview of some questions and discussion topics.
-Personal story of Gauthier leading up to the decision to become an entrepreneur and founder.
-Role of "execution": Perlego was not the first business to come up with the idea of "Spotify for Textbooks" but it was the successful one. Why?
-Importance of getting the product to market before it is beautiful.
-Being mission driven rather than profit driven: "Build world's online learning library."
-Role of timing: How do you know it's not too early, too late, but just right? Look at those suffering in your market. In Perlego's case: Publishers were seeing their revenues decline, students resorted to piracy. Importance of creating a new revenue stream for publishers.
-How does piracy push commercial progress in markets?
-How big of a competitive advantage do reputable schools provide? What is the biggest one of those and do they act as barriers to entry for others?
I would like to extend my thanks to Gauthier and the team at Perlego for taking the time. Visit perlego.com to find out more.
If you would like to be guest in the Startup Sessions either with your personal expertise or the story of your startup, reach out to me via ozan@commonwisdom.co.uk
This is the story of FatFish Digital, a tech company that started building apps before the “app boom” talked about AI before it was the hype and built over 100 products over the last 10 years.
Brighton based Fat Fish Digital started by building games. Soon into the podcast we realised certain types of businesses, founders and interests attract different types of talent to the company. In the case of Fat Fish, that turned out to be a strength since they are a group of people with shared passions and a robust company culture that has grown and matured organically.
We have also talked about:
-How the business evoled in terms of their techstack over the years.
-How they managed growth in terms of people and the working culture within the company.
-That company culture becomes really critical when people you have hired start making other hiring decisions.
-Who should doing the onboarding and orientation of the new employees. The most senior, or the most junior people at the company?
-What the main customer acquisition channels they use are.
-The role of NoCode - ZeroCode type platforms / products and their role to play in the future.
-That the shelflife of skills are getting shorter and that now having a successful career has become less about just being a hard worker, but more about picking the right direction.
In this Startup Sessions podcast I am joined by the founder of Feast-it Digby Vollrath and Head of Marketing Curran Dye to talk about how they nailed the growth culture and scaled their startup.
Especially the segment on scaling, evolving the tech-stack as well as the culture and people is full of insights.
Feast-it (www.feast-it.com) lets you discover, compare and easily book high quality street food caterers for your event. Below are some headlines and questions from the discussion.
-How they found product-market fit by listening on and observing the businesses around them.
-How they evolved their tech-stack and people strategy as the business matures into a scaleup.
-Combining doing things that scale with the flexibility people have & automation through tech.
-What software & productivity tools they use
-How they built a robust culture that is built on;
-Leaving ego at the door.
-Challenging others & openness to being challenged.
-Making sure everyone buys into the vision.
-Using the right rituals from weekly recurring drinks to co-workers regularly cooking dinner for each other.
-What talent recruitment strategies they use.
-Their words of wisdom on how to build a real network of people that will help you in London.
I would like to extend my thanks to them for joining in to tell their impressive story (although they make it look easy).
