As Greta Thunberg makes her way across the Atlantic in a zero-emissions sailboat, these lyrics from the Denver band MEET THE GIANT featured in this week’s edition of Vagrom Eclectic really stood out for me. Both tracks from the band’s self-titled EP:
“How long are you giving me to figure this out? The clocks are running, until all the lies are told.” Runaway
“Does it wear you down, the choice that you have made? When the seeds are sown, the path is laid.” Sentry
As the reality of climate change sinks in, I feel like more and more artists are starting to ask questions. Like, how long are you giving me to figure this out?
MEET THE GIANT will be playing at an old Colfax standard, Lost Lake, on Saturday, August 31st. They share the bill with The Astronauts, The Center and Bad Britton. Be sure to tell them Vagrom sent ya.
MEET THE GIANT formed in 2009 as a writing and recording outlet for scene veterans Erin Cisney, Micaela Haluko, and Lawrence Snell (hailing from such acts as Colder Than Fargo, Fallout Orphan, and The Legendary Beep Beeps). Their self-titled debut was released in May 2018.

This week's installment features two tracks from the Denver band The Spirettes ahead of their August 23rd show at the Hi-Dive. It’s an album release party for the Big Dopes, and Whiskey Autumn is also on the bill. Be sure to tell them Vagrom sent ya.
The Spirettes' ethereal guitar-driven rock is supported by pop structures and sprinkled with myriad ghostly female vocals. The band produced a lo-fi recording of their original set in April 2017, dubbed “The Horse Barn Recordings”, named for its setting in a reconstructed horse barn built in the early 1900’s. From this stark, haunted initial sound, the band landed a spot in Denver’s Underground Music Showcase, then began booking throughout Colorado.
Denver artists Roka Hueka get the spotlight at a free concert at Commons Park on Thursday September 12th at 6pm. The band is fearless, taking on issues including immigration and racism.
Here’s this week’s indytrack playlist:
The Spirettes - Long Day
Roka Hueka - Black & Ayotzinapa
Poly Action - Staying Awake
Kadhja Bonet - Fair Weather Friend
Spirettes - Basss Hotel
Rascinating Earthbound Objects - Overcast
Funk Fiction - Sunset Heights

This week, your host Erin Gleeks features two tracks from Jen Korte and the Loss as fans gear up for her August 15 show at Ophelia’s Electric Soapbox with opening act Whippoorwill. Korte is a veteran of Denver's music scene, and in 2018, she was named best folk band by Westword readers.
Korte is also known for her broad range. Appearances as Lady Gang, a solo hip-hop project where Korte plays all the instruments, have wowed audiences.
Check out the show at Ophelia’s, a converted brothel and peep show, be sure to tell them Vagrom sent ya.
Gleeks also features the group 3HatTrio, out of Utah, which will perform for free on August 16th as a part of the Clyfford Still Museum’s outdoor lawn series; and a throwback from Nathaniel Rateliff’s early incarnation in Denver The Wheel.

Inspired by a 16-year-old Swedish activist, students in Colorado are going on strike from school to protest what they see as the failure of world leaders to address climate change. From Public News Service https://bit.ly/2GAUfoz
A PSA in Spanish and English is playing now on DOM 92.9 FM in Denver. Listen to it here, and pass along some key constitutional protections.
Occasionally Vagrom rips off corporate record label songs, for various reasons. Today, it's Blanco Brown's controversial "The Git Up." Dr. Robert Muñoz, Jr., Vagrom's guest social justice and cultural contributor, breaks down the ear-worm worthy mash-up fusing country line dancing and hip-hop. This BMG title comes via fair use here, thanks to said commentary.
Denver city council is expected to consider a measure to make it easier for people to add Tiny Houses to industrial spaces and other areas around the city without going through a lot of bureaucratic red tape. The measure, sponsored by Robin Kniech, is expected to be heard by council in the fall. If approved, most agree that even the most ambitious Tiny Home plans wouldn’t put much of a dent in housing demand.
